IB MYP Tutor in Dubai Marina

Hiring an IB MYP tutor in Dubai Marina is a different exercise from hiring an exam tutor, and most families discover that part-way through. There are no past papers to work through and no tier to argue about. There are four lettered criteria per subject, each scored out of eight, and a report that converts the total into a grade from one to seven. This page explains that machinery, then works out where an hour fits in a Marina school week.

  • Work aimed at the criterion descriptor, not at a past paper
  • Criterion levels and the 1-7 conversion explained in plain language
  • Personal Project coached within the IB's own honesty rules
  • Free trial lesson built around a piece of your child's returned work

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Marina

A report with no percentages, and a parent with no reference points

The Middle Years Programme produces a report that most parents cannot read on first sight, and that is the usual reason a Marina family starts looking for help. There is no percentage. There is no class rank. There are four letters, each with a number out of eight next to it, and then a grade from one to seven that bears no obvious relationship to anything. A child who was getting eighty per cent in a previous school now has a five in mathematics, and nobody has explained whether that is good.

It is worth saying clearly that the system is not vague; it is just unfamiliar. Each of the eight subject groups is assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D, and each criterion is scored on a scale from nought to eight against published descriptors. In mathematics, for instance, criterion A is knowing and understanding, B is investigating patterns, C is communicating, and D is applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In the sciences, A is knowing and understanding, B is inquiring and designing, C is processing and evaluating, and D is reflecting on the impacts of science. The criteria are different in each subject group, which is why a child can be a five in mathematics and a seven in language and literature without that being a contradiction.

This has an immediate consequence for tutoring. Because the criteria differ and because they reward different things, 'my daughter needs help with science' is not actionable. A student scoring well on criterion A and poorly on criterion C has a processing and evaluation problem, which is a skills problem, and re-teaching the content will not touch it. A student in the reverse position has a knowledge gap. The returned assessment, with the criterion levels written on it, tells you which, and it is the first thing a tutor should ask to see.

The second consequence concerns timing, which is where the Marina school run comes in. MYP students are eleven to sixteen, which means they are in school until early or mid afternoon, on a bus that returns somewhere between 3:30pm and 4:30pm, and they have activities two or three afternoons a week. Younger MYP students also tire earlier than Diploma students, so a 7pm session is genuinely less useful for an MYP 2 child than a 5pm one. The slot matters more at this stage than it does later.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram does not send an MYP tutor to a Marina address, and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE. Home visiting is a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for UAE families is one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. The practical gain is that a tutor who genuinely knows how the criteria are applied in one subject group can be matched to your child even if nobody within a short drive of your building happens to be that person.

At a glance

  • Eight subject groups, four criteria each, every criterion scored out of eight
  • The criteria differ by subject group, so a grade is not comparable across subjects
  • The returned assessment with criterion levels on it is the diagnostic document
  • Younger MYP students work better at 5pm than at 7pm, which constrains the slot
  • Lessons are one to one over live video, never at a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Middle Years Programme sits in the middle of a continuum, and what a parent should be aiming at depends on which end of it their child is near. The fourth entry covers the optional certificate route, which changes the picture for the schools that offer it.

PYPAges 3-12 · PYP

IB Primary Years Programme

The stage before the MYP in continuum schools, inquiry-led and without the criterion machinery that arrives in MYP 1. The transition is usually smooth socially and jarring academically, because written work suddenly starts being judged against published descriptors rather than against effort and engagement.

In the Marina cluster this transition is the single most common reason for a first tutoring enquiry about a younger child. The support needed is rarely content; it is learning to write to a descriptor, to structure an extended piece and to proofread, which is a set of habits rather than a body of knowledge.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups, each assessed against four lettered criteria scored out of eight. The criterion total out of 32 is converted to a grade from one to seven using published boundaries. The programme core includes approaches to learning, service as action, and a project: the community project in MYP 3 or 4 and the Personal Project in MYP 5.

Around the Marina the MYP runs in the continuum schools in the Meadows, Emirates Hills and Al Sufouh, while neighbouring communities feed British-curriculum schools running IGCSE at the same ages. Families often have one child in each system, and the two need different targets: a descriptor in one case, a markscheme in the other.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

The stage after MYP 5 in continuum schools. Six subjects at Standard or Higher Level, externally examined, plus the extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, activity and service. The shift from criterion-referenced internal assessment to externally examined papers is the largest change a continuum student experiences.

The MYP 5 to Diploma transition is where the most expensive surprises happen in this cluster. A student with strong MYP grades can meet Diploma mathematics or a Diploma science and find the obstacle is quantitative fluency and examination technique rather than understanding, and addressing that in the summer between the two is far cheaper than addressing it in November.

eAMYP 5, where the school offers it

MYP eAssessment and the IB MYP Certificate

An optional external route at the end of MYP 5, combining on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios, leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Not every MYP school offers it, and whether yours does changes the final year significantly: it introduces an externally assessed component into a programme that is otherwise internally assessed.

Ask your school directly whether it enters MYP 5 students for eAssessment, because it is the single biggest variable in what the final MYP year looks like for a Marina student. A school that does enter has students sitting on-screen examinations; a school that does not has students finishing on internal assessment and the Personal Project alone.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight MYP subject groups each carry their own four criteria, and knowing which letter corresponds to what is how a parent reads a report. Below is each group with its criteria and the one that generates the most enquiries from this cluster.

Mathematics

Criteria A to D

A knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating, D applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B is where capable students lose levels, because investigating patterns requires describing a general rule and justifying it, not just finding the next term. Criterion C penalises missing working and poor notation.

Sciences

Criteria A to D

A knowing and understanding, B inquiring and designing, C processing and evaluating, D reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion C is the usual weak point: tables without units in the headings, graphs with poor scales, and evaluations that list errors without ranking them. It is also the most teachable of the four.

Language and literature

Criteria A to D

A analysing, B organizing, C producing text, D using language. Criterion A asks for analysis of how a writer achieves an effect, and the commonest loss is a response that summarises the text instead. Criterion D covers accuracy and register and is where careless proofreading shows up directly in the level.

Language acquisition

Criteria A to D, by phase

Comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Students are placed in a phase rather than a year group, so two children of the same age can be assessed against different expectations, which parents find confusing until it is explained.

Individuals and societies

Criteria A to D

A knowing and understanding, B investigating, C communicating, D thinking critically. Criterion D is where the levels are won and lost: it rewards evaluating sources and recognising different perspectives, and a well-written narrative with no evaluation scores modestly however confident it reads.

Design

Criteria A to D

A inquiring and analysing, B developing ideas, C creating the solution, D evaluating. Design is the subject families most often dismiss and the one where levels are most easily recovered, because it is largely a documentation discipline: a design folder that records the process properly earns levels a better product without documentation does not.

Arts

Criteria A to D

A investigating, B developing, C creating or performing, D evaluating. As in design, the process journal carries real weight. A student who produces strong work and documents nothing will be marked on what is recorded, which is a hard lesson when it arrives on a report.

Physical and health education

Criteria A to D

A knowing and understanding, B planning for performance, C applying and performing, D reflecting and improving performance. The written components surprise families who assumed this subject was practical, and criteria A, B and D are all desk work that a tutor can help with.

Interdisciplinary units

Assessed against their own criteria

Units that deliberately combine two subject groups and are assessed on disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. They are reported separately and they confuse parents more than any other part of the report, because the grade sits alongside the subject grades without belonging to any of them.

Approaches to learning

Taught across all subjects

Research, thinking, communication, social and self-management skills. These are not separately graded but they are the mechanism by which criterion levels rise, and for a younger MYP student explicit work on note-taking, planning and proofreading often moves levels further than subject content does.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

MYP support takes three shapes, all one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. The format depends far more on the child's age and on which criterion is weak than on the subject named in the enquiry.

Criterion-targeted subject work

A weekly or fortnightly slot aimed at one subject group and, within it, at the one or two criteria where levels are being lost. Because the criteria reward different things, this is a much narrower and faster piece of work than general subject help: a criterion C problem in sciences is a tables-and-graphs problem and can be fixed in a few sessions.

  • Starts from the returned assessment with the criterion levels on it
  • Published descriptors read with the student so they know what is being judged
  • Work redrafted against the descriptor rather than against a mark out of ten
  • Written note after each session naming which criterion was worked on

Approaches-to-learning work for younger students

For MYP 1 to 3, often the highest-yield support available and rarely what a parent initially asks for. Note-taking, planning an extended piece before writing it, proofreading, managing a multi-week task, and keeping a process journal that actually records the process. These habits raise levels across every subject group at once.

  • Planning taught as a step that happens before writing, not after
  • Proofreading as a routine with a fixed checklist
  • Long-task management broken into dated checkpoints
  • Process journal and design folder habits built early

The MYP 5 to Diploma bridge

A defined block in the final MYP terms or the summer that follows, aimed at the specific things the Diploma assumes and the MYP does not require: algebraic fluency at speed, quantitative work in the sciences, examination technique and timed writing. It has an end point, which makes it easier to judge than an open commitment.

  • Algebraic and arithmetic fluency rebuilt to the standard Year 12 assumes
  • Timed writing introduced, since MYP assessment is rarely timed
  • Quantitative science work, particularly the mole for chemistry-bound students
  • Finishes before the Diploma starts rather than running on

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Dubai Marina

MYP tutors are matched on subject group and on which criterion is costing your child levels, because the four criteria reward genuinely different things. A student losing levels on criterion A needs content work; a student losing them on criterion D needs to be taught how a reflection is judged.

01

What MYP tutoring is for when there is no examination to prepare for

The honest starting point is that a lot of MYP tutoring is sold without anybody defining what it is supposed to achieve. In an examined course the target is obvious. In the MYP there is no paper to practise, no tier to argue about and no boundary to cross, so a weekly hour can continue for a year producing pleasant sessions and no change in the levels on the report.

Defining the target is therefore the whole job. In the MYP the target is always a criterion in a subject group, and the evidence is always the returned assessment with the levels written on it. A child at six on criterion A and three on criterion C in sciences does not need science help; they need to learn how data is processed and evaluated to the standard the descriptor sets out. That is a few sessions of concrete work, not a year of general support.

The second legitimate target is the approaches-to-learning skills that sit underneath every subject group. For younger MYP students these move levels more reliably than content does, because the thing holding the level down is often that the piece was written without a plan, or not proofread, or produced in one evening when it was set three weeks earlier. Those are fixable habits and they improve every subject at once, which makes them the best value available in the whole programme.

The table below sets out, stage by stage, what MYP support is usually for. It is a rough guide rather than a rule, but it is a better starting point than assuming the answer is a weekly hour in the weakest subject.

Reading the report: four criteria, thirty-two points, one grade

Here is the mechanism, in the order a parent needs it. Each subject group has four criteria, lettered A to D. Each criterion is assessed against published descriptors on a scale from nought to eight. Over a reporting period, teachers judge the level that best describes the student's performance on each criterion, giving four numbers. Those four are added to a total out of 32, and the total is converted to a final grade from one to seven using published boundaries.

Two things follow that explain most parental confusion. First, the criteria are different in each subject group, so a five in mathematics and a five in individuals and societies do not represent the same achievement in any comparable sense; they represent similar totals against different descriptors. Second, because four criteria are summed, one weak criterion drags the grade more than a parent expects. A student at seven, seven, seven and three has a total of 24, which sits several points below where their subject understanding would suggest.

That second point is the practical one. It means the fastest route to a better grade is almost always the weakest criterion rather than more work on the strongest. It also means a student can improve substantially in a subject and see no movement in the grade, because the criterion that was holding them down was not the one they worked on. Reading the criterion levels rather than the grade is how a family avoids spending a term on the wrong thing.

The conversion boundaries below are the ones commonly published for the MYP. Confirm them against your own school's reporting documentation, because schools publish their own guidance and the way levels are combined over a reporting period varies in practice. What is not school-specific is the structure: four criteria, eight points each, summed, converted.

03

The Marina school run, and when an MYP hour genuinely works

MYP students are younger than the Diploma students most tutoring is designed around, and that changes the scheduling arithmetic in a way parents underestimate. An eleven or thirteen year old does not produce useful work at 7:30pm after a full school day, a bus journey and an activity. The quality of an MYP session depends on the slot more than on almost anything else, which makes the Marina school run a genuine constraint rather than a logistical footnote.

The pattern across this cluster is consistent. Buses from the Al Sufouh and Meadows schools return to Marina and JBR addresses somewhere between about 3:30pm and 4:30pm. Al Barsha South and Sports City routes run later, and Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens addresses later still. Activities occupy two or three afternoons. What remains, for most households, is a narrow window between about 4:30pm and 6pm on the uncommitted days, and for younger students that window is where a session has to go.

Where the window does not exist, the weekend is better than a late weekday slot. A Saturday morning session with a rested MYP 2 student is worth considerably more than a Tuesday 7:30pm session with the same child, and families often resist that conclusion because the weekend feels protected. The alternative is paying for an hour in which the student is too tired to produce the work the hour is meant to improve.

The table below sets out an indicative picture for the continuum schools serving this cluster, with the eAssessment question included because it changes the final MYP year. Treat the times as a starting point and confirm them against your own school's current timetable.

The Personal Project: supervisor, tutor, and the line between them

  • Scope is the commonest failure; the project is too large to finish, not too hard
  • The process journal carries weight and cannot honestly be reconstructed later
  • A tutor coaches the process; a tutor never writes or redrafts the report
  • The school supervisor remains the person who confirms the work is the student's own

In MYP 5 every student completes a Personal Project, supervised by a member of staff at the school who confirms the work is the student's own. It is the component families most often want outside help with, and the boundaries are as strict as they are for the Diploma's internally assessed work. A tutor who is vague about those boundaries is a risk rather than a resource.

What a tutor may legitimately do is substantial. Help the student interrogate their own idea for scope, because the commonest failure is a project too large to finish. Explain what the assessment criteria reward and in what language. Teach the research and referencing skills the project assumes. Coach the process journal, which carries real weight and which students routinely treat as an afterthought to be filled in retrospectively. Read a draft the student has written and give feedback the student then implements themselves. Help with time management against the school's own deadlines.

What a tutor must not do is equally clear. A tutor does not choose the project, does not write the report, does not draft any section of it, and never edits the student's Personal Project to completion. The supervisor of record is the school. Where a provider offers to produce the work, that is academic malpractice, the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller, and in this market at least one provider sells completed assessed work as a product. Ask the direct question before booking anybody and treat a hedged answer as the answer.

The most useful intervention, in practice, is early and unglamorous. Most Personal Project difficulty is scope and sequencing rather than ability: a student picks something that cannot be completed in the time available, or leaves the journal empty for ten weeks and then cannot reconstruct the process. Thirty minutes spent on the plan in the first fortnight prevents more trouble than several hours spent on the report in the last one.

05

eAssessment: the question that changes the final MYP year

One question changes what MYP 5 looks like more than any other, and many parents in this cluster have never been asked it: does your school enter MYP 5 students for eAssessment? The route combines on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios and leads to the IB MYP Certificate. It is optional, schools decide, and the decision is not always prominent in the information families receive.

If your school does enter, the final MYP year contains an externally assessed component in a programme that is otherwise internally assessed, and that changes the preparation materially. On-screen examinations are timed, and timed assessment is something many MYP students have had very little practice at, because criterion-referenced tasks are usually produced over days or weeks. A student who writes well over three evenings can write poorly in ninety minutes, and discovering that during the assessment itself is avoidable.

If your school does not enter, MYP 5 finishes on internal assessment and the Personal Project, and the preparation that matters is different: it is about the transition into the Diploma rather than about an examination. In that case the sensible use of the final MYP terms is building the examination technique and quantitative fluency Year 12 will assume, because nothing in the MYP will have required either.

Either way, the useful thing a parent can do is ask the question and then plan accordingly. It is a one-line email to the MYP coordinator. The answer determines whether the final year needs timed practice built into it or whether the available time is better spent bridging into the Diploma, and those are substantially different uses of the same months.

06

From MYP 5 into the Diploma: the gap nobody budgets for

The most expensive educational problem in this cluster is not an MYP grade. It is the first term of the Diploma, when a student with strong MYP results meets externally examined courses and finds the obstacle is not understanding. It is quantitative fluency, timed writing, and the examination technique a criterion-referenced programme never required. New Diploma content arrives weekly from the first week, so there is no quiet period in which to catch up, and families end up buying far more support in Year 12 than a short bridging block would have cost.

The gaps are specific rather than general. For mathematics: algebraic manipulation at speed and without error, and comfort with a graphic display calculator if the school expects one. For the sciences: the mole and quantitative chemistry, uncertainty handling, and the discipline of carrying units through a multi-step calculation. For every subject: writing to time, which is a skill in itself, and answering the command term that was used rather than the one the student expected.

A block across the final MYP term and the summer handles this, and it has a clear end point, which makes it easier to judge than an open commitment. Because so many families in this cluster travel for long stretches of the summer, it is worth noting that a lesson delivered over live video follows the laptop, so the block can run across time zones rather than being abandoned in July and restarted too late in August.

There is a related decision worth taking deliberately rather than by default. A continuum student is not obliged to continue into the Diploma; several British-curriculum sixth forms in this cluster take students at 16 from MYP, and the A Level route suits some students better. The question to put to both your current school and any target school is what each assumes a student arriving from MYP 5 already has, because the answers differ and they tell you what the bridging block should contain.

07

What MYP tutoring costs, and why it sits lower in the market

MYP support generally sits in the lower half of the published Dubai rate bands, and it is worth understanding why before judging a quote. Examination-specialist pricing reflects knowledge of a particular paper, a particular markscheme and a particular set of grade boundaries. MYP work rewards something else: knowing how the criteria are applied and being able to teach a thirteen year old to plan, draft and proofread. That is valuable and it is not the same scarce commodity as a Higher Level examiner's knowledge, so the market prices it differently.

The published figures, each attributed and recorded in October 2026, are these. EdFlik advertises tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. TutorChase lists AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table places IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 with home tutors reaching AED 500, and BartyED quotes AED 650 at the named end. Monthly estimates from that table run AED 240 to 600 for a weekly budget session, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. A packaged offer of AED 799 a month for eight online sessions appears in the market.

For an MYP student the practical implication is that the top of that range is usually unnecessary and the bottom is often adequate for approaches-to-learning work, while criterion-specific subject work in MYP 4 and 5 sits sensibly in the middle. The in-home premium, which published rates put at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 online, buys travel rather than better teaching, and for a younger student it has a second cost: a visiting tutor arriving at 6pm is arriving after the point at which the child could have used the hour.

Worth adding for context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. School fees remain the dominant number in a family's education budget, and five years of MYP is a long period over which to carry an unnecessary tutoring commitment. None of the figures above is an IB Gram price and we publish no rate card on these pages; the sensible first step is a free trial lesson and an honest view of whether weekly support is needed at all.

08

What to ask before buying any MYP tutoring

  • Name the four criteria for this subject group and say what each rewards
  • Which criterion is holding the grade down, and what in the assessment shows that?
  • What will the first three sessions cover, and why those?
  • Ask the school directly what they would like worked on at home

Because the MYP has no paper to point at, this is the stage of schooling where tutoring is most easily sold on reassurance rather than on need. Four questions protect a family from that, and they are all answerable in a first conversation.

Ask the tutor to name the four criteria for the subject group in question and say what each one rewards. Somebody who works in the MYP answers immediately; somebody who teaches the subject but not the programme will describe content instead. Ask which criterion they think is holding your child's grade down, having seen the returned assessment, and listen for a specific letter rather than a general comment. Ask what the first three sessions will cover and why those. And ask what they will do if your child sends a Personal Project draft two days before the deadline, because the honest answer is feedback the student must implement themselves, and two days may not be enough for that to help.

Then one question for the school rather than the tutor, and it is the most useful of all: what would you like us to work on at home? MYP teachers generally answer this precisely, naming a criterion and a skill, and it is free. A surprising number of tutoring commitments in this cluster would be shorter, cheaper or unnecessary if that question had been asked first.

One final point on what no provider should claim. No tutoring company is approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the IB, KHDA or any other authority unless it holds the specific thing it names and can produce the document; IB Gram holds none of them, operates no UAE office or centre, and does not publish a star rating it generated about itself. Private tutoring in the UAE does require the individual to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued free of charge for two years, so asking a prospective tutor whether they hold it is both reasonable and easy to answer.

Where we tutor

Which communities this page is for

MYP students in this part of Dubai are concentrated in a handful of continuum schools, and the practical shape of the afternoon differs by community. The notes below cover what that means for an MYP session rather than for a Diploma one.

The Springs and The Meadows

Beside a long-established continuum school, so this is where MYP enquiries from the cluster are most concentrated, often about a child who moved from PYP into MYP 1 and met criteria for the first time.

Emirates Hills

Close to two continuum schools, so households here frequently have one child in MYP and an older sibling in the Diploma, with the MYP 5 to Diploma transition already visible in the family.

JBR

Short bus run to the Al Sufouh schools, which makes an earlier slot workable. That matters more for MYP than for older students, because an eleven or twelve year old works better at 5pm than at 7pm.

JLT

Mixed school destinations, so a JLT street often contains MYP students and IGCSE students of the same age. The two need different targets and a tutor should not treat them alike.

The Greens and The Views

A common point of arrival into the MYP mid-programme, from both British and American systems. Those students need the criterion machinery explained explicitly rather than absorbed.

Al Sufouh

Senior schools sit here and co-curricular activities run late, so an MYP session often has to go to a weekend morning rather than compete with a tired weekday evening.

Bluewaters Island

One causeway in and out. For younger students, where an earlier slot is genuinely better, a lesson that needs no journey is what makes the earlier slot possible.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Longer bus legs, and MYP students arriving home later and more tired. Weekend sessions work better here than weekday ones for anything requiring sustained concentration.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the returned assessment, not the report card

The document with the criterion letters and levels written on it is the diagnostic. A photograph is enough. The report grade tells us a total; the criterion levels tell us which of four very different things is wrong, and that determines everything about what the sessions should contain.

  2. 02

Tell us the age and the afternoon shape

MYP covers eleven to sixteen, and an MYP 1 student and an MYP 5 student need different things at different times of day. Give the bus return time for your address and the committed afternoons, so the slot lands in the window where your child can actually produce work.

  3. 03

Ask the school what to work on

Before the trial, send the MYP coordinator or subject teacher one line asking what they would like supported at home. They usually answer with a criterion and a skill, it costs nothing, and it frequently shortens or removes the need for a tutoring commitment altogether. We would rather you asked.

  4. 04

Take the free trial on a real piece of work

One session at no cost, spent on something your child has already submitted and had assessed, with the criterion levels visible. You get a written note naming the criterion being targeted and what the first few sessions will do. Where the honest answer is approaches-to-learning work rather than subject content, the note will say so.

  5. 05

Review against the next reported levels

Progress in the MYP is judged on the criterion levels in the next reporting period, not on how sessions felt. If the targeted criterion has moved and the others held, it worked. If nothing moved, the target was wrong and we change it rather than adding hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work from criterion levels, not from grades

A grade is a sum of four very different judgements, and one weak criterion drags it further than parents expect. Starting from the returned assessment rather than the report card is what stops a family spending a term improving the criterion that was already strong.

Approaches to learning treated as real work

For MYP 1 to 3, planning before writing, proofreading as a routine and managing a multi-week task move levels across every subject group at once. It is rarely what a parent asks for and it is frequently the highest-yield support in the programme.

Honest about when tutoring is not the answer

The MYP is the stage where tutoring is most easily sold on reassurance. We would rather you asked the subject teacher what to work on at home first, and we will say plainly when the answer is a shorter block, a different criterion, or nothing at all.

Personal Project coached, never produced

A tutor helps a student test the scope of their own idea, explains what the criteria reward, teaches research and referencing, coaches the process journal and gives feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor does not choose, write or redraft the project. The school supervisor remains the person who confirms authorship.

Scheduled for a younger student's day

An eleven or thirteen year old produces little of value at 7:30pm after a bus and an activity. Sessions are placed in the window between the school run and the evening, or moved to a weekend morning where that window does not exist, because the slot affects the outcome more at this age than later.

A bridge into the Diploma with an end point

The expensive problem is the first Diploma term, not the MYP grade. A defined block covering algebraic fluency, quantitative science work and timed writing before Year 12 begins costs a fraction of remediation in November, and it finishes rather than continuing indefinitely.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Marina: your questions answered

What do the letters and numbers on my child's MYP report actually mean?+

Each subject group is assessed against four criteria lettered A to D, and each criterion is scored from nought to eight against published descriptors. The four scores are added to a total out of 32, and that total converts to a final grade from one to seven. The criteria differ between subject groups, so a five in mathematics and a five in individuals and societies are not the same achievement in any comparable sense. The practical consequence is that the criterion levels tell you far more than the grade does, because one weak criterion pulls the total down several points.

Why has my son's grade not moved even though his understanding has improved?+

Almost certainly because the criterion holding him down is not the one he has been working on. Four criteria are summed, so a student at seven, seven, seven and three has a total of 24 and a grade well below what his subject understanding suggests. Improving the strong criteria changes very little. The weak one is where the points are. Look at the returned assessments rather than the report, find the lowest letter, and target that specifically. In the sciences it is frequently criterion C, processing and evaluating, which is a skills problem rather than a knowledge one.

Is an MYP tutor even necessary when there are no exams?+

Often not, and this is the stage of schooling where tutoring is most easily bought on reassurance. Before committing, send the subject teacher or MYP coordinator one line asking what they would like supported at home. They usually answer with a specific criterion and a specific skill, it costs nothing, and it frequently shortens or removes the need. Where support genuinely helps is narrow: one criterion in one subject group, or approaches-to-learning habits for a younger student. A general weekly hour with no defined target can run for a year and change nothing.

My daughter has just moved from PYP into MYP 1 and is struggling. What changed?+

Work started being judged against published descriptors rather than against effort and engagement, and that is a genuine shift rather than a harder syllabus. What usually holds a new MYP 1 student back is not content: it is writing without a plan, not proofreading, and producing in one evening something that was set three weeks earlier. Those are habits and they respond quickly. Reading the actual descriptor with the student, so they can see what is being judged, is often the single most useful hour anybody spends with them in that first year.

What is the most common reason a Personal Project goes wrong?+

Scope, not ability. Students choose something that cannot be completed in the time the school has allocated, and the realisation arrives too late to change direction cleanly. The second most common reason is an empty process journal: ten weeks pass, nothing is recorded, and the process cannot honestly be reconstructed afterwards because the journal is meant to document decisions as they happen. Thirty minutes spent testing the plan in the first fortnight prevents far more trouble than several hours spent on the report in the last one.

How much help is a tutor allowed to give with the Personal Project?+

A substantial amount, within clear limits. A tutor may help the student interrogate their own idea for scope, explain what the assessment criteria reward and in what language, teach research and referencing skills, coach the process journal, give feedback on a draft the student has written, and help with time management against the school's deadlines. A tutor must not choose the project, write the report, draft any section or edit it to completion. The school supervisor confirms the work is the student's own, and at least one provider in this market sells completed assessed work, which puts the student at risk rather than the seller.

Does our school enter MYP 5 students for eAssessment, and does it matter?+

Ask the MYP coordinator directly, because it is optional, schools decide, and it changes the final MYP year more than anything else. The route combines on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios and leads to the IB MYP Certificate. If your school enters, the final year contains timed external assessment in a programme that is otherwise internally assessed, and timed work is something many MYP students have had very little practice at. If your school does not enter, the final year finishes on internal assessment and the Personal Project, and the available time is better spent bridging into the Diploma.

What time of day works best for an MYP session in the Marina?+

Earlier than families expect. Buses from the Al Sufouh and Meadows schools return to Marina and JBR addresses between about 3:30pm and 4:30pm, with Al Barsha South, Sports City and Al Furjan routes later. Activities occupy two or three afternoons. What is left is a narrow window between roughly 4:30pm and 6pm on uncommitted days, and for an eleven to thirteen year old that is where a session has to go. Where the window does not exist, a Saturday morning with a rested student is worth considerably more than a 7:30pm weekday hour with a tired one.

Why is my child a seven in English and a four in maths under the same system?+

Because the criteria are different in each subject group and reward different abilities. Language and literature assesses analysing, organizing, producing text and using language. Mathematics assesses knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student who writes analytically and dislikes justifying a general rule will do well on one set and less well on the other, and the two grades are not measuring the same thing. It is not a contradiction and it does not mean one teacher is marking harder than the other.

What should we do in the final MYP terms to get ready for the Diploma?+

Build the two things the MYP never required. Quantitative fluency, meaning algebraic manipulation at speed and without error, plus the mole and unit discipline for a chemistry-bound student and uncertainty handling for any science. And writing to time, which is a distinct skill from writing well, because criterion-referenced tasks are usually produced over days. Add graphic display calculator comfort if the school expects one. A defined block across the final term and the summer does it, with an end point, and it costs a fraction of repairing the same gap during a first Diploma term.

How much should MYP tutoring cost compared with Diploma tutoring?+

Less, and for a legitimate reason. Examination-specialist pricing reflects knowledge of a particular paper, markscheme and set of boundaries; MYP work rewards knowing how the criteria are applied and being able to teach a thirteen year old to plan, draft and proofread. Published Dubai figures recorded in October 2026 run from AED 33 to 65 an hour at EdFlik and Tutopiya, AED 150 upwards at Unitors for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, AED 270 at TutorChase, and AED 200 to 450 and above for specialists in Bestimate's rate table. For most MYP work the middle of that range is sufficient and the top is unnecessary.

Do you send an MYP tutor to our home in Dubai Marina?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, and home visiting is a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for UAE families is delivered one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For a younger student there is a specific advantage: a visiting tutor arriving at 6pm after a drive is arriving past the point at which an MYP 2 child can use the hour well, whereas a session with no journey attached can start at 4:45pm. The in-home rates quoted on this page are other providers' published market figures, not an offer.

What are interdisciplinary units and why is there a separate grade for them?+

They are units that deliberately combine two subject groups and are assessed against their own criteria, covering disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. They are reported separately, which is why a grade appears on the report that does not belong to any single subject. They confuse parents more than any other element of MYP reporting. For tutoring purposes they rarely need separate attention: a student who can plan, structure and reflect in their individual subjects usually performs adequately in the interdisciplinary unit as well.

Can one tutor help across several MYP subject groups?+

For approaches-to-learning work, yes, and that is the case where it is actually preferable: planning, note-taking, proofreading and long-task management are general habits and a single person teaching them consistently across subjects is better than three people teaching them separately. For criterion-specific subject work the answer is no, because the four criteria differ by subject group and someone who knows how criterion B is applied in mathematics will not necessarily know how criterion C is applied in the sciences. Decide which of the two you are buying before you book.

Should my child stay in the IB after MYP 5 or move to A Levels?+

It depends on the student rather than on the programmes, and it is a decision worth taking deliberately rather than by default because a continuum student is not obliged to continue. Several British-curriculum sixth forms in this cluster take students at 16 from MYP. The Diploma suits students who work across breadth and manage several deadlines at once; A Levels suit students who want depth in three or four subjects. Ask both your current school and any target school what they assume a student arriving from MYP 5 already has, because the answers differ and they tell you what bridging work is needed.

Start with the criterion, not the subject

If you are looking for MYP support for a child in Dubai Marina, two things make the decision straightforward. Find the returned assessment with the criterion letters and levels written on it, because that shows which of four very different things is holding the grade down. Then send one line to the subject teacher asking what they would like supported at home, which is free and frequently makes the tutoring shorter or unnecessary. If a session is still the right answer, the free trial is spent on a real piece of your child's assessed work, delivered one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, in a slot placed where a younger student can still think.
