IB IGCSE Tutor for Repton School Dubai Students in Dubai

Hiring an IB IGCSE tutor for Repton School Dubai students in Dubai is easy. Knowing whether it worked is the hard part, and most families never find out until results. This page sets out what evidence to demand: marked scripts, lost marks counted by cause, a mock cycle used as a measurement, and a draft that shows which criterion it misses. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Lost marks counted by cause, not described as carelessness
  • Mock results read as data rather than as a verdict
  • A written risk list updated monthly with the scripts attached
  • Free trial lesson before anything is paid, parent able to listen in

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Most tutoring is bought on trust and never measured

A Repton School Dubai family hiring a tutor usually gets a reasonable experience and almost never gets evidence. Sessions happen, the student reports that they are helpful, a term passes, and the next data point is a mock or a real result. If the grade moved, the tutoring is credited. If it did not, the conclusion is usually that the child needs to work harder. Neither inference is supported by anything, because nobody measured.

This is fixable with two documents and a monthly habit, and it costs nothing. The first document is a marked script from a paper sat under genuine timing, with every lost mark attributed to a cause rather than listed by topic. The second is a risk list built from it and updated monthly, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged and the marked work that justifies the marking. That is the entire apparatus. It takes a tutor ten minutes a month to maintain if they are working from it and cannot be produced at all if they are not.

The reason to insist on causes rather than topics is that a lost mark has six possible origins and they need different remedies. Content not known. Content known but not recalled under pressure. Question misread. Command term misread. Method correct but not written out. Time ran out. A student told to revise more will apply the wrong remedy to five of those six, and a tutor who starts teaching before knowing the mix is guessing with your money and your child's term.

Repton School Dubai sits at Nad Al Sheba with a second campus in Al Barsha, runs the British curriculum through IGCSE, and offers a sixth form where families choose between routes; confirm the current provision directly with the school, since school offers change. That structure makes the evidence question sharper, because a student crossing from IGCSE into the Diploma inside one institution changes assessment system without changing building, and the measurements that worked in Year 11 do not transfer unchanged to Year 12.

IB Gram supports Repton families with one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, stated the same way on every country page here. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. What the online format adds to an evidence-led arrangement is specific: a slot that is a start time rather than an arrival window, and work marked between sessions rather than glanced at in the room. Marking between sessions is the part that produces the evidence, because a script annotated properly away from the student is a document you can read, while a correction made verbally across a table in the room leaves nothing behind for anybody to check a month later.

At a glance

  • Two documents make tutoring measurable: a marked script and a risk list
  • A lost mark has six possible causes, each with a different remedy
  • Closed means the same question type correct twice under timing, two weeks apart
  • Boundaries are set per series, so a mock percentage is an estimate not a grade
  • Lessons for Repton families are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages, and the evidence changes at each one. What counts as proof in Year 10 is not what counts in the final Diploma year.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Terminal written papers with tiering into Core and Extended on Cambridge or Foundation and Higher on Pearson Edexcel, and a board-dependent practical arrangement in the sciences. Almost everything is measured at the end, which makes interim measurement entirely the family's responsibility.

The evidence at this stage is a timed past paper marked against the official scheme. Nothing else is comparable to the real thing, because a question attempted without a clock measures knowledge rather than performance, and the gap between those two is where most of the lost marks in a Repton cohort's scripts actually sit.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum. Internal assessment carries real weight in every subject, which gives a second, independent kind of evidence to track.

Here the evidence is two-track: timed papers on one side and marked drafts on the other. A marked draft is the better early signal because the criteria are published and the work is untimed, so a weakness shows up cleanly rather than being tangled with pacing. Ask for both, from the first month.

A LEVELAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level, where that route is taken

Three or four subjects taken deeper, with no compulsory core and limited coursework. Entry is gated on IGCSE grades in the same subject, usually at a B or better, which is the real reason Year 10 tier decisions reach forward two years.

Evidence on this route is almost entirely paper-based, which makes it the simplest of the three to measure and the easiest to leave unmeasured. A student taking three subjects should have one timed, marked paper per subject per term at minimum, and the lost marks counted by cause each time rather than summarised.

CROSSAges 16 · End of Year 11

The crossing at sixteen

Moving from Extended IGCSE into Higher Level Diploma or into A Level is a real step, and it is different in each subject. Mathematics is the largest: calculus arrives properly and proof becomes examinable, which a strong Extended grade does not guarantee readiness for.

For a Repton student the crossing happens inside one school, which hides it. The curriculum changes while the corridors do not, and families therefore plan for it less than families who are also changing institution. A summer block of six to ten sessions in the subject with the largest gap is the cheapest intervention available at this point.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

For each subject below, the note names the evidence that shows whether tutoring is working. It differs by subject more than families expect.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Evidence is method marks earned on structured questions, visible in the script even where the final answer is wrong. Weightings: Standard Level two papers at forty per cent each plus the Exploration at twenty; Higher Level three papers at thirty, thirty and twenty with the Exploration at twenty.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Evidence is a written interpretation in context rather than a bare answer, because that is what the scheme rewards. Calculator technique is examinable in itself, so a script showing the steps the screen produced is worth more than one showing only the output.

Physics

HL and SL

Evidence splits: performance on the Paper 1 data-analysis section, which rewards practice on unfamiliar graphs, and sign-convention accuracy on extended calculation. Paper 1 carries thirty-six per cent, Paper 2 forty-four, and the investigation twenty.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Evidence is recall items closing fast and mechanisms closing slowly. Organic conditions and ion tests should disappear from a risk list within three weeks; energetics calculation takes longer and should not be expected to move at the same rate.

Biology

HL and SL

Evidence is command-term compliance. Count how many marks were lost on a script to answering describe where the question asked explain, then count again a month later. It is the single largest avoidable loss in the subject and it is measurable to the mark.

Economics

HL and SL

Evidence is diagram marks, which are awarded individually for labelled axes, correct initial position, correct shift direction and the new equilibrium. Count them on two scripts a month apart. The portfolio is three commentaries of no more than 800 words each.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Evidence is a sentence about effect where there was previously a sentence about technique. That change is visible in the text and is the whole of Paper 1 analysis, worth thirty-five per cent at both levels. The HL Essay adds twenty per cent at Higher Level.

IGCSE Mathematics (0580; Edexcel 4MA1)

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Evidence is written method on the final parts of structured questions. A student who shows a correct method and slips on arithmetic keeps most of the marks; one who writes only an answer loses marks already earned. The split between the non-calculator and calculator papers differs by board.

IGCSE Sciences (0625, 0620, 0610; Edexcel 4PH1, 4CH1, 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Evidence depends on the board. Cambridge carries a practical component worth twenty per cent, sat as a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; Pearson Edexcel has no separate practical exam. Count losses separately per component rather than per subject.

IGCSE English and Humanities

Core and Extended

Evidence in English is register and audience control on directed writing, and own-words compliance on the summary question. In history and geography it is use of provenance and named examples with figures, both of which are countable on a marked script rather than impressionistic.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all online and one-to-one, distinguished by what evidence each produces. Pick the one whose output you actually want to read.

Weekly teaching with marked work between sessions

One session a week in one subject, with work set at the end and marked before the next one. The evidence stream is a marked piece every week and a risk list updated monthly. Suited to Year 10 and the first Diploma year, where nothing is yet being repaired against a deadline.

  • A fixed weekday and hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work marked against the official scheme, not against a model answer
  • Risk list updated monthly with the scripts attached

A measured eight-week run before a series

Opens with a full paper under exam timing, marked, with losses counted by cause. Each subsequent week attacks the largest remaining cause and closes with a short timed section to check the fix held. The evidence is the count falling, visible week by week rather than asserted at the end.

  • Baseline count established in session one
  • A named cause targeted each week, with a check
  • Final fortnight adds no new content at all

Draft-cycle coaching on internal assessments

For Diploma internal assessments and the core, where the work is the student's own throughout. The tutor explains the criteria in the board's wording, reads the draft the student wrote, and names which criterion it misses and why. The evidence is a second draft scoring in a higher band on the same criterion.

  • Criteria and word caps named before drafting begins
  • Feedback on the student's own text, never a rewrite
  • Two drafts compared on the same criterion, in writing

The six causes of a lost mark, and why the distinction is the whole thing

Take a marked script and go through it mark by mark. Every lost mark has a cause, and in practice there are six. The student did not know the content. The student knew it and could not retrieve it under pressure. The student misread what the question was asking. The student read the question correctly but answered a different command — described where the paper said explain. The student had the right method and did not write it down, so the method marks were never available. Or the student ran out of time.

Those six have nothing in common as problems. Content not known needs teaching. Content not retrieved needs retrieval practice, which is a different activity involving low-stakes testing rather than explanation. A misread question needs slower reading and underlining, which is a behaviour. A misread command term needs the command-term list and an hour sorting past questions by it. An unwritten method needs a habit change and nothing else. Running out of time needs section timing targets.

Now consider what happens when a family is told simply that their child must revise more. That instruction is the correct remedy for exactly one of the six, and the wrong one for five. It is also what most tutoring defaults to, because teaching is what tutors are set up to do and the other five remedies look less like a lesson. A tutor who hands you a count across the six categories after the first paper has told you more in one document than most arrangements produce in a term.

For a Repton student this is particularly worth doing before a sixth-form route decision. A student losing marks mainly to pacing and unwritten method will do better in a system with more components and more internal assessment; a student losing marks mainly to content gaps needs those closed whichever route they take. The count is a better input to that decision than a predicted grade, because a predicted grade compresses all six causes into one letter.

Using the mock cycle as a measurement instead of a verdict

Mocks arrive, a percentage is reported, the household reacts, and the information is thrown away. That is a waste of the single best measurement opportunity in the school year, because a mock is the only occasion on which a student sits a full paper under something close to real conditions with somebody else marking it. The reaction is understandable and the discard is not.

Start by reading the percentage correctly, which means not reading it as a grade. Grade boundaries are set by the board after each series has been marked, taking account of how the cohort and the paper performed, and are published afterwards. A mock graded against a previous series' boundaries is an estimate. A student two marks below a boundary is not two marks from a grade in any dependable sense, because the boundary will move. Treating a mock percentage as a verdict is therefore reading a number as something it is not.

What the mock actually provides is a script. Ask for it back, with the mark breakdown, and go through it for causes. That is a one-hour job and it produces the baseline for everything afterwards. It also lets you compare the school's marking with a tutor's, which is worth doing once: significant disagreement early is information, and discovering it in June is not.

The cycle then has a shape worth planning around. Pre-mock, the work is coverage and technique. The mock itself is the measurement. Post-mock is the most productive fortnight in the school year, because the evidence is fresh and specific and the student's attention is available. Families routinely spend that fortnight on recovery from the emotional reaction and start the useful work three weeks later, when the specificity has faded.

03

What a marked internal assessment draft tells you that a paper cannot

For a Repton student in the Diploma there is a second evidence stream that is cleaner than paper performance, and families underuse it. An internal assessment draft is untimed, criteria-marked and written over weeks, which means a weakness in it is not tangled up with pacing or exam nerves. If a draft scores in a low band on a published criterion, that is a direct statement about a specific skill, and it is actionable immediately.

In the Diploma sciences the investigation is capped at 3,000 words and marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. Those four names do most of the diagnostic work. A low research design mark is a planning failure that cannot be repaired once the data exists, which makes the planning conversation the highest-value single session available. A low data analysis mark is usually about uncertainty and processing. A low conclusion mark means a result was stated without being linked to the science. A low evaluation mark means limitations were listed without remedies.

The evidence of improvement here is unusually clean: a second draft scoring in a higher band on the same criterion, with the change visible in the text. That is a document a parent can read without any subject knowledge, because the criterion wording tells you what was being looked for and the two drafts show whether it appeared. Ask for both drafts and the criterion wording, not a summary of the feedback.

The authorship line matters more here than anywhere else, and should be stated before the work starts. A tutor may explain each criterion in the board's published wording, show how a comparable piece is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so the sentences become theirs. A page in this search result sells finished assessed work, and the consequence of that falls on the candidate.

04

Week by week: what should change, and when you would see it

An evidence-led arrangement should produce visible change on a known schedule, and the schedule differs by cause. Knowing it prevents both impatience and complacency: a parent who expects content gaps to close in a fortnight will panic unnecessarily, and a parent who waits a term for command-term discipline to improve has waited ten weeks too long.

The fastest movers are command-term discipline and unwritten method. Both are behaviours rather than knowledge, both are visible on the very next marked script, and both should show up within one to two weeks. If they have not moved after three, the tutor is not enforcing them on marked work, and that is a specific thing to raise rather than a vague dissatisfaction.

Retrieval failures take two to three weeks of frequent short testing. Misread questions take one to two weeks of deliberate slow reading. Pacing takes three to six weeks because stamina develops slowly and only through full papers to time. Content gaps are the slowest at two to four weeks per topic, which is also why a student with gaps across a syllabus eight weeks before a series cannot close them all and should be told so honestly rather than sold a plan that assumes otherwise.

The practical instruction is to ask, at the first review, which causes are expected to move first and by when. A tutor who gives you that forecast has committed to something checkable. One who says progress takes time has not, and the second answer is far more common than it should be in a market where nobody measures anything.

The sixth-form route decision, made on evidence rather than reputation

  • Read the Year 11 cause count, not just the predicted grades
  • Pacing and method losses favour a route with more internal assessment
  • Concentrated content gaps favour fewer subjects taken deeper
  • Missed deadlines are the strongest argument against the Diploma core

At a school offering more than one post-sixteen route, the choice gets made on conversation, sibling precedent and reputation. It can be made on evidence instead, and the evidence already exists in the Year 11 scripts. Confirm the current sixth-form provision with the school before planning around it, because offers change, but the reasoning below holds wherever a genuine choice exists.

The Diploma is six subjects, three Higher and three Standard, plus an Extended Essay of up to 4,000 words, a Theory of Knowledge course examined through an essay of up to 1,600 words and an exhibition commentary of up to 950, and CAS, which carries no points but blocks the diploma if incomplete. It is scored out of 45 with 24 as the minimum and up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix. A Levels are three or four subjects taken deeper with no core and limited coursework.

Now read the cause count against that. A student whose losses are mainly pacing and unwritten method does relatively better where more of the grade comes from untimed, criteria-marked internal assessment, which favours the Diploma. A student whose losses are content gaps in two subjects and nothing elsewhere does relatively better concentrating on three subjects, which favours A Levels. A student who misses deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing in a way that no amount of subject tutoring repairs, and that is the single strongest signal in either direction.

The mathematics decision sits inside the Diploma option and deserves separate attention. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation share component weightings and differ in content, and some university programmes expect one specifically. Check the prerequisites for the courses under consideration before the subject form is signed, because changing after the first term is disruptive.

06

What should not count as evidence, however sincerely reported

Four things get reported as progress that are not progress. They are usually reported honestly, they are often genuine precursors to improvement, and none of them is a mark. A parent who accepts them as evidence has no way of knowing whether the arrangement is working until results, which is precisely the position this page is written to avoid.

The first is improved confidence. Real, pleasant, and not measurable. The second is better engagement: the student now does the homework, attends willingly, asks questions. Also real, also not a grade. The third is a completed stack of past papers, which measures volume rather than performance unless each was sat to time and marked against the official scheme — and in most cases they were not, which is why forty papers can produce no movement at all. The fourth is a risen predicted grade, which is somebody's estimate against boundaries that will move.

The replacement for all four is the same and it is cheap. Marked work under timing, from two different weeks, with the lost marks counted by cause and the counts compared. If the count on a given cause has fallen, something happened. If it has not, something should change, and the change is not always the tutor: it may be the subject being prioritised, the frequency, the slot, or the remedy being applied to the wrong cause.

Ask for it monthly rather than termly. A term is long enough for an arrangement to drift entirely, and by the time a term-end report arrives the time remaining before the series has shrunk. Monthly reviews with two scripts catch both common failure modes early: the wrong content, and a slot that has quietly stopped working because the Dubai afternoon commute moved.

07

Materials, honesty and the position of this site

Specifications, subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge and Pearson. A provider distributing them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure as well. The correct practice is to reference and link so a parent reads the authoritative document. No grade-boundary figure appears on this page for that reason, and because a boundary quoted second-hand is a number that will eventually be wrong.

On assessed work the line is authorship and it is not a matter of degree. Teach the content, explain the criteria in the board's own wording, show how a comparable piece is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, teach them to fix it. Do not write the internal assessment, do not draft the Extended Essay, do not edit a piece to completion so the words become the tutor's. The caps are 4,000 words on the Extended Essay, 1,600 on the Theory of Knowledge essay, 950 on the exhibition commentary, 3,000 on the Diploma sciences investigation and 800 per Economics commentary.

There is also a UAE rule a Dubai parent should know before approaching a teacher privately. Private tutoring is regulated by permit: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service with a stated two working days to complete. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's school.

Finally, position. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge, the Sharjah Private Education Authority or the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It holds no such relationship, claims none, operates no premises in the UAE, has no arrangement with Repton School Dubai or any school named here, publishes no star rating and quotes no statistic without its source and date.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

The communities Repton families commute from, noted for the thing that affects an evidence-led arrangement: whether a timed paper can realistically be sat on a weekday evening.

Nad Al Sheba

Villa community on the school's doorstep, with the shortest journey of any on this list. A weekday evening timed paper is realistic here, which matters because a timed paper needs a student who is not already worn out by a commute.

Meydan

Adjacent and similarly quick, with afternoon congestion on the Al Khail approaches rather than distance as the constraint. Sessions at 17:00 are workable, and full timed papers are better placed at a weekend morning.

Dubai Hills Estate

A short drive but through one of the heavier afternoon corridors. Families here commonly settle on a 17:30 start for teaching sessions and reserve weekend mornings for anything timed.

Mirdif

Established family community with a longer run on the eastern side. Two school runs are common, which pushes the first usable hour past 17:00 and makes a weekday timed paper a poor measurement of ability.

Downtown and Business Bay

Apartment living with a reliable but busy commute. The constraint is a quiet space rather than travel time, which argues for a session before the household's busiest hour rather than after it.

Al Quoz

Mixed residential and industrial, close in distance with unpredictable traffic on the Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail approaches. A fixed online slot holds where an arrival time drifts.

Dubailand and Arjan

Further out along Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road with afternoon journeys that vary widely by day. Timed work belongs at the weekend for students travelling from here.

Al Rashidiya and Umm Ramool

Eastern communities with a cross-city run depending on the campus attended. The practical effect is a later start and a strong case for keeping full papers out of weekday evenings entirely.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the last script, not the last grade

The marked paper with the mark breakdown, from the most recent mock or internal assessment. A percentage tells you nothing actionable; a script can be read for causes in an hour. It is also what lets a tutor build a plan in session one rather than session four.

  2. 02

Send the subject, level or tier, and the syllabus code

For IGCSE the code from the entry confirmation, because Cambridge sciences carry a twenty per cent practical component and Pearson Edexcel sciences have no separate practical exam. For the Diploma, Higher or Standard and which mathematics course. Guessing costs the first two sessions.

  3. 03

Insist on a baseline count in the first fortnight

A full paper under genuine timing, marked against the official scheme, with every lost mark attributed to one of six causes and the counts written down. Ask for it in writing. Everything afterwards is measured against this document, and it cannot be reconstructed later.

  4. 04

Get a forecast of which causes move first

Ask at the first review which causes should move and by when. Command-term discipline and unwritten method inside two weeks; retrieval in three; pacing in four to six; content gaps two to four weeks per topic. A tutor who gives that forecast has committed to something checkable.

  5. 05

Review monthly with two scripts side by side

Not a report. Two marked pieces from different weeks, with the cause counts compared. If a count has fallen, something happened. If it has not after three weeks, raise it specifically rather than waiting for the end of term, by which point the remaining time has shrunk.

  6. 06

Protect the fortnight after a mock

It is the most productive two weeks in the school year, because the evidence is fresh and specific and the student's attention is available. Families routinely lose it to the reaction and start useful work three weeks later, when the specificity has gone and so has the attention.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Lost marks counted, not described

Six causes, each with a different remedy, and the instruction to revise more is correct for exactly one of them. A count across all six after the first paper tells a Repton family more than most tutoring arrangements produce in a whole term, and it takes one session to produce.

The mock treated as a measurement

A mock is the only occasion a student sits a full paper under near-real conditions with somebody else marking it. The percentage is an estimate against boundaries that will move; the script is the asset. Ask for it back with the mark breakdown and read it for causes.

Two evidence streams for Diploma students

Timed papers on one side, marked internal assessment drafts on the other. The draft is the cleaner early signal because it is untimed and criteria-marked, so a weakness shows up unmixed with pacing. A second draft in a higher band on the same criterion is readable by any parent.

A forecast you can check

Command-term and method losses should move in a fortnight; pacing takes four to six weeks; content gaps two to four weeks per topic. Publishing that schedule means a family can tell the difference between normal progress and an arrangement that has stalled.

The sixth-form choice read off the evidence

Pacing and method losses favour a route with more untimed internal assessment; concentrated content gaps favour fewer subjects taken deeper; missed deadlines are the strongest argument against the Diploma core. The Year 11 scripts already contain that information.

Nothing accepted as progress that is not a mark

Improved confidence, better engagement, a stack of completed papers and a risen prediction are all pleasant and none is evidence. The replacement is cheap: marked work under timing from two weeks, with the counts compared, reviewed monthly rather than termly.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What evidence should a Repton School Dubai family ask a tutor for?+

Two documents. A full paper sat under genuine exam timing, marked against the official scheme, with every lost mark attributed to one of six causes and the counts written down. Then a risk list built from it, updated monthly, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged and the marked work attached. That is the whole apparatus. It takes a tutor ten minutes a month to maintain if they are working from it, and cannot be produced at all if they are not.

What are the six causes of a lost mark?+

Content not known; content known but not recalled under pressure; question misread; command term misread; method correct but not written out; and time ran out. They have nothing in common as problems, and the instruction to revise more is the right remedy for only one of them. A tutor who hands you a count across all six after the first paper has told you more than most arrangements produce in a term, and it also tells you what not to spend hours on.

Does a tutor come to our home in Nad Al Sheba or Meydan?+

Not through IB Gram. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are not offered anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Dubai's in-home market is large and publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. For an evidence-led arrangement the online format adds a slot that is a start time rather than an arrival window, and work marked between sessions.

Why should I not read my child's mock percentage as a grade?+

Because grade boundaries are set by the board after each series has been marked, taking account of how the cohort and the paper performed, and published afterwards. A mock graded against a previous series' boundaries is an estimate, and a student two marks below a boundary is not two marks from a grade in any dependable sense. The useful output of a mock is the script and the distribution of lost marks by cause, which is stable information you can act on.

How quickly should I expect to see something change?+

It depends on the cause, which is why the count matters. Command-term discipline and unwritten method are behaviours and should move on the next marked script, within one to two weeks. Retrieval failures take two to three weeks of short frequent testing. Misread questions take one to two. Pacing takes four to six because stamina develops slowly. Content gaps are the slowest at two to four weeks per topic, which also sets a limit on what eight weeks can achieve.

What is the most productive fortnight in a Repton student's year?+

The two weeks immediately after a mock. The evidence is fresh and specific, the student's attention is briefly available, and the exact causes of lost marks are visible on a script somebody else marked. Families routinely spend that fortnight recovering from the emotional reaction to a percentage and begin the useful work three weeks later, when the specificity has faded and so has the willingness. Ask for the script back and go through it in the first week.

How do I use a marked internal assessment draft as evidence?+

Ask for both drafts and the criterion wording rather than a summary of the feedback. An internal assessment is untimed and criteria-marked, so a weakness shows up cleanly rather than tangled with pacing. In the Diploma sciences the investigation is capped at 3,000 words and marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. A second draft scoring in a higher band on the same criterion is readable without any subject knowledge.

Which internal assessment criterion cannot be fixed later?+

Research design, in the Diploma sciences investigation. It covers the research question, the controlled variables and whether enough data was planned, and once the practical work has been done it cannot be repaired. That makes the planning conversation before any data collection the highest-value single session available in the subject. The other three criteria — data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — carry eighteen of the twenty-four marks and can still be improved at drafting stage.

Can the Year 11 evidence help decide between the Diploma and A Levels?+

Yes, more usefully than reputation does. A student whose losses are mainly pacing and unwritten method tends to do better where more of the grade comes from untimed criteria-marked internal assessment. A student with concentrated content gaps in two subjects does better concentrating on three subjects taken deeper. A student who misses deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing in a way subject tutoring cannot fix, and that is the strongest single signal either way.

What should I refuse to accept as progress?+

Four things, however sincerely reported. Improved confidence. Better engagement. A stack of completed past papers, unless each was sat to time and marked against the official scheme. And a risen predicted grade, which is an estimate against boundaries that will move. All four are pleasant, often genuine precursors to improvement, and none is a mark. The replacement is two marked pieces from different weeks with the cause counts compared.

Does the syllabus code matter if my child is at a single school?+

Very much, because schools choose their board subject by subject. Cambridge science syllabuses carry a practical component worth twenty per cent, sat as a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper at the school's choice, while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam at all. A term of preparation for a component your child is not sitting is wasted, and the mistake is invisible until results. The exams officer can confirm the code in a sentence.

How many past papers should my child actually sit?+

Fewer than families imagine, used properly. One paper sat under genuine timing, marked against the official scheme and analysed for causes is worth more than five worked through casually, because the second method produces familiarity rather than improvement. In the final stretch the pattern that works is one full paper a week under timing, marked, with the counts compared against the previous week, and no new content at all in the last fortnight.

What if the tutor's marking disagrees with the school's?+

Find out why in week two rather than in June. Significant disagreement is information: it may mean the tutor is working from a different specification, applying a different mark scheme, or marking more or less generously than the examiner would. Any of those is worth resolving early, and the resolution is to compare the two markings against the official scheme for the same question. A tutor confident in their marking will welcome that comparison rather than deflect it.

Do tutors working with Dubai students need a permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service with a stated two working days to complete. Eligible applicants include school-registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule is published, so no amount is quoted.

Ask for the script, then ask for the count

For a Repton family the whole method is two requests. Ask the school for the last marked script with its mark breakdown rather than the last grade. Then ask any prospective tutor for a baseline count in the first fortnight: a full paper under genuine timing, marked against the official scheme, with every lost mark attributed to one of six causes. Get a forecast of which causes should move first and review monthly with two scripts side by side. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; nobody is sent to a Dubai address.
