Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 Home Tutor in Dubai

Parents searching for a Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 home tutor in Dubai are usually solving two problems at once: a practical paper that will not improve by reading, and a budget that has to stretch across a two-year IGCSE run. This page answers the money question first. It sets out what the Dubai market charges in AED per hour, what makes that figure move in this emirate, and how IB Gram delivers the same one-to-one teaching as live online lessons on Gulf Standard Time rather than a car journey across the city.

  • Market rates in AED per hour, each attributed to the page that published it
  • Papers 2 and 3 taught by screen share on the student's own files
  • Lessons run online on Gulf Standard Time, not as a Dubai home visit
  • A trial lesson before any payment, and a written session plan after it

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What a 0417 tutor costs in Dubai, and what the money actually buys

Start with the number, because every other decision follows from it. A qualified subject tutor teaching Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 online to a Dubai family sits in a market band of roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialist IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. At the budget end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, which buys general homework support rather than marked practical papers. Those are market figures published by those providers, not IB Gram prices.

A home visit costs more, and the reason is arithmetic rather than quality. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai at AED 180 to AED 350, and independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to AED 500. Monthly packages seen in this market run to AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home sessions, against roughly AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. The gap is travel. A tutor crossing from Mirdif to Dubai Marina at five in the afternoon spends longer in the car than in the lesson, and that time is inside your hourly rate whether the invoice itemises it or not.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai. Home visits are a service we run only in India. For UAE families, every lesson is one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, which is also why the subject in your URL suits the format unusually well. Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 is assessed mostly through software. Papers 2 and 3 ask the student to produce documents, databases, presentations, spreadsheets and web pages under timed conditions. A tutor watching the student's own screen, cursor and keystrokes sees more diagnostic detail than a tutor sitting beside them, because the file history is visible and reviewable.

The second half of the money question is how many hours you are buying. Most Dubai families who contact us about 0417 start with one 60-minute session a week and raise it to two in the term before the exam series. A Year 10 student building practical fluency needs steady weekly contact more than long sittings. A Year 11 student eight weeks out from the papers needs volume, and the honest version of that conversation includes the fact that volume costs money and that there is a point past which extra hours stop paying for themselves.

What follows is the detail nobody in this search result publishes: the rate bands with their sources, the six variables that move the figure in Dubai specifically, the assessment structure that explains why practical tuition is priced differently from theory tuition, the equipment line most parents forget, a two-year spend plan, and the permit question you should ask anyone you are about to pay in cash. Where a figure comes from a published page, that page is named. Where a figure is not verifiable, it is left out.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0417 sits inside a Cambridge pathway that starts well before Year 10 and continues past the IGCSE certificate. Each stage below changes what a tutor is for, and each changes the hours a Dubai family ends up buying.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Computing

The years before the IGCSE option block, where keyboard fluency, file management and spreadsheet logic are either built or quietly skipped. Students who arrive in Year 10 unable to navigate a file system, name a file deliberately or use absolute cell references lose time in 0417 that the syllabus assumes they already have. Checkpoint tests run in March, May and October.

In Dubai this stage varies enormously between schools. A British-curriculum school with a well-staffed computing department will have covered spreadsheet functions properly by Year 9. A school where computing shares a timetable slot with design technology often has not, and the gap shows up in the first 0417 spreadsheet task rather than at parents' evening.

0417Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology

Three externally examined papers, no coursework. Paper 1 is a written theory exam worth 40% of the grade. Paper 2 covers document production, databases and presentations. Paper 3 covers spreadsheets and website authoring. The two practical papers carry 30% each and are sat in a school computer room with source files supplied by Cambridge, under exam conditions, with evidence captured as the student works.

Dubai schools offer 0417 in the Year 10 option block, often against Computer Science 0478 or a creative subject, and the two are routinely confused at option evening. 0417 is applications-led and rewards accuracy under time pressure; 0478 is programming and computational theory. A student who chose 0417 expecting to learn Python is in the wrong room, and a tutor's first job is sometimes to say so.

The UAE mandatory subjects running alongside

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are compulsory in every Dubai private school regardless of the licensed curriculum. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for the two groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ.

This matters to a 0417 timetable in a practical way. Mandatory-subject instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and those minutes come out of the same week as everything else. A Year 11 student sitting 0417 plus eight other subjects plus Arabic and Islamic Education has a genuinely full week, which is the real reason a second weekly tuition hour is harder to place than parents expect.

NEXTAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, IB Diploma or BTEC after 0417

0417 is not a prerequisite for A Level Computer Science, and it is not intended as one. It feeds into IT-related BTEC routes, into Business and Economics A Levels where data handling is useful, and into university courses that assume spreadsheet and database competence. Its practical skills carry further into undergraduate study than most students expect, particularly the data-handling half.

Dubai sixth forms split sharply at this point. Several large British-curriculum schools run A Level Computer Science but not A Level IT, so a student who enjoyed 0417's applications work and disliked its theory often moves to Business or to a BTEC. Checking what the school actually offers in Year 12, before the Year 11 options are locked, avoids a frustrating conversation in February.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0417 is a set of distinct skills that happen to share one syllabus code. A tutor who treats it as a single subject will teach the parts your child already knows. Below is the breakdown we diagnose against in a first session, with where the marks sit.

Paper 1 theory: systems, devices and storage

Written exam, part of the 40%

Types and components of computer systems, input and output devices, storage devices and media. Marks are lost here on precision rather than knowledge: a student who writes "it stores data" where the question asks for a characteristic of solid-state storage has not answered the question, and the mark scheme does not award effort.

Paper 1 theory: networks and their effects

Written exam, part of the 40%

Network types, hardware, the internet and its effects on how people work and communicate. The common failure is describing a benefit when the question asks for a drawback, or giving two versions of the same point in a question that needs two distinct points.

Paper 1 theory: ICT applications and the systems life cycle

Written exam, part of the 40%

Applications in banking, retail, medicine and education, plus analysis, design, development, testing, implementation, documentation and evaluation. The life cycle is the section students most often learn as a list of words and least often learn as a sequence they can apply to an unseen scenario.

Paper 1 theory: safety, security and emerging technologies

Written exam, part of the 40%

Physical safety, e-safety, data protection, malware, phishing, pharming and authentication methods, alongside newer technologies. Answers here need the specific mechanism, not the general worry: how a phishing email actually works, not that the internet can be unsafe.

Paper 2: document production and mail merge

Practical exam, part of the 30%

Importing text, applying styles, setting columns and margins, handling headers and footers, and running a mail merge from a supplied data source. Marks go on exact instruction-following. A heading styled by hand instead of with the named style scores nothing even when it looks identical.

Paper 2: databases, queries and reports

Practical exam, part of the 30%

Building a database from supplied files, setting field types correctly, writing queries with multiple criteria, calculated fields, sorting and producing reports that fit the page. Field types set as text instead of numeric break every subsequent calculation, and the student usually does not notice until the report is wrong.

Paper 2: presentation authoring

Practical exam, part of the 30%

Master slides, consistent formatting, speaker notes, audience notes and printing to the stated layout. This is the section most often rushed because it comes last in the paper, and the marks are among the easiest in the whole qualification to collect if there is time left.

Paper 3: spreadsheets, formulae and functions

Practical exam, part of the 30%

Absolute and relative referencing, nested functions, lookup functions, conditional logic, named ranges, replication and printing formulae as evidence. Referencing errors are the single largest source of lost marks, because one wrong dollar sign replicated down a column produces a column of wrong answers.

Paper 3: website authoring with HTML and stylesheets

Practical exam, part of the 30%

Writing and editing HTML, attaching an external stylesheet, controlling layout with tables or divisions, inserting images with correct attributes, and keeping content, structure and presentation separated as the mark scheme requires.

Paper 3: the evidence document

Practical exam, part of the 30%

Every practical paper is marked from an evidence document the student builds while working: screenshots, formulae views, HTML source. A perfect spreadsheet with no evidence of the formula is an unmarkable answer, and this is where able students lose grades without ever making a subject error.

File management and naming discipline

Both practical papers

Saving to the stated filename, in the stated format, in the stated folder, and printing with the candidate's name on every page. These marks look trivial written down and are lost in volume every session. A tutor who does not audit file names is leaving marks on the table.

Exam-room timing across both practical papers

Both practical papers

Each practical paper runs to a long sitting with many short tasks, and the pacing skill is knowing when to leave a task and come back. Students who finish question one perfectly and question eight not at all score worse than students who finish everything roughly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats are genuinely available to a Dubai family looking for 0417 support, and they are priced differently for reasons worth understanding before you choose. IB Gram runs the first of them.

Weekly one-to-one online, 60 minutes

The format we deliver. One tutor, one student, live video with screen sharing in both directions, on Gulf Standard Time. The tutor watches the student work in the actual application, stops them at the moment an error is made rather than after it, and marks the practical output against the published criteria between sessions.

  • Student shares their screen while building the spreadsheet or web page
  • Tutor can take control to demonstrate, then hand back
  • Session recording available for revision in the exam term
  • Written notes after each session listing what was fixed and what is next

Intensive block before a Cambridge series

A short, dense run of sessions in the weeks before the papers, built around timed practical attempts rather than new content. Used mostly by Year 11 students who have the knowledge and lose marks to pacing and evidence capture. Market pricing rises closer to an exam series, so booking a block early is cheaper than booking it in panic.

  • Two or three sessions a week for four to eight weeks
  • Full past practical papers attempted under timed conditions
  • Evidence documents audited task by task
  • Paper 1 theory revisited through command-word drilling

Paired sessions for two students at the same stage

Two students, one tutor, one rate split between them. It works for 0417 only when both are at a similar level and taking the same papers, because practical work moves at the speed of the slower keyboard. Where it fits, it brings the per-student cost down meaningfully without dropping to group-class scale.

  • Both students must be sitting the same papers in the same series
  • Screen sharing alternates so each gets observed work
  • Cheaper per student than one-to-one, dearer than a group class
  • Not suitable when one student is two grades ahead of the other

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What Dubai parents are really asking when they search for a 0417 home tutor

  • "Home tutor" often means "private tutor" rather than "tutor in my house"
  • For 0417 the student must be the one at the keyboard
  • Travel is a cost inside the hourly rate, however it is invoiced
  • IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India

The phrase "home tutor" in this market usually means two separate things, and separating them saves money. For some families it means a person physically in the villa, because a younger child needs supervision as much as teaching. For most families asking about a Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 home tutor in Dubai, it means private one-to-one tuition rather than a group class at a centre, and the word "home" is doing the work of "private". Those two requirements have different prices and different answers.

The second group is the larger one, and for them the location of the tutor is a cost, not a benefit. A Year 11 student working on a spreadsheet does not need an adult in the room; they need an adult who can see the formula bar. That is cheaper and more precise to arrange over video than over a 40-minute drive. The first group has a real requirement we cannot meet in the UAE, and we say so plainly rather than taking the booking and disappointing them in week two.

There is also a subject-specific reason the distinction matters more for 0417 than for most subjects. The qualification is assessed on software output. The student has to produce files, under time pressure, in the applications their school's exam room provides. A tutor sitting beside them tends to take the keyboard. A tutor on a screen share cannot, so the student does the typing, which is the skill being examined. Several families who started with a home tutor and moved to online lessons describe exactly that change: the student stopped watching and started working.

So the honest framing of this search is: you are buying tutor quality, subject specificity and hours, and you are choosing whether to also buy travel. The rest of this page prices all four.

02

What the Dubai market charges for IGCSE ICT 0417 tuition

Three of the six best-ranking tutoring pages for Dubai IGCSE queries publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family pays in. The table below collects what the market has actually published, in AED, with the provider that published each band named. Read it as a market map, not as a price list. IB Gram does not publish a fixed hourly rate on this page because the rate depends on the tutor, the session length and the number of weekly hours, and a single invented figure would be less useful than the real spread.

The pattern across the bands is consistent. Below roughly AED 150 an hour you are buying supervision and homework help, often from a university student, and almost never structured marking of practical output. Between AED 150 and AED 300 you are buying a tutor who knows the syllabus and will mark work against the published criteria. Above AED 300 you are usually buying scarcity: a named tutor, a specific board specialism, or availability at the worst hour of the week. Home visits sit across the middle and upper bands because travel has to be paid for.

Two more numbers are worth holding. Monthly packages advertised in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. A Dubai family planning a two-year 0417 run should budget from the middle of that range and expect the final term to cost more than the first.

The six variables that move the hourly figure in this emirate

A quoted rate is an answer to a question nobody asked precisely. Two Dubai families can be quoted AED 180 and AED 320 for what looks like the same 0417 lesson and both quotes can be fair, because the inputs differ. The six variables below are the ones that move the number in practice here, and every one of them is a question you can ask before agreeing to anything.

The one that surprises people is timing within the academic year. Demand for IGCSE tuition in Dubai rises sharply in the eight weeks before a Cambridge series, and rates rise with it. UAE candidates sit the June and November series, so the squeeze lands twice: once from roughly April into June, and again in the weeks before the November papers. Entries for June close in the spring, well ahead of that squeeze, which means the price signal and the paperwork deadline arrive in the same term. A family booking in November for June is buying at a different price from a family booking in April, and the April family is also choosing from whoever is left rather than from everyone.

The second is practical marking. Marking a 0417 practical attempt properly takes a tutor longer than marking a theory answer, because the evidence document has to be opened, the formulae checked in their displayed form, the HTML inspected and the file names audited. A tutor who includes that work charges for it. A tutor who does not include it is cheaper and is also not doing the thing that moves a practical grade. Ask explicitly whether marked practical papers are inside the hourly rate or billed separately, because that single answer explains most of the price gap in this market.

Online lessons against a home visit, priced honestly

This is the comparison the search deserves, and it is the one the competing pages skip. Both formats can teach 0417 well. They differ on cost per teaching minute, on how wide the tutor pool is, and on who ends up holding the keyboard. The table below sets out all three for a Dubai family, with the travel reality specific to this city rather than a generic line about convenience.

The tutor-pool point is the one that decides most 0417 cases. There are not many tutors in any city who are genuinely strong on both halves of this syllabus, and a home visit limits you to those within a sensible drive of your community. A family in Arabian Ranches hiring locally is choosing from the tutors who will drive to Arabian Ranches at 17:30. The same family online is choosing from every 0417 specialist available at 17:30, which for a subject this narrow is the difference between a specialist and a generalist with a spreadsheet.

Against that, a home visit genuinely suits some situations. A student who will not start work without an adult present, a household where screen time is already a battle, a younger sibling who needs the same supervision: those are real reasons and a parent who gives them is not being fussy. Our position is simply that we do not provide that in the UAE, so if it is your actual requirement you should hire locally and we will say so in the first conversation rather than the fourth.

What 0417 assesses, and why that changes the budget

Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 is examined through three papers and no coursework. Paper 1 is a written theory exam carrying 40% of the grade. Papers 2 and 3 are practical exams carrying 30% each, sat at a computer with source files supplied for the series. Paper 2 covers document production, databases and presentations. Paper 3 covers spreadsheets and website authoring. Confirm the current structure and timings for your child's exam year on cambridgeinternational.org, because Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle and the version in a second-hand revision guide may not be the version being sat.

The budget consequence is direct. Sixty per cent of the grade is earned by producing files under time pressure, and that cannot be taught by explanation. It is taught by the student attempting a task, the tutor seeing exactly where the attempt failed, and the student attempting it again. That is a slower, more labour-intensive kind of tuition than working through theory questions, and it is why a tutor who marks practical output charges more than one who does not.

It also explains why the cheap end of the market underperforms specifically on this subject. A tutor at AED 60 an hour can plausibly talk a student through network topologies. The same tutor is unlikely to open an evidence document, check that the formulae view was captured, confirm the external stylesheet was attached rather than inlined, and verify that every printout carries the candidate details. Those checks are where 0417 grades are made and lost, and they are labour. Paying for them is the main thing that distinguishes a useful 0417 hour from a pleasant one.

Equipment, software and broadband: the cost line parents forget

  • Physical keyboard and mouse; a tablet is not usable for Papers 2 and 3
  • Match the school's office suite and version where possible
  • Check upload speed, not just download, for screen sharing
  • A second screen replicates the exam-room layout cheaply
  • Ask the school's ICT coordinator which software the exam room runs

Every 0417 budget has a hardware component and most families do not plan for it. The syllabus is assessed in applications, and the student needs to practise in software close enough to the exam-room version that muscle memory transfers. That does not mean buying anything expensive, but it does mean checking three things before the first paid session, because discovering them in week six wastes money already spent.

First, a real keyboard and a mouse. A tablet cannot do this qualification. Spreadsheet work with absolute references and HTML editing both need keyboard shortcuts and precise cursor placement. Second, the same application family the school's exam room uses. A student practising a mail merge in one office suite and sitting the paper in another will find the menus moved, and under timed conditions moved menus cost marks. Ask the school's ICT coordinator which suite and which version their exam room runs; they will know and they are rarely asked.

Third, a stable upload. Screen sharing needs upload bandwidth, not just download, and apartment connections in Dubai are usually fine but shared household use at 19:00 is not. Where an extra screen is available it helps noticeably: the student keeps the task sheet on one display and works on the other, which is close to the exam-room setup. None of this is a sales point, and we gain nothing from a family buying a monitor. It is simply the part of the spend that sits outside the hourly rate and still affects the grade.

07

Planning the spend across a two-year 0417 run

Most families arrive at this page thinking about an hourly rate and leave needing a two-year figure, because that is the real decision. A Cambridge IGCSE taken across Years 10 and 11 is roughly twenty teaching months, and tuition demand is not flat across them. The first year is maintenance; the second year is load; the final term is intensive. Planning for that shape costs less than reacting to it.

The table below models four plans using the published market bands, so the numbers are market-derived rather than invented. They are indicative and they are not an IB Gram quotation. What they show is the structural point: a steady one-hour week from the start of Year 10, stepped up in the final term, costs less than a panicked block of three sessions a week in the last eight weeks, and produces a better result because the practical skills have had time to become habit.

There is a further saving most parents miss. 0417 shares skills with other subjects a Dubai student is probably taking. The spreadsheet work supports Business Studies and Economics data handling. The presentation and document work supports every subject with a project. A tutor who knows this will sometimes spend ten minutes of a 0417 session on a Business Studies ratio table, and that is not drift; it is the same skill earning marks twice. When you price tuition, price the transfer rather than the single subject, because the same hour is paying into two or three grades at once and a two-year plan built that way is cheaper per mark than three separate arrangements.

Permits, cash payments and what to ask before you hire anyone in Dubai

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • Eligibility covers school teachers, employees, unemployed residents and students aged 15-18
  • No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you
  • Abu Dhabi adds reported ADEK ethics rules about tutoring your own school's students
  • Ask who teaches, what is marked, and what happens if the match is wrong

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and the position is worth knowing before money changes hands. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. According to u.ae, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page describes the route as an application through its smart app, website and e-services system, with a two-working-day completion time and no listed fee.

Two things follow. A tutor who tells you a permit is expensive, slow or optional is telling you something the official pages contradict. And a tutor operating without one is, in the words of the federal portal, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you, and if someone quotes one they are guessing. In Abu Dhabi there is an additional layer: ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct is reported to bar the same thing.

The practical version of all this, for a Dubai parent about to pay for 0417 lessons, is a short list of questions. Who exactly will teach the session, every week. Which board and which papers have they taught, and in which series. Is practical marking included. What happens if the match is wrong after two sessions. How is payment taken and what is the cancellation position. A tutor or platform that answers all five without hedging is usually worth the rate. One that will not name the tutor until after payment is a different proposition, whatever the rate.

Where we tutor

Where in Dubai our 0417 students live, and what that changes

Area matters less for an online lesson than for a home visit, which is the point. It still changes the clock. Below are the Dubai communities 0417 enquiries most often come from, with the practical scheduling detail that actually affects a session start time.

Dubai Marina and JLT

High-rise families, usually a short school run but a slow one. Most 0417 students here reach a quiet desk by 16:45, and apartment broadband handles screen sharing comfortably. The constraint is a shared study space, not bandwidth.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Dense cluster of large British-curriculum schools, so Year 10 and Year 11 option blocks in this area generate more 0417 enquiries than anywhere else in the emirate. Sessions from 17:00 work; earlier runs into after-school clubs.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Longer bus routes and later arrivals home. A 0417 session before 17:30 is often optimistic here, and families who tried booking a home tutor across town are the ones who most quickly see the travel arithmetic.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Sports City

Fast-growing, mostly villa and townhouse, with a wide spread of school destinations across the emirate. Evening slots after 18:00 are the most reliable, and siblings in different year groups often share back-to-back sessions.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills

Villa communities with dedicated study rooms, which suits a practical subject where the student needs a real keyboard and a second screen rather than a laptop on a dining table. Weekend morning slots are popular here.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Families living next to the university cluster, often with a parent in a technical field and a clear view of what 0417 should cover. Expectations about software versions are highest in this area and worth settling in the trial lesson.

Business Bay and Downtown

Apartment living with heavy traffic either side of the working day. Online lessons remove the part of the problem a home tutor cannot solve, which is Sheikh Zayed Road between 17:00 and 19:00.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established low-rise districts feeding several long-standing Cambridge schools. Students here frequently take 0417 alongside a full set of sciences, so session length matters more than session count.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills

The densest concentration of Cambridge and British-curriculum provision in Dubai, and the source of most 0417 option-block questions we see. Students across these schools sit the same papers but meet very different amounts of practical lab time.

  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • GEMS Founders School Al Barsha
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Repton Al Barsha

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Long-established schools with stable Year 11 cohorts, where 0417 is usually chosen by students who want a usable qualification rather than a route into computer science. Timetables here tend to protect lab time more reliably.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai College
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Horizon English School

Mirdif, Festival City and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Mixed curriculum area with several large schools running Cambridge IGCSE alongside other boards. Enquiries from here often come late in Year 11, after the first set of mock practical papers has come back.

  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • Repton Dubai

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai market this page describes; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the paper, not just the subject

Say which of the three 0417 papers is the problem, which school and year group, and which Cambridge series is the target. A parent who writes "Paper 3 spreadsheets, Year 11, June series" gets matched to a different tutor from one who writes "needs ICT help", and gets matched faster.

  2. 02

A trial lesson before any payment

The first session is a diagnostic. The student attempts a short practical task while the tutor watches the screen, and the tutor reports back on what the attempt showed. You see the teaching before you commit, and we see whether the gap is subject knowledge, software fluency or exam pacing.

  3. 03

A written plan with a rate attached

After the trial you get the diagnosis in writing, the recommended session length and frequency, and the rate in AED per session, before you decide anything. If the honest recommendation is one hour a week rather than three, that is what the plan says.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with marked practical output

Sessions run at the same time each week on Gulf Standard Time. Between sessions the tutor marks the practical attempt, including the evidence document, and the next session starts from what the marking showed rather than from the next chapter.

  5. 05

Step up for the exam term, then stop

Six to eight weeks before the series, sessions typically move to two a week and shift to timed full papers. After the papers, tuition stops. We would rather you came back for A Level than kept paying for hours nobody needs.

  6. 06

Change the tutor if the match is wrong

If the first match is not working, say so after the second session and we move the student. A mismatch spotted in week two costs one session; a mismatch tolerated until the mocks costs a term and whatever you paid for it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Prices are shown as the market's, with sources

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with the date. Nothing is presented as an IB Gram price list, and nothing is quoted that could not be traced back to a published page. That is unusual in this search result, where three of six ranking pages publish no price at all.

The format matches the way 0417 is examined

The practical papers are marked on files the student produced under time pressure. Online lessons keep the student at their own keyboard with the tutor watching the screen, which is closer to the exam room than a tutor reaching across a desk. The delivery choice here is pedagogical, not logistical.

A specialist rather than whoever is nearby

0417 needs someone comfortable with both spreadsheet logic and HTML, and that combination is scarce in any single Dubai community. Removing the drive from the equation widens the pool from tutors within range of your villa to every 0417 specialist free at that hour.

Practical marking is part of the hour, not an extra

Marking a 0417 attempt means opening the evidence document, checking formulae in their displayed form, inspecting the HTML and auditing file names. That work is where the grade moves. We treat it as part of teaching the subject rather than as an upsell.

We say what we do not do

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE, does not hold any regulator or board accreditation, and does not produce assessed work for students. Each of those is stated here rather than left for a parent to discover. The essay mills in this search result make the opposite choice.

Hours are recommended, not maximised

The plan after a trial lesson says what the diagnosis supports. Sometimes that is one hour a week for a term; sometimes it is a ten-week block on a single paper and nothing afterwards. A recommendation that always grows is a sales process, not a teaching plan.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does a Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 tutor cost per hour in Dubai?+

Published Dubai rates put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and TutorChase quoting AED 270. Specialist IGCSE and A Level tuition appears at AED 200 to AED 450 and above in Bestimate's Dubai rate table. Budget online providers advertise far less, from AED 45 to AED 65, which generally buys homework supervision rather than marked practical papers. In-home visits run higher because travel sits inside the hour. Those are market figures from the providers named, not IB Gram prices; our rate depends on the tutor, session length and weekly hours, and is quoted in writing after a trial lesson.

Is paying extra for a 0417 home visit in Dubai worth it?+

For most 0417 students, no, and the reason is specific to this subject. Papers 2 and 3 are marked on files the student produces under timed conditions, so the student has to be the one at the keyboard. A tutor sitting beside them tends to take it. Published in-home rates of AED 180 to AED 500 also include travel time, so a cross-city visit at school-run hours buys fewer teaching minutes per dirham. Where a child genuinely will not work without an adult in the room, a home visit is a real requirement, but IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India, so you would hire locally.

Does Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 have coursework my child needs help with?+

No. 0417 is assessed entirely by external examination: one written theory paper and two practical papers sat at a computer with source files supplied for the series. There is no teacher-marked coursework component, which removes the academic-honesty grey area that surrounds subjects with internal assessment. It also changes what tuition is for. Nobody is reviewing a draft over several weeks; the work is timed practical attempts, marked against the published criteria, repeated until the method is automatic. Confirm the structure for your child's exam year on cambridgeinternational.org, since Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle and older revision guides describe older versions.

What software and equipment does my child need at home for 0417 lessons?+

A computer with a physical keyboard and mouse, an office suite in the same family as the school's exam room, a browser and a plain text editor for the HTML work, and enough upload bandwidth for screen sharing. A tablet is not workable, because absolute cell referencing and HTML editing both need keyboard shortcuts and precise cursor control. Ask your school's ICT coordinator which suite and version their exam room runs, so menu positions match what the student practises on. A second screen is useful rather than necessary: it lets the student keep the task sheet on one display and work on the other, which mirrors the exam-room layout.

How many 0417 sessions a week does a Dubai Year 11 student usually need?+

One 60-minute session a week through most of the year, rising to two in the six to eight weeks before the Cambridge series, covers the majority of cases we see. Practical fluency comes from frequent short attempts rather than long sittings, so weekly contact beats fortnightly double sessions. Where only one paper is weak, a ten-week block of two sessions aimed at that paper often works better than a year of general support. Dubai Year 11 timetables are genuinely full once mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education lessons are counted, so the practical limit is often what the week can hold rather than what the budget allows.

Can one tutor cover both the 0417 theory paper and the practical papers?+

Yes, and for 0417 that is what you want, because the two halves inform each other. A student who understands how a database actually indexes records writes better Paper 1 answers about data handling, and a student who has met the theory on file formats makes fewer practical errors. The scarce thing is a tutor genuinely strong on both spreadsheet logic and HTML as well as the theory content. That combination is thin on the ground in any one Dubai community, which is the main practical argument for choosing from every available specialist rather than from those within driving distance.

Do private tutors in Dubai need a MoHRE permit to teach 0417?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through MoHRE. The federal portal states it is granted free of charge for two years, and that eligible applicants include school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those operating without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount you are quoted as unverified. MoHRE's service page lists the application route through its smart app, website and e-services system.

Do 0417 tuition rates in Dubai rise closer to the exam series?+

They do, and the effect is seasonal rather than gradual. Demand concentrates in the weeks after mock results and before a Cambridge series, and availability thins at exactly the same time, so the family booking late pays more and chooses from less. For a June series the sequence is mock results in the winter term, entries closing in the spring, then the papers themselves, and the price of an hour climbs across that whole run. Booking a block in January for June is a different transaction from booking it in late April. If you expect to need the exam term, agreeing the rate before the rush is the cheapest decision available.

Is 0417 an easier option than Computer Science 0478 for a Dubai student?+

Easier is the wrong frame; they reward different students. 0417 is applications-led and examined mostly through timed practical work in documents, databases, spreadsheets and web pages, so it rewards accuracy, instruction-following and keyboard fluency. 0478 is programming and computational theory, and rewards abstraction. A student who chose 0417 expecting to learn to code is in the wrong option, and a student who finds precise instruction-following difficult will not find 0417 soft. In Dubai option blocks the two frequently sit against each other, and a single diagnostic session before the choice is locked is cheaper than a year of mismatch.

Which Cambridge series will my child sit 0417 in from a Dubai school?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE exams in a June series and a November series; the February/March series is offered to India only, so it is not an option from a UAE centre. The Checkpoint tests that do run in March, May and October are Primary and Lower Secondary assessments, not IGCSE, and are sometimes confused with a spring IGCSE sitting. Which series your child sits is the school's decision, so ask the exams officer rather than assuming. One detail matters more than parents realise: every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Always work from the timetable the school issues.

Does 0417 count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

The British-track equivalency rules require five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. 0417 is an accredited IGCSE subject, so it can form part of that count. Requirements change and are administered by the Ministry, not by us, so verify the current position on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation channel before relying on it. Tutoring is not required for equivalency and nobody should tell you otherwise.

Can we pay for 0417 lessons per session rather than buying a monthly package?+

Per-session payment is normal and is usually the sensible way to start, because it keeps the cost of a wrong match down to one session. Packages in this market exist because they are cheaper per hour: advertised examples include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, against AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home sessions. The trade is flexibility for rate. Our suggestion is to run per-session until the match is settled and the diagnosis is written down, then consider a block if the plan is going to run for a term. Ask what notice a package needs before you commit to it.

What actually happens in the first 0417 session with a new tutor?+

The student attempts a short practical task while the tutor watches the shared screen, usually a spreadsheet task with a lookup and a replication step, because that one task exposes referencing, file handling and pacing at once. The tutor does not correct in real time at first; they watch where the method breaks. Afterwards you get a written diagnosis: whether the gap is subject knowledge, software fluency, reading the instruction, or time management, and a recommended session length and frequency with the rate in AED. Nothing is charged before that session, and you decide after seeing the teaching rather than before.

How do online 0417 lessons fit around a Dubai school run and evening traffic?+

That is the part online delivery fixes outright. There is no drive, so a session starts at the booked minute regardless of what Sheikh Zayed Road is doing. Practically, students in Marina and JLT are usually at a desk by 16:45, Al Barsha families tend to prefer 17:00 or later once after-school clubs finish, and Mirdif and Al Warqa households with longer bus routes are more realistic from 17:30. Weekend morning slots suit villa communities such as Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills. During Ramadan, sessions commonly move to post-Iftar timing, and we schedule around that rather than against it.

Is a group class cheaper than one-to-one for 0417 in Dubai?+

Per student, yes, and for theory content a well-run group can work. For the practical papers it is weaker, because practical work moves at the pace of the slowest keyboard and the tutor can only watch one screen at a time. The middle option is a paired session: two students at genuinely matched level sitting the same papers in the same series, sharing one tutor and one rate. That brings the per-student cost down without losing observed practice. It stops working the moment the two students diverge by a grade, at which point one of them is being taught and the other is waiting.

Get a 0417 diagnosis and a written rate before you spend anything

If you came here for a number, the honest one is a range: roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai, with specialists higher and in-home visits higher again because travel is inside the hour. What that range buys depends on whether practical marking is included, which is the question most worth asking. Start with a trial lesson, see the teaching, then take the written diagnosis and the rate and decide. If the answer is that your child needs one hour a week rather than three, that is what the plan will say.
