IB Chemistry Tutor in DAMAC Hills

An IB chemistry tutor in DAMAC Hills earns their place by knowing what the paper pays for. This page works through the subject itself: the three calculation families that carry the numerical marks, the conventions in bonding and energetics, what an equilibrium question really asks, and the curly-arrow rules that decide mechanism marks. IB Gram teaches DAMAC Hills students live online, one to one, in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in DAMAC Hills

What the chemistry paper actually pays for

Chemistry rewards a surprisingly small number of specific behaviours, and most students have never had them named. The mark scheme pays for the structure of a calculation as much as for its answer. It pays for the intermolecular force being overcome rather than the bond type present. It pays for a trend being explained with nuclear charge and shielding rather than asserted. It pays for curly arrows that start from a lone pair or a bond rather than from an atom.

None of those is difficult and all of them are invisible to a student working from a textbook. A textbook explains chemistry. A mark scheme states what earns a mark, and the gap between the two is where most of a capable student's missing marks sit. A tutor who works from the second document behaves differently from one who works through chapters, and the difference shows in the first session.

The quantitative side is the clearest example. Three calculation families carry most of the numerical marks in the course: moles from mass using molar mass, moles from concentration and volume, and limiting reagent or percentage yield work. Each has a layout the scheme rewards — the relationship written, the substitution shown with units, one rounding at the end — and students who compute confidently in their heads lose marks they have earned.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition live, one to one and online over video in Gulf Standard Time. No tutor is sent to a DAMAC Hills address, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For chemistry the shared screen is a genuine advantage: calculation layout is what the scheme pays for, and a tutor can watch the working appear line by line and stop at the step where it broke rather than after the answer is written.

In this community sessions sit late, because secondary students generally travel out of DAMAC Hills to school and arrive home after five. Sixty minutes twice a week produces more than ninety minutes once, and chemistry suits that pattern because calculation drill is better done briefly and often than at length and rarely.

One structural warning belongs near the top. Chemistry compounds: equilibrium assumes moles, redox assumes charge balancing, organic assumes both. A student failing organic chemistry in the second year frequently has a first-term stoichiometry problem wearing an organic disguise, and the diagnostic that finds it is to give a late-topic question and watch where they stop rather than to ask what they have not covered.

What follows is the subject itself, topic by topic, written as what the paper rewards and where the marks go. Dubai Diploma students sit the May session; this page publishes no IB session or results dates because none could be verified from the IB directly, so confirm every one with the school's Diploma coordinator.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages produce chemistry requests from this belt, and what the subject demands differs at each.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Stoichiometric relationships, atomic structure, periodicity, bonding and structure, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox processes, organic chemistry and measurement and analysis, with Higher Level extensions throughout and a further written paper. The scientific investigation is internally assessed against published criteria and moderated.

Dubai students sit the May session. Organic chemistry and the heavier analysis work arrive late in the second year, which is why DAMAC Hills enquiries cluster there even when the underlying weakness dates from the opening term of the first year.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences

Assessed against four criteria marked out of 8 each and converted by published boundaries. Because assessment is criterion-referenced rather than content-driven, quantitative skills such as ratio, proportion and unit handling can stay underdeveloped behind a respectable grade for two or three years.

The useful moment is the end of MYP 4, which leaves a year to build proportional reasoning before Diploma chemistry assumes it is automatic. Mudon and Town Square generate most of the enquiries at this stage in the belt.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry into the Diploma

Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 cover bonding, stoichiometry, acids and bases, electrolysis, organic chemistry and analysis. The step to Diploma chemistry is in quantitative depth and in the expectation that calculations are set out formally rather than in unfamiliar topics.

A summer bridging block between Year 11 and Year 12 is the standard DAMAC Hills request: the three mole templates plus the habit of writing the relationship before substituting. Six sessions covers it and removes most of the first-term difficulty.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry names what the topic rewards on the paper and the specific reason marks are withheld. This is the heart of the page and it is written to be used alongside a marked script.

Stoichiometric relationships

HL and SL

Moles, molar mass, concentration, limiting reagents, percentage yield and gas volumes. Every quantitative topic later in the course assumes this is automatic rather than merely familiar. Marks go to layout: the relationship written before substitution, so the method marks are available at all.

Atomic structure and periodicity

HL and SL

Electron configuration, ionisation energies and periodic trends, with orbital detail at Higher Level. Trend questions require a reason: 'ionisation energy increases across the period' scores nothing without nuclear charge and shielding named in the same answer.

Bonding and structure

HL and SL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, molecular shapes and, at Higher Level, hybridisation. The classic loss is explaining a boiling point by naming the bond type present instead of the intermolecular force actually being overcome when the substance boils.

Energetics and thermochemistry

HL and SL

Enthalpy changes, calorimetry, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies and, at Higher Level, entropy and spontaneity. Sign conventions decide the marks: an exothermic value given as positive loses the mark however correct the arithmetic behind it.

Chemical kinetics

HL and SL

Rate of reaction, collision theory, activation energy and, at Higher Level, rate laws and mechanisms. Explanation questions want a mechanism in words — more frequent successful collisions — rather than the observation that the reaction goes faster.

Equilibrium

HL and SL

Dynamic equilibrium, Le Chatelier's principle and, at Higher Level, the equilibrium constant and its calculations. The widest mark spread in the course, because students can recite the principle and cannot apply it to a specific perturbation in a specific reaction.

Acids and bases

HL and SL

Proton transfer, pH, strong and weak acids and, at Higher Level, buffers and titration curves. Logarithmic handling trips students who are otherwise sound, and titration curve questions reward reading named features rather than describing a shape.

Redox processes

HL and SL

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrochemical cells and electrolysis, with cell potentials at Higher Level. Half-equations lose marks for unbalanced charge as often as unbalanced mass, and both checks take seconds once they are habitual.

Organic chemistry

HL and SL

Functional groups, nomenclature, reaction types and mechanisms, with substantially more mechanism work at Higher Level. Mechanism marks turn on conventions: arrows from a lone pair or a bond, charges shown on intermediates, arrows pointing where the electrons go.

Measurement, analysis and the investigation

HL and SL

Uncertainty, error propagation, spectroscopic interpretation and the internally assessed investigation. Roughly half the investigation marks concern research design, analysis and evaluation rather than the result, so a sound experiment with a thin evaluation under-scores.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all live online and one to one, distinguished by what the student writes each week.

Calculation-template block

Four to six sessions installing the three calculation families as written layouts and drilling them under time. The most reliable mark recovery available in Diploma chemistry, because the arithmetic was rarely the problem and the layout is what the scheme pays for.

  • Relationship written, substitution shown with units, one rounding
  • Short frequent drills between sessions rather than long sets
  • Measured by speed and accuracy under time

Topic block on a named second-year topic

Eight sessions on equilibrium, kinetics, redox or organic chemistry, with past questions worked and marked by the student against the published scheme. Most effective when the stoichiometry underneath is already secure rather than being rebuilt at the same time.

  • One topic drilled across five years of past questions
  • Conventions taught explicitly where the topic has them
  • Error categories logged across weeks so repeats are visible

Investigation process block

Six to eight sessions planned around laboratory access, covering research question, variable control, uncertainty and criterion-by-criterion self-review. The tutor teaches the criteria and reviews the student's own writing, and produces no part of the report.

  • Research question narrowed until the data collection is feasible
  • Uncertainty planned before the data rather than after
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in DAMAC Hills

01

What an IB chemistry tutor in DAMAC Hills provides

  • Delivery is live, online and one-to-one in Gulf Standard Time
  • The core skill is naming withheld marks on a script, not reciting chemistry
  • Sequencing matters most in chemistry of the three Diploma sciences
  • No part of the investigation is written or produced for the student

An IB chemistry tutor in DAMAC Hills means one-to-one Diploma chemistry teaching arranged outside school for a student in the community, delivered by IB Gram live online over video in Gulf Standard Time. No tutor is sent to a DAMAC Hills address; in-home visiting is a service offered only in India, which is stated here rather than discovered during a conversation about scheduling.

The skill being bought is reading a marked chemistry script against the mark scheme and naming what was withheld. That is narrower than knowing chemistry and it is what the enquiry is actually for. A specialist will say that a calculation lost two method marks because the relationship was never written, that a boiling-point answer named the bond type instead of the force overcome, and that a half-equation balanced for mass and not for charge.

The second skill is sequencing, which matters more in chemistry than in the other Diploma sciences because the topics are not independent. Teaching equilibrium to a student whose mole work is slow produces a session that feels productive and a paper that does not improve. A tutor who diagnoses the dependency first will often spend the opening weeks on material from eighteen months earlier, which is counter-intuitive and correct.

What is not provided is help producing the investigation. A tutor explains the criteria, questions the variable control, discusses whether the data supports the conclusion, and gives feedback on the student's own writing. Writing, completing or producing any part of the report is a malpractice finding against the student, and pages in this market that sell finished internal assessments are selling that risk to the candidate rather than to themselves.

02

The three calculation families, in detail

Most of the numerical marks in Diploma chemistry are carried by three calculation types, and each has a layout the scheme rewards. The first is moles from mass, using molar mass. The second is moles from concentration and volume, for solutions. The third is limiting reagent and percentage yield work, which builds on the first two and is where multi-step reasoning is tested.

The layout matters because method marks are awarded separately from answer marks. Written as four lines — the known quantities, the relationship, the substitution with units, then the evaluation with one rounding at the end — a calculation makes every available method mark visible. Done mentally or on a calculator, it offers the examiner nothing to credit if the final number is wrong.

The second reason to teach them as templates is transfer. Energetics uses moles. Equilibrium uses concentrations. Redox uses mole ratios from half-equations. Organic yield questions use all three. A student whose templates are automatic meets each of those topics with one obstacle instead of two, which is the whole argument for installing them early rather than revising them late.

The table below sets out each family with what it needs, the layout and the specific place marks are withheld. It is designed to be used with a marked script: find a lost calculation mark, identify which row it belongs to, and the fix is in the last column rather than in a chapter of a textbook.

03

Bonding, structure and naming the right force

  • Identify what is being separated before naming any force
  • Name the intermolecular force, not the bond type present
  • Compare magnitudes with a reason: size or polarity
  • State electron-domain geometry and molecular shape where they differ
  • Precision of identification is what the scheme pays for throughout

Bonding produces one of the most consistent losses in the subject and it is a wording problem rather than a knowledge problem. Asked why one substance has a higher boiling point than another, students name the bonding present — covalent, ionic — when the scheme wants the intermolecular force that has to be overcome when the substance boils. A correct understanding expressed in the wrong register scores poorly, repeatedly.

The fix is a habit and it takes about two weeks. When a question asks about a physical property, identify what is being separated: molecules from each other, or ions from a lattice, or atoms within a giant structure. Then name the force involved. Hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, London dispersion, ionic lattice attraction. Then compare magnitudes with a reason, usually molecular size or polarity.

Molecular shape questions have their own convention. The shape follows from the number of electron domains and the number of lone pairs, and the answer is expected to state both the electron-domain geometry and the resulting molecular shape where they differ. Students who memorise shapes without the reasoning produce the right name and cannot handle an unfamiliar molecule.

At Higher Level the extensions add hybridisation and more detailed structure work, and both reward the same disciplined naming. The underlying point generalises across the whole subject: chemistry marks go to precise identification of what is happening, not to a general description of the situation. Students who learn that early find every later topic easier to write about.

04

Energetics: the conventions that cost marks

Energetics is a topic where a student can understand everything and still lose marks on every question, because it is governed by conventions. The sign of an enthalpy change is the first: exothermic is negative, and giving a positive value loses the mark however correct the arithmetic that produced it. Students treat this as a trivial slip and therefore never fix it, so it reappears in every assessment.

Calorimetry adds unit discipline. Mass in the right unit, specific heat capacity consistent with it, temperature change as a difference rather than an absolute value. Each of those is mechanical, and each is checkable in the final line of a student's own working. A tutor's job here is largely to make the student perform those checks until they stop requiring thought.

Hess cycles reward presentation. A cycle drawn with arrows and labels, then the relationship read from it, earns method marks that a single line of arithmetic does not. Students who can do the problem in their heads lose those marks consistently, which is the same pattern as in stoichiometry and has the same remedy.

Bond enthalpy calculations contain a predictable trap: bonds broken are endothermic and bonds formed are exothermic, and the arithmetic has to reflect that direction. At Higher Level the entropy and spontaneity work adds its own conventions around units and signs. None of this is conceptually hard and all of it is examined every series, which makes it exactly the kind of work a short block should prioritise.

05

Equilibrium and kinetics: applying rather than reciting

Equilibrium produces the widest spread of marks in the course, and the reason is specific. Students learn Le Chatelier's principle as a statement — a system shifts to oppose a change — and are then asked to apply it to a particular perturbation in a particular reaction with a particular mole ratio. Reciting the statement is easy; deciding what happens to the yield when pressure rises in a reaction with more moles of gas on the right is a different task.

The gap is diagnosable in a single session by asking for three specific perturbations in a row and listening to how the answers are constructed. A student who reasons from the mole ratio and the direction of the change has the skill. A student who repeats the principle and guesses the direction does not, and no amount of re-explanation will fix it. Drilled application will.

Kinetics has a parallel problem in its explanation questions. Asked why a higher temperature increases the rate, the scheme wants the mechanism: more particles have energy exceeding the activation energy, so a greater proportion of collisions are successful. 'The reaction goes faster' is the observation the question began with, and it earns nothing. At Higher Level, rate laws and mechanisms add their own conventions around orders and rate-determining steps.

The table sets out the common question types in both topics with what the scheme expects. Students should be able to produce the right-hand column from memory before a mock; most can produce the definitions and not the applications, and knowing which side of that line a student sits on takes ten minutes to establish.

EQUILIBRIUM AND KINETICS: WHAT THE QUESTION ACTUALLY ASKS
Question typeWhat students usually writeWhat the scheme expectsHow to drill it

06

Organic chemistry and the curly-arrow conventions

  • Nomenclature: spaced repetition from week one of the topic
  • Reactions and conditions: a table the student writes themselves
  • Mechanisms: conventions taught explicitly, then drilled
  • Arrows start from a lone pair or a bond, never from an atom
  • Book support during the pass, not after it has ended

Organic chemistry is taught late and, for most students in Dubai schools, taught once. What a student understands at the end of that single pass is roughly what they take into the papers, which makes the topic unusually sensitive to how it is revised rather than to how much.

The content divides into three kinds of knowledge and they need different treatment. Nomenclature and functional group recognition is memorisation and should run in the background by spaced repetition from the week the topic starts. Reaction types and conditions is organised memorisation, best built as a table the student writes themselves. Mechanisms are convention plus reasoning, and only the third genuinely needs teaching.

Mechanism marks turn on rules nobody states explicitly. A curly arrow must start from a lone pair or from a bond, never from an atom. It must point to where the electrons go rather than towards the next atom in the structure. Charges have to appear on intermediates. Students who learned mechanisms by copying finished diagrams reproduce the appearance without the rules and lose most of the available marks, which reads as carelessness and is not.

At Higher Level there is substantially more mechanism work, which makes the convention drill proportionally more valuable there. Two weeks of explicit convention work followed by drilled pathway practice resolves most organic enquiries from this belt, and it is markedly more effective booked during the second half of the school's teaching of the topic than after that teaching has finished.

07

Acids, bases, redox and the two checks

Two topics in the second half of the course are governed by checks a student can perform in seconds and almost never does. In redox, every half-equation has to balance for charge as well as for mass, and marks are lost for charge imbalance about as often as for mass imbalance. The check takes two seconds once it is habitual and is simply never taught as a routine.

In acids and bases the equivalent is logarithmic handling. pH calculations are straightforward and the errors are mechanical: a concentration entered without its power of ten, a logarithm taken of the wrong quantity, a strong acid treated as a weak one or the reverse. Higher Level adds buffers and titration curves, both of which reward reading named features rather than describing a shape in general terms.

Titration curve questions deserve particular mention because they are predictable and under-prepared. The scheme wants specific features identified: the equivalence point, the half-equivalence point where relevant, the buffer region, and the pH at a stated volume. A student who describes the curve as rising steeply and then levelling off has written a true sentence that earns nothing.

Oxidation states are the third check. Assigned without verifying that the total matches the overall charge, they produce errors that propagate through an entire electrochemistry question. Teaching the verification as a routine step, rather than as advice, is the difference between a student who occasionally gets these questions right and one who reliably does.

08

A past-paper routine for chemistry

  • Five recent years is the working set, not every paper published
  • Three modes: by topic, by paper to time, and re-attempting losses
  • The student marks their own work against the official scheme
  • One-line error log per lost mark, with its category and the fix
  • Re-attempt at two to three weeks, which is the step most skip

Chemistry past papers are usually used badly, in the same way across every school: start with an old paper, work forwards, mark it roughly, repeat. By the end of a term the student has attempted several papers and learned little that transfers, because nothing was logged and nothing was repeated at a useful interval.

The better routine has three modes. By topic, pulling every question on one topic from five years and working them consecutively, which reveals how narrow the question variation actually is. By paper, sat to time, which builds pacing and question-order judgement. And re-attempting previously lost questions two or three weeks later, which is the mode almost nobody uses and the one that makes a correction durable.

Marking is where the value sits, and the student should do it. Working against the official scheme and saying out loud why each mark was awarded or withheld teaches the examiner's logic, which is the thing being assessed. Work marked silently by an adult teaches the score and nothing else, which is why heavily marked students often plateau at the same grade for a year.

An error log makes the routine compound. One line per lost mark: the paper, the question, the category — calculation layout, named force, sign convention, charge balance, mechanism convention, terminology — and the fix. After four weeks the log shows that two or three categories account for most of the losses, and the revision plan writes itself without anybody needing to guess.

What the rates buy in chemistry specifically

The published bands in this market are these. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the university-student end. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate places specialists at AED 200 to 450 and beyond, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home visiting is quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors once travel is counted.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, with local packages advertised at around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. All of those are provider-published figures read in October 2026, and none is IB Gram's price list.

For chemistry the relevant question is what each band can read. The budget band buys supervision: homework completed, content recapped, a student kept moving. It does not buy someone who can look at a marked Higher Level script and identify that a half-equation balanced for mass and not charge, or that a boiling-point answer named the wrong force. That is the working band and above.

The in-home premium resolves clearly in this subject. What it buys is a journey, and in this part of Dubailand that journey is thirty to forty-five minutes each way at the hour a session would need to run. What the same money buys online is a tutor who has taught the Higher Level extensions, and in a subject where a school cohort may contain a handful of Higher Level candidates, that is the difference that matters.

Honesty, permits and what is not claimed

  • No part of the investigation is written, completed or produced by a tutor
  • Board documents are linked at source, never reproduced or supplied
  • No board or regulator accreditation is held or claimed; no UAE office exists
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No grade promised and no examiner status claimed without evidence

Three limits belong on a chemistry page. The first concerns assessed work: a tutor teaches the investigation criteria, questions the variable control, discusses whether the data supports the conclusion and gives feedback on the student's own draft, and does not write, complete or produce any part of the report. Providers in this market sell finished internal assessments at a price; the finding lands on the candidate rather than on them.

The second concerns board material. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the boards and are referenced and linked at source here rather than reproduced or supplied. Reproducing them is a copyright matter, and for unreleased material it is worse. A provider offering a private library of board documents is doing something to be cautious about.

The third concerns status and outcomes. IB Gram holds no International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or Ministry of Education approval or accreditation, claims none, and operates no office or centre in the UAE. No grade is promised. Tutors are not described as examiners without evidence of current status, and examiner status is never presented as access to marking, boundaries or paper content.

On the regulatory side, private tuition in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so quoted amounts are unverified.

Where we tutor

Chemistry requests across these communities

The chemistry is identical wherever a student lives. What differs is the arrival time at home and the pattern of sessions that survives a term.

DAMAC Hills

A school inside the community, with many secondary students travelling out to Al Barsha, Jumeirah or the Ranches. Home after five, so calculation drill works better in two shorter sessions than one long evening.

DAMAC Hills 2

Longer bus routes along the Dubai-Al Ain corridor. One weekday evening plus a weekend morning is the pattern that holds through a term here.

Mudon

Adjacent and younger, with MYP science dominant. Proportional reasoning is the high-value work and it is exactly what Diploma chemistry will later assume.

Arabian Ranches 3

Closer to DAMAC Hills than to the original Ranches, with Diploma demand rising. Requests here name organic chemistry or the investigation most often.

Arabian Ranches and Ranches 2

The largest Diploma cohorts nearby and the heaviest Higher Level chemistry demand. Residents in the local cluster are home earlier and have wider session options.

Remraam and Dubailand Residence

Commutes near an hour each way. Online delivery is what makes a second weekly chemistry session possible during an exam year at all.

Town Square and Motor City

Town Square skews younger; Motor City loses weekday evenings to training. Both argue for weekend mornings during a fixture season.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and a marked script

'Chemistry HL, second Diploma year, mock 4' plus the script is enough to decide whether a specialist is free and what the block should target. The script shows whether the losses are layout, convention, dependency or genuinely about content.

  2. 02

    Find where the student stops

The trial session uses mixed questions from the later topics and watches for the point of failure rather than testing topic by topic. A student who stalls converting a concentration to moles has a first-term problem wearing a second-year disguise.

  3. 03

    Install the templates first

Where the diagnosis points at layout or stoichiometry, the opening weeks go there even though the presenting complaint was organic chemistry or equilibrium. That ordering is unintuitive for families and it is what makes the block move a mark.

  4. 04

    Weekly work, self-marked, logged

Questions are set from five recent years and marked by the student against the official scheme in the session, with every withheld mark named and categorised. The log runs across weeks so a convention that keeps failing becomes visible rather than re-explained.

  5. 05

    Review at four sessions

The target is measured in writing at the halfway point. If the log shows the same categories recurring, the diagnosis, the tutor or the frequency changes at no cost. Making that call at week four rather than week eight is the whole difference in an exam year.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught from the mark scheme

A textbook explains chemistry; a mark scheme states what earns a mark. The gap between them is where a capable student's missing marks sit, and working from the second document is what distinguishes a block that moves a paper score from one that produces pleasant sessions.

Three calculation families as templates

Moles from mass, moles from concentration and volume, and limiting reagent or yield work carry most of the numerical marks and transfer into energetics, equilibrium, redox and organic. Installed as written layouts and drilled under time, they take four to six sessions.

Conventions named rather than assumed

Enthalpy signs, charge balance in half-equations, curly arrows from a lone pair or a bond, the intermolecular force rather than the bond type. Each is a two-second check or a two-week habit, and each is examined every series in several questions at once.

Dependency diagnosed before content

Chemistry compounds, so most second-year failures are first-year debts. Finding where the student stops, rather than what they have not covered, prevents a block being spent teaching equilibrium to someone whose mole work is the actual obstacle.

Students mark their own work

Marking against the official scheme while the tutor asks why each mark was awarded teaches the examiner's logic and transfers to papers nobody has marked. Work marked silently by an adult teaches the score, which is why heavily marked students often plateau.

Rates and limits both published

Every AED figure names the provider that published it and the month it was read. No accreditation is claimed, no UAE office exists, no grade is promised, board documents are linked rather than supplied, and no part of an investigation is produced for a student.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in DAMAC Hills: your questions answered

Which three chemistry calculations should a Diploma student master first?+

Moles from mass using molar mass, moles from concentration and volume for solutions, and limiting reagent or percentage yield work. Between them they carry most of the numerical marks and they transfer directly into energetics, equilibrium, redox and organic chemistry. Each has a layout the scheme rewards: write the known values, write the relationship, substitute with units, then evaluate with one rounding at the end. Four to six sessions installs all three.

Can an IB chemistry tutor visit a home in DAMAC Hills?+

Not through IB Gram. All UAE lessons are delivered live online, one to one, over video in Gulf Standard Time, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For chemistry the shared screen is a real advantage, because calculation layout is what earns method marks and a tutor can watch the working appear line by line and stop at the step where it broke rather than after the final answer is written down.

Why does my child lose marks on boiling point questions?+

Almost certainly because the answer names the bonding present rather than the intermolecular force being overcome when the substance boils. The understanding is usually sound and the register is wrong, and the scheme pays for the register. The habit that fixes it takes about two weeks: identify what is being separated, name the specific force — hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole, London dispersion — then compare magnitudes with a reason such as molecular size or polarity.

Do enthalpy sign errors really cost marks in IB chemistry?+

Enough to matter, and they recur. An exothermic enthalpy change given as positive loses the mark however correct the arithmetic behind it, and the same convention appears in calorimetry, Hess cycles and bond enthalpy calculations. Students treat it as a trivial slip and therefore never fix it, so it reappears in every assessment. The remedy is procedural: check the sign before moving on from any energetics answer, every time, until it stops requiring thought.

What makes equilibrium questions so hard to score on?+

The gap between reciting Le Chatelier's principle and applying it. Students learn that a system shifts to oppose a change and are then asked what happens to the yield when pressure rises in a specific reaction with a specific mole ratio of gases, or when temperature rises given a specific enthalpy sign. Those are deductions, not recitations. Three specific perturbations asked in a row will establish within ten minutes which side of that line a student is on.

Why do correct-looking organic mechanisms score badly?+

Because mechanism marks turn on conventions rather than on appearance. A curly arrow must start from a lone pair or from a bond, never from an atom, and must point to where the electrons go rather than towards the next atom in the structure. Charges have to be shown on intermediates. Students who learned mechanisms by copying finished diagrams reproduce the look without the rules, and lose most of the available marks for reasons that read as carelessness.

What is the quickest check to add to a redox answer?+

Balance every half-equation for charge as well as for mass. Marks are lost for charge imbalance about as often as for mass imbalance, and the check takes two seconds once it is habitual. The second check is oxidation states: verify that the assigned states total the overall charge of the species before using them, because an error there propagates through an entire electrochemistry question and looks like a conceptual failure when it is arithmetic.

How should organic chemistry be revised given it is taught last?+

Split it into three kinds of work and treat them differently. Nomenclature and functional groups is memorisation and should run in the background by spaced repetition from the week the topic starts at school. Reactions and conditions is organised memorisation, best built as a table the student writes themselves rather than one they are given. Mechanisms need teaching, and the useful time to book that is during the second half of the school's pass rather than after it.

Why would a tutor start with first-year material in the second year?+

Because chemistry compounds. Equilibrium assumes moles, redox assumes charge balancing, and organic assumes both. A student failing organic chemistry frequently has a stoichiometry problem from the opening term wearing an organic disguise, and the way to find out is to give a late-topic question and watch where they stop. Teaching the presenting topic to a student whose mole work is slow produces a productive-feeling session and an unchanged paper mark.

How should chemistry past papers be used?+

In three modes. By topic, pulling every question on one topic from five recent years and working them consecutively so the narrow question variation becomes visible. By paper, sat to time, for pacing. And re-attempting previously lost questions two or three weeks later, which almost nobody does and which is what makes a correction durable. Keep a one-line error log per lost mark with its category, and review it rather than restarting it.

What do titration curve questions actually want?+

Named features rather than a description of the shape. The equivalence point, the half-equivalence point where relevant, the buffer region, and the pH at a stated volume. A student who writes that the curve rises steeply and then levels off has produced a true sentence that earns nothing. The questions are predictable in format and under-prepared in practice, which makes them a reliable source of recoverable marks at Higher Level.

Can a tutor help with my child's chemistry investigation?+

A tutor can teach the published criteria, explain the mark ceiling on each, question the variable control, discuss whether the data supports the conclusion and give feedback on what the student has written. A tutor cannot write, complete or produce any part of the report. That is an IB academic-honesty rule rather than a preference, and work a student did not produce becomes a malpractice finding against the student rather than against whoever supplied it.

Is the budget rate band ever right for Diploma chemistry?+

For homework supervision and content recap with a first-year student who is coping but disorganised, it can be. For reading a marked Higher Level script and identifying that a half-equation balanced for mass and not charge, or that a calculation lost two method marks because the relationship was never written, it is not. That is the working band and above, and paying the low rate for the high-skill task usually means paying twice.

How long does a chemistry block need to be?+

Four to six sessions for the calculation templates or a single convention, because both are habits. Around eight for a named second-year topic drilled against past questions. One to two terms if the real obstacle is proportional reasoning or unit handling, since fluency is built by short frequent practice rather than taught in a lesson. Any session count quoted before somebody has read a marked script is a guess about the diagnosis.

Send a script and we will name the withheld marks

For an IB chemistry tutor in DAMAC Hills, the useful first message names the level and attaches the most recent marked script. The trial session reads that script against the mark scheme and names what was withheld and why — layout, a convention, a named force, a dependency from eighteen months earlier — and then says what a block should target and what it should leave alone. Lessons are live online in Gulf Standard Time, in sessions short enough to work after the school run.
