IB DP Extended Essay Online Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Extended Essay online tutor in Dubai is usually brought in to read a draft that nobody can quite diagnose. The essay is long, the student has worked hard, and the supervisor's comment was brief. This page works the other way round: it starts from the symptoms an examiner actually sees in a weak essay, names the criterion each one damages, and says what a single online hour can still change at each stage. Sessions run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Diagnosis by symptom: what the draft shows, what it costs
  • 34 marks across five criteria, with the heaviest one named
  • One-to-one over live video; IB Gram runs no UAE home visits
  • A free first hour that returns a written diagnosis of the draft

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Start from the symptom, not from the rubric

Most families looking for Extended Essay help in Dubai are holding a draft and a problem they cannot name. The student has put in real hours, the essay is the right length, the supervisor has written something short and encouraging, and a mock grade has come back lower than anyone expected. Reading the criteria at that point rarely helps, because criteria are written for examiners rather than for parents. What helps is working backwards from what the draft actually looks like on the page.

That diagnostic route works because weak Extended Essays fail in a small number of recognisable ways. The question is a topic rather than a question. The essay reports what sources say instead of arguing with them. The method is described once in the introduction and never again. The conclusion restates the introduction. The reflections read as administration. Each of those symptoms maps onto a specific criterion, and the mapping is stable enough that an experienced reader can usually identify the problem in the first two pages.

The marks make the stakes clear. The Extended Essay carries 34 marks across five criteria, lettered A to E, and they are not evenly weighted: critical thinking is the largest single block by a wide margin, which is why an essay that is well organised, correctly referenced and genuinely hard-working can still land in the lower bands. Confirm the current allocations against the Extended Essay guide your school's coordinator holds, since the rubric is revised periodically and a figure from an older cohort is worse than no figure at all.

What a session can do depends heavily on when it happens, and this page is explicit about that rather than optimistic. An hour spent on the research question in the first fortnight changes the ceiling of the whole essay. The same hour spent two weeks before a school's internal deadline cannot change the ceiling at all; it can lift presentation, tighten the argument's visible structure, and rescue the reflections, which is worth having and is not the same thing. Saying so costs billable hours and is the difference between help and reassurance.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the draft on screen and annotated while the student watches. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we run only in India. For a 4,000-word research essay that is the better arrangement anyway: the whole object of the work is a document, screen-sharing shows exactly which sentence is being questioned, and a Dubai family can choose a reader who knows their subject group rather than one who happens to live within a short drive of their community, which in a city this size is a meaningful difference.

At a glance

  • Five criteria, 34 marks, with critical thinking carrying the largest block
  • Diagnosis organised by what a draft looks like, not by rubric language
  • An honest statement of what an hour cannot fix at each stage
  • Six marks sitting in the reflections that most families never examine
  • Nothing written for the student: every word submitted is their own
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Extended Essay belongs to the Diploma core, but what a student brings to it was formed earlier. The programmes below set the research habits a Dubai student arrives with, and each note names the habit that causes trouble in a 4,000-word essay.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Every Diploma candidate submits one Extended Essay of up to 4,000 words on a self-chosen research question, registered in a subject and supervised by a member of school staff. It is externally assessed against five criteria and contributes, with Theory of Knowledge, to the core points on the Diploma. The three reflection sessions with the supervisor are part of the assessment rather than a formality.

Dubai schools set their own internal deadlines, usually well ahead of the IB upload, and those dates are the ones that govern a family's planning. Ask the coordinator for the internal schedule in writing at the start of DP1; the commonest cause of a rushed essay in this city is a family working to the wrong date.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP Personal Project trains a student to plan, document and reflect on an extended piece of independent work, which is the closest preparation the IB offers for the Extended Essay. Students who took it seriously arrive able to keep a process journal. The habit it does not build is argument: the Personal Project rewards process, and the Extended Essay rewards a contested claim defended with evidence.

Dubai has a large number of IB continuum schools, so a substantial share of Diploma candidates here have completed a Personal Project. Those students generally handle the reflections well and the critical thinking criterion badly, which is a useful thing to know before buying any hours at all.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

IGCSE rewards accurate recall and well-structured answers to questions somebody else has set. Nothing in it requires a student to design a question, select a method, or decide which sources deserve trust. That is the gap: students arriving from a British-curriculum Year 11 write fluent, organised essays that report rather than argue, and the critical thinking criterion is where the shortfall appears.

UK curriculum accounts for 37 per cent of enrolment across Dubai's private schools, making this the commonest starting point in the emirate. One hour spent in the first fortnight on what a research question must do saves a great deal later, because the question sets the ceiling for every criterion that follows.

COREAges 16-19 · Both DP years

Theory of Knowledge and CAS

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together determine the Diploma core points, and the two reward overlapping habits: a controlled claim, evidence handled honestly, limitations acknowledged. CAS competes for the same evenings without feeding the essay at all. Mapping all three against the school's internal deadlines is part of any sensible plan for DP2.

In Dubai schools the Extended Essay internal deadline and the heaviest internal assessment weeks frequently land in the same half-term, which is the February crunch families describe. The clash is visible in October and almost invisible once it has arrived.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An Extended Essay is registered in a subject, and the commonest failures differ sharply between them. The notes below name what tends to go wrong in each subject group as Dubai students actually attempt it, which is a better guide to subject choice than a list of popular topics.

Chemistry

HL and SL registration

Strong essays rest on data the student generated or sourced defensibly. The usual failure in Dubai schools is a question requiring laboratory conditions the school cannot supply, which produces a literature review wearing an experimental title and a weak method section.

Biology

HL and SL registration

Fieldwork and ethical constraints bite early. Essays fail when the question is answerable only with human subjects or protected sites, or when a small sample is treated as though it settles a question, which the critical thinking criterion punishes directly.

Physics

HL and SL registration

Questions are often either trivially answerable from textbooks or well beyond school apparatus. The marks sit in a question narrow enough to measure and an honest treatment of uncertainty, which students tend to leave as an appendix rather than as part of the argument.

Economics

HL and SL registration

A popular choice in Dubai and a frequent source of a descriptive essay. The failure is a question about an event rather than about an economic relationship, so the essay narrates a market and never applies theory as a tool of analysis.

Business Management

HL and SL registration

Access to a real organisation is the strength and the trap. Essays weaken when primary access replaces analysis and the result reads as a consultancy report, or when a single interview is presented as evidence for a general claim about a sector.

History

HL and SL registration

Source evaluation is the whole subject, and the commonest failure is a question too recent for a historical treatment or too broad to argue in 4,000 words. Strong essays narrow to a single contested interpretation and test it against sources that disagree.

Psychology

HL and SL registration

Widely chosen and heavily literature-based. The weakness is an essay that summarises studies in sequence without evaluating method, sample or inference; the criterion rewarding critical thinking is where that pattern loses the most marks.

English Literature

HL and SL registration

Needs a question about how a text works rather than about what it means. Essays stall when the student chooses a theme they admire and assembles agreement, producing appreciation rather than analysis and leaving the examiner nothing to be persuaded of.

World Studies

Interdisciplinary registration

An ambitious option requiring a genuine issue of global significance examined through two disciplines. It rewards the strongest students and exposes the weakest, because an essay that uses two subjects loosely scores worse than a focused single-subject essay would have.

Mathematics

HL and SL registration

Chosen less often and frequently misjudged. The essay must do mathematics rather than describe it, with the student's own working at its centre, and the commonest failure is an exposition of a known result with no personal investigation inside it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay support is bought in four shapes, each matched to a stage of the project. All run one-to-one over live video with the draft shared on screen, and each one states what is returned in writing.

Question clinic, first fortnight

A single hour spent attacking a proposed research question until it either survives or is replaced. The tutor tests whether it is answerable in 4,000 words, whether the evidence exists and can be reached from Dubai, and whether a reasonable person could disagree with the answer. The highest-leverage hour in the whole project.

  • One hour, early, before reading begins in earnest
  • Three candidate questions tested rather than one defended
  • A written note of the surviving question and its scope
  • An honest verdict when a subject choice is unworkable

Diagnostic read of a draft

One hour in which an existing draft is read as an examiner reads it and returned with a written diagnosis: the symptoms present, the criterion each one damages, and three prioritised changes ranked by marks at risk. Families use this when supervisor feedback has been brief or when a mock grade arrived unexplained.

  • Whole draft read before the session, not during it
  • Symptoms mapped to criteria in writing
  • Three changes ranked by marks at risk
  • A plain statement of what cannot now be fixed

Staged supervision block

Four to six hours spread across the project at the points where decisions are taken: question, method, first full draft, and the reflections. Deliberately not weekly, because the work between sessions is the student's own research and writing, and paying for company during it adds nothing.

  • Four to six hours across several months
  • Sessions placed at decisions, not on a weekly rhythm
  • A written record after each one
  • Nothing written for the student at any stage

Reflections and viva preparation

One or two hours on the part of the assessment families most often ignore: the three reflection sessions and the concluding interview with the supervisor. The reflections carry marks of their own and reward genuine evidence of a changing process, which cannot be manufactured the night before.

  • Reflection content shaped from the student's real process
  • Rehearsal of the questions a supervisor is likely to ask
  • Timeline checked against the school's internal dates
  • No text supplied for the student's submitted forms

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What goes wrong in an Extended Essay, and what it costs

An IB DP Extended Essay online tutor in Dubai spends most of the first hour on diagnosis, because the symptoms in a draft are more informative than anything the student can say about it. A student rarely knows what is wrong with their own essay; they know it took a long time. An experienced reader looks for a short list of patterns and usually finds one of them inside two pages. The table below sets out the five that recur, the criterion each damages, and what a single hour does about it.

The most expensive of them is the first: a research question that is really a topic. The Impact of Social Media on Teenagers is a subject area, not a question, and an essay built on it can only survey. Because the question governs focus, method, the depth of knowledge a student can demonstrate and the amount of genuine argument available, a weak question suppresses four of the five criteria simultaneously. It is also the cheapest fault to fix in week one and the most expensive in month six.

The second most common is an essay that reports its sources. Students in Dubai schools are generally well trained in research and badly trained in disagreement, so the draft politely summarises five authors in sequence and concludes that the matter is complex. The criterion rewarding critical thinking carries the largest single block of marks on the whole essay, and it specifically rewards weighing evidence, identifying limitations and taking a defended position. A summary, however thorough, cannot score there.

Read the table as a triage tool rather than as a rubric. Identify the symptom, see which criterion it damages, then decide whether there is time to address the cause or only the consequence. That decision is the real content of a first session, and a tutor who tells a family in March that the question can still be rebuilt is being kind rather than useful.

02

The research question sets the ceiling before any research happens

Three tests decide whether a research question will carry an Extended Essay, and all three can be applied in ten minutes. Is it answerable in 4,000 words, or would a competent answer need a book? Does the evidence exist, and can a student in Dubai actually reach it? Could a reasonable, informed person disagree with the answer? A question that fails any of the three will cap the essay regardless of how much work follows, and students fail them in predictable ways.

The first failure is scale. Students choose questions that span a century, a country or an entire literature, because breadth feels safe and specificity feels risky. The opposite is true. An essay examining one measurable relationship in one defined context has room to establish method, present evidence and argue; an essay surveying a field has room only to introduce it. Narrowing is the single most common instruction a good supervisor gives and the one students resist hardest.

The second is access. A Dubai student can reach a great deal — university libraries in Academic City, organisations in Business Bay, practitioners in Al Quoz — and cannot reach some things at all. A question requiring a controlled laboratory environment a school does not have, or human subjects who cannot ethically be used, or archive material held in another country, is unworkable however interesting. Testing access before the reading starts is an hour that saves a month.

The third is arguability. If the answer is already settled in every source the student will read, there is nothing to think critically about and the heaviest criterion is closed off. This is why the strongest essays often look narrow and slightly awkward: they sit at a point where the evidence genuinely pulls in two directions. Students need permission to choose a question like that, and that permission is most of what the first session provides.

03

Where the marks actually go missing, by subject group

The five criteria are the same in every subject, but the way students lose marks against them is strongly subject-specific, and knowing the pattern in advance is worth more than a generic checklist. The table below records what tends to go wrong in the subjects Dubai students choose most, what the examiner is looking for instead, and what remains fixable late, which is the column families need in February.

Science essays fail disproportionately on access rather than on ability. A question assuming apparatus or sample sizes a school cannot provide turns into a literature review with an experimental title, and the method criterion suffers accordingly. The honest move, taken early, is to choose a question answerable with available means; taken late, the only remaining option is to present the limits of the method explicitly and argue within them, which recovers something rather than nothing.

Humanities essays fail on scope and on the absence of disagreement. Economics questions about an event rather than a relationship produce narrative; History questions about a period rather than a contested interpretation produce survey; Psychology essays assemble studies without evaluating method or sample. All three are versions of the same fault, and all three are partially recoverable late, because reorganising existing material around a contested claim can be done inside a fortnight.

World Studies deserves a separate warning. It asks for a genuine issue of global significance examined through two disciplines, and it rewards ambitious students handsomely. It also punishes loose execution harder than any single-subject registration, because an essay using two subjects superficially scores below the focused single-subject essay the student could have written instead. Choose it on the strength of the question, not on the appeal of the label.

04

The reflections and the supervisor: marks most families never look at

Three reflection sessions with the supervisor are built into the Extended Essay process, and the student's written record of them is assessed. Families consistently treat this as paperwork, and students consistently fill it in retrospectively in one sitting shortly before submission. Both are mistakes, because the criterion rewarding engagement looks for evidence of a process that genuinely changed: a question narrowed, a method abandoned, a source that forced a rethink.

Retrospective reflections are easy to spot and hard to fake. They describe a smooth project in which everything went to plan, because that is what hindsight produces, and the examiner reads a student who did not encounter difficulty as a student who did not engage. A student who records, in the moment, that their first three sources all agreed and that they went looking for opposition has handed the examiner exactly the evidence the criterion asks for.

The supervisor's role is bounded in ways families should understand. A supervisor guides, holds the reflection sessions, confirms authenticity and comments on the work within the limits the Extended Essay guide sets; the amount of permitted comment on a draft is defined and is smaller than most students expect. That boundary is a reason to use an external reader, not a complaint about schools: a supervisor who cannot annotate a whole draft is following the rules, and a family who understands that stops interpreting brief feedback as indifference.

The concluding interview at the end of the process is also worth preparing for, in the narrow sense of being able to talk about one's own work. A student who can say what they would do differently, which source they trusted least and why, and where the argument is weakest is demonstrating engagement and authenticity at once. Rehearsing those answers is legitimate; supplying them is not, and the difference is visible to anybody who has sat through both.

05

The 4,000 words, and structural faults that look like style

The essay itself is limited to 4,000 words, and examiners are not required to read beyond it. What counts towards that total and what sits outside it is defined in the Extended Essay guide and includes rules on the abstract, contents, references, appendices and material in tables, so check the current version with your school's coordinator rather than relying on a figure circulating online. The practical consequence is simple: an essay 1,200 words over the limit is not a long essay, it is an essay whose last section may never be read.

Several faults that students experience as writing problems are really structural, and they are worth separating because the fixes differ. An essay that feels repetitive usually has no argumentative sequence, so each section restates the thesis instead of advancing it. An essay that feels thin usually has a question too broad for the available space. An essay that feels disorganised often has the method buried in the middle rather than established early and applied throughout.

Appendices are the commonest place a good essay quietly loses marks. Students move material there when the word count tightens, including analysis the argument depends on. Examiners are not obliged to treat appendix material as part of the argument, so an essay whose reasoning lives in Appendix C has hidden its best work. If something is load-bearing, it belongs inside the 4,000 words, and something else has to go.

Presentation carries its own marks, and they are the easiest on the paper to secure. Consistent referencing in one recognised style, a readable contents page, figures labelled and referred to in the text, and a reference list matching the citations is a checklist rather than a skill. It is also the part of the essay most often left to the final evening in Dubai schools, where the internal deadline and the heaviest internal assessment weeks tend to collide.

06

What one session can fix, stage by stage

The honest answer to what an hour achieves depends entirely on when the hour happens, and the table below sets that out explicitly, including the column saying what the hour cannot do. Families deciding whether to buy support in February deserve that column more than they deserve encouragement, and providers paid by the hour have no reason to supply it.

Early sessions change ceilings. A question clinic in the first fortnight can replace an unworkable question with a workable one, which raises the maximum mark available on four criteria at once. A method session before data collection can prevent an essay that cannot answer its own question. Neither of these can be recreated later: by the time a full draft exists, the question and the method are sunk costs and the work shifts to extracting the best available mark from what the student has.

Late sessions change execution. A diagnostic read two weeks before an internal deadline can reorganise an argument around a contested claim, rewrite a conclusion from the evidence actually presented, rescue reflections that were going to be filled in retrospectively, and tidy presentation to secure the marks that are simply there for the taking. That is a real improvement and it is not the same as a different essay. Describing it accurately is the point.

There is one stage where the right advice is to buy nothing. The middle months, after the question is settled and before a full draft exists, are reading, data collection and writing, and all of it is the student's own work. A weekly paid hour through that period produces conversation and a slightly guilty student. Checkpoints at decisions, with silence in between, consistently produce better essays for less money.

07

Academic honesty, the one thing a tutor must never touch

The Extended Essay is where academic honesty is tested hardest, because it is long, it is done largely out of sight, and the market contains people willing to sell a finished document. One provider researched for this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright. Under IB rules the consequence of submitting work that is not the student's own falls on the student, and it can reach the loss of the Diploma. No price makes that a reasonable trade.

The boundary for a tutor is narrow and entirely workable. A tutor may read, diagnose, question, explain a criterion, model a move on a different example, challenge a claim, and record what was discussed. A tutor may not put sentences into the student's document, choose the question on the student's behalf, restructure the text themselves, or supply the content of a reflection. Everything a school uploads must be written by the student, and a dated sequence of the student's own drafts is the simplest possible evidence that it was.

Two further restraints are worth stating plainly because competitors breach them. Past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge or Pearson; a legitimate provider cites and links them rather than distributing copies. And no tutoring provider should attach the name of a regulator — KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education — or of an examination board to language about approval, accreditation or authorisation unless it holds that permit and can show the number. IB Gram holds none and implies none.

Families should also know who may lawfully teach their child. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, any amount quoted to you is unverified. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules additionally bar school staff from paid tutoring of students at their own school.

08

Dubai practicalities: data access, the calendar, and what the market charges

Dubai is a good city in which to research an Extended Essay, provided the question is chosen to suit it. University libraries in Academic City, a dense commercial sector within reach for Business and Economics questions, an arts district with working practitioners, and a school system of real scale — 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, according to the Dubai Media Office — all give a student material that does not exist in a textbook. What Dubai does not reliably give is specialised laboratory capacity in a school, which is why science questions need an access check early.

The calendar matters as much as the resources. Dubai school internal deadlines sit well ahead of the IB upload, Ramadan shortens the school day and shifts the household rhythm, and a large share of families travel for several weeks in summer. The summer between DP1 and DP2 is therefore both the best uninterrupted research window a student will get and the period when any arrangement depending on physical attendance collapses. Online delivery survives it, and sessions move to post-Iftar slots during Ramadan on request.

This page does not publish an IB examination or results date. The IB's own site cannot be verified by automated checking, and an unconfirmed date on a page used for planning is worse than none; UAE schools sit the May session and your coordinator holds the current timetable and the internal deadlines that actually bind. Where dates are published and sourced, they show why early entry matters in every system. Cambridge examines UAE candidates in a June series and a November series, with entries for the June papers closing in the spring, months before the first one; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, and its November 2026 timetable ended 19 November 2026. The Extended Essay sits under the same logic even though it is not an examination: the deadline that binds is the school's internal one, it falls long before anything is sat, and it is set once and not renegotiated.

On cost, published Dubai market rates are wide and worth knowing before any conversation. Budget online platforms advertise from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. Qualified online subject tutors sit around AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists run from about AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table showing AED 200 to AED 450 or more. In-home visits, where travel is inside the rate, run roughly AED 180 to AED 500, and premium named tutoring reaches AED 650, as BartyED publishes. Those are other providers' figures read in October 2026, not our price list. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE at all: Dubai sessions are one-to-one over live video, and the first diagnostic hour is free with no card required.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

What constrains an Extended Essay in Dubai is practical: access to data, access to a library or laboratory, and the hours in an evening once the commute is paid for. The notes below record what actually shapes essay work in each area.

Dubai Academic City

University campuses nearby, which matters for essays needing journal access or a subject expert to approach politely. Students here have an advantage in Economics and Psychology questions that depend on literature a school library will not hold.

Business Bay

Dense commercial district with real organisations within reach, which suits Business Management and Economics essays built on primary access. The risk is an essay that becomes a report about one company, so the analytical frame has to be fixed before any interview is arranged.

Dubai Marina

Apartment living with little quiet space and long evenings of extracurricular commitments. The practical constraint on essay work here is uninterrupted writing time rather than resources, which makes weekend blocks more productive than weekday hours.

Al Barsha

Several large IB schools within a few kilometres, with varying laboratory and library provision. Families here are the most likely to discover mid-project that the school cannot supply the apparatus a science question assumes, which is a question problem rather than a school problem.

Jumeirah

Close to the oldest selective schools, where supervision tends to be well organised and internal deadlines are enforced. Essays from this area more often fail on an over-ambitious question than on a missed deadline, which is a different and more expensive failure.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer schools and families often funding two subjects at once. The useful intervention here is early and cheap: one hour on the research question in the first fortnight, rather than a block of hours once a draft exists.

Mirdif

Long school runs compress the evening, so essay work concentrates into weekends and holidays. Students here benefit most from a planning hour that puts the research question and the data collection ahead of the reading, because reading expands to fill whatever time exists.

Al Quoz and Alserkal Avenue

The city's arts and independent-studio district, which gives Visual Arts, Theatre and some World Studies essays access to practitioners and live work. Primary observation is genuinely available here and it strengthens exactly the criterion most essays are weak on.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Sufouh, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established selective schools with structured supervision and firm internal deadlines. Students here usually arrive with a workable schedule and an over-ambitious question, so the useful hour goes on narrowing scope rather than on scheduling.

Big year groups, long commutes and proximity to university libraries. Essay work here concentrates into weekends, and the commonest avoidable loss is a strong draft undermined by reflections written in a single sitting the night before submission.

Schools are named as context for the Dubai IB ecosystem that students we support attend; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any school or school group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the draft and the internal deadline

Share whatever exists — a question, a plan, a part-draft or a full one — along with the subject of registration and the school's internal deadline rather than the IB date. Those two facts decide what is still possible, and most families send the second one wrongly because nobody told them the dates differ.

  2. 02

    The free diagnostic hour

One hour, online and one-to-one, with no card required. The draft is read beforehand and returned with a written diagnosis: the symptoms present, the criterion each damages, and three changes ranked by marks at risk. If the honest finding is that the supervisor has it in hand, the document says so.

  3. 03

Decide between ceiling work and execution work

Early in the project the question and method can still be changed, which lifts the maximum mark available. Late in the project they cannot, and the work is extracting the best mark from what exists. The plan names which of the two you are buying, because conflating them is how families end up disappointed.

  4. 04

Checkpoints at decisions, silence in between

Sessions are placed at the question, the method, the first full draft and the reflections, not weekly. The reading, the data collection and the writing between them are the student's own work, and paying for company during that stretch adds cost without adding marks.

  5. 05

A final pass on the marks simply available

One hour before submission on referencing consistency, figure labelling, appendix placement and whether the reflections evidence a real process. These are the cheapest marks on the paper and the ones most often lost in the week when internal assessment deadlines collide with the essay.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis before advice

The first hour produces a written statement of what the draft shows, which criterion each symptom damages, and three changes ranked by marks at risk. A family can act on that document with or without us, and several do exactly that, which is a reasonable outcome rather than a lost sale.

An explicit account of what cannot be fixed

A question set too broadly caps the essay, and in February no amount of paid time changes it. We say so and work on what remains available instead. Encouragement at that stage is the most expensive product in this market, because it costs the hours and delivers nothing.

Sessions at decisions, not on a timetable

Four to six hours placed at the question, the method, the first draft and the reflections consistently outperforms a weekly arrangement across the same project, and costs less. The middle months are reading and writing the student must do alone, and we recommend buying nothing during them.

The honesty line is the service

A tutor reads, questions, diagnoses, models and records. Nothing goes into the student's document that the student did not write. Finished coursework is sold in this market, and under IB rules the consequence of submitting it falls on the candidate, up to the loss of the Diploma.

Subject-group readers, selected online

A Chemistry essay and a World Studies essay fail in different ways, and a reader who knows the subject group spots the pattern in two pages. Online delivery means a Dubai family selects on that rather than on proximity, which is the whole practical argument for the format in a document-based component.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED figure here names the provider and the month it was read, including the in-home bands we do not operate in. Three of the six competitors researched for this market publish no price at all, so a parent is usually comparing a single unexplained number against nothing.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is the first thing an examiner notices about a weak Extended Essay?+

The title. If it names a topic rather than asking a question, the examiner already knows the essay will survey rather than argue, and the focus criterion is compromised before the first page. The second thing is whether the introduction states a method and the body then uses it; essays that assert a method once and never return to it read as unplanned. Both are visible in two pages, which is why a diagnostic read is quick and why the first fortnight of the project is worth more attention than the last.

Our daughter's research question is really a topic. How is that fixed?+

By testing candidate questions against three requirements rather than defending the existing one. Is it answerable in 4,000 words? Does the evidence exist and can she reach it from Dubai? Could an informed person disagree with the answer? Usually two or three narrower questions emerge from the same topic and one of them survives all three tests. Done in the first fortnight this takes an hour and raises the ceiling on four criteria. Done once a full draft exists, the question is a sunk cost and only the framing of the argument can change.

Which criterion do Dubai students lose most marks on?+

Critical thinking, by a clear margin, and it carries the largest block of marks on the essay. Students here are generally well trained in research and poorly trained in disagreement, so a draft summarises several authors competently and concludes that the issue is complex. The criterion rewards weighing evidence, naming limitations and taking a defended position. Converting two summary sections into evaluation is the single highest-value late intervention available. Confirm the current mark allocations with your school's Extended Essay coordinator, since the guide is revised from time to time.

Can an online session really change a 4,000-word essay in one hour?+

It can change a specific thing, and the honest version names which. An hour early in the project can replace an unworkable research question, which lifts the maximum mark available across several criteria. An hour on a complete draft can reorganise the argument around a contested claim, rewrite a conclusion from the evidence actually presented, and move load-bearing material out of an appendix. What an hour cannot do late is raise a ceiling the question has already set. Any provider who implies otherwise is selling reassurance.

My son's essay reads like a summary of his sources. What is missing?+

Disagreement. A summary essay treats sources as a body of knowledge to be relayed; an argumentative essay treats them as witnesses to be cross-examined. The fix is structural rather than stylistic: identify a point where two credible sources pull in different directions, build a body section around weighing them, and state what the student concludes and why. Two sections rebuilt this way usually move more marks than a full rewrite, because the heaviest criterion rewards exactly that move and currently has nothing to score.

Is a Chemistry Extended Essay realistic if our school limits laboratory access?+

Only if the question is chosen to fit what is available, and that decision belongs at the start. A question assuming apparatus or controlled conditions the school cannot supply produces a literature review with an experimental title, and the method criterion suffers accordingly. Workable alternatives include questions answerable with simple apparatus, with secondary datasets handled rigorously, or with a computational approach. If the draft already exists and the access was never there, the remaining move is to state the method's limits explicitly and argue inside them.

What does an examiner mean by critical engagement with sources?+

That the student has judged the sources rather than collected them. Concretely: noting who produced a piece of evidence and why that matters, identifying what a study's sample or method does not support, preferring one account over another with a stated reason, and acknowledging what the essay's own evidence cannot settle. It is a habit rather than a section, and it should appear throughout the body. An essay that confines evaluation to a paragraph near the end has demonstrated awareness of the requirement rather than the requirement itself.

Our school's internal deadline has passed and the essay is unfinished. What now?+

Speak to the Extended Essay coordinator first, today, because internal deadlines and the school's own submission arrangements are theirs to manage and they will have seen this before. Then triage what exists: secure the presentation marks, rewrite the conclusion from the evidence actually present, convert one summary section into evaluation, and make sure the reflections record the real process including the difficulty. A late essay that argues something is worth considerably more than a complete essay that surveys, and that is where the remaining hours should go.

How many sources should an Extended Essay use?+

There is no required number, and chasing one is a common way to weaken an essay. What matters is whether the sources are appropriate to the question, handled critically, and genuinely used rather than listed. Twelve sources evaluated carefully will outscore forty summarised. In the sciences and mathematics the balance shifts towards the student's own data and working, where the essay must show investigation rather than exposition. Reference consistently in one recognised style and ensure every citation appears in the reference list; those are marks available for simple care.

Must the Extended Essay be registered in a subject my child already studies?+

Schools normally require registration in a subject the student takes, and some permit exceptions, so this is a question for the Extended Essay coordinator rather than for a tutor. What is reliably true is that an essay in an unfamiliar subject carries real risk: the student has to acquire the discipline's conventions, its standards of evidence and its way of arguing while also doing the research. Where the subject is available to them, choosing it on the strength of a good question is a safer basis than the appeal of an unusual registration.

Why do strong students lose marks in the reflections?+

Because they write them retrospectively, in one sitting, and hindsight produces a smooth account of a project that went to plan. The criterion rewarding engagement looks for evidence of a process that genuinely changed: a question narrowed, a method abandoned, a source that forced a rethink. A student who records in the moment that their first three sources all agreed, and that they then went looking for opposition, has supplied exactly what the examiner wants. Keeping brief dated notes throughout costs nothing and is difficult to reconstruct afterwards.

Can a tutor tell us what grade the essay will get?+

No, and a provider who does is describing something nobody can deliver. An external examiner applies the criteria to the final submission, grade boundaries are set by the IB, and the essay forms part of the Diploma core alongside Theory of Knowledge. What an experienced reader can give is a judgement about where a draft currently sits against each criterion and which changes would move it, stated as a diagnosis rather than a prediction. Treat any promise of a particular grade, points total or improvement as a reason for scepticism rather than confidence.

What should my child have ready for a first Extended Essay session?+

Four things. The current question or title exactly as written. Whatever draft or plan exists, however rough and in whatever state. Any written comment the supervisor has given, because the permitted scope of that comment is limited and knowing what was said avoids repeating it. And the school's internal deadline, not the IB date. With those four the hour goes entirely on diagnosis, and a written statement of position comes back the same day rather than after a second session spent gathering context.

Does an Extended Essay tutor need to know my child's subject?+

For diagnosis, subject-group familiarity matters a great deal, because the failures are subject-specific: a Physics essay fails differently from a History essay and the fix is different too. For the generic marks — argument sequence, conclusion, referencing, appendix placement, reflections — a strong research-writing reader can work across subjects. Ask directly which subject groups a tutor has supervised or examined. Paying a specialist rate for someone meeting the discipline's conventions for the first time alongside your child is a poor trade and it happens in this market.

Can an Extended Essay tutor meet my child in person somewhere in Dubai?+

Not through IB Gram. We do not arrange in-person tutoring anywhere in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we offer only in India. Dubai Extended Essay support is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the draft shared on screen and annotated while the student watches. For a component whose entire output is a document that is the stronger arrangement: the family chooses a reader who knows the subject group rather than one who lives nearby, and the arrangement survives summer travel.

Send the draft, get the diagnosis

If your child's Extended Essay has come back with a grade nobody can explain, or a supervisor comment too brief to act on, the first step costs nothing. Send the question, whatever draft exists and the school's internal deadline, and take the free diagnostic hour. You will receive a written statement of what the draft shows, which criterion each symptom damages, and three changes ranked by the marks they put at risk — including an honest note on anything the question has already made impossible. Act on it with us or without us; several families do exactly that and book nothing further.
