Cambridge IGCSE English Literature 0475 Online Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE English Literature 0475 online tutor in Dubai does something a classroom cannot: sixty uninterrupted minutes on one student's writing, with the poem on a shared screen and the annotations saved afterwards. IB Gram runs these lessons live, one-to-one, on a fixed weekly slot set to Gulf Standard Time, matched to the texts your child's school has entered. This page sets out exactly how an hour is spent, how often an essay should be marked, and what changes within six weeks.

  • Sixty minutes of live video, one student, one tutor, no class
  • Annotated text and marked script saved and sent after each lesson
  • Slots held in Gulf Standard Time, including after-Iftar options in Ramadan

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

An hour of live video, spent on one student's writing

The honest case for online literature tuition is not convenience. It is concentration. In a Year 11 class of twenty-four, a student who writes a weak second paragraph gets a margin comment. In sixty minutes of one-to-one video, that paragraph gets rebuilt in front of them, with the tutor asking what the chosen quotation is actually doing and the student having to answer. Nothing else in a school week works that way, and it is why one hour a week moves essay marks when four hours of rereading does not.

The second reason is the artefact. Everything a literature tutor does happens to a document: a poem being annotated, an essay being marked, a plan being built in five minutes against a question's exact wording. On a shared screen those documents are saved and sent after the lesson. By March a student has a folder of annotated texts and marked scripts in their own hands, and revision runs on those rather than on a tutor's notes they never see.

Dubai makes a third argument. Secondary students at schools along the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor are often not home before half past four, and a tutor driving the same roads is caught in the same traffic. A 7:15pm video slot is a 7:15pm slot. When a family travels during Eid or the summer, the lesson follows them. During Ramadan, sessions can move to after Iftar without anyone redrawing their evening around a commute.

What this page is not is a defence of online tuition in general. In-home one-to-one is a real product in this city, widely advertised at published rates between roughly AED 180 and AED 500 an hour, and for younger children it has advantages. IB Gram does not sell it anywhere in the UAE, because sending tutors to family addresses is a service we run only in India. For closed-book literature essay work at 15 and 16, the shared screen is the better tool anyway.

One more thing shapes how these lessons are run. Literature marks move on a writing cycle rather than on contact hours, so the live hour is deliberately not where the essays get written. The student writes to the clock between sessions, the tutor marks the script in the gap, and the next hour starts from a diagnosis instead of a discussion. Families who book two sessions a week and skip the writing spend twice as much for less movement, which is worth knowing before a plan is agreed rather than after a term of it.

The rest of this page is operational detail: how one session is structured, why poetry, prose and drama need three different approaches, how the marking cycle works, what the unseen paper requires, how 0475 interacts with First Language English on the same timetable, what a weekly slot has to survive in a Dubai school week, and what the whole arrangement comes to in a household budget across a term.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Dubai families reach 0475 from several directions, and leave it for several more. These are the programme routes that matter for a literature student in this emirate, and what each transition actually demands.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475

Two years of whole-text study assessed by closed-book essays. Poetry and prose are examined together in one paper carrying half the grade; drama is examined either in a single closed-book paper or split between an open-text paper and an unseen paper. The school chooses the route and the texts.

Across Dubai's private sector the British curriculum is the largest single track by enrolment, at 37 per cent of the emirate's private intake in 2024-25, so 0475 cohorts here are large and school text choices vary widely. KHDA inspects these schools annually on a six-band scale. Two students in neighbouring villas can sit entirely different plays, which is why online matching is done on the text list rather than the neighbourhood.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Language and Literature

The IB alternative to IGCSE in the same age band, assessed against four criteria by the school rather than by external closed-book papers. Students arriving into a British-curriculum school from MYP often write perceptive analysis and have never written to a ninety-minute clock.

Dubai has a substantial IB sector, with International Baccalaureate schools taking 7 per cent of private enrolment in 2024-25 and three new IB schools among the seven opening for 2026-27. Transfers between the two systems mid-secondary are common here because of job moves, and a student switching into Year 10 or 11 of a British school needs the examination discipline taught explicitly rather than assumed.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma English A: Literature

One of the post-16 routes out of 0475, assessed through a guided textual analysis, a comparative essay, an individual oral and a written assignment rather than through closed-book papers alone. Wider reading and independent judgement matter considerably more than at IGCSE.

Dubai students choose between A Level and the IB Diploma in the spring of Year 11, before IGCSE results exist. A literature candidate heading for English A should be reading beyond the set list by then; the gap between the last 0475 paper in the summer and September is the natural window, and online sessions through the holidays are how most families use it.

AS/AAges 16-17 · Year 12

Cambridge International AS Level English Literature

The other post-16 route, where unseen criticism carries real weight and model answers stop working. Students who reached high IGCSE bands by memorising a tutor's paragraph structures tend to stall in the first term unless the habit is broken early.

Several Dubai schools run AS Level as a standalone year before deciding on the full A Level, which gives a literature student an early external checkpoint. Tutors working with Year 12 students in this emirate spend much of term one on independent reading habits, because the step up from a set-text IGCSE to open critical response is the point where confident students are most often caught out.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subjects below sit next to 0475 on Dubai timetables. Each note names the skill that transfers and the one that does not, because families choosing where to spend tutoring hours need that distinction more than a subject list.

Literature in English (0475)

Two component routes

Closed-book essays on poetry, prose and drama, with all four assessment objectives carrying equal weight. Knowing the text well earns a quarter of what is available, which is why thorough students still land mid-band.

World Literature (0408)

Single tier

Cambridge's literature-in-translation option, taken at a minority of Dubai schools. The analytical demand overlaps heavily with 0475, though the handling of translated language needs its own treatment and a tutor who has taught it.

First Language English (0500)

Extended entry

Directed writing, composition and reading comprehension. Fluency transfers into literature essays; the habit of writing at length without textual evidence does not, and often actively costs marks in 0475.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

The alternative English entry at many Dubai schools. A student taking ESL alongside 0475 is doing something genuinely demanding, since literature essays assume a first-language range of expression under time pressure.

Drama (0411)

Single tier

Performance and written work on play texts. The most useful companion subject for the drama component of 0475, because it trains students to read a scene as something staged rather than as dialogue on a page.

History (0470 / 0977)

Core and Extended

Source evaluation under time pressure. The transferable habit is treating evidence as something to be interrogated rather than quoted, which is exactly the move that lifts a literature paragraph out of the middle bands.

Geography (0460)

Core and Extended

Structured extended answers with specific case-study detail. Students who write in generalities tend to do so across subjects, and fixing it in one often shows up in the other within a term.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

Research, argument and reflective writing. Builds the habit of holding a position while acknowledging a counter-view, which strengthens the personal-response objective in literature answers.

Economics (0455)

Core and Extended

Data response and evaluative paragraphs. Included because option blocks collide: a student carrying both 0455 and 0475 has two essay-heavy subjects in the same exam fortnight and needs a revision plan that admits it.

Information and Communication Technology (0417)

Single tier

Largely practical, which makes it the usual counterweight on a Dubai option block for a student who also takes literature. Different revision rhythm entirely, and the week has to be planned around that difference.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

How families structure online 0475 support. The right shape depends mostly on whether the bottleneck is understanding the texts or producing a full answer inside the clock.

Weekly sixty-minute slot

The default. One live hour each week on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot with the same tutor, following the school's own sequence through the texts. Between lessons the student writes one piece of work and the tutor marks it, so the live hour is spent on diagnosis rather than on reading aloud.

  • Same tutor, same time, saved annotations
  • Marking happens between sessions, not during them
  • Work follows the class, so nothing is taught twice
  • Slot can shift for Ramadan or exam weeks without losing the place

Ninety-minute fortnightly deep session

Suits students who already write adequately and need whole-text coverage rather than paragraph repair. A longer session can take an entire act or a full poetry cluster in one pass, with a timed essay set at the end and marked before the next meeting.

  • Whole scenes or poetry clusters in a single session
  • Fewer interruptions to a crowded Year 11 week
  • One timed essay per cycle, marked in between
  • Cheaper per fortnight than two weekly hours

Holiday and half-term reading blocks

Short runs of sessions during school breaks, used for the work the term never has room for: finishing a set text, starting unseen practice, or reading ahead before Year 12. Lessons run from wherever the family happens to be.

  • Two or three sessions a week for two or three weeks
  • Runs through travel, including across time zones
  • Common use: unseen practice started in the spring break
  • No requirement to continue into term time

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What actually happens in one live sixty-minute lesson

Parents paying for online tuition reasonably want to know what the hour contains. A good 0475 session is not a conversation about a book. It has a fixed shape, most of it spent with the student writing or speaking rather than listening, and it produces two things by the end: an annotated text and a specific instruction for the week.

The opening five minutes are administrative in the useful sense: what came back from school, what the class is on, what the student found hard in the essay they wrote. Then roughly fifteen minutes on the marked script, which is the heart of the lesson. The tutor does not read the comments aloud. They pick the two faults that cost the most marks and make the student fix one paragraph live, out loud, before writing it.

The middle twenty minutes move to new material: a passage from the current text, annotated together on screen. The student is asked what is unusual about the language before any interpretation is offered, because the habit being built is noticing first and concluding second. The last fifteen minutes are planning practice against a real question, timed to five minutes, followed by setting the week's timed essay.

Nothing about that shape is improvised, and nothing in it requires a tutor in the room. The table below sets out the standard structure, which tutors adjust by student but rarely abandon, because the parts that feel least comfortable for the student are usually the parts doing the work.

STANDARD SHAPE OF A 60-MINUTE ONLINE 0475 SESSION

02

Poetry, prose and drama need three different approaches

Students and tutors both tend to treat literature as one skill applied to three kinds of book. The marking does not work that way. A strong poetry answer looks different from a strong prose answer, which looks different again from a strong drama answer, and a student who has one gear produces a flat paragraph in the other two.

Poetry rewards attention to shape: where a line breaks, where a stanza pattern is disrupted, where a rhyme that has been steady suddenly disappears. Those observations are visible on the page and do not require a judgement about meaning first. Prose rewards narrative technique: who is telling this, what are they not telling us, how does the writer control what the reader knows and when. Drama rewards stagecraft: entrances, silences, who is on stage listening, what an audience sees that a character does not.

The practical consequence for a weekly plan is that each genre needs its own run of sessions rather than a general rotation. Most students arrive strongest on prose, because that is what they read for pleasure, and weakest on drama, because they have read the play as a book. Diagnosing which gear is missing takes one marked essay per genre, which is roughly three weeks of work, and it is time well spent before any revision plan is drawn.

The table is the version of this we give students to keep. It is deliberately phrased as what the question rewards rather than as advice, because 'analyse more deeply' is the instruction every mid-band candidate has already heard and cannot act on.

WHAT EACH GENRE'S QUESTIONS REWARD IN 0475
GenreWhat the answer must noticeThe classic mid-band failureWhat practice looks like
PoetryLine breaks, stanza shape, rhyme and rhythm shifts, a change of tense or addressParaphrasing the poem line by line and calling it analysisMarking the shape of an unfamiliar poem in four minutes, repeatedly
ProseNarrative voice, what the narrator withholds, pacing, shifts in perspectiveRetelling the story accurately and quoting a long passageRewriting one paragraph to argue about technique instead of events
DramaEntrances and exits, stage silence, who overhears, audience knowledgeTreating dialogue as conversation and ignoring the stage entirelyReading key scenes aloud and asking what the audience sees

03

The marking cycle is where the grade actually moves

If a family can only afford one structural change, it should be this one: a timed essay written every week or fortnight, marked by the same person, with the feedback keyed to the same four objectives each time. Marks move on that cycle. They do not move on contact hours, which is the mistake families make when they book two sessions a week and skip the writing.

The reason is that a literature essay is a performance under constraints, and performances improve by being repeated and reviewed. A student who writes one essay a month produces a dozen a year and has no basis for noticing a recurring fault. A student writing one a week produces thirty-odd, and by the fourth or fifth the tutor can say with evidence: you lose marks in the second half of every essay because you spend eleven minutes on your first paragraph.

Marking has to be specific to be useful. 'More analysis' and 'develop your points' are accurate and unusable. Useful marking names the mechanism: this quotation is four lines long and you comment on none of its words; this paragraph argues about the character rather than about the writing; this conclusion restates your introduction and earns nothing. A student can act on each of those by Tuesday.

The last part of the cycle is the one most often skipped: redrafting one paragraph, not the whole essay. Rewriting an entire script teaches endurance. Rewriting a single paragraph with a named fault removed teaches the fix, and takes fifteen minutes rather than ninety. Across a term, that single discipline is the most reliable change we see in Dubai students' scripts.

04

The unseen paper is a method, not a memory test

  • Read twice; mark what is visibly unusual before interpreting
  • Build the answer from the most concrete observation outward
  • Short weekly attempts beat occasional full essays
  • Nothing to memorise, so progress holds over a holiday

Where a school has entered the route that includes an unseen component, revision behaves differently. Nothing about rereading set texts prepares a student for a poem they have never met. Students who are excellent on prepared material frequently come out of the unseen paper having written half a page of guesses, because they have never been shown a procedure for the first ten minutes.

The procedure we teach is mechanical on purpose. Read it twice, once for sense and once with a pen. Mark the three or four things that are visibly unusual: a word that does not belong in its sentence, a shift in tense, a line that stops early, a sentence that runs far longer than its neighbours. Decide, from those marks alone, what the writer appears to be doing to the reader. Build the answer on that, with the most concrete observation first.

Students resist this because it feels like it skips interpretation, and good interpretation is exactly what it produces: an argument built from evidence rather than a theme asserted and then illustrated. Once the method is reliable, speed comes with practice. Fifteen or twenty short attempts across a spring term is usually enough to turn the paper from the one a student dreads into the one they prefer, because there is nothing to forget.

Practically, this is weekly work from January, with a full-length marked response every second or third week. It is also the single best use of a holiday block, since the material is endless and none of it depends on where the class has got to.

05

Literature and First Language English on the same timetable

Nearly every Dubai student sitting 0475 is also sitting an English language qualification, usually First Language English 0500 and sometimes English as a Second Language. The same teacher often takes both. That arrangement is efficient for the school and quietly confusing for the student, because the two subjects reward opposite instincts at the sentence level.

0500 rewards fluency, range and control. A strong composition sustains a voice and moves at pace. 0475 rewards restraint and evidence: a short quotation, a close comment on its words, a link to the question. A student who carries 0500 habits into a literature paper writes confidently and generally, and lands in the middle. A student who carries literature habits into 0500 writes carefully and runs out of time.

The useful thing a tutor can do is name the switch explicitly, so the student knows which mode they are in. We often ask a student to write the same 200 words twice, once as a 0500 descriptive paragraph and once as a 0475 analytical one, which makes the difference obvious in a way no amount of explanation does.

Where tutoring hours are limited, the choice between the two is usually decided by the marks: whichever subject sits further below the student's demonstrated ability is the one to fund first. Occasionally the answer is neither, and the real problem is timed writing speed, which both papers punish heavily and which can be fixed once for both subjects at the same time.

Fitting a weekly slot into a Dubai school week

Scheduling is the part of online tutoring that quietly decides whether it works. A slot that fights the family's week gets cancelled twice in February and never recovers. The practical constraints in Dubai are specific enough to plan around, and worth setting out before a first lesson rather than after three rescheduled ones.

School end times in the emirate cluster between half past two and half past three, but bus runs stretch that considerably for students travelling from communities like Al Furjan, International City or Town Square to schools elsewhere in the city. A student who finishes at 2:45pm may genuinely not be free until 5pm. Co-curricular commitments then occupy four to six most days, which is why 7pm and 7:30pm are the busiest slots we hold.

Two seasonal factors matter. During Ramadan, families frequently want sessions after Iftar, and the slot moves for the month rather than pausing. Over the summer and during Eid, many Dubai families travel; lessons continue across time zones, which is one of the clearer practical advantages over a visiting tutor. Exam fortnights are the other adjustment, when weekly sessions sometimes pause by agreement so the student can sleep.

There is one constraint we state rather than smooth over. Specialists for particular set texts are not infinite, and the best slots in term two go first. If the tutor who has taught your child's exact texts is not free at 7pm on a Tuesday, the honest options are a different time, a different week's start, or a different tutor with the trade-off explained. We say which, rather than filling the slot with whoever is available.

What a term of online 0475 support costs in a Dubai budget

Tutoring is a recurring household cost, so the useful question is not the hourly rate but what a term comes to and what it realistically changes. Published market estimates for Dubai put a weekly one-hour arrangement at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, according to Bestimate's 2026 tutoring cost tables. Monthly packages advertised locally include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Those numbers sit in a market where school fees are the dominant education cost and have been held flat: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. For families budgeting a tutoring year, that stability is the backdrop, and it is why a predictable monthly figure tends to matter more than the headline hourly rate.

What a term of weekly sessions buys, honestly stated, is about twelve marked essays, twelve annotated texts and a student who can plan an answer in five minutes. That is usually enough to move a script out of the middle bands if the writing habit was the problem. It is not enough to compensate for a set text the student has not read, and no amount of money solves that; reading does.

IB Gram's own arrangement is a free first lesson with the matched tutor, no card details taken, then a written plan and a quote in AED. The market figures above are other providers' published rates as of October 2026, included so that our quote lands in context. We publish no price list on these pages because the right plan for a Year 10 student starting early and a Year 11 student six weeks out are not the same product.

What an online tutor will not do, and who may legally teach

Two boundaries are worth stating in plain terms, because the English tutoring market in this region contains providers who cross both. The first is authorship. A tutor marks, questions, models on unrelated material and sends a student back to redraft in their own words. A tutor does not produce the paragraph that will be submitted. Work sent to Cambridge must be the candidate's own, and anything else puts the student at risk rather than the provider.

The second is what may be supplied. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables belong to Cambridge. A tutor references them and points to the official source; redistributing them as downloads is not something we do. Where a student needs past material, the school and the board's own published resources are the route, and a tutor's job is to teach the student how to use them.

On legality, private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated rather than informal. The private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued by MoHRE free of charge for two years, with eligibility extending to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you.

One further point from Abu Dhabi worth knowing even in Dubai: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct along the same lines. Any offer of your child's own class teacher, privately, is one to decline. IB Gram holds no accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or any school, has no UAE office, and does not claim otherwise.

Where we tutor

Where our Dubai 0475 students log in from

What matters for an online slot is not distance but the shape of the evening: when the student gets home, whether there is a quiet corner, and what else is in the diary. These notes describe that, community by community.

Jumeirah Lake Towers

Tower apartments with students at schools across the Marina, Al Barsha and Jumeirah. Lessons are usually taken in a bedroom with headphones, which works fine and solves the shared-table problem of apartment study.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Short commutes but busy diaries, with co-curriculars stacked between four and six. Slots from 7pm hold best here, and the fixed weekly time matters more than the exact hour.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

Several large schools inside the community and families who moved for them. Students often get home early, which makes a 5pm slot realistic in a way it rarely is in cross-city communities.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Villa communities with newer secondary provision nearby and long drives to older schools. Online sessions remove the second journey of the evening, which is usually the one families resent.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Mixed housing with schools in Jebel Ali and The Gardens. Bus runs here are long, so a student may not be free until after five even when the school day ends at half past two.

Town Square and Dubailand

Fast-growing communities on the city's southern edge where secondary cohorts are still small. Set-text lists differ widely between the schools families drive to, so matching is done per student.

International City and Al Nahda

Dense, affordable housing with students spread across many schools in Deira and Garhoud. Evening slots dominate, and sibling sessions back to back are common.

Palm Jumeirah and Dubai Marina

Apartment and villa mix with families who travel frequently in school holidays. Continuity through travel is the practical reason several of these households chose online lessons over a visiting tutor.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Dubailand

A cluster of schools that have opened or expanded in the last decade, running British and IB programmes side by side. Text choices here are less settled than in older schools, so a tutor matched on last year's list is matched on the wrong one.

  • GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis
  • Fairgreen International School
  • GEMS FirstPoint School
  • The Aquila School
  • Repton Al Barsha

Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Al Jaddaf

Villa communities served by a mix of long-established and recently built schools, several of them running both IGCSE and the IB Diploma. Students here frequently move between the two systems within one school, which changes what a literature tutor needs to cover.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Repton Dubai
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School

The Greens, JLT and Jumeirah Park

Apartment-heavy communities where students travel short distances to a wide spread of schools. The practical consequence is that neighbours sit different papers, which is the single strongest argument for matching tutors by syllabus rather than by area.

  • Regent International School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Sunmarke School
  • Arcadia Global School

These school names describe the Dubai market that students we support attend, and are listed as context only; no affiliation with or endorsement by any named school or group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the entry route and this term's texts

Name the school, the year group, which components the school has entered, and the texts currently being studied. That is enough to tell you within a day whether a specialist who has taught those texts is available at the times you can use.

  2. 02

A short written diagnostic before the trial

We ask the student to respond to one unfamiliar extract in twenty minutes. It is not a test to pass; it shows a tutor what the student notices unprompted, which is the single most useful piece of information before a first lesson.

Free first lesson, live and one-to-one

Sixty minutes over video with the matched tutor, structured as a real session rather than an introduction. No card details are taken and there is no obligation to continue. The student should leave with one named habit to change.

  4. 04

A written plan with a genre order

You receive a plan naming which genre to attack first, how many sessions before a review, what gets written between lessons, and what will be visible in six weeks. If the honest answer is that tutoring is not the right spend yet, that is what the plan says.

  5. 05

    Six-week review against marked work

At six weeks we compare the first marked essay with the most recent one and discuss whether the plan is working. Changing tutor at that point is normal and costs nothing; continuing without evidence of movement is the outcome to avoid.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The hour has a shape, and we publish it

Sessions follow the structure set out on this page rather than drifting into discussion. Parents know what the sixty minutes contains, and students know what will be asked of them before they log in.

Marking between sessions, not during them

Essays are marked in the gap between lessons and returned annotated against the four assessment objectives, so live time is spent fixing the fault rather than discovering it.

Everything is saved and sent

Annotated texts, marked scripts and plans go to the student after each lesson. By the spring the student holds a revision folder built from their own work rather than from somebody else's notes.

Scheduling that survives a Dubai February

Fixed slots in Gulf Standard Time, after-Iftar options during Ramadan, continuity through travel, and no tutor caught in traffic on Al Khail Road. The slot that survives term two is the one that produces results.

Availability and limits stated upfront

If no specialist has taught your child's exact combination of texts, or none is free at your preferred hour, you hear that before the trial with the alternatives laid out, rather than being matched to whoever is free.

No claims we cannot stand behind

We hold no accreditation from any UAE regulator or examination board, we occupy no UAE office, we do not write assessed work, and we publish no grade promises. The market rates on this page carry the name of whoever published them.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How does an online Cambridge 0475 lesson actually work?+

It runs over live video, one tutor and one student, usually for sixty minutes on a fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time. The text or essay sits on a shared screen that both can annotate. A typical hour spends five minutes reviewing the school week, fifteen on the last marked essay with one paragraph rebuilt live, twenty annotating new material, and the last stretch on timed planning before the next essay is set. The annotated file and the marked script are saved and sent afterwards, so the student keeps everything.

Is online tutoring effective for a reading subject like literature?+

For closed-book essay work at IGCSE, it suits the subject unusually well, because almost everything a literature tutor does is done to a document. Annotation on a shared screen produces a file the student keeps; the same lesson over a paperback leaves pencil marks and no record. Essay marking is typed, searchable and comparable across a term, so a recurring fault becomes visible rather than anecdotal. The limitation is attention span in younger children, which is why this format fits Year 10 and Year 11 better than primary.

What happens in the first twenty minutes of a trial lesson?+

The tutor works on something real rather than interviewing the student. Usually that means reading a short piece of the student's own writing or a passage from the current text, asking what they notice before offering any interpretation, and then making one concrete change to how a paragraph is built. By the end of twenty minutes a parent listening nearby can usually tell whether the tutor knows the text and whether the student is being asked to think rather than to agree.

How quickly can you match an online literature tutor for a Dubai student?+

Where a specialist has already taught your child's set texts and has a free slot, a trial usually happens within a few days. Where the combination of texts is unusual, or the only times you can use are the busiest evening slots in term two, it can take longer and we say so rather than filling the slot with a generalist. If no suitable specialist is available at all, we tell you that too; it is a better outcome than three paid sessions with the wrong tutor.

Does my child need a printed copy of the set text for online lessons?+

Yes, and they should keep using the school's edition. Page and line references differ between editions, which matters when a tutor says to look at the top of page 94. The student works from their own printed copy while the tutor displays the relevant extract on the shared screen for annotation. We do not supply texts, syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes as downloads, because those belong to their publishers and to Cambridge.

How often should a timed literature essay be written and marked?+

Weekly if the student is in Year 11, fortnightly in Year 10. The cycle matters more than the frequency of lessons: a student who writes one essay a month has no basis for spotting a recurring fault, while one writing weekly accumulates enough evidence for a tutor to name the mechanism precisely. Each essay should be written to the real clock, and only one paragraph should be redrafted afterwards. Rewriting whole scripts teaches endurance rather than the fix.

Does the weekly 0475 slot keep running through Ramadan?+

Yes, and a large share of our Dubai families ask for exactly that. The slot shifts for the month and then returns to its usual time, so the weekly rhythm survives rather than pausing for four or five weeks. Some families prefer to reduce to a fortnightly session during Ramadan and add a block in the spring break instead. Either arrangement is workable; what does not work is cancelling week by week, because the marking cycle breaks and the student loses the writing habit.

Can sessions continue over the summer when we travel?+

They can, and the summer is often when the most useful work happens. Lessons run across time zones with the slot adjusted, so a family in Europe or South Asia for six weeks keeps continuity. The natural summer projects are finishing or rereading a set text, starting unseen practice, and for students heading to Year 12, reading beyond the syllabus. None of that work depends on where the class has reached, which is why it fits a holiday better than term-time catch-up does.

What does a month of online literature support cost in Dubai?+

Published market estimates for Dubai put a weekly hour at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 for a mid-market qualified tutor, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, per Bestimate's 2026 cost tables. Packaged offers advertised locally include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. Those are other providers' published figures as of October 2026. IB Gram gives a free first lesson and then quotes in AED against a written plan.

Is poetry harder than prose for most IGCSE candidates?+

Most students arrive stronger on prose, because prose is what they read for pleasure and narrative feels familiar. Poetry answers tend to be weaker not because poems are harder but because students paraphrase them line by line instead of commenting on shape: line breaks, stanza patterns, a rhyme scheme that falls away. That is a trainable observation habit rather than a matter of taste. Drama is usually the weakest of the three, since most candidates have read the play as a book and never as something staged.

What if no 0475 specialist is free at our preferred time?+

You hear that plainly, with the options. Those are usually a different slot with the specialist who knows your texts, a later start date when their diary frees up, or a different tutor with the trade-off explained in writing. Term two evenings between seven and half past eight are the tightest band in the Dubai calendar, so families booking in January should expect some negotiation. What we do not do is match a student to whoever is available and leave the text gap unmentioned.

Can one tutor cover both 0475 and First Language English 0500?+

Often, and it can be efficient, because the two subjects sit on the same timetable and share a teacher at school. The thing to watch is that they reward opposite instincts: 0500 rewards fluency and range, 0475 rewards restraint and close evidence. A tutor covering both should name the switch explicitly rather than teaching 'English'. Where hours are limited, fund the subject sitting further below the student's ability, which is frequently not the one the parent expected.

How do you measure progress in a subject marked by bands?+

By comparing marked scripts rather than by asking how the student feels. Three things are tracked: whether the recurring faults named in week one still appear, whether the second essay in a paper is now finished properly, and whether quotations have shortened and comment has lengthened. Those are visible in the writing and shown to parents at the six-week review. Band movement follows them, but no tutor can promise a specific grade, because examiners mark one script written on one morning.

Do you also teach Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Literature?+

Yes, and the first question is always which board and which specification the school has entered, because the component structure and the set text lists differ. Pearson runs its International GCSE exams in May or June and in November, with its November 2026 timetable running to 19 November 2026 and November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026. Confirm your child's series and specification with the school, then the tutor match is made against that specification rather than against a generic literature brief.

What does my child need technically for an online lesson in Dubai?+

A laptop or tablet with a working camera and microphone, a stable home connection, headphones, and the school's own printed copy of the text. A phone is workable in an emergency but poor for annotation. A quiet corner matters more than a desk; in apartment communities like Jumeirah Lake Towers most students take lessons in a bedroom with headphones, which is entirely fine. No software purchase is required, and nothing needs installing beyond the video application we send a link for.

Book a free lesson and see the hour for yourself

The quickest way to judge an online literature tutor is to watch twenty minutes of a real lesson rather than read about one. Send the school, the year group, the component route if you know it, and this term's texts. If a specialist who has taught that combination has a slot you can use, we will set up a free first lesson with no card details taken. The session runs as a working hour, not an introduction, and your child should finish it with one named habit to change and an annotated text in their inbox.
