IB Home Tutor in Dubai Marina

Parents searching for an IB home tutor in Dubai Marina are usually asking something narrower than the words suggest: is there anybody near me who genuinely teaches this syllabus at this level? This page answers that question with the arithmetic rather than with reassurance. It explains how small the local specialist pool actually is for a third Higher Level subject, how to test whether a tutor knows the course, and why one-to-one tuition over live video reaches a Marina household better than a search by postcode ever will.

  • Matched on the Higher Level subject, not on driving distance from the Marina
  • Six questions you can ask any tutor to test real syllabus knowledge
  • Lessons run one to one over live video, never at a Marina address
  • If no specialist is free for your subject, we say so rather than substituting

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Marina

The question underneath the search

A parent in a Marina tower typing a search for a nearby IB tutor is rarely interested in geography for its own sake. The real question is whether anybody within reach actually teaches the course their child is taking: not the International Baccalaureate in general, but Chemistry at Higher Level, or Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or Economics with an internal assessment due in eleven weeks. Proximity is a proxy that parents use because it is the only filter a search engine offers them. It is a poor one, and the honest thing to do is explain why rather than pretend to satisfy it.

Consider what the Diploma actually asks. A student carries six subjects across the groups, three of them at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay and an internal assessment in almost every subject. Each of those internal assessments is marked against published criteria with letters and mark allocations that differ by subject. A tutor who is strong in one subject at Standard Level is not interchangeable with one who has supervised twenty Higher Level explorations in another. Any parent who has watched a well-meaning generalist try to help with a Physics investigation knows this already.

Now consider the pool. Dubai had 227 private schools serving 387,441 students in 2024-25, offering seventeen curricula, and the International Baccalaureate accounted for seven per cent of enrolment against thirty-seven per cent for the UK curriculum. Seven per cent is a real number of students and a small number of specialist teachers, and they are not distributed evenly across the city. Narrow that further to people who teach a particular Higher Level subject, are available at six on a Tuesday, and are willing to drive into a Marina tower and find parking: you are not choosing from a market any more, you are taking what is left.

The Marina itself compounds the problem in a way its residents recognise immediately. It is overwhelmingly residential high-rise. The secondary campuses that Marina and JBR families actually use sit outside the neighbourhood, along Al Sufouh, in Al Barsha and out towards Emirates Hills, which means the school run already consumes the early afternoon. Add a visiting tutor's own journey into the same window and the earliest realistic session drifts past six o'clock, which is after the point at which a tired sixteen-year-old does useful analytical work.

So here is the position stated plainly. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. What we do instead is match on the subject and the level, and deliver the lesson one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. A Marina family gets the Chemistry Higher Level specialist rather than whoever happens to live within a twenty-minute drive. The rest of this page is the detail behind that claim: the arithmetic of local availability, the six questions that test whether a tutor really knows a syllabus, what an in-home arrangement involves in this neighbourhood, how to check a tutor may legally work here, and what happens when the honest answer is that nobody is free.

At a glance

  • A Diploma student carries three Higher Level subjects and an internal assessment in most of them
  • IB programmes account for about seven per cent of Dubai private school enrolment
  • No secondary campus sits inside Dubai Marina; the school run already eats the early afternoon
  • Matching by driving distance shrinks the specialist pool to whoever is nearby
  • IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; lessons are delivered online

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The IB runs as a continuum, and a Marina family may meet two or three stages of it in one household. What follows is what each programme assesses and what it means for finding help in this part of Dubai, where provision is strong but option blocks are narrow.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry organised around six themes, with no external examinations and an exhibition at the end of the programme. Assessment is continuous and teacher-led, so a parent rarely sees a mark they can interpret. Support at this stage is about literacy and number fluency rather than about the programme itself, because the habits that matter later are reading volume and arithmetic confidence, neither of which the programme measures directly.

Several campuses used by Marina and JBR households run the Primary Years Programme and then hand students to a Middle Years Programme or a British Year 7, so the transition point varies by school. Confirm which route your child's campus uses before worrying about programme-specific support; at this age almost nothing needs it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria per subject, each with published strands and achievement levels from one to eight. The criteria are the key to the whole thing: a student who does not know which criterion a task is marked against cannot aim at it. In the final year a Personal Project is completed, supervised in school, and it is the first piece of extended independent work most students meet.

In the Marina cluster the common pattern is an MYP student whose school reports criterion levels that parents find impossible to interpret against the British grades their friends receive. Translating a report into what the criteria actually reward is often the single most useful first conversation with a tutor.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across the groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Most subjects carry an internal assessment marked against published criteria, and the external papers vary in weighting by subject and level. The load is not one subject at a time: it is six concurrent courses with coursework deadlines that collide in the second year.

This is where Marina families most often look outside the school. The reason is structural rather than a comment on teaching: option blocks in any single campus are finite, so a student's third Higher Level is frequently the one with the thinnest specialist cover in the building.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Fewer campuses offer it and fewer parents have heard of it, which means that when a student is on it, finding anybody who has taught the reflective project is genuinely difficult. Where the Diploma courses are shared, subject support works exactly as it does for a Diploma student.

Rarely offered in the New Dubai cluster, but worth naming because families comparing schools sometimes encounter it and assume it is a lesser Diploma. It is a different qualification with a different purpose, and the subject-level support available for it is thinner across the whole emirate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the Diploma subjects Marina and JBR families most often ask about, with what each actually assesses and where marks go missing. Read the descriptions as a shortlist for the conversation with a tutor: a specialist should recognise every detail here without hesitation.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency, calculus and proof, with Higher Level carrying an additional paper that rewards sustained multi-step reasoning. The exploration is marked against published criteria including personal engagement and reflection, which students consistently underweight. Marks go missing on notation, on unjustified steps and on calculator work that is not communicated in the script.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-led problem solving. Often assumed to be the easier route and in fact a different one: it demands confident interpretation of real data and clear written explanation of what a model means. Students who chose it to avoid algebra and then meet the statistics content find the Higher Level version unexpectedly demanding.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The subject Marina families ask about most at Higher Level. Organic mechanisms, equilibrium and energetics carry the conceptual load, and the scientific investigation is marked against published criteria that reward a focused research question above an ambitious one. Marks are lost on uncertainty treatment and on conclusions that restate the data instead of evaluating it.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and fields reward precision with units, prefixes and significant figures, where a correct method and a sloppy final line still lose the mark. The investigation needs a measurable variable and a realistic uncertainty analysis, and the commonest failure is a question that cannot be answered with the equipment available to a school laboratory.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume of content plus data analysis. Higher Level adds depth in physiology and genetics, and the papers reward precise use of command terms far more than students expect. The investigation often founders on a design that produces a trend without a controlled variable, which no amount of writing afterwards can repair.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy, evaluation and the internal assessment portfolio of commentaries on published news articles. Higher Level adds quantitative content and a policy paper. The commentary is where marks are won and lost: a clear link between a specific article, a named concept and a diagram beats a general discussion of the topic every time.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Non-literary and literary texts, an individual oral built on a global issue, and comparative analysis under time pressure. The individual oral is the component students prepare least and the one where a weak global issue cannot be rescued by good delivery. Higher Level adds an essay that demands sustained argument rather than close reading alone.

History

HL and SL

Source evaluation, essay argument and a historical investigation marked against published criteria. The investigation rewards a tightly bounded question and genuine engagement with the limitations of the sources used. Higher Level adds regional depth studies, where the volume of specific detail required catches students who have revised themes rather than cases.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tools, theories and a research project at Higher Level built on primary and secondary evidence. The common failure is a project built on a question the student cannot actually get data for, which becomes apparent far too late. The papers reward application to the named organisation rather than recitation of the tool.

Psychology

HL and SL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches, with an experimental study written up to published criteria. Students lose marks on the inferential statistics and on an analysis section that describes the result without interpreting it. Specialist cover for this subject at Higher Level is thin across the whole emirate, not only in the Marina.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

Comparative study, process portfolio and exhibition. Included because it is the subject where families most often assume no tutoring is possible and where process-portfolio support against the published criteria frequently makes the largest difference. The work remains entirely the student's own; a tutor's role is criteria literacy and feedback.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay, both marked against published criteria and both routinely left too late. Theory of Knowledge is not a subject a student can revise, so support means structured thinking practice and a hard internal deadline, delivered early enough to be useful rather than in the final fortnight.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support that Marina families use, with what each is honestly for. All of it is one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we provide only in India, and this page compares the two rather than blurring them.

A Higher Level subject specialist, weekly

The commonest request from this cluster and the one the whole page is about. A tutor matched to the exact subject and level, following the school's sequence, working on the student's own problems and marking against the published criteria. The point is the match: a Chemistry Higher Level specialist rather than a science tutor who will read ahead.

  • Matched on subject and level before anything about scheduling is discussed
  • Works from the student's own school materials and assessment feedback
  • Internal assessment supported against the published criteria, never written for the student
  • Session notes after each lesson naming the specific objective worked on

Two subjects, two tutors, one evening

A pattern that works over video and collapses in person. Two specialists in consecutive slots on the same evening, each strong in their own subject, rather than one convenient person stretching across both. Households in The Springs and Emirates Hills use this most, usually for a Higher Level science and mathematics.

  • Consecutive slots with no travel between them
  • Each subject taught by someone who teaches it at that level
  • Shared calendar so coursework deadlines in both subjects are visible
  • No single tutor stretched across a subject they do not really hold

Coursework supervision blocks

A short series of sessions tied to one internal assessment, the Extended Essay or the Theory of Knowledge exhibition, timed to the school's internal deadlines rather than to the examination. The work remains the student's own throughout; what a tutor adds is criteria literacy, a view on whether a research question is answerable, and a hard deadline that is not the school's.

  • Research question stress-tested before any data is collected
  • Criteria read letter by letter with the student, not summarised
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never a redraft by the tutor
  • Fixed block with a stated endpoint rather than an open commitment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Marina

01

The arithmetic of a local search, done honestly

Work the numbers rather than the feeling. Dubai has 227 private schools and 387,441 private pupils across seventeen curricula, with the International Baccalaureate accounting for seven per cent of enrolment. That seven per cent is spread across the emirate, and the teachers who serve it are concentrated at the campuses that run the programme. Narrow to a single Diploma subject at Higher Level and the set of people who teach it in Dubai is a few dozen rather than a market. Narrow again to those willing and able to reach a Marina tower on a weekday at five: you are now choosing from a handful.

A parent who hires the best available tutor from that handful has done something quite reasonable and quite different from hiring the best available specialist in that subject. The distinction is invisible until it matters, which is usually the term the internal assessment is due. At that point the question stops being whether the tutor is good with teenagers and becomes whether they can look at a research question and say, within a minute, that it will not generate data capable of supporting a conclusion. That is a specific, learned judgement and it does not correlate with proximity at all.

The table below is the shape of the problem by subject. It is not a precise census and we do not publish one, because any headcount we printed would be unverifiable and this market already has enough unverifiable numbers in it. What the table does instead is describe availability honestly in words: which subjects we can usually match quickly, which take longer, and which we sometimes cannot cover at the time a family wants. That disclosure is uncommon in this SERP and it is the thing a parent can actually use.

The practical conclusion is to invert the search. Instead of asking who is near the Marina and then asking what they teach, ask who teaches this subject at this level and then ask when they are free. The second order produces a better tutor almost every time, and the only thing it costs is the idea of someone sitting at the dining table.

Why a recommendation between Marina families so often disappoints

  • A recommendation evidences reliability, not subject-and-level fit
  • Standard Level revision help and Higher Level coursework support are different jobs
  • Middle Years criteria and Diploma internal assessment criteria are different structures
  • Ask what the other family actually bought: supervision, teaching or criteria coaching
  • Then test the subject knowledge yourself, as though no recommendation existed

The most common route to a tutor in this neighbourhood is a message in a building group or a conversation at the school gate. A friend's son improved, the tutor is available, the rate is known, and the arrangement starts the following week. Perhaps a third of the time it works well. The rest of the time it underperforms, and the reason is almost never that the tutor was bad.

What transfers in a recommendation is reliability, manner and whether the tutor turns up. What does not transfer is the subject-and-level match, which is the thing that actually determines the outcome. A tutor who was excellent for a Standard Level Mathematics student revising for papers is being asked to do something else entirely for a Higher Level student with an exploration due. A tutor who steadied a Middle Years Programme student through criterion-based assessment is not therefore equipped for a Diploma internal assessment with a different criteria structure.

There is a second mismatch that recommendations hide: what the student needed. One child needed a weekly adult who would make them sit down and work, and the tutoring was effectively supervised study with some teaching in it. Another child works willingly for three hours a night and is losing marks because nobody has told them their research question is unanswerable. Both families describe the purchase as a tutor, and the two purchases have almost nothing in common.

The useful way to use a recommendation is as evidence of character and nothing else. Then ask the subject questions separately, and ask them as though no recommendation existed. If a tutor recommended for Economics cannot describe how the internal assessment commentaries are marked, the recommendation is still true and still irrelevant.

03

Six questions that test whether a tutor really knows the syllabus

Parents are often reluctant to interrogate a tutor, partly out of courtesy and partly because they do not feel qualified to judge the answers. In fact you do not need to judge the content of the answer at all. You need only notice whether it arrives immediately and specifically, or arrives wrapped in generalities. A specialist answers these in one sentence each. A willing generalist takes a paragraph and tells you about their approach.

Ask what the internal assessment in this subject is marked against, by name. A specialist will name the criteria and roughly what each is worth. Ask what the commonest reason is that students lose marks in this subject at this level. A specialist has three answers ready and will choose one. Ask what the difference between Higher and Standard Level actually is in this subject, since it varies: more content in one, an extra paper in another, a different internal assessment weighting in a third.

Then ask three practical ones. What would you want to see before the first lesson? The right answer involves the student's own work, not a questionnaire. How will I know in six weeks whether this is working? The right answer involves a marked piece of work compared against a previous one, not a progress report. And what would make you tell me to stop paying? A tutor who cannot answer that last one has never thought about it, which tells you something.

Use the free trial for this. The whole purpose of a trial lesson is to watch a tutor teach your child rather than to hear a coordinator describe a methodology, and the questions above take four minutes at the end of it. The table sets out the six with what a good answer sounds like, in a form you can keep open on a phone during the call.

04

Option blocks, and why the third Higher Level is the one that needs help

There is a structural reason that Diploma families go looking outside the school, and it has nothing to do with the quality of teaching. A school builds option blocks to fit a timetable and a cohort. With a finite number of students and a finite number of teachers, the blocks constrain which combinations of six subjects are actually possible. A student who wants Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level may find two of them available together and the third sitting in a block that clashes.

What usually happens next is a compromise. The student takes the third Higher Level in a subject they wanted less, or takes the subject they wanted in a group where the school has one teacher covering two levels. In a large cohort that is manageable. In a smaller one, which includes several of the campuses this cluster uses, it means a Higher Level set of a handful of students taught alongside a Standard Level group, or taught by a teacher whose own specialism is the adjacent subject.

This is why the enquiries from The Greens, The Views and Emirates Hills skew so heavily towards one specific Higher Level subject rather than towards general support. The family is not dissatisfied with the school. They have identified, correctly, that one of their child's six courses has thinner cover than the others, and they want that one course supported properly. It is a precise purchase and it should be priced and matched as one.

The practical advice is to establish this early. In the spring of the first Diploma year, ask the school which Higher Level sets are small, which are taught alongside Standard Level groups, and which teacher holds each subject. None of that is secret and all of it is useful. A family who knows in April that the third Higher Level has thin cover can arrange support in September, which is a different and much better conversation than the one that starts in February with an internal assessment due.

05

What an in-home arrangement in this neighbourhood actually involves

This deserves to be set out on the facts, because a parent searching for a home tutor is entitled to know what the market offers before being told what we do instead. Published market figures put in-home one-to-one tutoring in this country at AED 180 to 350 an hour according to Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, with independent home tutors quoted from AED 200 to 500 inclusive of travel. Monthly in-home packages of AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits circulate in this market. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200.

The difference between those bands is the travel premium, and in the Marina it buys something quite concrete: a journey into a high-rise community with visitor parking constraints, at the hour when Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road are at their worst, for one hour of teaching. A tutor pricing that journey honestly has to charge for it, and a tutor who does not charge for it will quietly prefer clients closer to home. Neither outcome favours a family in a tower on the water.

The second cost is invisible and larger. Restricting the search to people who will make that journey restricts it to people who live nearby, and the pool of Higher Level specialists who happen to live within a short drive of the Marina is small. The premium therefore buys a commute while simultaneously reducing the quality of the choice, which is the opposite of what the parent paying it intends.

There are cases where a person in the room is genuinely better, and they should be named. A younger child who will not engage with a screen. A student who needs an adult physically present to start work at all. A subject requiring shared physical equipment. A Diploma student at sixteen or seventeen working on an exploration, a commentary or a past paper is none of those: the materials are a document, a criteria sheet and a script, all of which work better on a shared screen that saves the annotation. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, and home tutoring is a service we provide only in India. The table compares the two models on the dimensions that change the result.

Checking that a private tutor may lawfully teach in the UAE

A parent hiring privately in Dubai should ask one question that almost nobody asks, and the answer is a matter of public record rather than opinion. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students.

Two consequences follow for a Marina household. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from the ministry are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so any specific amount you see quoted online is unverified and should be treated as such. And because the permit is free and takes a stated two working days through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system under the service titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, there is no good reason for a working tutor not to hold one. Asking is reasonable and a professional will not be offended.

There is a further restriction that matters specifically when a family is tempted by the most convenient option of all. Press reporting on Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the permit's code of conduct also barring service to students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Treat that as press-reported rather than as the authority's exact wording and verify it against the current policy document, but take the direction seriously: your child's own teacher, privately, is not a route to pursue.

The institutional side is worth stating too, because it is where this market makes its loosest claims. An operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs an educational services permit for a training institute from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested ahead of expiry. IB Gram occupies no premises in the UAE, holds no such permit, and claims no approval, accreditation or endorsement from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the ministry of human resources, the IB or any examination board. Any page that claims otherwise about itself is worth reading twice.

What the trial lesson should prove, and what it cannot

A free trial is only useful if you know what you are watching for, and most families watch for the wrong thing. The instinct is to see whether the tutor and the child get on. That matters, but it is also the easiest thing in the world for a pleasant adult to achieve in an hour and it predicts very little about the next six months.

What a trial can prove is subject depth. Give the tutor a piece of your child's own marked work in advance and watch what they do with it. A specialist will find the pattern in it within a few minutes, name it, and work on that rather than on a prepared introductory topic. They will refer to the criteria or the mark scheme without being asked. They will ask your child to justify an answer rather than confirming it. And they will say something your child has not heard before, which is the clearest single signal available.

What a trial cannot prove is whether your child will do the work between sessions, which is the largest variable in the whole arrangement and the one no tutor controls. It also cannot prove that the match is right for a component the lesson did not touch. A tutor who is excellent on past-paper technique may be untested on an internal assessment, so if the coursework is the reason you are hiring, make the trial about the coursework.

Our own position on trials is deliberate: a full lesson with the tutor your child would actually keep, before any payment, rather than a consultation with a coordinator. If the honest outcome of that lesson is that your child does not need weekly support, or needs it in a different subject, that is a legitimate result and we will say so.

08

The schools around the Marina, and reading a KHDA report properly

Dubai private schools are inspected by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, and inspection outcomes are reported on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. For a Marina family the report is useful in a narrow and specific way that has little to do with the headline band.

The columns to read are attainment and progress, and they are not the same thing. Attainment describes how students perform against expectations. Progress describes how far they have moved. A subject with Good attainment and Acceptable progress is a subject where capable students are coasting, and that is precisely the pattern that produces a Diploma student who has always been fine at Chemistry and is suddenly not fine at Higher Level Chemistry. A family reading only the overall band will miss it entirely.

The context is also worth holding. Dubai's private sector added six schools during 2025-26 with enrolment rising six per cent, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven more private schools, four following the UK curriculum and three offering the International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. The authority also confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a family budgeting tuition alongside fees, that freeze is the relevant anchor.

One further thing a Marina parent should know about every Dubai private school regardless of its curriculum: Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory, with the authority's requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided total weekly time is met, and it is advised that any mandatory subject lesson runs at least twenty-five minutes.

When the honest answer is that nobody is free

Every page in this market promises availability and none of them discusses its limits, which is how a parent ends up with a willing generalist in a Higher Level subject. We would rather publish the limit. There are subjects and time slots where we cannot match a specialist quickly, and in the Marina cluster the pinch points are predictable: Higher Level Psychology, Higher Level Business Management, Visual Arts process portfolio work, and any subject at five o'clock on a Tuesday or Wednesday, which are the two most requested hours in New Dubai.

When that happens there are three honest options and we will put all three to you. Wait, usually a week or two, for the specialist to have a slot. Take a different hour, often a weekend morning, which for extended coursework work is frequently better anyway. Or decide not to proceed, which costs you nothing because the trial has not happened and no payment has been taken. What we will not do is place a tutor who does not hold the subject at that level and hope the family does not notice until February.

There is a fourth situation worth naming. Sometimes the right answer is that tutoring is not the purchase. A student who is not doing the work set by a perfectly good school does not need a seventh hour of instruction; they need the six they already have to land. A student whose internal assessment research question is unanswerable needs one hour with a specialist to find that out, not twenty hours of weekly support. We say these things in the diagnostic conversation, before money moves.

The reason for publishing all of this is simple. A parent in a Marina tower searching for someone nearby who knows the syllabus is asking a sensible question and getting, from most of this market, an answer designed to close a sale. The arithmetic says proximity does not deliver what they want. The honest alternative is a specialist over live video, a trial before payment, and a plain statement when we cannot help.

Where we tutor

The Marina cluster, and what the local specialist pool looks like in each part of it

These are the communities around Dubai Marina whose families ask the same question for the same reason. The differences that matter are which campuses the household is attached to and how much of the afternoon the journey consumes.

JBR

Immediately adjacent and functionally part of the same catchment. Households here face the same constraint as the Marina: towers, no secondary campus inside the community, and a school run that uses the early afternoon before any tutor could arrive.

JLT

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, with its own tower density and a mixture of school attachments. JLT families ask more often about Middle Years Programme criteria and less often about a third Higher Level, which is a genuine difference in the enquiry mix rather than a slogan.

Bluewaters Island

Reached by a single bridge, which makes any visiting arrangement hostage to one route. Families here were among the first to tell us that a fixed video slot was more reliable than an appointment that depended on a causeway at half past five.

Al Sufouh

Where several of the campuses Marina families use actually sit. Households in Al Sufouh have the shortest school run in the cluster, which pushes the earliest workable session earlier and makes a five o'clock start realistic rather than theoretical.

The Greens and The Views

Lower-rise and closer to Al Khail Road, with a noticeable share of Diploma students whose third Higher Level is the subject in question. The requests from here are disproportionately for specific Higher Level sciences rather than for general support.

The Springs and The Meadows

Villa communities inland from the Marina, where families often have two or three children on different programmes. Scheduling consecutive slots for siblings is straightforward over video and close to impossible with a visiting tutor in one evening.

Emirates Hills

Attached to campuses out along the same corridor, with longer runs in both directions. Sessions here settle later in the evening, and the subjects requested skew towards Higher Level mathematics and the Extended Essay.

Palm Jumeirah

A single access road and a long internal distance, which makes the travel calculation worse than the map suggests. Enquiries from the Palm come with more term-time travel than other communities, so a schedule that follows a laptop matters here.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Further inland with a different school mix again, and a higher share of Middle Years Programme and IGCSE enquiries than Diploma ones. Worth listing because Marina families comparing notes with friends here are often comparing different problems.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Marina

Campuses Marina and JBR households most often attend

Students we support attend these schools; they are named as context about the cluster a Marina family chooses within, not as any relationship. What matters for finding a tutor is that option blocks and Higher Level combinations change by cohort, so confirm what actually runs in your child's year with the school rather than with a prospectus.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • American School of Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy

Campuses reached inland along Al Khail Road and Hessa Street

The second ring a Marina household realistically commutes to. The relevance to tutoring is the clock: a longer and less predictable afternoon run pushes the earliest workable session later, which is worth establishing before a weekly slot is agreed rather than after two cancellations.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Safa Community School
  • Sunmarke School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Brighton College Dubai

Named schools are context about the Dubai schooling ecosystem that students we support attend; no affiliation, approval, partnership or endorsement is implied by any school, group or regulator.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject and the level first

Not the programme and not the year group. Chemistry at Higher Level with an investigation due in the spring is a brief. IB help for a Year 12 student is not. The subject and level determine which specialists exist, and everything about scheduling comes after that rather than before it.

  2. 02

Send a piece of your child's own marked work

A returned internal assessment draft with the teacher's comments, or a marked past paper. Ten minutes with real work tells a specialist more than a half-hour call, and it lets us say honestly whether the problem is a knowledge gap, a criteria gap or a work-rate problem that no tutor fixes.

  3. 03

Hear the availability before the pitch

We tell you whether a specialist is free in your preferred hour, how long the wait is if not, and whether this is a subject where our cover is genuinely thin. Marina families overwhelmingly want five or six in the evening, and those slots fill. You get the real answer before any payment.

  4. 04

Use the free trial to test subject depth

A full lesson with the tutor your child would keep, not a consultation with a coordinator. Watch whether the tutor works from your child's own script, refers to the criteria unprompted, and says something your child has not heard before. Ask the six questions at the end; they take four minutes.

  5. 05

Set a review that uses marked work

Every four to six weeks, a marked piece compared with an earlier one against the same criteria. If the comparison does not show movement, the approach changes or we tell you to stop paying. An opinion about progress is not a review, and a monthly report that contains no marked work is an opinion.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on subject and level, not on distance

The search a Marina parent runs is for someone nearby; the thing they actually need is someone who teaches that subject at that level. We invert the order deliberately, because the pool of Higher Level specialists living within a short drive of the Marina is small and choosing from it is not the same as choosing well.

Availability is disclosed, including its limits

There are subjects and hours where we cannot match quickly, and we name them: Higher Level Psychology, Higher Level Business Management, Visual Arts portfolio work, and five o'clock on the two busiest evenings. No competitor page in this market publishes a coverage limit, and it is the most useful thing a parent can be told.

The internal assessment line is explicit

A tutor teaches, reviews the student's own draft and explains the criteria letter by letter. A tutor does not write, redraft or complete an internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay. The risk of a breach falls on the student, so the boundary is on the page rather than in a private message.

You can test the tutor yourself

Six questions are published above with what a real answer sounds like, so a parent who does not know the subject can still judge the specialist. We would rather hand over that checklist than ask anyone to take a claim about tutor quality on trust.

Figures are other providers', named and dated

Every AED rate on this page is a published market figure from a named source in 2026, quoted so you can check it. There is no IB Gram rate card here, no invented statistic, no self-reported rating and no grade promise, because an unsourced number is a liability rather than a selling point.

Delivery is stated, not implied

Lessons are one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we provide only in India. The comparison between the two models is published above on the dimensions that change the result.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Marina: your questions answered

Is there an IB home tutor in Dubai Marina who teaches my child's Higher Level subject?+

Probably not in the way the question imagines, and the honest answer is worth more than a reassuring one. IB programmes account for about seven per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, so the pool of specialists in any one Higher Level subject is small and concentrated at the campuses that run the programme. Narrow it to people who will drive into a Marina tower at five in the evening and you are choosing from a handful. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; we match on the subject and level and teach over live video, which is how a Marina family reaches the specialist rather than the nearest option.

Do you have a tutor who actually lives in Dubai Marina?+

Where a tutor lives is not something we match on, and we would not build the service around it even if we could. The variable that determines whether a Diploma student improves is whether the tutor teaches that subject at that level and has supervised that internal assessment before. Residence predicts none of that. What we do instead is match by subject and level, deliver the lesson one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and tell you plainly how long a match will take. Home visits are a service we provide only in India, not anywhere in the UAE.

How do I test whether a tutor really knows the IB syllabus?+

Ask six questions and listen for speed and specificity rather than judging the content. What is the internal assessment in this subject marked against, by name? Where do students most often lose marks at this level? What actually differs between Higher and Standard Level in this subject, since it varies by subject? What do you want to see before the first lesson? How will I know in six weeks whether this is working? And what would make you tell me to stop paying? A specialist answers each in a sentence. A generalist answers in a paragraph about their approach.

Why do tutor recommendations between Marina families so often disappoint?+

Because what transfers in a recommendation is reliability and manner, and what does not transfer is the subject-and-level match that actually decides the outcome. A tutor who was excellent for a Standard Level student revising papers is being asked to do a different job for a Higher Level student with an exploration due. There is a second hidden mismatch: one family bought supervised study with some teaching in it, another bought criteria coaching, and both describe the purchase as a tutor. Use the recommendation as evidence of character, then test the subject knowledge separately.

Which IB subjects are hardest to find a specialist for in this part of Dubai?+

In the Marina cluster the predictable pinch points are Higher Level Psychology, Higher Level Business Management and Visual Arts process portfolio work, where provision is thin across the whole emirate rather than only locally. Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay supervision are also rarely offered as a tutoring product at all, which is why we match those to the subject specialist the essay sits in rather than to a generic supervisor. We publish this because no competitor page states a coverage limit, and knowing it in September is far better than discovering it in February.

How long does it take to match a Higher Level specialist for a Marina student?+

For Standard Level mathematics or a widely taught subject, usually a few days. For Higher Level mathematics or a Higher Level science at a specific preferred hour, a week is realistic. For the thinner subjects it can take longer, and for Visual Arts portfolio work it is the longest request in this cluster. The constraint is almost always the hour rather than the subject: five and six in the evening are the two most requested slots in New Dubai and they fill first. A weekend morning often matches immediately and suits extended coursework work better anyway.

How do I find out whether my child's school offers the Higher Level combination he wants?+

Ask the school directly, in the spring of the first Diploma year, and ask three specific things: which Higher Level sets are small, which are taught alongside a Standard Level group, and which teacher holds each subject. None of that is confidential and all of it is useful. Option blocks are built around a timetable and a cohort, so some combinations are simply not possible, and the compromise usually lands on the third Higher Level. A family who knows this in April can arrange support in September, which is a much better conversation than the one that starts in February.

What permit should I ask a private tutor in Dubai to show me?+

The private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. The federal service is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system, and it lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so ignore any amount quoted online.

Can a tutor who teaches Cambridge IGCSE also teach IB Diploma properly?+

Some can and many cannot, and the difference is not general ability. The Diploma assesses through internal assessments marked against published criteria, alongside papers whose weightings vary by subject and level, and it adds Theory of Knowledge and an Extended Essay on top. A tutor who has only ever prepared students for terminal written papers has not done the criteria work, and criteria literacy is where most avoidable Diploma marks are lost. Ask directly how many internal assessments in this subject they have supervised. The answer is specific, easy to give and immediately informative.

What should a free trial lesson actually prove?+

Subject depth, not rapport. Send a piece of your child's own marked work in advance and watch what the tutor does with it: a specialist finds the pattern within minutes, names it, refers to the criteria without being asked, and makes your child justify an answer rather than confirming it. The clearest single signal is whether your child hears something new. What a trial cannot prove is whether the work gets done between sessions, which is the largest variable in the arrangement, and it cannot test a component the lesson never touched.

Does a tutor need to know my child's specific school to be useful?+

Far less than parents assume. What matters is the syllabus, the level and the assessment criteria, all of which are set by the IB and are identical whichever campus your child attends. What a tutor does need to know is the school's internal deadlines, because an internal assessment draft due in November drives the work far more than the examination does, and the teacher's own written feedback, because contradicting it confuses the student. Both are supplied by you in ten minutes. Familiarity with a particular building adds very little beyond small talk.

Can one tutor support a third Higher Level subject the school covers thinly?+

That is the single most common purchase we see from this cluster, and it is a good one because it is precise. The school is not failing; option blocks are finite, so one of a student's six courses usually has thinner cover than the others. A weekly hour with a specialist in exactly that subject and level, working on the student's own problems and marking against the published criteria, is a bounded and sensible intervention. Establish it in September rather than in February, because the internal assessment timeline is what makes the difference between support and rescue.

Is a tutor who scored highly in the Diploma better than a trained teacher?+

Not reliably, and the two are often confused. A student who did very well in a subject knows how they succeeded, which is useful but is one route through the material. A teacher who has marked many scripts knows the twenty ways students fail, which is what diagnosis requires. For criteria-marked internal assessments the teaching experience matters more, because the judgement needed is whether a research question will generate data capable of supporting a conclusion. Ask about marking experience rather than about personal results, and be sceptical of any claim of current examiner status that cannot be evidenced.

What happens if no specialist is available for my child's subject this term?+

We tell you, and we put three options to you rather than filling the slot. Wait a week or two for the specialist to have an hour. Take a different time, often a weekend morning, which for extended coursework is frequently better. Or do not proceed, which costs nothing because the trial has not happened and no payment has been taken. What we will not do is place a tutor who does not hold the subject at that level and leave you to discover it when the internal assessment is due.

Does support for Arabic or Islamic Education work the same way?+

The subjects sit differently in a Dubai school, so the context matters. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with the requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ, and combined classes are prohibited. Teaching material for these subjects is constrained: using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is not permitted.

Our tower has slow internet in the evening. Does that make online lessons unworkable?+

It is the most common practical worry from this neighbourhood and in practice it is manageable, because a one-to-one lesson needs far less bandwidth than a household assumes; the heavy part is a shared document and a whiteboard rather than high-definition video. Two things help. Test the connection at the hour you actually want the lesson rather than at midday, because evening congestion in a tower is a different condition. And agree a fallback before you need one, usually audio with the shared screen kept running, so a weak ten minutes costs ten minutes rather than the session.

The useful next step is not a form.
