IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The marks are in specific places, and the places are published

Nord Anglia International School Dubai runs the British curriculum through IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the sixth form, which means a family can hold two entirely different assessment systems in the same household and sometimes in the same child's five-year arc. Most tutoring conversations in that situation stay at the level of the subject: maths is hard, chemistry is going badly. That is not where the marks are. The marks are in components with published weightings, assessed against published criteria, and the loss points are specific enough to name.

This page names them. For every Diploma subject group, what the assessment actually rewards and how the weight is distributed. For the sciences, each paper and what it tests. For mathematics, the four distinct routes available across IGCSE and the Diploma and how they differ. For English and the languages, the components nobody rehearses and which are worth the most. And for IGCSE, the paper structure per subject with the board difference flagged, because Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel are not interchangeable.

The point of publishing all of it is that it converts a vague worry into a decision about where hours go. A component worth forty-four per cent and a component worth twenty deserve different amounts of attention. An untimed, criteria-marked component is usually the fastest place to gain marks because the criteria are published and there is no clock. Yet the conversation at home almost always starts from the topic a student dislikes rather than from the component carrying the most marks, and the hours follow the anxiety.

IB Gram supports Nord Anglia families with one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and that statement appears on every country page this site publishes. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. For a component-level problem the thing that matters is whether the tutor has taught that component, which is a narrower question than who will drive to Al Barsha South.

Two cautions before the detail. No IB session or results date appears anywhere here, because none could be verified from the International Baccalaureate's own site for this project; Diploma candidates in the UAE sit the May session and every specific date should come from the school. And the weightings quoted below were read from the current subject guides, but guides are revised, so treat them as a map of where the marks sit and confirm the governing version with your child's coordinator or exams officer. Everything else on this page is either a published weighting, a loss point that recurs across cohorts and is visible on a marked script, or a market rate read from a named source in October 2026. Where a figure could not be verified it has been left out rather than estimated into existence.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Two systems and the crossing between them. At a school running both, the crossing is easy to underestimate because the building does not change.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Eight or nine subjects assessed almost entirely by terminal written paper, with tiering into Core and Extended on Cambridge or Foundation and Higher on Pearson Edexcel. The sciences differ by board on practical assessment, which is the single most consequential administrative detail in the whole stage.

Get the syllabus code from the exams officer before arranging anything. Cambridge sciences carry a practical component worth twenty per cent, sat as a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper at the school's choice. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam at all; those skills are examined inside the theory papers.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum and up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix. Internal assessment carries weight in every subject.

The structural fact families miss is that the six groups are not assessed alike. A language acquisition course, a science and a mathematics course distribute their marks across completely different kinds of task, so the same amount of tutoring produces very different returns depending on which group it is spent in.

CROSSAges 16 · The summer between

Extended IGCSE into Higher Level

Not a uniform step up. Mathematics is the largest gap by a wide margin, the sciences are closer than students expect on content and further apart on expectation, and English is a change of subject rather than an increase in difficulty.

A six to ten session block in the summer, in the subject where the gap is largest, is the cheapest intervention available at this point. At a school offering both systems the crossing is invisible because nothing external changes, so it tends to be planned less carefully than by families who are also moving school.

A LEVELAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, where that route exists

Three or four subjects taken deeper with no compulsory core. Confirm the current sixth-form provision with the school, since offers change. Where a choice exists, the two routes distribute marks so differently that the decision is worth making on evidence rather than reputation.

The component structure is the honest basis for that choice. A student who performs better on untimed criteria-marked work than under a clock gains from a route with more internal assessment. A student who is sharply stronger in three subjects than in six gains from concentrating. Neither route is harder; they are differently shaped.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

Diploma subjects by group, with the weighting and the named loss point. The loss points are the specific ones that recur across cohorts, not general advice about revision.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent includes multiple choice and a data-analysis section; Paper 2 at forty-four is extended response; the investigation at twenty is capped at 3,000 words. Losses cluster on sign conventions, unlabelled force diagrams, and uncertainty not carried through a calculation.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Same component split. Higher Level separates from Standard on energetics and organic mechanisms. The most reliable recoverable marks are reaction conditions and definitions, which are recall items and close inside three weeks of short frequent testing.

Biology

HL and SL

Same split again, with the heaviest content load in the group. The largest single avoidable loss across the whole paper is answering describe where the question asked explain, which is a notation habit rather than a knowledge gap and is countable on a script.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level: Papers 1 and 2 at forty per cent each, Exploration at twenty. Higher Level: Papers 1 and 2 at thirty each, Paper 3 at twenty, Exploration at twenty. Paper 3 is an extended-response problem paper and the least practised component in the Diploma.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Identical weighting structure with modelling and statistics in place of the heavier pure content. Calculator technique is examinable in itself, and marks go to candidates who write the steps rather than reporting what the screen showed.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Standard Level: Paper 1 at thirty-five per cent, Paper 2 at thirty-five, Individual Oral at thirty. Higher Level adds the HL Essay at twenty and rebalances. Paper 1 losses come from identifying a technique instead of analysing its effect.

Language acquisition: French, Spanish, Arabic B and ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Assessed across receptive, productive and interactive skills, with an individual oral component that students rehearse least and which carries real weight. Placement in the wrong course or level is a common and fixable cause of apparent underperformance.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level: Paper 1 at thirty per cent, Paper 2 at forty, portfolio at thirty. Higher Level: 20, 30, 30 across three papers with the portfolio at twenty. Diagram marks are awarded individually and prose cannot recover a wrong diagram.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven with a pre-released case for the Higher Level paper, which can be worked on months ahead and usually is not. Ratio and break-even calculations are the most predictable marks on the paper and are most often lost to arithmetic.

Computer Science and Design Technology

HL and SL

Both pair theory papers with a substantial internal assessment where documentation is assessed alongside the product. Strong practitioners lose marks on documentation because the criteria reward evidence of a design process rather than a working outcome alone.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IGCSE side, with both boards' codes and the paper structure. Confirm which code your child's school entered before any tutoring is arranged, because the practical arrangement differs entirely between them.

Mathematics (0580 / 0980; Edexcel 4MA1)

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Cambridge splits the entry between a non-calculator and a calculator paper at half the grade each; Edexcel runs two calculator papers at fifty per cent apiece. Losses: bounds, algebraic fractions, vectors, and the final parts of structured questions where method must be written.

Physics (0625 / 0972; Edexcel 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Cambridge: multiple choice thirty per cent, theory fifty, practical component twenty. Edexcel: two written papers, no separate practical. Circuit behaviour under load is the largest predictable loss at Extended tier in either board.

Chemistry (0620 / 0971; Edexcel 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Two-step mole conversions, the exact wording of ion and gas tests, and ionic equations balanced for charge as well as atoms. Organic conditions are pure recall and are the fastest marks in the subject to recover.

Biology (0610 / 0970; Edexcel 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Water-potential and osmosis language, genetic crosses written out in full rather than in shorthand, and data handling on an unfamiliar graph. Content volume makes a topic-by-topic risk list more useful than a revision timetable.

English as a First Language (0500 / 0990; Edexcel 4EA1)

Core and Extended

Reading and writing rather than literature. Directed writing is assessed on register and audience as well as accuracy, and the summary question penalises phrasing lifted from the passage because the marks are for the student's own words.

Economics (0455 / 0987; Edexcel 4EC1)

Core and Extended

Diagram marks go individually for labelled axes, correct initial position, correct shift direction and the new equilibrium identified. Extended papers reward a judgement supported by the diagram rather than a two-sided list.

Computer Science (0478 / 0984; Edexcel 4CP0)

Core and Extended

Systems theory in one paper, algorithms and programming in the other. Pseudocode is marked on logic rather than syntax, which students find counterintuitive after a year of Python. Conversion work rewards drilling to automatic accuracy.

Geography and History (0460, 0470; Edexcel 4GE1, 4HI1)

Core and Extended

In geography, skills questions are the dependable marks and case studies decide the grade; a named example with figures scores where a generic one does not. In history, source questions reward provenance over content summary, which moves a candidate up a band without new facts.

French and Spanish (0520, 0530; Edexcel equivalents)

Core and Extended

Four skills assessed separately, which means a student can be strong overall and weak in one component carrying a quarter of the grade. Speaking is the least rehearsed and the most improvable in a short run of focused sessions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all online and one-to-one, chosen by which component is losing marks rather than by which subject is uncomfortable.

Component-targeted weekly sessions

One session a week aimed at a named component with a known weighting: Paper 2 in a science, Paper 3 at Higher Level mathematics, the Individual Oral, the pre-released business case. The target has a percentage attached, so the return on the hours is estimable rather than hoped for.

  • A named component chosen from the published weightings
  • A fixed weekday and hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set between sessions and marked against the official scheme

A loss-point run on the four big subjects

Six to eight sessions driven by the specific recurring loss points in mathematics and the sciences: sign conventions, two-step moles, command-term compliance, written method. Narrow, repetitive and unglamorous, and it produces the fastest measurable movement available.

  • Opens with a timed paper to establish which loss points apply
  • One named loss point per session, with a check at the end
  • Counts compared week to week rather than described

Internal assessment and oral component coaching

For the components that are untimed or rehearsable, where the criteria are published and the student has room to improve a draft. The work is the student's own throughout: a tutor explains criteria, reads what the student wrote and names the criterion it misses, and does not write the piece.

  • Criteria and word caps named before drafting begins
  • Oral components rehearsed against the published criteria
  • Two drafts compared on the same criterion in writing

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The six Diploma groups, and why they are not assessed alike

A Diploma student takes one subject from each of six groups, and families treat those six as six instances of the same thing. They are not. The groups distribute marks across fundamentally different kinds of task, which means an hour of tutoring buys a different amount of grade movement depending on where it is spent. Knowing the distribution is the single most useful planning fact available, and it is published.

In the sciences, roughly four-fifths of the grade comes from two written papers and one-fifth from an independent investigation that is untimed and criteria-marked. In mathematics the proportion is similar but the third Higher Level paper changes the shape. In language and literature a substantial slice comes from an oral component that can be rehearsed. In language acquisition the grade is split across receptive, productive and interactive skills, so a weakness in one skill can cost a quarter of a grade while the student appears broadly competent. In the individuals and societies group, extended-response writing carries almost everything, and evaluation is the band-deciding skill.

The planning consequence is straightforward once stated. The untimed, criteria-marked components are usually the fastest marks available, because the criteria tell you exactly what is wanted and there is no clock introducing a second variable. The rehearsable oral components are next, because rehearsal is a reliable technology. The timed written papers are slowest, because they combine content, technique and pacing, which have to be fixed separately.

That ranking is almost the opposite of how families allocate hours. The default is to pour time into the written paper of the subject the student finds hardest, which is the slowest-moving target in the slowest-moving category. Spending the first block on an internal assessment or an oral component in the same subject frequently produces more grade movement in less time, and it also builds the confidence that makes the paper work possible.

02

The sciences paper by paper, and what each one is testing

The Diploma sciences share one structure across Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and it is worth knowing in detail because it is where most Nord Anglia tutoring enquiries land. Paper 1 carries thirty-six per cent and contains both multiple-choice questions and a data-analysis section. Paper 2 carries forty-four per cent and is extended response. The scientific investigation carries twenty per cent, is capped at 3,000 words, and is marked out of twenty-four across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each.

Each of those tests something different. The multiple-choice section rewards elimination technique, which is a teachable skill in its own right and is almost never taught; a student who can reliably discard two plausible distractors converts guesses into marks across the whole section. The data-analysis section rewards practice on unfamiliar graphs rather than recall of familiar ones, which means revising notes does nothing for it. Paper 2 rewards command-term compliance and the ability to sustain a multi-step explanation.

The investigation is the component where a tutor adds the most value per hour and where the authorship boundary is tightest. Research design covers the question, the controlled variables and whether enough data was planned, and it cannot be repaired once the practical work has been done, which makes a single planning session before data collection the highest-value hour available in the subject. Data analysis is usually about uncertainty and processing rather than arithmetic. A weak conclusion states a result without linking it to the science. A weak evaluation lists limitations without proposing remedies.

A tutor may explain each of those criteria in the guide's published wording, show how a comparable investigation is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it. A tutor may not write the investigation, draft the evaluation, or edit a piece to completion so the sentences become theirs. The 3,000-word cap is a limit rather than a target, and a tightly written 2,200-word investigation routinely outscores a padded one at the cap.

Four mathematics routes, one decision

Across IGCSE and the Diploma a Nord Anglia student passes through up to four distinct mathematics routes, and families often do not realise these are different courses rather than different difficulty settings. At IGCSE, Cambridge offers 0580 at Core and Extended plus 0606 Additional Mathematics and 0607 International Mathematics, while Pearson Edexcel runs 4MA1 at Foundation and Higher tier. In the Diploma, Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are separate courses, each at Higher and Standard Level.

The consequential decisions are two. The first is the IGCSE tier, taken by the school in Year 10, usually on Year 9 evidence. A Cambridge Core entry is assessed on a narrower syllabus and cannot be awarded above grade C, which closes the Diploma Higher Level and A Level routes that require a B. That decision is easier to revisit in Year 10 than in Year 11, and what reopens it is evidence: Extended-only content taught, then a timed Extended paper marked against the official scheme.

The second is the Diploma course. Analysis and Approaches is heavier on pure content, with calculus and proof, and is the larger step from Extended IGCSE by a wide margin. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling and statistics, and demands written interpretation in context rather than a bare answer. The weighting structure is identical: two papers at forty per cent each plus the Exploration at twenty at Standard Level; three papers at thirty, thirty and twenty plus the Exploration at twenty at Higher Level. Some university programmes expect one course specifically, so check prerequisites before the subject form is signed.

0607 International Mathematics deserves a mention because schools feeding into the IB often prefer it and it carries an investigation paper that exists on no other maths syllabus. For a student heading towards the Diploma Exploration that is useful preparation. Across every one of these routes, one behaviour carries marks: writing the method out. A correct method with an arithmetic slip keeps most of its marks; a correct answer with no working loses marks the student had already earned.

English and the languages: the components nobody rehearses

Language subjects contain the most reliably recoverable marks in the Diploma and attract the least tutoring, because the problem does not present as a crisis. A student who writes fluently looks fine on a report and may be losing a third of a component to one specific habit. The habits are identifiable and the components are rehearsable, which is an unusual combination.

In English A: Language and Literature, Standard Level runs Paper 1 at thirty-five per cent, Paper 2 at thirty-five and the Individual Oral at thirty; Higher Level adds the HL Essay at twenty and rebalances the rest. Paper 1 is guided textual analysis, and the dominant loss is identifying a technique rather than analysing its effect on a reader. That is a sentence-level change, visible immediately in a script, and among the fastest improvements available anywhere in the Diploma.

The Individual Oral is the component families most overlook. It requires a global issue traced through two texts, it is worth thirty per cent at Standard Level, and it is rehearsable in a way that no written paper is. A student who has practised it four times with feedback performs differently from one who has thought about it, and the difference is worth more than most content revision. The HL Essay is similarly tractable because it is untimed and criteria-marked.

In language acquisition the grade divides across receptive, productive and interactive skills, which means a student can appear broadly competent while one skill carrying a quarter of the grade sits well below the others. Speaking is usually that skill, because it is the least practised in a classroom and the most uncomfortable to practise alone. It is also the most improvable in a short run of focused sessions. The first thing to check, though, is placement: being in the wrong course or phase is a common and entirely fixable cause of apparent underperformance.

05

IGCSE paper structure, with the board difference made explicit

At a school running the British curriculum through IGCSE, the board matters subject by subject and is not always announced at home. A school may enter Cambridge for the sciences and Pearson Edexcel for mathematics, or the reverse, and a student can sit two boards across one certificate set. The code is on the entry confirmation and the exams officer can give it in a sentence. It is the first question to settle, because the structural differences change the preparation entirely.

In the sciences the divergence is largest. Cambridge carries a practical component worth twenty per cent, sat either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper, with the school choosing which. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam; the same skills are examined inside two written papers. A term of alternative-to-practical preparation for a candidate not sitting that component is a term gone, and the mistake is invisible until results arrive.

The tiering language differs too. Cambridge splits into Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C. Pearson Edexcel splits mathematics into Foundation and Higher tier. These are not interchangeable in content or in difficulty profile, and a tutor who has only taught one will approximate the other. Grade reporting also varies: some Cambridge syllabuses report 9-1 and others A*-G depending on the version entered, and the two scales are not interchangeable on a university application.

On series, both boards run a November sitting alongside the main summer one, which makes a single-subject resit a matter of months rather than a year. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Work from the exams officer's copy and nothing else.

Where marks actually go in the four biggest subjects

  • Mathematics: bounds, algebraic fractions, vectors, written method, Paper 3 at HL
  • Physics: circuits under load, sign conventions, moments, quantity against unit
  • Chemistry: two-step moles, ion and gas tests, charge balance, organic conditions
  • Across all: command-term compliance and written method beat any single topic

Across cohorts the same loss points recur, because they are the places where a plausible wrong method produces a plausible wrong answer. A student sitting mathematics and three sciences typically has four to seven identifiable items carrying most of their lost marks, not a general weakness spread evenly. That is why a diagnostic paper is worth more than a revision plan: it converts an anxiety into a list with seven entries.

In mathematics, at both IGCSE and Diploma level, the recurring items are bounds and accuracy, algebraic fractions, vector geometry, the final parts of structured questions where method must be written, and at Higher Level the unpractised Paper 3. In Physics they are circuit behaviour under load, sign conventions in anything directional, moments where the pivot is not where the student assumes, and the difference between a quantity and its unit. In Chemistry they are two-step mole conversions, the exact wording of ion and gas tests, charge-balanced ionic equations and organic reaction conditions.

In Biology the largest single item is not a topic at all. It is command-term compliance: answering describe where the paper asked explain, which costs marks on answers that are entirely true. The same fault appears across every extended-response subject and it is the fastest of all the loss points to fix, usually inside two weeks, because it is a reading and writing habit rather than a knowledge gap.

Two items on that list are worth more than any individual topic and are almost never taught. The first is written method, which earns marks across every structured question in mathematics and the quantitative sciences. The second is multiple-choice elimination on the boards and papers that use it, where thirty per cent or more of a grade sits. Ranking loss points by marks at stake rather than by discomfort usually puts both near the top, and surprises families who expected the hardest topic to matter most.

07

Materials, authorship and the position of this site

Subject guides, specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge and Pearson. A provider distributing them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure as well. Reference and link so that a parent reads the authoritative document. No grade-boundary figure appears on this page for that reason, and because a boundary quoted second-hand will eventually be wrong.

On assessed work the line is authorship. A tutor may teach content, explain each criterion in the board's published wording, show how a comparable piece is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become theirs. The caps are 4,000 words on the Extended Essay, 1,600 on the Theory of Knowledge essay, 950 on the exhibition commentary, 3,000 on the sciences investigation and 800 per Economics commentary.

A page in this search result sells completed internal assessment work at a fixed price. Submitting work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice under the board's rules and the finding lands on the student, not the seller. A useful test for anybody offering coursework help is to ask what they would do if your child requested one written paragraph. A refusal with a description of the alternative is the right answer; treating it as negotiable tells you what happens the week before a deadline.

And position. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge, the Sharjah Private Education Authority or the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It holds no such relationship, claims none, operates no premises in the UAE, has no arrangement with any school named on this page, publishes no star rating and quotes no statistic without its source and date.

08

Putting it to work: choosing the component to attack first

With the weightings in front of you the planning takes ten minutes. List the components of the subject in question with their percentages. Mark which are timed and which are not. Mark which are rehearsable. Then ask where the student's marks are currently going, which requires a marked script rather than an impression, and pick the intersection of high weighting and fast movement.

In a science that intersection is usually the investigation, because it is twenty per cent, untimed, criteria-marked, and a single planning session before data collection can change the research design mark that cannot be repaired later. In language and literature it is usually the oral component, worth thirty per cent at Standard Level and rehearsable. In mathematics it is written method, which is worth marks across every paper and costs one habit change. In business management it is the pre-released case, which can be worked months ahead.

What it is almost never is the hardest topic in the hardest paper, which is where families instinctively start. That target is slow-moving, combines three variables, and frequently absorbs a whole term for a modest return. Attacking it second, after a faster component has produced visible movement, works better for an additional reason that has nothing to do with marks: the student now believes the arrangement does something, and belief changes how they spend the hours between sessions.

Then measure. Ask for a marked piece from two different weeks, with the loss points counted and compared. If a count has fallen, something happened. If nothing has moved after three weeks on a fast-moving target like command-term compliance or written method, the remedy is not being enforced on marked work, and that is a specific conversation rather than a vague dissatisfaction.

Villa communities a short drive away, with the Sheikh Zayed and Umm Suqeim approaches as the variable. Sessions at 17:00 work on most days and a fixed slot absorbs the variation.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Triangle

Dense apartment communities with a large school-age population and heavy peak queuing. The usable window is narrow, so a fixed online slot is worth more here than almost anywhere else nearby.

Dubai Hills Estate

A short drive on the Al Khail side with a noticeable afternoon peak. Families here commonly settle on 17:30 for teaching and keep weekend mornings for anything written or timed.

Arjan, Dubai Science Park and Dubailand

Further out along Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road with journeys that vary widely by day. Timed work belongs at the weekend for students travelling from here rather than after a variable commute.

Motor City and Sports City

Established family communities with two school runs common, pushing the household's earliest usable hour past 17:00. Session length matters less than the slot being reliable week to week.

Dubai Marina and JLT

A longer commute at peak than the map implies. Students from here are realistically available from 18:00 on a weekday, which argues for shorter recall-based sessions midweek.

Discovery Gardens and Al Furjan

Apartment and villa mix on the southern side, with the Sheikh Zayed run as the constraint. Reliable rather than fast, which suits a fixed slot and a weekend morning for writing work.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha South and the Al Barsha communities

A dense mix of curricula inside a few kilometres, which is why families here compare IB and British pathways more often than most. Students we support in this area sit IGCSE, A Level and the IB Diploma, and some cross between them mid-stream.

  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School

The JVC, Dubai Hills and Dubailand ring

The next ring of commuting, sharing the same afternoon peak on the Al Khail and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed corridors. Dubai private schools are licensed by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which oversees the quality of private education in the emirate.

  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Safa British School
  • Arcadia Global School
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Schools are named only as context for the Dubai education system. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school named here, no school listed is a client, and no inspection rating for any of them is stated or implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the component list with its weightings

For a Diploma subject, from the coordinator or the subject guide. For IGCSE, the syllabus code from the exams officer, which determines the papers and whether a practical exam exists. Ten minutes of asking replaces two sessions of discovery and prevents the most expensive mismatch available.

  2. 02

Ask for a marked script, not a predicted grade

A prediction compresses every cause into one letter. A script shows where the marks went. The most recent mock or internal assessment with its mark breakdown is enough to identify which component is carrying the losses, which is what the plan should target.

  3. 03

Pick high weighting crossed with fast movement

Usually the untimed criteria-marked component or a rehearsable oral, not the hardest topic in the hardest paper. The hardest topic is slow-moving and combines content, technique and pacing, which have to be fixed separately and rarely are inside one term.

  4. 04

Test the tutor on the component, not the subject

Ask what Paper 1 contains besides multiple choice, or which investigation criterion cannot be repaired after data collection, or what the Individual Oral requires. A specialist answers in a sentence. An answer about teaching philosophy is itself the information you needed.

  5. 05

Free trial lesson in the slot you intend to keep

The real weekday and hour, not a convenient demonstration time, because a Dubai afternoon commute is the actual constraint on whether an arrangement survives a term. Listen for whether the tutor asks which board or which level before teaching anything.

  6. 06

Compare counts monthly, not percentages termly

Two marked pieces from different weeks with the loss points counted and compared. Command-term compliance and written method should move inside a fortnight. If a fast-moving target has not moved in three weeks, the remedy is not being enforced on marked work.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Weightings published, not described

Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent, Paper 2 at forty-four, the investigation at twenty. Those numbers decide where hours should go, and most families have never been shown them. A component worth double another deserves double the attention, which sounds obvious and almost never happens.

Loss points named, subject by subject

Two-step mole conversions, circuit behaviour under load, bounds and algebraic fractions, command-term compliance. Marked scripts usually show four to seven items carrying most of the losses, and the same ones recur across cohorts because of how the questions are built.

The fastest component identified first

Untimed criteria-marked work and rehearsable orals move faster than timed papers, because they involve one variable rather than three. Starting there produces visible movement, which also changes how a student spends the hours between sessions.

Four mathematics routes separated

Core, Extended, International Mathematics, then Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation at two levels. These are different courses, not difficulty settings, and the IGCSE tier decision can close a Diploma route two years before the student reaches it.

The board difference flagged before it costs a term

Cambridge sciences carry a practical component worth twenty per cent; Pearson Edexcel sciences have no separate practical exam. A term spent preparing a component your child is not sitting is invisible until results, and the syllabus code prevents it in one question.

Only sourced numbers, and the absences stated

No IB examination date, because none could be verified from the organisation's own site. No grade boundary figure, because boundaries move and belong to the boards. No accreditation claim, no school arrangement, no UAE premises, no star rating.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does Paper 1 contain in the IB sciences at Nord Anglia Dubai?+

Both multiple-choice questions and a data-analysis section, together worth thirty-six per cent of the subject grade, with Paper 2 at forty-four per cent and the investigation at twenty. The two sections of Paper 1 test different things: the multiple-choice part rewards breadth of recall plus elimination technique, and the data-analysis part rewards practice on unfamiliar graphs rather than revision of familiar ones. Confirm the current structure with your child's coordinator, since subject guides are periodically revised.

Which IB component gives the fastest grade movement?+

Usually the untimed, criteria-marked one, because the criteria state exactly what is wanted and there is no clock adding a second variable. In the sciences that is the investigation at twenty per cent; in language and literature it is the Individual Oral at thirty per cent at Standard Level, which is rehearsable in a way no written paper is. Families instinctively start with the hardest topic in the hardest paper, which is the slowest-moving target available.

Does a tutor visit homes in Al Barsha South?+

Not through IB Gram. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are not offered anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. For a component-level problem the relevant question is whether the tutor has taught that component, which is narrower than who will drive to the school's catchment.

What is the difference between IB Maths Analysis and Applications?+

They are separate courses sharing an identical weighting structure. Analysis and Approaches is heavier on pure content, with calculus and examinable proof, and is the larger step from Extended IGCSE by a wide margin. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling and statistics and requires written interpretation in context rather than a bare answer. Some university programmes expect one specifically, so check the prerequisites for the courses under consideration before the subject form is signed.

Why does Paper 3 at Higher Level mathematics cause trouble?+

Because it is an extended-response problem paper worth twenty per cent, it does not resemble Papers 1 and 2, and schools generally reach it last in the teaching sequence. The result is that it is the least practised component in the Diploma while carrying a fifth of the grade. A Higher Level student who has never sat it under timed conditions is carrying avoidable risk, and it should be drilled separately and early rather than in the final fortnight.

How do I find out which IGCSE board my child's subjects are entered on?+

Ask the exams officer for the syllabus code on the entry confirmation. Cambridge codes are four digits such as 0580 or 0625; Pearson Edexcel codes look like 4MA1 or 4PH1. Schools choose board by board, so Cambridge sciences and Edexcel mathematics in the same certificate set is normal. The code determines the papers, the tiering language and whether a separate practical exam exists, which makes it the first question before any tutoring is arranged.

Does my child sit a practical exam for IGCSE science?+

It depends entirely on the board. Cambridge science syllabuses carry a practical component worth twenty per cent of the grade, taken either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the school chooses which. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam; practical understanding is examined inside the written papers instead. Those are genuinely different preparations, so confirm the component before arranging any tutoring around it.

Which investigation criterion is the most urgent to get right?+

Research design, because it is the only one of the four that cannot be repaired once the data has been collected. It covers the research question, the controlled variables and whether enough data was planned. That makes a single planning session before any practical work the highest-value hour available in the subject. The other three criteria — data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — carry eighteen of the twenty-four marks and can still be improved at drafting stage.

Why is the Individual Oral worth tutoring?+

Because it carries thirty per cent of English A: Language and Literature at Standard Level, it requires a global issue traced through two texts, and it is rehearsable in a way that written papers are not. A student who has practised it four times with feedback against the published criteria performs differently from one who has only thought about it. Rehearsal is a reliable technology, which makes this one of the most dependable returns on tutoring hours in the whole Diploma.

My child writes fluently but loses marks on Paper 1. Why?+

Almost always because they are identifying techniques rather than analysing their effect on a reader. Naming a metaphor is not analysis; saying what it does to the reader's understanding is. That is a sentence-level change, visible immediately in a script, and among the fastest improvements available anywhere in the Diploma. Paper 1 carries thirty-five per cent at both levels, so the return on fixing one habit is disproportionate to the effort involved.

What should I check first in a language acquisition subject?+

Placement, before anything else. The grade divides across receptive, productive and interactive skills, so a student can look broadly competent while one skill carrying a quarter of the grade sits well below the others. Being in the wrong course or phase is a common and entirely fixable cause of apparent underperformance. After placement, speaking is usually the weakest and the most improvable, because it is least practised in class and most uncomfortable to practise alone.

Which loss points are worth more than any single topic?+

Two. Written method, which earns marks across every structured question in mathematics and the quantitative sciences, so an unwritten method loses marks the student had already earned. And multiple-choice elimination on the boards and papers that use it, where thirty per cent or more of a grade can sit. Ranking loss points by marks at stake rather than by how uncomfortable they feel usually puts both near the top, which surprises most families.

Can one tutor cover a Diploma science and a Diploma language?+

Rarely well. The component structures differ completely: one is two timed papers plus an independent investigation, the other is written papers plus a rehearsable oral assessed on different criteria. A tutor strong in one is approximating in the other, and the session that suffers is whichever they are less current in. Two specialists on two evenings generally costs the same and works better, with one asked to keep sight of the overall deadline calendar.

How soon should a component-targeted plan show something?+

It depends on the target. Command-term compliance and written method are behaviours and should move on the next marked script, inside one to two weeks. Rehearsable oral components improve visibly across three or four rehearsals. An investigation criterion moves between drafts, so a second draft in a higher band is the evidence. Timed paper performance is slowest at four to six weeks, because pacing and stamina develop only through full papers under timing.

List the components, then pick the one worth attacking

For a Nord Anglia family the planning is short once the numbers are visible. Get the component list with its weightings from the coordinator, or the syllabus code from the exams officer. Ask for the last marked script rather than the last prediction. Pick the component where high weighting meets fast movement, which is usually untimed criteria-marked work or a rehearsable oral rather than the hardest topic in the hardest paper. Then test the tutor on that component specifically. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; nobody is sent to a Dubai address.
