Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 Home Tutor in Dubai

Looking for a Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 home tutor in Dubai is a reasonable thing to type, and this page answers it on the arithmetic rather than with a pitch. What an in-home visit costs in this city once the drive is counted, which extras appear after the first invoice, how one tutor can hold all three sciences for a single-award course, and why IB Gram delivers this as one-to-one live video instead. Dirham figures throughout, each attributed to a published source.

The arithmetic behind a home-tutor search

An in-home tutor is the default mental picture for most families and it is a legitimate service. Somebody arrives, sits with your child for an hour or two, and leaves. You supervise nothing, there is no screen to police, and a teenager who will put their head down for a visitor does not always do the same for a laptop. For a younger child those advantages are real and worth paying for, and plenty of Dubai families do exactly that.

The reason this page starts with arithmetic rather than with that picture is that the published numbers tell a story families rarely see laid out. In-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai runs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, with Bestimate's rate table at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. Online one-to-one with a qualified subject tutor runs AED 150 to 300, with Unitors advertising IGCSE support from AED 150. Monthly packages make the gap starker: AED 799 a month for eight online sessions works out near AED 100 a session, while AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions works out near AED 200 an hour. All of those figures were read in October 2026 and belong to the providers who published them, not to us.

The difference is not profiteering. It is travel. Somebody has to pay for the drive, and in a city where a weekday evening run between two communities can take forty minutes each way, that cost is either inside the hourly rate, inside a minimum booking length, or inside the quality of tutor who is willing to accept the booking at all. The last of those three is the one that costs a 0653 family most, because it quietly narrows the search from tutors who know the syllabus to tutors who live nearby.

IB Gram delivers tutoring for families in Dubai and across the Emirates one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not make home visits in Dubai or in any other emirate; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and no sentence on this page will suggest otherwise. The case for that is not that screens are better than people. It is that for a single-award science course, the binding constraint is finding one tutor who is genuinely comfortable moving between osmosis, mole calculations and circuit diagrams inside the same hour, and that person is rarely the nearest available option.

What follows is the practical detail. The travel arithmetic by community. The extras that appear on a second invoice. What the 0653 syllabus asks a single tutor to hold. The four ways of buying an hour in this city compared on teaching time rather than headline rate. The permit and invoicing position. And what to agree before you need to cancel, pause or change tutor, because those conversations go better when the terms were set in week one.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Where a student sits in the sequence changes both the hours required and the sensible format. These are the four stages a Dubai family planning combined-science support is usually choosing between.

Y7-9Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower secondary science before options

Science is still taught as one subject by one teacher, often a specialist in only one of the three strands. The habits that decide a combined-science grade form here: whether a student writes units on an answer, whether they can rearrange a simple relationship, whether they read a graph or guess at it. Support at this stage is cheap and preventative.

This is also when the Dubai options conversation happens, and it is the point at which a family can still influence whether a child is put on the single award, the double award or three separate sciences. Ask the head of science what the school's criteria are for each route before the form arrives.

COREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653, Core tier

The Core entry covers the core content of all three sciences with a lower grade ceiling than the Extended entry. Support here is mostly content coverage and confidence, and it is the cheapest version of 0653 to tutor because the body of material is narrower and the paper technique less demanding.

In Dubai the Core entry is frequently used for students carrying a heavy timetable including mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education streams. Confirm the tier from the statement of entry rather than assuming, because the grade ceiling it sets affects sixth-form applications.

EXTAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653, Extended tier

Extended candidates sit different papers and carry supplement content on top of the core material across all three sciences. A wider body of material for one tutor to hold, which is why Extended support needs either longer sessions or a short specialist block on whichever strand the marked paper shows as weakest.

Extended 0653 is the common entry where a Dubai school expects students to progress to sixth form but has judged three separate sciences too heavy. It is the version where a family most often ends up paying for a second tutor for a limited period.

RESITAges 16+ · Post Year 11

November series retake

Cambridge runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, so a student who misses a required grade in June can sit again in November. A retake plan is short, intensive and entirely paper-technique led, built around the specific components where marks were lost rather than a fresh pass through the syllabus.

Worth knowing before results day, because the November entry has its own deadline and the summer is the only available preparation window. A Dubai family travelling in July and August should plan continuity before they leave rather than after they return.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A single-award science course asks one tutor to be credible across a wide range. These are the codes we are asked about, described from the point of view of what a tutor has to be able to do rather than what the syllabus says.

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653)

Core and Extended, single award

One grade, three sciences. A tutor needs to move from a food-web question to a reacting-mass calculation to a series-circuit problem without losing the thread, and to know which of the three the student is actually losing marks in. Test that in a trial lesson rather than assuming it.

Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences (0654)

Core and Extended, double award

The same three sciences with more content and two grades. A tutor comfortable with 0653 is usually comfortable here, but the volume means the weekly session has to be longer or the plan has to be more selective about what gets covered.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

Recall-heavy and the strand most 0653 students feel safest in. A tutor who allows a student to spend the hour on biology because it feels productive is being pleasant rather than useful.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

The strand that most often forces a family to buy a second, specialist tutor for a few weeks. Moles, relative formula mass, reacting masses and concentration are maths problems wearing chemistry clothes, and they take several sessions to rebuild before any marks move.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

Formula selection, unit conversion and graph interpretation under time pressure. The marks are volatile rather than missing: students who can do these calmly at home lose them in a timed paper until the method is reflexive, which needs short repeated drilling.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Science (Double Award, 4SD0)

Single tier

Used by some Dubai centres instead of the Cambridge route. Different papers, different practical arrangements and a different series calendar, so a tutor must confirm the board from the statement of entry before preparing anything.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

The subject hiding inside most combined-science losses. Rearranging relationships, converting units, handling ratio and reading values off a graph are all maths, and a student who cannot do them loses the same science marks in every paper.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510)

Core and Extended

Long-answer science marks are awarded for precise wording. A second-language writer can hold the science and still miss the credited term, which is visible on a marked script and cheaper to fix than more content teaching.

A Level and IB Diploma sciences

AS, A2, HL and SL

Where the single-award decision shows its cost. Post-16 science entry conditions are set school by school in Dubai, and some sixth forms ask for a separate-science grade for a given subject. Confirm in writing while the options form is still open.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of running 0653 support, all of them one-to-one over live video and all of them priced on teaching time rather than on time booked.

One weekly hour, one tutor, all three strands

The standard arrangement for a single-award course and the cheapest effective one. The tutor holds the whole syllabus, sets priority across the three sciences from one marked paper, and keeps a single record of what has moved. One session to schedule, one invoice to check, no handover between specialists.

  • Priority set across all three sciences from one diagnostic
  • One record of progress rather than three partial ones
  • Easiest cadence to protect through a busy school term

Twice weekly through the exam term

From February to a June series, two shorter sessions usually beat one long one. The physics and chemistry calculation work in particular responds to short frequent repetition rather than to a single heavy hour, and a weekday evening after school is a poor time for a full-length paper.

  • Weekday session for teaching and repair
  • Weekend morning session for full-length timed papers
  • Practical component protected as its own strand

Short specialist block on one strand

For the common case where chemistry arithmetic or physics formula work is dramatically weaker than the rest. A specialist takes four to six sessions on that strand alone, writes a handover note, and the main tutor resumes the cheaper single-tutor arrangement afterwards.

  • Fixed session count agreed before the block begins
  • Written handover so the main plan continues
  • Reverts to one tutor once the strand is rebuilt

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The home-tutor question for 0653, answered without a pitch

Taken literally, a Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 home tutor in Dubai is a person who travels to your address and teaches at your table. That market exists and the published rate for it is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel. What you are buying at the upper end of that band is partly teaching and partly logistics taken off your hands, and for some households that is the right purchase. It is worth saying so plainly rather than arguing against a service a lot of families are happy with.

IB Gram does not provide it. Tutoring for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video, and home visits are a service we run only in India. That is a fixed position across every country page on this site rather than a policy invented for this one, and it means no sentence here will promise anyone arriving at a Dubai address.

The argument for making that trade is specific to a single-award science course. 0653 produces one grade from biology, chemistry and physics, so the tutor you want is one person who can hold all three credibly. That is a narrower population than it sounds. Most science tutors are specialists in one strand who are serviceable in a second and vague in the third, and the strand they are vaguest in is usually the one carrying your child's lost marks. Searching within driving distance of your community makes an already narrow search narrower.

There is a second, duller argument that matters more over a year. A video session starts when the student sits down. An in-home session starts when the tutor arrives, which in this city is a variable rather than a time. Over thirty weeks the difference between a lesson that reliably begins at half past five and one that often begins at six is several hours of teaching, which is worth more than the hourly saving most families are shopping for.

02

What travel actually costs in a Dubai in-home booking

The published in-home band is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel. What that phrase conceals is that the travel is paid for in one of three currencies, and only the first is visible on an invoice. It can be billed, usually as a surcharge or a longer minimum booking. It can be absorbed by the tutor, in which case they will accept only bookings near where they already are. Or it can be absorbed by your child, in the form of a session that starts twenty minutes late and finishes on time.

The table below works through the arithmetic in the way a family never does. It takes an indicative evening drive each way, as families in these communities report it, and shows what a nominally reasonable hourly rate becomes once the tutor's travel is counted as part of the hour you are paying for. The point is not that in-home tutoring is bad value. It is that the comparison most parents make, between a quoted in-home rate and a quoted online rate, is not comparing the same thing.

The second effect is less obvious and more damaging. A tutor who has to drive will take the booking that fits their route, which means the available slots in a given community cluster together and the tutors available are the ones already working nearby. If your child needs the chemistry arithmetic rebuilt and the nearest willing tutor is a biologist, the geography has made a teaching decision for you. That is the mechanism by which a lower hourly rate ends up costing a term.

None of this applies to a two-hour weekend booking in a community where the tutor lives, which is the one case where in-home arithmetic looks good. If that is your situation and you have found a person who genuinely knows 0653 at your child's tier, the format is not the thing to change.

The extras that appear after the first invoice

  • Minimum booking length, commonly two hours for an in-home visit
  • Travel surcharge outside a stated radius
  • Different rates for weekends and late-evening slots
  • Charges for the first diagnostic session
  • Materials fees, where board syllabuses and past papers are free to download
  • Cancellation notice, and what covers illness or a school trip

Hourly rates are the part of tutoring families compare and the part that varies least. The variation is in everything around the hour, and most of it is invisible until the second month. It is worth asking about all of it before the first session rather than discovering it in an awkward message.

The commonest extras are structural. A minimum booking length, usually two hours for an in-home visit, which turns a reasonable hourly rate into a fixed evening commitment. A travel surcharge for communities outside a stated radius. A different rate for weekends or for sessions after a certain hour, which is exactly when a Year 11 student in Dubai is available. A charge for the first diagnostic session, which is reasonable in itself but should be stated. Materials or workbook fees, which deserve a question about what is being supplied, since examination board syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes are published free on the board's own website and may not lawfully be sold on to you as a bundle.

Then the cancellation terms, which cause more friction than anything else. Twenty-four hours notice is the usual standard, and the question worth asking is what happens in the specific situations a family actually meets: a child off sick, a school trip announced at short notice, a family trip over a long weekend, an exam timetable that was published after the block was booked. None of these are unusual and all of them are cheaper to agree in advance.

Finally, the word free. If a trial is advertised as free, the conditions attached to it belong in the same place as the word: how long the session is, whether card details are required, whether it obliges you to anything. The trial lesson offered here is one full-length one-to-one video session, at no charge, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue, and that is the whole of the condition.

04

What one tutor has to hold in their head for 0653

The financial case for a single tutor only works if the tutor is genuinely credible across the whole award, so it is worth being concrete about what that means. Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 draws material from biology, chemistry and physics and awards one grade. It is tiered, with Core and Extended candidates sitting different papers, and the assessment follows the familiar Cambridge science pattern of a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component. Check the current syllabus and the component details on the Cambridge International website, and check the paper numbers and the practical choice on your child's statement of entry, because centres make the practical decision themselves.

In a single hour a 0653 tutor may need to explain why water moves across a membrane, then calculate the mass of a product from a balanced equation, then work out the current through a resistor. Those are three different kinds of thinking. The biology is recall organised into mechanism. The chemistry is proportional reasoning with units attached. The physics is formula selection followed by arithmetic under pressure. A tutor who is strong in one and weak in another will unconsciously steer the hour towards their own comfort, and the student will let them, because the alternative is harder.

This is testable in about four minutes and it is the single most useful thing to do with a trial lesson. Ask for a mole calculation worked aloud. Then ask for an explanation of why a food chain rarely has more than four or five links. Then ask for a worked example on series and parallel resistance. Fluency on all three is what you are buying. Hesitation on one is not disqualifying, but it tells you where a short specialist block may be needed later.

The other half of holding the course is knowing where the loss is. One grade averages three sciences, so a marked paper broken down by strand is the only honest basis for a plan. Without it, a tutor is guessing, and the guess is usually that the student needs more of whatever the tutor teaches best.

05

Four ways to buy the same hour in Dubai

Comparing formats on headline rate is how families end up disappointed. The useful comparison is hours of teaching received per hour paid for, and whether the teaching reaches the thing that is actually wrong. The table sets out the four options available in this city on both measures.

The group row deserves a note, because it is the option families dismiss too quickly and also the option that fails most often for 0653 specifically. Group classes are genuinely cheaper, at AED 45 to 150 per student at the budget end on published rates. They are set by year group rather than by tier, and in a combined-science class the students in the room are losing marks in different sciences. A group works for content coverage and does not work for a specific arithmetic weakness in the chemistry strand.

The centre row is a different kind of thing altogether. A tuition operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a licensed business, needing a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. The fee reflects that overhead and the premises. IB Gram holds no such permit and operates no premises in the UAE, which is why a centre is not a format we offer rather than a format we criticise.

The last column is the one to read first. For a 0653 student the question is whether the hour can be aimed at the specific strand carrying the loss, and only one-to-one formats can do that. Everything else in the table is a judgement about how much that precision is worth to your household this term.

Permits, invoices and the admin of paying a tutor in the UAE

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated and most families do not know it. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount can honestly be quoted, and anyone quoting one to you is improvising.

The official route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, the website and the e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days. Because the permit costs nothing and takes two days, there is no reasonable excuse for a tutor charging commercial rates not to hold one, and no basis for charging a premium because they do.

One further rule is worth knowing if the tutor you are considering teaches at your child's own school. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document, so verify it against the current ADEK publication before relying on it, but the direction of travel is clear enough that marketing a child's own teacher privately is not something to arrange.

On invoicing, two practical points. Ask whether a quoted figure includes VAT, in writing, because an exclusive quote changes the comparison you believed you were making; we will not state the VAT treatment of tuition fees here, as that needs a Federal Tax Authority citation rather than an assumption. And keep a record of what was paid for what, particularly with an informal in-home arrangement, because there is no other paperwork in the relationship if something goes wrong.

07

Scheduling a 0653 session into a Dubai evening

The limiting factor on a weekday lesson is almost never the tutor's diary. It is the gap between a school's final bell and a fifteen-year-old being fed, settled and capable of thinking about reacting masses. Dubai school days finish early, but bus routes serving several communities can take an hour, and a parent collecting from a Jumeirah school to a southern community at half past three is making a journey nobody can time.

The pattern that works for most Dubai families is one weekday session between 17:00 and 19:00 for teaching and repair, and one weekend morning session for anything requiring full-length timing. A ninety-minute paper attempted at eight in the evening after a full school day produces a score that is not a fair baseline, which means the diagnostic you are paying for is wrong. Saturday mornings consistently produce the most useful scripts, and for an exam-term cadence two shorter sessions beat one long one for the calculation-heavy strands.

Ramadan changes the shape and should. School timetables compress, less new content is taught, and the month is better spent on retrieval, command-word technique and short papers than on starting mole calculations from scratch. Families who prefer it move sessions to post-iftar slots. We would not schedule a Year 11 science lesson in the pre-dawn hours even if asked.

One scheduling fact sits outside anyone's control. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after working from the wrong one. If you are planning travel near the exam period, work from your school's own timetable rather than a generic one found online, and tell your tutor the dates so the final sessions are scheduled around the actual papers.

08

Cancelling, pausing and what to agree before you need it

Most of what goes wrong in a tutoring arrangement is administrative rather than academic, and all of it is cheaper to settle in week one. The table below lists the situations Dubai families actually meet, what is worth agreeing before each one happens, and what no provider can honestly promise about any of them.

The hardest case is the one at the bottom. A tutor can be competent, prepared and perfectly pleasant, and a particular fifteen-year-old can still refuse to engage with them. That is not a failure of either party and it is not fixed by persistence. It is fixed by changing the match, quickly and without a negotiation, which is why the arrangement here is that you say so and we change it rather than asking you to justify the request.

The second hardest is the plan that is not working despite the sessions happening. The protection against that is measurement rather than goodwill: a baseline paper, a plan with dates, and a second comparable paper six weeks later marked the same way. If the score has not moved, buying more hours of the same plan will not move the third paper either. That conversation is ours to start, and starting it is the only honest use of the evidence file.

What is not on offer, from us or from anybody who is being straight with you, is a grade guarantee or a refund tied to an outcome. Nobody controls the paper, the marking or a sixteen-year-old's morning. A provider who offers that is either not honouring it or pricing it in, and in either case it is a reason for scepticism rather than reassurance.

Where we tutor

What travel does to a booking, by Dubai community

The in-home premium in Dubai is a geography problem rather than a pricing policy. These are the communities we hear from most for combined science, with the local pattern that shapes what a visiting tutor can realistically offer.

Mirdif

Dense school cluster across several curricula, so the local tutoring supply is reasonable and in-home travel is short. The gap between in-home and online rates narrows here more than almost anywhere, which makes it the one area where the format choice is genuinely about preference.

Al Qusais and Muhaisnah

Large resident populations with schools nearby and heavy evening traffic on the main arteries. Families report in-home tutors arriving later than agreed often enough that fixed start times become a negotiating point rather than a given.

Nad Al Sheba

Spacious villa community where every journey is long in every direction. In-home quotes here carry the clearest travel premium in the city, and two-hour minimum bookings are common because a single hour does not justify the drive.

Damac Hills and Mudon

Newer family communities on the southern edge with growing school provision. The local pool of tutors who know a specific syllabus code at Extended tier is thin, so families here have historically chosen between proximity and expertise.

The Greens and The Views

Central apartment living with short journeys to the Barsha and Al Khail schools. Travel costs are modest, but apartment acoustics are a real constraint: a focused hour needs a door that closes more than it needs a particular format.

Barsha Heights

Well positioned between the western school clusters, which keeps in-home travel costs low. The supply is mostly general science tutors rather than tier specialists, so the question to ask is which syllabus code they have taught through a full series.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Townhouse community with students bussed out in several directions. Return times vary by route rather than by distance, so a fixed weekday slot before 17:00 is unreliable and weekend mornings carry the full-length paper work better.

Dubai Festival City and Ras Al Khor

Schools close by but awkward approach roads at peak times. Families here consistently prefer a format that does not depend on a tutor completing a journey, particularly for the twice-weekly cadence that an exam term needs.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Decide what you are really buying

If the requirement is supervision and logistics taken off your hands, an in-home arrangement may genuinely suit you better, and the published Dubai band for that is AED 180 to 500 an hour. If the requirement is a tutor who knows 0653 at your child's tier, the geography stops helping. Worth being honest about which it is.

  2. 02

Get the tier and the board from the entry

Core or Extended, Cambridge 0653 or a Pearson equivalent, and which practical component. Extended covers a wider body of material, so any quote given before the tier is known is a guess. The exams officer at your child's school can confirm all three in one email.

  3. 03

Free trial, and test all three strands in it

One full-length one-to-one video session at no charge, with no card details taken. Use four minutes of it to ask for a mole calculation, a food-chain explanation and a resistance problem, back to back. Fluency across all three is the thing that makes a single tutor cheaper than three.

  4. 04

Settle the admin before the second session

Session length, rate, whether VAT is included, minimum bookings, cancellation notice, what covers illness and school trips, and how a change of tutor is requested. Ten minutes in week one, and it removes almost every argument this arrangement is capable of producing.

  5. 05

Measure at six weeks, then decide again

A second paper of the same format under the same timing, marked the same way, with the strand breakdown repeated. The comparison is the review. If nothing has moved, the plan or the tutor changes rather than the hours increasing, and that is a conversation we start rather than wait for.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The in-home arithmetic is published, not hidden

Dubai in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel on published figures, and this page works through what that becomes per hour of actual teaching. Most pages in this market publish no price at all. Knowing the real comparison is useful whether or not you book anything here.

One tutor for the whole single award

0653 gives one grade across three sciences, so one tutor who is credible in all three is both cheaper and clearer than a rota of specialists. That claim is testable in a trial lesson by asking for a worked example from each strand, and it should be tested rather than taken on trust.

Sessions start when your child sits down

No journey at either end means a 17:30 slot begins at 17:30. Across a thirty-week commitment the difference between reliable start times and optimistic ones is worth several full sessions, which is more than most families save by shopping on hourly rate.

The admin is agreed in week one

Minimum bookings, cancellation notice, what covers illness and a late-published exam timetable, how to change tutor. All of it settled before it is needed, because the friction in tutoring arrangements is almost always administrative rather than academic.

No approvals claimed, no outcomes promised

IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation, no KHDA Educational Services Permit and no UAE premises, and is not affiliated with any school named here. There is no grade guarantee and no refund tied to a result, because nobody controls the paper or the marking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Will you send a tutor to our home in Dubai for Combined Science 0653?+

No. IB Gram delivers tutoring for UAE families one-to-one over live video, and home visits are a service we run only in India. That is consistent across every country page on this site rather than a position taken for this subject. The in-home market in Dubai does exist and the published rate for it is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel. The reason we do not compete in it for a single-award science course is that the tutor you want is one person credible across all three sciences, and searching within driving distance narrows that search considerably.

What does an in-home science tutor charge in Dubai once travel is counted?+

The published band is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate's table at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. The figure you should work with is cost per hour of teaching rather than the headline rate. A tutor driving thirty-five minutes each way who bills travel at their own rate turns a nominal AED 250 into roughly AED 450 for one hour taught. The better in-home arithmetic is a two-hour weekend booking with a tutor who already lives nearby, which lands close to AED 225.

How much teaching time does a cross-city tutor visit actually lose?+

It depends who absorbs the drive. If the tutor bills it, you pay more per hour taught. If the tutor absorbs it, they will only accept bookings on their existing route, which shrinks your choice of tutor to whoever is already working nearby. If nobody absorbs it formally, it comes out of the lesson, in the form of a session that starts twenty minutes late and still finishes on time. The third version is the common one and the hardest to argue about, because nothing on the invoice records it.

Is a two-hour home session better value than two one-hour online sessions?+

For the calculation-heavy strands inside 0653, almost certainly not. Chemistry arithmetic and physics formula work respond to short frequent repetition until the method is reflexive under time pressure, which is why two separate hours beat one block of two. A two-hour minimum also exists mainly to justify a tutor's drive rather than because two hours is the right length for a Year 11 evening. The exception is full-length paper practice, which needs an uninterrupted stretch and is best placed on a weekend morning.

What extras should I expect on top of the hourly rate?+

Ask about six things before the first session: minimum booking length, travel surcharges outside a stated radius, different rates for weekends and late slots, whether the first diagnostic session is charged, materials or workbook fees, and the cancellation notice period. Materials fees deserve particular scrutiny, because examination board syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes are published free on the board's own website and should not be resold to you as a bundle. Anything advertised as free should carry its conditions in the same place as the word.

Can one tutor genuinely cover biology, chemistry and physics for 0653?+

Some can and many cannot, and it is testable in four minutes. In a trial lesson ask for a mole calculation worked aloud, then an explanation of why food chains rarely exceed four or five links, then a worked example on series and parallel resistance. Those are three different kinds of thinking: recall organised into mechanism, proportional reasoning with units, and formula selection under pressure. A tutor weak in one will steer the hour towards their strength without meaning to, and the student will happily let them.

How do I check a private tutor is permitted to teach in Dubai?+

Ask directly whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. The official route is MoHRE's private tutor licensing service, applied for through the MoHRE app, website or e-services, with a stated completion time of two working days. Because it costs nothing and takes two days, there is no good reason not to hold one.

Should I pay a tutor in cash, and should I expect an invoice?+

Keep a record either way, because with an informal arrangement there is no other paperwork in the relationship. Ask in writing whether the quoted figure includes VAT; an exclusive quote changes the comparison you thought you were making, and providers in this market are inconsistent about saying so. We will not state the VAT treatment of tuition fees here, because that requires a Federal Tax Authority citation rather than an assumption, and IB Gram publishes no tax registration number on this page.

What notice do I need to give to cancel a session?+

Twenty-four hours is the common standard in this market, but the useful conversation is about the specific cases rather than the headline figure. A child off sick that morning. A school trip announced at short notice. An exam timetable published after a block was booked. A family trip over a long weekend. Agree what happens in each of those before you need to, because every one of them is ordinary and all of them are cheaper to settle in week one than in the message where you are asking for a favour.

Can we pause 0653 sessions over the school holidays?+

Yes, and for a Year 10 student a summer pause is usually sensible. For a Year 11 student in the exam term it is a trade worth thinking about, because the calculation strands lose fluency quickly and rebuilding them costs more hours than maintaining them. Where a family is travelling, video delivery means sessions can continue from anywhere with only the time zone to renegotiate, which is the quiet reason it suits Dubai families who spend part of the summer elsewhere.

My son shares a bedroom - where should an online session actually happen?+

A room with a door that closes matters more than the hardware. In an apartment that often means the dining table with everyone else out of the room for an hour, which is a scheduling negotiation rather than a technical one. Headphones help considerably, both for concentration and because the tutor's voice is then not competing with a television. What the student needs on the desk is modest: a device with a working microphone, paper, pencil, ruler and calculator, because much of the work is handwritten and then shown or typed onto the shared screen.

What time can a session start if my daughter gets home at half past four?+

Five o'clock is realistic and half past four is not, because a fifteen-year-old needs to eat and put a bag down before thinking about reacting masses. Most Dubai families settle on one weekday session between 17:00 and 19:00 for teaching, plus a weekend morning slot for anything needing full-length timing. A ninety-minute paper attempted at eight in the evening after a school day produces a score that is not a fair baseline, which makes the diagnostic you paid for misleading.

Is it cheaper to start 0653 support in Year 10 or to wait for Year 11?+

Year 10 is cheaper in total and considerably cheaper per unit of improvement, because it is teaching rather than repair. Roughly thirty weekly sessions across Year 10 removes the need for an intensive block later, and tutors in Dubai have open diaries in October in a way they do not in March. A Year 11 family starting after winter mocks typically needs eighteen to twenty-five sessions before a June series, bought at the point of peak demand. Waiting is a decision to pay more for triage.

What do I do if the tutor is good but my son will not engage with them?+

Say so and the match changes, without having to justify the request. A tutor can be prepared, competent and pleasant, and a particular teenager can still refuse to work with them, and that is not fixed by persistence or by a conversation about attitude. The free full-length trial lesson exists partly to catch this before money changes hands, but fit sometimes fails in week three instead. What is never on offer here is a grade guarantee or a refund tied to a result, because nobody controls the paper or the marking.

Compare the formats on teaching hours, not on headline rates

A Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 home tutor in Dubai is what families type, and the published rate for that service is AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel. Before you compare that against anything, work out what each option gives you per hour of actual teaching, and whether the hour can be aimed at the one science your child is losing marks in. Get the tier from the statement of entry, get a recent paper marked by strand, and test a prospective tutor on all three strands in the trial. That trial is a full-length one-to-one video session at no charge, with no card details taken.
