IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The examiner question, answered without the marketing

An IB examiner is a person appointed by the International Baccalaureate to mark candidate work against a markscheme written for that session. The work arrives anonymously. The markscheme is supplied. Marking is sampled and checked by a team leader, and an examiner whose marking drifts from the standard is corrected or stood down. That is the whole of the job. It does not include setting papers, deciding grade boundaries, seeing future question papers, or knowing anything about an individual candidate in Dubai.

This matters because examiner status is the single most heavily marketed credential in this part of the market, and the premium end of Dubai pricing is built on it. One provider in this search advertises AED 650 an hour at the named-tutor and examiner end. Before paying that, it is worth knowing precisely what the status buys. The honest answer: calibration. Someone who has marked two hundred scripts against a markscheme has a very accurate internal model of where marks are actually awarded, as opposed to where a textbook suggests they ought to be. That is genuinely valuable and it is also not magic.

What it does not buy is access. Examiners work under confidentiality conditions. They cannot share live markschemes, cannot discuss specific scripts, and cannot tell your child what is coming. Any tutor implying otherwise is either exaggerating or describing something that would be a breach. In practice the most useful examiner-experienced tutors talk about marking behaviour in general terms, which is exactly what a student needs, and nothing about any particular paper.

IB Gram's position on this is deliberately narrow. We do not describe a tutor as an IB examiner unless that person's examining is specified by subject and component on their profile, and we do not use examining experience to imply any access to marking, boundaries or paper content, because no such access exists to imply. Where a tutor has that experience it is listed as what it is: evidence of calibration in one subject, for one kind of component. A parent reading a profile should be able to tell, in one line, whether the claim is about a specific paper in a specific subject or whether it is a general impression being sold at a higher hourly rate, and we would rather make that distinction for you than leave you to infer it from a biography written to flatter.

The rest of this page is about the thing the examiner search is really reaching for: markscheme literacy. How points-marked and markband-marked components differ, what a best-fit judgement means, why your school's internal assessment mark can move after moderation, and what to practise. All of it is teachable from published criteria by a tutor who has taught the course, examiner or not. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, scheduled around a Dubai school week in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses, as home visits are a service we run only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Marking works differently across the IB programmes, and the examiner question lands differently in each. The Diploma has external examiners; the Middle Years Programme is mostly internally assessed against criteria; the Primary Years Programme has no external marking at all.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with externally marked papers plus internally assessed components, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. External papers are marked by appointed examiners against session-specific markschemes; internal assessment is marked by the school and then moderated. This is the only programme where the word examiner has its full technical meaning.

Dubai DP candidates sit the same papers as candidates everywhere, marked by the same pool of examiners, which is worth saying because parents sometimes assume regional adjustment exists. It does not. What is local is the school's internal assessment calendar and its own marking standard before moderation, and those vary noticeably between IB World Schools in the emirate.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Assessment against four criteria per subject, each out of eight, judged on a best-fit basis against descriptors. Teachers mark; there is no external examiner for most of it, although schools may opt into eAssessment at the end of MYP 5. Understanding best-fit judgement is more useful here than anything an external examiner could offer.

Dubai MYP parents often read a criterion score as a percentage and panic unnecessarily, or relax when they should not. A tutor's first job with an MYP report is to translate the descriptors into plain language and identify which criterion is actually holding the grade down, which is usually one of the four rather than all of them.

DP coreAges 16-19 · across both DP years

Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

Both are assessed against published criteria with word limits, and both are externally marked. The Extended Essay runs to 4,000 words with a reflective process supervised by the school; the Theory of Knowledge essay is written on a prescribed title with its own limit. Criterion structure matters more here than in any paper-based component.

For Dubai students, the practical difficulty with both is calendar rather than content: supervisors set internal deadlines that differ by school, and the summer between DP1 and DP2 is when Extended Essay progress most often stalls while families travel. A tutor can only support process, questioning and feedback; the writing is entirely the student's.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Combines at least two DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and additional core elements. The DP courses inside it are examined exactly as they are for Diploma candidates, so marking questions for CP students are really questions about those specific subject papers.

Only a small number of UAE schools run the Career-related Programme, so local tutor coverage is thin and most matches for it come from our wider pool. The lesson format is unchanged: one-to-one over live video at a time that fits a Dubai evening.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, each subject is paired with the component where marking behaviour matters most. This is the part of the course where knowing how marks are awarded changes the grade more than knowing additional content would.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Extended-response questions are point-marked against specific acceptable statements, so an answer can be chemically correct and still miss the marking points. The scientific investigation is criterion-marked on a best-fit basis, which rewards a tightly controlled question over an ambitious one.

Physics

HL and SL

Method and reasoning marks are awarded for stated steps, which means a correct final answer with no visible working scores below its potential. Uncertainty treatment in the investigation is where criterion marks concentrate and where most candidates underprepare.

Biology

HL and SL

Long answers are marked against a list of creditable points, so breadth of relevant statements beats depth on one. Candidates who write beautifully about one idea routinely score below candidates who make five accurate points in plainer language.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Marking separates method from accuracy, and follow-through credit means a single arithmetic slip need not cost the whole question if the method is visible. HL Paper 3 rewards structured investigation and communication of reasoning as much as the final result.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics answers earn marks for interpretation in context, not only for the calculation. A regression quoted without a sentence about what it means in the scenario leaves interpretation marks unclaimed.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams carry discrete marks for correct axes, labels and shifts, each one individually creditable. HL quantitative questions are point-marked with working credited, while essay-style answers are judged against level descriptors where evaluation separates the top band.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Entirely markband-based, judged holistically against descriptors for analysis, focus, organisation and language. There is no list of points to collect, which is why students trained on content-heavy subjects often misjudge what a strong answer looks like here.

History

HL and SL

Source questions are point-marked for specific analytical moves; essays are markband-judged on argument and use of evidence. Narrating events accurately without arguing a position is the most common way to sit in the middle band indefinitely.

Business Management

HL and SL

Application to the stimulus is separately creditable from tool knowledge, so a correctly drawn framework that never mentions the case material forfeits the application and evaluation marks that decide the grade.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Assessed against criteria on a best-fit basis, with the quality of the knowledge question doing most of the work. Choice of prescribed title effectively sets the ceiling, and no amount of later polishing recovers a poor choice.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All formats below are delivered one-to-one over live video. They differ in what the hour is spent on, and marking practice is the one most families underuse.

Marking practice sessions

The student writes an answer, then marks it themselves against published criteria with the tutor questioning each decision. Students who have had to award marks stop writing answers that cannot be credited. It is the most direct way to transfer whatever calibration a tutor has.

  • Student awards the marks, tutor challenges each one
  • Criteria used are the published descriptors, nothing restricted
  • Discrepancies between student and tutor marks become the lesson
  • Repeated on the same question type until judgement stabilises

Weekly one-to-one subject teaching

A fixed weekly slot with one tutor for one subject, working from the school's scheme of work and the current subject guide. Content and technique in whatever proportion the diagnosis calls for, with a short written note after each session naming the next target.

  • Same tutor each week, same subject and level
  • Follows the school's sequence, not a generic course
  • Written note after each session
  • Recording available on request

Free diagnostic first lesson

A full lesson at no cost, built around a marked script you supply. The purpose is for you to test the tutor's reading of the marking rather than their biography. Bring the script and the question paper if the school released it.

  • No payment and no card details beforehand
  • Bring a marked answer and the question if available
  • Ends with a written statement of where marks were lost
  • Change the match afterwards at no cost

Core component feedback

Criterion-based feedback on Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and internal assessment material the student has already written. The tutor reads, questions and references the descriptors. Nothing is drafted, rewritten or supplied, and the school supervisor stays formally responsible.

  • Feedback tied to criterion descriptors
  • Research question and scope critique before writing begins
  • Student makes every change themselves
  • Written statement of what the tutor will not do

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB examiner tutor in Dubai can honestly offer

Examining is marking. An appointed examiner receives anonymised candidate work and a markscheme produced for that session, applies it, and has their marking sampled and checked by a team leader. Consistency with the standard is the whole of the quality control. An examiner who marks generously or harshly relative to the standard is pulled back into line or removed from the team, which is why examiner calibration is real: it was enforced on them.

The transferable benefit is therefore a reliable internal model of what gets credited. An experienced marker knows that a particular phrasing earns the mark and a near-miss does not, that a method line left out costs more than an arithmetic slip, that an essay with a thin argument and excellent prose sits lower than most students expect. Those judgements are hard to acquire from a textbook and relatively quick to transfer to a student through marking practice.

The things examining does not confer are worth listing, because they are what the advertising implies. An examiner does not write the papers. An examiner does not set or know grade boundaries, which are determined after marking for each session. An examiner has no sight of future question papers. An examiner cannot discuss any individual script, including a script they marked. And examiner appointments are subject-specific and component-specific: marking one paper in one subject says nothing about another.

So the correct version of the examiner question is not whether a tutor has examined, but whether they can mark your child's work accurately against published criteria and explain the decisions. That is a skill plenty of experienced subject teachers have without having examined, and one some examiners are poor at transferring. Ask for a demonstration rather than a title, and the premium question answers itself.

02

Two marking models, and why students misjudge one of them

IB components are marked in one of two broadly different ways, and the distinction decides how a student should write. Point-marked questions have a list of creditable statements, and each one earns its mark independently. Markband questions are judged holistically against level descriptors, where the examiner decides which band the answer best fits as a whole and then places it within that band.

Students handle point-marked questions badly in a predictable way: they write one idea beautifully. In a question worth five marks against five creditable points, an elegant essay about the first point scores one. The correct behaviour is to make the required number of distinct, accurate, relevant statements, which often means writing in plainer language than a student thinks is appropriate. Science and quantitative subjects are full of these questions, and the fix is almost purely behavioural.

Markband questions fail differently. Here a student who collects points produces a list that no band describes well, because the descriptors reward sustained argument, focus and organisation rather than coverage. English, History essays, Theory of Knowledge and most criterion-marked coursework work this way. A candidate trained on point-marked habits writes something comprehensive and lands mid-band, and no amount of additional content moves it.

The practical consequence for tutoring is that a student needs to know which model they are facing before they start writing, and most can tell from the mark allocation and the command term within a few seconds of practice. Teaching that recognition is quick. Not teaching it leaves a student optimising for the wrong thing in half their papers.

03

Why your school's internal assessment mark can change

Internal assessment is marked by the school against the published criteria and then moderated by the IB. Moderation compares the school's marking against the standard using a sample, and can adjust the whole cohort's marks up or down. This is routine and it is not a judgement about an individual student. It is also the thing that surprises Dubai parents most, because a mark that appeared on a school report in February can arrive differently in July.

Two consequences follow. First, a school mark is a prediction, not a result, and a family planning around it should treat it as such. Second, the way to protect a mark is to make it unambiguously defensible against the descriptors, because a piece of work that sits clearly inside a band is less exposed to adjustment than one that sits on a boundary. That is a real argument for working on criterion clarity rather than on general polish.

The practical work is unglamorous. Does the research question name the variables? Does the method state what is controlled and how? Is each criterion's evidence actually present and findable, rather than implied across several pages? Does the work stay within the stated limit? A piece that answers yes to all of those is doing what moderation checks for, and a tutor can help a student get there without writing a word of it.

What a tutor cannot do is tell you how your school historically fares in moderation, predict an adjustment, or intervene in it. Those are matters for the school's IB coordinator, who is also the person who would request an enquiry upon results if a grade looked wrong after publication. Any tutor offering to influence a moderated mark is describing something that does not exist.

04

How to check an examiner claim in one conversation

  • Ask for subject, component and period; expect a specific answer
  • Ask whether the appointment is current or historical
  • Do not ask for scripts or markschemes; nobody may share them
  • Hand over an unmarked answer and ask for marks with reasons
  • Weigh teaching experience in the exact course at least as heavily

Verification here is awkward, because the honest answer to the obvious request is no. You cannot ask to see marked scripts, because confidentiality forbids it. You cannot ask for a markscheme, for the same reason. A tutor who produces either should worry you rather than reassure you. So the check has to be about specificity and about demonstration.

Specificity first. Ask which subject, which component, and roughly which period. An honest answer sounds like: Biology Paper 2, for several sessions up to a stated year. A vague answer that avoids naming the component is usually a signal that the status is being borrowed from somewhere, perhaps from an agency's pool rather than from this individual. Ask also whether the appointment is current, because examiner teams change and a lapsed appointment is still useful experience but should not be stated in the present tense.

Then demand a demonstration, which is the part that actually matters. Hand over an unmarked answer of your child's, or a past-paper answer written in the trial lesson, and ask the tutor to mark it and explain each mark. A calibrated marker will be quick, decisive and specific, and will explain why the near-miss phrasing did not earn credit. An uncalibrated one will give generous marks and general praise. You do not need subject knowledge to tell the difference, because the first sounds like a rule being applied and the second sounds like an opinion.

Finally, treat the status as one input rather than the decision. The best outcome for most students is a tutor who has taught the course to examination and can mark accurately against published criteria. Where examining experience sits on top of that, it is a bonus. Where it is offered instead of it, it is a marketing line with a price attached.

05

What beats examiner status: markscheme literacy the student owns

The deepest version of this advantage is not a tutor who knows how marks are awarded. It is a student who knows. A candidate who can look at a question and predict what the markscheme wants is self-correcting in every piece of work between now and the examination, which no number of paid hours replicates.

Building that takes a specific routine. The student writes an answer under time. The student then marks it against the published criteria, awarding and justifying every mark, before seeing any model answer. The tutor marks the same answer separately. Then the two compare, and every disagreement is examined: why did the student think that sentence earned credit? What was the examiner-style reason it did not? Disagreements are the content of the lesson.

Two things happen over four or five rounds. The student's marking converges towards the tutor's, which is the measurable outcome, and the student's writing changes to produce creditable material, which is the real outcome. Most students start by over-marking their own work substantially. Watching that gap close is one of the clearest leading indicators available, and it is visible long before a school grade moves.

Everything in that routine uses published criteria, past papers in the public domain and the student's own writing. No restricted material is needed, which is why a well-prepared subject specialist can run it. Published syllabus documents, past papers and criteria are referenced and linked from official sources rather than redistributed, since reproducing board material is a copyright problem and, for unreleased material, an integrity problem as well.

06

Where the marks actually go, by component

Lost marks are not randomly distributed. Across Dubai DP work we see the same handful of patterns, and they cluster by component type rather than by subject. Short structured questions lose marks to incomplete statements: the student knows the idea and expresses two-thirds of it. Extended responses lose marks to command-term misreads and to argument that is asserted rather than evidenced. Mathematics loses marks to absent working, which forfeits method credit and blocks follow-through.

Coursework loses marks earlier than anyone expects, at the design stage, where a research question too broad to control caps several criteria at once. Oral components lose marks to under-rehearsal of structure rather than to language, since students who have practised the shape of the response handle the unexpected text or prompt far better. And every component loses marks to the word and time limits, which are hard edges rather than guidelines.

The diagnostic value of knowing this is that it turns a vague worry into a short list of checks. Look at a marked script and ask which of these patterns it shows. Usually one dominates, and that one is worth four sessions of attention. Spreading the same four sessions across everything the syllabus contains produces much less movement, which is the central argument for diagnosing before teaching.

A caution on figures: component weightings and limits vary by subject and change when a subject guide is revised. The table below gives the shape of the thing, and your child's own subject guide and the school's assessment calendar are the authorities. Ask the school's IB coordinator if a weighting matters to a decision you are making.

What the premium end of the Dubai market charges, and when it is worth it

Published rates in Dubai put examiner-branded tutoring at the top of the market. BartyED advertises AED 650 an hour at the premium named end. Below that, exam-level IB and IGCSE specialists run around AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table reaching AED 450 and beyond for specialist exam-year work. Qualified subject tutors online sit roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Budget online provision advertises from around AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik at AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya at AED 33 to 52.

Those figures are other providers' published prices with their names attached, read in October 2026. They are not IB Gram's price list, and the spread is the useful information: the premium band is roughly double the specialist band, and the question is what the extra buys. Our honest answer is scarcity and reassurance rather than a different teaching method. The marking calibration an examiner brings is real, and it is also transferable from a specialist who marks accurately against published criteria.

Where the premium is defensible is a narrow case: a candidate already performing near the top of a subject, where the remaining marks are in judgement rather than knowledge, and where the component is one the tutor has specifically marked. Where it is not defensible is the much more common case of a student losing marks to command terms, absent working or a badly scoped internal assessment. Those are mid-band problems with mid-band solutions, and paying premium rates for them buys nothing extra.

In-home tutoring in Dubai sits in its own band of roughly AED 180 to 500 once travel is priced in, per Bestimate and local home-tutor listings. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so that band is context rather than an option we sell. Monthly packages advertised locally include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Scheduling, delivery and honest coverage for Dubai families

Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, on a shared screen, scheduled around a Dubai school week in Gulf Standard Time. Marking practice suits this format unusually well, because the answer, the criteria and the marks can all sit on one screen and be saved. After each session a short written note names what was covered and the next target. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India, and we would rather state that than let a page imply otherwise.

On timing, the practical Dubai constraints are the school run, after-school activities and the evening homework window, which is why most of our sessions land between 16:30 and 20:30. During Ramadan many families move sessions to a post-Iftar slot, and that is straightforward to arrange with notice. Gulf Standard Time also sits conveniently between South Asia and Europe, which widens the pool of specialists available at a Dubai-friendly hour.

Coverage is uneven and worth stating. Where a request is for a specific component of a specific subject, and particularly where examining experience in that component is wanted, the pool is small and the match may take one to two weeks. In the February to May window it can take longer, because the whole emirate wants the same thing simultaneously. If we cannot cover it, we say so rather than substituting a general tutor and leaving you to discover the gap.

Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the match comes from our wider pool of IB subject teachers in other time zones, at a Dubai-friendly hour. The format and subject depth are unchanged. Where we think the request itself is wrong, for instance a premium examiner match for a student whose marks are being lost to absent working, we will say that too and propose the cheaper thing that will actually help.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities where the examiner question comes up most

The premium end of the tutoring market advertises hardest in the communities below, which is why parents there see examiner claims most often and ask about them first.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer senior provision with a fast-growing Diploma intake and high willingness to pay at the premium end. Parents here most often arrive having been quoted an examiner rate and wanting to know whether it is worth it.

Arabian Ranches

Established villa community with long-standing school links, where families compare tutors informally and reputations travel. The useful conversation here is about which component a tutor has actually marked.

Motor City

Mid-sized school cohorts with a mix of curricula, so Diploma candidates are a minority among their neighbours and advice from other parents is often about a different qualification entirely.

Dubai Sports City

Training-heavy schedules mean sessions land late, and students arrive tired. Marking practice works better than content delivery in that slot, which suits markscheme work well.

The Greens and The Views

Apartment living close to several senior schools. Requests concentrate on essay-based subjects where markband judgement, rather than content recall, is the obstacle.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Rapidly grown community with students spread across many schools, so internal assessment deadlines in one household can differ from a neighbour's by a month.

Jumeirah Golf Estates

Smaller cohort, frequent travel, and a tendency for Extended Essay work to stall over the summer break between the two Diploma years.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai IB World Schools with established Diploma cohorts

Internal assessment marking standards differ between these schools before moderation, which is why two students with similar work can receive different school marks. Knowing where a school historically sits relative to moderation is the school's own information, not a tutor's, and a tutor should not pretend otherwise.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

Which paper, which internal assessment, which oral. Marking behaviour differs sharply between components, and a request phrased at subject level gets matched less accurately than one phrased at component level. Include the school and the assessment calendar if you have it.

  2. 02

We state what the tutor has actually marked

Where a tutor has examining experience, we name the subject and the component and whether it is current. Where they do not, we say that and describe their teaching history instead. We do not advertise unevidenced examiner status at any price.

A full first lesson at no cost. Hand over an unmarked answer and ask the tutor to mark it and justify each mark. That demonstration tells you more about calibration than any biography, and it costs nothing to run.

  4. 04

    Set a marking-practice routine

The student writes, self-marks against published criteria, then compares with the tutor's marking. Disagreements become the lesson. We agree how often this runs and what else the sessions cover, in writing, before the first paid hour.

  5. 05

Review the convergence at session four

The measurable indicator is how far the student's self-marking has moved towards accurate marking. If it has not moved, we change the approach or the tutor. If it has, the writing usually follows, and we set the next target.

  6. 06

Escalate to the school where that is the right route

Moderation outcomes, results enquiries and assessment calendars belong to the school's IB coordinator. We will tell you when a question is theirs rather than ours, including when it means you do not need more tutoring.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We do not sell unevidenced examiner status

A tutor is described as having examining experience only where the subject and component are specified on their profile. We never use examining to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content, because no such access exists.

Calibration taught, not just claimed

Marking practice is a format we run deliberately: the student marks their own work against published criteria and compares with the tutor. Convergence is measurable, and it transfers the judgement to the person sitting the paper.

Published criteria only

Everything we teach from is in the public domain or supplied by the student's own school. We link official syllabus and past-paper sources rather than redistributing board material, and no tutor shares restricted markschemes.

Honest about where the premium helps

We will tell you when a cheaper specialist match solves the actual problem. A student losing marks to absent working does not need the top of the market, and pretending otherwise would be easy money and bad advice.

Figures attributed, never implied as ours

Every AED figure here is another provider's published rate, named and dated. We do not present market bands as our prices and we publish no statistics about our own results that we cannot evidence.

Coverage limits stated before you commit

Component-specific requests take longer to match, especially between February and May. If we cannot cover it from UAE-based tutors we say so and explain where the match would come from, before you have paid anything.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does an IB examiner actually do during a marking session?+

They receive anonymised candidate work and a markscheme written for that session, apply it, and have their marking sampled and checked by a team leader. Consistency with the published standard is the entire quality-control mechanism, and an examiner whose marking drifts is corrected or removed from the team. They do not write papers, do not set grade boundaries, and do not see questions in advance. They also cannot discuss any individual script, including ones they marked. Understanding that narrow job description is the fastest way to judge which examiner claims in Dubai advertising are meaningful and which are decoration.

Is an examiner-experienced tutor better than an experienced subject teacher?+

Not automatically. Examining builds accurate calibration about where marks are actually awarded, which is genuinely useful and hard to get from a textbook. Teaching the course to examination builds knowledge of how students learn it, where they stall and how to sequence a recovery. The best match usually has both, and plenty of excellent teachers have the second without the first. What settles it is a demonstration: hand over an unmarked answer and ask the tutor to mark it and justify every mark. Decisive, specific marking with reasons beats any title on a profile.

Can an examiner tutor tell my child what is on the next paper?+

No, and an offer to do so should end the conversation. Examiners mark completed scripts; they have no sight of future question papers, and they work under confidentiality conditions that prohibit sharing markschemes or discussing specific scripts. Anyone implying advance knowledge is either exaggerating for effect or describing a breach. The useful version of that help is entirely legitimate and entirely different: teaching your child to predict what a markscheme will reward for a given command term and mark allocation, which is a skill they can apply to any question on any paper.

How do I verify that a tutor has really examined for the IB?+

Ask three narrow questions: which subject, which component, and whether the appointment is current or historical. An honest answer names a specific paper and a period. A vague answer that avoids the component usually means the status is borrowed from an agency's pool rather than held by this individual. Do not ask for scripts or markschemes, because nobody is permitted to show them, and a tutor who produces either is a warning rather than a reassurance. Then ask for a live marking demonstration on your child's work, which is the only check that tests the thing you are actually buying.

Are IB papers marked by collecting points or by overall impression?+

Both, depending on the component, and the distinction changes how a student should write. Point-marked questions have a list of creditable statements, each earning its mark independently, so making five plain accurate points beats writing elegantly about one. Markband components are judged holistically against level descriptors, where sustained argument, focus and organisation decide the band and extra coverage adds nothing. Science short questions and mathematics method marks sit in the first category; English papers, History essays and Theory of Knowledge sit in the second. Many students optimise for the wrong model in half their papers without ever being told.

What is a best-fit judgement in IB marking?+

It is how markband and criterion components are assessed. Rather than adding up points, the marker reads the whole response, decides which level descriptor it best matches overall, and then places it within that band. A response does not have to meet every phrase in a descriptor to sit in that band, and strength in one area does not offset a clear gap in another. The practical consequence for a student is that polish does not move a band; the descriptor's named qualities do. That is why criterion-mapping a piece of coursework before writing is worth more than editing afterwards.

Why did my child's internal assessment mark change after it was submitted?+

Internal assessment is marked by the school against the published criteria and then moderated by the IB, which compares the school's marking against the standard using a sample and can adjust the whole cohort up or down. It is routine and it is not a judgement about one student. The practical lesson is that a school mark is a prediction rather than a result, and that work sitting clearly inside a band is less exposed to adjustment than work on a boundary. Questions about a specific moderation outcome belong with the school's IB coordinator, who is also the person who can request a results enquiry.

Can a tutor show my child an official IB markscheme?+

No. Markschemes are confidential to the marking team for a session, and sharing one would breach the conditions an examiner works under. It is also unnecessary. Published assessment criteria, descriptors and past papers from official sources contain enough to teach marking judgement properly, and that is what our tutors work from. We reference and link official syllabus and past-paper pages rather than redistributing board documents, because reproducing them is a copyright problem and, in the case of unreleased material, an academic-integrity problem for the candidate as well.

Why do two students with similar knowledge get different IB marks?+

Usually because one writes creditable material and the other writes correct material. In point-marked questions a partially stated idea earns nothing, so a student who knows the concept but expresses two-thirds of it loses the mark. In markband components a student who lists accurate content without an argument sits mid-band regardless of how much they know. Mathematics adds a third route: a correct answer with no visible working forfeits method credit and blocks follow-through. None of those gaps is a knowledge gap, which is why they respond quickly to marking practice rather than to more content.

Does examining experience help with the Extended Essay?+

It can help with criterion judgement, since the Extended Essay is externally assessed against published criteria with a 4,000-word limit. What it cannot change is the boundary around the work. The essay must be the student's own, the school supervisor is formally responsible for the process and its reflective sessions, and a tutor's role is questioning, criterion-based feedback and research-method critique. The most valuable intervention happens before writing, on the research question's scope, and that needs a subject specialist who understands what can be investigated, not necessarily someone who has marked essays.

Should we ask the school for an enquiry upon results if a grade looks wrong?+

That decision sits with the school's IB coordinator, who submits any formal enquiry; a tutor has no role in it and cannot influence an outcome. What a tutor can usefully do beforehand is help you understand whether the result is surprising for defensible reasons, by looking at the marked mock evidence and the pattern of the student's work. Ask the coordinator about the process, the deadline and any cost implication, because those are set by the board and the school rather than negotiable. Treat any tutor who offers to get a grade changed as making a claim they cannot support.

How can my child learn to mark their own work accurately?+

With a routine that takes four or five rounds to bite. The student writes an answer under time, then marks it against the published criteria, awarding and justifying every mark before seeing any model answer. The tutor marks the same answer separately. Then they compare, and every disagreement is examined in detail. Most students over-mark their own work substantially at first, and watching that gap close is one of the clearest progress indicators available, visible well before a school grade moves. The eventual payoff is self-correction in every piece of work between now and the examination.

Does IB Gram advertise tutors as IB examiners?+

Only where the examining is specified by subject and component on that tutor's profile, and never as an implied route to marking, boundaries or paper content. We take that position because the alternative is the most common overstatement in this market and because unverifiable credential claims are a liability for a platform and a false signal for a parent. If examining experience in your child's exact component is what you want and we cannot evidence it, we will say so and propose a specialist who can demonstrate accurate marking instead.

How quickly can you match a Dubai student to a tutor for a specific DP component?+

Subject-level requests at common levels are usually matched within a few days. Component-specific requests, particularly where examining experience in that component is wanted, take longer and can run to one or two weeks, with the February to May window the tightest because demand across the emirate peaks at once. If no UAE-based specialist is free we say so before you commit and match from our wider pool of IB subject teachers in other time zones, keeping the session at a Dubai-friendly hour on Gulf Standard Time. The subject depth and the one-to-one online format do not change.

Ask for the marking, not the title

If you are considering an IB examiner tutor in Dubai, the useful test takes twenty minutes. Ask which subject and component the tutor has marked and whether that is current. Then hand over an unmarked answer of your child's and ask for the marks with a reason attached to each one. Decisive, specific marking against published criteria is what you are actually paying for, and it is visible immediately. Lessons from IB Gram run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with marking practice built in and a written note after every session. Tell us the subject, the level and the component, and we will tell you honestly what we can evidence.
