IB Chemistry Tutor in Dubai

An IB chemistry tutor in Dubai should leave a paper trail. Every session here ends with a marked script or a dated investigation draft, and the file is what a parent reads instead of being told that things are going well. Dubai families get a Chemistry specialist matched to Standard or Higher Level, working one-to-one on live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the mole diagnostic run first because that single calculation decides four later topics.

  • A marked script or dated draft after every session, sent the same evening
  • Mole fluency measured and re-measured, not assumed
  • Investigation feedback by criterion, with six marks named against each
  • One free 30-minute trial lesson per family, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What the record shows, and what it stops you believing

Chemistry is a subject in which a student can feel competent and score in the middle for two years, and the reason is that the feeling and the mark measure different things. Understanding why a reaction proceeds is pleasant and insufficient. Producing the correct quantity of product to three significant figures, from a balanced equation and a mass that needed converting first, is what the mark scheme pays for. A record of marked work is the only thing that distinguishes the two, which is why every session on this plan produces one.

The record is deliberately plain. A dated list of topics with a mark against each from a timed question, an annotated script showing where each lost mark went, and for the investigation a versioned draft so that the research question's narrowing is visible rather than asserted. Parents receive it the same evening. Nobody enjoys reading it and it answers the only question that matters: is this moving, and in which direction. It is also the only document in the file that a school will engage with seriously, because it is written in the school's own currency: a mark, against a question, from a published scheme. A parent arriving at a subject meeting with four dated scripts is having a different conversation from a parent arriving with a worry.

The first entry in the file is always the mole. Mole calculations carry into concentration and titration, into electrolysis and Faraday relationships, into enthalpy calculations per mole, into equilibrium expressions and into every yield question in organic chemistry. A student who is slow or unreliable on moles is losing marks across six topics for one reason, and that pattern is invisible in a report card and obvious in a marked script. Measuring it takes twenty minutes.

The second entry is command-term discipline. Chemistry mark schemes pay for specific verbs: state, describe, explain, deduce, justify, outline and distinguish each buy something different, and a student who answers everything as a description loses marks across both papers simultaneously. It looks like a chemistry problem and is a habit, and the record shows it because the same category of loss repeats week after week until the habit changes.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For a record-based plan that is an advantage: the annotated script, the marked calculation and the commented draft all exist as files rather than as paper that leaves the house, so March can be compared with October directly. A Dubai family in Mirdif or Dubai Hills also gets a Chemistry specialist at the right level rather than whichever science tutor is within a short drive.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry arrives in a Dubai Diploma classroom from several directions, and the record a student brings with them, or does not, determines what the first month of support is spent on.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

MYP Sciences, Years 4 and 5

Criterion-assessed science covering knowledge, inquiry and design, processing and evaluating, and reflection. Students arrive well prepared for the Diploma investigation and frequently light on calculation volume, because MYP assessment does not demand repeated quantitative work under time pressure.

In Dubai's full-continuum IB World Schools this is the standard route into Diploma chemistry, and the first marked timed paper is usually where the calculation gap appears. It is a gap in practice rather than in understanding, which is why it closes faster than families expect once it is measured.

IGCSEAges 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE Chemistry into Diploma chemistry

Cambridge 0620 or Edexcel 4CH1 leaves a student with solid qualitative chemistry and partial quantitative fluency. Moles appear at IGCSE but at a level that permits workarounds, and those workarounds fail at Diploma level where multi-step stoichiometry is routine rather than exceptional.

British-curriculum schools dominate Dubai enrolment, so many Diploma chemists arrive from IGCSE. The specific carry-over problem is a student who passed 0620 by learning reaction facts and avoiding calculation questions, a strategy that produced a good grade and no transferable fluency.

SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Chemistry Standard Level

Two written papers plus the internally assessed investigation at 20 per cent. Paper 1 combines multiple-choice with a data-based section; Paper 2 is extended response and carries the largest weighting. Required by some life-science and medical routes without Higher Level, and not a soft option.

Where a Dubai school teaches both levels together for part of the course, Standard Level students sometimes meet Higher Level material and conclude they are behind. Confirming which content is assessed at their own level is a short conversation with a real effect on both confidence and revision efficiency.

HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Chemistry Higher Level

The same structure with substantially more content and longer papers, extending organic chemistry, equilibrium, acid-base theory, energetics and electrochemistry. Expected by most medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering routes, which makes the level decision a university decision as well as an academic one.

Higher Level chemistry demand in this emirate concentrates among students targeting medicine, which means the same weeks of the final year see the same surge in requests. The record built in Diploma Year 1 is what makes the Year 13 plan short rather than exploratory.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry support is organised by topic for teaching and by component for marks. These are the units a plan is built from, with what the record typically shows about each.

Moles and stoichiometry

SL and HL

The load-bearing calculation of the entire subject. Mass to moles, moles to volume, limiting reagent, percentage yield and atom economy. A weakness here reappears in titration, electrolysis, energetics, equilibrium and organic yield questions, which is why it is the first entry in the record.

Bonding and structure

SL and HL, extended at HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces and molecular geometry. Marks go to explanations that name the specific force and relate it to the observed property, rather than to a correct general statement about strength.

Energetics and thermochemistry

SL and HL, extended at HL

Enthalpy changes, calorimetry, Hess's law and at Higher Level entropy and spontaneity. Every calculation is per mole, so the mole weakness surfaces here first. Sign conventions are the second most common loss in marked scripts.

Kinetics

SL and HL, extended at HL

Rate, collision theory and catalysis, with rate equations, orders and mechanisms at Higher Level. Graph interpretation is decisive: reading an initial rate from a tangent, determining an order from concentration data, and relating a mechanism to a rate-determining step.

Equilibrium

SL and HL, extended at HL

Dynamic equilibrium and Le Chatelier at both levels, with equilibrium constant calculations at Higher Level. The common script failure is predicting a shift correctly and then explaining it in terms of the constant changing, which it does not.

Acids, bases and redox

SL and HL, substantially extended at HL

Titration, pH, buffers at Higher Level, oxidation states, electrochemical cells and electrolysis. Two of the subject's most calculation-heavy areas sit here, and both run on mole work plus careful unit handling.

Organic chemistry

SL and HL, substantially extended at HL

Functional groups, reaction types and at Higher Level mechanisms, stereochemistry and synthetic routes. Students who learn reactions as isolated facts stall at Higher Level; the ones who hold reagent and condition together with the transformation can construct a route they have never seen.

Paper 1

SL and HL · 36 per cent

Multiple-choice plus a data-based section, with the data booklet available. The data section discriminates: reading a spectrum, using tabulated values correctly, and identifying what a plotted line actually represents. Drilling multiple-choice alone leaves it untouched.

Paper 2

SL and HL · 44 per cent

Extended response across the syllabus and the largest component in the course. This is where command-term discipline and multi-step calculation decide the grade, and where the weekly marked script does most of its work.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL · 20 per cent · 24 marks

An individual investigation with a 3,000-word ceiling, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each. In chemistry the usual failure is a question whose measurable output is qualitative, which leaves the data analysis criterion nothing to reward.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of work produce three different kinds of record, and a chemistry plan usually needs two of them running at once.

Weekly marked-script session

Sixty minutes a week built around a timed question sat between sessions and marked to the published scheme before the next. Twenty minutes reviewing the marked work, thirty teaching what it exposed, ten setting the next task. The annotated script and the updated topic record go to the parent the same evening.

  • 60 minutes, live video, one named component per slot
  • Timed question marked before the session, never during it
  • Each lost mark categorised: content, calculation, command term or timing
  • Topic record dated and versioned so movement is visible

Calculation fluency block

Thirty-minute sessions two or three times a week for a few weeks, on moles, concentration, limiting reagent, yield and unit conversion. Measured by timed sets of twenty items counted week to week. It contains no new chemistry and it routinely produces the largest single movement on Paper 2.

  • Short high-frequency sessions rather than one weekly hour
  • Timed sets of twenty items, counted and compared each week
  • No new content; fluency and accuracy only
  • The cheapest intervention available in the subject

Investigation drafting, versioned

Three or four sessions placed against the school's internal deadlines. Research question feasibility first, then uncertainty treatment, then a draft read against the four criteria with six marks named against each. The student designs, collects and writes every word; the tutor questions and marks, and every version is kept.

  • Question tested for a measurable, genuinely quantitative output
  • Uncertainty treatment taught before data collection, not reconstructed after
  • Four criteria named with six marks each in every piece of feedback
  • Version history retained, so the narrowing is part of the record

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB chemistry tutor in Dubai should leave behind

  • Three documents: annotated script, dated topic record, versioned draft
  • Comprehension and performance diverge in chemistry, and only marking catches it
  • Losses fall into recurring categories, so the record predicts the next month
  • Evidence replaces a tutor's summary as the parent's information source

An IB chemistry tutor in Dubai should be judged by the file, not by the session. A session can be enjoyable, well explained and entirely undirected. A file cannot: it either shows marks against dated topics moving in one direction or it does not. The three documents that make up the file are an annotated script per session, a topic record updated and dated each time, and for the investigation a versioned draft. Nothing else is required and nothing less is sufficient.

The reason this matters in chemistry specifically is the gap between comprehension and performance. Chemistry rewards explanation, and a student who can explain why an equilibrium shifts feels, correctly, that they understand the chemistry. The mark scheme asks them to calculate the new concentration to three significant figures having first converted a volume. Comprehension and performance diverge quietly, and only a marked script catches it.

The second reason is that chemistry failures are categorical rather than scattered. Marked scripts sort losses into a small number of recurring types: a mole conversion done late, a sign convention reversed, an explanation given where a deduction was asked, a significant-figure convention ignored, a graph read without units. Those categories repeat, which means the record predicts. After four weeks the file says what the next four weeks should contain without anyone guessing.

The third is the parent's position. A Dubai parent who was not in the room has three sources of information about their child's chemistry: the child, the school report, and a tutor's summary. The first two are compressed and the third is interested. An annotated script with a mark on it is none of those things, which is why it goes out the same evening rather than being described in a monthly call.

02

The chemistry record, week by week

A record only works if it is collected to a schedule, so here is the schedule. Week one is diagnostic and contains no teaching: a mole fluency set, a timed structured question on recently taught content, and a short unit-conversion set. Those three produce the baseline. Weeks two to five run the weekly cycle: a question sat between sessions, marked before the session, reviewed in the first twenty minutes. Week six is a comparison week, in which the week-one diagnostics are re-sat and the two results placed side by side.

The six-week cycle then repeats, which gives a Dubai family three or four comparison points across a Diploma year. That is enough to see a trend and few enough that the student is being taught rather than tested. Between the formal points the weekly marked question feeds the topic record continuously, so a topic that moves from amber to green has a date and a script behind it.

The investigation runs on a separate track with its own record, because its deadlines belong to the school rather than to the tutoring plan. Each session on it produces a commented version of the student's own document, and the versions are kept. A research question that started broad and ended answerable has a visible history, and that history is itself evidence that the thinking was the student's.

The table below is the schedule as used. Dubai school calendars differ, and the comparison weeks are better placed just after a long break than just before one, because a re-sat diagnostic after the December break measures retention rather than recency and retention is the more useful number.

THE CHEMISTRY RECORD: WHAT IS COLLECTED, WHEN, AND WHAT IT PROVES
Point in the cycleWhat is collectedWhat it provesWhat changes as a result
Week 1, baselineMole fluency set, timed structured question, unit-conversion setWhether the problem is content, calculation fluency or techniqueWhether the plan starts with drilling or with Diploma content
Weeks 2-5, weekly cycleOne timed question a week, marked before the sessionWhich loss categories repeat rather than occur onceThe topic taught in the following session
Week 6, comparisonWeek 1 diagnostics re-sat and placed alongside the originalsMovement, measured against the same instrumentFrequency raised, held or reduced for the next cycle
After a long breakRetention check on content taught before the breakWhether material was learned or only recently metWhether revision cycling needs building into the plan
Investigation trackA commented version of the student's own draft per sessionThat the narrowing and the analysis are the student's own workThe next drafting step, named against a criterion
03

The mole is the first thing the record measures

  • Moles carry into concentration, titration, electrolysis, energetics, equilibrium and yield
  • Twenty timed items, scored and timed, separates slow from inaccurate
  • Short frequent drilling, no new chemistry, bought at the lower market band
  • Re-measured at four weeks, with both scores kept in the file

Mole calculations are the load-bearing arithmetic of Diploma chemistry, and a weakness in them is not contained. Concentration and titration run on moles. Electrolysis and Faraday relationships run on moles. Enthalpy changes are quoted per mole. Equilibrium expressions are built from concentrations derived from moles. Percentage yield and atom economy in organic chemistry are mole ratios. A student unreliable on the conversion is losing marks in six topics for one reason, and in a report card that appears as general weakness in chemistry.

The diagnostic is twenty items, timed, with no context: mass to moles and back, concentration to moles given a volume in the wrong unit, limiting reagent in a two-reactant equation, moles of gas at a stated condition, and percentage yield from an actual and theoretical mass. Count the correct answers and record the time. A student who is accurate but slow has a different problem from one who is fast and wrong, and the two need different interventions.

The intervention for slowness is frequency rather than duration: thirty-minute sessions two or three times a week, twenty items each, counted and compared. It contains no new chemistry, which has a useful consequence for a Dubai family's budget — this work does not require a specialist rate, because the content is not Diploma-specific. Buying it at the specialist band is a waste, and buying Diploma content teaching before fixing it is a larger one.

The re-measurement is the part that makes it a record rather than an exercise. The same twenty items, re-sat four weeks later, with both scores in the file. Movement on that number is the most reliable predictor of movement on Paper 2 that this subject offers, and it is available for an outlay that sits at the bottom of the published market range rather than the top.

04

Organic chemistry: facts against routes

Organic chemistry is where a Dubai Diploma student's method of learning becomes visible. Students who learned IGCSE chemistry as a set of reaction facts can usually recall that an alcohol oxidises to a carboxylic acid. Asked to construct a three-step route from an alkene to an ester, they stall, because the route requires holding reagent, condition and transformation together rather than recalling a pair.

The fix is structural and it shows up in the record quickly. Build the reaction set as a table rather than a list: starting functional group, reagent, condition, product, and the transformation type. Once the same information is organised by transformation, a student can read a route backwards from the target, which is how synthesis questions are actually answered. At Higher Level the mechanism layer sits on top of the same organisation, and students who built the table first find mechanisms considerably easier than students who learned reactions as isolated facts.

The second organic failure is notation. Marks go for structures drawn with the correct number of bonds, for naming that follows the convention rather than approximates it, and for mechanisms with arrows that start from the right place. Those are precision errors rather than understanding errors, they are visible on a marked script immediately, and they repeat until someone enforces them in marking. A student losing two marks a paper to arrow placement is losing a grade boundary's worth across the course.

The third is stereochemistry at Higher Level, where the common loss is describing a relationship correctly in words and failing to represent it. Drawing practice is unglamorous, it is the thing students most readily skip in favour of reading, and it is the only thing that moves the mark. The record makes skipping it visible, because the same category of loss keeps appearing in the weekly script.

ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ORGANISED BY TRANSFORMATION RATHER THAN BY FACT
TransformationWhat has to be held togetherWhere the mark is lostWhat the record shows
Alcohol to carbonyl or carboxylic acidOxidising agent, condition, and which product the condition selectsProduct named without reference to the condition that determined itRepeat losses on condition-dependent products across several scripts
Alkene to alcohol or halogenoalkaneReagent, mechanism type, and regiochemistry where it appliesMechanism arrows starting from the wrong speciesPrecision errors recurring in every mechanism question
Halogenoalkane substitutionNucleophile, mechanism pathway, and the effect of substrate classPathway asserted without reference to substrate structureDeduce questions answered as descriptions
Carboxylic acid to esterBoth reactants, the catalyst, and the reversibilityCatalyst omitted; equilibrium nature of the step ignoredYield questions answered without accounting for equilibrium
Multi-step synthetic routeThe whole table, read backwards from the targetThe student stalls because reactions were learned as pairsA clear split between fact-learners and table-builders
05

The investigation, drafted on the record

The internally assessed investigation carries 20 per cent of the chemistry grade, has a 3,000-word ceiling, and is marked out of 24 across four criteria at six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. A fifth of the grade is awarded for work done without time pressure, which makes it the most recoverable portion of the course and the portion most often left until the term when every other Diploma deadline arrives.

In chemistry the dominant design failure is a research question whose output is qualitative. A colour change observed, a precipitate formed, a reaction that went faster — none of those gives the data analysis criterion anything to reward. The question has to produce numbers, enough of them, across enough values of a genuinely variable independent quantity. Testing that before any apparatus is booked is the single highest-value hour in the process, and it is also the hour that most often results in the question being rewritten.

Uncertainty is the second. Chemistry investigations involve measuring instruments with stated uncertainties, and the data analysis and evaluation criteria both depend on those uncertainties being recorded during collection, propagated through the calculation, and then used to say something specific about the reliability of the conclusion. Reconstructed afterwards it is obvious, and it reads as the afterthought it was. Taught before collection it is straightforward.

The boundary is firm, and stating it protects the student. A tutor may teach experimental design, question whether a question can generate usable data, teach uncertainty treatment, name the criteria and their marks, and give written feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the experiment, supply data, or write any part of the report. Work that is not the student's own produces a malpractice finding against the student rather than against whoever sold it. One UAE-facing site advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, which is the clearest example in this market of a thing to refuse.

06

Higher and Standard Level chemistry, decided from the file

Both levels share the component structure and the four investigation criteria. Higher Level adds substantial content, concentrated in organic chemistry, equilibrium constants, acid-base theory including buffers, energetics including entropy and spontaneity, and electrochemistry. Papers are longer. The additions are calculation-heavier than the shared content, which is why the mole and fluency record predicts Higher Level success better than any report grade.

The level conversation should therefore be read off the file rather than discussed in the abstract. Losses concentrated in two or three named topics indicate content, and content responds to teaching across eighteen months. Losses spread evenly across every topic and question type, with the calculation fluency score flat across two comparison points, indicate that the level is the issue. That is an uncomfortable reading and it is better delivered in the first term of Diploma Year 1 than in the second term of Year 13.

University requirements are the other input and they are published by the universities themselves. Most medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering routes expect Higher Level chemistry; some biological and environmental science courses accept Standard Level; a few state a chemistry requirement without specifying level. Reading the actual requirement for the actual courses on a student's list is an afternoon's work and it settles more of the decision than any amount of discussion.

One cheap and frequently overlooked check belongs here. Where a Dubai school teaches both levels in the same room for part of the course, confirm which content is assessed at the student's own level. Standard Level students who have sat through Higher Level buffer calculations and concluded they cannot do chemistry are commoner than they should be, and the remedy is a syllabus comparison rather than a term of tutoring.

WHAT HIGHER LEVEL CHEMISTRY ADDS, AND WHAT EACH ADDITION DEMANDS
Area extended at Higher LevelWhat is addedWhat it demands of the studentWhat the record should show first

07

Cost, regulation and the Dubai chemistry context

Published rates in this emirate, read in October 2026: Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200 an hour and IGCSE from AED 150, TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist work, and the Bestimate rate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, with premium named listings reaching AED 650 at BartyED. Budget online provision starts at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik. Chemistry is better supplied in this market than Higher Level physics, which usually places it mid-band rather than at the top.

A record-based plan has a useful cost property: it tells you when to stop. Where the comparison week shows the calculation score has risen and the weekly losses have moved from calculation to content, the drilling block ends. Where the topic record goes green across the board, the frequency drops. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240-600 at the budget tier, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work, and the point of the record is to spend as little time in the upper band as the evidence permits.

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects annually against six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak. The sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 offering 17 curricula, with seven new schools approved for the 2026-27 intake, three of them International Baccalaureate, adding 16,846 places. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in the emirate would not rise for 2026-27.

Three points of record. The mandatory subjects — Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral studies — are taught in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education prohibited. Private tutoring requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. And IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education or the International Baccalaureate, operates no UAE office, and references rather than reproduces IB syllabus material.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery means the record travels and the tutor does not. What the postcode changes is when a session can start and whether a timed paper can realistically be sat on a weekday evening.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Short commutes and apartment study space. Timed chemistry papers need a clear desk and ninety uninterrupted minutes, which in these buildings is easier at five in the afternoon than at eight in the evening.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

Several IB World Schools within a short radius and large chemistry cohorts, often with separate Standard and Higher Level groups. Internal rankings here say little about the paper itself, which is what makes an independently marked script useful.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Damac Hills

Long bus routes and heavy after-school commitments. Sessions run at 6.30pm or later, so the timed paper is set for a weekend morning and the session is spent on the marked version of it.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Established Diploma programmes with well-equipped laboratories, so chemistry investigations here are usually limited by the research question rather than by apparatus. Support is better spent on design and uncertainty than on logistics.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A high share of students arriving from IGCSE chemistry, typically strong on reaction facts and partial on stoichiometry. The mole diagnostic matters most in this cluster because the IGCSE grade frequently conceals the gap.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Short commutes make a 4.30pm chemistry slot realistic, which is the best time of day for calculation work. Families here often run a Diploma student and an IGCSE sibling in consecutive slots.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Dubai South

Newer Diploma provision with smaller chemistry cohorts and sometimes one teacher across both levels. With no parallel group to benchmark against, the external marked record is often the only independent data a family holds.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai IB schools with separate Higher Level chemistry groups

Mature Diploma programmes where Standard and Higher Level run as distinct teaching groups with established laboratory routines. Families here usually want an independent mark rather than teaching, particularly in the medicine-targeting cohort.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and the last marked paper

The useful opening message says Standard or Higher Level, names the topics currently taught, and attaches a photograph of the most recent marked paper. The script is the start of the record. Without it the first session is spent generating evidence the student has already produced once.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. It is spent on one structured question marked live against the published scheme, with the withheld mark explained. That shows the marking standard that will populate the record, which is the thing being bought.

  3. 03

    The three baseline diagnostics

A twenty-item mole fluency set, a timed structured question on taught content, and a short unit-conversion set. Scored and timed. Those three decide whether the plan opens with drilling at the lower band or with Diploma content at the specialist band, and that sequencing decision is usually worth more than the choice of tutor.

  4. 04

Weekly cycle, marked before the session

A timed question sat between sessions and marked to the published scheme before the next slot, so every session opens with current evidence. The annotated script and the dated topic record go to the parent the same evening, with each lost mark categorised rather than merely counted.

  5. 05

    Comparison week every six weeks

The baseline diagnostics are re-sat and the two results placed side by side. Movement on the same instrument is the only honest measure of progress. Where there has been none, the plan changes rather than continuing, and that conversation happens on the evidence.

  6. 06

    Investigation track, versioned separately

Sessions booked against the school's own deadlines, each producing a commented version of the student's own document. Versions are kept, so the narrowing of the research question and the development of the analysis are both part of the record rather than claims about it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The file, not the session, is the product

An annotated script, a dated topic record and a versioned draft after every session. A parent who was not in the room can read what happened, and progress becomes a comparison between two documents rather than an opinion about a term.

Moles measured before anything is taught

Twenty timed items in the first session, scored and timed, then re-sat at six weeks. Mole weakness costs marks across six topics simultaneously, and it is the one chemistry problem that can be fixed with cheap, short, frequent drilling rather than specialist teaching.

Losses categorised, not just counted

Every lost mark on every script is sorted into content, calculation, command term or timing. Three of those four categories move in weeks rather than months, which is why a mid-range chemistry mark is often cheaper to lift than it appears.

Organic taught as transformations

Reaction sets are built as tables organised by transformation rather than learned as pairs of facts, because that is what makes a synthetic route readable backwards from the target. Higher Level mechanisms then sit on an organisation that already exists.

Investigation criteria named with their marks

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each, named in every piece of feedback, with uncertainty taught before data collection rather than reconstructed afterwards. No competing page found in this market names a single criterion.

The record tells you when to stop

When the comparison week shows the fluency score has risen and losses have shifted to content, the drilling ends. When the topic record goes green, the frequency drops. A plan whose own evidence can end it is a different product from a rolling monthly subscription.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What should an IB chemistry tutor in Dubai actually hand over each week?+

Three things, and nothing else is required. An annotated script from the question sat that week, showing where each mark went and why. A dated topic record with a status against each topic taught so far. And, where the investigation is in progress, a commented version of the student's own draft. Those arrive the same evening as the session. The reason to insist on them is that they are comparable: October against March on the same instrument is evidence, while a monthly phone call describing progress is a report from an interested party.

Why do mole calculations matter so much in IB chemistry?+

Because the weakness is not contained to one topic. Concentration and titration run on moles. Electrolysis and Faraday relationships run on moles. Enthalpy changes are quoted per mole. Equilibrium expressions are built from concentrations derived from moles. Percentage yield and atom economy are mole ratios. A student who is slow or unreliable on the conversion loses marks across six topics for a single reason, and on a school report that appears as general weakness in chemistry. Twenty timed items with no context identify it in one session, and the fix is short frequent drilling rather than more chemistry teaching.

My child understands chemistry but the marks do not reflect it. What is happening?+

Comprehension and performance diverge in this subject, and the gap is measurable. Understanding why an equilibrium shifts is genuine knowledge; the mark scheme asks for the new concentration to three significant figures having first converted a volume. The usual loss categories in marked Dubai scripts are a mole conversion done late in a multi-step calculation, a sign convention reversed in energetics, an explanation written where a deduction was asked, and a significant-figure convention ignored. None of those is a gap in understanding, and all of them are visible on a script and invisible on a report card.

How does a Dubai student get better at organic chemistry?+

By reorganising it rather than revising it again. Students who learned chemistry as reaction facts can recall that an alcohol oxidises to a carboxylic acid and stall when asked to construct a three-step route to an ester. The fix is to build the reaction set as a table holding starting functional group, reagent, condition, product and transformation type together. Once organised that way, a route can be read backwards from the target, which is how synthesis questions are answered. At Higher Level the mechanism layer sits on the same organisation, and students who built the table find mechanisms notably easier.

What are the four criteria for the IB chemistry investigation?+

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each for a total of 24, with the component carrying 20 per cent of the subject grade and a 3,000-word ceiling. Research design rewards a focused question with a genuinely variable independent quantity and controlled variables. Data analysis rewards correct processing, graphing and uncertainty treatment. Conclusion rewards a reading of the results related to accepted chemistry. Evaluation rewards identifying which specific source of uncertainty dominated and how it propagated, rather than a generic list of improvements beginning with better equipment.

Why do chemistry investigation questions fail in Dubai schools?+

Most often because the output is qualitative. A colour change observed, a precipitate formed, a reaction that proceeded faster — none of those gives the data analysis criterion numbers to reward, which caps the piece however well it is written. The question has to produce measurements, enough of them, across enough values of a genuinely variable independent quantity. The second common failure is apparatus the school does not hold. Both are detectable in a single session before anything is booked, which is why feasibility work is the highest-value hour in the whole process.

How is progress in chemistry measured across a Diploma year?+

On the same instrument, repeatedly. The baseline is a twenty-item mole fluency set, a timed structured question and a unit-conversion set, all scored and timed in week one. Those are re-sat every six weeks and the results placed side by side. Between comparison points the weekly marked question feeds a dated topic record, so a topic moving from amber to green has a date and a script behind it. Four comparison points across a year is enough to see a trend and few enough that the student is being taught rather than examined.

Should the comparison test come before or after a school break?+

After, and this is more than a scheduling detail. A diagnostic re-sat just before Dubai's long December break measures recency: the material was taught last month and is still warm. The same diagnostic re-sat in the second week of January measures retention, which is the number that predicts examination performance. A student whose score holds across a break has learned the material; a student whose score falls has met it. Those two need different plans, and only the post-break measurement distinguishes them.

Does IB Chemistry Higher Level need more tutoring hours than Standard Level?+

Usually, and the reason is calculation volume rather than conceptual difficulty. Higher Level adds content concentrated in organic chemistry, equilibrium constants, acid-base theory including buffers, entropy and spontaneity, and electrochemistry, and those additions are calculation-heavier than the shared content. That is why the mole fluency record predicts Higher Level performance better than any report grade does. A Higher Level student with a flat fluency score across two comparison points needs the drilling block before the content teaching, and reversing that order is the most common way hours get spent without effect.

Is Standard Level chemistry enough for medicine applications?+

Read the requirement for the actual courses on the student's list, because it varies and it is published by each university rather than inferable. Most medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering routes expect Higher Level chemistry. Some biological, environmental and health-science courses accept Standard Level. A few state a chemistry requirement without naming a level. That afternoon of reading settles more of the level decision than any discussion, and it is the one input to the decision that cannot be revised after the fact. Tutoring is not a requirement for any admission process.

What do Dubai providers charge per hour for IB chemistry support?+

Published rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase quoting AED 270 for specialist work. The Bestimate survey places IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and premium named listings reach AED 650. Budget online provision starts at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik. Chemistry is better supplied in this emirate than Higher Level physics, which usually places it mid-band. Calculation drilling can sensibly be bought at the lower band, because the content is not Diploma-specific.

Can online chemistry tuition handle a subject with laboratory work?+

The laboratory work happens at school in either case, so the question is what support it needs. Investigation coaching is design, uncertainty treatment and draft review, all of which happen on documents, tables and graphs, and all of which are better on a shared screen where annotations are saved and versions kept. What online delivery cannot do is stand beside a student while they take a reading. What it can do is ensure the readings they plan to take will produce data the criteria can reward, which is where investigations are actually won or lost.

Is a home chemistry tutor in Dubai worth the extra cost?+

The published numbers put qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour in this market, with independent home tutors at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online, and the premium rises with distance from the central tutoring clusters. The premium is a commute. For a record-based chemistry plan there is also a practical argument: annotated scripts and commented drafts stay in a file that can be re-read in March, whereas work marked on paper at a kitchen table is gone by the following week. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

What may a tutor do with a chemistry investigation, and what may they not?+

A tutor may teach experimental design, question whether a research question can generate usable quantitative data, teach uncertainty treatment and propagation, name the four criteria and their six marks each, and give written feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not design the experiment, supply data, or write any part of the report. Work that is not the student's own produces a malpractice finding against the student rather than against the provider who sold it. One UAE-facing site advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, and the outcome at stake there is the Diploma itself.

What happens if no chemistry specialist is available at the level we need?+

You get told, with the options stated. Higher Level chemistry demand in this emirate concentrates among students targeting medicine, which means the same weeks of the final year see the same surge in requests. The honest choices are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. A general science tutor placed into Higher Level buffer calculations or Higher Level organic mechanisms is the thing to refuse. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Start the file with twenty mole questions

The first useful chemistry document is not a revision plan. It is twenty timed mole items, scored, dated and kept, alongside one timed structured question marked against the published scheme. Those two pages say whether the problem is calculation fluency, content or technique, and the three have different fixes at different costs. Send the level, the topics currently taught and the last marked paper, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and insist on the annotated script the same evening. If the fluency score comes back strong, the plan should be shorter and cheaper, and it will be.
