IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The Diploma is a timetable problem before it is a subject problem

Most families arrive at Diploma tutoring thinking they have a chemistry problem or a maths problem. Often they have a loading problem. A Diploma candidate carries six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge course with two assessed pieces, a CAS programme, and in Dubai the mandatory subjects every private school must teach whatever curriculum it is licensed for. The grade that slipped is frequently the symptom of a week that does not fit, and the useful tutor is the one who notices that before selling thirty hours of chemistry.

That makes a Diploma tutor's first job diagnostic in a broader sense than usual. Which of the six subjects is actually at risk, as opposed to merely uncomfortable? Is the Extended Essay running quietly behind and about to consume a term? Are three Higher Levels producing more written work per week than this particular student can produce at all? Those questions have different answers for different students, and the answers determine whether tutoring, a timetable conversation with the school, or simply a better plan for the holidays is the right next move.

Dubai adds its own structure to this. The emirate's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 schools offering 17 curricula in 2024-25, with UK curricula at well over a third of enrolment and the International Baccalaureate a much smaller share. Diploma provision therefore sits in a minority of schools, specialist teachers are correspondingly thinner on the ground, and a DP candidate's peer group for comparison is small. For 2026-27 the emirate adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, so that balance is shifting rather than fixed.

The other Dubai-specific feature is the mandatory subject requirement. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. For a Diploma candidate that is additional timetabled time that does not appear in any IB document, and it is one of the reasons a Dubai DP week feels fuller than the programme structure suggests.

IB Gram matches Diploma students to subject specialists for one-to-one lessons delivered over live video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time around a Dubai school week. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. The practical gain for a Diploma family is that the tutor is chosen for the group, level and component the evidence points at, rather than for living within driving distance of your community, and every session leaves a written note you can read in half a minute.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Diploma is one of four IB programmes, and a Dubai family may meet two or three of them in the same school. Knowing where your child sits in the sequence explains what the next transition will demand.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects chosen across six groups, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, assessed through externally marked papers plus internally assessed components the school marks and the IB moderates. The core adds the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Award conditions, including how the core contributes, are set by the IB and confirmed by your school's coordinator.

In Dubai the Diploma competes with a well-established A Level route, so many candidates arrive having considered both and some switch after DP1 term one. A tutor working here should know what the student would have been doing on the other route, because the comparison shapes how the family reads every result for the next two years.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria per subject, each out of eight, judged against descriptors rather than percentages. Students arriving in the Diploma from MYP have met criterion marking and inquiry-led work, which helps with internal assessment and leaves them underprepared for the volume of timed written papers.

Dubai schools running MYP often offer a choice at 16 between the Diploma and a British sixth form, so the final MYP year points at two destinations. Where a student is heading for the Diploma, the most useful preparation is timed extended writing, which MYP assessment does not demand in the same quantity.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-K to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry units ending in the Year 6 Exhibition, with no external assessment. Relevant to Diploma families mainly as context: a student who came through PYP and MYP in the same school has a decade of criterion-based feedback behind them and reads a rubric fluently.

Dubai's primary cohorts turn over quickly with arrivals from British, Indian and American systems, so a single Year 6 class may contain children with four different assessment vocabularies. That is also why Arabic as an additional language is the most requested primary subject in the emirate.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

At least two DP courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project, personal and professional skills, service learning and language development. The DP courses inside it are examined exactly as they are for Diploma candidates, so tutoring requests for CP students are usually about those specific subject papers.

Only a small number of UAE schools offer the Career-related Programme, so UAE-based tutor coverage is thin and most matches come from our wider pool. The online format and the subject depth are unchanged; the tutor's location is what differs.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma subjects sit in six groups and a candidate takes one from each, with a permitted substitution. Below are the subjects Dubai families most often ask about, grouped as the programme groups them.

Studies in Language and Literature: English A

HL and SL

Group 1. Language and Literature or Literature, assessed through unseen textual analysis, a comparative paper, an individual oral and, at Higher Level, an additional essay on a studied work. The scarce skill is analysis rather than content knowledge, which catches out students arriving from content-heavy systems.

Language Acquisition: Arabic B and ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Group 2. Arabic is the most commonly taken acquisition language in Dubai, partly because the emirate requires Arabic teaching in all private schools. Streams differ sharply, so a tutor must know whether your child sits ab initio, B at Standard or B at Higher before planning anything.

Individuals and Societies: Economics

HL and SL

Group 3. Diagram accuracy and real-world application decide the grade, with Higher Level adding a quantitative paper that exposes students who revised theory only. The internal assessment commentaries are marked against published criteria and are where early feedback pays most.

Individuals and Societies: History

HL and SL

Group 3. Source analysis plus essay writing on prescribed topics, with a historical investigation as internal assessment. Match a tutor to the specific prescribed subject your school teaches, because strength in one region of study does not transfer to another.

Individuals and Societies: Business Management

HL and SL

Group 3. Case-study application separates the grades: a correctly drawn framework that never refers to the stimulus forfeits the application and evaluation marks. Popular in Dubai, with reasonable supply at Standard Level and thinner coverage at Higher.

Sciences: Chemistry

HL and SL

Group 4. Structure and reactivity content with a single scientific investigation as internal assessment. The tightest Higher Level market in Dubai between February and May, which makes it the subject where booking early changes what is available to you.

Sciences: Physics

HL and SL

Group 4. Method and reasoning marks reward stated steps, so answers given without working score below their potential. Uncertainty treatment in the investigation is the component Dubai students most often underprepare for.

Sciences: Biology

HL and SL

Group 4. Extended responses are marked against lists of creditable points, so making five accurate plain statements beats writing elegantly about one. Command-term discipline is the dominant diagnosable error across Dubai cohorts.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Group 5. The route most often expected for mathematics-heavy degrees, with Higher Level adding a third paper that rewards structured investigation of an unfamiliar problem. Check your target universities' stated requirements rather than assuming.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Group 5. Statistics, modelling and technology use, with marks available for interpretation in context as well as calculation. Growing in Dubai faster than the number of teachers who have genuinely taught both maths courses.

The Arts and group substitutions

HL and SL

Group 6, which a candidate may replace with a second subject from groups 1 to 5. Dubai students aiming at science or engineering frequently take that substitution, which produces the two-science or two-maths patterns that make a week heavy.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Assessed against published criteria with stated limits, including 4,000 words for the Extended Essay. The school supervises both. A tutor may question, critique method and give criterion-based feedback on what the student has already written, and nothing beyond that.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Diploma support takes different shapes at different points in the two years. All formats below are one-to-one over live video.

Single-subject weekly sessions

One subject, one tutor, a fixed weekly slot following the school's scheme of work and the current subject guide. The standard arrangement for a Higher Level subject that needs sustained work across a term rather than a short fix.

  • Same tutor and slot each week
  • Follows the school's sequence and assessment calendar
  • Short written note after each session
  • Reviewed at session four against the stated target

Programme planning session

A single session, with the parent present, that looks at the whole Diploma rather than one subject: the six-subject load, where the core stands, which component is actually at risk and what the school rather than a tutor should be asked to change.

  • Whole timetable reviewed, not one grade
  • Identifies which subject is at risk and which is merely hard
  • Names what belongs with the school's coordinator
  • Often ends in a smaller tutoring plan than expected

Core component block

A capped block for Extended Essay process support, Theory of Knowledge or an internal assessment plan. Feedback, questioning and method critique on material the student has already produced, with the cap agreed before the first session.

  • Hour cap agreed in advance
  • Built around the school's own deadline
  • The student writes every submitted word
  • Written summary at the end of the block

Transition support into DP1

A short block for students moving from IGCSE or MYP into the Diploma, aimed at the specific gap their prior course leaves. Usually timed written work, extended-response structure and the independent study habits the core demands.

  • Subject-by-subject gap mapped before teaching starts
  • Targets timed extended writing, which both routes underprepare
  • Includes Extended Essay scoping while there is still time
  • Short by design: six to ten hours in most cases

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What the IB Diploma asks a Dubai student to carry

The Diploma's shape is six subjects taken across six groups, with one subject from each group and a permitted substitution of a sixth-group subject for a second from groups one to five. Normally three are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Alongside those sit three core elements: the Extended Essay, an independent research piece with a 4,000-word upper limit; Theory of Knowledge, which produces an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title; and CAS, a programme of creativity, activity and service that is not graded but is a requirement for the award.

Assessment is split. Most of each subject grade comes from externally marked papers sat at the end of the course. A further portion, commonly around a fifth, comes from an internally assessed component which the school marks against published criteria and the IB then moderates. Award conditions, including how the core contributes and what constitutes a pass, are set by the IB; your school's coordinator is the right person to confirm the current rules for your child's cohort rather than any tutoring page.

The honest description of why this is hard is not that any one subject is harder than its A Level equivalent. It is that six subjects, two of which the student may not have chosen enthusiastically, run simultaneously with three pieces of independent extended work, over two years, with the heaviest coursework deadlines landing in the same months. Students who struggle in the Diploma are usually competent in every individual element and overwhelmed by the aggregate.

That is why the first useful conversation is about load rather than content. Count the written work due per week across six subjects. Find out where the Extended Essay actually stands rather than where it is supposed to stand. Ask whether the Higher Level combination produces three sets of long written assignments in the same fortnight. A tutor who starts there will often recommend fewer paid hours than one who starts with the chemistry grade.

02

The core, and what a tutor may legitimately do with it

The core is where Diploma plans most often come apart, and it is also where the boundary around tutoring is tightest. All three elements belong to the student and the school. The Extended Essay has a school supervisor who holds formal responsibility and runs the reflective sessions. Theory of Knowledge is taught as a course with an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. CAS is a programme of experiences with its own reflective requirements, overseen by a coordinator.

What a tutor may do is teach skills, ask questions about material the student has already produced, and give feedback against the published criteria. What a tutor may not do is supply content, restructure a draft or provide text. Everything submitted must be the student's own, and the consequences of that boundary being crossed fall on the candidate. In this market at least one site openly sells completed internal assessments; buying one puts an entire Diploma at risk for a handful of marks.

Given that boundary, the highest-value intervention is early and cheap. A few hours spent testing whether an Extended Essay research question can actually be answered within 4,000 words, with sources the student can reach, prevents the crisis that otherwise arrives in the final year. The same is true of Theory of Knowledge: the prescribed title chosen effectively sets the ceiling, and a poor choice cannot be recovered by polishing later.

The practical failure pattern in Dubai is seasonal. Extended Essay progress stalls over the long summer break between the two Diploma years, when families travel and nobody is chasing a deadline. Students who return in the second year with no usable draft lose the weeks they needed for subject revision. Putting a small amount of structured support into the term before that break is worth more than a large amount of support after it.

03

Two years, counted from the end rather than the beginning

Diploma plans fail when they are built forwards from September rather than backwards from the final papers. Counted backwards, the structure is clear: final papers are preceded by a mock window, which is preceded by the last internal assessment deadlines, which are preceded by the Extended Essay submission, which is preceded by the long summer break where everything stalls. Each of those is a hard date set by a school or a board, and each one has work that must be finished before it.

Specific dates differ by school and by board, and some of them cannot be published responsibly. Cambridge and Pearson publish their series and key dates openly: Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, and the Checkpoint tests that sit outside those windows are Primary and Lower Secondary assessments rather than IGCSE papers, so they are no guide to when a Year 11 candidate sits anything. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and in November, and the November 2026 timetable is the cleanest published illustration of the shape: papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students the following January, as the November 2025 results did on 22 January 2026. Entries for either board close well before the papers, and the school registrar rather than the student is the person who files them. IB session dates, by contrast, are not confirmable from automated sources, so this page does not publish one: confirm every IB date with your school's coordinator or on ibo.org.

The useful discipline is to take your own school's assessment calendar, mark the internal deadlines and mock windows, and then count backwards from each. A plan built that way reveals the two or three fortnights in the whole programme where support actually changes what is submitted. Hours spent in those fortnights are worth several times the same hours spent in a quiet month.

Dubai adds two calendar features worth planning around. The school year runs from late August or early September to late June or early July, with winter and spring breaks. And Ramadan moves earlier each year, shortening school days and reshaping evening availability, which is why many families shift sessions to a post-Iftar slot. A revision plan built on a normal evening pattern can quietly lose its best fortnight.

04

The IGCSE jump, subject by subject

A large share of Dubai's Diploma candidates arrive from an IGCSE background, either by transferring at 16 or by choosing the Diploma inside a school that offers both. The gap is real and it is specific rather than general. Students arrive with strong content recall and weak extended-response structure, because IGCSE rewards accurate short answers and the Diploma rewards sustained argument. They also arrive unused to independent extended work, because nothing in IGCSE resembles a 4,000-word essay with a supervisor.

Subject by subject the gap differs. In mathematics the jump is in abstraction and in the expectation that method is communicated, not just performed. In the sciences it is in quantitative treatment and in the single extended investigation replacing a series of short practicals. In English the jump is from comprehension and directed writing to unseen analysis and comparative argument. In the humanities it is from recall with some explanation to evaluation with weighted evidence.

The useful response is a short mapped block in DP1 term one, not a term of general support. Six to ten hours spent on timed extended writing, on command-term structure and on scoping the Extended Essay will close more of the gap than thirty hours of content coverage, because content is not where the gap is. That is also the cheapest tutoring a Diploma family will ever buy, since DP1 rates and availability are both better than DP2's.

One caution about the transition decision itself. Where a student is genuinely unsuited to three Higher Levels, no amount of tutoring substitutes for a timetable change, and only the school can make one. A tutor's job in that case is to say so clearly and early, while a change is still possible, rather than to sell a plan that manages the symptoms for eighteen months.

Higher Level choices and what universities actually ask for

  • Read the specific course's stated requirements on the university's own admissions pages
  • Analysis and Approaches is usually expected for mathematics-heavy degrees
  • Applications and Interpretation suits data and social-science destinations
  • Count the written load of a Higher Level combination, not its reputation
  • A timetable change is the school's decision, and early is the only time it is easy

The Higher Level decision shapes two years and it is usually made in a fortnight with incomplete information. Two patterns cause most of the later trouble in Dubai: three Higher Levels that each demand long written assignments in the same weeks, and a mathematics route chosen by preference rather than by what the student's intended degrees expect.

On mathematics, the practical rule is to check rather than assume. Analysis and Approaches is the route most often expected for mathematics-heavy degrees including engineering, physics, mathematics itself and many economics courses; Applications and Interpretation suits data-oriented and social-science destinations. Requirements differ by university and by course, they change, and universities in the UAE, the United Kingdom, North America and Europe do not state them identically. The only reliable method is to read the stated entry requirements for the specific courses on the specific universities' own admissions pages, in the year your child applies.

On subject combinations, count the written load rather than the difficulty. Two Higher Level sciences plus a Higher Level humanity produces three internal assessments and three sets of extended written work, often bunched. That is manageable for a well-organised student and brutal for a disorganised one, and the difference is a timetable judgement rather than an ability judgement. The school's coordinator can usually show which combinations their own cohorts find heavy.

Nothing on this page implies that tutoring is required for university admission or for equivalency. It is not, and any claim that it is would be a false-urgency claim about a regulatory and admissions process. What tutoring can legitimately do is help a student meet a requirement they have chosen, and help a family read that requirement accurately before two years of work are organised around a guess.

06

Ministry of Education equivalency for Diploma graduates in the UAE

Families planning on a UAE university, or on using a school certificate inside the country, meet the equivalency process. It is run by the Ministry of Education rather than by a school or a tutoring provider, and it has published requirements that differ by curriculum. Describing it accurately matters, because at least one ranking competitor in this market publishes the wrong subject count for the British track.

On the British track the published requirements are specific: students must submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for that count. On the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying.

For the International Baccalaureate specifically, no points threshold is published on this page, and nobody should quote you one from a tutoring site. The source that sets out the British and American tracks states no IB figure, so any IB equivalency number would be unsourced. Check moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority directly, or ask your school's coordinator who deals with these submissions every year.

Two boundaries worth stating. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency or attestation for anyone; we describe the process and point to the authority. And equivalency is a documentation process rather than an academic one, so it is not something tutoring prepares a student for. Where it interacts with tutoring at all, it is in making sure a student's subject choices do not accidentally leave a gap the process will notice two years later.

What evidence of Diploma progress looks like across two years

Across a two-year programme a parent needs indicators that move faster than school reports do. Reports average work produced over months, so a real improvement in October can stay invisible until January, by which point a decision may already have been taken. The alternative is a short list of artefacts that exist or do not exist at a given point.

In DP1 the artefacts are a tested Higher Level load, a scoped Extended Essay research question, and evidence that the student can write a timed extended response in each subject. If those three exist by the end of DP1, the programme is on track regardless of what any individual grade says. If the Extended Essay question is still vague at the end of DP1, that is a more serious signal than a disappointing chemistry mark, and it is the one families most often miss.

In DP2 the artefacts are internal assessment drafts at a stage where feedback can still change them, marked timed papers in each subject, and a short list of near-miss questions from the mock. The progress indicator inside sessions is narrower: can the student now do unaided what they could not do three weeks ago, and do they catch their own errors before the tutor does? Both are visible long before a grade moves.

None of this predicts a result and no honest provider will offer one. External outcomes depend on papers nobody has seen, on boundaries set after marking, and on what the student does on the day. What can be held to a standard is whether these artefacts exist, whether the indicators are moving, and whether the provider shows you the evidence when asked. At session four we review exactly that, and sometimes the right recommendation is fewer hours or none.

Delivery, scheduling and honest coverage for Diploma families

Lessons are one-to-one over live video on a shared screen, scheduled around a Dubai school week in Gulf Standard Time. Most Diploma sessions land between 16:30 and 20:30 after the school run and activities, and sixty to ninety minutes is the usual length, since that is what a Diploma student can sustain at the level of demand these subjects require. A short written note follows each session.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For a Diploma family the relevant consequence is choice of tutor. Diploma provision sits in a minority of Dubai schools, so the specialists for a given Higher Level component are few, and geographic matching would hand you the nearest available science teacher rather than the person who has taught that component to examination.

Coverage is uneven and we publish the position rather than discovering it with you. Common subjects at common levels are matched within a few days. Scarce components, Chemistry at Higher Level between February and May or Computer Science HL at any time, take one to two weeks or longer. Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the match comes from our wider pool of IB subject teachers in other time zones at a Dubai-friendly hour, with no change to format or subject depth.

Two things we will decline. Anything that involves producing assessed work, because everything submitted must be the student's own and the risk of crossing that line falls on the candidate. And a large plan where a timetable conversation with the school is the actual remedy. Saying so costs us bookings and is the reason the programme planning session exists as a separate, smaller thing you can buy instead.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities with established Diploma cohorts

Diploma provision clusters, and that shapes what families in each community are dealing with. These are the areas our Diploma requests most often come from.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Long-established Diploma catchment with two-generation familiarity in some households. Requests here are typically specific: one Higher Level subject, one component, often an internal assessment criterion rather than a whole course.

Al Barsha South

Large newer schools with fast-growing Diploma intakes, so many families are navigating the programme for the first time and the useful conversation is about the whole timetable rather than one grade.

Dubai Internet City

Apartment community with students commuting to schools across the emirate, which pushes sessions late and makes the Extended Essay the component most likely to slip in a busy term.

Dubai Knowledge Park

Close to several senior schools and higher-education providers, so parents here ask early about university expectations and the Maths Analysis against Applications decision.

Tecom

Dense residential stock feeding a mix of curricula. A common pattern is siblings on different routes, one on IGCSE and A Level, one on the Diploma, with parents comparing two incompatible report formats.

The Sustainable City

Self-contained community with a school on site, which means a small Diploma cohort and very few local comparisons. Online matching matters more here because the local specialist pool is tiny.

Dubai Academic City

University-adjacent, with senior school provision nearby and a strong focus on post-Diploma destinations. Equivalency and attestation questions come up here more than anywhere else in the emirate.

Al Furjan

Rapidly grown villa community with students spread across many schools, so internal deadlines in neighbouring households can differ by a month, which breaks the habit of copying a neighbour's tutoring plan.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai IB World Schools running the full Diploma

These schools between them cover most of the emirate's Diploma cohort. Their internal assessment and Extended Essay deadlines differ by several weeks, which is why a plan should be built from your own school's assessment calendar rather than from a general two-year timeline.

Dubai schools where the Diploma sits alongside other routes

Students at these schools often choose between the Diploma and a British sixth form, and a minority switch after the first Diploma term. That decision, rather than any single subject, is the most consequential thing a tutor can help a family think through clearly.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Start with the whole timetable

Tell us the six subjects, the three Higher Levels, where the Extended Essay stands and which component prompted the call. A Diploma request framed at programme level gets diagnosed properly; one framed as a single bad grade often produces a plan aimed at the wrong thing.

  2. 02

Free diagnostic lesson on real material

One full lesson at no cost, built around a marked script, an internal assessment draft or a research question. It ends with a written statement of what is actually at risk across the programme and roughly how many hours that needs.

  3. 03

We name what belongs to the school

Timetable changes, supervisor deadlines, moderation outcomes and equivalency submissions belong with your school's IB coordinator. We say which parts of your problem are theirs, including when that means you need less tutoring than you expected.

  4. 04

Match on group, level and component

Not the subject alone. A Higher Level Paper 3, a scientific investigation criterion and an unseen-text paper need different teachers, and we say which specialist we are proposing and what they have taught.

  5. 05

Build the plan from your school's calendar

Internal deadlines and mock windows differ by several weeks between Dubai IB schools. We ask for your calendar and count backwards from it, so the hours land in the fortnights where they change what is submitted.

  6. 06

Review at session four, then decide

We look at the artefacts: a redone question, a changed draft, a marked paper. If the indicators have not moved we revisit the diagnosis rather than adding hours, and if the match is wrong we change the tutor at no extra cost.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work to the programme, not one subject

A Diploma problem is often a loading problem. We look at the six-subject week, the Higher Level combination and where the core stands before proposing subject hours, which regularly produces a smaller plan than a family arrived expecting.

Matched on component, not proximity

Lessons are delivered online, so the tutor is chosen for the group, level and component the evidence points at. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

A published boundary on core work

The Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and every internal assessment must be the student's own work. We question, critique method and give criterion-based feedback, and we state that in writing before a block starts.

Dates handled honestly

Cambridge and Pearson key dates are quoted from their published pages. IB session dates are not confirmable from automated sources, so we do not publish one and we point you to your coordinator or ibo.org instead.

Equivalency described, never promised

We set out the ministry's published requirements with the source named, state plainly that no IB points figure is published there, and point you to the authority. We neither perform nor guarantee any part of the process.

Coverage limits before you commit

Scarce Higher Level components take one to two weeks to match and longer between February and May. If no UAE-based specialist is free we say so and explain where the match would come from instead.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How many subjects does an IB Diploma student in Dubai take?+

Six, chosen across six groups, with one subject from each group and a permitted substitution of a sixth-group arts subject for a second subject from groups one to five. Normally three are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Alongside those six sit the three core elements: the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. In Dubai there is additional timetabled content that does not appear in IB documentation, because private schools in the emirate must also teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies whatever international curriculum they are licensed for.

How should my child choose which three subjects to take at Higher Level?+

By counting written load as well as interest and requirements. Two Higher Level sciences plus a Higher Level humanity produces three internal assessments and three sets of extended written assignments, frequently bunched into the same weeks. That is manageable for a well-organised student and punishing for a disorganised one, which is a timetable judgement rather than an ability judgement. Check your intended degrees' stated entry requirements on the universities' own admissions pages before choosing, and ask the school's coordinator which combinations their own cohorts find heavy. Changing later is possible but much harder.

How long does the Extended Essay have to be and who supervises it?+

It has an upper limit of 4,000 words, and it is supervised by a member of staff at your child's school who holds formal responsibility for the process, including the recorded reflective sessions. A tutor may critique the scope of a research question, question method, and give feedback against the published criteria on material the student has already written. A tutor may not supply content, restructure a draft or provide text, because everything submitted must be the student's own work. The highest-value hours are spent early, testing whether the question can actually be answered within the limit.

What does Theory of Knowledge require a Diploma student to produce?+

Two assessed pieces: an exhibition, in which the student links objects to a prompt and explains why each one answers it, and an essay written on a prescribed title with a published word limit. Both are judged against criteria on a best-fit basis, which means polish does not move a band but the named qualities in the descriptors do. The choice of prescribed title effectively sets the ceiling, and a weak choice cannot be recovered by later work. That makes title selection the cheapest high-value thing a tutor can help a student think through properly.

Does CAS affect my child's Diploma result?+

CAS is not graded, but it is a requirement for the award, and a student who has not completed it to the school's satisfaction has a problem no subject grade compensates for. It runs across both Diploma years as a programme of creativity, activity and service with its own reflective requirements, overseen by a coordinator at the school. It is also the element a tutor has no business touching: the experiences and the reflections belong to the student. Where CAS is behind, the conversation is with the coordinator, not with a tutoring provider.

Which schools in Dubai run the full IB Diploma?+

Diploma provision sits in a minority of the emirate's private schools, which served 387,441 students across 227 schools offering 17 curricula in 2024-25 with UK curricula the largest share by enrolment. Established Diploma cohorts include schools in Emirates Hills, Al Barsha, Al Garhoud, Dubai Festival City and Al Jaddaf, and the emirate is adding three new International Baccalaureate schools among seven new private schools for 2026-27, creating 16,846 new places overall. For an authoritative current list, check the regulator's own school listing rather than any tutoring directory.

How big is the jump from IGCSE to the IB Diploma?+

Specific rather than general. Students arrive with strong content recall and weak extended-response structure, because IGCSE rewards accurate short answers while the Diploma rewards sustained argument with weighted evidence. They also arrive with nothing in their experience resembling a 4,000-word independent essay. In mathematics the jump is in abstraction and in communicating method; in the sciences it is in quantitative treatment and a single extended investigation; in English it is from comprehension to unseen analysis. Six to ten hours in DP1 term one on timed extended writing closes more of that gap than thirty hours of content coverage.

Will a UAE university accept an IB Diploma?+

Universities set their own entry requirements and the Ministry of Education runs a separate equivalency process for school certificates, so there are two things to check rather than one. For the British track the published equivalency rules are specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at the same grade. For the International Baccalaureate no points threshold appears in that source, so nobody should quote you one. Check moe.gov.ae, the emirate's attestation authority, or your school's coordinator.

Does my child need Maths Analysis or Maths Applications for engineering?+

Analysis and Approaches is the route most often expected for mathematics-heavy degrees including engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics courses, while Applications and Interpretation suits data-oriented and social-science destinations. That is a general pattern rather than a rule, because requirements differ by university and by course, they change between admission cycles, and institutions in the UAE, the UK, North America and Europe do not state them identically. Read the stated requirements for the specific courses on the specific universities' own admissions pages, in the cycle your child will apply in.

Is taking two Higher Level sciences too much for a Dubai student?+

It depends entirely on written output rather than on intelligence. Two Higher Level sciences means two extended investigations plus two sets of long written assignments, and in most schools those land in overlapping weeks. A student who plans ahead and drafts early handles it; a student who works to deadlines does not, and no amount of subject tutoring fixes the scheduling. If the combination is genuinely wrong, only the school can change the timetable, and the window for doing that comfortably is DP1 term one. That is why we offer a programme planning session separately from subject hours.

When should a Diploma student start the Extended Essay?+

Earlier than most do, and specifically before the long summer break between the two Diploma years. The pattern we see in Dubai is that progress stalls over that break while families travel and no deadline is in sight, and students return to the second year with no usable draft, then lose the weeks they needed for subject revision. The target worth setting is a scoped research question by the end of DP1 term two and a usable draft before the break ends. Scoping work takes only a few hours and is the cheapest high-value support in the whole programme.

Can my child change a Higher Level subject after starting the Diploma?+

Sometimes, and it gets harder every week. The decision belongs to the school, which has to consider timetable capacity, how much of the course has been covered and whether the student can realistically catch up. In practice DP1 term one is when a change is straightforward, DP1 term two is when it becomes difficult, and after that it is usually not possible. If the evidence points at a wrong combination rather than a weak student, the right move is a conversation with the coordinator immediately, not a tutoring plan that manages the symptoms for eighteen months.

Do Arabic and Islamic Education count towards the Diploma?+

They are separate requirements rather than part of the Diploma's six subjects, unless your child takes Arabic as their group 2 language acquisition subject. Dubai private schools must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. For equivalency purposes, Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the five-subject GCSE or IGCSE count.

How does a Dubai school report translate into a Diploma grade?+

Loosely, and with a lag that catches families out. School reports average work produced over months, and internal predictions are the school's own judgement rather than a result. Internal assessment marks shown on a report are also provisional, because the school's marking is moderated by the IB against its own standard and a whole cohort can be adjusted. Treat a report as a direction of travel and look instead at artefacts: a timed extended response in each subject, internal assessment drafts at a changeable stage, and a mapped list of where marks were lost in the most recent paper.

How early should we arrange a Diploma tutor in Dubai?+

DP1 is both cheaper and better supplied than DP2, so the practical answer is earlier than most families act. Specialist availability in Dubai tightens from January to April because every Diploma cohort in the emirate converges on the same weeks, and the tutor who was bookable in November may not be in March at any rate. If you are not sure support is needed, run a free diagnostic session rather than committing: it costs nothing, produces a written statement of what is actually at risk, and frequently results in fewer hours than a family expected to buy.

Map the programme, then buy the hours

An IB Diploma tutor in Dubai is worth having when the hours are aimed at the right thing, and that means looking at the whole programme first: the six-subject week, the Higher Level combination, where the Extended Essay actually stands and which component the marked work points at. IB Gram runs a free diagnostic lesson on your child's own material, builds the plan from your school's assessment calendar rather than a generic timeline, and delivers one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Send us the six subjects, the three Higher Levels and the piece of work that prompted the call.
