IB Maths Tutor in DAMAC Hills

An IB maths tutor in DAMAC Hills has to work around a long school day and a subject where skill decays between sessions. This page is organised around time: the two-year topic sequence, what a student should be doing on the days there is no lesson, and what the split between Paper 1 and Paper 2 tells you. IB Gram teaches DAMAC Hills, Mudon and Arabian Ranches 3 students live online, one to one, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Analysis and Applications matched as separate specialisms
  • Short daily work set between sessions, not one long problem set
  • Live one-to-one online lessons from 5.30pm GST
  • Written target agreed in session one, reviewed at session four

IB & IGCSE in DAMAC Hills

Maths is the subject that decays between lessons

Mathematics behaves differently from every other Diploma subject in one specific way: the skill fades without use. A student can understand integration completely on a Tuesday and be slower at it by the following Tuesday, not because they have forgotten the idea but because fluency is a motor skill as much as a conceptual one. That single fact should shape how a maths block is scheduled, and it almost never does.

The usual arrangement is one hour a week. For content teaching that is sensible. For fluency it is close to useless, because six days pass between every repetition and the student arrives each week slightly slower than they left. The arrangement that works is a session plus short daily work: ten minutes of written drill four times between lessons, which costs nothing and changes the rate at which anything sticks.

In DAMAC Hills there is a second scheduling constraint. Secondary students here generally travel out of the community to school and arrive home after five, so the session itself has to sit late and has to be shorter than a tired student can usefully absorb. Sixty minutes twice a week produces more than ninety minutes once, and the daily drill fills the gaps between both.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition live, one to one and online over video in Gulf Standard Time. No tutor is sent to a DAMAC Hills address, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For mathematics the shared screen is the better surface regardless: the tutor reads the working line by line as it appears and can stop at the step where the method broke, rather than reading a page sideways across a table after the answer is finished.

The second thing this page is organised around is the topic sequence. IB mathematics is taught in an order, each part assumes the last, and the assessment visits topics at predictable points. Knowing when a topic is taught and when it is first examined tells a family when to intervene, which is a more useful question than how many hours to buy.

The third is diagnosis from the paper split. A student with two or three papers has a mark on each, and the pattern between them says more than the total does. A strong Paper 2 with a weak Paper 1 on the Analysis route is a specific, nameable problem. The reverse is a different one. Both are visible on a mock result and both are routinely ignored.

Dubai Diploma students sit the May session. This page publishes no IB session or results dates, because none could be verified from the IB directly; confirm every one with the school's Diploma coordinator, who in any case holds the internal deadlines that bind first.

At a glance

  • Fluency decays between weekly sessions; short daily drill prevents it
  • Sixty minutes twice a week beats ninety minutes once after a long commute
  • The topic sequence tells you when to intervene, not just how much
  • The split between papers is a diagnosis most families never read
  • Confirm all IB dates with your school's Diploma coordinator
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages produce maths requests from this part of Dubailand, and the decay problem looks different at each one.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Every Diploma student takes one mathematics course: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. Two written papers at Standard Level and three at Higher, plus the exploration, which is internally assessed against published criteria and moderated. Paper 1 on the Analysis route is sat without a calculator.

Dubai students sit the May session, and the exploration deadline usually falls in the middle of the second year, before the mock window. DAMAC Hills families most often enquire after a mock, when the paper split has made the problem visible but fewer weeks remain to act on it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8 and converted by published boundaries, with standard and extended routes in the later years. Because assessment is continuous and criterion-based, slow manipulation can persist for years behind an acceptable grade without anything in the reporting flagging it.

The end of MYP 4 is the useful intervention point, since it leaves a full year to build fluency before the Diploma route decision. Families in Mudon and Town Square tend to act at the end of MYP 5 instead, which compresses a rebuild into a bridge.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE into Diploma mathematics

Students arriving from Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1 meet a step in abstraction rather than in topic coverage. Those who took Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics have usually met calculus, function notation and trigonometric identities already and find the first Diploma term materially easier.

A summer bridging block is the standard DAMAC Hills request at this point, and it is the cheapest effective purchase in the whole sequence: short daily manipulation work across July and August, with six sessions to steer it, rather than reading ahead into new content.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IB mathematics is one subject in four versions plus a coursework component. Each entry notes what it demands and how quickly the demand decays without practice.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

Proof, calculus, complex numbers and series at depth, across three papers including the extended problem-solving Paper 3. The most decay-sensitive course in the Diploma: algebraic technique unused for a fortnight becomes measurably slower, which shows up as unfinished questions rather than wrong ones.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

The same algebraic spine at reduced depth across two papers, one without a calculator. Differentiation and integration technique decide most grades, and both respond to short frequent practice far better than to long weekly sessions.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Modelling, statistics, matrices and graph theory with technology permitted throughout, including a Paper 3 of investigation tasks. Less decay-sensitive in manipulation and more so in calculator procedure, which is forgotten with equal reliability.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Modelling, functions, statistics and probability across two calculator-permitted papers. The marks sit in interpretation: a regression produced without a comment, or a test run without a conclusion in context, scores a fraction of what it could.

The mathematical exploration

Both routes, both levels

Individual mathematical writing marked against published criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. Roughly half the marks are for process and communication rather than for the mathematics itself.

Paper 1

AA without calculator; AI with

The paper that exposes fluency on the Analysis route, because there is nowhere to hide a slow rearrangement. A weak Paper 1 against a solid Paper 2 is the single clearest diagnostic signal available in Diploma mathematics.

Paper 2

Both routes, calculator permitted

Technology-permitted problem solving. Losses cluster in calculator syntax and in accuracy conventions rather than in mathematics, which is why a weak Paper 2 against a solid Paper 1 points at the machine rather than at the student.

Paper 3

Higher Level only

Two extended tasks leading a candidate through unfamiliar mathematics. Tolerance for the first ten minutes, when nothing is obvious, is the skill being tested, and it is built by repeated exposure rather than by teaching.

Graphic display calculator procedure

Both routes

Regression, distributions, solvers and numerical methods on the exact model the school uses. Procedures learned once and not repeated are forgotten within weeks, which makes this a maintenance task rather than a one-off lesson.

Pre-Diploma manipulation

Bridging

Rearrangement, indices, surds, function notation and early differentiation. The narrowest and highest-return work available, and the only version that changes what the two years can be rather than how the last term goes.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all live online and one to one, and all built on the assumption that what happens between sessions matters as much as the session.

Twice-weekly fluency pattern

Two sixty-minute sessions a week with ten minutes of written drill set for the days between. Designed around decay rather than around content coverage, and the pattern that works best for a student arriving home after five with slow manipulation.

  • Short written drill four times between lessons
  • Progress measured by speed under time, not by topics covered
  • Sessions kept to sixty minutes because concentration is the limit

Exploration checkpoint block

Three or four sessions placed at specific checkpoints rather than weekly: feasibility of the topic, soundness of the mathematics, and a criterion-by-criterion self-review of the draft. The tutor teaches the criteria and reviews the student's own work, and produces no part of the submission.

  • Checkpoints rather than a weekly slot, so the student works between them
  • Criteria taught by name with their mark ceilings stated
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only

Paper-split recovery block

Eight sessions aimed at whichever paper the mock split identified, with the other left alone. For Analysis students that usually means non-calculator work; for Applications students it usually means calculator procedure and contextual interpretation.

  • One paper type per session, sat to time
  • Losses categorised and logged across weeks
  • The strong paper deliberately not revised

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in DAMAC Hills

01

What an IB maths tutor in DAMAC Hills is asked to do

  • Four distinct requests: route, fluency, exploration, paper marks
  • Classwork strong and paper marks weak is fluency, not comprehension
  • The route decision has consequences two years later
  • Sessions at 5.30pm or weekend mornings, sixty minutes, with daily drill

An IB maths tutor in DAMAC Hills is asked for one of four things: a route decision before the Diploma begins, manipulation that was never fluent, an exploration with a deadline attached, or paper marks that do not match classroom performance. IB Gram provides that teaching live online, one to one, in Gulf Standard Time; no tutor is sent to a DAMAC Hills address and in-home visiting runs only in India.

The fourth is the most common and the most misread. A student who follows the lesson and scores poorly on papers has a fluency or technique problem, not a comprehension problem, and more explanation will not move it. What moves it is repetition under time, marking against the published scheme, and naming the specific reason each mark was withheld — a reasoning line missing, a calculator result with no supporting algebra, an accuracy error carried forward.

The first is the most consequential. The Analysis and Applications routes lead to different places, and some degree programmes in mathematics, engineering, physics and economics expect Analysis by name. A student who chooses on comfort in Year 11 and discovers a prerequisite in Year 13 has a problem no tutoring resolves, and that conversation takes two sessions in the term the option form is due.

For this community the practical arrangement matters as much as the diagnosis. Sessions sit at 5.30pm or later, or on a weekend morning. They run sixty minutes rather than ninety. And they come with short daily work set between them, because a weekly hour with nothing in between is how a maths block produces pleasant sessions and an unchanged mark.

02

The two-year topic sequence, and when each part is examined

Diploma mathematics is taught in a sequence, and each part assumes the one before it. Algebra and functions open the course because everything else is an application of them. Trigonometry and sequences follow. Calculus arrives in the middle and occupies most of the remaining time. Statistics and probability sit alongside, and on the Applications route they carry considerably more weight.

The assessment visits those topics at predictable points, which is the useful part. A school assessment in the first term tests algebra and functions, so a weak result there is an early and cheap signal. A first full paper late in the first year tests everything taught so far under time, which is where fluency problems surface. The mock in the second year tests the whole course, by which point a foundation gap is expensive.

Knowing that sequence changes when a family should act. A student who struggles with the opening algebra topics in the first term has eighteen months in which the problem is still cheap to solve. The same student discovered at the mock has ten weeks. Nothing about the mathematics changed; only the number of available weeks did, and that is the entire cost difference.

The table below sets the sequence against what each stage depends on and what to check before moving past it. It is written for the first Diploma year, when the checks cost almost nothing, rather than for the second, when each one has a price attached.

03

The week between sessions

If a single change had to be made to how maths tutoring is bought in this market, it would be to the days with no lesson on them. Fluency is built by short frequent repetition, and a weekly hour provides none of it. Ten minutes of written work four times between sessions is a trivial commitment and it changes the rate at which everything sticks.

The content of that daily work should be narrow and old rather than broad and current. Three rearrangements, two differentiations, one integral — material already taught, repeated for speed rather than for understanding. Students resist it because it feels like going backwards, and it is precisely the thing that stops the backwards slide that otherwise happens between Tuesdays.

The weekend task is different in kind: one longer piece, a paper section sat to time or a set of past questions on the current topic, marked by the student against the official scheme. That is the work that generates the material for the next session, and it is why the session has something to diagnose rather than something to explain again.

The table below is a template rather than a prescription, written for a student in DAMAC Hills who gets home after five and has two sessions a week. The point is that the four quiet days are doing work, and that work is small enough to survive a long school day.

The test of whether the pattern is working is speed rather than accuracy. Time three rearrangements at the start of a block and time the same three a month later. If the answers were right both times but took half as long on the second attempt, the drill is doing its job and the Paper 1 mark will follow. If the time has not changed, the daily work is not actually happening, which is a more common finding than any tutor would like to admit.

04

The exploration, handled as three checkpoints

  • Three checkpoints, not a weekly slot, so the student works between them
  • Feasibility first: is there tractable mathematics at course level
  • Soundness second, while there is still time to redo the mathematics
  • Criterion review third, with the student self-marking the draft
  • No part of the exploration is written or completed by a tutor

The mathematical exploration does not need a weekly tutor and frequently gets one. It needs three decisions made at the right times, and a student working in between. Treating it as a weekly slot tends to produce a student who waits for the session to make progress, which is the opposite of what a piece of independent mathematical writing is supposed to develop.

Checkpoint one is feasibility, and it is the one that earns most. Students choose topics they find interesting and discover the mathematics is either trivial or beyond the course. The test is whether there is mathematics at their own level that can be done properly in the space available, and that judgement takes a single conversation. A tractable topic chosen early is worth more than four extra sessions later.

Checkpoint two is soundness, placed once the mathematics is drafted. Is it correct, is it at course level, and does it actually address the question posed? Errors found here are fixable. Errors found in the final fortnight are not, because the time needed to redo the mathematics no longer exists.

Checkpoint three is the criterion review. Roughly half the available marks concern presentation, communication, personal engagement and reflection rather than the mathematics. The student self-marks their own draft against each criterion, with the mark ceiling for each stated, and justifies the mark they have given themselves. The tutor gives feedback on what the student wrote and produces no part of it, which is an IB academic-honesty rule rather than a preference.

05

Reading the paper split after a mock

A mock in Diploma mathematics produces two or three paper marks, and the relationship between them is a diagnosis. Most families look at the overall grade and miss it entirely. The split takes five minutes to read and usually names the block without any professional help at all.

On the Analysis route, a solid Paper 2 with a weak Paper 1 is the classic signal: the mathematics is understood and the manipulation is not fluent, because Paper 1 removes the calculator that was concealing it. That student needs daily drill and non-calculator practice, not more teaching. The reverse pattern — Paper 1 solid, Paper 2 weak — points at calculator procedure and accuracy conventions rather than at mathematics.

On the Applications route both papers permit technology, so the split is less diagnostic and the loss pattern within each paper matters more. The common finding is outputs produced without interpretation: a regression with no comment, a test with no conclusion in context. That is a writing habit and it responds quickly.

At Higher Level, Paper 3 almost always sits below the others in a first mock, and that is structural rather than informative. It is the paper nobody has sat to time, and the remedy is exposure early in the second year rather than additional content. The table sets out what each pattern means and what it implies for the next eight weeks.

One further pattern deserves naming because it is the most misread. Where both papers sit low and the classroom work has been fine all year, the likely explanation is a foundation gap rather than a technique problem, and an eight-week technique block will produce a disappointing result. That student needs a longer rebuild and deserves to be told so before money changes hands, not in week six when nothing has moved.

What to do in each school break

Dubai schools give three breaks, and in mathematics each has a different best use. Treating all three as rest is the most common planning error available, because they are also the only periods in which a student has time without competing deadlines.

The winter break of the second Diploma year is the best exploration window there is. No new teaching, free days, and the opportunity to finish a draft before mock revision begins rather than alongside it. Three or four working days across the break removes the February collision that families in this belt describe every year.

The spring break sits close to the papers and belongs to timed practice. Two full papers sat properly, marked against the scheme, with the losses categorised, is worth more than a fortnight of reading notes. It is also the point at which the omissions should be written down: what will not be revised, decided deliberately rather than by running out of time.

The long summer between the two Diploma years is the highest-value break and the one most often wasted. First-year gaps are still cheap to close, and short daily manipulation work across July and August, with a handful of sessions to steer it, changes what the second year can be. Reading ahead instead usually leaves the gap in place with more content stacked on top.

The common objection is that a student needs a rest, and that is fair. The version of break work described here is deliberately small: ten or fifteen minutes a day with a handful of sessions to steer it, which leaves a holiday intact. The alternative is not rest followed by progress; it is rest followed by a term in which the same gap costs marks in every assessment, which is a worse holiday by the time February arrives.

What a maths block costs, by the term you buy it in

The published rates in this market are these. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the university-student end. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate places specialists at AED 200 to 450 and beyond, with in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500 once travel is counted. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium named end.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, with local packages advertised at around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. All of these are provider-published figures read in October 2026, and none is IB Gram's price list.

The twice-weekly pattern this page recommends costs more per month than a single weekly hour, which is worth stating plainly rather than buried. What it buys is a session structure that matches how fluency is actually built, and it is usually bought for a shorter total period: two months of twice-weekly work rather than two terms of once-weekly work that never quite moves the Paper 1 mark.

The table sets out the cost by the term in which a family starts. The pattern is the same as in every subject and more pronounced here, because mathematics compounds: the manipulation taught in the first term is used in every topic afterwards, so buying it early is both cheaper and more valuable than buying it late.

Limits, permits and claims not made

  • No part of an exploration is written, completed or produced by a tutor
  • No grade, points total or admission outcome is promised
  • No board or regulator accreditation is held or claimed; no UAE office exists
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Examiner status is never claimed without evidence or used to imply access

Three limits belong on a mathematics page. The first concerns assessed work: a tutor teaches the exploration criteria, questions whether the mathematics is sound, and gives feedback on the student's own draft, and does not write, complete or produce any part of it. Pages competing for these searches sell finished internal assessments; that is an academic-integrity breach and the finding lands on the candidate.

The second concerns outcomes. No tutor can promise a grade, a points total or a university place. What can be promised is a stated target per block, a written review at four sessions, and an honest answer when the target has not moved. Mathematics is unusually measurable, which makes that accountability easier here than in essay subjects and makes its absence less excusable.

The third concerns status. IB Gram holds no International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or Ministry of Education approval or accreditation, claims none, and operates no office or centre in the UAE. Tutors are not described as examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, and examiner status is never used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content.

On the regulatory side, private tuition in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so quoted amounts are unverified.

Where we tutor

Maths scheduling across these communities

The mathematics is identical everywhere. What differs is how late the student gets home and therefore which session pattern survives a term.

DAMAC Hills

A school inside the community, with many secondary students travelling out to Al Barsha, Jumeirah or the Ranches. Home after five, so two shorter evening sessions work where one long one does not.

DAMAC Hills 2

Longer bus routes again. Blocks here are usually built as one weekday evening plus a weekend morning, with daily drill filling the days between.

Mudon

Adjacent and younger, with MYP mathematics the common request. The valuable work is manipulation at the end of MYP 4, before the route decision has to be made.

Arabian Ranches 3

Closer to DAMAC Hills than to the original Ranches, with growing Diploma demand. Requests here most often name the exploration rather than a paper.

Arabian Ranches and Ranches 2

The largest Diploma cohorts nearby and the heaviest Higher Level Analysis demand. Shorter school runs mean earlier sessions are possible for residents there.

Remraam and Dubailand Residence

Commutes near an hour each way. A sixty-minute session at six plus daily ten-minute drills is the only pattern that reliably holds through a term here.

Town Square and Motor City

Town Square skews younger. Motor City students lose weekday evenings to training, which pushes maths blocks onto weekend mornings during a season.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say the route, the level and the paper marks

'Analysis HL, second year, Paper 1 a 3 and Paper 2 a 6' is a diagnosis in one line. The split between papers says more than the overall grade does, and it usually names the block before any tutor has looked at a script.

  2. 02

Agree the slot and the daily work

Sessions sit at 5.30pm or later, or on a weekend morning, and run sixty minutes. Ten minutes of written drill is set for four of the days in between. The daily work is part of the plan rather than optional homework, because fluency decays within days.

  3. 03

    Diagnostic trial lesson

A full online session with the proposed specialist, spent on the student's own marked paper and on twenty minutes of non-calculator manipulation. It ends with a written target: a Paper 1 score, a rearrangement speed, a criterion to satisfy. Nothing is committed.

  4. 04

    Work the strong paper less

Where the split identifies one paper, the block targets it and deliberately leaves the other. That feels uncomfortable and it is what makes an eight-week block produce a visible change rather than an even spread of small improvements.

  5. 05

    Review at four sessions

The target is measured on the same paper type, to the same time, against the same scheme. Mathematics makes this comparison clean. If the number has not moved, the diagnosis, the tutor or the frequency changes, at no cost and without awkwardness.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built around decay, not coverage

Fluency fades within days, so a weekly hour with nothing in between produces a student who arrives each week slightly slower. Two shorter sessions plus ten minutes of daily drill is the pattern that matches how the skill is actually built, and it costs nothing extra to run.

The paper split read as a diagnosis

A solid Paper 2 with a weak Paper 1 on the Analysis route names the problem precisely: understanding present, manipulation not fluent. Families look at the overall grade and miss it. Reading the split takes five minutes and usually identifies the block without professional help.

Exploration run as checkpoints

Three decisions at the right times — feasibility, soundness, criterion review — with the student working in between. A weekly slot on an independent piece of mathematical writing tends to produce a student who waits for the session to make progress.

Routes matched separately

Analysis punishes weak manipulation; Applications punishes outputs produced without interpretation. A tutor strong in algebraic technique is not automatically right for an Applications student whose losses are all in contextual writing, and matching by route is the first filter applied.

Scheduled for a student home after five

Sixty minutes rather than ninety, from 5.30pm or on a weekend morning, because concentration rather than teaching time is the constraint after a commute from Al Barsha or the Ranches. Online delivery is what makes that pattern choosable at all.

Measurable targets and stated limits

Every block carries a target comparable month to month under the same conditions, reviewed in writing at session four. No grade is promised, no accreditation is claimed, no UAE office exists, and no part of an exploration is produced for a student.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in DAMAC Hills: your questions answered

Why does my child seem to get slower at maths between lessons?+

Because fluency is partly a motor skill and it decays within days rather than weeks. A student can understand integration completely on a Tuesday and be measurably slower at it the following Tuesday without having forgotten the concept. That is why a weekly hour alone rarely moves a Paper 1 mark. Ten minutes of written drill on old material, four times between sessions, costs nothing and changes the rate at which everything else sticks.

Can an IB maths tutor come to a house in DAMAC Hills?+

Not through IB Gram. All UAE lessons are delivered live online, one to one, over video in Gulf Standard Time, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For mathematics the shared screen is arguably the better surface: the tutor reads the working line by line as it appears and can stop at the exact step where the method broke, rather than reading a finished page sideways across a table.

What does a weak Paper 1 with a strong Paper 2 actually mean?+

On the Analysis route it is the clearest diagnostic signal available. Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, so it removes the machine that was concealing slow manipulation. Understanding is present; fluency is not. That student needs daily drill and non-calculator practice rather than more teaching, and the improvement is measurable on a comparable paper within about six weeks. The reverse pattern points at calculator procedure and accuracy conventions instead.

How long should a maths session be after a long school run?+

Sixty minutes. Secondary students in DAMAC Hills generally arrive home after five, and a ninety-minute session at that hour produces perhaps forty minutes of usable work plus fatigue that damages willingness to attend the next one. Two sixty-minute sessions a week, with short drill on the days between, produces more than one long weekly session and is more resilient when something in the week moves.

What should the daily ten minutes of maths actually contain?+

Old material, repeated for speed rather than for understanding. Three rearrangements, two differentiations, one integral — things already taught. Students resist it because it feels like going backwards, and that is exactly the point: it stops the backwards slide that otherwise happens between sessions. Keep it written rather than mental, rotate which operation leads, and do not extend it. Ten minutes done four times beats forty minutes done once.

Does the exploration need a weekly tutor?+

No, and a weekly slot often makes it worse by training the student to wait for the session. It needs three checkpoints: feasibility of the topic, soundness of the mathematics once drafted, and a criterion-by-criterion review of the draft. Between those the student works alone, which is what an independent piece of mathematical writing is meant to develop. Roughly half the marks concern process and communication rather than mathematics.

Which IB maths route should be chosen, and when?+

Decide in the term the option form is due, on two pieces of evidence. First, manipulation assessed under non-calculator conditions, which predicts Analysis performance better than any school report. Second, the admissions pages of the specific universities and courses under consideration, because some programmes in mathematics, engineering and physics expect Analysis by name. Neither route is the easy one: Analysis punishes weak manipulation, Applications punishes outputs with no interpretation.

Why is Paper 3 always the lowest mark in a first mock?+

Because almost nobody has sat one to time before. Paper 3 presents two extended tasks leading a candidate through unfamiliar mathematics, and the skill it tests is tolerance for the first ten minutes when nothing is obvious. That is exposure, not content. Attempting Paper 3 style tasks to time early in the second Diploma year, then again a few weeks later, moves a Higher Level profile more than any additional topic teaching at the same point.

How should the summer between the two Diploma years be used for maths?+

Short daily manipulation work across July and August, with a handful of sessions to steer it, aimed at the two topics the student already knows they never understood. It is the largest block of uncommitted time in the two years and it sits exactly where first-year gaps are still cheap to close. Reading ahead into new content instead usually leaves the gap in place with more material stacked on top of it.

Can the calculator really be costing marks?+

Regularly, and almost always through syntax rather than mathematics: a regression read from the wrong field, a distribution function given its arguments in the wrong order, an answer left in a display format the question did not request. Procedures learned once and never repeated are forgotten within weeks, so this is maintenance rather than a single lesson. One session on the exact model the school uses, revisited periodically, removes a recurring loss.

Is one term enough to fix slow algebra?+

Usually a term or two, and only with short frequent practice rather than long sessions. Fluency is built by repetition, so the limiting factor is how many days the student practises rather than how many hours a tutor teaches. That is also why the cost of fixing it rises sharply as the course progresses: in the first Diploma year there are enough weeks; in the final term there are not, and the honest plan becomes triage.

What does twice-weekly maths cost compared with once a week?+

More per month and often less in total, because it is bought for a shorter period. Using Bestimate's published monthly estimates, weekly hour-long sessions run AED 600 to 1,200 at the mid band and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Two months of twice-weekly work costs more monthly than two terms of weekly work and frequently achieves what the longer arrangement does not, because it matches how fluency is built.

Should the stronger paper be revised at all in a short block?+

Barely, and that discomfort is the point. Where a mock split clearly identifies one paper as the problem, spreading eight sessions evenly across both produces small improvements in each and no visible change in either. Targeting the weak paper and deliberately leaving the strong one is what makes a short block move a number. The omission should be written down so the student follows the plan without guilt about it.

My child is in MYP and the grade looks fine. Is maths help premature?+

Not necessarily. MYP marks four criteria out of eight each and converts them by published boundaries, so a student can hold a respectable grade for two years while manipulation stays slow and nothing in the reporting shows it. A block at the end of MYP 4 leaves a full year to build fluency before the Analysis or Applications decision has to be made, which changes what that decision can be rather than only how it goes.

Send the paper marks, not the grade

For an IB maths tutor in DAMAC Hills, the most useful first message gives the route, the level and the individual paper marks rather than the overall grade, plus the earliest hour your child can start after the commute. The split between papers usually names the block immediately, and the plan that follows will include short daily work as well as sessions, because that is how fluency is actually built. The trial lesson is a full diagnostic session delivered live online in Gulf Standard Time.
