Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 Home Tutor in Dubai

Families looking for a Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 home tutor in Dubai are weighing two things at once: whether a specialist exists within driving distance, and what the travel will add to the bill. This page answers both with published AED figures and then makes the case for the format we actually deliver, which is one-to-one online over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are an India-only service.

The home-tutor question for 0478, answered with numbers

Hiring a tutor who comes to the house is a normal arrangement in Dubai and there is nothing wrong with it. The market is well developed, the rates are published in places if you look, and for younger children the case is strong. For Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science specifically, two things make the in-home version harder than it looks, and both are worth knowing before you start calling numbers in a community group.

The first is price, and the reason behind it. Published figures for Dubai put in-home one-to-one tuition at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour: Bestimate's 2026 rate table for the city gives AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500. Qualified online one-to-one sits lower, around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. That gap is not a difference in teaching quality. It is a tutor's drive time being paid for, which in this city is a real cost for them and a large one for you.

The second is supply. A tutor who can teach both 0478 papers properly is a narrower population than a tutor who can help with Python. The qualification examines computer systems in one paper and algorithms, programming, databases and Boolean logic in the other, with no coursework component at all, and the second paper is where most families' problems sit. Inside a twenty-minute radius of any one Dubai community, the number of people who have taught that second paper to examination standard and are free at six in the evening is small. Several of the families who contact us have already discovered this.

IB Gram's answer is to drop the radius rather than the standard. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on a fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, matched to the programming language your child's school teaches. We do not send a tutor to a Dubai address at all; visiting a family's home is a service we run only in India, and saying so plainly is better than letting a parent book a trial expecting a doorbell.

For a subject built on code, the shared screen is also the better tool. A tutor can see the student's actual editor, run the program, break it on purpose to show what the error reveals, then convert it into the handwritten pseudocode the exam demands, with every annotated file saved and sent afterwards. By February the student holds a folder of their own worked examples. A visiting tutor leans over the same laptop for an hour and leaves nothing behind.

What follows is the detail a family needs to make this decision on numbers rather than on impressions: the hour itemised into its parts, how fast a local shortlist shrinks once you filter for both papers, what the drive actually costs in a Dubai late afternoon, how group classes and tuition centres compare, the evidence you should expect to see at six weeks, where Computer Science sits in Ministry of Education equivalency, and the seven questions worth putting to any tutor before money changes hands.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programme stages matter for this decision, because the right spend on a Year 10 student and a Year 11 student eight weeks from a paper are different products. Each note is about Dubai specifically.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Upper Secondary: Computer Science 0478

Two written papers of equal weight, one on computer systems and one on algorithms, programming, databases and Boolean logic. No coursework, and nothing assessed at a keyboard. Tutoring value concentrates in exam technique, because most students already have more content than their marks suggest.

Dubai's private sector enrolled 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with seven more schools opening for 2026-27 adding 16,846 places. For computing families the relevant detail is narrower: not every school enters candidates for 0478, some offer ICT 0417 instead, and a few put both in the same option column. Confirm which your child's school actually enters before buying tuition for either.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme: Design and digital units

The IB alternative in the same age band, where computing is taught through design cycles and internally assessed against criteria rather than through external written papers. Students develop genuine project skill and rarely meet pseudocode conventions or handwritten algorithm work.

Dubai has a large IB sector, with International Baccalaureate schools taking 7 per cent of private enrolment in 2024-25 and three new IB schools among those opening for 2026-27. Families moving a child from MYP into Year 10 or 11 of a British-curriculum school should expect the examination discipline to be the gap, not the subject knowledge, and should budget a short diagnostic block rather than a full term.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Computer Science 9618

The continuation, with deeper data structures, logic and system software, plus a programming project at full A Level. It assumes fluency in one text-based language from the start of Year 12 rather than building it.

Because Dubai students choose between A Level and the IB Diploma in the spring of Year 11, the money question arrives early: is tuition in Year 11 buying a grade or buying readiness for Year 12. Where a student intends to continue with computing, the summer between the two years is usually a better spend than extra sessions in May, and we will say so rather than selling the extra sessions.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Where tutoring money goes matters more than which subjects exist, so these notes name how scarce the specialist pool is for each one and what that does to the rate a family is quoted in this market.

Computer Science (0478)

Two written papers

The narrowest specialist pool of any common IGCSE subject in this city. A tutor who covers systems theory, algorithm design, databases and Boolean logic to examination standard is scarce locally and findable nationally, which is the whole argument for online matching.

Information and Communication Technology (0417)

Three papers, two practical

Scarcer still in the in-home market, because a tutor needs to work in the same software environment as the student. Screen sharing solves that problem outright and a visiting tutor does not.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

The deepest tutor pool in Dubai and the easiest to hire locally at a sensible rate. Worth knowing when budgeting: maths hours are cheaper to buy than computing hours, and the two subjects reinforce each other.

Cambridge International Mathematics (0607)

Core and Extended

Offered by schools on an IB pathway. Fewer tutors than for 0580, so booking earlier in the year matters; the graphical calculator element also rewards a tutor who has taught that specific syllabus.

Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

A reasonable local pool and a strong partner subject for computing, since both papers reward describing a mechanism precisely rather than writing everything the student knows.

Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

Mentioned for budget reasons. A student carrying three sciences plus computing is funding four content-heavy subjects, and families almost always have to choose two rather than four.

Business Studies (0450)

Core and Extended

Easy to hire for and often the subject families drop from the tutoring budget first. The decision should rest on which mark is furthest below the student's demonstrated ability, not on which subject is cheapest.

Economics (0455)

Core and Extended

Essay-heavy and sitting in the same exam fortnight as computing at most Dubai schools, which is a scheduling problem as much as an academic one.

First Language English (0500)

Extended entry

Included because written precision shows up in computing marks. Students who write loosely lose systems-paper marks they had already earned through understanding.

AS and A Level Computer Science (9618)

AS and full A Level

The post-16 route. Tutor scarcity is sharper again at this level, and the Year 12 families who struggle to find anyone are usually the ones who left it until October.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support, priced and planned differently. The right one depends on how far into Year 11 you are and whether the problem is content coverage or the ability to produce marks under timing.

Short diagnostic block

Three or four sessions, bought as a block, aimed at finding out what is actually wrong before committing to a term. The student is scored across the syllabus topics, writes one algorithm by hand and completes one trace table, and the block ends with a written view rather than a renewal.

  • Fixed number of sessions, no rolling commitment
  • Ends with a scored topic list the family keeps
  • Often the only purchase a Year 10 family needs
  • Honest conclusion where tutoring is not the answer

Weekly term-time slot

One live hour a week with the same tutor on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, with handwritten work set between sessions and marked before the next. The rhythm matters more than the hour count: marks move on the marking cycle, not on contact time.

  • Same tutor and slot through the term
  • Handwritten algorithm or theory task every week
  • Short parent note every second session
  • Review at six weeks against the first diagnostic

Paired sibling scheduling

Two children in the same household taking consecutive slots rather than a shared lesson. Each gets undivided one-to-one time, and the family runs one uninterrupted block in the evening instead of two separate arrangements.

  • Back-to-back slots, not a shared session
  • Different subjects and year groups are fine
  • One evening disrupted instead of two
  • Each child reviewed on their own evidence

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What you are actually paying for in an in-home hour

The hourly rate for a visiting tutor is not one thing. It bundles the teaching hour, the drive in both directions, the fuel and tolls, the risk that a cancelled lesson leaves a hole in the tutor's evening that cannot be filled, and the preparation for a named syllabus. Online delivery removes several of those components outright. That is the whole of the price difference, and it is worth seeing itemised rather than argued about.

The published Dubai figures make the pattern visible. Bestimate's 2026 rate table for the city puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour, independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500, and qualified online one-to-one runs around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. Monthly packages advertised locally include AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions and AED 799 for eight online sessions. Those figures come from the providers themselves as of October 2026; none of them is ours.

There is a hidden component that never appears on a rate card and matters more in computing than anywhere else: the cost of a mismatch. A tutor who has not taught the second paper of this syllabus will spend paid hours reading the specification. At AED 250 an hour, three sessions of that is AED 750 spent on somebody's preparation rather than your child's marks. The useful comparison is not rate against rate; it is total spend against measurable movement.

The table itemises the hour so a family can see which parts they are funding in each format. It is deliberately unflattering about the parts of online delivery that are genuinely worse, because a comparison that only runs one way is not a comparison.

02

The twenty-minute radius problem

  • Each filter you add shrinks a local list faster than families expect
  • The commonest local compromise is a tutor who really teaches ICT
  • Database design and Boolean logic are the topics most often missing
  • Ask which papers and which language, before booking anything

Hiring locally means hiring from everyone willing to drive to your community at the time you need. In practice that is a short list, and the list gets shorter with every constraint you add. For 0478 the constraints are unusually specific: the tutor needs to teach both papers, needs to work in the programming language the school uses, and needs to be free in the narrow band between the school bus arriving and homework starting.

Think about what each filter removes. Tutors who advertise computing but really teach ICT: removed. Tutors fluent in one language but not the school's: removed. Tutors who can teach algorithms but have never covered database design or Boolean logic, the two topics schools reach late: removed. Tutors free at 6pm on the one weekday your child has nothing else: removed. What is left in a single Dubai community is frequently nobody, and the family then compromises on the filter that matters most rather than on the convenience.

Across a national pool working over video the same filters leave a real choice, and the compromise moves to something smaller, usually the exact time of the slot. That is the trade IB Gram asks families to make. It is also why we tell you before a trial if the only available specialist does not know the school's language, rather than discovering it in week three.

One honest caveat. A wider pool is not automatically a better tutor, and an online platform that matches by availability alone is no better than a neighbour with a leaflet. The question to put to any provider, including us, is which of your child's two papers the proposed tutor has taught, and to which year groups.

03

Travel time in Dubai, counted properly

A 5pm lesson in a villa community is rarely a 5pm commitment for the tutor. Leaving enough margin to arrive reliably across Al Khail Road or Sheikh Zayed Road in the late afternoon means setting off around 4pm, and the return leg lands them home after seven. Two hours and a half of a working day for one paid hour. Multiply that across a week and the arithmetic behind the published in-home premium stops looking like a markup.

The family carries its own version of the same problem. Students bussing from communities on the southern corridor or the eastern edge to schools elsewhere in the city often arrive home well after four, which pushes a realistic start past five. Co-curricular commitments fill the next hour. The genuinely available windows in a Dubai school week are narrower than the calendar suggests, and a visiting tutor has to fit inside the same gaps while also driving to them.

Then there is the failure mode. A visiting tutor delayed by an accident on the Al Khail arrives at 5:40pm for a 5pm lesson, and the hour becomes thirty-five rushed minutes. Over a term, two or three of those are normal. An online slot is exposed to a connection problem instead, which is less frequent and recoverable within a minute or two.

None of this argues that in-home tuition fails. It argues that the travel is a real part of what is bought, and that for a subject where the materials live on a screen anyway, paying for the drive buys very little. We are explicit about our position: IB Gram does not provide home visits anywhere in the UAE, because the version we can run well is the online one.

04

Why code is the strongest case for a shared screen

Most subjects lose something when they move to video. Computing gains. The work already lives inside a screen, and the two activities a 0478 student most needs, running code and converting it into handwritten exam form, are both easier when the tutor can see and control the same editor rather than peering at a laptop from the side of a dining table.

A live session will typically run a student's own program, break it deliberately by changing a condition, and ask what the error message reveals about the logic. Then the same algorithm gets written out by hand in pseudocode and traced in a table, because that is the form the exam requires and nothing in a student's normal coding life ever asks for it. Both halves of that happen in front of the student rather than being described to them.

The artefact matters as much as the lesson. Annotated pseudocode, the trace table as it was built, and the corrected program are saved and sent afterwards, which means by February the student is revising from their own worked examples rather than from a textbook. Parents can see the file too, which is a more honest progress report than a verbal summary at the door.

The table sets the two formats against each other task by task. Three rows favour the room, and they are included because this decision deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. A parent choosing in-home tuition for a thirteen-year-old who will not settle to a screen is making a reasonable choice, and no comparison table should pretend otherwise.

05

Group classes and tuition centres: the third option

Dubai families weighing a home tutor usually also look at a tuition centre or a small group class, because the per-student rate is lower. For some subjects that is sound value. For 0478 it is the weakest of the three options, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of teaching quality.

A group works when the students share a gap. In computer science they rarely do. One student cannot trace a loop, another cannot convert hexadecimal, a third programs fluently and writes unmarkable prose on the systems paper. An hour spent on any one of those is an hour two of them did not need. The group then defaults to covering content everyone has already met, which feels productive and moves nobody.

Centres with premises in Dubai also sit under a different regulatory regime from individual tutors. A tuition business with staff and premises requires an educational services permit for a training institute from KHDA, with initial approval first and annual renewal, while an individual tutor needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit. The two are not interchangeable, and a centre's permit says nothing about whether the person teaching your child holds one.

Where a group does earn its place is early coverage in Year 10, before gaps diverge, and occasionally for a shared theory revision block on the systems paper, where every candidate needs the same six topics. For algorithm and logic work in the spring of Year 11, one-to-one is the format that matches the problem, because by then no two students in a room are losing marks in the same place.

06

What a parent should see after six weeks

Tutoring is bought on faith and should be judged on evidence. For 0478 the evidence is unusually concrete, because the things that cost marks are countable. A parent paying from AED 150 an hour upward is entitled to see movement in specific places rather than to be told the sessions are going well.

The first is trace table completeness. In week one most students produce tables with skipped iterations and missing intermediate values. By week five, three timed tables out of three should be complete, even if a value or two is wrong. That single change is usually worth more Paper 2 marks than any amount of new content.

The second is the scored topic list from the diagnostic. Weak rows should have moved and the list should be shorter, with the remaining rows named. The third is answer grain on the systems paper: a two-mark describe question answered with two distinct technical points rather than a paragraph. The fourth, for students who were avoiding code, is simply whether they now write an algorithm by hand without being asked twice.

At six weeks we compare the first marked work with the most recent and give a view in writing, including when the view is that the plan should change or that a different tutor would be a better fit. Changing tutor at a review point costs nothing. Continuing for a term because nobody looked at the evidence is the expensive outcome.

Does Computer Science count towards Ministry of Education equivalency?

Families planning a UAE university route ask this, and the answer is specific enough to be worth stating carefully. For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects.

Computer Science 0478 is an accredited IGCSE subject, so it can sit inside that count of five. One competitor page ranking for these queries states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which does not match the published rule; the number in the Ministry's clarification is five. That is the kind of detail worth checking against the source rather than taking from a tutoring website, including this one.

For the American track the same clarification sets out different requirements: English proficiency evidenced by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and at least 450 in SAT Mathematics. For the International Baccalaureate, no points threshold has been verified from the Ministry's own pages, so no figure appears here; ask the Ministry or the emirate's attestation authority directly.

Two boundaries matter. Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry of Education, not by any tutoring provider, and nobody should present it as something they perform or can expedite. And tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, university admission or school progression. Anyone implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency around a regulatory process.

Seven questions to ask before you hire anyone for 0478

Most of the risk in this purchase is removed in one conversation. The questions below are the ones that separate a computing specialist from a general tutor who lists computing, and they work equally well on us as on anyone advertising in a community group.

Start with the papers. Which of the two have you taught, and to which year groups? A tutor who talks only about programming is describing half the qualification. Then the language: which text-based language do you teach, and will you work in the one the school uses? Then the late topics: how do you teach database design and Boolean logic? If the answer is vague, those marks will stay lost.

Then the mechanics. How is work set between sessions, and is handwritten algorithm practice part of it? How will I see progress, and when? What happens if the match does not work? And finally the permit question, which is entirely reasonable to ask in this market: do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023? It is issued free of charge for two years, so there is no cost reason for a tutor not to hold one.

Our own answers are on this page. IB Gram delivers one-to-one online lessons in the UAE and no home visits; holds no accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education or Cambridge; occupies no UAE office; publishes no price list, because a free first lesson and a written plan produce a more honest quote; and promises no grades, because examiners mark a script written on one morning.

SEVEN VETTING QUESTIONS, WITH THE ANSWERS WORTH HEARING
Ask thisA good answer sounds likeA warning sign
Which of the two papers have you taught? Both, to Year 10 and Year 11, with examplesTalks only about teaching programming
Which language will you work in?The one your child's school usesInsists on their preferred language
How do you teach database design and logic?A specific method and a number of sessionsTreats them as minor topics to fit in later
Is handwritten algorithm work set between sessions?Yes, weekly, because the exam is handwrittenAll practice happens at a keyboard
How and when will I see progress?Named evidence at a fixed review pointGeneral reassurance about engagement
Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition permit?Yes, and here is the positionDismisses the question as unnecessary

Dubai communities and what a visiting tutor would face there

These notes describe travel and timing, because that is the part of in-home tuition nobody quantifies before they book it. Online delivery removes it entirely, which in several of these communities is the difference between a tutor being available and not.

Arabian Ranches

Villa community with one school inside it and a 25 to 40 minute drive to most others. A visiting tutor arriving for a 5pm lesson commits well over two hours of their day, and the published in-home rates in this part of the city reflect it.

The Lakes and The Meadows

Gated villa communities with security procedures at the gate that add time to every visit. Families here often run two children in different year groups, where staggered online slots work and a single visit does not.

Emirates Hills

Large plots, long internal roads and limited through-traffic, so a tutor unfamiliar with the community loses time finding the villa. Evening sessions are the norm and cancellations are expensive for everyone involved.

Jumeirah Park and Al Furjan

Mid-density villa and townhouse communities with students at schools spread along the southern corridor. School bus runs are long here, so a student may not be free until well after five even with an early finish.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer community with recently opened schools and growing Year 10 and Year 11 cohorts. Demand for computing support rises each spring, and the local specialist pool has not grown with it.

Al Quoz and Barsha Heights

Mixed industrial and residential districts with heavy late-afternoon traffic on the main arteries. A tutor crossing Al Khail Road at 5pm is subject to the same delays as the family's own commute.

Umm Al Sheif and Al Safa

Established villa areas close to several long-standing British-curriculum schools. The local tutor market here is comparatively deep for maths and English and still thin for 0478 Paper 2.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Production City

Peripheral communities where a visiting tutor's travel time can exceed the lesson. These are the households where online delivery is least a compromise and most an improvement.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Emirates Hills, The Lakes and Arabian Ranches

A cluster of long-established schools serving villa communities with low turnover. Computing provision here is generally settled, with a named subject teacher and a predictable option block, so a tutor's work is usually exam technique rather than coverage.

  • Safa Community School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Kings' School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington International School

Jumeirah Park, Al Furjan and Jebel Ali

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marks, the language and the school

The useful first message gives the last mock marks for each paper separately, the programming language the school teaches, and the year group. That is enough for us to say whether a 0478 specialist is free at the hours you can use, before anybody books anything.

The student rates themselves across the syllabus topics, writes one short algorithm by hand and completes one trace table. It produces a ranked list of what to fix, which replaces a generic plan to revise the subject.

  3. 03

Free first lesson over live video

Sixty minutes with the matched tutor, spent on the weakest item from the diagnostic. No card details are taken and there is no obligation afterwards. Parents are welcome to listen to the first twenty minutes.

  4. 04

A written plan with a cost in AED

After the trial you get the plan and the price together: which paper first, how many sessions to the review, what is set between them, and what will be measurable at six weeks. If a short block is the right purchase rather than a term, the plan says so.

  5. 05

Review on evidence at six weeks

We compare the diagnostic with current work against the checklist on this page. Changing tutor at that point costs nothing, stopping costs nothing, and continuing should be a decision made from the scripts rather than from habit.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The travel component is simply removed

Published in-home rates in Dubai run from AED 180 to 500 an hour because a tutor's drive is inside them. Online delivery takes that component out of the hour you fund, and nothing about the teaching changes.

A national pool instead of a twenty-minute radius

0478 specialists who teach both papers, including database design and Boolean logic, are scarce in any one community. Matching over video replaces the postcode filter with the ones that decide marks.

Matched to the school's programming language

Dubai schools teach different text-based languages for this syllabus. We match the tutor to the school rather than to the tutor's preference, because switching language in Year 11 costs weeks for no marks.

Evidence at a fixed review point

Trace table completeness, a scored topic list, answer grain on theory questions and timed paper performance, compared against week one at six weeks and written down. Changing tutor at that point costs nothing.

Market rates published with their sources

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate survey that published it in 2026. Our own number arrives after a free first lesson, with a written plan, in AED.

No claims we cannot stand behind

No regulator or board accreditation, no UAE office, no home visits in the UAE, no grade promises, and no involvement in producing work that must be the student's own. The limits are on the page rather than in a footer.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Can IB Gram provide a tutor who comes to our house in Dubai for 0478?+

No. Sending a tutor to a family's address is something we do only in India, and every UAE lesson is delivered one-to-one over live video on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot. We state it plainly because the search term is a home tutor and a parent should not book a trial expecting a doorbell. For this subject the online format is also the stronger one: the tutor sees and controls the same editor, runs the student's code, and sends the annotated pseudocode and trace tables afterwards.

How much does in-home computer science tuition cost per month in Dubai?+

Advertised in-home packages in the city include AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour sessions, while online packages advertise around AED 799 a month for eight sessions. On an hourly basis, Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table gives AED 180 to 350 for in-home one-to-one and independent tutors advertise up to AED 500, against AED 150 to 300 for qualified online one-to-one. Those are the providers' own published figures as of October 2026. IB Gram quotes in AED after a free first lesson.

How many tutors near us have actually taught both 0478 papers?+

Fewer than families expect. Filter a local list by tutors who teach the systems paper as well as algorithms, who work in the language the school uses, who have covered database design and Boolean logic, and who are free in the narrow window after the school bus arrives, and a single community often has nobody left. That is the arithmetic behind online matching. Ask any provider, including us, which of the two papers the proposed tutor has taught and to which year groups.

Does a tutor's travel time really change what I pay?+

It is most of the difference between the published bands. A visiting tutor leaving at four to reach a villa community reliably for a five o'clock lesson commits well over two hours of their day for one paid hour, plus fuel and tolls, and a late cancellation usually leaves a hole they cannot fill. Published Dubai in-home rates of AED 180 to 500 an hour reflect that, against AED 150 to 300 online. The teaching in both bands can be equally good.

Is screen sharing really better than sitting beside my child for coding work?+

For algorithm and programming work, yes, and for two concrete reasons. Both people see and control the same editor, so a tutor can run the program, change a condition to break it deliberately, and show what the error reveals. And everything produced is saved: annotated pseudocode, the trace table as it was built, the corrected code. A tutor in the room leans over one laptop and leaves pencil marks. Where the room genuinely wins is with younger or very distractible students.

Can two children in the same house share one session?+

We schedule siblings back to back rather than together. A shared hour sounds efficient and works badly in this subject, because two students almost never have the same gap: one cannot trace a loop, the other cannot convert hexadecimal. Consecutive one-to-one slots give each child undivided time and still disrupt only one evening. Different subjects and different year groups are fine, and each child is reviewed on their own evidence at the six-week point.

What should I ask a computer science tutor before hiring them?+

Seven things: which of the two papers they have taught and to which year groups; which text-based language they will work in; how they teach database design and Boolean logic; whether handwritten algorithm practice is set between sessions; how and when you will see progress; whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is issued free of charge for two years; and what happens if the match is wrong. Vague answers on the late topics usually mean those marks stay lost.

Is a tuition centre group class worth it for computer science?+

It is the weakest of the three formats for this subject, though it has a place. Groups work when students share a gap, and in computing they rarely do, so an hour spent on one student's problem is an hour the others did not need. Centres also sit under a different regime: a tuition business with premises in Dubai requires an educational services permit for a training institute from KHDA, while an individual tutor needs the MoHRE permit. A centre's permit tells you nothing about the person teaching.

What progress should I see after six weeks of 0478 support?+

Four countable things. Trace tables completed in full rather than with skipped iterations. A shorter weak-topic list than the one from the first diagnostic. Two-mark describe questions answered with two distinct technical points instead of a paragraph. And handwritten algorithm work produced without being asked twice. Those are visible in the scripts, and we put a written view at six weeks including when the honest view is to change tutor or stop. No tutor can promise a grade.

Does IGCSE Computer Science count towards UAE equivalency?+

It is an accredited IGCSE subject, so it can form part of the published British-track requirement: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no lower than grade E or grade 3, plus one A Level at grade E or two AS Levels. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. One ranking competitor states that six subjects are required, which does not match the published rule. Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry of Education, not by any tutoring provider, so verify your child's combination through the Ministry's own channel.

Can we buy a short block of sessions rather than committing to a term?+

Yes, and for many Year 10 families it is the right purchase. A diagnostic block of three or four sessions scores the student across the syllabus topics, tests one handwritten algorithm and one trace table, and ends with a written view rather than an automatic renewal. Sometimes that view is that no further tuition is needed yet, which is a legitimate outcome. Nothing rolls over without a decision, and there is no term paid in advance.

What happens if the tutor and my child are not a good fit?+

You say so and we change the tutor, at no cost, at the six-week review or earlier if it is clearly wrong. A mismatch in this subject is usually specific rather than personal: the tutor is strong on theory and light on algorithms, or works in a different language from the school. Naming which it is makes the second match better. What we try to avoid is a family continuing for a term because nobody looked at the evidence and the sessions felt pleasant enough.

What equipment does my child need at home for online computing lessons?+

A laptop with a working camera and microphone, a stable connection, headphones, and whatever development environment the school uses already installed. A tablet is workable for theory sessions and poor for code. Paper and a pen matter as much as the laptop, because algorithm work is set by hand. No software purchase is required from us, and we send a link rather than asking anyone to install a platform.

Can sessions be scheduled around Dubai school bus timings?+

That is usually the first scheduling constraint we work around. Students bussing from southern or eastern communities to schools elsewhere in the city often arrive home well after four, which pushes a realistic start past five, and co-curricular commitments then fill the next hour. The busiest slots we hold for Year 11 sit between seven and half past eight. The slot is fixed weekly, moves for Ramadan if a family asks, and continues across time zones when a family travels.

Why does IB Gram not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE?+

Because the version we can run well at scale is the online one, and pretending otherwise would mean sending whoever is nearest rather than whoever teaches the syllabus. Visiting tutors are a service we run only in India, where the operating model supports it. In the UAE every lesson is one-to-one over live video, which removes the travel component from the published AED 180 to 500 in-home band and replaces a twenty-minute radius with a national pool of specialists.

Price the hour properly, then decide

If you are comparing a visiting tutor at AED 250 an hour with an online specialist at a lower rate, the useful comparison is not the two numbers. It is what each hour contains and whether the tutor has taught the paper your child is losing marks on. Send the last mock marks for each paper, the school and the programming language in use, and we will tell you whether a 0478 specialist has a slot you can use. The first lesson is free, no card details are taken, and the plan that follows arrives in writing with a figure in AED.
