Edexcel IGCSE English Literature 4ET1 Tutor in Dubai

Most families look for an Edexcel IGCSE English Literature 4ET1 tutor in Dubai after one specific event: an essay comes back from school a grade below what everyone at home expected, with a comment about analysis rather than content. The reading was done. The marks were not. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, built around the set texts your child's Dubai school has actually chosen and the question styles Pearson actually sets.

Why a well-read Year 11 can still sit at grade 5 in 4ET1

English Literature is the subject where effort and outcome come apart most visibly. A student can finish every set text, highlight half the pages, sit down in the exam hall and still write an answer that earns a middling mark. Parents in Dubai see this and reasonably conclude that more reading is the answer. It rarely is. The reading is usually fine. What is missing is the particular kind of writing Pearson rewards, which almost nobody is taught explicitly and which has very little to do with liking books.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Literature carries the specification code 4ET1. Under the current specification it is assessed by written examination covering poetry, modern prose, modern drama and literary heritage texts, with a coursework route available at centres that choose to enter it instead of the second written paper. The live specification on qualifications.pearson.com gives the components, durations and weightings, and your child's head of English confirms which route the school has entered. That single question — which route — changes a revision plan completely, and a surprising number of families have never asked it.

What the examiner is paid to find is a student writing about how a writer has made something happen on the page. Not what happens in the story. Not how the poem made the reader feel. How the text is built, and what the building does. A sentence that says 'the writer uses a simile here' earns nothing on its own, because it describes the furniture rather than the room. A sentence that says what the comparison forces the reader to hold in mind at that exact moment in the scene is doing the work the mark scheme describes. The gap between those two sentences is most of the grade.

Dubai adds its own complications. Most of the city's British-curriculum schools run large Year 11 cohorts, which means English sets of twenty-five or more and an English teacher marking perhaps a hundred and fifty full essays a term. Detailed written feedback on every draft is arithmetically impossible, however good the department. A student who needs to see their own sentence rebuilt three times before the method sticks will not get that in class. They will get a grade, a comment and the next text. This is the specific hole that one-to-one tuition fills, and it is why the request usually arrives in January rather than September.

A 4ET1 tutor working properly spends the first session reading, not teaching. One timed essay on a text the student has already studied, marked against the published criteria, annotated so that the parent can see which sentences earned marks and which were simply true. From there the plan writes itself: a student losing marks on quotation handling needs a different term to one losing them on question focus or on running out of time on the second question. Both look like 'needs help with English' from the outside. They need opposite lessons.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

4ET1 sits inside a wider set of qualifications Dubai schools run at 16, and the route a student is on changes what a literature session has to do. These are the programmes that produce English Literature students in this city, and what each one means for tuition.

4ET1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Literature

The qualification this page is about, graded 9-1 and assessed by written examination on poetry, modern prose, modern drama and literary heritage texts. Centres may enter a coursework route in place of one written paper. The specification sets the texts available; each school picks its own combination, so two Dubai students sitting 4ET1 in the same series may share no text at all.

Dubai centres can enter either the May/June or the November series, and both are used here: November is where resits and private candidates cluster. Because the set texts are chosen school by school, the first thing a Dubai tutor establishes is the exact title list, including which anthology poems the department has prioritised. Guessing wastes a term.

4EA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A

The companion qualification most 4ET1 students sit alongside Literature. It tests reading of non-fiction and transactional and imaginative writing rather than textual analysis of set works. The skills overlap less than parents assume: a student can be comfortable in Language A and still write weak Literature answers, because the questions ask for different things.

In Dubai the two are usually timetabled with the same teacher, which is why a Literature problem often gets diagnosed as an English problem and treated with general writing practice. Separating them matters. A tutor who confirms which paper the marks are actually dropping on avoids a term of work on the wrong skill.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

IB Middle Years Programme, Years 4 and 5

The alternative route at 16 in Dubai's IB schools. MYP Language and Literature assesses against criteria A to D with no terminal written examination, so students arriving into a 4ET1 class from an MYP school meet timed closed-text essay writing for the first time quite late.

Dubai has enough mid-phase school moves that this transition shows up every year, usually as a strong reader who cannot finish in time. The fix is mechanical rather than literary: planning in four minutes, writing to a clock, and learning how much a hand can actually produce in the time the paper allows.

AS/AAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level English Literature and IB Diploma Language A

Where a 4ET1 student goes next if the subject continues. Both demand sustained independent argument across longer texts, and both assume the analytical habit 4ET1 is meant to establish. Students who reached grade 7 at 16 by memorising essays rather than writing them find the first term of either course unpleasant.

Most Dubai British-curriculum schools split at 16 into A Level or the IB Diploma, and the English choice is often made on which teacher the student liked. A session or two spent on what each course actually assesses is a better basis for that decision than a conversation at an options evening.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Families who come to us for 4ET1 usually ask about a second subject in the same conversation, because option blocks in Dubai schools cluster the essay subjects together. These are the Pearson codes most often requested alongside English Literature.

English Literature (4ET1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Poetry, modern prose, modern drama and literary heritage texts. Marks are lost on method rather than knowledge: feature-spotting instead of analysis, quotation dropped in rather than built into a sentence, and answers that describe the plot of a text the examiner already knows.

English Language A (4EA1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Non-fiction reading plus transactional and imaginative writing. The common failure is register: a student writes a competent essay when the question asked for a speech or a letter, and loses form marks that had nothing to do with the quality of the prose.

English Language B (4EB1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The route for students working in English as an additional language, with listening, reading and writing components. Used by several Dubai schools for recent arrivals. Tuition here is about accuracy and task completion rather than literary analysis.

History (4HI1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Source handling and extended writing on depth studies and investigations. Students who write strong Literature essays often transfer well, because both reward a claim supported by evidence that is then weighed rather than simply listed.

Geography (4GE1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Physical and human geography with fieldwork investigation. The written demand is shorter than Literature but the command words are stricter, and marks go missing when a student explains a process without ever naming the place the question specified.

Economics (4EC1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Microeconomics, business economics, macroeconomics and the global economy. The evaluation sentence at the end of the long question is worth more than the three paragraphs above it, and is the part students most often leave unwritten.

Business (4BS1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Enterprise, people, finance, marketing and operations, assessed through case-study stimulus. A strong Literature student usually reads the stimulus well, then forgets to use it, writing a general answer when the marks sit in applying theory to the firm described.

Mathematics A (4MA1)

Foundation and Higher tier

Tiered, which matters: the Foundation tier carries a grade ceiling, so the tier a Dubai school has entered a student for is worth confirming in Year 10 rather than discovering in Year 11.

Biology (4BI1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Two written papers with practical skills assessed in writing rather than in a lab. The extended-response questions reward structured explanation, which is exactly the habit a Literature tutor builds, applied to a different content set.

Chemistry (4CH1)

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Principles, inorganic, physical and organic chemistry across two papers. Requested alongside Literature by students keeping a science-plus-humanities mix open for A Level choices at 16.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

4ET1 does not need the same lesson every week for two years. These are the three shapes a literature course of study usually takes, and families move between them as the series approaches.

Weekly essay clinic

One hour a week through the teaching year, built around whatever the school is covering. The student writes a timed response between sessions; the tutor marks it against the published criteria before the lesson, and the hour is spent rebuilding three or four sentences rather than reading the text aloud. Progress is visible because the same essay improves in front of the parent.

  • One timed response written between sessions, marked before the lesson
  • Criteria shown next to the student's own sentence, not in the abstract
  • Set texts followed in the school's teaching order
  • A short written note to the parent after each session

Unseen poetry drill

A short block of four to six sessions dedicated to the unseen element, which is the part of 4ET1 students assume cannot be revised. It can. What is being trained is a procedure: a fixed reading order, a way of finding the shift in the poem, and three sentence patterns that work on any text. Students who have never scored well on unseen work usually move fastest here.

  • A repeatable twenty-minute reading procedure
  • Practice on poems from outside the anthology, unseen on the day
  • Sentence patterns that survive an unfamiliar poem
  • Timing practice against the clock the paper actually allows

Pre-series paper block

An intensive run in the weeks before a May/June or November series, usually two sessions a week. Full past papers under timed conditions, marked and returned, with the session spent on the question that went worst. The aim is narrow: stop the predictable losses, finish both questions, and leave nothing blank on the page.

  • Full timed papers rather than individual questions
  • Marking returned within forty-eight hours
  • Question-choice strategy for papers offering options
  • A final-fortnight plan the student can follow without a tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What 4ET1 actually asks a sixteen-year-old to do

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Literature asks for one thing in several costumes: an argument about how a text works, supported by evidence from the text, written under time pressure. Everything else on the paper is a variation on that. The poetry questions ask it about compressed language. The prose and drama questions ask it across a longer narrative. The unseen element asks it about a text the student has never read. The underlying demand does not change between them, which is why a student who learns it once tends to improve across the whole paper rather than in one section.

The demand is unusual because it is not a knowledge test. A student can know a novel intimately and score poorly, which feels unjust and is the source of most of the frustration families bring to a first session. The examiner is not checking whether the book was read. They are checking whether the student can take a specific choice the writer made — a word, a structural decision, a pattern of imagery across two chapters — and say what that choice does to a reader. Knowledge of the plot is the floor, not the answer.

This is also what makes the subject teachable in a way parents often doubt. Analysis is not a personality trait. It is a set of sentence moves that can be named, practised and checked. A student who writes 'this shows the character is lonely' can be taught, in about four sessions, to write 'the repetition of the same room across three chapters leaves the reader with nowhere else to look, which is the point the writer is making about her choices'. Same reading, same text, a different grade band. What changes is the shape of the sentence, and sentence shapes are learnable.

The final piece is time. The paper is written by hand under a clock, and a student who plans for twelve minutes writes a beautiful half-answer. In practice a great deal of the improvement in a 4ET1 course of study comes from timing discipline rather than literary insight: knowing how long the plan gets, how many paragraphs are realistic, and when to stop improving one point and move to the next. That is trained with a stopwatch, not a textbook.

02

The components, and what each one is really testing

Families do better when they stop thinking about 'the English exam' and start thinking about the components separately, because each fails differently. The poetry work tests close reading of compressed language and, in the anthology element, the ability to hold two texts side by side without writing two separate essays. The modern prose and modern drama work tests sustained argument across a long text, where the risk is drifting into narrative. The literary heritage element adds older language, which creates a comprehension tax before any analysis can start.

The coursework route matters here. Some centres enter it in place of a written paper, and the experience is entirely different: extended writing produced over weeks, with the school marking against the published criteria. If your child's school has taken that route, a tutor's work is bounded by academic honesty rules that are not negotiable. Feedback on a draft the student has produced is legitimate and useful. Anything beyond that is not, and no reputable tutor will cross that line. Confirm the route with the head of English before planning a term.

The table below sets out the components as a parent needs to understand them — what the student is looking at, what earns marks, and the failure mode each one produces. The exact durations and weightings are published on the current specification at qualifications.pearson.com, and that document is the authority, not this page or any tutor's recollection of a previous version.

One practical note on texts. Because schools choose their own combination from the specification, two Dubai students both sitting 4ET1 in the same series can have no text in common. Any tutor who begins by assuming a text list is guessing. The first email should ask for the exact titles, the anthology poems the department has prioritised, and the entry route.

03

Unseen poetry: the part students believe cannot be revised

  • Read once for sense with no pen in hand
  • Mark only the shift and three words that would be odd in speech
  • One sentence on what the poem is doing, before any paragraph is written
  • Three paragraphs, each answering 'so what' about one observation
  • A closing sentence on the shape of the whole poem

Ask a Year 11 in Dubai which part of the Literature paper worries them and the unseen poem comes up first. The logic seems sound: you cannot revise a text you have not seen. The conclusion is wrong, because what is being assessed is not familiarity with a poem. It is a method, and methods are revisable. A student who has practised the same procedure on thirty unfamiliar poems walks into that question with something to do in the first ninety seconds, which is the whole game.

The procedure we teach is deliberately unglamorous. Read the poem once for sense, without a pen. Read it again marking only two things: where the poem changes direction, and the three words that would be odd in ordinary speech. Write one sentence saying what the poem is doing — not what it is about. Then build three paragraphs, each taking one of those odd words or the shift and saying what it does to the reader. Finish with a sentence on the shape of the whole poem. That is it. It fits in the time the paper allows, and it produces an answer with an argument in it.

What this replaces is the feature hunt. Left to themselves, students who have been taught to identify devices will list them: alliteration here, enjambment there, a metaphor in line six. Each observation is true and each is worth nothing, because the mark scheme asks for effect. Training the procedure breaks the habit by never giving the student a chance to list; the structure forces them to answer 'so what' every time they name something.

Four to six sessions is usually enough to change the score on this element, which makes it the highest-return block in a 4ET1 course of study. We practise on poems from outside the anthology, genuinely unseen on the day, because practising on a poem the student has already discussed teaches nothing about the actual task. Parents often notice the change here before they see it anywhere else on the paper.

04

The four sentence types, and what band each one reads as

The fastest diagnostic available on a 4ET1 script is to ignore the content and classify the sentences. Students write in recognisable patterns, and each pattern sits in a band almost regardless of which text is being discussed. Once a parent can see those patterns in their own child's writing, the grade stops being mysterious and becomes a list of specific habits to replace. This is the single most useful thing we show families in a first session.

The lowest band is narration: the student tells the examiner what happens. The next is identification: the student names a technique and stops. Above that sits explanation, where the student says what the technique does, usually in general terms. The top band is the sentence that ties a specific choice to a specific effect at a specific moment, and then does something with it — pushes the point, qualifies it, or connects it to a pattern elsewhere in the text. Most students live in bands two and three and believe they are being asked to write more. They are being asked to write differently.

Rebuilding is done one sentence at a time, out loud, with the student's own writing on screen. We take a sentence they produced, name which pattern it is, and rewrite it together into the next pattern up. Three or four of those in an hour is a productive session. After about six weeks the student starts catching the pattern themselves mid-sentence, which is the point at which tuition starts to become unnecessary.

The table below is the version we share with parents. It is not a mark scheme and it is not a substitute for the published criteria, which are on the Pearson specification. It is a reading aid: a way to look at a page of your child's writing and see what the examiner will see.

FOUR SENTENCE PATTERNS ON A 4ET1 SCRIPT — A PARENT'S READING AID, NOT A MARK SCHEME
PatternWhat it sounds likeWhat the examiner seesThe rebuild
Narration'Then she leaves the house and goes to the station.'Plot recall; no credit for retelling a known textReplace the event with the choice: why that detail, in those words
Identification'The writer uses a simile here.'A label with nothing attached to itAdd the effect clause: what the comparison makes the reader hold in mind
General explanation'This shows she is sad and makes the reader feel sorry.'Effect stated, but generic enough to fit any textAnchor it to this moment and this word, not to sadness in general
Specific, developed analysis'The same room returns in three chapters, so by the third the reader has nowhere else to look either.'A specific choice tied to a specific effect, then pushed furtherKeep it, and ask what else in the text behaves the same way
05

Where 4ET1 marks actually disappear, in order of frequency

  • Question focus: underline the two constraining words before planning
  • Embedded quotation of two or three words, never a copied line
  • A hard stop per question, practised with a clock on screen
  • A four-minute closing paragraph rehearsed until it is automatic
  • Nothing left blank: a partial answer outscores an unwritten one

Across scripts, the losses cluster in a small number of places, and they are not the places students expect. Vocabulary is rarely the problem. Handwriting almost never is. The big three are question focus, quotation handling and time management, in roughly that order, and all three are mechanical faults with mechanical fixes.

Question focus means answering the question asked rather than the question revised for. A student who has prepared an essay on a theme will produce that essay whatever the paper says, bending the first and last paragraphs to fit. Examiners see this constantly and credit only what addresses the task. The fix is a thirty-second habit: underline the two words in the question that constrain the answer, and write them at the top of the plan. If a paragraph does not touch those words, it does not go in.

Quotation handling is the second. Students are told to use quotations and so they do, dropped in whole lines at a time, parked at the end of a sentence with a colon in front of them. A long quotation costs time to copy and earns nothing extra. Short embedded quotation — two or three words inside the student's own sentence — is faster, reads better and lets the analysis sit next to the evidence. Converting a student from block quoting to embedding often buys five or six minutes on the paper, which is a paragraph.

Time management is the third and the most expensive. A student who writes brilliantly for forty minutes and leaves the second question half-finished loses more marks than any analytical weakness would cost them. We time everything, we practise stopping mid-point when the clock says stop, and we rehearse the unglamorous skill of writing a serviceable final paragraph in four minutes. None of this is literary. All of it is marks.

What English Literature tutoring costs in Dubai, in dirhams

Published prices are scarce in this market, which is strange given how much Dubai families spend on tuition. Several of the agencies ranking for these searches quote no figure at all, and two quote in US dollars. The figures below are market rates gathered from providers' own published pricing and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table. They are the market, not an IB Gram price list, and they are included so that a parent can tell whether a quote they have been given is normal.

At the budget end, online tutoring from university students and non-specialist teachers runs from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour: EdFlik publishes rates from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject teacher working online sits between about AED 150 and AED 300, with Unitors advertising IGCSE tuition from AED 150. An in-home visit, travel included, is commonly AED 180 to AED 500; Bestimate's band is AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors in Dubai reach AED 500. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tutors run AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. At the top, BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor.

For English Literature specifically there is a hidden variable the rate card does not show: marking. A literature tutor who marks a full timed essay properly spends thirty to forty minutes on it outside the lesson. If that work is included in the hourly rate, the effective cost per hour of the tutor's time is considerably lower than the headline. If it is not included, a parent paying AED 250 an hour for conversation about a text is buying the least valuable part of the service. Ask the question directly before booking: is written marking of timed essays included, and how quickly does it come back?

Context helps too. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. For a family already carrying fees for two or three children, the tuition decision is usually about how few hours can be made to work rather than how many can be afforded. One well-marked hour a week through Years 10 and 11 beats four unmarked hours in April.

Counting backwards from the Pearson series

Nobody in this market writes about the calendar, which is odd, because the calendar is what decides whether tuition starting in February is useful or decorative. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations are available in May/June and in November each year, and Dubai centres use both. The November series is where resit candidates and private candidates cluster, and its entry deadline falls months before the papers are sat.

The published dates worth knowing are these. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, including the provisional version for the next November sitting, and those provisional documents can be revised in the months that follow — which is exactly why any date on a tutoring page should be read as a prompt to check the live timetable at qualifications.pearson.com rather than as gospel.

Working backwards from a series produces a plan that looks nothing like 'start tutoring soon'. Set texts need to be finished with reading time to spare, because analysis cannot start while the student is still discovering the ending. Timed essays need to begin early enough that the student has written a dozen before the mocks, not after them. Question-choice strategy is a late job, useful in the final six weeks and wasted in September. And a student considering a November resit needs the entry conversation with the school's exams officer long before the summer results arrive, because the deadline will not wait for a change of mind.

The table sets out the shape of a year for a 4ET1 candidate in Dubai. Dates specific to your child's series come from the school's exams officer and from the live Pearson timetable; the sequence below is the part that does not change.

Academic honesty, and the line a 4ET1 tutor holds

English Literature is the subject where the honesty question is sharpest, because the assessed product is writing and writing can be supplied. One operator in this market sells finished assessed work outright. That is not a service with risks attached; it is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, whose qualification can be withdrawn. A family paying for it is buying an exposure, not a grade.

The line is simple to state and easy to hold. A tutor may teach the method, discuss a text, question an argument, mark a timed essay against the published criteria and explain why a sentence scored what it scored. A tutor may read a draft the student has produced and say where the argument is thin. What a tutor may not do is supply the sentences that end up on an assessed script. Where a school has entered the coursework route, the school's own rules on outside help are the binding ones and they should be read before tuition starts.

This boundary also happens to be where the teaching actually lives. A sentence handed to a student teaches nothing, because the student cannot generate the next one. A sentence the student rebuilds themselves, with the pattern named out loud, transfers to the next question and the one after. The honest method is the effective method, which makes the choice less agonising than it looks.

The same rule governs materials. Pearson's specifications, past papers and mark schemes are published documents and we cite and link them; we do not reproduce or redistribute them, and a tutor offering a private library of unreleased papers is a reason to walk away rather than a selling point.

09

Why the search says tutor in Dubai and the lesson happens on video

Parents in Dubai search for a tutor in Dubai, and the honest answer deserves stating plainly rather than buried. IB Gram delivers 4ET1 tuition to Dubai families one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. We do not make home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Nobody will be arriving at a Dubai address, and any page that implies otherwise is worth reading twice.

For a literature subject the online format is unusually well suited, which is not true of every subject. The work is text on a screen: the student's essay, the examiner's criteria, the poem. A tutor can annotate a student's own paragraph live, in colour, while the student watches the sentence change — something that is harder to do side by side at a kitchen table with one piece of paper between two people. Marked scripts arrive as files the parent can open and keep, which is a better record than a verbal summary at the door.

There is a second argument, and it is the stronger one. A family in Mirdif choosing from tutors willing to drive to Mirdif on a Tuesday is choosing from a short list defined by geography. A family choosing online is choosing from English specialists who have taught the 4ET1 specification, whichever city they live in. For a niche code and a specific set-text combination, that difference is the whole point. Travel time also disappears: no fee carries a thirty-minute drive through Al Khail Road at 5pm, and a cancelled session is rescheduled rather than lost.

On the legal side, families should know that private tutoring in the UAE operates under a permit regime. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you. The official route is MoHRE's own service page for private tutor licensing, and ADEK's professional-ethics rules separately bar Abu Dhabi school staff from tutoring students enrolled at their own school.

Equivalency, option blocks and what Literature is for afterwards

Two questions come up once the immediate grade problem is in hand: does this subject count, and does it lead anywhere. Both have concrete answers in the UAE context, and neither is answered well by the pages currently ranking for these searches.

On equivalency, the UAE Ministry of Education's British-track requirements were clarified publicly in 2026: a student must pass five subjects recognised at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and must show either one subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. English Literature can sit inside that five, which is worth knowing for a family weighing whether to drop it. One competing page in this market states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced figure is five. Equivalency is a Ministry process, not something a tutoring service performs or guarantees, and the authority on it is moe.gov.ae and the emirate's attestation channel.

On where it leads, Literature is one of the few subjects at 16 that is explicitly about handling argument and evidence in prose, which is why it keeps showing up as a preferred subject for law, journalism, politics and international relations. It is also the subject most often dropped at 16 by students who could have done well in it, because a middling IGCSE grade reads as a verdict on ability when it is usually a verdict on method. A student sitting at a 5 because they narrate rather than analyse is not bad at Literature. They have not been shown the sentence yet.

Separately, families should expect the mandatory UAE subjects to run alongside whatever curriculum their school is licensed for. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of curriculum, KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. That is timetable arithmetic a family should factor in when deciding how many tuition hours an already full week can carry.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Dubai is spread out and the school run defines the evening. Where a family lives decides what time a weekly 4ET1 session can realistically start, which is why the areas below are described by their timetable rather than their postcode.

Jumeirah and Al Safa

Dense with long-established British schools, so students here often study the same set texts as a friend two streets away. Sessions usually land at 4.30pm or 5pm because the journey home is short.

Umm Suqeim and Al Manara

Villa communities feeding the Jumeirah school cluster. Families here frequently run two or three activities an evening, so a fixed weekly slot protected across the term works better than flexible booking.

Al Barsha and Tecom

Apartment and villa mix with several large Year 11 cohorts nearby. The practical constraint is a shared study space, so a 7pm start after siblings have eaten is more common than a 5pm one.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer schools and newer families, with a high proportion of mid-phase arrivals who joined a 4ET1 course after the set texts were introduced. Catching up on a text already taught is the usual starting brief here.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Served by schools towards Academic City and Mizhar, with longer bus journeys at both ends of the day. A 6.30pm start is realistic; a 4.30pm one usually is not during term.

Arabian Ranches and The Springs

Suburban villa communities where Year 11 students are often back by 4pm but training in the evening. Weekend morning sessions are requested more here than anywhere else in the city.

Business Bay and Downtown

High-rise living with students travelling out to schools in Jumeirah or Al Barsha. Traffic on the return leg is the variable, so a 10-minute grace window on the start time saves a weekly argument.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim

The oldest British-curriculum cluster in Dubai, with large Year 11 cohorts and English departments that have taught the same anthology selection for several series. Students here benefit most from a tutor who works from the department's own text list rather than the full specification menu.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai College
  • Kings' School Dubai
  • Safa British School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School

Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Jumeirah Park

A newer belt of schools where cohorts have grown quickly and where mid-year admissions are common. The recurring 4ET1 brief here is a student who has joined after a set text was finished and needs it rebuilt in six weeks without losing ground on the current one.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Repton Al Barsha

Mirdif, Academic City and Silicon Oasis

Schools serving the eastern communities, with longer commutes and later realistic session times. Several run both Pearson and Cambridge codes across different subjects, so confirming which board applies to English specifically is worth a phone call before tuition begins.

  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Dubai Gem Private School

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai market only. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or commercial relationship with any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the code, the texts and the entry route

The first message should carry four facts: Pearson 4ET1, the exact set texts the school has chosen, which anthology poems the department has prioritised, and whether the school has entered the coursework route. With those, matching takes hours. Without them, the first session is spent finding out.

  2. 02

A trial lesson at no charge

Thirty minutes, no card details taken and no obligation to continue. The student brings a recent piece of marked writing if there is one. The tutor spends most of it reading rather than talking, because the diagnosis matters more than the pitch at this stage.

  3. 03

    A marked baseline essay

One timed response on a text already studied, written under exam conditions and returned annotated against the published criteria. This is the document everything else is planned from, and the one parents find most useful. It usually confirms that the problem is narrower than feared.

  4. 04

A weekly slot held across the term

A fixed hour on Gulf Standard Time, chosen around the school run and the family's evening. A timed essay is written between sessions and marked before the lesson, so the hour itself is spent rebuilding sentences rather than reading aloud.

  5. 05

Review at week six, and again before the series

Two scheduled checks. At six weeks we compare the baseline script with a current one and decide whether the plan or the tutor should change. Before the series we move to full timed papers and a final-fortnight plan the student can run without a tutor.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One syllabus, not a general English service

Tutors on this page teach Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Literature at Years 10 and 11. The specification code, the component structure and the question styles are the working material, not a generic reading and writing course repackaged for a search term.

Marking is the service, not an extra

A literature hour without marked writing in it is a conversation. Timed essays are marked against the published criteria outside the lesson and returned annotated, and the lesson is spent on the sentences that lost marks. Parents see the scripts rather than a summary.

The school's text list, not the specification menu

Schools choose their own combination from the specification, so two Dubai students sitting 4ET1 can share no text. Teaching starts from the department's actual titles and the anthology poems it has prioritised, which is why the first email asks for them.

The honesty line is stated, not implied

A tutor teaches the method, questions the argument and marks the work. The sentences on an assessed script are the student's own, and where a school has entered the coursework route its rules on outside help are the binding ones. This is said plainly because one operator in this market does not.

Figures are attributed and dated

Every AED band on this page is a market rate published by a named provider or taken from Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table, with the source stated. Regulatory points cite u.ae, KHDA, MoHRE or Pearson. Nothing here is an invented statistic about our own students.

Delivery is disclosed before you ask

Lessons happen one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not make home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Knowing this before a call is worth more than discovering it after a deposit.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does Edexcel IGCSE English Literature 4ET1 actually examine?+

Under the current specification, 4ET1 assesses close reading and extended writing across poetry, modern prose, modern drama and literary heritage texts, including a poem the student has not seen before. Centres may also enter a coursework route in place of one written paper. What is being tested is not knowledge of the books but the ability to take a specific choice a writer made and say what it does to a reader, in writing, under time pressure. The durations and weightings are published on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com, and your child's head of English confirms which route the school entered.

Which set texts does my child's Dubai school teach for 4ET1?+

Only the school can tell you, and the answer varies from one Dubai school to the next. The specification offers a menu of texts and each English department chooses its own combination, so two students sitting the same series can have no title in common. Email the head of English for the exact list, including which anthology poems the department has prioritised and whether the coursework route has been entered. A tutor who starts without that list is guessing, and a term spent on the wrong novel is a term gone. We ask for it before matching.

Is there an unseen poetry question in 4ET1, and can it be prepared for?+

Yes to both. The unseen element gives the student a poem they have never read, which makes it feel unrevisable. What is actually assessed is a method, and methods are revisable. We train a fixed procedure: read once for sense, mark the shift and three words that would be odd in speech, write one sentence on what the poem is doing, then three paragraphs each saying what one observation does to a reader. Four to six sessions on unfamiliar poems usually moves this score more than any other block, because most students arrive with no procedure at all.

How many quotations does my child need to memorise for 4ET1?+

Fewer than most students think, and shorter. Long memorised quotations cost time to write out and earn nothing extra. What works is a bank of two or three word fragments per text, chosen because something in the wording can be analysed rather than because the line is famous. Fifteen well-chosen fragments across a text beats forty long ones. Confirm with the school whether the examination is sat with texts available or without, because that changes the preparation entirely, and it is one of the questions families most often forget to ask.

My child writes plot summary instead of analysis. How is that corrected?+

By rebuilding sentences one at a time, out loud, using the student's own writing. We take a narrating sentence, name the pattern, and rewrite it together into the next pattern up: from what happens, to what the writer chose, to what that choice does to a reader at that moment. Three or four rebuilds in an hour is a productive session. After roughly six weeks students start catching themselves mid-sentence, which is the point at which the habit has transferred. Telling a student to analyse more does not work, because they do not yet have the sentence shape.

Does 4ET1 have a coursework option instead of a second written paper?+

The specification allows centres to enter a coursework route in place of one written paper, and some Dubai schools do. The experience differs completely: extended writing produced over weeks and marked by the school rather than an essay written in an exam hall. If your school has taken that route, read its rules on outside help before tuition starts, because they bind what a tutor may do. Feedback on a draft the student has produced is legitimate. Supplying sentences for an assessed script is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student.

Are 4ET1 exams open book or closed book?+

This depends on the component and on the current specification, so it should be confirmed with the school's exams officer rather than assumed from an older version of the course or from a sibling's experience three years ago. The answer changes preparation substantially: a closed assessment puts weight on short memorised fragments, while an available text shifts the pressure onto finding evidence quickly under time limits. Either way the analytical demand is identical, and the published specification at qualifications.pearson.com is the authority on the arrangements for your child's series.

Can a tutor mark my child's 4ET1 practice essays against the real criteria?+

Yes, and this is the part of the service worth paying for. Pearson publishes its assessment criteria, and a timed essay marked against them with annotations on the script tells a parent far more than a grade does. Expect the marking to happen outside the lesson, which takes thirty to forty minutes per full essay, and expect the script back before the next session so the hour can be spent on the sentences that lost marks. Ask any tutor directly whether written marking is inside the hourly rate before you book.

What does an Edexcel IGCSE English Literature tutor charge per hour in Dubai?+

Market rates in Dubai run roughly AED 45 to 150 for budget online tutoring, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject teacher online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit including travel, and AED 200 to 450 or more for a subject specialist. Those bands come from providers' own published pricing and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. For Literature, ask the question behind the rate: whether full timed-essay marking is included. An unmarked hour of discussion at AED 250 is the least useful thing you can buy in this subject.

My child reads very slowly. Does that matter for English Literature?+

It matters for the unseen element and for the time budget, less for the set texts, which are read over months. Slow reading becomes expensive when a student spends eight minutes decoding an unfamiliar poem and has twelve left to write. The fix is procedural rather than remedial: a fixed reading order, a decision made at a fixed point, and practice against a clock. If the underlying difficulty looks like a specific learning need rather than habit, that is a conversation for the school, which can advise on access arrangements through the exams officer.

Is Edexcel English Literature 4ET1 harder than English Language A 4EA1?+

Different rather than harder, and students are often strong in one and weak in the other. Language A rewards handling non-fiction and writing in a given form for a given audience; Literature rewards sustained argument about how a text is built. Because the same teacher usually takes both in Dubai schools, a Literature problem frequently gets treated as a general English problem and answered with more writing practice. Separating the two before planning a term is worth doing, and a marked baseline essay in each makes the diagnosis obvious within a week.

When are Pearson English Literature entries due for the November series?+

Entry deadlines sit months before the papers and are handled by your school's exams officer, not by a tutor. What is published is the shape of the year: Pearson International GCSE examinations are available in May/June and November, and the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. Pearson also issues provisional timetables ahead of each series, and those can be revised, so check the live timetable at qualifications.pearson.com. If a November resit is a possibility, raise it with the exams officer before summer results arrive.

Does English Literature count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track, the Ministry's clarified requirement is five subjects recognised at GCSE or IGCSE at grade E or 3 or better, plus one Advanced Level at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary Levels at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five, and English Literature can sit inside them. One page ranking in this market states six subjects are needed; the sourced figure is five. Equivalency is a Ministry process we describe but never perform or guarantee, so verify on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation channel.

Are 4ET1 lessons in Dubai delivered online or at our address?+

Online, one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not make home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For Literature this suits the work: the student's essay and the criteria sit on screen together, a paragraph can be annotated live while the student watches it change, and marked scripts arrive as files you keep. It also means the choice of tutor is made on 4ET1 experience rather than on who is willing to drive to your community.

How long should a 4ET1 essay be in the exam?+

Length is the wrong target. What matters is a clear argument, developed across a realistic number of paragraphs, finished inside the time the question allows. Most students who ask this are writing long and finishing late, which costs more than a short complete answer ever does. We work out with each student how much they can physically write in the time, then build a plan to that size: a short plan, three or four developed paragraphs, and a closing sentence that is rehearsed until it takes four minutes. Nothing is left blank.

Start with one marked essay, not a package

If you are weighing up an Edexcel IGCSE English Literature 4ET1 tutor in Dubai, the cheapest useful first step is a single marked baseline essay. One timed response on a text your child has already studied, annotated against the published criteria, tells you whether the problem is question focus, quotation handling, timing or something else entirely. That diagnosis usually makes the plan smaller than expected. Send us the specification code, the set texts and the entry route, take a trial lesson at no charge with no card details required, and decide afterwards. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
