IB Mock Exam Preparation in Dubai

IB mock exam preparation in Dubai is a six-week job, not a weekend one. Dubai schools sit Diploma mocks between late November and early February, mark them against real IB criteria, and turn the results into the predicted grades that go to universities. We work one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, from the paper your child has already sat rather than from a generic revision plan.

  • Sessions start from your child's own marked mock script
  • Scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around Dubai school hours
  • One-to-one over live video, never a recorded course
  • Free trial lesson before any commitment is made

What a Dubai IB mock actually measures

A mock exam is the only moment before May when a Diploma student sits a full paper under timed conditions and has it marked by someone applying IB criteria. Dubai schools treat that information seriously. Most run Diploma mocks in a window that opens in late November and closes in early February, usually with DP2 cohorts sitting two or three papers per subject across a fortnight. The marks feed directly into the predicted grades a coordinator submits, and those predictions are what a university admissions office reads months before any real result exists.

That makes the mock a high-stakes administrative event and a low-stakes learning event at the same time. The grade itself changes nothing on the final transcript. The pattern inside the paper changes everything about what the next five months should contain. A student who scored 4 in Biology HL may have lost almost all of those marks on command terms, not content: answering 'explain' questions as if they said 'describe', or writing three correct sentences where the mark scheme wanted a causal chain. Another student in the same class with the same 4 may know the content badly in two topics and well everywhere else. Those two students need entirely different work, and a summary grade cannot tell them apart.

IB mock exam preparation in Dubai therefore starts with the script, not the syllabus. We ask for the marked paper, the mark scheme the school used, and the subject report if the teacher wrote one. From there a tutor builds a map of where the marks actually went: by paper, by question type, by topic, by command term. That map is usually surprising. Students who describe themselves as weak at Mathematics often turn out to be losing most of their marks to method-mark presentation and calculator use rather than to the mathematics itself.

Dubai adds its own timing pressures. The mock window overlaps with the internal deadlines for Internal Assessments in most subjects, with the Extended Essay final submission in many schools, and often with family travel over the winter break. A revision plan written as if the student had free evenings for eight weeks will be abandoned by week two. Ours is written against the actual school calendar: which weeks are already full, when the IA draft is due, where a 90-minute session fits between a 3:30pm finish and dinner.

The second thing Dubai adds is distance from the usual tutoring pool. A family in Dubai Hills looking for a Chemistry HL specialist who can mark Paper 3 to criteria has a far smaller local market than a family in London. Because every session here runs over live video, the constraint disappears: the match is made on subject and level, not on who can reach your community by 5pm. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India, and the online format is what makes a genuine subject specialist reachable from any Dubai community.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mock exams exist at all three IB stages, but they mean different things at each. Below is what a mock measures in each programme and how that changes the work in a Dubai context.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma mock is the serious one. DP2 students sit full-length papers under exam conditions, marked against published criteria, across six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge. Results drive the predicted grades submitted to universities and often decide whether a school recommends a level change from HL to SL while that is still administratively possible.

Dubai DP cohorts are concentrated in a relatively small set of schools, which means subject sizes can be tiny: a Physics HL class of nine is common. A student who is third from bottom in that class may still be sitting at a grade 5 globally, and the reverse happens too. Comparing a mock mark against published criteria rather than against eight classmates is the single most useful correction a tutor makes at this stage.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP assessment is criterion-referenced rather than paper-based, so an MYP mock is usually a criterion-aligned task rather than a past paper. Students are marked A to D on strands specific to each subject group, and the levels do not convert to IB grades in any simple way, which is the source of most parental confusion at this stage.

Several Dubai schools run MYP to Year 11 and then move students into the Diploma, skipping IGCSE altogether. For those families the Year 11 mock is the first timed-paper experience the student has ever had, and the gap is usually exam stamina and written structure rather than subject knowledge. Work in Dubai MYP5 mocks tends to focus hardest on the shift from criterion tasks to a clock.

PYPAges 3-11 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

There are no mocks in the PYP. Assessment is continuous, portfolio-based, and reported against transdisciplinary learning rather than subject marks. Where families seek support at this stage it is usually for the transition into MYP, for English as an additional language, or for the mandatory UAE subjects running alongside the PYP.

PYP parents in Dubai often meet the word 'mock' for the first time when an older sibling reaches DP2 and the house changes shape for six weeks. Understanding early that the Diploma mock is a diagnostic rather than a sentence makes the later years calmer, and it is worth knowing which secondary school a Dubai primary feeds before Year 6 ends.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP combines DP courses with a career-related study and four core components. Students sitting DP subjects within a CP frame sit the same mock papers as DP candidates for those subjects, but carry a different overall workload and a reflective project instead of the full six-subject spread.

The CP is offered by only a handful of UAE schools, so CP students in Dubai frequently find that generic IB revision material does not match their timetable. Mock preparation for a CP candidate is narrower and more intense: usually two or three DP subjects at once, with the career-related study deadlines sitting awkwardly across the same weeks.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mock marks leak in subject-specific ways. The list below names the component where Dubai students most often lose marks in a mock and what a session does about it.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Mock losses here are rarely conceptual. They cluster in method presentation, premature rounding, and the non-calculator paper, where students who can solve a problem on a graphic display calculator cannot show the algebra. Sessions rebuild working-out habits against mark schemes so method marks survive a wrong final answer.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The AI mock punishes weak modelling language and statistical interpretation rather than algebra. Students write the right test and then fail to state a conclusion in context. Work focuses on the sentence after the calculation, which is where a surprising share of the marks sits.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Paper 2 extended response is the usual casualty: energetics and equilibrium answers that state a correct fact without the mechanism the mark scheme wants. HL mocks also expose gaps in organic reaction pathways. Sessions work through marked responses line by line against criteria rather than re-teaching whole topics.

Biology

HL and SL

Command terms do the damage. 'Outline', 'explain', 'distinguish' and 'suggest' each want a different shape of answer, and Dubai mock scripts regularly show full content knowledge scoring half marks because the shape was wrong. Data-based questions on Paper 2 are the second recurring weak point.

Physics

HL and SL

Mock papers expose unit and significant-figure discipline, and the habit of starting a mechanics question with the wrong equation from the data booklet. HL candidates lose most in fields and induction. Sessions drill the booklet itself: which relationship applies, and how to show the substitution.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides the mark. An unlabelled axis or a shifted curve without an explanation turns a good argument into a mid-band answer. Evaluation in Paper 1 part (b) is the other gap: students describe both sides without reaching a judgement supported by the diagram.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis is where mock marks go missing, usually because the student summarises the text rather than analysing how its features create meaning. Sessions practise unseen extracts under time, then compare the response against the published assessment criteria strand by strand.

Business Management

HL and SL

The case-study paper rewards tool application, not tool recall. Mock scripts routinely include a correct Ansoff matrix with no link back to the stimulus firm. Work focuses on using the case material as evidence and on the HL extension topics that appear late in DP2.

Psychology

HL and SL

Mock answers lose marks on study detail: aim, method, findings and conclusion, with the link back to the question made explicit. Students often know ten studies loosely and none precisely. Sessions build a smaller, firmer bank of studies that can carry multiple question types.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Where a school mocks TOK it is normally an essay against a prescribed title. Marks go on claims without counterclaims, and on examples drawn from nowhere in particular. Support is feedback on the student's own reasoning and structure, never drafting on their behalf.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mock preparation is bought in three shapes, depending on how much time is left and how wide the problem is. All three run one-to-one over live video.

Script review block

Two to four sessions on a single marked mock paper. The tutor works through the script against the mark scheme, identifies where the marks went, and hands back a written list of the specific habits costing marks. Suited to a student whose grade was acceptable but whose teacher flagged a pattern.

  • Marked script and mark scheme sent before the first session
  • Written diagnostic returned after the block
  • Usually one subject, one paper
  • Fits inside a fortnight

Six-week mock-to-May programme

Weekly sessions in one or two subjects running from the mock result through to the final weeks before the May session. The plan is built against the student's own school deadlines, including IA submissions, and is revised at the halfway point using the next piece of marked work rather than a feeling.

  • Weekly 60 or 90-minute sessions in Gulf Standard Time
  • Plan written against the school's own calendar
  • Timed questions set between sessions and marked
  • Progress reviewed against criteria at week three

Pre-mock intensive

A short, dense block in the two or three weeks before a mock sitting, for students who want the mock itself to go well because they know predicted grades follow from it. Content is narrowed to the topics on the mock's stated scope, with timed practice under the real paper length.

  • Narrowed to the school's published mock scope
  • Full-length timed papers with marked feedback
  • Three to five sessions across two or three weeks
  • Often booked for two subjects at once

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The Dubai IB mock calendar, counted backwards

  • Confirm the mock window with the school, not with other parents
  • Overlay IA and Extended Essay deadlines before writing a revision plan
  • Treat the mock result as the trigger for any HL to SL conversation
  • Expect the January weeks after mocks to be the densest of the year

Mock preparation is a scheduling problem before it is a teaching problem. The Diploma runs two sessions a year, May and November, and almost every Dubai school sits the May session. Working backwards from May, the mock sits roughly four to five months out, which is close to the last point at which a structural change, such as moving a subject from HL to SL, is still realistic.

The table below is a planning skeleton, not a set of official dates. IB session and results dates are published by the IB and should be confirmed with your school's Diploma coordinator rather than taken from any tutoring site, including this one. What does not move year to year is the order of events and the gaps between them, and that order is what makes a revision plan either feasible or fictional.

Read the right-hand column as the actual instruction. If your child is in the mock window and has not yet handed in a Mathematics IA draft, the revision plan for January is already wrong, because the IA will take the hours the plan assumed. Families who map these two calendars against each other in November almost always find two weeks they did not know were already full, and finding them in November is far cheaper than finding them in March.

One more piece of sequencing is worth noting in advance. The window in which a level change from HL to SL can still be processed closes earlier than most families expect, and it is tied to the school's own administrative deadlines rather than to the exam itself. If the mock has raised that question, raise it with the coordinator in the same week the script comes back, not after the next report cycle. Waiting costs the option rather than the grade, and the option is sometimes the better outcome for a student carrying three HLs that no longer fit.

Reading a mock script instead of a mock grade

A mock grade compresses a great deal of information into one digit, and most of what a tutor needs is in the part that got compressed away. The first thing we do with a returned script is rebuild the mark distribution: how many marks were available per question, how many were earned, and what kind of question each one was. Patterns appear quickly once the marks are laid out that way.

Four patterns account for most Dubai mock underperformance. The first is command-term mismatch, where the content is known and the answer shape is wrong. The second is timing collapse, visible as strong early answers and blank or one-line later ones, which is a pacing problem rather than a knowledge problem and is fixed by practice under a clock. The third is topic-local ignorance, where one or two syllabus areas are genuinely unlearned while everything else is sound. The fourth is presentation loss, especially in Mathematics and Physics, where correct thinking earns no method marks because it was never written down.

Each of those four needs a different intervention, and that is precisely why a general revision course struggles with mock follow-up. A student with timing collapse gains nothing from more content teaching, and a student with two unlearned topics gains nothing from more timed papers. Separating them takes one careful session with the script in front of both tutor and student, which is also the session in which most students stop believing the grade means they are bad at the subject.

The script is also the honest record of what the student can do unaided. Homework and coursework are produced with notes, time and help. A mock answer is not. For a parent deciding whether to spend on tutoring at all, a marked mock is better evidence than any report comment, because it shows the gap between supported performance and unsupported performance in a single document.

03

What mock preparation costs in Dubai, and what moves the number

Prices in this market are easy to find and hard to compare, because providers quote different things: an hour, a 90-minute session, a monthly package, or a block. The figures below are published market rates from the Dubai tutoring market as read in October 2026, not IB Gram's own price list. We publish them because three of the six highest-ranking pages for Dubai IB tutoring queries show no price at all, and two of the remaining three quote in US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family pays in.

Mock season is also the point in the year when rates move most. Demand for Diploma specialists concentrates into the same eight weeks across the whole emirate, which is why a family starting a search in mid-January finds both less availability and firmer pricing than one starting in October. The same effect is visible again in March and April before the May session.

Three things move a quoted number more than anything else. Level is the first: HL work in a science or Mathematics commands more than SL across every provider band. Format is the second, and the travel premium on an in-home visit is substantial, as the table shows. Specificity is the third and least obvious: a tutor who can mark Chemistry Paper 3 to criteria sits in a narrower market than one who can teach general secondary science, and narrowness is what parents are actually paying for during mock follow-up.

For IB Gram's own position: we publish no fixed rate card on these pages, because the right figure depends on subject, level and how many weeks remain. The free trial lesson exists so a family can judge the match before any money is discussed, and the rate for the specific subject and level is confirmed in that conversation.

04

Online mock coaching against an in-home tutor in Dubai

The honest comparison matters here because mock preparation is unusually sensitive to tutor specificity. A generalist can help a student revise. Only a subject specialist can tell a parent that the four marks lost on question 7(b) went because the answer gave a correlation where the mark scheme wanted a mechanism. The question is therefore not whether in-home tuition works, but what a Dubai family gives up in exchange for the convenience.

In-home tutoring in Dubai is a real and substantial market. Published rates run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, with monthly in-home packages quoted around AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visits. Part of that premium is teaching and part is travel: a tutor crossing from Mirdif to Arabian Ranches at 5pm on a weekday is spending an hour in a car that the family is paying for in one form or another. The deeper constraint is the catchment. A family is choosing from the specialists willing to drive to them, which in a niche like Physics HL Paper 3 may be nobody at all.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Every UAE session runs one-to-one over live video, which is also what the other forty-eight country pages on this site state. That is not a compromise dressed up as a feature: it is what allows a Dubai Hills family to work with a Chemistry HL specialist who marks to criteria instead of with whoever covers their community. Screen sharing suits mock review particularly well, because tutor and student look at the same scanned script and the same mark scheme at the same time, and the annotated version is saved rather than left on a kitchen table.

Where in-home genuinely wins is with younger children who need physical presence to stay on task, and with households where screen time is already contested. For a DP2 student six weeks out from predicted grades, the trade runs the other way, and the table below sets out why.

Mocks, predicted grades and what universities actually see

Predicted grades are the practical reason mock season carries weight. A Diploma candidate applying to universities does so before any real IB result exists, so the application carries a predicted grade for each subject, submitted by the school. Mocks are the most substantial piece of evidence a coordinator has when deciding what to predict, which is why a bad mock can echo for a year.

What a parent can usefully do is narrow. The prediction belongs to the school and is made on the school's professional judgement; no tutoring provider influences it and any that implies otherwise should be treated with suspicion. What a student can influence is the evidence available at the moment the prediction is made. A piece of strong, recent, criteria-marked work handed in two weeks after a weak mock is genuinely relevant information, and several Dubai schools will look at it.

The sequencing therefore matters more than the intensity. Support that arrives three days after a mock result and produces a marked improvement on the next assessed piece is worth more, at this specific moment, than the same number of hours spread thinly across February and March. After predictions are submitted the calculus flips entirely: from that point the only thing that matters is the May paper itself, and the work should widen from targeted repair to full past-paper rotation.

One further Dubai-specific point. Students applying to UAE institutions, or seeking Ministry of Education equivalency for a degree here, face a separate documentary process from the admissions process itself. That is administrative rather than academic, it is handled by the Ministry and the relevant authority, and no tutoring service performs or guarantees it. Ask the school's university counsellor early, because the paperwork timeline is long and independent of exam results.

06

Academic honesty during mock and IA season

  • A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own draft
  • No assessed work is written, rewritten or edited to completion by a tutor
  • Bought coursework risks a malpractice finding against the whole Diploma
  • Official papers are linked at source, never redistributed

Mock season in Dubai overlaps with Internal Assessment deadlines in most subjects, which puts families in front of a choice that some providers in this market answer badly. The IB's academic-honesty rules are unambiguous: assessed work must be the student's own. A tutor may teach the underlying skill, explain the criteria, ask questions about reasoning, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, rewrite, or edit the work into shape.

This matters commercially because at least one provider ranking for UAE IB queries sells finished Internal Assessments outright, at prices around AED 3,750. Buying one exposes the student to a malpractice finding, which can mean the loss of the entire Diploma, not just the subject. No grade is worth that, and no price makes the risk sensible. We state the boundary on every page in this set because the boundary is itself a reason to choose differently.

In practice the line is easy to hold once it is named. A productive IA session sounds like questions: what is your research question actually asking, why did you choose that method, what does this graph show that your conclusion does not mention. An unproductive one sounds like dictation. Parents can audit this themselves by asking the student to explain their own IA argument without notes a week after the session. If they cannot, the work was not theirs.

The same rule applies to past papers and mark schemes. We reference official IB, Cambridge and Pearson material and link to the publishers rather than redistributing documents, because reproducing syllabus documents, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables is a copyright matter and, for unreleased material, an exam-security one. Your school's subject teacher is the correct route to the school's own mock papers.

07

KHDA, the Dubai school calendar and Ramadan scheduling

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak, and the published report for your child's school is public. It is worth reading the subject-level commentary rather than only the headline band, because inspection reports often name specific departments and that is directly relevant to where a mock result came from.

KHDA also sets requirements that shape the week around mock preparation. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and schools permitted to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met. For a DP2 student in mock season those lessons are fixed timetable, so revision hours have to come from elsewhere. Families consistently underestimate this when planning.

The academic calendar adds two further constraints. The winter break falls inside or immediately beside the mock window at most schools, which means either a fortnight of lost momentum or a fortnight of concentrated work, depending on the plan made in November. Ramadan brings shortened school days and a shifted household rhythm; sessions commonly move to a post-Iftar slot, and students often prefer it, because evening focus during Ramadan is frequently better than late-afternoon focus.

On regulation of tutors themselves: private tuition in the UAE is permit-based. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anybody. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or Ministry endorsement and claims none.

08

Getting started after a mock result, honestly

The useful first message is short and specific: the subject, the level, the mock grade, the target, and how many weeks remain. With that we can say whether a specialist in that exact combination is available, and if not, we say so rather than offering an approximate match. Diploma HL sciences and Mathematics AA HL are the two areas where availability tightens most during Dubai mock season, because every school's mock window overlaps.

The marked script is the second thing to send, and it changes the first session completely. Without it, a trial lesson becomes a general conversation about the subject. With it, the tutor arrives having already mapped where the marks went and can spend the hour on the pattern rather than on discovery. Schools in Dubai generally return mocks within two to three weeks of sitting, and asking the subject teacher for the mark scheme alongside the script is a normal request.

The trial lesson is free and carries no condition beyond scheduling it. Its purpose is narrow: can this tutor explain this subject to this student, and does the student want to come back. Mock preparation collapses quickly if the student is not willing, which is why we would rather a family walk away after a trial than commit to six weeks on a poor match. If the fit is wrong we will say so first.

After that the shape depends on how much time is left. Six weeks or more out from a mock, weekly sessions with marked work in between is the usual pattern. Two or three weeks out, a narrower intensive on the published mock scope makes more sense. After mocks, the work is diagnostic repair first and then full timed-paper rotation towards the May session. All of it runs in Gulf Standard Time, so sessions sit in the evening a Dubai family actually has rather than in a time zone that suits the tutor.

Where we tutor

Mock season across Dubai's communities

Mock windows and school-run timings differ by community, and both decide when a session can realistically happen. Below is what the mock weeks look like in some of the Dubai areas families contact us from.

Dubai Hills Estate

A young community with a heavy DP2 population across nearby IB and British schools. Mock fortnights here often collide with winter travel, so families tend to front-load sessions into late November.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Feeds several established Diploma cohorts. Pick-up times are late enough that a 6pm Gulf-time session usually works better than a 4:30pm one during mock weeks.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Mostly British-curriculum schools with IB Diploma at a handful. Mock preparation requests here frequently come from IGCSE-trained students meeting IB command terms for the first time.

Arabian Ranches

Villa community with long school runs. Mock-period sessions tend to be booked in 90-minute blocks twice a week rather than shorter daily slots, because the travel pattern makes short evening slots impractical.

Downtown and Business Bay

Apartment living and shorter commutes, so earlier weekday sessions are feasible. Many students here attend schools outside the district, which means mock windows vary household to household.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Dense school cluster with IB Diploma running alongside British provision. Mock timetables at adjacent schools can differ by three weeks, so a shared revision plan between friends rarely fits both.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Largely Indian and British curriculum, with IB families travelling further to school. Mock-season demand peaks in January here, later than in the Marina and Hills communities.

Dubai Marina and JLT

High-rise families with short commutes and compressed evenings. Mock preparation is often needed at speed, with four or five weeks' notice rather than a term's planning.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

IB Diploma schools in central and new Dubai

These schools run full Diploma cohorts and mark mocks against IB criteria, which is what makes a marked script from them worth working from. Mock windows differ between them by several weeks, so always check your own school's published dates rather than a friend's.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, level and mock grade

A one-line message with subject, level, the mock mark and the number of weeks until the next assessment is enough to check availability. We answer with whether a specialist in that exact combination is free, and we say no when the answer is no.

  2. 02

Share the marked script and mark scheme

The script is the single most useful document you can send. The tutor maps the mark distribution before the first session so the trial lesson is spent on the actual pattern rather than on finding out what the pattern is.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One session, no condition attached beyond booking a time. The student meets the tutor, works on a question from their own mock, and decides whether to continue. If the fit is wrong we will say so before you do.

Agree a plan against the school calendar

Session frequency and length are set against the school's own mock window, IA deadlines and the winter break, not against a template. The plan names which weeks are already full, because those are the weeks a generic plan quietly assumes are free.

Review at week three with marked evidence

At the halfway point the plan is checked against a new piece of marked work rather than against impressions. If the diagnosis was wrong, the plan changes. If the student needs a different tutor, that is arranged rather than defended.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The script comes first

Mock follow-up here begins with the marked paper, the mark scheme and the subject report. Most of what a student needs is visible in the mark distribution, and none of it is visible in the summary grade the parent was told.

Specialists, not generalists

Because sessions run online, the match is made on subject and level rather than on who can reach your community. For Diploma HL work that distinction is the whole point: criteria-level marking is a narrow skill.

Market rates published, not concealed

The AED bands on this page are other providers' published figures with the month they were read. Most pages ranking for these queries publish no price at all, and two quote in dollars Dubai families do not transact in.

The academic-honesty line is stated

Tutors teach, question and give feedback on the student's own work. Nothing assessed is written or edited to completion for them, and we name that boundary because at least one competing provider sells finished coursework.

Gulf Standard Time scheduling

Sessions are booked in the evening a Dubai household actually has, including post-Iftar slots during Ramadan and short-notice slots during the mock fortnight when school timetables shift without warning.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

When do Dubai IB schools actually sit Diploma mock exams?+

Most Dubai schools sit Diploma mocks in a window running from late November to early February, with DP2 cohorts taking two or three papers per subject across a fortnight. The exact dates are set school by school and can differ by three weeks between neighbouring schools, so confirm with your own IB coordinator rather than with other parents. Marked scripts usually come back within two to three weeks, and predicted grades follow soon after. If you are planning a revision block, build it around your school's published window and its Internal Assessment deadlines together, because the two almost always overlap.

Does a bad IB mock grade mean my child will get a bad final grade?+

No. The mock grade changes nothing on the final transcript, and the gap between a mock and a May result can be large in either direction. What the mock does is produce evidence, and the evidence is in the script rather than the grade. A 4 caused by command-term errors and a 4 caused by two unlearned topics need completely different work, and only the paper shows which you have. The mock grade does matter indirectly, because it informs the predicted grades a school submits to universities, which is why acting quickly on the script is worth more than worrying about the digit.

How many sessions does mock preparation usually take?+

It depends on which of the four common problems the script shows. A pacing or presentation problem is often largely fixed in two to four sessions of timed practice with marked feedback, because the student already knows the content. Two genuinely unlearned syllabus topics take longer, typically six to eight sessions in that subject. A student who needs both, in two subjects, is looking at a weekly commitment through to the May session. We would rather give you that estimate after seeing the marked paper than guess beforehand, and the estimate is revised at week three against new marked work.

Can a tutor help my child with an Internal Assessment during mock season?+

Yes, within the boundary the IB sets. A tutor can explain the assessment criteria, question the research question, discuss whether a method answers it, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor cannot write it, rewrite it, or edit it into shape, and anyone offering to is putting the whole Diploma at risk of a malpractice finding. One provider ranking for UAE IB queries sells completed Internal Assessments at around AED 3,750; that is not a service, it is an exposure. A good test is whether your child can explain their own argument without notes a week later.

What does IB mock preparation cost in Dubai?+

Published market rates in Dubai, read in October 2026, run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutoring, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 180 to 500 for in-home visits where travel is inside the rate, and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB and IGCSE specialists. One premium provider publishes AED 650. Monthly packages in the market sit around AED 799 online for eight sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for in-home blocks. Those are other providers' figures, not ours. Our own rate depends on subject, level and weeks remaining, and is confirmed after the free trial lesson.

Do you come to our home in Dubai for mock revision?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE tutoring one-to-one over live video, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. The honest case for that is not convenience, it is the tutor pool. An in-home arrangement limits you to specialists willing to drive to your community, which for something as narrow as Chemistry HL Paper 3 marking may be nobody. Online, the match is made on subject and level. Mock review also works unusually well on a shared screen, because tutor and student annotate the same scanned script together and the marked-up version is saved rather than left behind.

Which IB subjects do Dubai families most often need mock help with?+

Demand concentrates in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at both levels, the HL sciences, and Economics. Mathematics requests usually come from method-mark and non-calculator-paper losses rather than from conceptual gaps. Science requests cluster around Paper 2 extended responses, where a correct fact scores half the marks because the mark scheme wanted a mechanism. Economics requests are nearly always about diagram accuracy and evaluation. English A requests rise sharply in January, when students who scored well on coursework discover that Paper 1 unseen analysis is a different skill entirely from the one they had practised.

Is it too late to start if the mock is three weeks away?+

Three weeks is enough to change a mock result, provided the work narrows. At that distance there is no value in a broad syllabus refresh; the useful plan is the school's published mock scope, full-length timed papers on the specific papers being sat, and marked feedback between sessions. Three to five sessions across those weeks is the usual shape, often across two subjects. What three weeks cannot fix is a wide content gap built over a year, and we will tell you that rather than sell you hours against it. In that case the better target is the May session itself.

How do predicted grades relate to the mock result?+

Predicted grades are submitted by the school because university applications happen before any real IB result exists. Mocks are usually the strongest evidence a coordinator holds when deciding what to predict, which is why a weak mock has consequences beyond the mark itself. No tutoring provider influences a prediction, and one that implies it can should be treated carefully. What a student can influence is the evidence on the table when the prediction is made, so strong criteria-marked work produced in the fortnight after a weak mock is genuinely relevant and several Dubai schools will consider it.

Will mock revision sessions still run through Ramadan and the winter break?+

Yes, and many families prefer it. Ramadan brings shortened school days and a different household rhythm, and students frequently focus better in a post-Iftar evening slot than in a late afternoon one. Because every session is scheduled in Gulf Standard Time and delivered over live video, moving a recurring slot later in the evening for several weeks is straightforward. The same flexibility covers the winter break, when families travel: sessions can continue from wherever the student is, or pause and resume, as long as the plan is adjusted deliberately rather than by drift.

What should I ask my child's subject teacher after a mock?+

Four questions cover most of it. Which paper lost the most marks, and was it content or technique? Were there questions left blank, and was that time or knowledge? Which syllabus topics in this paper are still weak? And is the mock scope the same as the final paper's scope, or narrower? Also ask for the mark scheme alongside the script, which is a normal request and makes any outside support far more precise. Teachers in Dubai schools generally answer these readily, and the answers are worth more than a report comment written for a wider audience.

Does KHDA regulate private tutors in Dubai?+

Not individually. KHDA oversees private schools in Dubai and inspects them annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and it issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises. Individual private tutors are covered separately by the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published. IB Gram holds no KHDA permit and does not describe itself as KHDA approved, because that phrase means something specific that we do not hold.

How is mock preparation different from ordinary subject tutoring?+

Ordinary tutoring works forwards through a syllabus. Mock preparation works backwards from a specific marked paper, which makes it narrower and usually shorter. The input is the script, the mark scheme and the teacher's comments; the output is a list of the particular habits costing marks, and practice aimed at those. It also has a deadline that cannot move, so content that will not be assessed gets cut from the plan deliberately. After the mock the work widens again into full past-paper rotation towards the May session, which is a different exercise with a different rhythm.

Can we work on two subjects at once before a mock?+

Often yes, and in the pre-mock weeks it is common, because mocks arrive in a cluster rather than one at a time. The practical limit is the student's week rather than our availability: two 90-minute sessions plus the timed practice between them is roughly the ceiling for a DP2 student who also has school, an Internal Assessment in progress and the mandatory UAE subjects on the timetable. Beyond that, nothing gets done properly. If three subjects genuinely need work, we would usually sequence them rather than run them in parallel and tell you which to start with.

What if nobody covers my child's HL subject during the mock fortnight?+

We say so. Availability in Diploma HL sciences and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL tightens sharply during the Dubai mock window, because every school's mock period overlaps and demand concentrates into the same weeks. When the exact specialist is not free, we will tell you the realistic wait rather than offer a near match and hope. In some cases a tutor from outside the UAE covers the subject at the same online format and Gulf-time scheduling, and we name that openly, because concealing where a tutor is based is one of the trust failures common on competing pages.

Start from the paper your child has already sat

A mock result is information, and most of it is still sitting in the script rather than in the grade. Send the subject, the level, the mark and the weeks remaining, and we will tell you whether a specialist in that exact combination is free. Share the marked paper and the mark scheme, and the first session starts from where the marks actually went instead of from a general conversation about the subject. The trial lesson is free and carries no condition. Everything runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, so the session sits in the evening your household has.
