IB IGCSE Tutor for Gems Modern Academy Students in Dubai

Searching for an IB IGCSE tutor for Gems Modern Academy students in Dubai usually means one of two moments: a Class X or XII board year, or a crossing from CBSE into the IB Diploma. The second is the one nobody prepares for, because the content overlaps and the assessment does not. This page maps that gap subject by subject. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The content carries across; the assessment does not

GEMS Modern Academy at Nad Al Sheba runs the Indian curriculum with the International Baccalaureate Diploma available in the senior years, which puts a particular crossing in front of a lot of households here. A student completes Class X on a system built around terminal board examinations marked out of a hundred per subject, and then enters a programme where twenty to thirty per cent of every subject grade is produced away from the examination hall, against published criteria, over several months. The content overlaps substantially. Almost nothing else does.

That mismatch is the most under-supported moment in an Indian-curriculum household's school career, and it is widespread: Dubai had 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, with the Indian curriculum accounting for twenty-six per cent of enrolment, second only to the UK curriculum at thirty-seven. A large number of families make this crossing every year, and the advice available to them is mostly about prestige rather than about what actually changes.

What changes is specific and listable. Six subjects instead of four or five, across six prescribed groups rather than a chosen stream. An internal assessment in every subject, which is independent research rather than a prescribed practical. A core consisting of an Extended Essay of up to 4,000 words, a Theory of Knowledge course examined through an essay of up to 1,600 words and an exhibition commentary of up to 950, and CAS, which carries no points but blocks the diploma if incomplete. And command terms that specify what an answer must do, with mark schemes built around that specification.

A CBSE-trained student arrives with genuine strengths for this. The content load in Class XII sciences and mathematics is heavy, the computational fluency is usually strong, and the habit of sustained preparation for a terminal examination transfers directly to the Diploma papers. What is missing is independent research design, writing against criteria rather than for a model answer, and the project-management capacity that a 4,000-word essay and three internal assessments demand simultaneously.

IB Gram supports families at this school with one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India, and that position appears on every country page this site publishes. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, read in October 2026. No IB session or results date appears here, because none could be verified from the organisation's own site; take every date from the school. The same caution applies to the weightings and criteria quoted below, which were read from the current subject guides: guides get revised, and your child's coordinator holds the version that governs their cohort, so treat the figures here as a map of where the marks sit rather than as the authority for them.

IX-XAges 13-16 · Classes IX-X

CBSE Classes IX and X

Culminating in Class X board examinations, with internal assessment forming a defined portion of the mark in several subjects and the rest coming from terminal papers marked out of a hundred. Mathematics is offered at more than one level, and that choice has consequences for the stream available afterwards.

The decision at the end of Class X is the real one: stream for Class XI and XII, or cross into the Diploma. Families often treat it as a single question when it is two, because a student can be well suited to the Diploma's structure and poorly suited to carrying six subjects, or the reverse. Both deserve asking separately.

XI-XIIAges 16-18 · Classes XI-XII

CBSE Classes XI and XII

A chosen stream of four or five subjects, with Class XII board examinations marked out of a hundred per subject and practical components in the sciences. Aggregate percentage is the headline figure most admissions processes read, which concentrates the pressure on a single examination season.

The tutoring pattern here is intensive and content-led, because the assessment is content-led. That is a genuinely different job from Diploma support, and a tutor experienced in one does not automatically transfer. Ask any prospective tutor which system they have actually taught, and for how long, before matching.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum and up to three bonus points from the core matrix. Internal assessment carries real weight in every subject.

For a CBSE-trained student the papers are the familiar part and the internal assessment is not. The first term of support should therefore be weighted towards research design, criteria and project management rather than towards content, which is the opposite of what most families expect to buy.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, where a student crosses to a British school

Terminal written papers with tiering into Core and Extended on Cambridge or Foundation and Higher on Pearson Edexcel, and a board-dependent practical arrangement in the sciences. Closer to CBSE in shape than the Diploma is, but with different tiering and different practical assessment.

A CBSE student moving to IGCSE finds the assessment logic familiar and the administration unfamiliar. Establish the syllabus code immediately, because Cambridge sciences carry a practical component worth twenty per cent while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam at all, and tiering decides the grade ceiling before teaching starts.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, each subject with the specific thing that changes between CBSE and the Diploma. The content overlap is usually large; the note names what is genuinely new.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

A CBSE-trained student usually arrives with strong computational fluency and less practice at written justification. Standard Level is two papers at forty per cent each plus the Exploration at twenty; Higher Level adds Paper 3 at twenty, an extended-response problem paper unlike anything in a board examination.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Same weighting structure, with modelling and statistics in place of the heavier pure content. The new demand is written interpretation in context: an answer that states a number without saying what it means in the situation scores below its potential.

Physics

HL and SL

Content overlap with Class XII physics is substantial. What is new is uncertainty handling, unfamiliar graph analysis in the Paper 1 data section, and an independent investigation capped at 3,000 words rather than a prescribed practical with a known method.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Again heavy overlap, with energetics and organic mechanisms as the Higher Level separators. The investigation is the genuine novelty: the student designs it, which is a research skill no board practical requires because the method is given.

Biology

HL and SL

The content load is comparable to Class XII and the command-term discipline is tighter. A student used to writing everything they know about a topic loses marks in the Diploma for answering a different question from the one asked, which is a habit rather than a gap.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level Paper 1 at thirty per cent, Paper 2 at forty, portfolio at thirty; Higher Level adds a third paper and reduces the portfolio to twenty. The portfolio is three commentaries of no more than 800 words each on real published articles, which has no CBSE equivalent.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with a pre-released case for the Higher Level paper that can be worked months in advance. The shift from a content-recall examination to applying a concept to a specific described business is the adjustment that takes longest.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Standard Level Paper 1 at thirty-five per cent, Paper 2 at thirty-five, Individual Oral at thirty; Higher Level adds the HL Essay at twenty. The oral component is new to most CBSE students and is rehearsable, which makes it good value per hour.

Hindi and other language options

HL, SL, B and ab initio

Language group placement matters more than families expect, because a language studied as a first language and the same language studied as an acquisition course are different qualifications with different ceilings. Ask the coordinator which placement is proposed and on what basis.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A solution-development internal assessment where documentation is assessed alongside the working product. Students with strong programming from a CBSE background routinely lose marks on documentation, because the criteria reward evidence of a design process rather than code that runs.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all online and one-to-one. The first is the one a crossing household should consider before the others, and it is the one least often bought.

A crossing block over the summer

Six to ten sessions between Class X and the start of the Diploma, spent on what the new system assumes rather than on content. Research design, writing against criteria rather than for a model answer, and the project-management habit a 4,000-word essay requires. Finishing before term starts rather than running alongside it.

  • Targeted at the assessment shift, not at subject coverage
  • One subject chosen as the worked example, then generalised
  • Finishes before the first Diploma term begins

Weekly single-subject support

One session a week in one subject at one level, aligned to the school's scheme of work. For a CBSE student in Class XI or XII this is content-led and intensive; for a Diploma student it should be component-led, aimed at a named part of the grade with a published weighting.

  • A fixed weekday and hour on Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next one
  • A written risk list by topic or component, reviewed monthly

Internal assessment and core process coaching

For the Diploma's internal assessments, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, where the work is the student's own throughout. The tutor explains criteria in the board's wording, reads what the student has written, and names which criterion it misses. A tutor does not write the internal assessment or draft the Extended Essay.

  • Research question narrowed to what the sources support
  • Word caps checked before drafting rather than after
  • Feedback on the student's own text, never a rewrite

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The CBSE to Diploma gap, subject by subject

One competitor in this market has a single subheading on curriculum transition. Nobody publishes a structured subject-by-subject version, which is odd given that the Indian curriculum accounts for twenty-six per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment. The gap is not a general increase in difficulty, and in several subjects the CBSE content is heavier. It is a specific set of things the Diploma assumes a student can already do, and the set differs by subject.

In mathematics the computational fluency transfers well and the written justification does not. CBSE rewards a correct method and a correct answer; the Diploma also rewards explaining why the method applies, and at Higher Level the third paper asks for sustained reasoning across an extended problem. A student who has drilled hundreds of questions arrives fast and accurate and loses marks on the parts that ask for an argument rather than a result.

In the sciences the content overlap with Class XII is substantial and the investigation is genuinely new. A CBSE practical has a prescribed method; a Diploma investigation requires the student to design one, and research design is one of four criteria carrying six marks each out of twenty-four, with the whole piece capped at 3,000 words. It is also the only one of the four that cannot be repaired once data has been collected, which makes a planning conversation before any practical work the highest-value single session in the subject.

In the humanities and in English the shift is from content recall to argument and analysis. A Diploma extended-response answer rewards a judgement supported by evidence; an answer that covers the topic comprehensively without reaching a position scores in a lower band. And across every subject there are command terms, a small closed vocabulary specifying what an answer must do, with mark schemes built around that specification. That is the cheapest thing to fix and the thing nobody teaches explicitly.

02

What each system actually rewards

Set the two side by side and the difference stops being about reputation. CBSE Class XII concentrates the grade in terminal board examinations marked out of a hundred per subject, with practical components in the sciences, and the headline figure most admissions processes read is an aggregate percentage. That rewards comprehensive content coverage, computational accuracy, and the ability to sustain preparation across a single intense examination season.

The Diploma distributes the grade. Each of six subjects produces a grade from one to seven, built from timed papers plus an internal assessment worth typically twenty to thirty per cent, and the total out of 45 includes up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix. That rewards breadth, deadline management across two years, and the ability to write against published criteria. It also forgives a weak patch in a way a single examination season does not, and punishes a disorganised autumn in a way CBSE does not.

There is a further structural difference worth naming. CBSE allows a chosen stream of four or five subjects, so a student can concentrate on what they are good at. The Diploma requires one subject from each of six groups by design, which means a student who is sharply uneven carries their weakest area for two years. For some students that breadth is valuable and for others it is a standing tax, and the honest comparison depends on which kind of student yours is rather than on which qualification sounds better.

Neither system is harder. They are differently shaped, and the shape suits different students. A student who struggles with deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing in a way that no amount of subject tutoring repairs. A student who performs poorly under single-season examination pressure will find the Diploma's distributed assessment a relief. That is the comparison to make, and the evidence for it already exists in how your child handled Class IX and X.

03

Mathematics: from CBSE into one of four Diploma courses

This is the decision that most affects a crossing student and the one most often made without information. CBSE offers mathematics at more than one level at Class X, and the Diploma offers two distinct courses — Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretation — each at Higher and Standard Level, which makes four destinations from one starting point. They are different courses rather than difficulty settings, and some university programmes specify one of the two.

A CBSE-trained student typically arrives with an advantage in pure technique. Algebraic manipulation, trigonometric identities and calculus procedures are drilled more thoroughly in a CBSE Class XI and XII sequence than in most systems, which means Analysis and Approaches content is often less alarming than it looks. The difficulty appears in two places: proof, which is examinable in the Diploma in a way it is not in a board examination, and the extended-response problem paper at Higher Level, which asks for sustained reasoning rather than the application of a known method.

Applications and Interpretation is not the easier route and should not be chosen as one. It emphasises modelling and statistics, and it requires written interpretation in context: an answer that produces a number without saying what the number means in the situation described scores below its potential. For a student who is strong computationally and weak at written explanation, Applications can be the harder of the two, which is the opposite of the usual assumption.

The decision should be made on university prerequisites read from those universities' own pages, not from any tutoring site including this one. Prerequisites change, they vary by institution and country, and some engineering and mathematics programmes name a specific course and level. Check before the subject form is signed, because changing after the first term is disruptive and at some schools not possible.

The internal assessment habit nobody has needed yet

  • Research design cannot be repaired after the data has been collected
  • The commonest failure is a question too broad for the available data
  • One planning session is worth more than several drafting sessions
  • Word caps: 3,000 for the investigation, 4,000 for the Extended Essay, 800 per commentary

A CBSE practical has a method. The student follows it, records results, and writes up against a known format. A Diploma internal assessment has a criterion list and nothing else: in the sciences the student chooses a research question, designs the investigation, controls the variables, collects enough data, analyses it with uncertainties carried through, concludes against the scientific context and evaluates with realistic improvements proposed. The piece is capped at 3,000 words and marked out of twenty-four, six marks for each of research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation.

That is a research skill rather than a study skill, and it is the single largest novelty in the crossing. The most common failure is not laziness or weak science. It is a research question too broad to be answered with the data that can realistically be collected in the available time, which is a planning error made in week one and discovered at the first draft. Because research design cannot be repaired after the data exists, that error is terminal for six of the twenty-four marks.

The same pattern repeats across the other internal assessments. The mathematics Exploration needs a question of appropriate scope. The Economics portfolio needs three commentaries of no more than 800 words each on real published articles, each tightly focused. The Extended Essay at 4,000 words needs a question the available sources can actually support. In every case the highest-value intervention is one session at the planning stage, and in every case families buy support at the drafting stage instead.

What legitimate help looks like is narrow and should be stated before work begins. A tutor may explain each criterion in the board's published wording, help turn a broad question into a researchable one, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become theirs. A page in this search result sells completed internal assessment work; submitting work that is not the candidate's own is malpractice and the finding lands on the student.

05

Command terms, and the fastest marks in the crossing

Every Diploma subject guide publishes a list of command terms with definitions, and every paper uses them deliberately. State, outline, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss, justify and compare each specify what an answer must do, and the mark scheme is built around that specification rather than around the topic. An answer that is entirely true but addresses the wrong command scores a fraction of the marks available.

This is where a CBSE-trained student loses most avoidable marks in their first Diploma year, and the reason is structural rather than a failing. A board examination rewards comprehensive coverage: writing everything relevant about a topic is a sensible strategy when the marking rewards content. In the Diploma that strategy loses marks, because an examiner marking an explain question is looking for a mechanism and will not award credit for a description however thorough.

It is also the fastest thing to fix in the entire crossing. An hour spent sorting past-paper questions by command term, writing only the first sentence of each answer, and comparing those sentences against the mark scheme moves more marks than an hour of new content at almost any point in the two years. Two or three sessions on it usually produces visible change on the next marked script, which makes it the sensible first target rather than an afterthought.

The test to apply to any prospective tutor is short. Ask what the difference is between describe and explain in your child's subject, and what it is worth. Somebody who has taught the Diploma answers with an example from a paper in under a minute. Somebody whose experience is content-led will answer in the abstract, which tells you they will teach material where the marks are being lost on question analysis.

06

Languages and the group structure

The Diploma's six-group requirement produces one decision that Indian-curriculum families regularly get wrong, and it concerns languages. Group one is studies in language and literature, taken as a first language. Group two is language acquisition, with ab initio for a genuine beginner, B at Standard Level for a working speaker and B at Higher Level for someone approaching fluency. A language studied as a first language and the same language studied as an acquisition course are different qualifications with different ceilings and different work.

The error that costs most is placing a student with real home fluency into an acquisition course a level or two below their ability. It produces a comfortable grade, teaches almost nothing, and consumes a sixth of the Diploma for two years. The opposite error, placing a partial speaker at Higher Level B, produces two years of unnecessary difficulty. Both are avoidable with a short assessment and a conversation with the coordinator before the subject form is returned.

There is also a UAE requirement running underneath all of this that affects the week rather than the Diploma grade. Private schools in the emirate must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies alongside whichever curriculum they are licensed for, with classes organised separately for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes strictly prohibited because the expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit.

One rule limits what a tutor can honestly offer in those subjects. For the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, which means tutoring works from the school's own material rather than from a parallel scheme. Anyone selling a separate curriculum for Arabic or Islamic Education is describing something the regulations do not permit.

07

Deciding at the end of Class X, on evidence

The decision at the end of Class X is really two questions, and treating it as one is where households go wrong. The first is whether the Diploma's structure suits the student: six subjects across six prescribed groups, internal assessment in every one, a core with deadlines spread across two years, and a score assembled rather than earned in a single season. The second is whether the student's academic profile suits it: are they broadly capable, or sharply stronger in two or three areas?

A student who is broadly strong and reasonably organised does well in the Diploma, and the breadth is a genuine benefit rather than a tax. A student who is sharply uneven carries their weakest group for two years, and a chosen CBSE stream lets them avoid that entirely. A student who misses deadlines will find the Diploma core punishing regardless of ability, because CAS carries no points but blocks the diploma if incomplete, and the Extended Essay and internal assessments are internally deadlined in clusters.

The evidence for all of that already exists in how Classes IX and X went, and it is more useful than any comparison of the two qualifications' reputations. Did the student keep on top of work set over weeks, or produce it the night before? Did they handle the internal assessment components of Class X subjects or only the terminal papers? Were their marks even across subjects or concentrated? Those three answers predict the Diploma experience better than a percentage does.

Where a short block of tutoring genuinely helps is in making that comparison concrete: two or three sessions walking through the actual courses under consideration with somebody who has taught inside both systems, built from the student's own record rather than from general advice. It is an unusual purchase and frequently the best-value tutoring a crossing household ever buys, because it operates on a decision that shapes two years rather than a topic that shapes a term.

08

Materials, authorship and the position of this site

Subject guides, specifications, past papers, mark schemes, board question papers and grade-boundary tables belong to the bodies that publish them. A provider distributing them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure as well. Reference and link so that a parent reads the authoritative document. Everything factual on this page about weightings, criteria and caps should be confirmed against the current guide through the school.

On assessed work the line is authorship and it is not a matter of degree. A tutor may teach content, explain each criterion in the board's published wording, show how a comparable piece is built, read a draft the student has written and name which criterion it misses, and teach them to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the internal assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become theirs. A useful test is to ask what they would do if your child requested one written paragraph; a refusal with an explanation is the right answer.

On permits, the cost is zero, which removes an excuse. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service with a stated two working days to complete. Eligible applicants include school-registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

And position. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge, the Sharjah Private Education Authority or the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It holds no such relationship, claims none, operates no premises in the UAE, has no arrangement with any school named on this page, and makes no claim about any university's admissions decisions.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Communities in this catchment, noted for the variable that actually governs a study week here: when a student is at a desk, and whether a long session is viable midweek.

Nad Al Sheba

Villa community on the school's doorstep, with the shortest journey in the catchment. A 16:30 start is realistic, which makes a full-length session midweek a sensible plan rather than an optimistic one.

Meydan and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Adjacent communities with congestion on the Al Khail approaches rather than distance as the constraint. Teaching sessions from 17:00 work; anything requiring sustained writing belongs at a weekend morning.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Established family communities on the eastern side with a longer afternoon. Two school runs are common, which pushes the household's earliest usable hour past 17:00 and compresses the usable evening.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

South-eastern communities on the Al Ain road corridor with a longer and more variable run. A fixed online slot holds where an arrival time drifts week to week.

Al Quoz and Al Barsha

Mid-city communities reached on the Al Khail and Sheikh Zayed corridors. Reliable rather than fast, which suits a protected weekly slot and a weekend morning for drafting.

Dubai Hills Estate

A short drive through one of the heavier afternoon corridors. Families here commonly settle on 17:30 for teaching and reserve weekend mornings for internal assessment work and timed papers.

International City and Warsan

Dense residential communities with heavy local congestion. Session reliability matters more than session length, because a late start costs the end of the hour where next week's work is set.

Downtown and Business Bay

Apartment living with a dependable but busy commute. The constraint is usually a quiet study space rather than travel, which argues for a session before the household's busiest hour.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask which system the tutor has actually taught

CBSE Class XII support is content-led and intensive; Diploma support is component-led and criteria-based. Experience in one does not transfer automatically. For crossing work specifically, ask for somebody who has taught inside both, and ask how long ago rather than only whether.

  2. 02

Treat the Class X decision as two questions

Does the Diploma's structure suit the student, and does their academic profile suit six subjects across six groups? A broadly capable, organised student benefits from the breadth. A sharply uneven one carries their weakest group for two years, which a chosen stream avoids entirely.

  3. 03

Read the evidence from Classes IX and X

Did work set over weeks get done across those weeks or the night before? Did the internal assessment components of Class X subjects go as well as the terminal papers? Were marks even or concentrated? Those three answers predict the Diploma experience better than an aggregate percentage.

  4. 04

Check mathematics prerequisites before the subject form

Four destinations exist from one CBSE start, and some university programmes name a specific Diploma mathematics course and level. Read the requirements on those universities' own pages rather than on any tutoring site, because changing after the first term is disruptive and sometimes not possible.

  5. 05

Buy the crossing block before term, not during it

Six to ten sessions over the summer on research design, writing against criteria and project management, with one subject as the worked example. A student who arrives having already met the new assessment language starts slightly ahead rather than catching up from week three.

  6. 06

Spend the first Diploma session on command terms

Sorting past-paper questions by command term and writing only the first sentence of each answer moves more marks than an hour of new content. For a student trained to cover a topic comprehensively, this is the single fastest correction available and it shows on the next marked script.

One competitor has a single subheading on transition and nobody publishes a structured version, despite the Indian curriculum being twenty-six per cent of Dubai enrolment.

What each system rewards, set side by side

CBSE concentrates the grade in a single examination season and permits a chosen stream. The Diploma distributes it across six subjects with internal assessment and a core. Neither is harder; the shape suits different students, and the evidence is already in Classes IX and X.

Four mathematics destinations, not two

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at two levels, and Applications is not the easier route. A student strong computationally and weak at written explanation can find it the harder of the two, which is the reverse of the usual assumption.

Research design flagged before the data exists

It carries six of the investigation's twenty-four marks and is the only criterion that cannot be repaired once the practical work is done. The usual failure is a question too broad for the available data, made in week one and discovered at the first draft.

Command terms taught as the first correction

A board examination rewards comprehensive coverage; a Diploma paper rewards answering the specific command. That makes writing everything relevant an actively losing strategy, and correcting it is the fastest mark movement available in the whole crossing.

No admissions claims and no unsourced figures

University prerequisites belong on universities' own pages. No IB examination date appears, because none could be verified from the organisation's own site. No regulator or board accreditation, no school arrangement, no UAE premises, and no fine amount the ministry never published.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How big is the jump from CBSE Class X into the IB Diploma?+

Larger in assessment than in content, and the content is sometimes heavier on the CBSE side. What changes is six subjects across six prescribed groups instead of a chosen stream, an internal assessment worth twenty to thirty per cent in every subject, a core consisting of the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, and command terms that specify what an answer must do. A CBSE-trained student arrives strong on content and preparation stamina and short on independent research design.

Does a tutor come to homes in Nad Al Sheba?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service that exists only in India. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Dubai's in-home market publishes roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, read in October 2026. For crossing work the useful person is somebody who has taught inside both systems, which has nothing to do with distance.

Why does a CBSE student lose marks on IB papers despite knowing the content?+

Because command terms specify what an answer must do and the mark scheme is built around that specification. A board examination rewards comprehensive coverage, so writing everything relevant about a topic is a sensible strategy there. In the Diploma an examiner marking an explain question is looking for a mechanism and will not credit a description however thorough. Correcting that is the fastest mark movement in the entire crossing and usually shows on the next marked script.

What is the IB internal assessment, compared with a CBSE practical?+

A CBSE practical has a prescribed method to follow and write up. A Diploma investigation has only a criterion list: the student chooses the research question, designs the investigation, controls variables, collects enough data, analyses it with uncertainties carried through, concludes against the science and evaluates with realistic improvements. It is capped at 3,000 words and marked out of twenty-four, with research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation each carrying six marks. That is a research skill, not a study skill.

Which IB mathematics course suits a CBSE-trained student?+

It depends on the degree they are aiming at, and the prerequisites should be read on those universities' own pages. CBSE students usually arrive strong in algebraic technique, which makes Analysis and Approaches content less alarming than expected, with proof and the Higher Level extended-response paper as the real gaps. Applications and Interpretation is not the easier option: it requires written interpretation in context, and a student strong computationally but weak at explanation can find it harder.

When should a crossing block be taken?+

Over the summer between Class X and the start of the Diploma, finishing before term begins rather than running alongside it. Six to ten sessions on research design, writing against criteria rather than for a model answer, and the project-management habit a 4,000-word essay demands, with one subject as the worked example. A student who arrives already familiar with the new assessment language starts slightly ahead instead of catching up from week three.

Which internal assessment criterion is most urgent to get right?+

Research design, because it is the only one of the four that cannot be repaired once the data has been collected. It covers the research question, the controlled variables and whether enough data was planned, and it carries six of the investigation's twenty-four marks. The usual failure is a question too broad to be answered with the data realistically collectable in the time available, made in week one and discovered at the first draft.

Should my child stay on CBSE or move to the IB Diploma after Class X?+

Ask two questions rather than one. Does the structure suit them: six subjects across six groups, internal assessment in every one, and a core deadlined across two years? And does their profile suit it: are they broadly capable or sharply stronger in two or three areas? A chosen CBSE stream lets an uneven student avoid their weakest area entirely. A student who misses deadlines finds the Diploma core punishing regardless of ability.

What evidence should the Class X decision be based on?+

How Classes IX and X actually went, rather than the aggregate percentage. Did work set over several weeks get done across those weeks, or the night before? Did the internal assessment components of Class X subjects go as well as the terminal papers? Were marks even across subjects or concentrated in two or three? Those three answers predict the Diploma experience better than any percentage, and they are all already available to you.

Can my child take Hindi in the IB Diploma?+

Language options vary by school, so confirm what is offered with the coordinator. The important distinction is between group one, where a language is studied as a first language, and group two language acquisition, where ab initio is for a genuine beginner, B at Standard Level for a working speaker and B at Higher Level for someone approaching fluency. The same language studied in those two ways is a different qualification with a different ceiling, so placement deserves a short assessment before the form.

What happens to Arabic and Islamic Education lessons alongside the Diploma?+

They continue, because private schools in the emirate must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies alongside whichever curriculum they are licensed for. Classes must be organised separately for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. Tutoring in those subjects must work from the school's own material, because additional content without ministry permission is prohibited.

Is Diploma tutoring the same job as CBSE Class XII tutoring?+

No, and conflating the two is a common and costly mistake. CBSE Class XII support is content-led and intensive, because the assessment is content-led and concentrated in one season. Diploma support should be component-led, aimed at a named part of the grade with a published weighting, and much of it is criteria-based rather than content-based. Ask any prospective tutor which system they have taught and how recently, before matching rather than afterwards.

How much does a tutor cost for a family at this school?+

Published market rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, a named specialist at roughly AED 200 to 450 or more, in-home visits including travel at roughly AED 180 to 500, and budget platforms between AED 45 and 150. Monthly estimates for one weekly hour run roughly AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range. Those belong to the providers that published them; ours follows the free trial lesson and depends on subject, level and frequency.

What should the first Diploma term's tutoring concentrate on?+

Not content, which is the opposite of what most crossing families expect to buy. Command terms first, because a student trained to cover a topic comprehensively is using an actively losing strategy and correcting it shows on the next script. Then research design, before any internal assessment data is collected, because that criterion cannot be repaired afterwards. Then the core deadline calendar, which the school sets and which arrives in clusters rather than evenly.

Map the crossing, then book one trial lesson

For a family at this school the useful first step depends on which moment you are in. In a board year, name the subject and the class and expect content-led intensive work. At the Class X crossing, ask the two separate questions — does the Diploma's structure suit this student, and does their profile suit six subjects — and read the answer off how Classes IX and X actually went rather than off a percentage. Then check mathematics prerequisites on the universities' own pages before the subject form. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; nobody is sent to a Dubai address.
