IB DP Year 1 Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Year 1 tutor in Dubai works in the year where nothing is submitted and everything is decided. Subject levels get confirmed, the Extended Essay topic is chosen, the first Internal Assessment drafts appear, and the gap between an MYP or IGCSE finish and Diploma standard becomes visible. This page is built around the record: drafts dated, papers marked, movement written down. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every DP1 session leaves a dated draft or a marked script behind
  • HL and SL fit audited from marked papers, while a change is still possible
  • IA and EE feedback given on the student's own writing only, never on ours
  • One free 30-minute trial lesson per family, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The year with no exams and all the consequences

IB Diploma Year 1 produces no external result, which is why it is the year families most often leave alone. It is also the year in which the subject combination is locked, the Higher Level choices stop being reversible, the Extended Essay subject and research question are settled, Theory of Knowledge starts, and the first Internal Assessment drafts get written. Every one of those has a two-year consequence, and none of them generates a mark that would warn a parent in time.

So the useful work in DP1 is to create the warning signals that the year does not supply on its own. That means marked papers rather than teacher comment, dated drafts rather than a sense that the essay is coming along, and a written record of movement across the year. A DP1 student who scored 4 on a timed paper in November and 5 in March has demonstrably moved. A DP1 student whose EE research question has been reworded four times and never narrowed has demonstrably not, and a parent can see it in the dates.

The most consequential DP1 decision is level. A Dubai student arriving from IGCSE or MYP typically chooses three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects in the spring before DP1, often on the basis of enjoyment or a predicted career rather than marked evidence. By December of DP1 the evidence exists, and in most Dubai schools a level change is still administratively possible for a few more weeks. Missing that window is the single most expensive thing that happens quietly in Year 1.

Maths is the sharpest version of the problem, because the route choice is also a university decision. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are different subjects with different papers, and some engineering, physics, economics and computer-science courses specify one of them. A student placed in Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level who is scoring in the low teens on a Paper 1 in October has a decision to make while it is still a decision. Deferring it to February turns a choice into an outcome, because by then the teaching set, the timetable and the completed practical work have all settled around the original placement, and the school has little left to offer but sympathy.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. In DP1 the practical consequence is that the work is draft-based and screen-shared: comments sit in the margin of the student's own document, both parties see the subject guide's criteria alongside it, and every version is saved and dated. That record is the whole point of tutoring a year that produces no marks of its own.

At a glance

  • HL and SL fit reviewed from marked papers before the school's change window closes
  • Maths route audited against the actual university requirements, not a guess
  • EE research question dated at each narrowing, so drift is visible
  • IA drafts commented in the student's own document, versions kept
  • Gulf Standard Time scheduling, post-Iftar slots through Ramadan
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

DP Year 1 sits between two very different things: the qualification that preceded it and the examined year that follows. Three stages matter to a Dubai family planning the first Diploma year, plus the route that is not the Diploma at all.

PRE-DPAges 15-16 · the year before DP1

MYP Year 5 or IGCSE Year 11

Two very different preparations. MYP students arrive comfortable with criterion-referenced assessment, inquiry and extended writing but often light on examined technique and content volume. IGCSE students arrive the other way round: fluent at timed papers and short-answer precision, unprepared for a 4,000-word independent essay or a criterion grid. Neither is better; they fail differently in DP1.

Dubai runs both feeds into the same Diploma cohorts. A DP1 class in an IB World School in the emirate commonly mixes MYP graduates from the same school with IGCSE graduates from British-curriculum schools nearby, and the two groups need different first terms. Diagnosing which one a student is settles the first month of tutoring.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma Programme Year 1

Six subjects at the chosen levels, TOK beginning, CAS running, the EE subject and supervisor allocated, and the first IA work in most subjects. No external assessment. The deliverables that matter are internal: a level decision confirmed or changed, an EE research question narrowed to something answerable, and at least one IA moved from idea to data or first draft.

Dubai's academic year runs late August to late June or early July, which puts the DP1 EE kick-off in the autumn block and the first IA deadlines in the spring. The long December break is the single most useful EE research window in the two-year course, and it is the one most commonly wasted.

DP2Ages 17-18 · Year 13

Diploma Programme Year 2

Final IA submissions, the TOK essay and exhibition, the EE final version, predicted grades for university applications, and the May examinations. Almost every DP2 pressure point is set up in DP1. A student entering DP2 with two IAs at draft stage and a narrowed EE has a manageable year; a student entering with neither has a year of simultaneous deadlines.

UAE schools sit the May session. Specific IB session and results dates are not published on this page: ibo.org blocks automated checking, so no IB date here has been confirmed from the IB itself. Confirm dates with the school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org directly.

The courses route and the A Level alternative

Not every DP1 student should finish the full Diploma. IB Course candidates take individual subjects and receive certificates rather than the Diploma, which is a legitimate outcome for a student whose six-subject load is unsustainable. Several Dubai schools also run A Levels alongside the Diploma, and a transfer at the end of DP1 is occasionally the right call.

The UAE Ministry of Education publishes equivalency requirements by curriculum, and the British-track rule is specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. No IB points threshold has been verified from the ministry's own pages, so none is stated here.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

DP1 tutoring is booked by subject and level, and the first conversation is always about the level rather than the content. These are the DP1 subjects most requested by Dubai families, with the thing that actually decides the first-year trajectory in each.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route that keeps engineering and physics degrees open and the one most commonly over-chosen at Higher Level. DP1 performance on a Paper 1 without a calculator is the honest signal. The IA, a mathematical exploration carrying 20 per cent, is usually started late in DP1.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Calculator-permitted throughout, modelling and statistics heavy, and the right route for a large share of students who were placed in Analysis and Approaches by default. Check named university requirements before switching, because some courses specify the Analysis route explicitly.

Physics

HL and SL

The DP1 difficulty is mathematical rather than conceptual: algebraic rearrangement, logarithms and graph linearisation. The scientific investigation carrying 20 per cent is usually planned in DP1, and a weak research question chosen now costs marks eighteen months later.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Moles, energetics and the start of organic chemistry fill DP1. Students who arrived from IGCSE without secure mole calculations spend DP1 behind, and the gap is invisible until a timed paper. The investigation needs a measurable, varied, genuinely quantitative question.

Biology

HL and SL

The content volume is the DP1 shock and the command-term discipline is the DP1 fix. Scripts lose marks for description where explanation was asked and for answering data questions without quoting the data. The investigation requires real quantitative data, which rules out many first ideas.

Economics

HL and SL

Three commentaries of 800 words each, on different units of the syllabus and from different published news sources, form the IA. The first is usually written in DP1 and is usually the weakest of the three. Diagram accuracy sets the band on every paper.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

DP1 builds the Individual Oral: a global issue, two works, a 15-minute assessed conversation. Students who leave the global issue vague until DP2 have a harder oral. Higher Level adds an essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words on a work studied.

Business Management

HL and SL

Application to a real organisation is the whole skill, and DP1 answers default to generic theory. The IA depends on access to a real business, so identifying one early in DP1 is a practical constraint rather than an academic one.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma candidates

Starts in DP1 and is widely treated as the subject with no homework. The exhibition of three objects with a 950-word commentary and the 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title are the two assessed pieces, and they contribute to the three bonus points alongside the EE.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

Arabic first or additional language, Islamic Education, Social Studies

Dubai private schools teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral studies alongside the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students. A DP1 timetable therefore carries more than the six Diploma subjects, which matters when planning weekly hours.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

DP1 is a long year with no external deadline, so the pattern that works is low frequency held consistently, with two or three concentrated pushes on the things that actually have deadlines.

Fortnightly subject session with a marked paper

One 60-minute session every two weeks per subject, each opening with a timed paper or structured question marked against the subject guide's criteria. DP1 does not need weekly contact in most subjects; it needs a consistent measurement that makes the level decision evidence-based by December.

  • 60 minutes fortnightly, live video, one subject per slot
  • Timed component marked to the published criteria between sessions
  • Dated record of marks so December has a trend, not a snapshot
  • Written note to the parent after each session

Level and route audit, single piece of work

Two sessions and two marked papers per subject in question, ending in a written recommendation on Higher or Standard Level, and on Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation where maths is involved. Checked against the stated requirements of the universities actually on the student's list.

  • Two marked papers per subject under review
  • Written recommendation with the marks attached
  • Maths route checked against named university requirements
  • Usable in the school's level-change conversation

EE and IA process coaching

Scheduled around the school's own internal deadlines rather than weekly. Sessions work on the student's own document: narrowing a research question, testing whether data can actually be collected, reading a draft against the published criteria. The student writes every word; the tutor questions and marks.

  • Booked against the school's internal EE and IA deadlines
  • Feedback written in the margin of the student's own draft
  • Criteria letters and mark allocations named explicitly
  • Version history kept, so narrowing and drift are both visible

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB DP Year 1 tutor in Dubai is actually for

  • Timed papers marked to criteria and dated, so December has a trend
  • EE question and IA feasibility settled while they are still cheap to change
  • MYP or IGCSE transition gap diagnosed in September, not February
  • Written record a parent can read without a meeting

An IB DP Year 1 tutor in Dubai exists to generate evidence in a year that produces none. There is no external assessment in DP1, no results slip, and in most Dubai schools two report cards whose grades are teacher judgements against criteria rather than marks from a paper. A family can reach June of DP1 with a broadly positive impression and no idea whether their son would score 3 or 5 in Physics Higher Level under exam conditions.

The alternative is not complicated. Sit a timed paper. Mark it against the published criteria. Record the mark and the date. Repeat every few weeks. By December there is a trend rather than an impression, and a trend is what a level decision needs. This is unglamorous work and it is the most useful thing a DP1 tutor does, because the decisions that depend on it are time-limited.

The second function is the independent-work pipeline. The Extended Essay and the Internal Assessments are set up in DP1 and submitted in DP2, and the common DP2 crisis is two or three of them arriving at draft stage simultaneously in the autumn. Every week of DP1 spent narrowing an EE research question or establishing that an IA's data can actually be collected removes a week of DP2 panic. Dated drafts are how a parent sees that happening.

The third is the transition diagnosis. A Dubai DP1 cohort typically mixes MYP graduates and IGCSE graduates, and they arrive missing different things. Identifying which gap a student has in September decides what the first term is spent on, and getting it wrong wastes the one term in the Diploma that has any slack in it.

02

The DP1 workload map: what actually starts this year

Most DP1 stress comes from not knowing what the year is supposed to contain. Six subjects plus three core elements produce around a dozen distinct pieces of assessed work across two years, and roughly half of them begin in Year 1 without being due in it. A map of that is worth more at the start of DP1 than any single lesson, because it converts a vague sense of pressure into a sequence with dates.

The three core elements behave differently. Theory of Knowledge starts in DP1 and is widely under-weighted because it carries no homework in the conventional sense; its exhibition requires three objects and a 950-word commentary, and the essay is 1,600 words on a prescribed title. The Extended Essay has a 4,000-word ceiling, around 40 hours of expected work, a supervisor and three recorded reflection sessions. CAS runs continuously and is a completion requirement rather than a graded one, which means it is the thing most often left until it threatens the Diploma itself.

The subject Internal Assessments are the bulk. Each carries a significant share of the subject grade — 20 per cent in the sciences and in mathematics, 30 per cent at Standard Level in economics — and each has a published set of criteria with letters and mark allocations. Almost no competing tutoring page in this market names a single criterion letter, which is remarkable given that the criteria are what the mark is awarded against.

The table below is the DP1 sequencing map used to plan a year. School internal deadlines vary considerably across Dubai, so confirm each one with the subject teacher or IB coordinator rather than working from a generic schedule.

03

The level decision: Higher, Standard, and the maths route

Three Higher Level subjects and three Standard Level is the standard Diploma shape, and the choice is usually made in the spring before DP1 on the basis of IGCSE or MYP performance, interest and a provisional university idea. By November of DP1 there is marked evidence about whether it was right, and in most Dubai schools a change is administratively possible for a limited period after that. The window is the asset, and it closes quietly.

The signal to watch is not the grade but the composition of the loss. A student scoring 3 in Chemistry Higher Level whose lost marks are concentrated in two topics has a content problem that teaching fixes. A student scoring 3 whose losses are spread evenly across every paper, every topic and every question type is telling you the level is wrong, and no quantity of tutoring converts that into a 6 over eighteen months. Distinguishing those two cases is exactly what a marked paper does and a report card does not.

Maths is a separate decision because the route matters as much as the level. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented; Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics-oriented and permits a calculator throughout. Some engineering, physics, mathematics and economics degrees specify the Analysis route, and others accept either. The correct order of operations is to read the stated requirements of the universities on the student's actual list, then look at the marked papers, then decide. Doing it the other way round produces a route chosen for prestige.

The table sets out what differs. It is worth noting what is not on it: a claim that one route is easier. At Higher Level both are demanding, they are demanding in different ways, and the student who struggles with abstraction and the student who struggles with sustained modelling are different students.

04

The MYP and IGCSE gaps into DP1, and how they differ

  • MYP arrivals: content volume and timed-paper technique first
  • IGCSE arrivals: independent extended writing and the EE question first
  • CBSE and American arrivals: a content-order audit before any teaching
  • One diagnostic paper identifies the group inside ninety minutes

A Dubai DP1 cohort is usually fed from two directions, and the two groups fail in opposite ways. Students arriving from MYP Year 5 are comfortable with criterion-referenced marking, inquiry-led tasks and extended writing. They are frequently light on content volume and on examined technique, because MYP assessment does not run on timed external papers. Their DP1 risk is a slow realisation that six subjects of Diploma content is a different quantity of material.

Students arriving from IGCSE are the mirror image. They are fluent at timed papers, short-answer precision and mark-scheme compliance, having spent two years practising exactly that. They are usually unprepared for independent extended work: a 4,000-word essay with a self-chosen question, a 950-word TOK commentary built around objects they select, an investigation whose method they design. Their DP1 risk is the core, not the subjects.

There is a third group in Dubai worth naming: students transferring from a CBSE or American curriculum into DP1. For them the content order is the issue — topics met in a different sequence, or not met at all — and a specification map is more useful in the first month than any teaching. A diagnostic paper identifies which of the three groups a student belongs to in about ninety minutes.

The practical consequence is that the first term of DP1 tutoring should look different for each group. For an MYP graduate it is content pace and timed-paper technique. For an IGCSE graduate it is extended-writing scaffolding and the EE question. For a transferring student it is a gap audit. A programme that gives all three the same first term is giving at least two of them the wrong one.

05

The honesty boundary on IAs, the EE and TOK

DP1 is where the boundary is either established or quietly crossed, so it is worth stating precisely before the first draft. A tutor may teach the skills a component requires, discuss the student's own plan, question their reasoning, point to the published criteria, and give written feedback on a draft the student produced. A tutor may not supply text for submission, rewrite a draft into its final form, choose and develop the research question on the student's behalf, or hand over a worked investigation.

This is not a cautious position; it is the rule the student is bound by. IB academic honesty requirements make the submitted work the student's own, and work that is not carries a malpractice finding against the student rather than the tutor. The market in this region contains providers selling exactly what is prohibited: one UAE-facing site advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. A family paying for that is buying a risk the student carries alone.

The functional version of the boundary is more useful than the legal one. What a good DP1 session on an IA looks like: the student reads their own research question aloud, the tutor asks what the independent variable is and how many values of it will be tested, the student discovers the question cannot generate quantitative data, and they rewrite it themselves in the session. Nothing was written for them and the IA improved substantially. That is the whole method.

Reflection sessions are a related point. The Extended Essay requires recorded reflection sessions with the school supervisor, and the reflections form part of the assessment. A tutor is not the supervisor and should not present themselves as one; the supervisor relationship belongs to the school. Keeping that boundary clear also keeps the student's own record accurate, which matters because the reflections are assessed.

06

TOK, the EE and the three bonus points

  • 42 points from six subjects, plus up to 3 from TOK and the EE together
  • EE: 4,000-word ceiling, around 40 hours, supervisor, recorded reflections
  • TOK: exhibition of three objects with a 950-word commentary, plus a 1,600-word essay
  • A research question that is too broad is the usual EE failure, not the prose

The Diploma's maximum is 45 points: up to 7 in each of six subjects, which gives 42, plus up to 3 awarded from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together. Those three points are the most neglected marks in the course, and they are neglected because neither component looks like a subject. Both start in DP1.

The Extended Essay is an independent research piece with a 4,000-word ceiling, around 40 hours of expected work, a school supervisor and recorded reflection sessions. The assessment criteria cover focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation, and engagement, with critical thinking carrying the largest allocation. The practical DP1 failure is almost never the writing; it is a research question too broad to be answered in 4,000 words, which guarantees a descriptive essay however well written.

Theory of Knowledge has two assessed pieces: an exhibition of three objects with a commentary of up to 950 words, and an essay of up to 1,600 words on one of six prescribed titles released by the IB. The exhibition usually falls in DP1 in Dubai schools. TOK rewards precision about knowledge claims, and the common DP1 error is treating it as an opinion essay, which produces fluent writing that scores in the lower bands.

For a DP1 family the arithmetic is worth doing explicitly. A student predicted 34 points from subjects with the bonus points unaddressed is a student with three points available for work that is already timetabled. Universities with point conditions do not distinguish between a point earned in Chemistry and a point earned from the core. Neglecting the core to protect subject grades is a common and expensive trade.

07

What Diploma Year 1 support costs in the Dubai market

Take the cheapest honest route first. A DP1 family does not need weekly sessions in six subjects, and the market's budget tier exists: EdFlik publishes online tuition from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52. At that tier the realistic product is content review and homework supervision rather than criterion-referenced marking, which for a DP1 level audit is not the thing being bought.

The mid band is where most DP1 plans sit. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 an hour and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist work. The Bestimate rate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and premium named listings reach AED 650 at BartyED. Those are the market's published figures, read in October 2026, and they are the benchmark any quote should be held against.

Monthly, DP1 is cheaper than DP2 because the sensible frequency is lower. Fortnightly sessions in two subjects across a Dubai academic year is roughly eighteen hours per subject. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240-600 at the budget tier, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work; halve the frequency and the DP1 figure halves with it. Advertised packages in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions.

The in-home comparison is worth making once. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200-500, against a qualified online band of AED 150-300. The premium buys travel. For DP1 work, which is largely draft annotation and criterion-referenced marking on a shared screen, there is nothing in the premium that improves the product. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

Dubai's Diploma landscape: KHDA, the mandatory subjects and the DP1 week

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects annually against a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. The sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, and the International Baccalaureate accounted for a small but growing share of that enrolment. Seven new private schools were approved for the 2026-27 intake, three of them International Baccalaureate, adding 16,846 places.

The regulatory requirement that shapes a DP1 week is the mandatory subjects. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral studies are taught in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA's requirements due to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for the two groups are prohibited because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ.

For a Diploma student the effect is a timetable carrying more than six subjects plus the core. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, and advises that no such lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes. A DP1 student is therefore carrying additional internally assessed work alongside a programme designed on the assumption of six subjects, and any realistic weekly plan has to account for it rather than treat it as free time.

Two constraints on how a tutor may handle those subjects. The use of different or additional content in the mandatory subjects without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, so any support works from the school's own materials. Teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic must hold the relevant approval from KHDA for those subjects. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education or the International Baccalaureate, and nothing here should be read as implying otherwise.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery removes the commute, not the calendar. DP1 sessions have to fit around CAS commitments, school EE deadlines and a longer school day than Year 11 had, and that lands differently across Dubai.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Apartment living and short commutes. DP1 students here are often home by four but working in shared space, so draft sessions with a shared screen and headphones at 5pm work better than late-evening slots.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

Several IB World Schools within a short radius, so DP1 cohorts are large and EE supervisor allocation is formal and early. Students here usually have a supervisor by October, which makes the first narrowing conversation genuinely useful.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Damac Hills

Long bus routes and heavy CAS activity in the villa communities. A DP1 session at 6.30pm after sport is standard here, and the written feedback goes out the same night to be read in the morning.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Established schools with mature Diploma programmes and stable subject offerings, so DP1 level changes are handled on a known timetable. The change window is usually documented, which makes the December evidence review worth scheduling precisely.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A high share of DP1 students arriving from IGCSE rather than MYP, often from a different school. The first-term priority here is the extended-writing gap rather than content, because IGCSE gives almost no practice at a 4,000-word independent piece.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Campus clusters with short commutes, making a 4.30pm DP1 start realistic. Families here often run a DP1 and a younger IGCSE sibling in consecutive slots on the same evening.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Dubai South

Newer IB provision with smaller DP1 cohorts, sometimes one teacher covering both HL and SL in a subject. With no parallel class to benchmark against, independently marked papers carry more weight in a level decision.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Central and coastal Dubai IB provision

Long-established Diploma programmes with full subject offerings at both levels, formal EE supervisor allocation and published results histories. DP1 families in this cluster usually come looking for an independent view on a level decision rather than for content teaching.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the level and the school

The useful opening message names the six subjects with their levels, the maths route, the school, and anything already decided about the EE. Level is the first thing that matters, because a DP1 session plan for Higher Level Physics and one for Standard Level are different plans with different papers.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken and no obligation. In DP1 the trial is usually spent on a single structured question or a paragraph of the student's own writing, marked live against the published criteria, so everyone sees the standard being applied before any plan is priced.

  3. 03

Diagnostic paper and the transition read

One timed paper per subject under review, marked to the published criteria, plus a short read on whether the student is carrying an MYP gap, an IGCSE gap or a curriculum-transfer gap. That single judgement decides what the first DP1 term is spent on, and getting it right saves the only term with slack in it.

  4. 04

Level and route recommendation in writing

Where a level or maths route is in question, two marked papers and a written recommendation, with the marks attached and the target universities' stated requirements checked. It is written to be taken into the school's change conversation while that conversation is still possible.

  5. 05

Fortnightly sessions with a dated record

Sessions on Gulf Standard Time with a marked component each time and the result recorded against the date. By December the file contains a trend rather than an impression, which is what the level decision and the DP2 plan both need. Reports go to the parent the same evening.

  6. 06

EE and IA checkpoints against school deadlines

Sessions booked around the school's own internal deadlines: question narrowing, data feasibility, first draft read against the criteria. Every comment sits in the margin of the student's own document and every version is kept, so narrowing and drift are both visible in the record.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Evidence in a year that produces none

DP1 has no external assessment, so the measurement has to be created. Timed papers marked to published criteria and recorded against dates turn an impression into a trend, and the trend is what a level decision in December actually requires.

The level decision is written down and dated

Higher against Standard, and Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation, are decided from two marked papers and the stated requirements of real universities, then set out in writing with the marks attached. A recommendation to drop a level is given when the evidence says so.

Drafts stay the student's own

Feedback is written in the margin of the student's document and the student does every rewrite. That is the IB rule and it is also what makes the record meaningful: a version history showing a question narrowing is evidence of the student's thinking, and a ghost-written draft is evidence of nothing.

Criteria named by letter and allocation

IA and EE feedback refers to the published criteria and what each is worth, rather than to general quality. Almost no competing page in this market names a single criterion, which is a strange omission given that the criteria are what the mark is awarded against.

Timed to the Dubai DP1 week

Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time around CAS commitments and a longer school day, with post-Iftar slots through Ramadan. The December break is treated as the EE research window it actually is rather than as a gap in the schedule.

Market rates attributed, not implied

Every AED figure here belongs to the provider or survey that published it, with the month it was read. Three of the six pages ranking for Dubai tutoring queries publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which leaves a parent with no way to judge a quote.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Does a DP1 student in Dubai really need a tutor in the first Diploma year?+

Not in six subjects, and often not weekly. What DP1 needs is measurement, because the year produces no external mark to warn anyone. The minimum useful version is one timed paper per subject of concern each few weeks, marked against the published criteria and dated, so that by December there is a trend rather than an impression. That is a small number of hours. Where DP1 genuinely needs teaching is a transition gap after MYP, IGCSE or a curriculum transfer, and even then usually in one or two subjects for one term rather than across the year.

When does a DP1 level change stop being possible in a Dubai school?+

It varies by school and is usually earlier than families expect. Most Dubai Diploma programmes allow level changes for a limited period in the first term, after which the timetable, the teaching set and the subject registration make it impractical. Science Higher to Standard moves tend to be the most time-sensitive because of practical work already completed. The practical advice is to ask the IB coordinator for the actual date in September, then schedule the marked-paper evidence to exist before it. A level decision taken in February with no marked papers behind it is a decision taken on feeling.

How do we tell whether Higher Level is the wrong level or just hard?+

Look at how the lost marks are distributed rather than at the total. A student scoring low with losses concentrated in two or three named topics has a content problem, and content problems respond to teaching across eighteen months. A student scoring low with losses spread evenly across every paper, topic and question type is being told the level is wrong, and no realistic amount of tutoring converts that into a top grade. Two marked papers, a few weeks apart, distinguish those cases. A report card grade cannot, because it compresses both patterns into the same number.

Should a Dubai DP1 student take Maths Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation?+

Read the stated requirements of the universities actually on the student's list first, because some engineering, physics, mathematics and economics courses specify the Analysis route and others accept either. Then look at the marked evidence, particularly a Paper 1 sat without a calculator, since that is where the Analysis route's algebraic and proof demands show up most plainly. Neither course is the easy one: Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics heavy and demanding in its own way. A route chosen for prestige rather than for a named requirement is the common and avoidable error.

What should a DP1 student have done on the Extended Essay by June?+

Subject chosen, supervisor allocated, first reflection session recorded with the school, sources gathered, and above all a research question narrow enough to be answered within the 4,000-word ceiling. That last item is where DP1 essays succeed or fail. A broad question produces a descriptive essay however well it is written, because there is no room to argue anything. Data-based essays need one further thing by June: proof that the data can actually be obtained. Discovering in DP2 that an archive is inaccessible or a survey cannot be run is the most common EE emergency.

Why does Theory of Knowledge get neglected in the first Diploma year?+

Because it looks like the subject with no homework. TOK usually has one timetabled lesson a week, no content to revise and no past papers to drill, so it loses every scheduling contest against a subject with a deadline. The cost is concrete: TOK and the Extended Essay together award up to three of the Diploma's 45 points, and those points count the same as points earned in a subject. The two assessed pieces are an exhibition of three objects with a commentary of up to 950 words and an essay of up to 1,600 words on a prescribed title. The exhibition typically falls in DP1.

Can a tutor help with my child's Internal Assessment in DP1?+

Within a boundary that should be stated before the first session. A tutor may teach the skills the IA requires, discuss the student's own plan, question whether the research question can generate the data it needs, name the published criteria and what each is worth, and give written feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not supply text for submission, rewrite a draft into its final form, or produce the investigation. Work that is not the student's own carries a malpractice finding against the student. One UAE-facing site advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; that is the thing to refuse.

Is the IB Diploma harder than A Levels for a Dubai student?+

It is broader rather than uniformly harder, and the difference matters for the DP1 decision. The Diploma requires six subjects across groups plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, so a student cannot drop the subject they dislike. A Levels allow three or four subjects and no core, which suits depth and suits a student with a clear direction. A DP1 student who is sustaining the subjects but drowning in the breadth is a candidate for a conversation about A Levels or the IB Course route, and several Dubai schools offer both programmes.

What is the gap between IGCSE and Diploma Year 1 in practice?+

IGCSE builds timed-paper fluency, short-answer precision and mark-scheme compliance, which transfers well into Diploma examinations. What it does not build is independent extended work, and DP1 asks for a great deal of it at once: a 4,000-word essay on a self-chosen question, a Theory of Knowledge commentary built around objects the student selects, an investigation whose method the student designs. IGCSE graduates in Dubai therefore tend to find the core harder than the subjects in the first Diploma year, and the first term of support is usually better spent on extended-writing scaffolding than on content.

What is the gap between MYP Year 5 and Diploma Year 1?+

The mirror image of the IGCSE one. MYP students arrive comfortable with criterion-referenced assessment, inquiry tasks and extended writing, which maps neatly onto the Extended Essay and the Internal Assessments. What they often arrive without is content volume and timed-paper technique, because MYP assessment does not run on external timed papers. The DP1 risk is a gradual realisation in the spring that six subjects of Diploma content is a different quantity of material, by which point the slack in the year has gone. A timed paper in September identifies it immediately.

How much does Diploma Year 1 tutoring cost per month in Dubai?+

Less than DP2, because the sensible frequency is lower. Fortnightly sessions in two subjects across a Dubai academic year is roughly eighteen hours per subject. The Bestimate survey's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240-600 at the budget tier, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work; at fortnightly frequency the DP1 figure sits well below those. Published hourly rates read in October 2026 include EdFlik from AED 45-65, Unitors IB from AED 200 and TutorChase at AED 270. IB Gram quotes against a plan rather than a rate card.

Which exam session will a Dubai Diploma student sit?+

UAE schools sit the May session, and that is the one a DP1 student is working toward across two years. No specific IB exam or results date appears on this page, and the reason is worth stating: the IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no date here has been confirmed from the IB directly. Dates circulating on tutoring sites are secondary sources and some of them are wrong. Confirm the session dates with the school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org before planning anything around them, and treat the November session as the Southern Hemisphere sitting rather than the Dubai one.

Do private tutors working with Diploma students in Dubai need a permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated through a Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Applications go through MoHRE's own 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' service, with a stated two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published.

What happens if no tutor is free for a niche DP1 subject combination?+

You get told, with the options named rather than a substitute quietly supplied. Narrow Diploma requests do run short — Higher Level Further Mathematics, Global Politics, a Group 2 language at ab initio level, Music or Film at Higher Level — and the realistic choices are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. All three are better than a general subject tutor placed into a Diploma subject guide they have not taught. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Can DP1 sessions move around CAS, Ramadan and the Dubai school breaks?+

Yes, and in DP1 the breaks are the most valuable slots in the year. Dubai's long December break is the single best Extended Essay research window in the two-year course, and three or four sessions placed inside it move an EE further than a term of fortnightly check-ins. Through Ramadan sessions shift to post-Iftar times and the written task between sessions is usually reduced. CAS commitments and school sport are scheduled around rather than competed with, because a DP1 student who skips CAS to attend tutoring is creating a different problem for DP2.

Measure DP1 before it decides anything

Diploma Year 1 hands out no marks and makes most of the decisions, so the cheapest useful step is to create a measurement the year does not supply. One timed paper per subject of concern, marked against the published criteria and dated, plus an honest read on whether the Extended Essay question is narrow enough to answer. Send the six subjects with their levels, the maths route and the school, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and read the diagnostic before committing to anything. If the papers come back strong, the recommendation will be to leave it alone until DP2.
