Cambridge IGCSE English Literature 0475 Home Tutor in Dubai

Parents searching for a Cambridge IGCSE English Literature 0475 home tutor in Dubai are usually looking at one specific problem: a child who reads the set texts, enjoys them, and still writes answers that score in the middle bands. IB Gram matches that child to a literature specialist who has taught the exact poems, novel and play on their school's entry, and every lesson runs one-to-one over live video rather than at a Dubai address. The first lesson is free and no card details are taken.

  • Every UAE lesson runs one-to-one online over live video
  • Tutors matched to your child's actual set texts, not a generic reading list
  • Essays returned marked against Cambridge's published assessment objectives
  • Free trial lesson first, no card details, no obligation to continue

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What a 0475 home tutor is being asked to fix

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English carries the syllabus code 0475, and it is not the same subject as First Language English 0500. That distinction matters more than parents expect. A child can hold a grade 7 in 0500, write fluent and well-organised prose, and still sit in the lower bands of 0475, because the two syllabuses reward different things. First Language English rewards clear communication and controlled writing. Literature in English rewards a response to the way a particular writer has built a particular text, supported by close reference to the words on the page.

That is the gap most Dubai families are trying to close when they look for a home tutor. The school has set the texts, the class has read them, the child can summarise the plot of the novel in detail, and the essays come back with comments like 'more analysis needed' or 'you are retelling the story'. Neither comment tells a fifteen-year-old what to do differently on Saturday morning. A literature specialist can, because the instruction is concrete: stop explaining what happens, start explaining what the writer has done to make it land, and anchor every claim in a quoted phrase short enough to analyse.

The second thing a 0475 tutor is asked to fix is timing. The poetry and prose paper gives ninety minutes for two full essays, which is forty-five minutes each including planning and reading the extract. Students who write beautifully in three hours at home collapse under that clock. Nothing about that is a comprehension problem. It is a drafting-speed problem, and it responds to drilling: plan in five minutes, write four developed paragraphs, keep one eye on the question's exact wording, stop.

The home-tutor part of the search deserves a straight answer. In-home tuition is widely available in Dubai and the market rate reflects the travel it involves, with published rates from local providers running from around AED 180 to AED 500 an hour depending on experience and distance. IB Gram does not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. Dubai lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and for a literature subject that is a genuine advantage rather than a compromise.

The reason is the shared screen. Close reading is an annotation activity. On video the tutor and the student look at the same poem, highlight the same line, and the annotated copy is saved and sent afterwards, so revision in April is built on the actual marks made in November. A tutor sitting beside a student with a paperback cannot leave that artefact behind. The wider pool matters too: your child's set text might be a play taught by four teachers within a twenty-minute drive of your villa, or by forty specialists available over video.

At a glance

  • 0475 is Literature in English; 0500 is First Language English. Different syllabus, different marking.
  • All four assessment objectives carry equal weight, so knowledge alone caps a grade.
  • Paper 1 allows about forty-five minutes per essay, planning included.
  • Dubai lessons are online one-to-one; in-home visits are an India-only service.
  • Matching starts from your child's set texts and the school's chosen route.
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Cambridge runs Literature in English as part of a stage structure, and Dubai schools enter students at the point their own curriculum maps to. These are the three stages a 0475 candidate passes through, with what each one means for a Dubai family specifically.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary English

The three years before an IGCSE entry, where literary reading is taught through extracts rather than whole set texts. Students meet poetry and short prose, learn to quote, and start writing comparative paragraphs. Checkpoint tests sit at the end of this stage and are the first external signal of whether a child reads for technique or only for plot.

Dubai's British-curriculum schools run this stage as Years 7 to 9 and use it to stream for the IGCSE option block. A child who leaves Year 9 able to retell a story but not comment on how it is told usually meets trouble in Year 10, and this is the cheapest point to intervene. Cambridge sits Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, so there is a dated external reference before any IGCSE commitment is made.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Upper Secondary: IGCSE Literature in English 0475

The two-year course that ends in the papers your child sits. Schools choose the set texts and the component route, and that choice shapes everything a tutor does. Poetry, prose and drama are studied as whole texts, with questions set either on a printed passage or as a general essay on the whole work.

In Dubai this course almost always runs alongside First Language English 0500, so a literature-weak student is frequently a strong writer whose marks are being held back by one skill. KHDA-inspected British schools dominate private enrolment in the emirate, and most of them enter the June series. Your child's school decides the texts; ask the head of English for the exact editions before the first tutoring session is booked.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level English Literature

The post-16 continuation, where unseen criticism and wider reading matter far more than memorised quotations. Students who reached the top bands at IGCSE by learning a tutor's model answers usually struggle here, because the AS papers test independent judgement on texts they have not been coached through.

Dubai students splitting towards A Level or the IB Diploma after Year 11 face this fork in February of Year 11, before results exist. A 0475 candidate aiming at English Literature A Level or IB English A should be reading beyond the set list by the spring of Year 11. Tutors working with Dubai families often use the gap between the last paper and September to start that reading rather than leaving it to Year 12.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Literature rarely arrives alone. These are the Cambridge subjects most often taken alongside 0475 in Dubai schools, with the point in each where marks are typically lost. A single tutor sometimes covers two of them; more often a second specialist is the honest answer.

Literature in English (0475)

Core syllabus, two routes

Poetry, prose and drama assessed by closed-book essays on a printed passage or on the whole text. Marks come from how precisely a student handles the writer's language, structure and form, not from how much of the plot they recall.

First Language English (0500)

Extended entry

Reading comprehension, directed writing and composition. Shares a timetable and a teacher with literature at most Dubai schools, which is why a student can be strong in one and mid-band in the other without anyone noticing the cause.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

The route many Dubai students take instead of 0500. A student on ESL who also sits 0475 carries a heavier load than the timetable suggests, because literature essays assume first-language range of expression.

History (0470 / 0977)

Core and Extended

Source analysis here and passage analysis in literature are the same underlying skill in different clothes. Students who can evaluate a source's purpose often transfer quickly to commenting on a poet's choices once the vocabulary is given to them.

Geography (0460)

Core and Extended

Case-study recall and structured extended answers. The paper rewards specificity in the same way literature does, and students who write vaguely in one subject usually write vaguely in both.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

Research, argument and reflection, assessed through written work and a team project. Shares the critical-reading demand with literature and is often taken by the same Dubai students.

Drama (0411)

Single tier

Practical and written assessment of performance texts. A drama student reads a play as a thing to be staged, which is exactly the lens the 0475 drama questions reward and the one most literature candidates never take.

Business Studies (0450)

Core and Extended

Applied case analysis under time pressure. Nothing literary about it, but the same essay-discipline work transfers: answer the question asked, use the evidence in front of you, finish inside the clock.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Included here because option blocks collide. A Dubai student taking both 0580 Extended and 0475 often needs the tutoring hours split across subjects, and that trade-off is better made deliberately than by accident in March.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier

The common pairing for students heading towards technical A Levels while keeping literature for breadth. Two very different kinds of revision; planning the week around both is half the work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families run 0475 support. The choice usually comes down to how far into Year 11 you are and whether the problem is understanding the text or writing about it under time pressure.

Weekly one-to-one over live video

A 60-minute session each week, on a fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time, following the school's own text order rather than a parallel syllabus. The student brings the week's class work; the tutor works on the piece of it that is costing marks.

  • Same tutor, same slot, annotated text saved after each lesson
  • Follows the school's sequence so nothing is taught twice
  • Rescheduling without the travel penalty a visiting tutor carries
  • Short written note to parents every second session

The marked-essay cycle

A fortnightly rhythm built around writing rather than talking. The student writes one timed essay, the tutor marks it against the published assessment objectives, and the following session is spent only on the two or three habits that cost the most marks in that script.

  • One timed essay per cycle, written to the real clock
  • Feedback keyed to assessment objectives, not general comments
  • A rewrite of one paragraph, not of the whole essay
  • A running list of recurring faults the student can self-check

Pre-series intensive block

A short, dense block of sessions in the weeks before the exam window, aimed at students who understand the texts but cannot finish the paper. Content teaching stops; the entire block is planning speed, paragraph construction and question-wording discipline.

  • Two or three sessions a week for four to six weeks
  • Past-paper questions attempted under full timing
  • Priority on the component carrying the larger weighting
  • Honest advice when a block is not the right spend

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The search term, answered literally

A Cambridge IGCSE English Literature 0475 home tutor in Dubai, in the sense parents mean when they type it, is a specialist who works one-to-one with a Year 10 or Year 11 student on the specific poems, novel and play that student's school has entered for. The phrase 'home tutor' in this market has come to mean private one-to-one rather than literally in-the-house, and most families who use it are describing the format, not the postcode. That matters, because the two things have separated over the last few years.

IB Gram delivers this work online. Lessons run over live video, one-to-one, on a fixed weekly slot set to Gulf Standard Time, and we do not send a tutor to a Dubai address at all; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Saying that plainly at the top of the page is more useful than burying it, because the alternative is a parent booking a trial expecting a doorbell.

What a family gets instead is a specialist chosen from a national pool rather than a local one. Literature is the subject where that trade is most obviously worth making. A maths tutor can be excellent without knowing which textbook a school uses. A literature tutor who has not taught your child's set play is starting the term three weeks behind, rereading a text the student has already finished, and the first month of sessions goes on the tutor's reading rather than the student's writing.

The rest of this page is the detail behind that claim: what the 0475 components actually demand, where the marks leak, what in-home and online tuition cost in this emirate, what a tutor is allowed to do with a draft essay, and how the entry calendar constrains all of it.

02

Which 0475 route has your child's school entered?

Cambridge offers Literature in English through more than one component combination, and schools choose. Every candidate sits the poetry and prose paper. After that, a school either enters its students for a single closed-book drama paper or splits the remaining half of the course between a shorter open-text drama paper and an unseen paper. The two routes make very different demands, and a tutor who assumes the wrong one will drill the wrong skill for a term.

The open-text route is kinder to students with weak memories for quotation, because the play is in front of them. It is harsher on students who cannot select, since having the text available tempts a candidate into copying out long passages that earn nothing. The unseen paper, where it applies, cannot be revised by rereading set texts at all. It is a trainable skill with a method, but the method has to be taught deliberately and practised on material the student has never seen.

Before the first session, ask the head of English three questions: which components are we entered for, which editions of the set texts are we using, and are we sitting June or November. Those three answers determine the whole plan. The table below gives the shape of each component so you can read the school's answer properly; always confirm the current structure and timings against the Cambridge 0475 syllabus for your child's exam series, because component detail is revised between syllabus cycles.

One practical note on weighting. The poetry and prose paper carries half the qualification on either route. If a student has limited tutoring hours, that paper is where they go first, regardless of which text the class happens to be reading this month.

Set texts are the reason local matching fails

  • Set texts vary by school and change between cohorts
  • A tutor new to the text spends the first weeks reading, not teaching
  • Match on text, then level, then available slot
  • Beware generic essay templates built on texts your child does not sit

Every Dubai school picks its own 0475 texts from the Cambridge list, and the lists differ from school to school and from year to year. Two Year 11 students living in the same villa compound can be studying different plays, different novels and different poetry selections. This is the single biggest practical difference between literature and every other IGCSE subject, and it is the reason geographic matching produces weak results.

Consider what a tutor needs to be genuinely useful on a set play. They need to know the text closely enough to recognise, from a two-line quotation, where it sits and what came before. They need to know which scenes the examiners' passage-based questions tend to favour and which ones students over-prepare. They need to have marked real answers on that text and seen what a mid-band response looks like versus a strong one. None of that comes from reading the play over a weekend.

Within a twenty-minute drive of any given Dubai community, the number of available tutors who have actually taught your child's exact combination of texts is small, and it is smaller again if you want them free at 5pm on a Tuesday. Across a national online pool, specialists who have taught that combination repeatedly are findable. We match on text first, then on level, then on slot, and we say so when the match is imperfect rather than sending whoever is nearest.

There is a related trap worth naming. Some tutors solve the set-text problem by teaching their own favourite texts and generic essay templates instead. The student ends up with a polished answer about a text they are not being examined on, and a template that collapses the moment a question asks something slightly different. Ask any prospective tutor which of your child's texts they have taught, and to which year groups.

04

Where 0475 marks actually go missing

The four assessment objectives in 0475 carry equal weight: knowing the text, understanding its meanings and contexts, recognising the effects of a writer's language, structure and form, and communicating a personal informed response. That equality is the whole story of mid-band marks in Dubai schools. A student who knows the text thoroughly has banked one quarter of what is available and often writes as if that were the task.

In marked scripts the pattern repeats. A paragraph opens with a confident claim about a character, offers four lines of plot as evidence, quotes a sentence without commenting on a single word of it, and closes by restating the claim. Everything in that paragraph is accurate. Very little of it is rewarded. The fix is mechanical before it is intellectual: shorten the quotation to the few words doing the work, then write two sentences about those words specifically, then connect that effect to the question asked.

The second recurring loss is the general essay question. Students choose it believing it is easier because there is no passage to decode, then write an answer that drifts across the whole text without ever selecting evidence. Passage-based questions are usually the safer choice for a student under time pressure, precisely because the material is in front of them and the task is bounded. That is a strategy decision worth making in advance, not in the exam hall.

The third is drama treated as prose. A play is written to be staged, and marks sit in what an audience sees and hears: an entrance, a silence, a character left alone on stage, a line delivered to one person while another listens. Students who have only read the play as a book never mention any of it. Teaching a student to ask 'what would the audience notice here' moves answers more quickly than any amount of extra reading.

What in-home literature tuition costs in Dubai, and what travel adds to it

Dubai parents rarely get a straight price from tutoring websites. Of the competitor pages reviewed for this market in October 2026, three published no price at all and two quoted in US dollars, a currency no Dubai family pays a tutor in. The figures below are market rates in AED, each attributed to the provider or rate survey that published it. They are not IB Gram's price list, and nothing here is a quote.

The pattern across sources is consistent. Online one-to-one with a qualified subject teacher sits in the middle, in-home one-to-one carries a clear premium, and that premium is travel. A tutor driving from Al Barsha to Arabian Ranches for a 5pm lesson has given up ninety minutes of their working day for sixty minutes of paid work, and the rate reflects it. Nobody is overcharging; the economics are simply what they are.

For literature specifically there is a second cost that never appears on a rate card: the cost of a mismatch. A cheaper tutor who has not taught your child's set texts will spend paid hours reading them. At AED 200 an hour, three sessions of catch-up is AED 600 spent on the tutor's preparation. That is the real comparison to make, rather than the headline hourly figure.

IB Gram's own model is a free first lesson with the matched tutor, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue, followed by a quoted plan once the tutor has seen a piece of the student's writing. If the plan does not look worth it after the trial, nothing has been spent. We publish the market bands above so that the quote arrives in context rather than in a vacuum.

Online versus in-home for a text-based subject

The usual argument for in-home tuition is attention: a tutor in the room, no screen, no distractions. For some subjects and some students that case is strong. For closed-book literature essay work it is weaker than it looks, and the reason is that almost everything a literature tutor does is done to a document.

Annotation is the clearest example. A tutor marking a poem live on a shared screen produces a file the student keeps, and six months later that file is the revision material. The same lesson conducted over a paperback leaves pencil marks in a book that the student may or may not open again, and no record for the parent. Essay feedback behaves the same way: comments typed into a script are searchable, and the student can see whether the same fault appears in essay one and essay four.

Scheduling is the other decisive factor in Dubai specifically. Secondary students in Mirdif or Al Warqa attending schools on the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor are frequently not home before 4:30pm, and a tutor driving in across the same traffic is subject to the same delays. Online, a 7:15pm slot is a 7:15pm slot. When a family travels during Eid or the summer, the lesson follows them rather than stopping.

None of this makes in-home tuition a bad product. It makes it a different one, with a real premium attached and a smaller pool behind it. The table sets out the comparison honestly, including the places where a visiting tutor genuinely has the edge.

07

What a tutor may and may not do with your child's essay

This matters more in English than in any other subject, because the deliverable is writing and the line between coaching and authorship is easy to blur. The rule we work to is simple: the words that go to Cambridge must be the student's own. A tutor teaches, questions, models on a different text, marks, and explains why a paragraph underperforms. A tutor does not rewrite a student's paragraph into the version they would have written.

In practice that means feedback is given as instruction rather than as replacement text. Instead of supplying a better opening sentence, a tutor shows why the existing one delays the argument, demonstrates the move on an unrelated extract, and sends the student back to redraft their own. It is slower for one essay and considerably faster across a term, because the student can do it again without help.

Two related boundaries are worth stating. We do not supply Cambridge syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; those belong to Cambridge, and a tutor's job is to point to the official source and work from it legitimately. And no tutor can promise a grade. Band descriptors are applied by examiners to a script written on one morning, and anyone offering certainty about that outcome is selling something they cannot deliver.

For families coming from an essay-writing service, the difference will feel stark at first. It is also the only version of this work that is safe for the student. Submitted work that is not a candidate's own is a malpractice matter with consequences that outlast any single grade.

08

Entries, series and the calendar read backwards

Cambridge runs IGCSE exams in a June series and a November series, and the entry deadlines sit months before the papers. The lead time is easiest to see if you lay a year out in order: the final entry closes and fixes the components, the school submits forecast grades once there is enough marked work to make one honest, the papers sit inside the window Cambridge sets for the centre's administrative zone, and results follow on Cambridge International Direct a few weeks later. For a June sitting the entry closes in the spring; for a November sitting it closes over the summer. Cambridge does not publish one national cut-off a parent can diarise, because the six zones are timetabled separately, so the date that binds a Dubai candidate is the one printed on the centre's statement of entry. Different series carry different dates, but the shape is the same everywhere, and the deadline a Dubai family can actually miss is the school's internal one, which sits earlier still.

There is an administrative detail most parents never hear about and every exams officer worries about. Cambridge allocates each centre to one of six administrative zones, publishes a separate timetable version for each, and states that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. If your child is revising from a timetable found online rather than the one the school issued, that is worth correcting today.

Read backwards from the exam window, a 0475 plan has a natural shape. Texts finished and annotated by the end of term one of Year 11. Full past papers under timing from February. The unseen component, where the school's route includes it, practised weekly from January rather than crammed in April, because it is a skill rather than a body of content. Mock results read in February as diagnostic information, not as a verdict.

November entries exist and are used, most often by students who missed a series through illness or who want one more attempt at a single subject. Pearson Edexcel runs an equivalent November series for its International GCSEs; its November 2026 timetable ran to 19 November 2026, with its November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026. Confirm every date against the board's live timetable page and your child's school, because provisional timetables are revised.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities we support 0475 students in

These notes are about the school run and the clock, because that is what decides whether a 7pm session is realistic. Online delivery removes the tutor's travel from the equation, which in several of these communities is the difference between two sessions a week and one.

Jumeirah

Dense with long-established British schools and a short school run, so students here often finish the day early enough for a 4:30pm start. The constraint is usually co-curricular commitments rather than traffic.

Umm Suqeim

Villa community feeding several Jumeirah and Al Barsha schools. Families frequently run two children on different exam years, and staggered online slots solve a problem a visiting tutor cannot.

Al Barsha

Several large British-curriculum schools within the community itself, which means a dense local tutor market for maths and science and a thin one for set-text literature specialists.

Mirdif

A long cross-city commute for students at schools on the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor, with arrivals home after 4:30pm on most days. Evening slots after 7pm work far better here.

Dubai Marina

Apartment living with shared study space at a premium. Headphones and a laptop in a bedroom are enough for an online literature lesson, where a visiting tutor would need a table nobody has free.

Arabian Ranches

Villa community with a school inside it and a 25 to 40 minute drive to most others. In-home tuition here carries real travel cost, which is visible in what local providers quote.

The Springs and The Meadows

Family communities with Year 10 and Year 11 cohorts spread across four or five different schools, so set texts differ house by house. Matching by text rather than by postcode matters here.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer community with recently opened schools and younger cohorts moving into IGCSE years. Demand for literature support here rises sharply in Year 10 term two, which is when booking gets tight.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

The oldest concentration of British-curriculum secondary provision in Dubai. Schools here have settled English departments, long-standing set-text choices and strong internal marking, so a tutor's job is usually sharpening analysis rather than teaching the text from scratch.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai College
  • Safa British School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School

Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Arjan

A newer and faster-growing cluster, with several schools that opened within the last decade and are running their first or second full IGCSE cohorts. Set-text choices here change more often, which is exactly why a tutor should be matched to this year's list rather than last year's.

  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • GEMS Founders School Al Barsha
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Hartland International School

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Garhoud

Mixed-curriculum area where British-curriculum students often travel across the city, and where after-school time is the scarcest resource on this page. Online evening sessions dominate here for straightforward logistical reasons.

  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • The Winchester School

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai education market that students we support attend; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school or group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the texts, not just the subject

The useful first message names the school, the year group, the component route if you know it, and the set texts. With that we can tell you quickly whether we have a specialist who has taught those texts, or whether the honest answer is that we do not.

  2. 02

Send one marked piece of writing

A single marked essay tells a literature tutor more than any assessment call. We read what the school has already said, look at how quotations are handled, and arrive at the trial lesson with a view rather than a questionnaire.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

Sixty minutes, one-to-one over live video, on a real piece of the student's current work. No card details are taken and there is no obligation to continue. Your child should finish it able to name one thing they will do differently.

  4. 04

A plan with a visible first target

After the trial you get a short written plan: which component to attack first, how many sessions, what the essay cycle looks like, and what will be measurable in six weeks. If a block of sessions is not the right spend yet, we say so.

  5. 05

Fortnightly notes and an honest review point

A short parent note every second session, with what moved and what has not. At six weeks we review properly. Changing tutor at that point is normal and costs nothing, and continuing without evidence of movement is the thing to avoid.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the texts your child actually sits

The match starts from the school's set text list, because a literature tutor's value is concentrated in texts they have taught and marked before. Where no specialist has taught that exact combination, we tell you before the trial rather than after.

Marking against the published objectives

Feedback is keyed to the four assessment objectives rather than given as general comment, so a student can see that the same fault recurs and parents can see which objective is capping the grade.

One tutor, one slot, saved work

The same tutor each week on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, with annotated texts and marked scripts saved and sent after every session. Revision in the spring then runs on the student's own materials rather than new ones.

Clear about what we are not

We hold no accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or any school, and we say so. We have no UAE office, we do not write assessed work, and we do not promise grades. What we do is teach literature essay writing, one student at a time.

Availability stated before you commit

Literature specialists for particular texts are genuinely scarce in certain weeks of the year. If the right tutor is not free at your preferred slot, you hear that with the options, rather than being matched to whoever is available.

Priced after the trial, in AED, in context

The market bands published on this page come from named providers and rate surveys with the date attached. Our own quote arrives after the free trial lesson, in AED, with what it covers written down.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Is Cambridge 0475 the same subject as First Language English 0500?+

No. 0475 is Literature in English and 0500 is First Language English, and they are separate syllabuses with separate papers and separate marking. First Language English rewards clear, controlled, accurate writing and reading comprehension. Literature rewards a close response to how a particular writer uses language, structure and form, supported by short quotations. This is why a child can hold a strong grade in 0500 and sit in the middle bands of 0475 at the same time. Most Dubai schools teach both to the same class, often with the same teacher, which hides the distinction until results arrive.

Which papers will my child sit for Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475?+

Every candidate sits the poetry and prose paper, which carries half the grade and gives about forty-five minutes per essay. The remaining half depends on the route the school has entered: either a single closed-book drama paper, or a shorter open-text drama paper combined with an unseen paper on material the student has never studied. The school decides, so ask the head of English which components your child is entered for before booking tutoring. Confirm the current structure and timings against the Cambridge 0475 syllabus for your child's exam series, since component detail changes between syllabus cycles.

Does a 0475 tutor really need to know my child's set texts?+

Yes, and it is the question worth asking first. A tutor who has taught your child's play before recognises a two-line quotation instantly, knows which scenes passage questions tend to favour, and has marked real answers on that text. A tutor meeting the text for the first time spends the first few paid sessions reading it. At market rates that is several hundred dirhams spent on the tutor's preparation rather than your child's writing. We match on text first and tell you plainly when no specialist has taught that exact combination.

How much does in-home English Literature tuition cost in Dubai?+

Published market figures put in-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai at roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, with Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table giving AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500. Qualified online one-to-one sits lower, around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. The gap is travel time rather than teaching quality. These are other providers' published rates as of October 2026, not ours; IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson.

Can a tutor mark my child's literature essays against the assessment objectives?+

That is the core of the work. The four objectives in 0475 carry equal weight: knowledge of the text, understanding of meanings and contexts, response to language, structure and form, and a personal informed response. Marking against them shows a parent which objective is capping the grade, which is far more useful than a number. Scripts are returned annotated between sessions, and the next session is spent on the two or three recurring habits that cost the most marks rather than on a general discussion of the essay.

Should my child choose the passage-based question or the general essay question?+

For most students under time pressure the passage-based question is the safer choice, because the material is printed in front of them and the task is bounded. General essay questions tempt candidates into writing broadly about the whole text without selecting evidence, which is where relevance and analysis both slip. The decision should be made in practice over several papers, not in the exam hall, and it can differ by text: a student may be stronger on the passage for the novel and on the essay for the poetry selection.

How do you prepare for an unseen poetry or prose paper?+

By practising a method on unfamiliar material every week, not by reading more set texts. The method is deliberately mechanical at first: read twice, mark what is visibly unusual in the language and the shape, decide what the writer appears to be doing, then build three or four paragraphs around the clearest effects. Students fail this paper by hunting for a hidden meaning and writing nothing concrete. Weekly short practice from January, with a marked response every fortnight, turns an unpredictable paper into a predictable one.

Does IB Gram send a literature tutor to our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service we run only in India. Every Dubai lesson is delivered one-to-one over live video on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot. For closed-book literature work this suits the subject well, because annotation happens on a shared screen and the annotated text and marked scripts are saved and sent afterwards. It also widens the pool from tutors who can drive to your community to specialists who have taught your child's exact texts.

How many sessions a week does a Year 11 literature student usually need?+

One a week is the common pattern for a student who understands the texts but writes mid-band essays, with a timed essay written between sessions so the hour is spent on the writing rather than on reading aloud. Two a week is justified where a component route includes an unseen paper or where the student is behind on a set text. Short blocks of two or three sessions a week appear in the weeks before the exam window. More than that rarely helps, because essay writing improves on the marking cycle, not on contact hours.

Can a tutor help with an essay my child has already drafted?+

A tutor can mark it, explain which objectives the draft is missing, model the move on a different extract, and send the student back to redraft in their own words. A tutor cannot rewrite the paragraph into their own version, and we do not. The words that go to Cambridge must be the candidate's own, and submitted work that is not is a malpractice matter with consequences well beyond one grade. Feedback given as instruction is slower for one essay and much faster across a term.

Do private tutors in Dubai need a permit from the authorities?+

Individuals giving private lessons in the UAE need a private tuition work permit, introduced through Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued by MoHRE. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. The application route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service.

Will the tutor work from my child's school materials or from past papers?+

From the school's materials first. The sequence a tutor follows is the one the class is following, so nothing is taught twice and the student is never carrying two parallel versions of a text. Past questions come in once a component has been covered, and they come from the official Cambridge source rather than from a tutor's photocopies. We do not supply syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads, because those are Cambridge's to publish.

My child reads well but writes short, thin answers. Can that change before the June series?+

Usually, because thin answers are rarely a reading problem. The common cause is a student who does not know what a developed literature paragraph contains, so they state a point, offer a long quotation, and stop. Teaching the shape of a paragraph, then drilling it on four or five essays with marking in between, produces visible change within six to eight weeks. The timing question that matters is how many timed essays can still be written and marked before the window, not how many weeks remain on a calendar.

Do Dubai schools enter candidates for the November series as well as June?+

Cambridge runs both a June and a November series for IGCSE, and Dubai schools use November mainly for students who missed a paper or who want one further attempt at a single subject. Pearson Edexcel runs an equivalent November series for its International GCSEs, with its November 2026 timetable running to 19 November 2026 and its November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026. Entry deadlines sit months ahead of the papers, so a November plan is made in the summer, not in October.

Does IGCSE Literature in English count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects at IGCSE or GCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. Literature in English is an accredited IGCSE subject, so it can form part of that count. Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry, not by any tutoring provider, so verify your child's specific combination through the Ministry's own channel before relying on it.

Start with one marked essay and a free lesson

If your child is reading the texts and still writing mid-band answers, the quickest way to find out why is to let a literature specialist read one marked essay and then teach for an hour. Send the school, the year group and the set texts, and we will tell you whether we have a tutor who has taught that combination before. The first lesson is free, no card details are taken, and lessons run one-to-one over live video on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot. If the plan afterwards does not look worth the money, nothing has been spent and you will at least know which assessment objective is costing the grade.
