IB English Tutor in Dubai

Families hiring an IB English tutor in Dubai almost never need two years of weekly lessons. They need a defined block before the Individual Oral, a run of Paper 1 analysis practice, or a reader for the HL Essay. This page budgets English support by the month rather than by the hour, sets out what each of the four assessed components asks for, and explains where Dubai candidates reliably leave marks behind. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Budget IB English support in Dubai by the month, because that is how it is actually used

Hourly rates are the wrong unit for English. A mathematics student may need a steady weekly hour for two years; an English A candidate normally needs three or four concentrated blocks, each tied to a component with a date on it. Pricing the subject by the hour makes families either overbuy a year of weekly lessons they do not need or underbuy a four-session block in the fortnight before an oral. Monthly modelling fixes that, and it is what the rest of this page does.

The market numbers that feed a monthly budget are published, if scattered. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Advertised packages in the Dubai market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Per hour, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end, Unitors lists IB from AED 200, TutorChase quotes AED 270 and BartyED charges AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Each of those is the provider's own figure.

Converting those into an English plan is arithmetic once you know the components. English A is assessed through a guided textual analysis paper, a comparative essay paper, an Individual Oral, and at Higher Level an additional 1,200 to 1,500 word HL Essay. Each carries a published weighting and each fails in its own way. A family that knows the weightings can budget a block against each component and stop paying for weeks when nothing is due.

There is a second reason monthly framing suits Dubai specifically. The emirate's school population is mobile and its calendar is interrupted: the UK-curriculum share of private enrolment stood at 37% in 2024-25 against 7% for the International Baccalaureate, which means many English A candidates arrive from an IGCSE English Language and Literature background and need a short, intensive reorientation rather than ongoing support. Ramadan, the mock window and family travel all compress the usable weeks, so a monthly commitment that can be paused is more honest than a year-long one that cannot.

Delivery is stated once and plainly. English support for Dubai families runs one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we provide only in India. For an oral component that benefits from recording and playback, and for analysis work on a shared screen where both people annotate the same passage, that is not a compromise but an improvement. It also widens the pool: English A splits across two routes and two levels, so the number of genuine specialists within driving distance of any single Dubai community is small, while the number reachable over video is not.

At a glance

  • English A is bought in blocks tied to components, not as a standing weekly hour
  • Monthly market bands for one weekly hour: AED 240 to 600, 600 to 1,200, or 1,000 to 2,000+
  • Paper 1 is 35% of the grade at both SL and HL on both English A routes
  • The HL Essay exists only at Higher Level and runs to 1,200-1,500 words
  • The Individual Oral lasts 15 minutes including five minutes of questions
  • Sessions run over live video on Gulf Standard Time; no UAE home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English sits in the IB from the earliest years, but it changes character twice: once when criterion-referenced assessment arrives in the Middle Years Programme, and again when the Diploma Programme replaces coursework with timed analysis of unseen text. Dubai families usually feel both transitions.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

English A is a Group 1 studies in language and literature course, offered as Language and Literature or as Literature, at Standard or Higher Level. Assessment is a guided textual analysis paper, a comparative essay paper on studied works, an Individual Oral on a global issue, and at Higher Level an HL Essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words on one studied text. A learner portfolio runs through both years and is not itself assessed, but it feeds everything that is.

Dubai DP candidates mostly come to English A from IGCSE or from MYP, and the two arrive with opposite problems. IGCSE students can write to a question but have rarely analysed an unseen extract without a lead-in. MYP students have analysed widely but to a criterion rubric with no timed paper. Diagnosing which of those two gaps a Dubai student has is the first job of a trial session.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language and Literature assesses analysing, organising, producing text and using language against four criteria, with no external examination. Students learn to write about writers' choices, which is the central DP skill, but they do it with time to think and a rubric in front of them. The jump to a timed guided analysis in DP1 is a jump in conditions rather than in content.

Dubai's IB continuum schools run MYP straight into DP, so the content handover is clean. The handover that is not clean is timing: MYP5 students routinely produce strong analytical writing over a week and then stall when asked for the same quality in 75 minutes. A short block on planning under time pressure in the first term of DP1 is the cheapest intervention available in this subject.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students take a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course alongside their DP subject choices, and English A is a common DP pairing because almost every career-related study depends on written communication. The assessment load is lighter overall but the English A components are identical to a DP candidate's, including the Individual Oral.

A CP student in Dubai is often the only candidate in their year sitting a particular DP course, which removes the informal benchmarking that makes a cohort useful. For English that matters more than for most subjects, because judging the quality of your own analysis against nobody is nearly impossible. A tutor who has read scripts across the range supplies that comparison.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP language work builds reading stamina, vocabulary breadth and the habit of explaining why a text produces an effect. None of it is assessed externally and none of it should be sold as IB English tutoring. Where Dubai families ask for support at this stage, the honest framing is reading fluency and written expression, which will matter later without being the DP course.

Dubai's primary IB provision is expanding, with International Baccalaureate schools among the seven private schools joining the 2026-27 intake. The useful planning point for parents of younger children is that the English A route decision, Language and Literature or Literature, is taken in Year 11, and reading volume accumulated before then is the single best preparation for either.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

English A is the course most often combined with others for Dubai DP students, partly because it is compulsory in some form and partly because essay technique transfers. These are the courses families most often bundle with an English request.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Studies literary and non-literary texts together. Paper 1 is a guided analysis of two unseen passages, one literary and one not. Marks go missing when students treat a non-literary text as though it were a poem, or ignore the guiding question entirely and write a general appreciation.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

Literary works only, across forms and periods, with Paper 1 offering two unseen literary passages. The characteristic failure is paraphrase: retelling what happens in the extract instead of analysing how the writer produces an effect. Stronger candidates quote short and comment long.

English B

HL and SL

The language acquisition route for students who are not working at English A level. Assessed through reading, listening, writing and an individual oral based on a visual stimulus at SL or an extract from a literary work at HL. Dubai schools place students carefully between English A and B, and a wrong placement is worth checking early.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Shares its central question with English A: how do we know what a text means? Students who engage with TOK write better Paper 2 conclusions because they are used to acknowledging the limits of an interpretation rather than asserting one.

History

HL and SL

The closest essay-skills partner. Historians learn to build an argument from evidence and to weigh competing readings, which is exactly what a comparative Paper 2 essay rewards. Students taking both usually find that improvement in one shows up in the other within a term.

Psychology

HL and SL

Useful for English A candidates whose analysis of character and motivation stays on the surface. Psychology supplies vocabulary for talking about behaviour precisely, which tightens writing about character without turning the essay into a diagnosis.

Business Management

HL and SL

Frequently paired with English A by Dubai students planning commerce or law degrees. The written communication demands overlap: both reward a clear claim supported by selected evidence, and neither rewards unstructured description.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

Trains close reading of composition, framing and effect, which transfers directly to the non-literary texts in Language and Literature Paper 1. Students who can analyse an advertisement visually usually find the written analysis easier once the vocabulary is supplied.

Economics

HL and SL

Bundled with English A often enough to mention. The shared skill is evaluation: both subjects penalise assertion and reward weighed judgement with a conclusion that follows from the evidence rather than restating the question.

Arabic B and Arabic ab initio

HL and SL

Many Dubai students carry Arabic as their Group 2 language alongside English A, and Dubai private schools must teach Arabic regardless of the licensed curriculum. Scheduling support for both languages in the same term needs care, because the written load overlaps.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

English support works best as defined blocks against dated components. These three modes cover almost every request we receive from Dubai families, and all of them run over live video rather than at an address in the emirate.

Component block, four to six sessions

A short run of sessions aimed at one assessed component with a deadline attached: the Individual Oral, the HL Essay, or Paper 1 technique before mocks. The block starts from the student's own draft or recorded attempt, works through the published criteria, and ends when the component is submitted or sat. This is the mode most Dubai English requests actually need, and it is the cheapest honest answer.

  • Scoped to one component with a fixed end point
  • Begins from the student's own work rather than a diagnostic test
  • Criteria explained by name with their mark allocations
  • Cost is bounded and known before the first session

Fortnightly reading and writing partnership

For students who are competent but static: a slot every two weeks through the year, each session built around one piece of the student's writing and one text they are studying at school. Between sessions the student reads and drafts; the session is spent on what the writing reveals. Slower and cheaper per month than weekly support, and better suited to a subject where improvement comes from volume of reading.

  • One piece of student writing per session, marked against criteria
  • Reading set between sessions and discussed, not summarised for them
  • Lower monthly cost than a weekly slot across two years
  • Suits DP1 students with no immediate deadline

Oral rehearsal with recording and playback

The Individual Oral is 15 minutes including five minutes of questions, and most students have never heard themselves speak for ten minutes before the day. Over video, a rehearsal can be recorded and played back so the student hears their own hesitations, their reliance on plot summary, and whether the global issue is actually being traced through both texts. The tutor does not write or supply the oral.

  • Rehearsal recorded and reviewed with the student watching
  • Timing practised to the real limits, including the question phase
  • Global issue tested for whether it genuinely spans both texts
  • No script supplied; the student's own extract choice and notes only

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a search for an IB English tutor in Dubai usually turns out to mean

Four requests account for most English enquiries from Dubai families, and they want different things. The first is an Individual Oral two or three weeks away, where the student has chosen a global issue that does not really connect their two texts. The second is a Paper 1 problem: strong readers who write about what the passage says rather than how it works. The third is the HL Essay, where a Higher Level student has 1,200 to 1,500 words and no idea how to narrow a question. The fourth is placement, where a family suspects English B was the wrong call or the right one.

None of those four is solved by general English tutoring, which is why the first conversation matters more here than in most subjects. A student who paraphrases in Paper 1 does not need more reading; they need to be shown, on their own script, the difference between a sentence about content and a sentence about craft. A student struggling with the oral does not need more content either; they need to hear themselves and count how many seconds they spent retelling plot.

The diagnosis is also what prices the work. An oral block three weeks out is four to six sessions. A Paper 1 habit that has been forming since DP1 takes a term of fortnightly work. An HL Essay needs a reader at two or three defined points rather than continuous supervision. Quoting a single weekly rate across all four requests, which is what most of this market does, overcharges the first family and underserves the second.

Where this page differs from the rest of the Dubai English cluster is that it prices by the month against components. The competitor pages in this space run between roughly 1,400 and 2,300 words, five of six publish no table at all, and three publish no price in any currency. A parent cannot plan from that.

02

Monthly budgets for IB English support in Dubai

The table below converts published hourly bands into the monthly figures a family actually commits to, and shows what each pattern buys over a DP year. Every band is attributed. None of it is an IB Gram price list: our model starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation, which is where a figure for your child comes from.

Read it against the component calendar rather than across the whole year. A family that buys a fortnightly partnership through DP1 and then two component blocks in DP2 spends less overall than one buying a weekly slot for 24 months, and typically gets more, because the blocks land where deadlines are. The expensive pattern is the one families drift into: a weekly hour booked in September out of anxiety and still running in April with no component in sight.

The in-home row is included because it is the comparison most Dubai parents are actually making. In-home visits in the emirate are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour, with the tutor's travel inside that rate, and advertised monthly in-home packages run AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions against AED 799 for eight online sessions. Set those two numbers next to each other and the travel premium stops being abstract.

One honest caveat about per-hour thinking. A ninety-minute English session usually costs less per hour than a sixty-minute one, because the tutor's preparation and switching cost is spread further, and ninety minutes is the natural length for working through a full Paper 1 attempt. For oral rehearsal, sixty minutes is plenty.

03

The four assessed components, with their published weightings

English A is assessed through the same components on both routes, Language and Literature and Literature, with the Higher Level course adding one. Knowing the weightings changes where a family spends, because the components are not equally expensive to improve.

At Standard Level on either route, Paper 1 is worth 35%, Paper 2 is worth 35% and the Individual Oral is worth 30%. At Higher Level, Paper 1 stays at 35%, Paper 2 falls to 25%, the Individual Oral falls to 20% and the HL Essay takes 20%. The learner portfolio runs throughout and is not separately assessed, though it is where the material for the oral and the essay is generated.

Paper 1 is the largest component on every route and level, and it is also the one most improvable by technique. It presents unseen passages with a guiding question, and the marks reward analysis of how the text works rather than what it says. Students who improve here usually do so by learning to quote shorter and comment longer, and by actually answering the guiding question instead of writing a general appreciation.

The Individual Oral is where Dubai students most often under-prepare, because it looks like the informal component and is not. Fifteen minutes, including five minutes of questions, tracing a global issue through one literary and one non-literary text on Language and Literature, or two literary works on Literature. Students who choose a global issue that genuinely connects both extracts do well; students who choose a fashionable issue and bolt it onto two unrelated texts spend ten minutes explaining the connection and never analyse anything.

04

Preparing the Individual Oral when the student has never heard themselves speak

  • Rehearse to the real clock, including the five-minute question phase
  • Record and watch it back; self-diagnosis beats being told
  • Test the global issue against specific lines in both extracts before preparing
  • Plan the second text in by minute four, not minute eight
  • Practise answering unexpected questions rather than rehearsing a monologue
  • Nothing is scripted or supplied; the notes and extracts are the student's own

The Individual Oral fails for mechanical reasons more than intellectual ones. Ten minutes of continuous analytical speech is a physical skill, and most DP students have never attempted it. They have answered questions in class for ninety seconds at a time. Asked for ten minutes, they fill the space with plot, because plot is the thing there is always more of.

The fix is rehearsal with playback, and it is one of the few places where video delivery is straightforwardly better than a tutor in the room. The student speaks, the session is recorded, and then they watch themselves. They count, out loud, how many seconds went on retelling. They notice that the second text appeared at minute eight. They hear the four seconds of silence they thought was thirty. None of that lands when a tutor simply reports it back to them.

The second fix is testing the global issue properly before any preparation begins. A global issue has to be significant, transnational and demonstrable in a specific way in both chosen extracts. Students pick an issue they care about and then search for it in their texts, which is the wrong order. A tutor can ask, for each text, which three lines in this extract actually show this issue, and if the student cannot answer for one of them, the issue needs changing while there is still time.

The boundary here is the same as for all IB internal work. A tutor can teach the criteria, test the global issue, time the rehearsal, play back the recording and ask questions that expose a weak claim. A tutor cannot write the oral, supply the notes the student takes in, or script sentences for them to memorise. The outline is the student's, the extract choice is the student's, and the words on the day are the student's.

05

Paper 1 and Paper 2: the two habits that cost Dubai candidates most

  • Paper 1: one analytical move repeated, not a tour of the passage
  • Underline test: how many sentences name a writer's choice and its effect?
  • Paper 2: compare inside paragraphs, not in two consecutive halves
  • Answer the question asked, not the one the student revised for
  • Map studied works against question types before the mock window
  • Quote short, comment long; long quotations buy no marks

Paper 1 rewards one specific move, repeated: identify a choice the writer made, state its effect, and connect that effect to the guiding question. Candidates who do that twelve times in 75 minutes score well. Candidates who narrate the passage, however elegantly, do not. The habit is learnable in a term and almost never learns itself, because nothing in a student's earlier education penalised fluent summary.

The diagnostic is quick. Take a student's Paper 1 attempt and underline every sentence that contains the words how, effect, choice, creates or positions. If fewer than a third of their sentences survive, the problem is register, not reading. That exercise takes four minutes and is more useful than any amount of discussion about whether the student enjoys reading.

Paper 2 fails differently. It asks for a comparison of two studied works against an unseen question, and the characteristic weak answer is two essays bolted together: five paragraphs on the first text, five on the second, and a conclusion asserting that both are interesting. Real comparison happens inside paragraphs, where a point is made about one work and immediately tested against the other. That structural change is worth a band on its own and takes two sessions to install.

The other Paper 2 problem is text selection. Students prepare the works they liked rather than the works that answer a range of questions, and then meet a question about structure having only prepared character. A tutor can map which studied works serve which likely question types, which is planning rather than content teaching and takes one session.

06

Language and Literature or Literature: choosing the right English A route

The route is chosen in Year 11 and it is not reversible late. Both courses are English A, both carry the same component structure and weightings, and both are accepted identically by universities. What differs is the text diet, and that difference suits different students.

Language and Literature studies literary and non-literary texts together: advertisements, speeches, photographs, opinion columns alongside novels and plays. Paper 1 presents one literary and one non-literary passage. Students who enjoy taking apart how a public text manipulates an audience usually thrive. Students who find non-literary analysis mechanical can struggle, because half of Paper 1 is not available to them.

Literature studies literary works only, across forms, periods and places in translation. Paper 1 offers two unseen literary passages. The course rewards sustained close reading and a tolerance for ambiguity, and it penalises students who want a text to mean one checkable thing. Dubai schools do not all offer both routes, and option blocks sometimes decide the matter before the student does.

The practical advice is to look at a student's IGCSE or MYP work rather than their preferences. A student whose strongest writing was about a persuasive text should think hard before choosing Literature. A student who wrote well about a poem and flatly about a leaflet should think hard before choosing Language and Literature. Either way, the choice should be tested against a sample Paper 1 from each route, which takes one session and prevents two years of friction.

07

The HL Essay, the learner portfolio and the honesty line

The HL Essay is 1,200 to 1,500 words on one text studied during the course, built from the student's own line of inquiry, and it is worth 20% of the Higher Level grade. The word limit is the whole difficulty. A question broad enough to feel interesting cannot be answered in 1,400 words, and students default to breadth because narrowing feels like giving something up.

The useful intervention is early and small: take the student's proposed question and ask how many paragraphs it needs. If the honest answer is nine, the question is wrong. A question that needs four substantial paragraphs is the right size, and arriving at one usually means discarding two days of enthusiastic thinking, which is why a reader from outside the family helps.

The learner portfolio is where the raw material for both the essay and the oral is supposed to live, and in practice it is the most neglected part of the course because nothing is marked. Students who keep it properly arrive at the HL Essay with eight possible lines of inquiry and choose one. Students who did not keep it arrive with nothing and invent a question under pressure. A tutor can insist on the portfolio being used, which sounds trivial and is the difference between two very different Decembers.

The boundary is unambiguous and worth stating because parts of this market cross it. A tutor may teach the assessment criteria, discuss the scope of a proposed question, read a draft the student wrote and respond with questions and criteria references, and point out where an argument has stopped being supported. A tutor may not write any part of the essay, rewrite a paragraph into better prose, or supply sentences. Writing a student's coursework is malpractice under IB rules, and the consequence lands on the candidate.

08

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside English A in Dubai

This is the part of a Dubai English timetable that pages written outside the UAE miss entirely. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements had to be in place by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. A DP student doing English A is also carrying those subjects.

The organisational rules are specific. KHDA requires separate classes by group for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs and that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; Social Studies for Arab students is taught primarily in Arabic; non-Arab students take Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies in the language of the school's licensed curriculum.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools are also required to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, and for the mandatory UAE subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited.

Why this belongs on an English page: it explains the timetable pressure a Dubai DP student is under, and it constrains what any tutor can legitimately offer. The mandatory subjects are not a space where a private tutor can bring in their own material. For English A, the practical consequence is that the hours available for reading and drafting are fewer than a family outside the UAE would assume, which is another argument for short component blocks over a standing weekly commitment.

09

Online English tuition against the in-home market in Dubai

This comparison is the decision most Dubai families are actually making, so it is worth putting in a table rather than arguing. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. What follows describes the market honestly and then says what we do.

For English specifically, the balance tips further towards video than it does for most subjects, for three concrete reasons. Oral rehearsal benefits from recording and playback, which is native to a video session and awkward in a living room. Textual analysis happens on a shared screen where both parties annotate the same passage, which is better than two people reading one printed sheet. And the English A specialist pool, split across two routes and two levels, is thin in any single Dubai community.

The honest case for in-home tutoring still exists. Younger students focus better with an adult physically present. Technology failures do not happen. Some students read a tutor's reaction more accurately in person, which matters for a subject where a raised eyebrow is feedback. For a DP English candidate working on component technique, those advantages rarely outweigh getting the right reader.

The test to apply to any provider, ours included, is to ask which English A route the tutor has taught most recently, at which level, and how they would respond to a Paper 1 script that paraphrases. Somebody who can answer precisely is worth more than somebody nearby, and video means that is not a trade-off.

Where we tutor

Where Dubai English requests come from, and what each cluster asks for

English enquiries reach us from across the emirate, and the request differs by community in ways that are not about affluence. What changes is the school's curriculum mix, the proportion of students arriving mid-programme, and how much of the evening is already committed.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Jumeirah Village Triangle

High-density, fast-growing, with children from one household often at three different schools. English requests here frequently involve a student who has changed school mid-DP and is studying a different set of texts from the one they started with.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Sports City

Villa communities built around specific schools, where the school-run shapes the evening. English blocks here are usually booked at 6pm or later, after sport, and the Individual Oral practice is often the trigger for the first enquiry.

Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh

A concentrated, internationally mobile population with high mid-year arrival rates. The characteristic English problem is a student joining DP1 in January having already missed a studied work, which needs catch-up on a specific text rather than general support.

The Greens, The Views and Barsha Heights

Apartment living close to several Diploma Programme schools, with short commutes and relatively free early evenings. Weekday 5pm sessions are easy here, which suits the short, intensive component blocks English actually needs.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Newer family communities at some distance from the emirate's older school corridor, so travelling tutors carry the longest drives and quote accordingly. The gap between online and in-home market rates is most visible from addresses like these.

Al Qusais and Muhaisnah

A large Indian and British curriculum population with fewer Diploma Programme places nearby. English enquiries from here often come from families comparing the DP with A Levels and wanting to know how the written components differ before committing to a route.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several universities and schools, with many parents working in education or technology. Requests tend to be specific and component-named, frequently about the HL Essay, which suggests the parent has already read the subject guide.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Established Dubai Diploma Programme schools

The schools that have run the DP longest in the emirate, with settled option blocks and both English A routes usually available. Students we support from these schools tend to arrive with a clear diagnosis from their teacher and want targeted component work rather than general English help.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Deira International School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai

Newer IB and dual-pathway schools

Schools that added the Diploma Programme more recently or run it alongside A Levels, where option blocks can be tighter and a single English A route may be offered rather than both. Enquiries here often start with whether Literature or Language and Literature is the better fit.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Uptown International School
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Greenfield International School

British-curriculum schools feeding English A requests

Schools running IGCSE and A Level whose students sometimes transfer into the Diploma Programme, or whose families are weighing the two routes. The English conversation with these students is usually about the move from a set-text examination to unseen textual analysis.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai College
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton School Dubai

Schools are named to describe the Dubai IB landscape only; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and current programme and subject availability should be confirmed with the school and with KHDA.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked piece of English writing

A returned Paper 1 attempt, a class essay with the teacher's annotations, or an HL Essay proposal. Four minutes with a real script tells a tutor whether the problem is register, structure or reading, which no questionnaire reliably does.

  2. 02

Name the component and its date

Individual Oral, Paper 1, Paper 2 or HL Essay, and the deadline the school has set. That pair of facts decides whether this is a five-session block, a fortnightly partnership or oral rehearsal, and therefore what it should cost.

  3. 03

Take the free trial as a working session

The matched tutor reads the script with the student, names the pattern and says what the first sessions would address. There is no charge and no obligation, and a family that decides the fit is wrong has lost nothing but an hour.

  4. 04

Book the block, not the year

Sessions are scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the Dubai school day, mandatory subject lessons, activities and prayer times, and the block ends when the component is submitted or sat. Extending is a decision made with evidence rather than a default.

  5. 05

    Check progress against the criteria

Improvement in English is visible in specific places: analytical sentences per paragraph, seconds of plot summary in a rehearsal, words spent before the first claim in an essay. Those are the measures we review, not an impression of confidence.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced by the month against components

English is used in blocks, so this page budgets in months and names what each pattern buys. Three of the main competitors in this cluster publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which no Dubai family transacts in.

Weightings stated for both routes

Paper 1 at 35%, Paper 2 at 35% SL and 25% HL, the Individual Oral at 30% SL and 20% HL, the HL Essay at 20%. A parent who knows those numbers can judge whether a tutoring plan is aimed at the right component.

Oral work done with recording and playback

The Individual Oral is 15 minutes including questions, and the single fastest improvement comes from the student watching themselves. Video delivery makes that routine rather than awkward, and no script is written for them.

A clean line on the HL Essay

A tutor teaches criteria, questions scope and reads the student's own draft. Nobody writes a paragraph or supplies prose. Writing assessed coursework is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the candidate, not the provider.

Dubai timetable realities included

Mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons sit inside every Dubai private school week under KHDA requirements. That shortens the hours available for reading and drafting, and a plan that ignores it will not survive contact with the term.

Delivery stated without ambiguity

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are not part of our UAE service and exist only in India, so nothing here should leave a family expecting someone at a Dubai address.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does IB English tutoring cost per month in Dubai?+

Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for one weekly hour give AED 240 to 600 for a budget tutor, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Advertised packages in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. English is usually bought in component blocks rather than monthly, so a five-session oral block is often the whole purchase. Those figures are published by the providers named and read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

How long is the IB Individual Oral and how is it marked?+

It runs 15 minutes, made up of a ten-minute presentation and five minutes of questions from the teacher. The student traces a global issue through two texts: one literary and one non-literary on Language and Literature, or two literary works on Literature. It is worth 30% of the grade at Standard Level and 20% at Higher Level. Marks are lost mainly through plot retelling, through a global issue that only genuinely appears in one of the two texts, and through the second text arriving too late in the ten minutes to be analysed properly.

Can a tutor help my child prepare the IB HL Essay?+

Within a clear boundary, yes. A tutor can explain the assessment criteria, discuss whether a proposed line of inquiry is narrow enough for 1,200 to 1,500 words, read a draft the student wrote and respond with questions and criteria references, and point out where an argument has stopped being supported by the text. A tutor cannot write any part of the essay, rewrite a paragraph into better prose or supply sentences. Producing a student's coursework is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the candidate, so the line is worth insisting on.

Should my child take English A Language and Literature or English A Literature?+

Both are English A, both share the same components and weightings, and universities treat them identically. Language and Literature studies literary and non-literary texts together, so Paper 1 presents one of each, and it suits students who enjoy dismantling how public texts persuade. Literature studies literary works only, including works in translation, and rewards sustained close reading and tolerance of ambiguity. Decide from evidence rather than preference: look at whether the student's strongest previous writing was about a poem or about a persuasive text, and test a sample Paper 1 from each route.

Why is my child a strong reader but a weak Paper 1 candidate?+

Because Paper 1 rewards one move that strong readers often skip: naming a choice the writer made, stating its effect, and tying that effect to the guiding question. Fluent summary reads well and scores badly. A quick diagnostic is to underline every sentence in their script containing how, effect, choice, creates or positions; if fewer than a third survive, the problem is register rather than comprehension. That habit is learnable in a term and rarely corrects itself, because nothing in earlier schooling penalised elegant retelling.

Does anyone visit our home in Dubai for English lessons?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we provide only in India. English support for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school day. The in-home market does exist here and is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the rate. For English in particular, video is often better: oral rehearsals can be recorded and played back, and an unseen passage can be annotated by both people on one shared screen.

How many sessions does an Individual Oral block usually take?+

Four to six, if the block starts two or three weeks before the oral. The first session tests whether the chosen global issue genuinely appears in both extracts, which is where most orals are won or lost. The middle sessions are rehearsal with recording and playback, timed to the real limits including the question phase. The last is a full run-through with unexpected questions. A student who has never spoken analytically for ten minutes needs the rehearsal more than the content, and that is physical practice rather than teaching.

What is the learner portfolio for if it is not marked?+

It is the raw material store for the components that are marked. Across both years, a student records readings, responses and emerging ideas, and the Individual Oral and the HL Essay are supposed to grow out of it. Because nothing in the portfolio is itself assessed, it is the most neglected part of the course. Students who keep it properly arrive at the HL Essay with several possible lines of inquiry and choose the best. Students who did not invent a question under deadline pressure, which is visible in the final mark.

My child joined a Dubai IB school mid-year and has missed a studied text. What now?+

This is common in communities with high mid-year arrival rates, and it is a catch-up problem on a specific work rather than a general English problem. The sensible shape is a short block on the missed text: read it properly, build a set of usable close-reading notes, and map it against the question types Paper 2 tends to ask so the student is not carrying a text they cannot write about. Confirm with the school's DP coordinator which works are actually being examined, because schools vary, and plan the block around that list.

Does Paper 2 really need two texts compared, or can my child write about one?+

Two, genuinely compared. Paper 2 asks for a comparison of two studied works against an unseen question, and the characteristic weak script is two essays bolted together: several paragraphs on the first work, several on the second, and a conclusion asserting both are interesting. Real comparison happens inside paragraphs, where a point about one work is immediately tested against the other. That structural change is usually worth a band and takes about two sessions to install, which makes it one of the better-value interventions in the subject.

How do mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education lessons affect an English A timetable in Dubai?+

They take real hours. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requirements in place from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and KHDA advises any mandatory subject lesson should last at least 25 minutes. For an English A candidate that means fewer free periods for reading and drafting than a family outside the UAE would assume, which is an argument for short component blocks rather than an open-ended weekly commitment.

Is English B an easier route than English A for a Dubai student?+

It is a different route, not an easier one, and placement should be made by the school on evidence of language proficiency. English B is the language acquisition course, assessed through reading, listening, writing and an individual oral based on a visual stimulus at Standard Level or a literary extract at Higher Level. A student placed in English B who is really an English A candidate will be bored and may be disadvantaged in university applications. A student placed in English A who needed English B will struggle with unseen literary analysis. Query a placement early, not in DP2.

When in the two years is English tutoring most worth buying?+

At three points. Early in DP1, a short block on writing under time pressure converts MYP or IGCSE habits into DP ones, which is cheap and prevents a term of frustration. Two to three weeks before the Individual Oral, a rehearsal block delivers more marks per hour than anything else in the subject. And in the autumn of DP2, a reader for the HL Essay question at the point of narrowing it. A standing weekly hour booked in September out of anxiety and still running in April is the expensive pattern.

Do tutors in the UAE need a permit to teach English privately?+

Yes. Any individual providing private tuition in the UAE needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time via its smart app, website and e-services system, and states that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

What happens if no English A specialist is free when we need one?+

We say so rather than substituting quietly. English A splits across two routes and two levels, and the pool for a specific component in a specific fortnight is narrower than families expect, particularly in the weeks before oral season. The options are a start date in the future, a tutor who covers the level but not that exact route for interim work, or a recommendation to wait until after the mock window. Families should know which of those is being offered. Concealed substitution is the failure mode worth watching for across this market.

Price the component, not the year

Send one marked piece of English writing, name the component and its deadline, and take a free trial session. The tutor will read the script with your child, name the pattern costing marks, and say how many sessions the component realistically needs. Most Dubai English requests turn out to be a four to six session block rather than a two-year commitment, and saying so is cheaper for you than it is for us. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Every AED band on this page is published by the provider named and was read in October 2026.
