Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 Online Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 online tutor in Dubai should be measurable. Four weeks in, you should be holding marked work in your child's own hand, a count of lost marks sorted by cause, and a plan with the June series written on it. This page is about that evidence: what should exist, how to read it, and how to audit a tutor in three weeks rather than three terms. Sessions run one-to-one on live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • Six causes a lost mark can have, counted and reported from your child's own script
  • Work comes back annotated in your child's handwriting, not described to you
  • A three-line note after every session: taught, mastered, still wrong
  • Progress is reviewed against the school's next marked assessment, not ours

What should be on your kitchen table after four weeks

Most tutoring is bought and judged on impression. The child seems happier about maths. The tutor is pleasant and arrives on time. The hour passes productively. Four months later a mock comes back and nothing has moved, and nobody can say why, because nothing was ever written down that could be compared with anything else. That is not a failure of the tutor's ability; it is a failure to generate evidence, and in a subject examined once at the end of two years it is expensive.

So this page starts from the opposite end. Here is what should physically exist after four weeks of 0580 support. Your child's most recent marked school script. A written breakdown of the marks lost on it, sorted into six causes rather than into topics. Two or three pieces of exam-style work in your child's own handwriting, annotated by the tutor to show where a method mark was available and where an accuracy mark went. Three or four short session notes saying what was taught, what your child could do unaided by the end, and what was still wrong. And a plan with dates, including the date of the next school assessment it will be judged against.

The reason to sort losses by cause rather than by topic is that the causes need completely different responses, and the topic tells you almost nothing. A student who lost eleven marks across mensuration, trigonometry and statistics has not got three problems. They may have one: they round halfway through and their final answers fall outside the accepted range. That is one or two sessions of work. The same eleven marks lost because the content was never understood is three to eight sessions per topic area. Identical topic lists, wildly different plans, and the only document that distinguishes them is the script.

Online delivery turns out to help with exactly this, which is not the usual argument made for it. A video session is a session where everything is already on a screen, so annotation is native, the marked work exists as a file rather than a photograph in a bag, and the record accumulates automatically. A parent who wants to read what happened in week two can read it in week nine. That is harder to produce when a tutor writes on loose paper at the kitchen table and takes the paper away.

This page covers what online actually changes about teaching 0580, the evidence pack in detail, how to read a marked script yourself, what a term looks like week by week, what mark movement honestly looks like and why nobody can promise a grade, how to audit a tutor in three weeks, the technology that matters and the kit that does not, and where online genuinely loses. Lessons for UAE families are one-to-one on live video in Gulf Standard Time; we do not offer home visits in the UAE, as that is a service we run only in India.

At a glance

  • Sort lost marks by cause, not by topic; the causes need different plans
  • Expect annotated work in your child's own handwriting, not a verbal summary
  • Expect a three-line note after every session and a review date with a school assessment on it
  • Online delivery makes the record accumulate automatically rather than disappearing into a bag
  • No tutor can promise a grade; mark movement on marked scripts is what can honestly be shown
  • Audit in week three using the questions in this page's audit table

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What counts as evidence of progress changes with the level, because what is assessed changes. These are the levels a Dubai maths enquiry spans and the measurable that matters at each.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Two written papers at the end of the course, nothing internally assessed, so the only honest measure of progress is performance on exam-style questions under time. That makes the measurable unusually clean: marks on a marked script, sorted by cause, compared with the same count a term earlier. Topic coverage is not a measure, because a student can cover every topic and still lose the same eleven marks to rounding.

Dubai schools typically run mocks in November and again in February or March, which gives a family two independently produced measurement points inside Year 11. Those two documents, placed side by side, are worth more than any tutor's own assessment, because the school produced them and had no interest in the answer.

IGCSE+Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Measured the same way and harder to fake, because the content reaches into differentiation, integration, kinematics and series. A student who can produce a correct derivative under time has demonstrated something specific; a student who nods along to a worked example has not. The evidence that matters here is unaided work on unseen questions rather than annotated examples.

Because 0606 is offered by only some Dubai schools and usually only to a set, a student taking it is often the only one in their friendship group doing so. That isolation is itself a reason to generate written evidence: there is nobody to compare against informally, so the marked script is the only reference point available.

AS/AAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics

The measurable shifts towards algebraic fluency, because the new content assumes it rather than teaching it. Progress at this level shows up as speed and accuracy on routine manipulation, not as understanding of new topics. A student who understands differentiation and takes four minutes to rearrange a formula will not cope with the paper, and that is visible on a timed script long before it is visible on a report.

In Dubai the first-term collapse in sixth-form mathematics is common enough to be predictable, and it almost always traces back to Extended-level algebra that was never automatic. Families who keep their Year 11 marked scripts have the diagnostic already in hand when it happens.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation

Adds an internally assessed exploration, which is the one place at this level where progress is visible as a draft rather than as a mark. The honest evidence is the student's own successive drafts with the tutor's questions in the margin, never edits. Written papers are measured as at every other level: timed scripts, marked, with losses sorted by cause.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, so more Year 11 students in the emirate will face the Diploma route decision. The algebra evidence from a 0580 script is the single most useful input into whether Analysis and Approaches is realistic.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

There are at least eleven maths routes running in Dubai Year 11 and sixth-form classrooms, and advice does not transfer between them. This is the grid, with what counts as evidence of progress on each.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Core

Papers 1 and 3, grades C to G

Progress shows as completed papers rather than as harder questions answered. A Core candidate loses most marks by leaving things blank or running out of time, so the measurable is the proportion of the paper attempted with visible method, tracked across three timed scripts.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended

Papers 2 and 4, grades A* to E

The measurable is multi-step questions carried to completion, because the longer paper is built from questions that chain three topics. A student who scores well on single-topic practice and poorly on a full paper has a chaining problem, which is visible only on a timed script.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0980

Same content, reported 9 to 1

Identical teaching and identical evidence; only the grade labels differ. Worth knowing because a sixth form may state its entry requirement in one scale while the certificate arrives in the other, which causes avoidable confusion in a Dubai application cycle.

Cambridge International Mathematics 0607

Core and Extended

A different syllabus with its own structure, a graphics calculator expectation and an investigative element, often chosen by schools running the IB continuum. Evidence of progress includes calculator fluency, which does not appear at all in 0580 preparation. A student revising 0580 papers for an 0607 entry is measuring the wrong thing.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Grades A* to E

The only IGCSE-level course that teaches calculus, alongside logarithms, series, kinematics and vectors. Evidence here is unaided work on unseen questions: following a worked example proves nothing about whether a derivative can be produced under time pressure.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1, Foundation

Foundation tier

A different board with a different paper structure and different tier labels. Progress is measured the same way but against Pearson's own past material, and the command vocabulary differs enough that cross-board practice teaches slightly wrong habits.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1, Higher

Higher tier

The Pearson equivalent of Extended, widely used across Dubai schools. The evidence discipline is identical: timed scripts, losses sorted by cause, compared term to term. Match every past paper and revision guide to the board on the statement of entry.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1

Single tier

Pearson's calculus-bearing option at this level, the counterpart to Cambridge's Additional Mathematics. Scarce teaching supply in Dubai, so a family needing it should start looking early rather than assuming availability in the spring.

Cambridge International AS Level Mathematics

First sixth-form year

Progress is measured in algebraic speed as much as in content. A timed script where the manipulation is slow but correct predicts a difficult A2 year, and that is actionable in October rather than in June.

IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Assumes Extended-level fluency and extends into proof and calculus. The internally assessed exploration is evidenced by the student's own successive drafts with questions in the margin. A tutor's edits in the document are not evidence of progress; they are a problem.

IB Diploma Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Modelling-led and statistics-heavy, with technology use assumed throughout. Progress evidence includes interpreting output and justifying a model choice in writing, which is a different skill from computing an answer and needs separately marked work.

Examination Technique as a Measurable

All of the above

Not a route, and the most measurable thing on the list. Count the marks lost to invisible working, rounding, misread command words and running out of time on one script, then count them again on the next. That number moving is the cleanest evidence of progress available anywhere in mathematics.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each of these arrangements produces a different kind of evidence, which is the right basis for choosing between them.

Weekly teaching session with marked work between

One hour a week on live video, with exam-style questions set afterwards and returned annotated before the next session. The evidence this produces is a growing file of work in your child's handwriting with the tutor's marks on it, which is the only record that shows what your child can do unaided rather than with help beside them.

  • Same tutor and slot in Gulf Standard Time
  • Work set every session and marked before the next
  • A three-line note each week: taught, mastered, still wrong
  • Everything accumulates as files rather than loose paper

Fortnightly timed paper with a marking session

A weekend slot where a full paper is sat at correct duration under the right calculator rules, then marked line by line in the following session. This is the only arrangement that tests timing, and timing is a top-three cause of lost marks for Dubai Extended candidates. The output is a dated script you can compare with the next one.

  • Correct duration, correct calculator rules, no interruptions
  • Marked with method marks identified line by line
  • Losses sorted into the six causes and counted
  • Dated, so a term later the comparison is real rather than remembered

A short diagnostic engagement, four sessions

For families who want evidence before committing to anything. Four sessions: one reading the marked script, two teaching the top cause, one setting and reviewing a timed section. It ends with a written assessment of what the real problem is and how long it takes, which you can act on with us or with anybody else.

  • Fixed at four sessions with a stated output
  • Produces a loss breakdown you can take anywhere
  • No renewal pressure and no automatic continuation
  • Useful even if the conclusion is that tutoring is not the answer

Continuity across travel

A schedule that follows the student rather than the address, which is a routine requirement in Dubai and genuinely only possible on video. Sessions continue from another timezone at an adjusted time, the work and the notes stay in one place, and a fortnight away stops being a fortnight lost in the middle of an examination year.

  • Session times adjusted to the student's current timezone
  • Same tutor and same plan across the trip
  • Work set and marked as normal while travelling
  • No cancellation charge for a timezone change agreed in advance

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What online actually changes about teaching 0580, and what it does not

A Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580 online tutor in Dubai teaches on live video, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time. The honest description of what that changes is narrower than either the advocates or the sceptics claim, and it is worth being specific because the generalities are useless.

What genuinely changes for the better is the record. In a video session the working appears on a shared surface, so annotation is native rather than something a tutor has to remember to photograph. A script your child wrote on paper can be captured with a phone and marked on screen in front of them, with the marks saved rather than carried away in a bag. Over a term that accumulates into a file you can actually read, which is the difference between knowing progress happened and believing it did. Every claim on this page about evidence depends on that property.

What also changes is who is available. The pool of people who can teach the 0580 specification well and are willing to drive to a given Dubai community at 5pm on a Tuesday is small and arbitrary. The pool who can teach it on video is the whole pool, and matching can be done on what matters, which is whether they have taught this specification and this tier. For a scarce requirement, such as Additional Mathematics or a student who needs a particular approach, that difference is decisive rather than marginal.

What does not change is the mathematics, the amount of work a student has to do between sessions, or the fact that a fifteen-year-old who will not engage with the subject cannot be made to by any delivery method. Video is a channel. It makes a good session easier to evidence and a bad session easier to drift through, because nobody is physically present to notice a student scrolling. That risk is real and the countermeasure is the same as the evidence discipline: written work in the student's own hand, every week, marked. A student who is not working cannot produce it, and that shows up in week two rather than in March.

02

The evidence pack: what should exist by week four

This is the table to hold a provider against, including us. Each row is an artefact rather than an impression, and the final column is what its absence tells you. If three or more of these do not exist after a month of paid sessions, the hours may still have been pleasant and you have no way to know whether they worked.

The first row is not produced by the tutor at all, and that is the point. Your child's school marks mocks and class assessments with no interest in whether tutoring is working, which makes those documents the only genuinely independent measurement in the whole arrangement. A provider who proposes to measure progress exclusively against their own assessments is grading their own homework. Ask instead which school assessment the plan will be judged against, and put the date in your calendar.

The second row is the one almost nobody produces, and it is the highest-value document in the pack. A loss breakdown takes the marked script and sorts every lost mark into one of six causes: not known, known but misapplied, arithmetic slip, rounding or accuracy, misread command word, ran out of time. The counts matter more than the total. Eleven marks lost to rounding is one or two sessions of work. Eleven marks lost because three topics were never understood is most of a term. A plan built without that distinction is a guess dressed as a schedule.

The fifth row is the one families skip and then regret. Timed practice under correct conditions is the only way to test timing, and running out of time is consistently among the largest causes of lost marks for Extended candidates, because Paper 4 is built from multi-step questions that reward persistence and punish hesitation. A student who has never sat a full paper at correct duration will discover their pace in the examination hall, which is the worst available place to discover it.

03

Reading a marked script yourself: the six causes of a lost mark

You do not need to be a mathematician to read a marked 0580 script usefully. You need to be able to sort the losses, and the sorting is a judgement about the page rather than about the mathematics. Half an hour with the script and the table below will tell you more about what your child needs than any conversation with any provider.

Work through the paper question by question and put each lost mark into one box. Blank or an attempt unrelated to the topic is not known. Correct method applied to the wrong kind of question is known but misapplied, which is a selection problem rather than a knowledge problem. Right method with a wrong number is an arithmetic slip, and if most of them are on the paper where no calculator is permitted, that is the diagnosis right there. Correct working with a final answer just outside the accepted range is rounding. A calculation where words were asked for, or an angle given without a theorem named, is a misread command word. A strong first half with blank final questions is time.

Then count the boxes, and notice what the counts imply. The four middle causes together, known but misapplied, arithmetic, rounding and command words, are technique, and technique is fixable in weeks. Not known is content, and content is fixable in months. Time is fixable with timed papers and almost nothing else. Most Dubai Year 11 scripts that families bring in panic are dominated by the technique boxes, which is genuinely good news and the opposite of what the family has concluded.

There is a seventh pattern that sits outside the six and deserves its own row in the table: invisible working. A wrong final answer with nothing written between the question and the answer collects no method marks, where the same wrong answer with correct visible working collects most of them. Students who have come through systems that reward neat presentation are the worst affected, because they work on scrap and transcribe only the result. It takes about three sessions of enforced line-by-line working to retrain, and it is worth more marks than any topic on the syllabus.

SIX CAUSES OF A LOST MARK ON A 0580 SCRIPT - HOW TO SPOT EACH AND WHAT IT COSTS TO FIX
CauseWhat it looks like on the pageTypical time to fixWhat the fix actually is
Not knownBlank, or an attempt that belongs to a different topicThree to eight sessions per topic areaOrdinary teaching, then spaced retrieval so it survives a fortnight without practice

Arithmetic slipCorrect method, wrong number, concentrated on the non-calculator paperA term of ten-minute warm-upsDaily arithmetic fluency drill, plus estimating before computing so absurd answers get noticed
Rounding or accuracyCorrect working, final answer just outside the accepted rangeOne to two sessionsKeep the unrounded value in the calculator and round once, at the end of the question
Misread command wordA calculation where an explanation was wanted, or an angle without a named theoremOne to two sessionsRead the command word aloud before starting, with a short checklist per command
Ran out of timeA strong first half and blank final questionsThree to six timed papersTimed practice with a per-question budget; more content does not help this one

04

A term of 0580 support, week by week, with the measurable at each stage

A plan that cannot be described week by week is not a plan. The table below is the shape a twelve-week engagement takes when it starts from a marked script, and the point of the fourth column is that each stage produces something checkable rather than a feeling of momentum.

Weeks one and two look like less teaching than families expect, and that is deliberate. The first session reads the script and produces the loss breakdown; the second attacks the largest technique cause, because technique is where the quick marks are and an early measurable win changes a student's willingness to do the work. Families who insist on starting with content teaching in week one usually do so because content feels like what they are paying for, and they lose the fastest marks available to them.

The middle weeks are ordinary: teach, set work, mark it, address what the marking showed. The discipline that makes them productive is that every session begins with the previous week's marked work rather than with a new topic. A session that starts with new content has quietly decided not to check whether last week worked, and a term of those is how four months pass with nothing to show.

The last third shifts to timed papers, because by then the useful question is no longer whether your child can do a question but whether they can do a paper. Two measurables matter there: the proportion of the paper attempted with visible working, and the count in the time box. Both are easy to read and both predict the real thing better than topic confidence does. At week twelve, the comparison between the first loss breakdown and the second is the whole report, and it either shows movement or it does not.

TWELVE WEEKS OF 0580 SUPPORT - WHAT IS MEASURABLE AT EACH STAGE
WeekIn the sessionBetween sessionsWhat is measurable by the end
Week 1Read the marked script question by question and sort every lost mark into the six causesNothing set; the student brings any other marked work they haveA written loss breakdown with counts against each cause
Week 2Attack the largest technique cause, usually rounding, command words or invisible workingSix short questions chosen to expose that same causeWhether the same error recurs on fresh questions marked unaided
Weeks 3-4Teach the first content gap, with the previous week's marked work reviewed firstExam-style questions on the new content plus two retrieval questions from week 2Annotated work in the student's own hand on two distinct topic areas
Weeks 5-6Second content gap, plus a timed section of about twenty minutes in sessionA full timed section at home, with the clock honouredA first reading on pace, and the time box becoming a number rather than a worry
Weeks 7-8Chaining practice: questions deliberately built from three topic areas at onceA mixed set with no topic labels, so selection has to be decided by the studentThe known-but-misapplied count, which should be falling by now
Weeks 9-10Mark a full paper line by line with the student present, naming where each method mark satA second full paper at correct duration under the right calculator rulesA dated script directly comparable to the one from week 1
Weeks 11-12Convert remaining partial knowledge into whole marks on predictable materialShort daily arithmetic drill and one mixed setThe second loss breakdown, placed beside the first, which is the report
05

What mark movement honestly looks like, and why no grade can be promised

  • Grade boundaries are set after each series, so no grade can be promised in advance
  • Mark movement across two school-marked scripts is independent evidence and can be shown
  • Technique losses move fastest; content moves in proportion to work done between sessions
  • Nobody can supply unreleased papers or ungraded boundaries, and nobody should offer to

This is where most tutoring pages become vague, so here is the straight version. Nobody can promise a grade. Grade boundaries are set by the board after each series and vary between series, so the number of marks needed for a given grade in a June series still to be sat is not knowable in advance by anybody, including a tutor who has taught the specification for twenty years. Anybody offering a guaranteed outcome is either misunderstanding the system or selling something they cannot deliver, and in this market both exist.

What can honestly be shown is mark movement on comparable scripts. If your child's November mock loses nineteen marks across the six causes and the February mock loses nine, that is real, independently produced and attributable. It may or may not be a grade, because that depends on boundaries nobody has set yet. What it is not is an opinion. A family holding two marked scripts and two loss breakdowns is in a far stronger position than one holding a reassuring conversation.

On realistic scale, the honest ranges are narrower than advertising implies and wider than pessimism suggests. Technique losses, which means rounding, command words, invisible working and accuracy, can usually be reduced substantially inside a term, because they are habits rather than knowledge and they respond quickly to marked work. Content gaps move more slowly and in proportion to the hours actually worked between sessions, not in the sessions themselves. Timing improves in proportion to the number of full papers sat under real conditions, which for most students is a small number because it is unpleasant.

One more honesty note, because the alternative is standard in this market. No provider can show you an unreleased paper or a grade boundary for a series that has not been graded, and anybody implying otherwise is describing a malpractice risk rather than an advantage. Cambridge's syllabuses, specimen papers, past papers and mark schemes are its own copyright material: the right behaviour is to cite them, link the official pages and work from what the school has legitimately provided. A provider circulating a bundle of papers as a download is advertising a problem.

06

How to audit an online tutor in three weeks

Three weeks is enough. Not because progress will be visible by then, but because the presence or absence of an evidence habit is visible immediately, and the evidence habit is what predicts whether month four will have anything to show. The table below is five questions to ask in week three, with what a solid answer sounds like and what a weak one sounds like.

The pattern in the weak column is worth naming, because it is not incompetence. Weak answers are almost always about feelings and effort: your child is more confident, we are building strong foundations, there is a good rapport. Those statements may be true and they are not measurements, and a provider who offers them in week three will still be offering them in month five. The question to ask after each one is simply: how would I know that from a document?

Two of the five questions are specifically about your child doing work unaided, and that is deliberate. The commonest failure mode in online tutoring is a pleasant hour of guided work in which the tutor's prompts carry the student through, after which nobody knows what the student can do alone. It is a comfortable hour for everybody. The only cure is work attempted unaided between sessions and marked, which is why its absence is the single strongest signal in the audit.

If the audit goes badly, change tutor rather than model. This is the practical advantage of video that matters most and is least discussed: the replacement can be anybody who has taught the specification, rather than whoever else is prepared to drive to your community at that hour. Matches fail for ordinary reasons and the right response is to switch in week three, which is cheap, instead of enduring it until March, which is not.

FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK AN ONLINE 0580 TUTOR IN WEEK THREE
Ask thisA solid answer sounds likeA weak answer sounds likeWhy it matters
Which of the six causes is costing the most marks, and what is the count?Rounding and command words, nine marks between them on the November scriptHe makes careless errors and needs to slow downA count can be re-measured; a characterisation cannot
What has my child done unaided since we started, and can I see it marked?Three sets, here they are, with the method marks ringed and two still wrongWe have been working through things together in the sessionsGuided work in a session proves nothing about unaided performance in a hall
Which school assessment will we judge this against, and when is it?The February mock, and I will produce a second loss breakdown from itWe will see how the next report looksThe school is the only independent assessor in the arrangement
What will you not be able to fix by June, and why?Statistics content if we keep this frequency; it needs more hours than we haveWith consistent effort everything is achievableA tutor who will not name a limit is not planning, they are reassuring
Has my child sat a full paper at correct duration yet?Not yet; it is booked for Saturday and I will mark it line by lineWe do exam questions in most sessionsTiming is a top cause of lost marks and only a full timed paper measures it
07

The technology that matters, and the kit that does not

  • A second device pointed at the paper, so the tutor sees handwritten working as it happens
  • A headset with a microphone, which is the cheapest real improvement available
  • A fixed place and a closed door, agreed with the household rather than improvised
  • Not needed: premium bandwidth, second monitors, subscription software or paid platform extras

Families overthink this and providers encourage them to, so here is the short version. Three things materially affect whether an online maths session works, and none of them is expensive.

The first is a way for the tutor to see handwritten working as it happens. A second device propped to point at the page is the cheapest and often the best solution: an old phone on a stack of books, joined to the same call, pointed at the paper. The maths lives on paper, which is where the examination will also live, and the tutor sees the hand move rather than a finished answer. A graphics tablet is a reasonable alternative and is genuinely better for some students, and it is an upgrade rather than a requirement.

The second is audio. A headset with a microphone transforms a session in an apartment with a sibling in the room, and laptop speakers in a tiled Dubai living room produce echo that makes a sixty-minute session tiring for both people. It is the lowest-cost improvement available and the one families skip most often, because it is not obviously about mathematics.

The third is a fixed place and time. A student who takes the session at the dining table while the household moves around them is in a worse learning environment than the same student at a desk with a door, and this matters more at fifteen than at nine because the temptation to drift is larger. None of this requires a study. It requires a decision about where the laptop goes and a household agreement about the hour. What does not matter: a premium internet package, a second monitor, subscription software, or any platform feature beyond screen sharing, annotation and the ability to save what was written.

08

Where online loses, stated plainly

A page arguing for a model should say where it fails, otherwise the rest of it is advertising. There are four situations where a tutor in the room is better for a 0580 candidate, and a family in any of them should know it.

The first is a student who will not engage and has to be physically supervised. Video makes drifting easy, and a student who scrolls on a phone below the camera can waste an hour without anybody noticing until the marked work does not arrive. An adult in the room removes that option. The honest counter is that the marked work still reveals it within two weeks, so the failure is detected quickly rather than prevented, and some families would rather prevent it.

The second is severe mathematics anxiety, where the student needs a person beside them to attempt anything at all. This is real and it is more common at fifteen than parents expect, because it has usually been building since primary. In the acute phase, physical presence genuinely helps. The practical compromise some families use is a few sessions with somebody in the room to break the freeze, then video for the sustained work.

The third is a household where no quiet space exists at any hour and the session genuinely cannot happen. This is a real constraint in a shared apartment with multiple children, and a headset only solves part of it. The fourth is a student with specific access needs who requires physical materials or a particular kind of in-person support. In all four cases the right answer is not a better video platform. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, that service exists only in India, and where this page's model is the wrong one we would rather say so here than discover it in session three.

Running a timed paper at home so the result is worth something

  • Correct duration, visible clock, no pauses, one sitting
  • The calculator leaves the room for the paper that does not permit one
  • Record the time left if the student finishes early; it changes the diagnosis
  • The paper goes to the tutor unmarked and is marked with the student present

A timed paper sat badly produces a number that misleads everybody, so the conditions matter as much as the paper. The rules are short and families break most of them the first time, usually out of kindness.

Correct duration, timed from a clock the student can see, with no pauses. Correct calculator rules, which means the calculator is physically out of the room for the paper that does not permit one, not merely unused. No phone. No access to notes, formula sheets beyond what the paper itself provides, or a parent to ask. One sitting. If the student stops early because they have finished, the remaining time is recorded, because finishing twenty minutes early with blanks is a different diagnosis from finishing exactly on time.

Afterwards, do not give the answers. The paper goes to the tutor unmarked and is marked line by line in the next session with the student present, which is where the learning actually is. A student who marks their own paper against an answer key learns which answers were wrong and nothing about why, and the why is the entire content of the exercise. This is also the moment when the method-mark lesson lands hardest: seeing marks available on a question you got wrong is more persuasive than being told about them.

Frequency matters less than most families assume. Two full papers properly sat and properly marked teach more than eight done loosely and self-marked, and in the final term a fortnightly rhythm is enough. In Dubai the practical obstacle is finding a two-hour uninterrupted window, which on a weeknight after a long school run rarely exists, so Saturday morning is usually the answer. Write the dates in a calendar at the start of the term rather than deciding each week, because the week will always have a reason.

Where we tutor

Where Dubai families take online sessions from, and what the room is like

For video sessions the relevant local detail is not the commute but the room: whether a fifteen-year-old can close a door, where the paper goes, and whether the household's schedule is in one timezone. These are the communities most online enquiries come from and what they usually need to solve.

Downtown Dubai and City Walk

Apartment living with shared study space at a premium, so the practical fix is usually a headset and an agreed hour when the room is actually free. Families here often choose a later slot, around 6.30pm, once the household has settled rather than straight after the school run.

DIFC and Business Bay

A high proportion of households where both parents work late and the student is alone at 5pm, which makes the session note after each lesson the main channel of information. Written notes matter more here than anywhere else, because nobody is in the room to see how the hour went.

JBR and Bluewaters Island

Smaller apartments, considerable background noise and frequently a sibling in the same room. A second device propped as a document camera is usually the difference between a session that can see the working and one that cannot, and it costs nothing if an old phone exists.

Dubai Creek Harbour

Newer towers with reliable connectivity and few schools immediately nearby, so most students here commute and arrive home late. A 6pm or weekend slot holds better than a weeknight 4.30pm, and a weekend morning is the only realistic window for a full two-hour Extended paper.

The Lakes, The Views and Jumeirah Golf Estates

Villa households where a dedicated desk usually exists, which removes the commonest practical obstacle entirely. The constraint here is activity schedules, so families tend to fix one weeknight teaching slot and one weekend slot for timed papers.

Tilal Al Ghaf and Dubai South

Outer communities with long school runs, where the financial and scheduling case for video is strongest. These households are also the most likely to have moved into the emirate recently, which means a student adjusting to a new specification mid-course.

Palm Jumeirah

A high proportion of families who travel for several weeks at a time, so the useful arrangement is a schedule that follows the student rather than the address. Sessions continuing from another timezone are routine, and the written record is what keeps the plan intact across a trip.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

A mixed-curriculum cluster where a Year 11 friendship group may contain students on Cambridge, Pearson and CBSE mathematics at once. Comparing revision across those routes actively misleads, which is a conversation worth having in the first session rather than the fifth.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

The central districts: Downtown, DIFC, Business Bay and the Creek

Families who live centrally and commute outward to school, so students arrive home late and sessions sit in the evening. The strongest reason these households choose video is that it survives a 6.30pm start, which a visiting arrangement rarely does on a weeknight.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked script with the enquiry

The one document that makes a first session useful is your child's most recent marked mock or class assessment, with the syllabus code and tier from the statement of entry. A photograph of each page is enough. Without it the first session is a conversation rather than a diagnosis.

  2. 02

A free trial session spent reading the script

One free session per family, no card details taken. The tutor goes through the script with your child question by question, sorting every lost mark into the six causes. Your child hears the sorting happen, which is frequently the first time anybody has explained why a mark went rather than that it went.

  3. 03

The loss breakdown comes to you in writing

After the trial you receive the counts against each of the six causes, which two are costing the most, an estimate of how long each takes to fix, and which school assessment the plan should be judged against. You can use that document with us or with any other provider.

  4. 04

Set the plan and the room up once

Fix the weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, agree the weekend window for timed papers, and sort the practical side: a second device pointed at the paper, a headset, a place with a door. Ten minutes of setup removes most of the friction a video session can have.

  5. 05

Work set, attempted unaided, marked and returned

Exam-style questions every week, attempted without help, returned annotated in your child's own handwriting with method and accuracy marks identified. Plus a three-line note: taught, mastered, still wrong. This is the part you can read, and it is the part that proves the hour.

  6. 06

Second loss breakdown at the next school assessment

When the school's next mock is marked, the same six causes are counted again and placed beside the first set. That comparison is the report. It is produced from a document the school marked, which is the only independent measurement in the arrangement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Lost marks are sorted by cause, not by topic

Eleven marks lost to rounding is a fortnight of work; the same eleven lost to three unlearned topics is most of a term. Identical topic lists, completely different plans. Every engagement starts with that sorting, in writing, with counts you can check against the script yourself.

You hold the evidence, not a summary of it

Annotated work in your child's handwriting, dated timed scripts, three-line session notes and two loss breakdowns. All of it exists as files you can read in week nine about what happened in week two, which is the practical advantage of a session that already lives on a screen.

Progress is measured against the school's marking

The school marks mocks with no interest in whether tutoring is working, which makes those scripts the only independent measurement available. We name the assessment and the date at the start, then produce a second loss breakdown from it rather than from our own tests.

Unaided work is the standard, not guided work

A pleasant hour in which the tutor's prompts carry a student through proves nothing about an examination hall. Work is set to be attempted without help and marked on that basis, because the gap between guided and unaided performance is where June disappointments come from.

No grade promises, and a reason

Grade boundaries are set by the board after each series, so the marks needed for a grade are not knowable in advance by anybody. What can be shown is mark movement across two school-marked scripts. Anyone promising an outcome is describing a system that does not work that way.

We say where this model is wrong

A student who needs physical supervision, acute mathematics anxiety, or a household with no quiet hour are all situations where somebody in the room is better. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India, and where video is the wrong fit this page says so.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How will I know the online sessions are working before the next school report?+

By reading three things rather than waiting for one. First, the loss breakdown produced from your child's marked script in week one, with counts against six causes. Second, the annotated work your child attempted unaided each week, which shows whether the same error recurs on fresh questions. Third, a dated timed script from around week ten that is directly comparable to the one from week one. Reports arrive late and say little. Those three documents exist inside a month and answer the question directly, and you can read them without being a mathematician.

How does a tutor see my daughter's working if the lesson is on a screen?+

The simplest arrangement is a second device pointed at the page: an old phone propped on a stack of books, joined to the same call, aimed at the paper. The maths stays on paper, which is where the examination will be, and the tutor watches the hand move rather than seeing a finished answer. A graphics tablet works too and suits some students better, and a written script can also be photographed and marked on screen with your daughter watching. None of it needs a purchase if there is a spare phone in the house.

What should come back after each session, and in what form?+

Two things. A three-line note to you saying what was taught, what your child could do unaided by the end, and what was still wrong, short enough to read on a phone. And exam-style work set for the week, which comes back annotated in your child's own handwriting with the method and accuracy marks identified rather than ticked. If what comes back is a general message that the session went well, there is no record of what your child can do alone, which is the only thing the examination will test.

My son's mock went from forty-two to fifty-one marks. Is that a grade?+

Possibly, and nobody can tell you for certain in advance, because grade boundaries are set by the board after each series and vary between series. What the movement is, definitely, is nine marks of independently measured improvement on a script the school marked. The more useful question is where those nine came from. If they came out of the rounding, command-word and invisible-working boxes, the same work should keep paying. If they came from one topic that happened to appear, the next paper may not be as kind.

Can we record the sessions and go back over them?+

Ask the tutor and agree it in advance rather than assuming either way, because it involves a child and a recording and should be a deliberate decision with a stated purpose. Where it is agreed, recordings are genuinely useful for a worked example a student wants to revisit, and much less useful than people expect for revision, because nobody rewatches an hour. The higher-value record is the annotated written work, which takes thirty seconds to review and shows what your child could do rather than what the tutor explained.

Do we need a second screen, a tablet or a graphics tablet?+

No. Three things matter and none is expensive: a way for the tutor to see handwritten working as it happens, which a spare phone on a stack of books does well; a headset with a microphone, which is the single cheapest real improvement and the one families skip; and a fixed place with a door. A graphics tablet is a genuine upgrade for some students and not a requirement. Premium bandwidth, second monitors and subscription software make no measurable difference to a maths session.

How do we run a timed paper at home so the result actually means something?+

Correct duration, a clock the student can see, no pauses, one sitting, no phone, no notes beyond what the paper itself provides, and no parent to ask. For the paper that does not permit a calculator, the calculator leaves the room rather than sitting unused. If your child finishes early, record how much time was left, because finishing twenty minutes early with blanks is a different diagnosis from finishing on time. Then send it unmarked. It should be marked line by line in the next session with your child watching.

What happens if the internet drops in the middle of a session?+

Agree the fallback before it happens, which takes one message. The usual arrangement is that both sides try to rejoin for a few minutes, and if that fails the session is rescheduled rather than charged, because nobody travelled. The practical advantage of video shows up here: a rescheduled session can usually happen inside the same week, whereas a visit that collapses has already committed somebody's afternoon. Ask any provider what their policy is in writing before you book, alongside their late-cancellation terms.

Three weeks in, what should I be asking the tutor?+

Five questions. Which of the six causes is costing the most marks and what is the count? What has my child done unaided since we started, and can I see it marked? Which school assessment will we judge this against, and when is it? What will you not be able to fix by June, and why? And has my child sat a full paper at correct duration yet? Answers made of counts, documents and dates are solid. Answers about confidence, foundations and rapport are not measurements, however true they are.

Is online worse for a student with real maths anxiety?+

In the acute phase, often yes, and it is worth saying rather than arguing. A student who cannot attempt anything without a person beside them benefits from physical presence, and that anxiety has usually been building since primary school rather than appearing in Year 11. The compromise some families use is a short period with somebody in the room to break the freeze, then video for the sustained work. We do not offer home visits in the UAE, so where that is the right first step we will say so rather than sell around it.

Can a tutor mark a paper my daughter wrote by hand on paper?+

Yes, and it is the normal arrangement rather than a workaround. She photographs each page and sends it before the session, and it is marked on screen while she watches, with the method marks ringed and each lost mark named. Marking with the student present is the point: seeing that four marks were available on a question she got wrong teaches the method-mark lesson far better than being told about it. The marked file is then saved, so in March you can still read what November looked like.

How many marks is it realistic to move in a term?+

It depends entirely on which boxes the losses sit in, which is why the sorting matters more than the total. Technique losses, meaning rounding, command words, accuracy and invisible working, usually reduce substantially inside a term because they are habits and they respond fast to marked work. Content gaps move in proportion to the hours your child actually works between sessions, not to the hours bought. Timing improves in proportion to the number of full papers genuinely sat under correct conditions, which for most students is a small number because it is unpleasant.

Does online tutoring work for a student who simply will not do the work?+

Not well, and no delivery method solves it. Video makes drifting easier, because a student scrolling below the camera can pass an hour without anybody noticing. The honest counter is that the evidence discipline detects it quickly: work set to be attempted unaided either arrives or does not, and that is visible in week two rather than in March. Detection is not prevention though. Where a family needs physical supervision rather than teaching, they should buy supervision, at the cheapest band that provides it, and not a specialist hour.

Our family is out of Dubai for several weeks at a time. Can the sessions follow us?+

Yes, and it is one of the genuine advantages of this model rather than a concession. Session times are adjusted to wherever your child is, the same tutor continues, and the plan and the marked work stay in one place rather than restarting on your return. A fortnight away in the middle of Year 11 stops being a fortnight lost. Agree the timezone shift in advance rather than session by session, and no cancellation charge applies to a change arranged ahead of time.

If we decide to stop, what evidence should we be left holding?+

Everything that was produced, and you should ask for it rather than assume. That means the loss breakdowns, the annotated work in your child's handwriting, the dated timed scripts and the session notes. Those documents are about your child and they are useful to the next tutor, to the school and to you. A provider who cannot hand over a file of marked work at the end of an engagement was never producing one, which is the thing this whole page is written to help you notice in week three instead of month five.

Ask for the evidence pack before you ask for the rate

The question that separates useful 0580 support from an expensive habit is not what it costs. It is what will physically exist after four weeks. A marked school script, a loss breakdown sorted into six causes, annotated work in your child's own handwriting, weekly three-line notes and a dated timed paper. Send the most recent marked script with your enquiry and the free trial session produces the first of those documents, which is yours to use anywhere. Sessions run one-to-one on live video in Gulf Standard Time, and progress is judged against the school's next marked assessment rather than ours.
