Edexcel IGCSE History 4HI1 Home Tutor in Dubai

Most families searching for an Edexcel IGCSE History 4HI1 home tutor in Dubai are trying to solve a visibility problem: somebody competent in the room, and some way of knowing whether it is working. This page is about the second half. It sets out the written evidence a parent should receive every week, how to read a marked band without having studied history, and why IB Gram delivers 4HI1 as one-to-one online tuition rather than a visit to your address.

  • An annotated extended answer with its band after every session
  • A per-question timing log whenever a full paper is sat
  • A ranked weakness list from session one, revisited at half term
  • Online one to one; IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The problem with tutoring is not teaching quality. It is that you cannot see it

An Edexcel IGCSE History 4HI1 home tutor in Dubai is, for most families, an attempt to make tutoring visible. Somebody arrives, works at the dining table for an hour, and leaves. You can see that it happened. What you usually cannot see is whether anything changed, because history improvement does not announce itself in a child's mood. A student can enjoy a session enormously, feel more confident about Germany or the Middle East, and write the same middling essay in the mock six weeks later.

In-home tuition exists in Dubai and is widely advertised. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. For UAE families, tuition is one to one, online, over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. The reason this page spends its time on evidence rather than on presence is that presence is the weaker proxy. A visit tells you an hour was bought. An annotated essay with a mark, a band and the one change that would move it tells you what the hour did.

History is unusually generous in this respect, because its output is written. Every session can leave a document. The mark on an extended answer, the band it sits in against the published descriptors, the per-question timing log from a full paper, the number of anchor dates a student can reproduce from blank paper, the position of a weakness on a ranked list drawn up in week one. Those are all comparable month to month, and none of them require a parent to know anything about the interwar period.

Four things make this harder in Dubai specifically. The entered options vary by school, so there is no standard syllabus to measure against without asking the humanities lead first. The KHDA mandatory subjects sit alongside the IGCSE options, so the student's available writing time is smaller than a British timetable implies. Mock weeks and school assessment weeks interrupt the measurement rhythm. And the market itself is opaque, with several providers publishing satisfaction figures and predicted grades that carry no sample size, no date and no method.

So the test this page proposes is one you can apply to any provider in this market, including us. What arrives in writing, how often, and does it contain a figure you can compare to last month's figure. Everything below is an answer to that question for 4HI1 history, plus the honest version of what a home tutor would and would not add, and what to do when the evidence says the tutoring is not working. It is written to be used by a parent who has no intention of learning the interwar period, because that is the parent most tutoring pages quietly assume does not exist.

At a glance

  • In-home history tuition is available in Dubai; IB Gram is not one of its providers
  • Lessons are delivered one to one and online over live video, in Gulf Standard Time
  • Every session should leave a marked document behind, not a verbal summary
  • Four measurements are enough to judge progress: band, timing, retrieval, weakness rank
  • A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback; submitted work stays the student's own
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Each route into and out of 4HI1 produces different evidence, and knowing which evidence to ask for is most of the work of supervising a tutor.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE History (4HI1)

Two written papers, one on depth studies and one combining a source investigation with a breadth study in change. Schools choose the periods from the specification's bank, so the measurable unit is the marked extended answer rather than a topic test. Confirm current paper durations and weightings on the board's own site before building a schedule.

In Dubai the practical evidence problem is that school assessment calendars differ widely between British-curriculum schools, so one child's mock is another child's ordinary week. That makes internally generated evidence, marked by the tutor against the published descriptors, more reliable for month-to-month comparison than school marks, which arrive on the school's timetable rather than yours.

CIEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE History (0470/0977)

The alternative route in the UAE. Content overlaps heavily, but paper structure and source question conventions differ enough that a mark gained on one board's paper is not evidence of readiness for the other. If evidence is the point, the paper it came from has to match the entry.

Dubai families often hold mixed revision material because children move schools inside the city. Before trusting any mark as evidence, check that the practice paper carried the same code as the entry. A strong score on the wrong board's paper is the most misleading single document in a Dubai student's folder.

NEXTAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level and IB Diploma history after Year 11

Both post-16 routes raise the writing demand sharply and both assess extended independent work. The evidence habits built at IGCSE transfer directly: a student who is used to receiving a band and a single change to make will handle Diploma or A Level feedback far better than one used to being told it was fine.

Dubai Year 11 students choose between the two routes in the spring term, and the choice is better made on evidence than on preference. A student whose source answers have climbed steadily and whose essays still narrate is telling you something useful about which course will suit them, and that pattern is visible in a folder of marked work.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the 4HI1 options a Dubai school may enter, described here by the evidence each one produces when it is going well. Your child sits a selected combination.

Germany: development of dictatorship, 1918-45

Depth study option

Progress shows as precision: named legislation and dates appearing in paragraphs that previously said the government. If the reproduced timeline is accurate and the essays still narrate, the problem is structure rather than knowledge.

Russia and the Soviet Union, 1905-24

Depth study option

The clearest early evidence here is a blank-paper timeline with 1905, February 1917 and October 1917 correctly placed. Students who cannot produce that sequence cannot write causation, and the gap is visible in one twelve-minute exercise.

The USA, 1918-41

Depth study option

Watch for the shift from listing New Deal agencies to assessing their effect. That single change usually moves a band, and it is easy to see in two marked essays side by side without knowing the period.

Colonial rule and the nationalist challenge in India, 1919-47

Depth study option

Frequently entered in UAE schools. Progress shows as the student weighing competing pressures on British policy rather than recounting campaigns, and as named legislation replacing general description of unrest.

Changes in medicine, c1848-c1948

Depth study option

A development study where the measurable improvement is argument about the pace of change. An essay that opens by claiming something about speed or cause of change is already in a different band from one that opens with a discovery.

South Africa: union to the end of apartheid, 1948-94

Depth study option

Source-rich, so the early evidence tends to appear in utility judgements before it appears in essays. A student distinguishing phases of resistance rather than treating it as one movement is the signal to look for.

A world divided: superpower relations, 1943-72

Depth study option

Progress is visible as restraint: answering a question about one crisis with one crisis. If marked essays still import three, the issue is question focus, which is a planning problem and fixable in a handful of sessions.

The origins and course of the First World War, 1905-18

Breadth study in change

Breadth evidence means comparison across years. A marked answer that cites 1905, 1914 and 1917 to argue about change is scoring differently from one that explains 1914 thoroughly, whatever the content quality.

The changing nature of warfare, 1919-1991

Breadth study in change

Look for secure examples from at least three distinct conflicts and for an argument about continuity as well as change. The continuity half is the one most candidates never produce, and its appearance is a reliable progress marker.

The Middle East: conflict, crisis and change, 1917-2012

Breadth study in change

Commonly entered in UAE schools and the option where students arrive with the most prior opinion. Progress shows as attributed specifics replacing general assertion, which a parent can check by looking for names and dates in the paragraphs.

Source investigation skills

Paper 2, Section A

The most measurable part of the course. Three things either appear in an answer or do not: the enquiry named, the provenance used, and a judgement about usefulness. A tick against each, session by session, is a progress record on its own.

Extended writing and timing

Both papers

Measured by band on a marked essay and by the per-question timing log from a full paper. These two numbers, tracked monthly, carry more information about an IGCSE history grade than any report comment.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy 4HI1 support, compared on what each one leaves behind rather than on what it costs. IB Gram delivers the second; the first is a market we do not operate in.

An in-home visit from an independent tutor

A tutor travels to your community and works with your child for a fixed hour. The evidence this produces depends entirely on the individual: some leave annotated work, many leave a verbal summary at the door. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE.

  • Visible presence, which some households value highly
  • Evidence varies by tutor and is rarely contractual
  • Paid minutes lost to gate access, parking and traffic
  • Replacing the tutor means restarting inside the same radius

One-to-one online, which is what we deliver

A fixed weekly slot over live video with screen sharing, so the marked essay, the descriptors and the source booklet are visible to both people. The written output is the point: an annotated answer with a band after every session, and a timing log whenever a paper is sat.

  • Annotated work and a band after each session, by default
  • Tutor matched to the entered options, not to your postcode
  • Starts on the agreed minute; the full hour is teaching
  • A different tutor can be proposed without a new search

Group or centre-based classes

Cheapest per hour and reasonable for content coverage, but the evidence a parent receives is usually a class position rather than a marked band. For a subject where the examined skill is extended individual writing, that is the wrong measurement.

  • Lowest hourly cost of the three options
  • Marking capacity per student is the binding constraint
  • Progress reported relative to the group, not to the descriptors
  • Centres with Dubai premises are licensed separately by KHDA

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a tutor leaves behind, and why that is the thing to compare

Parents choosing between an in-home tutor and an online one usually compare the wrong attribute. Presence is easy to verify and tells you almost nothing. Output is harder to insist on and tells you everything. So the first question to put to any provider in Dubai, before rates or availability, is what document exists at the end of each hour, and whether you will be sent it without asking.

For history the answer can be concrete, because the subject produces writing. A session that worked ends with an extended answer or source answer that has been marked, with the band identified, with annotations showing where the band was lost, and with one named change for next time. That artefact is comparable across weeks, survives a change of tutor, and can be read by a parent who last studied history at school. A verbal summary at the front door has none of those properties.

There is one honest point in favour of the visit. A younger or more easily distracted student sometimes works better with an adult physically present, and some households want the reassurance of seeing the lesson happen. Those are real reasons, and neither is about history. If they decide it for your family, choose the visit with your eyes open and then insist on the written output anyway, because the tutor who cannot produce a band against the descriptors is the problem whichever room they are sitting in.

02

The four measurements that show a 4HI1 grade actually moving

Four numbers are enough. The first is the band of a marked extended answer, judged against the published descriptors rather than against a percentage. Bands move in steps, and a step is unambiguous: it means the answer did something it previously did not, usually reach a judgement or sustain an argument. The second is the per-question timing log from a full paper, which exposes the most common hidden failure in this subject, namely a final answer half the length of the first.

The third is retrieval, measured by blank-paper reproduction. Ask the student to reproduce a one-page timeline for an entered option from memory in twelve minutes, then count the gaps against the original. This is the only one of the four a parent can administer personally without knowing the period, and it is the quickest way to tell whether a student's knowledge is retrievable or merely familiar. The fourth is the position of each weakness on the ranked list drawn up in the first session, revisited at half term.

What makes these four work together is that they fail differently. A band can rise because the student wrote about a topic they happen to know well. A timing log can improve because the paper was easier. Retrieval can be strong while the writing stays narrative. The ranked list can move because a weakness was avoided rather than fixed. Taken individually, each is gameable. Taken together over two months, they are difficult to fake, and the pattern across them tells you whether to continue, change the plan or stop.

FOUR MEASUREMENTS, AND WHAT GOOD MOVEMENT LOOKS LIKE IN EACH
MeasurementWhere it comes fromGood movement over eight weeksWhat it cannot tell you

03

Reading a marked 4HI1 script when you never studied history

  • Read the first sentence of each paragraph: claim or date?
  • Read the last paragraph: does it decide, or does it summarise?
  • In a source answer, is the enquiry named in the first sentence?
  • Is provenance used to judge, or only described?
  • Are people, laws and bodies named, or referred to generally?

You do not need the period knowledge to audit the writing, because the descriptors reward structural moves that are visible to anyone. Read the first sentence of each paragraph. If those sentences are claims, the essay is arguing. If they are dates or events, the essay is narrating, and narration caps the band however accurate the content. That single check takes thirty seconds and identifies the most common reason a Dubai history script sits in the middle.

Then read the final paragraph and ask whether it decides anything. A judgement is a sentence that states which factor mattered most, or how far a statement holds, in terms the question used. A summary of both sides is not a judgement, and its absence is the second most common capped mark. If the last paragraph restates the introduction, the answer has stopped short of the band the student was capable of.

For a source answer, look for three things in order: is the enquiry named in the opening sentence, is the provenance used rather than merely stated, and does the answer say what the source is useful for and what it cannot show. Each of those either appears or does not. Ticking three boxes per source answer, week by week, produces a progress record that requires no subject knowledge at all, and it is more informative than most school report comments.

None of this makes you the marker, and it is not meant to. It makes you able to ask one precise question at the review: the first sentences are still dates rather than claims, so what is the plan for that. A tutor who can answer that question concretely is doing the work. A tutor who answers that your child is making good progress and enjoys the sessions has told you what the term will produce.

04

What the first eight weeks should actually produce

Eight weeks is the right review horizon for a history grade, and the artefacts should arrive on a predictable schedule rather than in a rush before the review. The purpose of fixing this in advance is that it removes the awkward conversation in week seven: either the documents exist or they do not, and the decision to continue is made on the file rather than on goodwill.

The sequence below is what we commit to, and it is deliberately front-loaded. The diagnosis arrives in week one because everything else is calibrated against it. The three artefacts per option come next, written by the student rather than supplied, because a timeline a tutor hands over proves nothing about retrieval. Marked essays begin from week four, when there is a plan to mark against, and the first timed paper sits at week seven so that the eight-week review has a timing log in it.

If a provider cannot describe their equivalent of this schedule before you pay, that is informative. The common pattern in this market is a strong first session followed by a drift into content coverage with no written output, which feels productive and leaves nothing to judge. Insisting on the schedule up front costs a parent one email and converts the eight-week review from an impression into a reading of documents.

Two things will disrupt the schedule legitimately, and both should be planned for in week one rather than treated as failures in week five. School assessment weeks absorb the student's writing capacity, so the session in such a week is better spent reading the school's own marked script than adding to it. And Ramadan shifts the evening, so the slot moves to a post-Iftar time by agreement. Neither changes the artefact list; both change which week each artefact lands in.

THE FIRST EIGHT WEEKS OF 4HI1 SUPPORT - ARTEFACT BY WEEK

05

Signals that look like progress and are not

  • Enjoyment is worth having and is not evidence of movement
  • Recognition is not retrieval; test by reproduction on blank paper
  • A better mock score on a familiar paper proves familiarity
  • No tutor can predict an IGCSE grade, and none should offer to
  • Ask any quoted statistic for its sample size, date and method

Confidence is the first false signal. A student who has spent six hours with an engaging tutor talking about the Middle East will feel better about the Middle East, and feeling better is not a band. We have seen scripts unchanged in structure after a term of enjoyable sessions, which is a teaching failure rather than a student one, and it is invisible unless somebody is marking.

The second is familiarity dressed as mastery. Rereading notes produces recognition, and recognition collapses under exam pressure. This is why the retrieval check matters: a student who insists they know the period and cannot reproduce fifteen anchor dates on blank paper is telling you something true about their revision method. The third is mock inflation, where a score rises because the paper was the one the class had already worked through, or because the marking was generous relative to the descriptors.

The fourth is the predicted grade, and it deserves a blunt sentence. A tutor cannot predict a 4HI1 grade and should not offer one. What a tutor can say is which band an answer currently reaches and what would move it. Any provider showing you a satisfaction percentage, a success rate or a proportion of students achieving a grade owes you the sample size, the date and the method on the same page, and in this market that information is almost never supplied.

The fifth is volume. A folder thick with completed past papers looks like diligence and frequently records nothing, because self-marking rewards content and the descriptors reward structure. Four papers marked properly against the descriptors, with one answer rewritten afterwards, carry more information and more improvement than a dozen sat casually. Ask how many of the papers in the folder were marked by somebody other than the student.

06

Why evidence, not proximity, should pick your 4HI1 tutor

4HI1 schools choose which depth and breadth studies they teach, so the single most useful attribute in a history tutor is having taught your child's entered options. The second is being able to mark extended writing against the descriptors in a way you can read. Neither of those attributes correlates with living near your community, and the in-home filter removes most of the people who have both.

Work through the arithmetic. Start with history tutors available in Dubai, narrow to those with Edexcel rather than Cambridge experience, narrow again to those who have taught the entered periods, then to those free at seven on a Tuesday. Finally narrow to those willing to drive to your community in exam-term traffic. The last filter has no educational content, and it is usually the one that eliminates the specialist, leaving a capable generalist whom families later describe as fine.

Online delivery also makes a wrong match survivable, which is an evidence argument rather than a convenience one. A mismatch discovered in week three costs three weeks if another tutor can take the same hour, and costs a term if the replacement has to live nearby. Because the diagnosis and the marked file transfer with the student, a new tutor starts from the ranked weakness list rather than from scratch. That continuity is impossible to replicate when the binding constraint is who will make the drive.

There is a version of the in-home argument we accept, and it is worth naming rather than arguing past. A student who will not sit down without an adult in the room is a real phenomenon, and for that student presence is doing something teaching cannot. Even then, insist on the marked answer and the band, because the attendance problem and the writing problem are separate and only one of them is solved by a tutor arriving at the door.

07

Who is teaching your child, and how to verify it

  • Ask the tutor directly about their MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • Ask which entered options they have taught and in which series
  • Ask for one marked answer with its band before you commit a term
  • Avoid any arrangement involving your child's own class teacher
  • Disregard quoted fine amounts; no schedule is published

Evidence about the work is one half; evidence about the person is the other. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service via its smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount you see quoted on a tutoring site as unsourced. Separately, a tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, renewed annually. IB Gram claims no regulator approval of any kind and you should be sceptical of any provider that does.

One boundary is worth stating because families sometimes see it as a shortcut. Do not arrange for your child's own school history teacher to tutor them privately. The permit carries a code of conduct addressing tutors serving students affiliated with their own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. Beyond the rules, the person marking the school assessment should not also be paid to prepare the student for it, because it destroys the independence of exactly the evidence this page is about.

08

When the evidence says continue, change or stop

Continue when the band has stepped on two different questions, the timing log shows the final answer holding up, and the week-one weakness has dropped out of the top three. That is tuition working, and the sensible next move is to keep the rhythm and let the plan run to the next review rather than adding hours.

Change the plan when the measurements disagree with each other. Strong retrieval with narrative essays means the work should shift to structure and planning. Good structure with weak retrieval means the artefacts are not being rehearsed and the between-session task needs rewriting. Rising essay bands with flat source answers means the source checks are not being drilled separately, which is a specific fix rather than a general effort problem.

Stop when nothing has moved in eight weeks despite the documents existing. That is a genuine outcome and we will say it rather than sell another term. Sometimes the right answer is a different tutor, sometimes a different subject deserves the slot more, and occasionally the honest answer is that the student needs a term of ordinary school work and sleep rather than more tuition. A provider who cannot describe the conditions under which they would recommend stopping has told you how they intend to handle your eight-week review.

Timing matters in the decision as much as the evidence does. A flat eight weeks in Year 10 is cheap information and leaves plenty of time to act on it. The same eight weeks ending in March of Year 11 is expensive, which is the practical case for starting the measurement early rather than waiting for a mock to raise the alarm. Families who run the first review in the autumn term almost always have more options than those who begin after the mocks.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities where we support 4HI1 students

Delivery is online, so the community changes the practical timetable rather than the choice of tutor. These notes are about what each area does to a weekly session and to the evidence rhythm.

The Lakes and Emirates Hills

Large villas, long internal roads and gated access, where a visiting tutor loses several paid minutes at the gate. Families here most often ask for marked evidence because parental working hours make attending a session impossible.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Dense, young and well supplied with schools nearby, so in-home tutors are findable and slot competition is high from January. The useful question here is not availability but what each tutor leaves behind in writing.

Arjan and Dubai Science Park

Newer apartment communities with growing secondary cohorts. Students are often one of few in their year sitting a particular option pair, which makes tutor-generated marked work the only comparable evidence available.

Al Barsha South

Central and well connected, with several British secondaries within a short radius. Sessions run early evening, and the practical risk is a slot that drifts later week by week until the written task stops being completed.

Jumeirah Islands

Low density with a single approach road, so evening visits from across the city are long. An online slot starting at the agreed minute keeps the weekly rhythm that a monthly evidence comparison depends on.

Al Qusais and Al Twar

Established schools and large cohorts, with heavy directional traffic at peak hours. Families here often started with an in-home arrangement and moved online when the arrival time became unpredictable in exam term.

Dubai Production City

Outer community where the drive from central Dubai frequently exceeds the lesson. Tutors who do travel here tend to cluster students on one evening, which narrows your choice of slot and your choice of specialist.

Serena and Mira

Family villa communities in Dubailand with long school bus runs in both directions. A four o'clock session is unrealistic in term time, so weekday evenings and Saturday mornings carry the schedule.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

The Lakes, Emirates Hills and Al Barsha South

A concentration of large secondary schools with established humanities departments, where option choices are stable and school assessment calendars are predictable. Students we support in this cluster usually come for marked extended writing rather than for content teaching.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • American School of Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Uptown International School
  • GEMS Dubai American Academy

Jumeirah Village, Arjan and Dubai Production City

Newer schools with smaller humanities cohorts, where a student may be one of a handful sitting a given option combination and where school-generated comparison data is thin. Tutor-marked work carries most of the evidence load for these families.

  • Arcadia Global School
  • Nibras International School
  • Dove Green Private School
  • JSS International School
  • Safa Community School
  • GEMS Metropole School Motor City

Schools are listed only to describe the Dubai market; IB Gram claims no affiliation with, endorsement from or partnership with any school named.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked essay and one source answer

Two documents, both marked by the school if possible. They separate a narrative-structure problem from a source-technique problem, and those two have different remedies, different costs and different timescales. The school's latest report comment helps but is the weaker signal.

  2. 02

Get the entered options in writing

Email the humanities lead for the depth studies, the breadth study and the exam series. Without that list no mark means anything, because a strong score on a period your child will not sit is the most misleading document in the folder.

  3. 03

Take a first session and keep the diagnosis

One session per student at no charge, ending in a ranked weakness list and one annotated answer with its band. That document is the baseline for every later comparison, so file it rather than reading it once.

  4. 04

Agree the artefact schedule before paying

Which document arrives in which week across the first eight weeks. Ask any provider for their version in writing. The answer, or the absence of one, tells you how the eight-week review is going to go.

  5. 05

Review on the four measurements at week eight

Band, timing log, retrieval count, weakness rank. Continue, change the plan or stop, decided on the file rather than on how the sessions felt. We will recommend stopping when the evidence says so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A document after every session, by default

An annotated answer, a mark, a band and the one change that would move it. Not on request, not at half term, and not as a verbal summary. That artefact is what makes a parent's supervision possible without subject knowledge.

Measurements that fail differently

Band, timing, retrieval and weakness rank are each gameable alone and hard to fake together. Reporting all four is a deliberate constraint on us as much as a service to you, because it leaves nowhere for a flat eight weeks to hide.

Matched to the entered options

Because 4HI1 schools choose their periods, a general history tutor can be good and still not have taught what your child sits. Tutors state plainly which options they have taught, and we will not describe a generalist as an option specialist.

Honest about delivery

Lessons are one to one and online over live video, in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; that service exists only in India. Several providers in this market leave that question unanswered until a parent has paid.

Continuity when a tutor changes

The diagnosis and the marked file belong to the student, so a replacement tutor starts from the ranked weakness list rather than from scratch. With an in-home arrangement, a change of tutor usually means a change of method as well.

We will tell you to stop

If eight weeks of documents show no movement, the recommendation is to change the tutor, change the subject or stop, and we would rather say it than sell another term. No predicted grades, no satisfaction statistics, no guarantees.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Can we hire a home tutor in Dubai for Edexcel IGCSE History 4HI1?+

In-home history tuition is advertised widely in Dubai by independent tutors and by agencies that place them, so the market exists. IB Gram is not part of it: we do not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, and home visits are a service we run only in India. What we provide to Dubai families is one-to-one online tuition over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For 4HI1 that trade is favourable, because the tutor can be chosen for having taught your child's entered options rather than for driving distance.

How do I know the tutoring is working before the next school report arrives?+

By tracking four things monthly: the band of a marked extended answer against the published descriptors, the per-question timing log from a full paper, the number of gaps when your child reproduces an option timeline from blank paper, and the position of the week-one weakness on the ranked list. The first and second come from the tutor, the third you can run yourself in twelve minutes, and the fourth is a comparison against the first session. None requires you to know any history. Together, over eight weeks, they are difficult to fake.

What document should arrive after each paid history session?+

An extended answer or source answer that has been marked, with the band identified, annotations showing where the band was lost, and one named change for next time. Not a verbal summary at the door, and not a message saying the session went well. In a written subject the artefact costs the tutor nothing extra, because marking is the teaching. If a provider treats written output as an optional extra, that tells you what the eight-week review will look like.

My daughter says the sessions are going brilliantly. Is that evidence?+

It is worth having and it is not evidence of movement. A student who spends six hours with an engaging tutor on an interesting period will feel better about that period, and feeling better is not a band. We have seen scripts unchanged in structure after a term of thoroughly enjoyable sessions, which is a teaching failure rather than a student one. Enjoyment keeps a teenager turning up, which matters. Judge the tuition on the marked work, and keep the enjoyment as the reason the marked work keeps arriving.

Should I trust a predicted grade from a private tutor?+

No. A tutor cannot predict an IGCSE history grade and should not offer one, because the grade depends on the paper sat, the cohort and the boundaries set afterwards. What a tutor can legitimately state is which band an answer currently reaches against the published descriptors and what would move it. If a provider shows you a success rate, a satisfaction percentage or a proportion of students achieving a particular grade, ask for the sample size, the date and the method. In this market that information is almost never available.

How long before a 4HI1 grade actually moves?+

Structural work shows in marked bands within four to six weeks, because fixing narrative paragraphs and a missing judgement changes every extended answer at once. Retrieval takes longer, perhaps eight to twelve weeks, because it depends on the student rehearsing artefacts rather than on the tutor teaching. Content gaps take a term. This is why the diagnosis matters: it tells you which of the three you are buying, and therefore when to review. Eight weeks is the right first horizon, with one review at week four to check the documents are arriving.

What does a band on a marked essay tell me if I never studied history?+

More than a percentage does. Bands are defined by what an answer does rather than by how much it contains, so a band step means the writing performed a move it previously did not, usually sustaining an argument or reaching a judgement. You can audit it yourself: read the first sentence of every paragraph and check whether each is a claim or a date, then read the final paragraph and check whether it decides anything. Those two checks take under a minute and identify the commonest reason a Dubai script sits mid-paper.

Is a better mock score real progress or just a familiar paper?+

Ask which paper it was. A score that rises on a paper the class has already worked through measures familiarity, and self-marked practice inflates for the same reason: students mark content and descriptors mark structure. Real movement shows up on an unseen paper, marked by someone against the published descriptors, with a timing log attached. If a mock improvement cannot be reproduced on a fresh question from the same option, treat it as encouraging rather than conclusive and keep the review date where it was.

Do tutors come to houses in Dubai for IGCSE history lessons?+

Independent tutors and agencies do offer that in Dubai, and the rates reflect the travel. IB Gram does not: there are no home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, and that service exists only in India. Our sessions are one to one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time. The practical gain is that the screen share puts the marked essay, the descriptors and the source booklet in front of both people at once, which is awkward with one paper copy between two heads at a dining table.

How many sessions before we should expect something in writing?+

One. The first session should end with a ranked weakness list and one annotated answer carrying its band, and that document is the baseline every later comparison is made against. Weeks two and three should produce essay plans and the student's first timeline page. Marked essays start from week four, when there is a plan to mark against, and the first timed paper sits at week seven so the eight-week review has a timing log in it. Ask any provider for their version of that schedule before paying.

Can we see the mark scheme the tutor is marking against?+

You should see how the descriptors are being applied, and a tutor should be able to walk you through why an answer sits in one band rather than the next. What no provider should do is reproduce or supply board documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads, because those are the board's copyright and the correct practice is to reference and link the official source. Ask the tutor to show the reasoning on your child's own script; that is more useful than a document and it is the thing you are paying for.

What if the evidence shows no movement after eight weeks?+

Then the plan changes or the tuition stops, and we will say which we think it is. The diagnostic question is whether the measurements disagree. Strong retrieval with narrative essays means the work should shift to structure. Good structure with weak retrieval means the between-session task is not being done and needs rewriting. Flat on everything, with the documents existing, usually means a different tutor or a different subject deserves the slot. A provider who cannot describe when they would recommend stopping has answered a different question.

Who will actually be teaching my child, and can we meet them first?+

You meet the tutor in the first session, which is one per student at no charge, and the person who teaches that session is the person who continues. Ask them which specification and which entered options they have taught, in which series, and whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is granted free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. If the match is wrong, say so and we propose someone else, and the diagnosis from the first session transfers to them.

Can we pause the sessions during mock weeks?+

Yes, and often you should. Mock weeks and school assessment weeks are not revision weeks, and a schedule that treats them as though they were is the commonest reason a plan slips by a fortnight. The useful pattern is to pause teaching during the week itself and bring the mock script to the next session, where it becomes the most valuable single piece of evidence available: a full paper, marked by someone else, under timed conditions. Ramadan is handled the same way, with sessions moved to post-Iftar slots by prior agreement.

Ask for the document, then decide

If you came looking for an in-home 4HI1 history tutor in Dubai, the more useful question is what each hour leaves behind. Ask any provider which document arrives after each session, which four measurements they report, and under what conditions they would tell you to stop. IB Gram does not send tutors to Dubai addresses; we teach 4HI1 one to one online in Gulf Standard Time, and every session ends with an annotated answer and a band. Send one marked essay and one source answer, get the entered options from the humanities lead, and take a first session at no charge, one per student. The written diagnosis is yours either way.
