IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science tutor in Dubai is usually hired for one of three specific failures: an option paper nobody has revised, data questions answered with explanation instead of evidence, or physiology that is half-remembered under time pressure. This page takes the subject apart component by component, says exactly where the marks go missing, and names what a single session can fix in each case. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and the first one is free.

  • Live one-to-one video lessons in Gulf Standard Time, early mornings included
  • Teaching driven by your child's own marked scripts, not a fixed syllabus order
  • Option-paper work matched to the option your school actually teaches
  • Investigation feedback that stops at questions and never touches the writing

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What SEHS is actually marked on, and where Dubai candidates lose it

Sports Exercise and Health Science is chosen by a lot of Dubai Diploma students who are good at sport and interested in the body, and it punishes them for a reason that has nothing to do with either. It is a science. It is assessed like a science, with precise terminology, data interpretation under time pressure, calculations with units, and an investigation judged on method rather than on enthusiasm. A student who can explain how a muscle works in conversation and cannot write it in the terms an examiner recognises will sit in the middle bands indefinitely, and the gap is almost always technique rather than knowledge.

The four places marks go missing are predictable enough to name. The first is the option paper, which schools choose and students revise last, so it arrives in the examination as the least practised material on the course. The second is the data-based question, where candidates explain the physiology instead of describing what the data shows and then referring to it. The third is precision in the physiology itself: naming a structure correctly, stating a direction of change, giving a mechanism in the right order. The fourth is the investigation, where the marks sit in the design and the processing rather than in the topic.

None of those four is a reading problem. They are all practice problems, which is why they respond quickly to one-to-one work and why a parent should expect visible movement within a handful of sessions rather than within a term. A session that starts from a marked script can usually diagnose which of the four is costing the most marks inside twenty minutes, because each one leaves a distinctive signature on the page.

Confirm the current component structure, option list and weightings with your child's IB coordinator before planning anything against them. The SEHS guide has been revised, different cohorts in Dubai are working from different versions, and no figure from a tutoring page should be treated as authoritative on what your child will actually sit. What does not change with the guide is the examiner's demand for precision, the behaviour of data questions, or the fact that the option paper is the component schools have least time for.

Delivery is online. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around training, fixtures and the school week, which in this subject is a practical requirement rather than a convenience. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. A tutor here teaches, questions and gives written feedback on the student's own work; the investigation, from the research question to the final sentence, belongs to the student.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The habits SEHS examines are built before the Diploma and reused in the Diploma core. These are the three levels a Dubai family is normally dealing with when they contact us about this subject.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Sciences and Physical and Health Education

The Middle Years Programme splits what SEHS later joins. Its science criteria build the investigation skills, and Physical and Health Education builds the applied understanding. Students who arrive strong in the second and weak in the first are the classic SEHS profile: fluent about training and unpractised at controlling a variable or processing data. That combination predicts a mid-band Diploma grade more reliably than any predicted score does.

Dubai runs both routes into the Diploma, Middle Years to Year 11 in IB schools and IGCSE in the larger British-curriculum sector. IGCSE Biology and Physical Education students usually arrive with better examination timing and less practice at open investigation design. We test which of the two gaps a student has in the first session rather than assuming.

Diploma Programme Sports Exercise and Health Science

SEHS is a Group 4 science assessed through written papers and an internal scientific investigation. The written assessment covers core physiology and applied content plus a paper on an option the school selects. Marks turn on terminological precision, data interpretation and correctly executed calculations. Confirm the current component list, option names and weightings with your school's IB coordinator, because the guide has been revised and cohorts in Dubai are working from different versions.

In Dubai, SEHS is frequently taught by a biologist or by a physical education specialist who has taken the subject on, and which one it is changes the gap. A biologist-taught class is usually secure on physiology and lighter on applied training theory. A physical-education-taught class is often the reverse. Ask the teacher's background, because it predicts the weakness better than a report grade does.

Extended Essay and the Group 4 project

An Extended Essay in SEHS attracts students who want to research their own sport, and it fails for the same reason the investigation fails: a question that cannot be answered with data a school student can ethically and practically obtain from human participants. The Group 4 project is collaborative and assessed on participation rather than output, and for SEHS students it is often the first sustained work alongside physicists and chemists.

Dubai offers real research material for a SEHS Extended Essay: heat acclimatisation, hydration in high ambient temperatures, training load in a Gulf summer, and the effect of indoor against outdoor training environments. Ethics and participant consent are the constraint rather than the ideas, and the first supervision session is spent on whether the study can lawfully and ethically be run at all.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

SEHS students in Dubai usually need help with one or two neighbours as well. These are the related Diploma courses our tutors cover for the same families, with the specific demand each makes.

Sports Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Assessed through written papers and a scientific investigation. Marks turn on precise physiological terminology, data-based question technique, correct calculations with units, and an investigation judged on design and processing. The commonest loss is explaining a mechanism when the question asked the candidate to describe data.

Biology

HL and SL

Shares the physiology and the laboratory discipline, and demands a heavier recall load across a wider syllabus. Students taking both find the cell and systems material reinforcing, and should expect Biology to set the standard for how precisely a mechanism has to be written.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Where energy systems, respiration and nutrition content actually makes sense. SEHS students who take Chemistry write better answers on metabolic pathways because they understand what a bond and an enzyme are doing, rather than reciting a sequence of names.

Psychology

HL and SL

Overlaps directly with the sport-psychology material and with research methods. Students taking both have a genuine advantage on study evaluation and on the ethics section of the investigation, because the vocabulary of participants, consent and validity is already theirs.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics course that most helps a SEHS investigation. Means, spread, correlation and significance are taught here in the form the investigation criteria assume. Students taking both tend to need fewer hours on the processing section than those who are not.

Physics

HL and SL

Relevant to biomechanics, force, levers and energy. A SEHS student who has done any mechanics writes more confidently about movement analysis, and is less likely to describe a lever system in general terms when the question wants named classes and a calculation.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Both levels, confirm with your school

An interdisciplinary alternative Dubai students sometimes weigh against SEHS. Both involve investigation design, and ESS replaces human participants with environmental data. Worth comparing on assessment style rather than on reputation, because they suit different students.

Business Management

HL and SL

Often paired with SEHS by students aiming at sports management, marketing or facility operations. The research project in Business Management and the SEHS investigation reward similar planning discipline, so the two can be sequenced to share work habits.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Where the extended-writing habit either exists or does not. SEHS papers include extended responses that need structure as well as content, and students who write well in English A usually need less help organising a six-mark answer than those who do not.

Extended Essay

Diploma core

Four thousand words of independent research. In SEHS the risk is a question requiring participant data that cannot ethically be collected by a school student. Supervision is questioning and written feedback on the student's own drafts; the school's registered supervisor signs the work off.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

SEHS support is bought by failure mode rather than by term, because the four things that go wrong in this subject respond to quite different work. These are the four blocks Dubai families book.

Option-paper block

Six to ten sessions on the option your school has selected, which is reliably the least-practised component on the course. Schools choose an option and teach it last, so students meet it a few weeks before mocks and never build question fluency in it. The block is almost entirely question practice on the option content, with short teaching bursts where a gap shows, and it is the single highest-yield intervention we offer in this subject.

  • Confirm which option the school teaches before the first session
  • Question practice from the first lesson rather than content delivery
  • Each response marked and returned before the next session
  • A one-page recall sheet built by the student, not handed to them

Data and technique block

Four to six sessions aimed only at how the student handles data and command words. The work is narrow and mechanical: describe what the data shows before explaining it, quote values with units, state a trend and then a deviation from it, and answer the verb that was asked. This is where mid-band scripts most often lose marks they had the knowledge to earn.

  • Describe-then-explain drilled until it becomes the default order
  • Values quoted from the data with units every time
  • Command words matched to the shape of the answer required
  • Marks counted against the student's own script, so the loss is visible

Investigation supervision block

Booked while the research question is still open, which is the point at which the internal marks are largely decided. Sessions interrogate whether the study can be run ethically with human participants, whether the measurements are reliable enough to show anything, and what the processing will look like. Feedback is given on the student's own drafts, with the writing left entirely to the student.

  • Participant ethics and consent addressed before any data is taken
  • Reliability and repeat measures planned rather than improvised
  • Processing decided in advance so the data is collected in a usable shape
  • Written feedback on drafts, with no prose supplied by the tutor

Pre-session recall sprint

A four to six week block in the term before the May session, built around testing rather than teaching. The student is questioned aloud on physiology until the vocabulary is automatic, then writes timed responses under pressure. Short, frequent sessions work better than long ones here, and they fit around a fixture list more easily than a weekly ninety-minute slot does.

  • Oral testing on named structures, directions and mechanisms
  • Two timed responses a week with fast marking turnaround
  • Calculation drills until units stop being dropped
  • Scheduling adjusted for fixtures, tournaments and Ramadan

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The option paper, and why your school's choice decides the revision plan

The first question we ask a Dubai SEHS family is which option the school teaches, and a surprising number cannot answer it. That is not carelessness; it is a consequence of how the component is scheduled. Schools select an option, teach the core first because it underpins everything, and arrive at the option in the final stretch. Students therefore meet this material when revision has already started, write very few practice answers on it, and sit a paper on the content they have handled least.

It is also the component where tutoring is most obviously efficient, because the fix is question volume rather than teaching. A student who has written twenty marked responses on their option before the mock is in a different position from one who has read the chapter twice, and twenty responses is six to ten sessions of work. Nothing else in this subject converts hours into marks at that rate.

Options are chosen by the school from the list in the current guide, and the list has changed between guide versions. The commonly taught areas are physiological optimisation of performance, the psychology of sport, physical activity and health, and nutrition for sport and exercise. Confirm both the current option list and your school's selection with the IB coordinator before planning revision, because preparing the wrong option is the most wasteful mistake available in this subject and we have seen families make it.

The table maps those commonly taught option areas against the question style each one attracts and what a session actually does about it. Use the right-hand column as the test of whether a prospective tutor knows the component: a tutor who can only offer to teach the content, rather than to drill the question type, has not taught this paper.

02

The physiology that has to be known cold, and the precision examiners want

SEHS recall is not enormous, but it is unforgiving about wording. A candidate who writes that the heart pumps harder has said nothing an examiner can credit; one who writes that stroke volume increases and heart rate rises, giving a higher cardiac output, has answered. The difference is not intelligence, it is vocabulary that has been tested aloud until it is automatic. Students who revise by reading always under-perform students who revise by being asked.

The pattern of loss is consistent across the Dubai scripts we read. Structures are named approximately rather than exactly. Directions of change are left implicit, so an examiner cannot tell whether the candidate knows that something rose or fell. Mechanisms are given out of order, which costs the sequencing marks even where every element is present. And comparisons are asserted rather than made, with no reference to the thing being compared against.

The work is therefore oral before it is written. We spend the first part of a recall session asking rather than explaining, which exposes in minutes what a written revision guide would hide for weeks. Then the same material gets written under time, because knowing a mechanism aloud and producing it in six marks under clock pressure are different skills.

The table lists the systems that carry the most marks, what has to be reproducible without prompting, and the error we see most often. Treat it as a testing checklist rather than a syllabus, and check the content expectations for your child's cohort with their teacher, since different Dubai cohorts are working from different guide versions.

03

Data-based questions: describing before explaining

If a Dubai SEHS student is scoring in the middle bands while their teacher says they understand the subject, the data questions are the first place to look. These items present a graph or a table and ask the candidate to work from it, and the dominant failure is that the candidate ignores the data and explains the physiology they already know. The physiology may be correct. It is not what was asked, so the marks reserved for using the data are never available.

The fix is an order of operations, and it is genuinely mechanical. State what the data shows, with values and units quoted from the figure. Note the deviation from the trend if there is one, because the deviation is frequently where a mark sits. Only then explain, and make the explanation refer back to the numbers just quoted. Students who adopt that order stop losing marks within two or three sessions, which makes this the fastest-moving work on the page.

There is a second habit worth building at the same time: reading the axes, the units and the scale before reading the shape of the line. A surprising share of lost marks comes from a candidate who has interpreted a graph correctly in shape and wrongly in magnitude, because the axis was logarithmic, the units were not what was assumed, or the scale did not start at zero.

The table maps the data presentations that recur in this subject against what the question is really asking and the habit that costs marks. Work through it against your child's last marked script: in almost every case the mismatch between the question's verb and the answer's opening sentence is visible immediately.

04

Calculations and units: the marks that get dropped rather than lost

SEHS calculations are not mathematically demanding and candidates lose marks on them constantly. The reason is that they are treated as an incidental part of a science subject rather than as a drilled skill, so a student who can do the arithmetic in their head writes it down without units, without the working an examiner needs to see, and without checking whether the answer is physically sensible.

Three habits recover most of this. Write the formula before substituting into it, because a formula on the page frequently earns a mark on its own and always prevents the wrong substitution. Carry units through the calculation rather than attaching them at the end, which is how an impossible answer gets caught. And sanity-check the result against what the body can actually do: a cardiac output or an oxygen consumption that is an order of magnitude out should trigger a second look, and a student who has been taught the normal range will notice while one who has not will not.

The second half of the work is justification. Many calculation items in this subject do not stop at the number; they ask the candidate to use it. A dietary or training recommendation based on a calculated figure needs the figure, the reasoning and the recommendation, and students who stop at the figure leave half the marks on the table. We practise the two halves separately before putting them together, because combining them before either is secure produces answers that are muddled in both directions.

The table lists the calculation types that recur, what each one needs on the page, and the error that attracts. Confirm with your child's teacher which formulae their cohort is expected to recall and which are provided, since this varies between guide versions and it changes what has to be memorised.

RECURRING SEHS CALCULATIONS AND WHAT HAS TO APPEAR ON THE PAGE. CONFIRM WITH YOUR TEACHER WHICH FORMULAE ARE PROVIDED

05

Where Dubai SEHS candidates lose marks, in order of frequency

  • Data questions answered with physiology instead of with the data
  • Terminology approximate where the examiner needs it exact
  • The option paper unpractised rather than unknown
  • Calculations correct in the head and incomplete on the page
  • Extended responses complete in content and unstructured in form
  • Practitioner knowledge substituted for syllabus content

Across the scripts we read for Dubai students, the losses fall in a consistent order, and the order matters because it tells a family what to buy first. Leading the list is answering a data question with physiology rather than with the data. Second is imprecise terminology, where the candidate knows the mechanism and does not write it in words an examiner can award. Third is the option paper, unpractised rather than unknown. Fourth is calculation presentation, where the arithmetic was right and the page was not. Fifth is extended-response structure, where everything relevant is present and unorganised, so the marks that depend on development are missed.

Only after those five does genuine content ignorance appear, and that ordering is the most useful thing on this page. The default assumption of a worried parent is that their child does not know enough and needs the syllabus taught again. For most mid-band SEHS candidates in this emirate that is the wrong diagnosis and the most expensive possible response, because it buys a term of content delivery to fix a technique problem.

There is a sixth loss worth naming separately because it is specific to this subject's population. Students who train seriously often write about sport from experience rather than from the course, substituting what they know works in their own training for what the syllabus states. Examiners cannot credit that, however true it is. Part of the work with an athlete-student is explicitly separating their practitioner knowledge from the assessed material, and it is usually a relief to them once named.

A session that begins from a marked script can place a student on this list quickly, which is why we ask for one before the trial lesson. The script shows the signature of each failure: data questions answered without quoted values, mechanisms in the wrong order, option answers that are short, calculations with naked numbers, long responses with no paragraph structure.

06

The scientific investigation: design and processing, not topic

SEHS students choose investigation topics they care about, which is a good start and not where the marks are. The marks sit in whether the study was designed so that it could show anything, whether the data was processed in a way that supports the conclusion, and whether the evaluation engages with what actually went wrong rather than listing generic limitations. A beautifully chosen question with two participants and one trial each cannot earn the design or the analysis marks, however interesting it is.

Human participants add a layer this subject's candidates frequently underestimate. Consent has to be obtained and documented, the risk of the protocol has to be considered honestly, and anyone under eighteen involves additional care. A Dubai student planning to test teammates during academy training needs the coach's agreement as well as the participants', and the school's own ethics process governs all of it. These are not obstacles to work around; they are part of what the criteria assess, and a study that ignores them is in trouble before any data exists.

Reliability is the other recurring weakness. A single measurement of anything physiological is close to meaningless, because the body varies between trials and between days. Repeat measures, a stated protocol that a reader could follow exactly, and control of the obvious confounders such as time of day, prior exercise and hydration are what separate a study that analyses cleanly from one that produces noise. In Dubai, ambient temperature is a confounder worth naming explicitly, and a student who controls for it has a genuine methodological point to make in their evaluation.

Our supervision rule is narrow and stated before anyone pays. A tutor may ask any question about the investigation and may not supply any sentence of it. That means the tutor can ask whether the protocol is repeatable, whether the sample will support the processing, whether the evaluation is about this study or about studies in general. It means the tutor does not propose the research question, does not write or rewrite any part of the submission, and does not touch the data.

07

The student who trains fifteen hours a week

  • Early-morning and late-evening slots held for athlete schedules
  • Written work concentrated in light fixture weeks, not spread evenly
  • Recall testing instead of new content in heavy training weeks
  • Practitioner experience used for examples, never as the answer

A meaningful share of Dubai SEHS candidates are serious athletes: academy football, competitive swimming, tennis, equestrian, athletics. The subject is often chosen because it connects to their life, and the training load then becomes the main obstacle to studying it. This is a scheduling problem with a known solution, and it is worth setting out because generic advice about weekly routine is useless to these families.

Three adjustments do most of the work. Sessions go where the training is not, which in Dubai frequently means 06:30 before school or after 20:00, and we hold those slots deliberately for this group. Written work is concentrated in the lighter weeks of a fixture calendar rather than spread evenly, so a tournament week carries no marked essay and the fortnight after carries two. And recall testing replaces teaching in the heavy weeks, because being questioned for thirty minutes is sustainable after training in a way that absorbing new material is not.

The second half of the issue is the one named earlier: an athlete's practitioner knowledge competing with the syllabus. A student who has done periodised training for years has strong intuitions about what works, and the examination rewards the course content rather than the intuition. Making that distinction explicit, and treating their experience as a source of examples rather than a source of answers, converts the training background from an obstacle back into the advantage it should be.

Ramadan deserves its own note. Sessions move to post-Iftar slots as standard rather than on request, training loads change, and in the weeks that follow there is often a compressed run-up to internal deadlines. We plan the term with those dates visible instead of discovering them, and we would rather reduce session frequency in a heavy fortnight than hold a slot nobody can use properly.

08

What one session can actually fix, symptom by symptom

Parents reasonably want to know what a single hour buys, and in this subject the honest answer is specific rather than general. Some SEHS faults are one-session fixes because they are habits of presentation. Others are multi-week because they are gaps in recall or in practice volume. Telling the two apart before spending anything is the most useful thing a family can do.

The habits are quick. Describe-before-explain on data questions, quoting values with units, writing a formula before substituting, naming the lever class, stating direction of change: each of those can be taught, practised and visibly changed inside one session, and they appear on almost every mid-band script we read. A family who buys three sessions and gets those five habits has had good value, and we would rather say that than sell a term.

The gaps are slower and should be priced honestly. An unpractised option paper is six to ten sessions because the fix is question volume. Insecure physiology is four to eight because the fix is repeated oral testing. A weak investigation design caught late may not be fixable at all if the data is collected and the deadline is past, in which case we say so and work on the papers instead.

The table maps the symptom a parent can actually observe to the diagnosis, the session work, and what the student has to do afterwards. The last column matters most: every item on this list requires the student to do something between sessions, and a provider who implies otherwise is selling attendance rather than progress.

Honesty, permits and how these lessons run

Private tutoring in the UAE is lawful and regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation service for private tutor licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time via the ministry's app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, no amount is quoted here.

Two further positions should be explicit. A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal entity from an individual tutor and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no premises in the UAE, and claims no approval, accreditation, licensing or endorsement from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board. Separately, ADEK's professional-ethics rules in Abu Dhabi bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct points the same way, so no family anywhere in the UAE should arrange for a child to be tutored privately by their own class teacher.

On materials, we do not reproduce or supply IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. They belong to the board and are the school's to distribute. We reference them, cite the official source and link out, which is what the examination boards ask of anyone writing about their qualifications. Where this page describes components, options or weightings, treat it as a prompt to check with the coordinator rather than as a source.

Delivery is online: one-to-one over live video, screen-shared, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time and moved post-Iftar during Ramadan. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. If no SEHS specialist is free in your slot, we say so and estimate when one will be, rather than assigning a biologist and letting you find out in week three. A free trial lesson comes first in every case, with no card required to book it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Lessons run online, so a family's address does not change who is available to teach. It does change the school, the training facility and the hours of the day a session can realistically occupy.

Dubai Sports City and Motor City

Built around training facilities, so a high proportion of SEHS students here carry an academy schedule alongside school. Sessions commonly land at 06:30 before school or after 20:00, and the planning problem is fitting marked written work into weeks with fixtures rather than finding content time.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills

A dense cluster of IB and British schools within a few kilometres, several with strong sports provision and SEHS taught by a physical education specialist. The typical gap in this cluster is physiological precision rather than applied understanding.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh

Swimming, beach training and water sports are part of the weekly routine for many students here, which makes heat and hydration content immediately concrete. Afternoon traffic on Al Wasl and Jumeirah Beach Road pushes most sessions past 17:00.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers

Apartment living with gym access in the building, so investigations using resting and recovery measures are straightforward here. A high share of mid-programme transfers arrive from other systems and need the core physiology rebuilt rather than revised.

Arabian Ranches, The Springs and The Meadows

Villa communities with long school runs and heavy co-curricular loads. Weekend morning sessions dominate, and the marked-work cycle matters more than usual because weekday contact time is genuinely scarce in these households.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Dubai Festival City

A wide catchment across several curricula where SEHS candidates are often the only ones in their year group. Where a student has no peer cohort, sessions have to supply the discussion and the question practice the class would otherwise provide.

Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Equestrian and endurance training in one direction, universities in the other. Students here frequently ask how a SEHS grade reads to a local admissions office for physiotherapy and sports science routes, because the campuses are on the doorstep.

Downtown, Business Bay and Al Quoz

Commercial gym and studio density is high, which makes access to equipment for an investigation easier than in most areas. Session times here are the most flexible in the emirate because school runs are shorter and often walkable.

School ecosystem

Dubai IB World Schools running SEHS at Diploma level

SEHS provision follows staffing and sports investment rather than demand, so the subject appears where a school has both a willing specialist and a cohort large enough to timetable it. KHDA inspects these schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Ask the coordinator who teaches SEHS and which option paper the school has selected.

Dubai schools where SEHS students combine academy training with the Diploma

Several Dubai schools run performance sport programmes alongside the Diploma, and SEHS students in them carry a training load that sets the timetable. Sessions for these students are planned around fixture lists, and written work is scheduled in the lighter weeks rather than spread evenly across the term.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked script and the option name

The two most useful things a Dubai family can send are a recent marked paper response and the name of the option the school teaches. Between them they let a specialist place the student on the list of common losses and say which block is worth buying, usually before any call takes place.

  2. 02

We check a specialist is genuinely free for your slot

SEHS specialists are thinner on the ground than Biology tutors across this region, and athlete timetables need unusual hours. We check the specific early-morning or late-evening slot you need in Gulf Standard Time and tell you honestly if nobody suitable is available yet.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson spent on the real fault

The trial is a working session. For most students it is spent rewriting one data-based answer in the describe-then-explain order and seeing the mark difference, which is the fastest demonstration available in this subject. No card is required and nothing is charged if you stop there.

  4. 04

A written plan naming the block and the deliverables

After the trial you get a short plan: which of the four blocks applies, how many sessions, what the student writes between them, and what should be visible by the next school assessment. Habits are priced as sessions; practice volume is priced as weeks.

  5. 05

Marked work accumulates where you can read it

Every timed response comes back scored with a comment, and the scripts stay in sequence. Reading three consecutive responses tells a parent whether the same loss keeps recurring, which is also how we decide a block has done its job and should end rather than roll on.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis before delivery

Most mid-band SEHS scripts in this emirate fail on technique rather than on knowledge, so teaching the syllabus again is usually the most expensive wrong answer. We place the student on a ranked list of common losses first, from their own marked work.

The option paper treated as the priority it is

Schools necessarily teach the option last, so it arrives least practised and costs the most avoidable marks. We ask which option your school teaches before the first session and drill questions in it from lesson one rather than re-teaching content.

Hours that fit an athlete's week

Sessions at 06:30 or after 20:00, written work concentrated in light fixture weeks, and recall testing instead of new content in heavy ones. For students training seriously, scheduling is the difference between a block that works and one that is cancelled.

A stated line on the investigation

A tutor may ask any question about the investigation and may not supply any sentence, any data point or any part of the protocol. We say that before a family pays, and we do not reproduce board materials such as guides, past papers or mark schemes.

No regulator claims and no invented statistics

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry or examination-board approval and claims none. Every number on this page is attributed to its source, and where a figure could not be verified, including IB session dates, it has been left out.

An honest no when a specialist is unavailable

SEHS has a small specialist pool regionally. Where nobody suitable is free we say so and estimate when a slot will open, instead of substituting an adjacent science teacher quietly and leaving a family to discover it mid-term.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Which SEHS option paper has my child's Dubai school chosen?+

Ask the IB coordinator or the SEHS teacher directly, because it is the single most important planning fact in this subject and families often do not know it. Schools select from the option list in the current guide and teach the option last, after the core. If outside help prepares the wrong option, the hours are wasted entirely, which is the most expensive avoidable mistake available here. Get the answer in writing before anyone starts revision, and ask at the same time which guide version the cohort is working from, since the option list has changed between versions.

What does my child actually have to memorise for SEHS?+

Less than for Biology, and with far more precision. Named structures, directions of change, mechanisms in the right order, the three energy systems with their fuels and durations, lever classes, and the distinction between an acute response and a chronic adaptation. The volume is manageable; the standard of wording is not negotiable. A candidate who writes that the heart pumps harder earns nothing, where one who writes that stroke volume and heart rate both rise, increasing cardiac output, earns the mark. We test recall aloud for that reason rather than setting reading.

Why does my son lose marks on questions he says were easy?+

Usually because he answered a different question from the one asked. The classic version is a data item where the candidate explains the physiology they know instead of describing what the graph shows and then referring to it, which leaves the data marks untouched however correct the physiology is. The second version is a command word mismatch: compare answered as describe, evaluate answered as explain. Both are visible in the first line of his answer. Read his last marked script against the opening sentence of each response and the pattern usually appears immediately.

How are the data-based questions in SEHS actually marked?+

In two parts, and candidates usually attempt only one. There are marks for working from the data, which means quoting values with units, stating the direction and magnitude of change, and noting any deviation from the trend. There are separate marks for explanation, which has to refer back to the data rather than float free of it. A strong answer therefore opens with two quoted figures and a direction, then explains. We drill that order until it becomes automatic, and it is the fastest-moving improvement in this subject, typically visible within two or three sessions.

Which SEHS calculations are worth drilling?+

Cardiac output from stroke volume and heart rate, body composition and index measures, energy intake against expenditure, mechanical advantage in a lever system, percentage change between two measurements, and rates read from a graph. None is mathematically hard and all of them lose marks for presentation rather than arithmetic. Three habits recover most of it: write the formula before substituting, carry units through rather than adding them at the end, and sanity-check the answer against physiological plausibility. Confirm with the teacher which formulae your child's cohort must recall and which are provided, as this varies.

What separates a full-mark SEHS answer from a half-mark one?+

Specificity and structure, almost always. The full-mark answer names the structure exactly, states the direction of change, gives the mechanism in sequence, and where a comparison is asked, puts both sides in the same sentence with a comparative term. The half-mark answer contains the same understanding expressed approximately and in no particular order. For longer responses, add development: a point, an elaboration and a consequence, rather than a list of true statements. Students can be taught a default shape for six and eight mark items, and it holds up under exam pressure better than improvisation.

My daughter trains fifteen hours a week. How do sessions fit?+

Around the training, not into it. We hold early slots from around 06:30 and late slots after 20:00 in Gulf Standard Time specifically for athlete schedules, and we concentrate written work in the lighter weeks of a fixture calendar rather than spreading it evenly. In heavy training weeks the session becomes oral recall testing rather than new content, which is sustainable after a session on the pitch or in the pool when absorbing new material is not. During Ramadan slots move post-Iftar as standard rather than on request.

Is SEHS taken seriously as a science by universities?+

It depends entirely on the course, and the answer should come from the university rather than from a tutoring page. Sports science, physiotherapy, coaching, health and exercise routes generally accept it readily. Medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and the physical sciences usually require Biology, Chemistry or Physics at a stated level, and SEHS does not substitute for them. Read the entry requirements for your child's intended course and entry year on the university's own admissions page. Where a prerequisite science is missing, the right spend is on that subject rather than on additional SEHS hours.

What should a first SEHS session actually cover?+

Diagnosis, from the student's own marked work. A useful first hour takes one recent data-based response and rewrites it in the describe-then-explain order, counting the marks before and after, which shows the student rather than tells them. It also establishes which option the school teaches, how secure the core physiology is under oral questioning, and whether the investigation is on track. What a first session should not be is a tour of the syllabus, because that answers a question nobody asked and costs a family an hour of diagnosis.

How do I tell whether the problem is content or technique?+

Look at the shape of the loss on a marked script. Technique problems leave partial marks spread across many questions: answers that are broadly right and never quite scoring. Content gaps leave zeros clustered on particular topics while other topics are fine. A quick home test is to ask your child to explain a mechanism aloud. If the explanation is accurate and the written answer scored poorly, it is technique. If the explanation is vague, it is recall. The two need different blocks, and buying the wrong one is the commonest waste in this subject.

What does the SEHS investigation reward that my child may be missing?+

Design and processing rather than topic. Marks sit in whether the study was built so it could show something, whether repeat measures and controls make the data trustworthy, whether the processing supports the conclusion drawn, and whether the evaluation addresses this study's actual weaknesses rather than a generic list. A compelling question with two participants and one trial each cannot earn those marks. In Dubai, naming ambient temperature as a controlled or confounding variable is a real methodological point that very few candidates make and that costs nothing to include.

Can a tutor help if the investigation uses teammates as participants?+

A tutor can help with the design, the ethics reasoning and the processing, and must not touch the submission. Using teammates raises specific issues worth resolving early: informed consent from each participant, agreement from the coach where the data is collected during training, additional care where participants are under eighteen, and honest consideration of the protocol's risk. The school's own ethics process governs all of it and the coordinator is the person to ask. A study that collects data before those approvals exist is in difficulty regardless of how good the question was.

How much of the SEHS written assessment is extended writing?+

Enough that structure is worth teaching separately from content, though the exact balance depends on which guide version your child's cohort follows, so confirm it with the coordinator. What is consistent is that longer items reward development rather than coverage: a point made, elaborated and then carried to a consequence will outscore a list of six true statements. Students who learn a default shape for extended responses stop producing answers that contain everything and score in the middle. It is a two or three session fix and it holds under examination pressure.

Does the Higher Level material appear in the option paper too?+

Where a course distinguishes Higher from Standard Level, the additional material typically carries into more than one component, which is why treating it as a separate block rather than as extra weekly content works better. The practical point is that extended material is taught last, revised least and practised almost never, so it behaves exactly like the option paper. Confirm the current structure with your school's IB coordinator before planning, since different Dubai cohorts are working from different guide versions and no tutoring page should be the source for what your child will sit.

Can one tutor cover SEHS and Chemistry for the same student?+

Often yes, and the pairing is genuinely useful. Chemistry is where respiration, energy systems and nutrition content stops being a list of names and starts being a mechanism, so a student doing both tends to write better metabolic answers in SEHS. The caution is scheduling: two subjects in one slot usually means neither gets the written practice it needs, so we would normally run them as separate sessions with one tutor rather than as a combined hour. Tell us both subjects at the consultation and we will say whether one specialist covers them properly.

How late in DP2 can SEHS technique still be fixed?+

Later than in most subjects, because the fastest improvements here are presentation habits rather than knowledge. Describe-then-explain on data questions, quoting values with units, formula before substitution and a default shape for long answers can all be changed in a handful of sessions six weeks out, and they appear on nearly every mid-band script. What cannot be fixed that late is an unpractised option paper, which needs question volume, or an investigation already submitted. Tell us at the consultation which components are still open and we will plan only around those.

Send a marked script and the option name, and we will tell you what it is costing

If you are looking for an IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science tutor in Dubai, the two things worth sending first are a recent marked paper response and the name of the option your child's school teaches. A specialist will place the losses in order, say which are one-session habits and which need weeks of practice, and tell you honestly if the most useful spend is on a different subject. The first lesson is free, no card is needed to book it, and lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time around training and fixtures.
