IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Reef: What It Costs and What It Buys

An IGCSE maths tutor in Al Reef is usually bought in a hurry, about three weeks after a mock paper comes back worse than expected. This page does the arithmetic before the sales pitch: what the Abu Dhabi market charges per hour and where those figures come from, what a Cambridge 0580 Extended paper actually demands, and which lines on a typical tutoring invoice buy a family nothing. Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one and delivered live online, scheduled around the end of the Al Reef school run rather than around a tutor's drive out from the island.

  • Cambridge 0580 and Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 taught paper by paper
  • Market AED rates published on this page, each attributed to its source
  • One-to-one over live video, with no travel time inside the hour
  • A tutor teaches and reviews the student's own work, never writes it

IB & IGCSE in Al Reef

Start with the invoice, not the brochure

Al Reef is a community built around a price. Families move out past the airport road because the villas and the Downtown apartments cost less per square foot than Al Raha or the island, and because the commute is tolerable if the school is in Khalifa City. That same arithmetic should govern tutoring, and usually it does not. A parent who negotiated hard over rent will hand over AED 300 an hour for maths without asking what the hour contains.

So this page is written from cost outward. The first section publishes the AED bands observed across the Abu Dhabi and Dubai market and names who charges them, because almost nobody ranking for this search publishes a figure at all. The second section is a list of the places a maths budget leaks: hours bought in the wrong tier, travel folded into a rate, group rooms moving at the median, year-long retainers where ten focused weeks would have done. The third establishes which syllabus your child sits, because paying for Cambridge preparation when the school enters for Pearson Edexcel is the most expensive mistake available and the easiest to avoid.

The honest position on delivery comes next, because the URL you clicked says home tutor territory. In-home visits are not part of what IB Gram sells anywhere in the UAE; that is an India-only service. What a family off the Sweihan road gets instead is a one-to-one session over live video with a tutor chosen for the paper rather than for the postcode. The practical consequence is that a child sitting 0580 Extended Paper 2 gets somebody who marks non-calculator algebra for a living, rather than whoever was willing to drive thirty kilometres at five in the afternoon.

Maths rewards this approach more than most subjects. It is the one IGCSE where the diagnosis is almost mechanical: take a past paper, mark it question by question, and the topic list writes itself. Number and algebra fluency problems show up on the non-calculator paper; method and communication problems show up on the calculator paper, where a correct answer with no working still loses marks. A tutor who starts by marking rather than by teaching saves a family money in the first fortnight, and the saving is visible.

Everything below is either checkable or attributed. Where a figure belongs to a competitor, that competitor published it and is named. Where a date belongs to a board, the board publishes the live timetable and this page points at it rather than restating something that gets revised. Where the Ministry of Education sets a rule, the rule is quoted and the authority is named. Nothing here is a promise about a grade, because no tutor can make one, and anyone who does is telling you something about themselves rather than about your child.

At a glance

  • Market rates for qualified online subject tutors in the UAE run roughly AED 150-300 an hour; in-home visits are quoted at AED 180-500 because travel sits inside the rate
  • Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 splits its marks evenly between a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper - the tier decision changes both
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths A (4MA1) allows a calculator on both papers, which changes what an hour of tutoring should be spent on
  • UAE candidates sit the June and November Cambridge series; the February/March series is offered to India only
  • MoE equivalency on the British track counts five accredited IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, and maths is almost always one of them
  • Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a MoHRE private tuition work permit, granted free of charge for two years

Four syllabuses cover almost every maths paper sat in and around Al Reef. They are not interchangeable, and the differences decide how many hours a family needs to buy. Check your child's statement of entry before booking anything, because the code on that sheet is the only version of this question that matters.

0580Ages 14-16 - Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

The most widely sat maths syllabus in Abu Dhabi's British-curriculum schools. It is tiered: Core candidates sit two papers and are capped at grade C, Extended candidates sit two longer papers and can reach A*. One paper in each tier is taken without a calculator and the other with one, and the marks are split evenly between them. The content list runs from number and algebra through trigonometry, vectors and transformations to probability and statistics.

Several schools in the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor that Al Reef children travel to enter for 0580, which is why most tutoring enquiries from this community arrive with an 0580 past paper attached. The tier decision is usually made in the autumn term of Year 11 and locked by the school's internal entry deadline, well before the June series. A family that gets the tier right spends fewer hours; a family that gets it wrong spends a year preparing for a ceiling the child did not need.

4MA1Ages 14-16 - Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Two papers of two hours each, worth 100 marks apiece, with a calculator permitted on both. Entry is at Foundation tier, which awards grades 5 to 1, or Higher tier, which awards 9 to 4 with an allowed 3 beneath it. Because no paper is sat without a calculator, the arithmetic pressure that dominates Cambridge preparation moves elsewhere - into problem decoding, multi-step method and the discipline of writing enough working to earn method marks on a question that goes wrong.

Pearson runs International GCSE in May/June and in November, and publishes a provisional timetable ahead of each series. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026 - a useful indication of how long the wait is if a family uses November as a resit route. Always open the live Pearson timetable rather than trusting a date restated on a tutoring page, including this one.

0607Ages 14-16 - Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics

The syllabus chosen by schools running the IB Middle Years Programme alongside an IGCSE exit, because it includes a graphics-calculator expectation and an investigation or modelling paper that resembles later IB coursework. Candidates sit a short non-calculator paper, a longer calculator paper and a third paper that asks for extended reasoning. It is a different animal from 0580 and preparing for it with 0580 materials wastes hours.

If your child's school in the Khalifa City or Al Raha cluster runs MYP into Year 11, 0607 is the likely entry, and a tutor who has only taught 0580 will miss the investigation paper entirely. Al Reef families with two children at two different schools quite often need two different maths syllabuses covered in the same week, which is a real reason to ask about the code rather than to book a generic maths hour.

0606Ages 15-16 - Year 11 and acceleration

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

A separate qualification taken alongside 0580 Extended by students heading for AS and A Level Mathematics or for IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. It introduces differentiation, integration, binomial expansion, further trigonometry and the factor and remainder theorems. The jump in abstraction is larger than the jump from Core to Extended, and it is the point where strong 0580 students first meet work they cannot do by pattern recognition.

Abu Dhabi schools that teach 0606 usually run it as an option set or an after-school class, which means the teaching time per topic is thin and the support burden lands at home. For an Al Reef family already paying for one subject, the sensible move is a short block of hours on calculus notation and technique rather than a standing weekly slot on everything. Pearson's Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1) plays a similar role on the Edexcel side.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE Mathematics is not one subject to a tutor, it is ten strands with very different failure modes. The grid below names them the way the syllabus does, with the specific place marks go missing in each. A first session should establish which three of these are costing your child the most marks, and the rest should be left alone.

Number

Core and Extended

Standard form, bounds, ratio, percentage change and reverse percentages, surds and indices. On the non-calculator paper this strand is where grades are quietly lost: a reverse percentage done as a forward percentage costs the whole question, and bounds questions are marked on the inequality signs as much as on the arithmetic.

Algebra and graphs

Core and Extended

Expanding, factorising, rearranging, simultaneous and quadratic equations, inequalities, sequences and the shapes of reciprocal and exponential curves. The single largest marks block in the syllabus. Students who can solve a quadratic but cannot form one from a worded context lose the second half of every applied question.

Coordinate geometry

Core and Extended

Gradient, midpoint, length of a line segment, equations of straight lines, parallel and perpendicular conditions. Compact, learnable and reliably examined. The common error is a sign slip on a negative reciprocal, which converts a four-mark question into one mark and takes about ten minutes of teaching to fix permanently.

Geometry and circle theorems

Core and Extended

Angle facts, polygons, congruence, similarity and the circle theorems. Marks here depend on written reasoning, not on the answer. A correct angle with no theorem named scores less than a wrong angle with the right theorem quoted, and most students have never been told that explicitly.

Mensuration

Core and Extended

Area and perimeter of compound shapes, surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, cones, pyramids and spheres, and arc and sector work. Formula recall plus unit discipline. Cubic and square unit conversions - cm cubed to litres, m squared to cm squared - are where a confident student still drops two marks a paper.

Trigonometry

Core and Extended

Right-angled trigonometry, bearings, angles of elevation and depression, and at Extended the sine and cosine rules, the area formula and three-dimensional problems. Bearings questions fail on the diagram rather than the trigonometry: a three-figure bearing measured clockwise from north is a drawing skill, and it is teachable in one session.

Transformations and vectors

Extended mainly

Translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement including negative and fractional scale factors, plus column vectors, magnitude and vector geometry proofs. Students lose marks by describing a transformation incompletely - a rotation with no centre, an enlargement with no scale factor sign - rather than by performing it wrongly.

Probability

Core and Extended

Single and combined events, tree diagrams, conditional probability and set notation with Venn diagrams. The marks sit in the structure. A tree diagram drawn without replacement when the question said without replacement is almost all of the work; the multiplication afterwards is the easy part and is rarely where the error is.

Statistics

Core and Extended

Averages from grouped data, cumulative frequency, histograms with unequal class widths, box plots and scatter graphs with lines of best fit. Frequency density is the reliable trap: students plot frequency against an unequal class width and lose an entire eight-mark question that they understood conceptually.

Calculus and further algebra

Additional Maths 0606 and Further Pure 4PM1

Differentiation and integration of polynomials, stationary points, rates of change, the binomial expansion, the factor and remainder theorems and further trigonometric identities. This is the bridge into AS Level and into IB Analysis and Approaches, and notation matters here in a way it has not before.

Problem solving under time

All tiers

Not a syllabus strand but the thing that decides the grade. Reading a six-mark worded problem, choosing a method, and writing enough to earn method marks when the final answer is wrong. Most students have never been taught to leave a question after four minutes and come back, and it is worth more marks than another topic.

Calculator technique

0580 Paper 3 and 4, 4MA1 both papers

Fraction and surd modes, stored answers, table mode for checking, standard form input, and the habit of writing an unrounded intermediate value before rounding at the end. Premature rounding costs accuracy marks on nearly every statistics and trigonometry question, and no amount of topic revision fixes it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of buying maths help are available to an Al Reef family, and they do not cost the same thing for the same result. The comparison below is about where the money goes, not about which option sounds best.

Weekly one-to-one online

A fixed slot with the same tutor each week, delivered over live video with a shared whiteboard and the past paper open on screen. This is what IB Gram sells to UAE families. The hour is an hour of teaching because nobody drove anywhere, and the tutor is chosen for the syllabus code rather than for living within reach of the Sweihan road.

  • Same tutor each week, so the diagnosis carries forward
  • Written work photographed and marked between sessions
  • Slots from 17:00 Gulf Standard Time, after the Al Reef bus run
  • No travel premium folded into the hourly rate

A short diagnostic block before exams

Six to ten sessions aimed at a named paper rather than an open-ended retainer. The first session is a marked past paper and a topic list; the rest work down that list in order of marks available. For families whose child is broadly fine but dropped a grade in mocks, this is usually the correct purchase and the cheapest one.

  • Starts with a marked paper, not with a syllabus tour
  • Topic order set by marks at risk, highest first
  • Ends when the list is cleared rather than when a term ends
  • Suits the ten weeks before the June series

Two subjects, one schedule

Maths plus physics or maths plus chemistry, planned together so the week does not collapse. Many Al Reef households run two children on two syllabuses, and the scheduling is the part that fails first. Sessions are sequenced so that the heavier subject sits earlier in the evening and the lighter one later in the week.

  • Separate specialists, one coordinated timetable
  • Overlapping skills - rearranging formulae, standard form - taught once
  • Sibling slots placed back to back where it helps
  • Session timing shifts to post-Iftar during Ramadan

Holiday and resit intensives

Concentrated work in the winter and summer breaks, or between a disappointing result and the next available series. A resit decision has to be made within days of results, so the block is built around the entry deadline for the next sitting rather than around a comfortable number of weeks.

  • Blocks of three to five sessions a week for a fixed period
  • Built backwards from the entry deadline, not forwards from today
  • Covers private-candidate entry logistics where the school will not enter a resit
  • Pauses during the exam fortnight itself

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Reef

01

What an IGCSE maths tutor costs around Al Reef, in AED

A qualified subject tutor working online in the UAE is priced at roughly AED 150-300 an hour. An in-home one-to-one visit is quoted at AED 180-500, and a named IB or IGCSE specialist at AED 200-450 and upward. Those are market bands, not an IB Gram price list, and every one of them is attributable to a published source rather than to a guess.

The spread is wider than most parents expect because three different things are being sold under one word. At the bottom, from about AED 45-150, sit university students and generalist online platforms - EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour, Tutopiya from around AED 33-52. In the middle, from about AED 150, sit qualified subject teachers; Unitors publishes IGCSE tutoring from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. At the top, TutorChase quotes around AED 270 and BartyED around AED 650 for premium examiner-led work. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai rate table puts in-home visits at AED 180-350 and independent home tutors at AED 200-500.

Monthly packages behave differently again. Around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions appears repeatedly in this market, against AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. For an Al Reef family the useful comparison is not hourly but monthly, because that is how the household budget is actually organised.

What a parent should take from the table is the shape rather than any single number. The difference between the budget band and the qualified band buys subject knowledge. The difference between the qualified online band and the in-home band buys driving. One of those is worth paying for in a maths exam year and the other is a logistics cost dressed as a quality signal. IB Gram does not publish an hourly price on this page because the sensible first step is a free trial lesson and a conversation about which paper your child is entered for.

Where an Al Reef maths budget leaks

  • Ask what the hourly rate includes before asking what it is
  • Refuse two-hour slots for a Year 11 unless there is a specific reason
  • Confirm the tier and the syllabus code before the first paid session
  • Treat a marked past paper as the purchase order for everything after it

Most families who feel tutoring did not work did not buy bad tutoring. They bought the right tutoring in the wrong shape. Six leaks account for nearly all of it, and every one is visible on an invoice before the money is spent.

The first is the travel premium. An in-home visit out past the airport road carries thirty to forty minutes of driving each way, and a tutor who does not charge for it will instead price the session at the top of the range or decline the booking. The second is session length: two-hour slots are sold because they are easier to schedule, but a Year 11 working on non-calculator algebra stops absorbing anything after about seventy minutes. The third is tier blindness - paying for a year of Extended preparation for a student the school will enter at Core, or the reverse, which is the single most expensive error on this list.

The fourth is the group room. A class of eight moves at the median student, and if your child's gap is frequency density while the median gap is factorising, four of those hours teach nothing your child needed. The fifth is marking you already own. Schools in the Khalifa City cluster mark past papers as part of normal teaching, and paying a tutor at AED 250 an hour to mark a paper rather than to teach from a marked paper converts specialist time into clerical time. The sixth is the standing retainer. A year-long weekly slot booked in September for a June series means thirty-odd sessions, most of them before the mock that would have told you what to work on.

The counter-move is unglamorous. Get the syllabus code and the tier off the statement of entry. Get one full past paper marked properly, question by question, with the marks lost attributed to topics. Buy hours against that list, highest marks first, and stop when the list is clear. That is usually a shorter and cheaper engagement than the one a family would have booked on instinct, which is why almost nobody in this market recommends it.

Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1: settle this before you buy an hour

Abu Dhabi's British-curriculum schools do not all enter for the same maths qualification, and the two dominant options reward different preparation. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 sits one paper without a calculator. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) allows a calculator on both. That one difference changes what an hour of tutoring should be spent on, and a tutor who does not ask which board your child sits is telling you how the hour will go.

On 0580 the non-calculator paper is where grades move. Fraction arithmetic, surds, indices, standard form by hand, reverse percentages and bounds all have to be fluent, because there is no device to absorb a slip. Students who are conceptually strong and arithmetically rusty lose a grade on that paper and nowhere else, and they are the easiest students in this market to help: four or five sessions of timed non-calculator drilling moves them, and no new content is taught at all.

On 4MA1 the pressure sits elsewhere. With a calculator permitted throughout, the examiner tests whether a student can decode a multi-step worded problem and write enough working to earn method marks when the final figure is wrong. The failure mode is a page with an answer on it and no visible reasoning. Preparation for 4MA1 therefore spends its hours on structure and communication rather than on mental arithmetic, and the tiering differs too: Foundation awards 5 to 1, Higher awards 9 to 4 with an allowed 3.

Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics 0607 is the third possibility, common where a school runs the Middle Years Programme into Year 11. It adds an investigation or modelling paper that 0580 materials do not prepare a student for at all. Check the code on the statement of entry, and check the board's own published syllabus page rather than a tutoring site's summary, including this one. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who misses an exam after using the wrong zone timetable, so the school's version of the timetable is the one that counts.

04

The non-calculator paper is where the money goes

  • Ask for errors to be logged by type - sign, rounding, method, reading - not by topic
  • A fluency problem shows as right method, wrong number; a knowledge problem shows as a blank
  • Non-calculator accuracy work has to be timed or it does not transfer to the paper
  • Calculator technique is usually worth one session and is almost never taught at school

If your child sits 0580 and came home with a mock grade below expectation, the probability is high that the loss is concentrated on the non-calculator paper and that the cause is fluency rather than understanding. This is the most common and most tractable problem in IGCSE maths, and it is worth describing precisely because it is also the one most often treated with the wrong remedy.

What it looks like in a marked script: the method is right and the number is wrong. A reverse percentage treated as a forward percentage. A negative sign lost in expanding a bracket. A fraction division turned into a multiplication without flipping. Surds left unsimplified and then marked wrong on the final form. Standard form with the index off by one. Each costs between one and four marks, none of them indicates a gap in understanding, and together across a paper they routinely add up to a grade.

The wrong remedy is to reteach the topics. A student who can explain reverse percentages does not need a lesson on reverse percentages; they need twenty of them under time with a pen and no device. The right remedy is short, repetitive, timed, and boring, which is why tutors who are paid by the hour do not always propose it. Four sessions of mixed non-calculator work, with the errors logged by type rather than by topic, will usually show a measurable change in accuracy, and the log is the thing that tells a parent whether the money is working.

The same logic applies in reverse on the calculator paper. There, marks go missing to premature rounding, to answers written without working, and to calculator technique nobody ever taught - fraction mode, stored values, table mode as a checking tool. Neither problem is content. Both are habits. Habits are cheaper to fix than knowledge, and a family that understands the distinction will spend a fraction of what a family that assumes the worst will spend.

05

Counting backwards from the June series

Nobody in this market publishes a calendar, which is odd, because the calendar decides everything about what a family should buy and when. UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series. The February/March Cambridge series is offered to India only, so it has no bearing on an Al Reef child and any page that quotes it to you has not checked.

Work backwards instead of forwards. The written papers are the fixed point. Before them sits the school's internal revision period and the mock window. Before that, and this is the deadline families forget, sits the final entry date, when the tier is locked and the argument about Core or Extended becomes academic. Before that sits the decision itself, which should be made on evidence - one full past paper marked at each tier - rather than on a teacher's instinct in October.

After the papers, the clock keeps running. Pearson's June 2026 International GCSE results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026; its November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. A family using November as a resit route is therefore waiting into the new year for a grade, which matters if a sixth-form or university application depends on it. The resit entry itself has its own deadline, usually weeks after results arrive, which is why a resit decision is made in days rather than in weeks.

Two practical rules follow. First, book tutoring against a milestone rather than against a term: ten weeks before the written papers is a meaningful block, a standing slot from September is mostly insurance. Second, take every date from the board's live timetable rather than from a tutoring page. Pearson publishes a provisional timetable ahead of each series and revises it; Cambridge publishes by administrative zone and warns that using the wrong zone's timetable is the candidate's risk.

Online, in-home or a group room: the arithmetic from Al Reef

The home-tutor question deserves a straight answer rather than a redirect. In-home one-to-one tutoring in Abu Dhabi is a real service, widely available, and for some families the right purchase. Published rates for it run roughly AED 180-500 an hour, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions are advertised at AED 1,599-1,799. What that premium buys is a person in the room: a child who will not open a laptop may well open a book for someone sitting at the table.

What it costs, out past the airport road, is tutor choice. The pool of people willing to drive to Al Reef on a weekday evening is small, and the pool who have taught 0580 Extended non-calculator work to grade-9 standard, or 0607's investigation paper, is smaller still. A family optimising for proximity is choosing from a short list; a family optimising for the paper is choosing from a long one. For maths specifically, where the diagnosis is paper-driven and the work is done on a shared screen with a past paper open, the case for proximity is weaker than in almost any other subject.

IB Gram's position is plain: home visits are not a service we sell anywhere in the UAE - that is offered only in India - and lessons for Al Reef families are delivered one-to-one over live video. Nobody will arrive at an Al Reef address from us. The reason to accept that is not loyalty, it is the trade in the table below: the travel premium removed from the rate, the whole hour spent teaching, a tutor matched to the syllabus code, and a session that can start at 17:00 because nobody is sitting on the airport road.

Group classes are the third option and the one most often bought on price alone. A tuition centre room of six to eight students is cheaper per hour than anything else here, and for a student whose gaps match the room's median it works. For a student with a specific, identifiable weakness - frequency density, bearings, reverse percentages - most of that time is spent watching other people's problems being solved. The honest version of the group-class pitch is that it is good value for broad coverage and poor value for targeted repair.

What a maths tutor may and may not touch

  • Teaching, modelling, marking and feedback on the student's own work: in scope
  • Producing, drafting or completing anything that is submitted for assessment: never
  • Board materials are cited and linked, not reproduced and distributed
  • Examiner status is not claimed without evidence and never implies access to marking

Maths at IGCSE carries less assessed coursework than most subjects, which makes the honesty boundary easier to state and no less important. A tutor teaches, explains, demonstrates, sets practice, marks it and gives feedback. A tutor does not produce work that is submitted as the student's own. That line is not a house style, it is the condition on which a qualification remains worth having.

In practice the pressure points are specific. Where a syllabus includes an investigation or modelling paper, as 0607 does, a tutor may teach the techniques, work through a published example and critique a student's draft reasoning. A tutor may not supply the investigation. Where a student moves on to IB Diploma Mathematics, the Internal Assessment exploration raises the same question with higher stakes: coaching on topic viability, on mathematical depth and on the criteria is legitimate, and anything resembling an exploration written for the student is a malpractice finding against the child.

This matters commercially because the market is not clean. One operator found in this sector sells completed Internal Assessments outright, at a price, to students. A family handing over money for that is buying their child an academic-integrity investigation and risking the qualification itself. Any provider who answers the question will you write it for me with anything other than a flat no should be removed from the shortlist on that basis alone.

Two further boundaries are worth a parent's attention. Official syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the boards; a tutor should cite and link them rather than hand over reproduced copies. And a tutor should not be described as a current examiner unless that status can be evidenced, nor should examiner status be used to imply any access to marking, boundaries or unseen paper content. None of these is a hard question. All of them are questions worth asking in a first conversation.

ADEK, the permit, and what an Al Reef parent can actually verify

  • ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of Abu Dhabi private schools and publishes inspection outcomes
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • No fine amount for unpermitted tutoring is published, so no figure should be quoted
  • IB Gram has no UAE office, centre or branch and claims no regulator accreditation

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are supervised by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which the UAE government describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK publishes its own inspection outcomes, which is the place to read a school's rating - not a tutoring page. Dubai's equivalent is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Sharjah's is the Sharjah Private Education Authority, and the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Almost no competitor page in this market names ADEK at all.

Tutoring itself is regulated separately and by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, to government and private-sector employees, to unemployed residents, to university students and to school students aged 15 to 18. The official route is MoHRE's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Anyone tutoring without the permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

Two Abu Dhabi-specific points follow. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. So the offer that sounds most attractive - your child's own maths teacher, privately, for a fee - is the one to decline. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before treating that as settled.

A tutoring business with premises and staff is a different legal animal again: in Dubai that requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no regulator permit of that kind and makes no claim to one; it is an online tutor-matching platform with no office, centre or branch in the UAE. What a parent can verify is narrow but real - the permit position of an individual tutor, the school's rating on ADEK's listing, the syllabus on the board's own page, and the timetable on the board's own PDF. That list is short, and it is longer than what most pages in this search result will give you.

Maths, equivalency and the five-subject rule

Families in Al Reef planning a UAE university route eventually meet Ministry of Education equivalency, and maths is usually one of the subjects that decides it. On the British track, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and must submit proof of either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

The detail that trips people up is which subjects count. Arabic and Islamic Education are not included among the five required subjects. One competitor page currently ranking in this market tells UAE parents that six IGCSE subjects are required, which is wrong, and it is the kind of error a family acts on by paying for an extra subject's tutoring. The published rule is five, Arabic and Islamic Education excluded, and the authority's own page is where to confirm it.

On the American track the requirements are structured differently: English proficiency via a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics via at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. For the IB Diploma there is no figure published here and none should be taken from a tutoring page; confirm any IB points threshold on the Ministry's own site or with the emirate's attestation authority.

Two cautions belong with this. Equivalency and attestation are processes a family completes with the authority, not something a tutoring platform performs or guarantees on their behalf - IB Gram describes the rule and points at the official channel, nothing more. And tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression. Anyone framing it that way is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process, which is a reason to be sceptical of the rest of what they tell you.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Reef

Al Reef sits on its own, out past the airport, and that geography is the whole argument for buying tutoring online rather than locally. The communities below are the ones an Al Reef family competes with for a tutor's evening slots, and the drive times between them are what gets priced into an in-home rate.

Al Reef Villas and Al Reef Downtown

Four villa precincts and an apartment ring, built for families who wanted space at a lower price than the island. School buses leave early and return late, which pushes the realistic start time for a weekday session to around 17:00 or later.

Khalifa City

Where most Al Reef children go to school, and the nearest concentration of British-curriculum classrooms. A tutor driving from Khalifa City to Al Reef and back spends the better part of an hour in the car, and that hour appears in the rate whether it is itemised or not.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

An established villa and waterfront cluster with its own IB and British schools. Rates quoted to Al Raha families are often higher than those quoted to Al Reef families for the same tutor, which tells you how much of a local rate is really about distance.

Yas Island

Newer family housing with schools attached to the development. Yas sessions compete for the same 17:00 to 19:00 window, and tutors who take a Yas booking first will offer Al Reef a less convenient slot or a higher price.

Al Reem Island

High-density towers with a growing school presence. A tutor working towers can fit three in-home sessions into an evening because the travel between them is a lift ride; in Al Reef the same tutor manages one, and prices accordingly.

Saadiyat Island

The premium end of the Abu Dhabi school market, and where the highest in-home quotes in the emirate are observed. Useful as a benchmark: if a tutor quotes an Al Reef family a Saadiyat rate, the quote is about the driving, not about the maths.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community with several international schools and a deep pool of resident teachers. It is the closest thing Al Reef has to a local supply of subject tutors, though specialist cover for 0607 or 0606 thins out quickly.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods with long-established schools. For an Al Reef family these are a 30 to 40 minute drive each way in the evening, which is why island-based tutors rarely offer this community a weekday slot at all.

Shakhbout City and Al Shamkha

Mainland growth areas on the same side of the airport road as Al Reef. Convenient on a map, but they draw from the same thin pool of local maths specialists, so availability rather than price is the binding constraint.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Reef

Al Reef and the airport road

The schools closest to home for this community. Proximity decides the bus route and the time the school day ends, which is what really determines when a maths session can start on a weekday.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the statement of entry, not a description

The first useful message from an Al Reef parent contains the syllabus code and the tier - 0580 Extended, 4MA1 Higher, 0607 Core. That single line does more to shape the plan than a paragraph about how the term has gone, because it fixes which papers exist and what the ceiling is.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, before anything is paid

One trial session per student, with no card details taken to book it. The tutor spends it on diagnosis rather than on introduction: a short set of questions across strands, worked while the student explains the reasoning aloud, which is how fluency problems separate themselves from knowledge gaps.

  3. 03

One past paper, marked by question

Before the plan exists, a full paper is sat under exam timing and marked question by question, with every lost mark attributed to a strand and an error type. The output is a ranked list of marks at risk. That list is the purchase order for every session after it.

  4. 04

Hours bought against the list, highest marks first

Sessions work down the ranked list rather than through the syllabus. A strand worth eighteen marks across two papers is worked before one worth four, regardless of which feels more urgent. Written work is photographed between sessions and marked, so the following hour starts from evidence.

  5. 05

    Re-test, then stop

After the top items are cleared, a second paper is sat and marked the same way. If the list is clear, the engagement ends rather than continuing on a monthly default. If it is not, the remaining items are re-ranked. Either way a parent sees the same measure twice, which is the only honest progress report available.

  6. 06

If the specialist is not free, you are told

Cover for 0607's investigation paper or 0606 calculus is thinner than cover for 0580 Extended. Where no suitable tutor has an evening slot that works from Al Reef, that is stated plainly along with when one is expected, rather than filling the slot with whoever is available.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The rate is published, even though it is not ours

This page prints the AED bands the UAE market charges, with each band attributed to the competitor or rate table that published it. Three of the six pages ranking for searches like this one publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars - a currency no Abu Dhabi family transacts in.

Matched to the syllabus code, not the postcode

Because delivery is online, the tutor is chosen from everyone who teaches 0580, 0607, 0606 or 4MA1 rather than from the smaller group willing to drive out past the airport. For a subject diagnosed from a marked paper and taught on a shared screen, that trade favours the paper every time.

No travel premium inside the hour

In-home rates in Abu Dhabi are quoted at AED 180-500 an hour partly because driving is inside the figure. Removing the drive removes that component and returns the full sixty minutes to teaching. The session can also start at 17:00 Gulf Standard Time, which an evening drive from Khalifa City cannot reliably manage.

Error logs, not progress adjectives

Marks lost are recorded by strand and by error type - sign slip, premature rounding, no method shown, question misread. A parent gets a list that changes between two marked papers rather than a sentence about confidence. It is less comfortable reading and considerably more useful.

The honesty boundary is stated, not implied

A tutor teaches, marks and gives feedback on the student's own work and produces none of it. Given that at least one operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments, the boundary is worth printing rather than assuming. It is also the reason a qualification keeps its value.

Short engagements are proposed on purpose

A diagnostic block aimed at a named paper is usually the right purchase and is cheaper than the standing retainer a family would otherwise book. Recommending fewer hours is against the commercial interest of an hourly business, which is roughly why so little of this market does it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Reef: your questions answered

How much should an Al Reef family budget per hour for IGCSE maths?+

Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online in the UAE run roughly AED 150-300 an hour. Unitors publishes IGCSE tutoring from AED 150, TutorChase quotes around AED 270, and Bestimate's rate table puts named IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above. Budget online options start lower - EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65. Those are the market's figures, not an IB Gram price list. For planning, the monthly number matters more than the hourly one: a weekly one-hour session sits around AED 600-1,200 a month in the qualified band.

Is a group maths class better value for my child than one-to-one?+

It depends entirely on whether your child's gaps match the room's. A tuition centre class of six to eight is the cheapest option per hour and works well for broad pre-mock coverage. If the specific problem is frequency density on histograms or three-figure bearings, most of those hours are spent watching other students' problems being solved. The test is simple: if you can name the three strands costing your child marks, buy one-to-one time against them. If you cannot name them, a marked past paper is a cheaper next step than either option.

Why does an in-home maths tutor out past the airport road cost more?+

Because the drive is inside the rate. Al Reef is thirty to forty minutes from the Khalifa City and island clusters where most tutors are based, each way, so a tutor who accepts the run either prices at the upper end of the published AED 180-500 in-home band or fits only one session into the evening and charges accordingly. Tower communities like Al Reem allow three in-home sessions a night because travel is a lift ride. Nothing about that premium relates to how well someone teaches 0580 Extended.

Which 0580 paper is my child most likely losing marks on?+

Statistically the non-calculator paper, and usually for fluency rather than understanding. The marked script shows right method and wrong number: a reverse percentage computed forwards, a sign lost expanding brackets, a fraction division not flipped, standard form with the index off by one. Each costs one to four marks and together they add up to a grade. The remedy is short and dull - timed mixed non-calculator work with errors logged by type - and it is cheaper than reteaching topics the student already understands. Ask for the mock script before buying anything.

Where on my child's paperwork is the maths syllabus code printed?+

The statement of entry from the school carries the syllabus code, and that sheet is the only authoritative answer. Cambridge codes look like 0580, 0607 or 0606; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths A is 4MA1 and Further Pure is 4PM1. The difference is not cosmetic: 0580 sits one paper without a calculator, while 4MA1 permits one on both papers, so the preparation differs from the first session. If the school has not issued the statement yet, the head of mathematics will tell you, and it is worth asking before paying for an hour.

Should my child be entered at Core or Extended in Cambridge maths?+

Decide it on evidence, not instinct. Core is capped at grade C and sits a shorter pair of papers; Extended reaches A* and demands more content and more algebraic fluency. The sensible test is one full past paper at each tier, marked properly, before the school's internal entry deadline. A student scoring poorly on Extended but comfortably at Core may finish with a better outcome at Core; a student near the Core ceiling is wasting a grade there. Once final entries are lodged the decision is locked, which is why the paper has to be sat early.

How many weeks of maths tutoring do Al Reef families typically pay for?+

The purchase most families make is a weekly slot from September to June, which is thirty-odd sessions, most of them bought before any diagnosis existed. The purchase that usually works is a block of six to ten sessions timed to the mock result, worked against a ranked list of marks at risk, ending when the list clears. A short block costs a fraction of a year-long retainer. Recommending fewer hours is against the interest of an hourly business, which is part of why this market rarely suggests it.

Is Additional Mathematics 0606 worth paying for alongside 0580?+

It is worth it when the destination needs it. 0606 introduces differentiation, integration, the binomial expansion and the factor and remainder theorems, and it genuinely eases the move into AS Level Mathematics or IB Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. Schools usually run it as an option set or an after-school class, so teaching time per topic is thin and the support load falls at home. For most families a short block on calculus notation and technique is better value than a standing weekly slot across the whole syllabus.

Can one tutor cover maths and physics for the same child?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, because the overlap is real: rearranging formulae, standard form, graph gradients and unit discipline appear in both and can be taught once. Where the physics requirement is specific - practical and data-handling skills, or a particular paper's extended response style - a second specialist is usually the better purchase even though it complicates the week. What matters more than the number of tutors is that both work to the right syllabus codes and that the sessions are sequenced so the heavier subject sits earlier in the evening.

What happens to our maths sessions during Ramadan?+

Session times move. School days shorten across the UAE and household routines shift, so the standard adjustment is to run sessions after Iftar rather than in the late afternoon, or to move them to a weekend slot. Because lessons are delivered online there is no drive to plan around, which makes a post-Iftar slot genuinely workable rather than theoretical. Families who are travelling for part of the month usually pause and resume rather than attempt a reduced schedule, and the plan is rebuilt from the exam date on return.

Does my child need a maths tutor who actually lives in Abu Dhabi?+

For maths, rarely. The subject is diagnosed from a marked past paper and taught on a shared screen with that paper open, so what matters is whether the tutor marks 0580 Extended non-calculator work or 0607 investigations routinely. Insisting on an Abu Dhabi address narrows the pool to people within driving distance of Al Reef, which is a short list. Local knowledge matters for school deadlines and timing, and that is held in the plan rather than in the tutor's postcode. Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time regardless.

Is a tutor allowed to help with assessed maths coursework or an investigation?+

A tutor may teach the techniques, work through a published example, and give feedback on the student's own draft reasoning. A tutor may not produce the work. That distinction holds for the 0607 investigation and modelling paper and, later, for the IB Diploma Mathematics exploration, where a piece written by someone else is an academic-integrity finding against the student rather than against the tutor. At least one operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright. Any provider who does not answer this question with a flat refusal should come off the shortlist.

Which five IGCSE subjects does MoE equivalency count for an Al Reef student?+

On the British track a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, and maths is almost always one of them. Arabic and Islamic Education are not counted among those five. One page currently ranking in this market states that six subjects are required, which is wrong and could cost a family a year of unnecessary tutoring. A further requirement sits above it: one A Level at grade E or better, or two AS Levels at the same grade. Confirm all of it with the Ministry directly.

How can I check that a private maths tutor in Abu Dhabi is permitted to teach?+

Ask whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and covers school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The application route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. Tutoring without it carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no schedule of amounts is published. Separately, ADEK's ethics rules have been reported as barring school staff from tutoring students enrolled at their own school.

When should we start if the June series is the target?+

Work backwards from the written papers rather than forwards from today. A ten-week block before the papers, built on a marked mock script, is a meaningful intervention. Earlier than that, the useful work is the tier decision - one full paper sat at each tier before the school's internal entry deadline - because once final entries are lodged the ceiling is fixed. If you are inside six weeks, the plan narrows to full papers under timing plus the two or three strands carrying the most marks, and it is still worth doing.

What does the free trial maths lesson actually include?+

One session per student, booked without card details, spent on diagnosis rather than introduction. The tutor works a short set of questions across number, algebra, trigonometry and statistics while the student explains the reasoning aloud, which is how a fluency problem separates itself from a knowledge gap. You get back the strands at risk and a view on whether a short block or a longer engagement fits. If the answer is that your child's school marking already covers it, you are told that too.

Start with one marked paper, then decide what to buy

The cheapest useful thing an Al Reef family can do about IGCSE maths costs nothing: find the syllabus code on the statement of entry, get the mock script, and have the lost marks attributed to strands and error types. Everything sensible follows from that list, including the possibility that a short block is enough and a year-long retainer was never needed. Book the free trial lesson, bring the code and the script, and the first conversation will be about which three strands are costing the most marks rather than about how many hours to sell you. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, from after the school run.
