IB DP Philosophy Online Tutor in Dubai

What an IB DP philosophy online tutor in Dubai costs depends on four things: level, whether the prescribed text is included, whether the internal assessment is supervised, and how close the May session is. This page publishes the AED bands the Dubai market actually charges, says who quotes what, and sets out which hours move marks and which do not. Lessons are live, one-to-one and on Gulf Standard Time. First lesson free, one per student, no card details needed.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Why Philosophy quotes in Dubai vary by a factor of ten

Ask five Dubai providers what IB Philosophy support costs and you will be quoted anything from AED 60 an hour to AED 650. Nothing about the subject explains that spread; what explains it is that the five are selling different things. At the bottom of the range the hour is content revision by a graduate who has read around the course. At the top it is a named specialist with examining experience whose scarcity, not whose syllabus coverage, sets the price. In between sits the band where most families actually transact.

Philosophy also costs more to tutor than most Group 3 subjects for one structural reason: almost nothing in it can be marked quickly. A Maths exploration can be checked in twenty minutes. A Philosophy essay on Nietzsche's account of moral genealogy cannot, because the grade turns on whether the argument has been reconstructed accurately and then tested, and reading for that takes as long as the student took to write it. Any quote that does not say whether essay marking happens inside or outside the paid hour is incomplete.

The third variable is the component mix. A Standard Level student who needs help with the core theme is buying ordinary teaching. A Higher Level student who needs the prescribed text paper, the unseen-text paper and supervision of the internal assessment is buying three distinct skills, and the third of those is project supervision rather than teaching. Providers who price all of that as one undifferentiated hour are either underpricing the supervision or overpricing the teaching, and it is worth asking which.

The fourth is timing, and it is the one families control. Rates in this market firm up as the exam window approaches because availability shrinks, and the hours themselves become less productive: a student six weeks out cannot absorb a new optional theme, so the money buys technique rather than knowledge. The same budget spent in DP1 buys both. Nothing in Philosophy tutoring is as expensive as starting it late. A family who buys fifteen hours across DP1 almost always ends up ahead of one who buys thirty in the final term, at half the outlay, and the difference is availability rather than effort.

Delivery for families in the Emirates is online, one-to-one, over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE at any price; that service exists only in India. For this subject the trade is almost entirely in your favour, because Philosophy specialists are rare in any single city and the text your child has been set may be one that only a handful of teachers in the region have taught to examination. Restricting the search to people who can also drive to your district by six in the evening is how families end up paying a premium for a tutor who has never taught their text.

At a glance

  • Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour
  • In-home visits in this market run higher because travel is paid for out of the hour
  • Ask whether essay marking happens inside the paid hour or outside it
  • Internal assessment supervision is project work, not teaching, and should be priced separately
  • Lessons are delivered online; no tutor is sent to an address in the Emirates
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Philosophy exists only in the Diploma, but what a student brings to it is set years earlier. The IB programmes Dubai schools run build, or fail to build, the habit of defending a claim against an objection. Here is what each stage contributes and what it leaves for a tutor to do.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Philosophy is built on a compulsory core theme about what it is to be human, plus optional themes chosen by the school: one at Standard Level, two at Higher Level. Candidates also study a prescribed philosophical text and write an internal assessment analysing a non-philosophical stimulus. Higher Level adds a paper on unseen material about the nature of philosophical activity itself.

Philosophy is a minority option in Dubai and several schools run it only when enough students opt in. Before committing in Year 11, ask whether the course will definitely run, which optional themes the department teaches, and which prescribed text has been chosen, because that third answer determines how scarce and therefore how expensive a suitable tutor is.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

No MYP subject is philosophy, but the thinking-critically criterion in Individuals and Societies and the conceptual framing used across MYP subjects both rehearse the move the Diploma needs: separating a claim from the reasons offered for it. Students who have been marked on that arrive able to recognise an argument rather than an opinion.

Dubai students coming out of MYP into Philosophy usually need fewer paid hours than those arriving from an exam-led British Year 11, because they have already been assessed on conceptual thinking. Where they need help is speed: MYP assessment rarely runs against a clock, and Philosophy papers are unforgiving about time.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP contributes the disposition rather than any content: asking why, being asked for a reason, and being told that two classmates can disagree reasonably. The exhibition in the final PYP year is the first time most students have to defend a position they chose themselves in front of an audience.

Dubai has a large PYP sector and many of those schools sit on a campus that also runs the Diploma. For families planning a long stay in the emirate, the continuity matters less for content than for assessment literacy: students who have been inside IB marking since Year 3 need noticeably less of the technique coaching that paid hours otherwise go on.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Career-related Programme students take Diploma courses alongside a career-related study and a reflective project. Philosophy pairs well with the reflective project, which asks for an ethical dilemma to be examined, and that is close to the analytical work the Philosophy internal assessment requires.

The Career-related Programme is rare in Dubai, so a CP student taking Philosophy is often the only candidate in the school. Costs run higher for those students in practice, because there is no class to supply discussion and more of the dialectical work has to happen in paid one-to-one time rather than in a seminar room.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a Philosophy tutor needs to have taught depends on three choices the school made: the optional themes, the prescribed text, and whether the cohort is Higher or Standard Level. Those three narrow the pool of suitable tutors considerably, which is why they also move the price. Below is the full content map.

Core Theme: Being Human

Compulsory, SL and HL

Personhood, identity, the self, freedom, the mind and body, and what distinguishes human beings. Examined from a stimulus rather than a named question, which is why students who have only revised content freeze: the stimulus has to be read philosophically before anything can be written about it.

Optional Theme: Ethics

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Normative theories, metaethics, the status of moral claims and applied problems. The most commonly chosen theme in Dubai schools and the easiest to write badly, because students argue for positions instead of analysing the arguments that support them.

Optional Theme: Epistemology

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Knowledge, justification, scepticism, perception and testimony. Technically demanding and well rewarded: a student who can state and attack a justification condition precisely will score higher here than they would on a theme that invites opinion.

Optional Theme: Philosophy of Religion

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Concepts of the divine, arguments for and against the existence of God, religious experience and language, and the problem of evil. Requires careful handling of argument form: students who paraphrase an argument rather than reconstruct its premises cannot then evaluate it.

Optional Theme: Philosophy of Science

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Scientific method, demarcation, theory change, realism and the status of scientific knowledge. A strong pairing for students taking a Group 4 subject at Higher Level, who already have the examples and need the analytical vocabulary.

Optional Theme: Political Philosophy

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Authority, legitimacy, liberty, equality, justice and the grounds of political obligation. Candidates taking Global Politics alongside it must keep the writing conventions apart: this theme rewards conceptual analysis, not contemporary evidence.

Optional Theme: Aesthetics

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Art, beauty, judgement, representation and the value of aesthetic experience. Rarely chosen and therefore the hardest theme to find a tutor for, which is the clearest single example of how a school's syllabus choice moves what a family pays.

Optional Theme: Philosophy and Contemporary Society

Optional, SL one theme and HL two

Philosophical questions raised by technology, work, gender, the environment and social organisation. Accessible and popular, with the usual risk: the contemporary material crowds out the philosophy and answers drift into commentary.

The Prescribed Text

Compulsory, SL and HL

One text studied in depth from the published list, which includes works such as Plato's Republic, Descartes' Meditations, Hume's Enquiry, Mill's On Liberty, Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morality, de Beauvoir's The Second Sex, Confucius' Analects and the Tao Te Ching among others. Examined by essay on that text alone.

HL Extension: the Nature of Philosophical Activity

Higher Level only

An unseen passage about what philosophy is and how it is done, answered without prior knowledge of the passage. Students cannot revise content for it, only method, which is why it is the component most often left unpractised until the mocks expose it.

Internal Assessment: Philosophical Analysis of a Stimulus

Compulsory, SL and HL

An essay of roughly two thousand words that takes a deliberately non-philosophical stimulus, such as a film, an advertisement, a news item or an artwork, and extracts and examines a philosophical issue from it. Supervision here is project work rather than teaching, and should be priced as such.

Argument Reconstruction as a Trainable Skill

Applies to every component

Setting out a philosopher's premises, identifying the inference, naming the hidden assumption, then attacking the weakest link. This single skill carries marks on all four components, and it is the one thing a Philosophy tutoring budget should be spent on first.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes cover almost every Philosophy requirement, and they cost different amounts because they take different amounts of a tutor's unpaid time. Knowing which one you are buying is the easiest way to stop overpaying for the wrong thing.

Weekly essay cycle, ninety minutes

One longer session a week, with an essay written between sessions and read before the next. Ninety minutes is the right length for this subject because an argument cannot be reconstructed, attacked and rewritten inside an hour. Ask whether reading time is billed; where it is not, the hourly rate quoted is doing more work than it appears to.

  • An essay question set every session and answered to the real time limit
  • Marked against the published descriptors before the next session starts
  • One fault worked on at a time: reconstruction, objection, or judgement
  • Recording shared so the marking commentary can be rewatched in April

Internal assessment supervision block

Four to six sessions placed around the stimulus-based essay: testing whether the chosen stimulus actually yields a philosophical issue, settling which issue, choosing the philosophers to bring to it, then one round of criterion-referenced comments on the student's own draft. This is project supervision and it should appear as its own line on a quote.

  • Stimulus tested for philosophical yield before any drafting
  • The issue narrowed to one question the word count can actually hold
  • Philosophers chosen for relevance rather than for reputation
  • A single feedback round on the student's draft, with no text supplied

Prescribed text intensive

Six to eight sessions on the one text the school has set, working through its argument structure section by section rather than reading around it. The most cost-efficient block in the subject, because the examined content is finite and known in advance, and because the same reconstruction skill transfers to every other paper.

  • The text's argument mapped premise by premise, not summarised
  • Standard objections learned with their replies, not as a list
  • Past questions on the text answered to time from session three
  • Quotation discipline drilled, because unsupported claims lose marks here

Unseen-text technique, Higher Level only

Two to four sessions on the Higher Level paper, which presents unseen material about the nature of philosophical activity. No content can be revised, so the whole intervention is method: how to find the passage's claim, what to do in the first five minutes, and how to build an answer that engages rather than paraphrases.

  • A full unseen passage attempted cold in the first session
  • A reusable opening routine for the first five minutes
  • Paraphrase identified and eliminated from the student's answers
  • Timing rehearsed until the answer finishes rather than stops

What the Dubai market charges for Philosophy support, by provider model

Dubai publishes less tutoring pricing than almost any comparable market, and three of the best-ranked pages for IB tutoring in this city carry no figure at all. The table below assembles what providers do publish, with the band, who quotes in it, and what the hour includes. Every figure is a market rate read from the provider's own published material in October 2026, not an IB Gram price, and rates move.

Read it as a map of what you are buying rather than a league table. The lowest band is content revision and homework support, usually from a recent graduate, and for a subject where the grade turns on argument reconstruction it is poor value even when it is cheap. The middle band is the one most Dubai families transact in and is where a qualified subject tutor who can mark to the descriptors sits. The top band prices scarcity and reputation, which are real but are not the same as syllabus coverage.

One figure families should extract from any quote before paying is whether marking and reading happen inside or outside the billed hour. In Philosophy this is not a detail. An essay takes a tutor roughly as long to read properly as it took the student to write, and a provider quoting AED 200 an hour with marking included is charging less in real terms than one quoting AED 160 with marking billed separately. Ask the question in writing.

02

The six things that move a Philosophy quote in this emirate

  • Higher Level means two optional themes and an extra paper, so a larger scope
  • A rarely taught prescribed text is the single biggest driver of scarcity
  • Internal assessment supervision is months of project work, not a weekly hour
  • Starting in the final term costs the same per hour and delivers less per hour

Level comes first. A Higher Level candidate has two optional themes rather than one, plus the unseen-text paper, so the teachable surface is larger and the tutor pool smaller. Second is the prescribed text. A student set Plato or Mill can be matched easily; a student set a less commonly taught text on the list is looking for someone who has taken candidates through it to examination, and scarcity prices itself. Ask the school which text before you ask anyone what they charge.

Third is the optional themes, for the same reason: Ethics and Philosophy and Contemporary Society are widely taught, Aesthetics is not. Fourth is whether the internal assessment is in scope. Supervising a stimulus-based essay is project work spread over months, including reading a draft once and carefully, and it belongs on a quote as its own line rather than hidden in a weekly rate.

Fifth is timing. Availability tightens in the final two terms and the hours themselves do less, because a student six weeks from the papers cannot absorb a new theme and can only improve technique. Sixth is session length. Philosophy works badly in sixty-minute blocks and well in ninety, so compare quotes per session rather than per hour or you will conclude that the more expensive tutor is the cheaper one. None of these six is about the tutor being better. They are about what is being bought, and any provider who cannot explain which of the six is driving their number is quoting on instinct.

03

What the hours are buying: the four components

Philosophy is assessed through two papers at Standard Level and three at Higher, plus the internally assessed stimulus essay. The components are unusually independent of one another, which is good news for budgeting: a family can buy help with the prescribed text alone and leave the core theme to the school, and the two will not interfere. Few subjects allow that kind of targeted purchase, and it is worth exploiting rather than buying a blanket weekly arrangement that covers everything at once.

The weightings matter to where money goes. At Standard Level the first paper carries roughly half the grade, which makes the core theme and the single optional theme the obvious priority. At Higher Level that share falls and the two additional components take weight, so the hours have to be split more evenly, with the unseen-text paper usually the most neglected and therefore the best marginal buy. A Higher Level candidate who has never attempted that paper is typically two to four hours away from a reusable method, which is the cheapest band movement available anywhere in the subject.

Confirm the current weightings and durations against the subject guide your child's school holds rather than against any figure found online, including this one. Guides are revised, and the version that applies is the one the school registered for. Ask the coordinator for the assessment outline in writing at the start of DP1; it is a five-minute request that prevents a tutor planning towards the wrong paper for a year. The same outline names the command terms and the assessment objectives, which is what a tutor should be planning sessions from rather than a textbook contents page.

Hours to marks: what each common Philosophy fix costs

The most useful thing a tutoring quote can tell you is not the rate but the number of hours. Philosophy has a short list of recurring faults, each with a fairly predictable repair time, and once you know which fault your child has you can price the fix rather than buy an open-ended arrangement. A diagnostic essay identifies the fault in one session.

The repairs divide into cheap and expensive. Technique faults are cheap: a student who summarises instead of reconstructing, or who never states an objection, can be retrained in a handful of marked essays because the problem is a habit. Content gaps are mid-priced and predictable: an optional theme takes around eight to twelve hours to teach to an examinable standard. Project supervision is the expensive item, not per hour but in total, because it stretches across months.

The table costs each at the middle of the published Dubai band for a qualified online subject tutor, which the market puts at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour. Those are market figures rather than ours, and they are there to let you sanity-check a quote rather than to set a price. What the table should make clear is that the cheapest intervention in this subject by a wide margin is fixing argument reconstruction early, because it pays on all four components at once. The costliest line is the one at the bottom of every column: a problem identified too late, where the hours are available and the time to use them is not.

05

The prescribed text: the cheapest marks in the subject

One component of Philosophy is fully knowable in advance. The school chooses a text from the published list, the examination asks an essay on that text, and the argument of a finished book does not change between sessions. A student who has mapped their text properly walks into that paper knowing roughly what can be asked of them, which is not true of any other component in the subject.

Mapping is the operative word, and it is different from reading. The product of a good prescribed-text block is a document in the student's own handwriting that sets out the text's major arguments premise by premise, names the standard objections to each, and records the author's own replies where the text makes them. Twenty pages of highlighted photocopy is not that. The map is what gets revised in April; the highlighting is not.

This is why the prescribed text is usually the best value block a Dubai family can buy, and why it is worth buying early. Six to eight sessions produces a map that serves the examination and, incidentally, teaches the reconstruction skill that lifts every other component. Starting it in the final term inverts the economics: the same hours then have to cover reading, mapping and timed practice at once, and something gets dropped. Ask the department in Year 11 or early DP1 which text has been chosen, and start the block in the first term rather than waiting for a mock result to prove it was needed.

06

The internal assessment: a stimulus that has to yield a real question

The internal assessment asks for roughly two thousand words examining a philosophical issue drawn from deliberately non-philosophical material: a film, a photograph, an advertisement, a song, a news report. Students choose the stimulus for interest and then discover it will not carry a question. A striking image that produces only the observation that identity is complicated has not yielded an issue; one that produces a specific question about whether personal identity survives a particular kind of change has.

That is where supervision earns its fee, and why this component should be priced separately from weekly teaching. The sequence is: test the stimulus for yield, settle one question narrow enough for two thousand words, choose two or three philosophers who speak to it directly rather than impressively, then read the student's own draft once against the criteria. Four to six sessions spread across months, not a block in the final fortnight.

The honesty boundary here is firm and worth stating before any money changes hands. A tutor may comment on one student-written draft, name a criterion that is not being met, point out that a premise is unsupported, or ask why a philosopher has been introduced. A tutor may not supply sentences, restructure the essay for the student, or hand back a version that only needs accepting. Ask any prospective tutor how they handle a draft and treat the word editing as a reason to look elsewhere. The stimulus essay is also the component where a late start is least recoverable, because the engagement with the material has to precede the analysis rather than be reconstructed from memory afterwards.

07

Where Dubai Philosophy candidates lose marks

  • Exposition without evaluation is the single commonest cause of a mid-band grade
  • Arguing for a view instead of testing the argument for it reads as advocacy
  • An attribution without textual support is not credited on the text paper
  • Essay length habits imported from History cause timing failures

The dominant fault is exposition without analysis. A student writes a clear, accurate account of what Mill argues and stops, because exposition feels like the work. The descriptors want the argument set out and then tested: a hidden premise named, an objection raised and answered, a judgement reached about whether the argument succeeds. Exposition alone sits in the middle bands however elegant it is, and the pattern is visible in a single marked essay.

Second is advocacy. Philosophy attracts students with strong views and the Ethics theme attracts them most. An essay that argues for a position reads as a position paper, and position papers are marked as such. The discipline to learn is that the question is almost never whether a view is right but whether the argument for it works, and students find that distinction genuinely difficult rather than merely unfamiliar.

Third is quotation discipline, which costs marks quietly. Claims about what a philosopher holds need textual support, and in the prescribed text paper especially an unsupported attribution is simply not credited. Fourth, and specific to Dubai cohorts, is pace: many candidates here write Philosophy essays at the length they write History essays and run out of time on the second question. Both are mechanical faults with mechanical fixes, which is the good news in a subject that otherwise resists quick repair. A single marked essay with the descriptors alongside it will usually show which two of these four a student has, and that is enough to price the work honestly.

08

Tutoring cost in context: Dubai fees and the 2026-27 freeze

Tutoring spend only makes sense against what a family is already paying. Dubai's private school sector served 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with the International Baccalaureate taking seven per cent of students against thirty-seven per cent for UK curricula. Diploma places sit at the upper end of the fee range in that market, and a Philosophy tutoring budget is a small increment on a large annual commitment.

The timing is also favourable. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For families planning two years of Diploma support, a frozen fee line makes the tutoring line easier to commit to and easier to compare against.

The sector is also expanding, which affects staffing and therefore the tutoring market. KHDA has reported that the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, following six openings in 2025-26 and a six per cent rise in enrolment. More Diploma places means more demand for a small pool of Philosophy specialists, which is a reason to book a scarce match early rather than a reason to pay more. The table below puts the tutoring numbers next to the fee line so the increment is visible rather than guessed at.

In-home tuition, permits and what to check before you pay

IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE at any price. Lessons for families in the Emirates are delivered live, one-to-one, over video, and the in-home service exists only in India. That is stated here rather than discovered after a deposit. The market figures above show what the alternative costs: published in-home bands run roughly AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table, with independents advertising higher, and a meaningful share of that hour pays for the drive rather than the teaching.

Whoever you hire, check the permit position. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. According to u.ae it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any figure you see quoted with scepticism.

Two further checks are worth making on a quote. First, ask whether the AED figure includes value added tax; we do not state the VAT treatment of tuition in the UAE on this page, because that depends on the provider's registration and on Federal Tax Authority rules rather than on anything a tutoring site can assert. Second, in Abu Dhabi specifically, press reporting indicates that ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, so never engage a child's own teacher privately without checking the current policy.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Where you live in Dubai changes the cost of tutoring in two concrete ways: how much of an in-home tutor's hour is paid travel, and how late a session has to start after the school run. Both show up on an invoice. These are the districts the enquiries come from most often.

Al Safa and Al Wasl

Central, close to several Diploma schools, and therefore the band where in-home rates are least inflated by travel. Even here a tutor crossing from the other side of the city at six in the evening is charging for forty minutes of Sheikh Zayed Road inside the hourly rate.

The Springs and The Lakes

Established villa communities with a short run to the Meadows and Ranches schools. Sessions here typically start at five. Families in this band often already pay for two or three subjects, which is why the question they ask first is how few Philosophy hours will do the job.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Production City

Peripheral and sparsely served, so an in-home tutor's quote here usually carries a visible travel premium or a two-hour minimum. The arithmetic that pushes these families online is simple: the same budget buys more teaching when none of it is spent on a car.

Dubai Festival City and Garhoud

Close to the older Deira-side schools with reasonable evening access. A band where group tuition centres are available and cheaper per head, which is worth comparing honestly: group provision works for content revision and not at all for the internal assessment.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

Dense, well-connected and price-sensitive, with many families comparing a tuition centre's group rate against one-to-one. For a minority subject like Philosophy there is usually no group option at all, which changes the comparison before it starts.

Town Square and Remraam

Newer, more affordable communities a long way from the established Diploma schools, where the daily commute already consumes an hour. Sessions start late here, and the saving from online delivery is as much in time as in money.

Dubai Creek Harbour

Recent high-rise development with a small, young school-age population and few nearby Diploma places, so students commute. Philosophy candidates in this band are often the only one in their year taking the subject, which removes any possibility of sharing a session.

Meydan and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Villa and townhouse communities with good road access and families who tend to buy longer sessions less frequently. Ninety minutes once a week is the common shape here, and for essay-based subjects it is the better shape anyway.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

The large, long-established Diploma schools

Bigger cohorts make a minority subject viable, so these are the schools where Philosophy is most likely to run every cycle. Ask the department which optional themes and which prescribed text they teach before you price any tutoring, because those two answers decide how scarce a suitable tutor is.

  • Dubai International Academy - Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy - Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Deira International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Schools where the option depends on opt-in numbers

At many Dubai Diploma schools a minority Group 3 subject runs only if enough students choose it, and the decision can come late in Year 11. Families here sometimes end up with a student taking Philosophy largely independently, which raises the number of paid hours required rather than the rate.

  • Uptown International School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Greenfield International School
  • Dwight School Dubai

Newer Diploma provision in the inland communities

Recently opened schools often build their Group 3 offer around the staff they have, so the themes taught can change between cohorts. That instability is worth knowing about when budgeting across two years, because a change of teacher between DP1 and DP2 can mean a change of optional theme as well.

  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • GEMS International School - Al Khail
  • Sunmarke School

These schools are named to describe the Dubai Diploma market this page addresses. Nothing here implies a partnership, endorsement or commercial relationship, and none is held.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the text and the themes, then ask the price

The useful first message names the prescribed text, the optional theme or themes, the level, and whether the internal assessment is in scope. Those four decide how scarce a suitable tutor is, and therefore what the honest rate is. A quote given before anyone knows which text your child was set is a guess dressed as a number.

  2. 02

A free diagnostic essay, marked in front of you

The first lesson costs nothing, is limited to one per student, and needs no card details. It is spent on one essay from a taught theme, marked against the published descriptors with the student watching, so you leave knowing which of the recurring faults you have and roughly how many hours it takes to repair. No sales pitch, and no package offered in the session.

  3. 03

Get the quote itemised before anything is booked

Weekly teaching, essay reading time, internal assessment supervision and any prescribed-text block should appear as separate lines with their own hour counts. That is the only form in which quotes from different providers can be compared, and it is also what stops supervision work being absorbed invisibly into a weekly rate.

  4. 04

Buy the block, not the year

Philosophy support works in blocks with a defined end: a prescribed text mapped, a theme made examinable, a reconstruction habit built, an internal assessment through its draft round. Each block has an hour count agreed in advance. Open-ended weekly arrangements are how families reach March having spent a great deal with nothing they can point at.

  5. 05

Review against marked work at each milestone

At the end of each block, at the mock session, and six weeks before the papers, the plan gets rebuilt from fresh marked evidence rather than from momentum. If the marks say the work is done, we say the work is done. A candidate reliably in the top bands with a submitted internal assessment does not need more hours.

  6. 06

Change tutor at no cost, no reason required

A different tutor costs nothing and needs no justification. In Philosophy the match is to a specific text and specific themes, so a mismatch is usually a matching error rather than a quality one, and it is cheaper to correct in week two than in month four. Any unused prepaid hours move with you.

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates in AED, published with their source and date

This page states the bands the Dubai market actually charges, names which provider publishes which figure, and dates the reading to October 2026. Three of the best-ranked IB tutoring pages for this city publish no price at all, and one of them asks the price in its own FAQ and declines to answer it.

Quotes itemised so they can be compared

Teaching, essay reading, prescribed-text work and internal assessment supervision are quoted separately with hour counts. A single blended hourly rate hides which of those you are actually buying, and in a subject where reading a draft takes as long as writing it, that distinction decides what the hour is worth.

Hours estimated against the specific fault

A diagnostic essay identifies which of the recurring Philosophy faults a student has, and each has a fairly predictable repair time. You get an hour count before you commit rather than an open invitation to keep booking, and the cheapest intervention is named first because it pays across all four components.

Matched to the prescribed text, not to the subject

Being set a less commonly taught text on the prescribed list narrows the pool of suitable tutors sharply. Online delivery is what makes that match findable at all, because the search runs across everyone who can teach your child at seven in the evening rather than everyone within driving distance of Al Safa.

The honesty boundary stated before you pay

The internal assessment is the student's own work. One round of comments on one student-written draft, pointed at criteria, with no sentences supplied and no restructuring done on their behalf. Businesses in this market sell completed coursework at four-figure prices; the consequence of buying it falls on the candidate.

No outcome promised at any price

Nobody can sell a grade, and a provider quoting a premium rate alongside an implied result is selling the wrong thing. What is offered here is an hour count against a named fault, marked evidence of whether it is closing, and an honest recommendation to stop when the marks say the work is finished.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does an IB Philosophy tutor charge per hour in Dubai?+

Published market rates in Dubai span roughly AED 45 to 650 an hour, and the spread reflects different products rather than different quality of the same product. Budget online platforms publish from AED 33 to 65. A qualified subject tutor delivering online sits around AED 150 to 300, which is where most families transact. Specialist IB rates run from AED 200 to 450 and above, with one named provider publishing AED 650. Those are each provider's own published figures, read in October 2026, and they are market rates rather than ours. Ask any quote whether essay reading time is billed separately.

Why do some Dubai tutors quote Philosophy above Maths?+

Two reasons, both structural. First, marking time: a Maths exploration can be checked in twenty minutes, while a Philosophy essay takes a tutor about as long to read properly as the student took to write it, so a tutor who includes reading in the rate is doing more unpaid work per billed hour. Second, scarcity: there are far fewer Philosophy specialists than Maths specialists anywhere, and if your school has set a less commonly taught prescribed text the pool shrinks again. Neither reason has anything to do with the subject being harder.

Should we book sixty or ninety minutes for a Philosophy session?+

Ninety, for anything involving essays. Reconstructing an argument, raising an objection, and then rewriting a paragraph in response does not fit into sixty minutes, and sessions that try end with the rewriting set as homework the student will not do. The practical consequence for budgeting is that quotes should be compared per session rather than per hour: a tutor at AED 250 for ninety minutes is cheaper per unit of work than one at AED 200 for sixty. Short sessions do make sense for the Higher Level unseen paper, where the drilling is narrow.

How many Philosophy hours does a Dubai DP2 student actually need?+

It depends on which fault the student has, which is why the first session should diagnose rather than teach. Technique repairs are cheap: retraining a student who summarises instead of reconstructing takes four to six marked essays. Teaching an untaught optional theme to an examinable standard takes eight to twelve hours. Internal assessment supervision takes four to six hours spread across months. A typical DP2 family buys between fifteen and twenty-five hours in total. A student starting in the final six weeks can still improve technique, but cannot acquire a theme, and should be told so.

Does the quoted AED rate include essay marking between sessions?+

Ask, in writing, because the answer changes the real price substantially. In Philosophy a full essay takes roughly as long to read and annotate as it took to write, so a tutor quoting AED 200 an hour with marking included may be better value than one quoting AED 150 with reading billed separately. Some providers include a fixed number of marked pieces per month; others bill reading time at the teaching rate. Neither is wrong, but comparing two quotes without knowing which model each uses produces a conclusion that is simply incorrect.

Is it cheaper to put two Philosophy students in one session?+

Per student, yes, and for some work it is also better: two candidates arguing against each other about whether an objection succeeds is closer to how philosophy is actually done than one student explaining it to an adult. The limits are real though. The internal assessment cannot be supervised in a pair, because the stimulus, the question and the draft are individual. And for a minority subject in Dubai there is often no second candidate available at the same level with the same prescribed text, which ends the discussion before cost enters it.

What does supervising the Philosophy internal assessment add to the cost?+

Typically four to six hours spread over several months, which at published Dubai market rates of AED 150 to 300 an hour is roughly AED 600 to 1,800. The hours are not continuous and that is the point: one to test whether the chosen stimulus yields a philosophical issue at all, one to narrow the question, one or two on choosing philosophers who speak to it, and one to read the student's own draft against the criteria. This should appear as its own line on a quote rather than absorbed into a weekly rate, because it is project supervision rather than teaching.

Does a Philosophy tutor cost more in the final term before exams?+

Availability tightens and rates firm up, but the more important change is that the hours do less. Six weeks out, a student cannot absorb an optional theme they were never taught, so the money buys technique and timing rather than knowledge. The same budget spent in DP1 buys both, plus the prescribed text mapped properly and the internal assessment supervised while it can still be redirected. Families who treat tutoring as an exam-term purchase pay the same rate for a narrower product, which is the most common avoidable waste in this market.

Our budget is AED 200 an hour. What does that buy for IB Philosophy?+

At AED 200 you are inside the published band for a qualified subject tutor delivering online, which in this market runs roughly AED 150 to 300. That buys someone who knows the course, can mark essays against the descriptors, and can take a student through the prescribed text properly. What it will not reliably buy is a named specialist with examining experience on a rarely taught text, where published rates reach AED 450 and above. If your budget is fixed, spend it on the prescribed text block and argument reconstruction first, because those pay across every component.

Can we book a short block rather than commit to a whole term?+

That is the shape we prefer, and it is the shape families should ask every provider for. Philosophy support divides naturally into blocks with a defined end: a prescribed text mapped in six to eight hours, an optional theme made examinable in eight to twelve, a reconstruction habit built in four to six, an internal assessment supervised through its draft round. Each has an agreed hour count before it starts. Open-ended weekly billing is how a family reaches March having spent several thousand dirhams with nothing specific completed.

What is the prescribed text paper in IB Philosophy?+

An essay on a single philosophical text that the school chooses from a published list, studied in depth across the course. The list includes works such as Plato's Republic, Descartes' Meditations, Hume's Enquiry, Mill's On Liberty, Nietzsche's On the Genealogy of Morality, de Beauvoir's The Second Sex, Confucius' Analects and the Tao Te Ching, among others. It is the most knowable component in the subject, because the argument of a finished book does not change, which makes it the best-value block to buy early and the cheapest place to find marks.

What is the difference between Philosophy at Higher and Standard Level?+

Higher Level candidates study two optional themes instead of one and sit an additional paper on unseen material about the nature of philosophical activity itself. Both levels take the compulsory core theme, study a prescribed text, and write the internally assessed stimulus essay. Because the extra components take weight, the first paper carries a smaller share of a Higher Level grade than a Standard Level one. Confirm current weightings with your school's coordinator. For budgeting, Higher Level means a wider scope and a smaller pool of suitable tutors, both of which raise what a good match costs.

What is the Philosophy internal assessment actually about?+

It asks for roughly two thousand words that take a deliberately non-philosophical stimulus, such as a film, an advertisement, a photograph or a news item, and extract and examine a philosophical issue from it. The common failure is choosing a stimulus for interest rather than for yield: a striking image that produces only the thought that identity is complicated has not given the student a question. One that produces a specific, arguable question has. Testing the stimulus for yield before anything is drafted is the single most valuable supervision hour in the subject.

Why is my child's Philosophy essay marked down for summarising?+

Because exposition is not analysis, and the descriptors separate the two sharply. A clear, accurate account of what a philosopher argues sits in the middle bands however well written it is. The marks above that require the argument to be tested: a hidden premise named, an objection raised and answered, and a judgement reached about whether the argument actually succeeds. This is the commonest fault in the subject and also the cheapest to fix, usually four to six marked essays, because it is a habit rather than a knowledge gap.

Is Philosophy a risky Group 3 choice for a Dubai student?+

It is less predictable than Economics and less content-heavy than History, which cuts both ways. Students who enjoy precise argument often do better here than in a subject that rewards memorised case studies. Students who write fluently but dislike being told their conclusion was not earned find it uncomfortable. Two practical Dubai-specific risks are worth weighing: the option may not run if too few students opt in, and if it does run the prescribed text chosen determines how easy outside support will be to find. Ask the department both questions in Year 11.

How do I check a Dubai Philosophy tutor is permitted to charge for lessons?+

Ask directly whether they hold the private tuition work permit. It was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation; u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years and that eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and students aged fifteen to eighteen. Those tutoring without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published. In Abu Dhabi, additional professional-ethics rules restrict school staff from tutoring their own enrolled students.
