IB Home Tutor in Al Reef

An IB home tutor in Al Reef is working against two things at once: one of the longest school runs in Abu Dhabi, and a Diploma week that already contains six subjects plus the core. IB Gram operates no home visits in the UAE, so nothing here depends on a car reaching Al Reef by half past four. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which is how a community this far from the island gets a subject specialist at a workable hour.

  • Slots after the real bus arrival, including a dependable post-20:00 window
  • Matched by Diploma course and level, not by subject name
  • Internal assessment work planned from your school's own internal dates

IB & IGCSE in Al Reef

A long bus route and a full Diploma week: what actually fits in Al Reef

Al Reef sits out towards the airport, and the daily consequence is distance. Most secondary students here travel out of the community for school, often towards Khalifa City and Al Raha and sometimes across to the island, and the bus that serves several villages in sequence arrives when it arrives. A realistic home-arrival range across Al Reef runs from late afternoon into the early evening depending on the route, and the family's measured arrival time is the only number worth planning a tutoring slot from.

Against that sits a Diploma week. Six subjects, three normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, with internal assessment deadlines in most of the six landing in the same two or three months. A Higher Level subject carries roughly 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard, and that difference is absorbed by evenings rather than by the timetable. Adding tutoring to this is a scheduling decision before it is an educational one.

The in-home version of this does not work well from Al Reef, and the reason is arithmetic rather than attitude. A tutor driving out here from Khalidiyah or Al Reem Island commits most of an evening to one paid hour, so they either price it accordingly or take the booking and then drop it when a client nearer home appears. Market rates for in-home one-to-one tuition in Abu Dhabi run AED 180 to 350 an hour in Bestimate's 2026 survey, with independents reaching AED 500, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor.

Online delivery does not shorten the bus route, but it stops the bus route choosing the tutor. A household whose child is home at 17:00 can hold a slot at 17:30. A household on a longer route can hold a slot after 20:00 and keep it for a full term, because moving a session to the following evening costs nobody a journey. Both windows cost the same, which is not true when somebody has to arrive, and the pool of available teaching is the set of people who know the course rather than the set who will drive to Al Reef.

What follows is a planning guide for a Diploma household. It sets out the realistic session windows from here, what a six-subject week actually contains and where the pressure points fall, which Diploma components respond to a weekly hour and which do not, how internal assessment season is counted backwards across several subjects at once, and when the core components have to be started. IB Gram provides no home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tutors are a service offered only in India. What reaches your child is a shared whiteboard with their own draft or script open on it, at an hour the bus does not get to vote on.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programmes matter for an Al Reef family: the Diploma itself, the Middle Years Programme that precedes it at the continuum schools in the corridor, and the IGCSE route a large share of students arrive from. Each produces a different Year 12 starting point.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across the groups, three normally at Higher Level, with internal assessment carrying real weight in every one. Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS sit outside the six and compete for the same evenings. The year is governed by school internal deadlines rather than by anything the board publishes, which is the single most useful thing a parent can learn early.

UAE schools sit the May session. No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date that a family acts on is worse than no date. Ask your school's IB coordinator for the written internal deadline calendar at the start of Year 12; every sensible plan for the next two years is counted backwards from it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Criterion-referenced assessment against four criteria per subject, graded 1 to 8, with no terminal written papers in most schools. Students arrive in the Diploma comfortable with investigation and extended writing, and underpowered on speed and accuracy under time pressure, particularly in mathematics and the sciences.

The continuum schools serving this corridor run MYP to Year 11, so a reasonable share of the local Diploma cohort has never sat a formal terminal paper before Year 12. That gap is predictable and short, and the summer before Year 12 is the cheapest time in the whole two years to close it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and International GCSE

The British-track feeder, taught in this corridor as Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel. Students arrive with solid paper technique and procedural accuracy, and with no experience of independent assessed writing, which is why the first internal assessment and the Extended Essay feel like a different subject rather than a different task.

Students who sat Additional Mathematics 0606 arrive with most of the Analysis and Approaches entry gap already closed. Students who sat Core tier in a subject they now want at Higher Level need honest advice in Year 11 rather than encouragement, because that conversation is far cheaper before the course selection than after it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma subjects as Al Reef families actually request them, with a note on where the marks are rather than a description of the course. The useful question for each is whether a weekly hour changes anything.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebraic route, with Standard Level Paper 1 sat without a calculator. Higher Level adds proof, complex numbers, vectors and considerably harder calculus, and it is the hardest Diploma course to staff from any single Abu Dhabi community.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics led, calculator permitted throughout, with matrices and graph theory added at Higher Level. Students who chose it as the lighter option generally need statistics support rather than algebra support, which is a different tutor.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and the energetics calculations decide most grades. The internal assessment needs a research question narrow enough to generate usable data, and a topic that cannot do that caps the mark whatever the write-up looks like.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and fields carry the papers, and the usual failure is mathematical rather than conceptual. Uncertainty handling and graph analysis are routinely under-taught and quick to fix, which makes them good value for a limited number of hours.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-heavy and largely learnable alone, so paid hours are best spent on extended-response structure and on internal assessment design. A well-written report on a flawed experiment still loses the design marks.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and command-term discipline decide the grade, and an evaluate question answered with explanation scores a fraction of the credit. Gulf examples are legitimate, memorable and under-used by candidates in this region.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application rather than recall, with the internal assessment requiring real organisational material. Students who write about a company without usable information spend weeks producing something the criteria cannot reward.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 unseen analysis and the individual oral carry the course. The oral rewards a global issue that is genuinely arguable, and structure is far more teachable than reading taste, which is where most of the recoverable marks sit.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay, both marked against published criteria and both routinely started too late. Almost nobody advertises it because it is nobody's degree subject, so a match takes longer than for a named subject.

The Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words maximum, with a school supervisor. Legitimate support is narrowing the research question, interrogating method and checking referencing. The writing is the student's entirely, and that boundary is worth confirming with any provider up front.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover Diploma support from a community this far out, and the choice is usually settled by the bus rather than the budget. All three run over live video, with nobody travelling to a UAE address.

Weekly hour on one subject

One fixed hour a week on the single subject where marks are most recoverable, tracking the school's scheme of work rather than a parallel syllabus. Across two years the tutor learns which topics the student rebuilds from first principles and which are memorised and brittle, and that knowledge is what makes Year 13 revision accurate rather than generic.

  • Follows the school's sequence and uses the school's own problem sets
  • Same tutor across both years wherever scheduling allows
  • Written note after each session naming the topic and the next target
  • Held through mock weeks for a review rather than dropped

Internal assessment season block

A bounded block across the two or three months when internal assessment deadlines in several subjects land together. Work is sequenced by deadline rather than by subject importance, which is the only ordering that prevents the last deadline being met with whatever time is left over.

  • Sequenced from the school's written internal deadline calendar
  • Criteria and word or page limits confirmed before drafting starts
  • Drafts marked against descriptors, with nothing rewritten by the tutor
  • Ends when the deadlines pass, with no automatic continuation

Core components: Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Separate from subject support, because the core is where Al Reef families most often run out of time. Work is criteria coaching and question interrogation rather than content teaching, and it is scheduled early, since neither component can be rescued in its final fortnight.

  • Research question or prescribed title stress-tested before work begins
  • Word limits planned into the outline, not applied as cuts at the end
  • Argument structure taught; every sentence written by the student
  • Referencing checked before the school's submission date

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Reef

01

What time a Diploma session can start from Al Reef

Begin with the bus rather than the bell. Schools serving this corridor finish in the middle of the afternoon, but a route that collects several Al Reef villages in sequence completes considerably later, and the airport-road traffic in the returning direction is worse than the outbound run. Across the community a realistic arrival range is late afternoon into early evening, and the only reliable figure is the one you measure yourself over five consecutive days.

That measurement decides which of two windows you are working with. If your child is consistently home by around 17:00, a 17:30 start is dependable and is the better of the two for new content, because the school lesson is still recent and the day's worksheet can be the material. If arrival regularly runs past 17:30, the honest answer is the post-20:00 window, and the content has to be chosen for it: criteria work, past-paper sections, data analysis, technique drills rather than first teaching.

What ruins arrangements here is booking the window a family would prefer rather than the one it has. A 16:30 slot chosen on an optimistic estimate gets shortened twice and cancelled twice, and by the fourth disruption the continuity that made the arrangement worth anything has gone. Because nobody travels to Al Reef for these lessons, changing a slot costs nothing and can be done in a message, which means the correct response to two cancellations is to move the hour rather than defend it.

What a six-subject Diploma week actually contains

Parents consistently underestimate the Diploma's load, and the reason is that the timetable hides it. Six subjects look comparable to eight IGCSE subjects until you notice that three of them are Higher Level, carrying roughly 240 taught hours each against 150 at Standard, and that the extra ninety hours per subject are absorbed by evenings rather than by lesson time. Then add three core components that appear on no timetable at all.

The pressure is also unevenly distributed through the year. The autumn of Year 12 is comparatively open, which is why it is the right place to put foundation work and the Extended Essay research question. The spring of Year 12 begins the internal assessment sequence. The autumn of Year 13 is the worst period in the whole programme, with several internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay all converging while mock examinations approach. The spring of Year 13 is revision, by which point anything unfinished is a liability.

A tutoring plan that ignores that shape spends evenly and helps least where help is most needed. The useful pattern is light in the autumn of Year 12, one steady weekly hour through the spring, a bounded intensive block in the autumn of Year 13 aimed at internal assessment and core deadlines, and a revision block in the final term. For an Al Reef household with a long bus route, the Year 13 autumn block is also the hardest period to schedule, which is another argument for arranging it a term ahead rather than in the week it becomes urgent.

03

Which Diploma components respond to a weekly hour

Not every part of the Diploma improves at the same rate per hour spent, and knowing which parts do is how a family with one usable evening slot gets value out of it. The components that respond fastest share a feature: they are governed by published criteria or by a specific technique, so there is a defined target and a way to check whether it has been hit. The ones that respond slowest are broad content loads, which need the student's own study time rather than a tutor's hour.

Internal assessments respond strongly, particularly at the design stage, because a research question that cannot generate the required analysis caps the mark permanently and no later effort recovers it. One hour spent stress-testing a question is worth more than five spent improving a write-up built on a weak one. Paper technique responds strongly too: command-term discipline, showing method, timing and question selection are all trainable in a few weeks and all visible immediately in a marked script.

Content coverage responds slowly, and that is the honest answer even though it is the thing families most often ask for. A Higher Level subject's content load is too large for a weekly hour to deliver, and attempting it produces a tutor racing through material the student then has no time to consolidate. The better arrangement is for the tutor to diagnose which content gaps matter, teach the two or three that are blocking everything else, and hand the rest back as a structured study plan the student runs alone.

Internal assessment season, counted backwards across subjects

The single most useful document in a Diploma family's possession is the school's written internal deadline calendar, and most families do not have it. It lists when drafts and final submissions are due for each subject's internal assessment, and because those dates are set by the school rather than the board they are the dates that actually bind. Ask the IB coordinator for it in writing at the start of Year 12, not in the term it becomes urgent.

With that calendar, the planning is mechanical. List the deadlines in date order rather than by subject. Work backwards from each one through revision, first full draft, completed analysis, data collection and topic approval. Then look at where the backwards plans overlap, because that is where the real problem is: two subjects both needing data collection in the same fortnight, with the Extended Essay draft due in the middle of it. That collision is visible months ahead and invisible if the deadlines are only ever considered one at a time.

The sequencing rule that follows is simple and uncomfortable. Work on the earliest deadline first even when another subject feels more urgent, because a late submission is a penalty that no quality of work offsets. Where two deadlines genuinely collide, the subject whose internal assessment carries the larger share of its grade gets the better slot. For an Al Reef household this planning matters more than for a family closer in, because the available weekly hours are fewer and there is no capacity to absorb a surprise.

05

The core components, and when they have to start

  • Extended Essay: 4,000 words maximum, question settled in Year 12
  • Theory of Knowledge essay: 1,600 words maximum
  • Exhibition commentary: 950 words maximum; connect objects, do not describe them
  • Plan to the word limit at outline stage rather than cutting at the end
  • Expect a longer match for Theory of Knowledge than for a named subject
  • Verify all limits against the current subject guide via your school coordinator

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS appear on no subject timetable, carry no weekly homework, and are therefore the three things a busy Diploma student postpones. The cost of postponing them is not evenly distributed either: a late start on CAS is recoverable, a late start on the Extended Essay is expensive, and a late start on the Theory of Knowledge essay is the most common reason an otherwise strong candidate loses points in the core.

The Extended Essay is four thousand words maximum, and the research question decides most of the outcome. A question too broad produces description, a question too narrow produces no material, and both are visible at the outset to anybody who has supervised one before. The right time to settle it is the spring or summer of Year 12, when there is space to abandon a first idea. The wrong time is Year 13 autumn, when the student is committed to whatever they have and simultaneously facing several internal assessment deadlines.

The Theory of Knowledge essay, capped at sixteen hundred words, responds to a specific kind of preparation: understanding what the prescribed title is actually asking, which is rarely what it appears to ask. The exhibition commentary, capped at nine hundred and fifty words, fails most often because objects are described rather than connected to a knowledge question. Both reward criteria coaching far more than content teaching, and both are scarce as tutoring requests because Theory of Knowledge is nobody's degree subject, so a match takes longer than for a named subject. Verify every limit against the current subject guide through your coordinator.

06

In-home or online from a community this far out

Al Reef is the clearest case in the emirate for separating delivery from quality, because the distances make the trade-off explicit. An in-home tutor reaching here from the island or Khalidiyah is committing most of an evening to one hour, which has three consequences: the rate includes the journey, the slot is whatever suits their route rather than your bus, and the booking is vulnerable to being replaced by a client nearer their home. None of that is bad faith; it is how the economics work.

The pool is the second issue. Insisting on somebody who can reach Al Reef narrows the field to whoever lives within a workable drive and still has an evening free, and for a specific Diploma course that field can be empty. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Theory of Knowledge, and chemistry tied to an internal assessment deadline are the usual cases. A family is rarely told the pool is empty; they are offered the nearest person who agrees, and the gap appears three sessions later.

The honest counter-argument is that some students genuinely need an adult in the room, and where a professional has recommended in-person support, a local tutor is the right answer and the travel premium is money well spent. For an academic Diploma subject, a shared whiteboard with the school's own material open loses very little. The way to settle it is one free hour rather than a debate, and that hour can happen tonight rather than after somebody has driven out from the Corniche.

What a tutor may never do with assessed work

  • Nothing assessed drafted, rewritten or edited to submission by a tutor
  • Criteria and mark allocations taught before drafting begins
  • Techniques modelled on different data so they transfer rather than copy
  • Drafts marked against descriptors, naming the criterion at risk
  • Official syllabus material linked, never reproduced or supplied

The Diploma places more independent assessed work in a student's hands than any other school qualification in this market, and that makes the honesty boundary more consequential here than on the IGCSE side. Internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge components are all submitted as the student's own work, with declarations, and schools in this corridor run originality checks as a matter of routine. A malpractice finding falls on the candidate, not on whoever supplied the text.

At least one provider visible in UAE search results advertises completed Internal Assessments at a stated price. That is not a cheaper form of tutoring; it is a transaction in which the student carries all of the risk for a mark that can be withdrawn. No tutor may write, draft, rewrite or edit to submission any part of an assessed component, at any price and under any deadline, and a provider who will not state that plainly has answered a question you then do not need to ask twice.

What remains is the thing actually worth buying, and it is substantial. Teaching what each criterion credits and how many marks it carries. Stress-testing a research question before weeks go into it. Questioning a method until the student finds the weakness themselves. Modelling an analytical technique on entirely different data so it transfers rather than being copied. Marking a draft against the descriptors and naming the criterion at risk. Checking that referencing and data provenance will survive scrutiny. All of that moves marks legitimately and leaves the work demonstrably the student's own.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Reef

Journey length from Al Reef differs by destination, and that is what determines when a session can start. These notes are practical rather than descriptive.

Al Reef villages

Several village clusters served in sequence by the same bus routes, so the last stop can be well behind the first. Measure your own arrival rather than relying on the school's finishing time.

Al Reef Downtown

Apartment living with more dual-commute households, which pushes the dependable slot into the evening and makes a post-20:00 arrangement the realistic one.

Khalifa City

The nearest cluster of Diploma and British-track secondary provision, and the most common destination. These routes are among the more predictable from Al Reef.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Also common destinations, with dismissal-hour traffic on the airport road adding time specifically on the return leg.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Shares the mainland profile and the same late arrivals, and families in both communities often end up holding the same evening slots.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Island schools and the base for many experienced tutors. The longest daily journeys from Al Reef, and the reason in-home quotes out here carry a premium.

Yas Island and Saadiyat Island

Newer and long-established Diploma provision respectively, reached by the longest routes. Evening sessions are the only dependable option on these.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Measure the bus for a week

Note actual arrival times across five days rather than the school's finishing time. Al Reef routes serve several villages in sequence, so the gap between the first and last stop decides whether an afternoon slot is realistic or whether the evening window is the honest answer.

  2. 02

    Get the internal deadline calendar

Ask your school's IB coordinator in writing for the internal assessment and core deadline dates. Those are the dates that bind, they usually sit a term earlier than families expect, and every plan on this page is counted backwards from them.

  3. 03

Name the subject and the level

Chemistry at Higher Level, or Analysis and Approaches at Standard, plus the school. Higher and Standard are different courses with different papers, and a match made on the subject name alone is the usual cause of a wasted first month.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial hour

One hour over live video, no card details and no commitment, worked on your child's own material: a marked script, a draft, or the criteria for an upcoming internal assessment. You are testing whether the explanation lands and whether the syllabus knowledge is real.

  5. 05

    Review at four sessions

Compare against whatever started the plan, whether a marked paper or a draft against the criteria. If nothing has moved, the diagnosis, the subject or the tutor changes at no additional cost, which is cheaper than extending the arrangement unchanged.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Both windows at one rate

Nobody drives to Al Reef, so a 17:30 slot and a 20:30 slot cost the same and are equally available. In-home delivery from a community this far out forces every family into whichever slot the tutor's route allows, and then prices the journey into the hour.

Matched by subject and level

A tutor is proposed for Higher Level chemistry or Standard Level Analysis and Approaches specifically, because the papers and the content differ between levels. A match made on the subject name is how a family ends up paying for the wrong half of a course.

Planned from the school's own dates

Internal assessment and core work is sequenced from the written internal deadline calendar rather than from the examination window, and deadline collisions across subjects are identified months ahead rather than discovered in the week they land.

Honest about what responds

Internal assessment design and paper technique respond fast to a weekly hour; broad content coverage does not. Content gaps get diagnosed and handed back as a study plan rather than delivered at a pace the student cannot consolidate.

A stated boundary on assessed work

Nothing is drafted, rewritten or edited to submission. Criteria are taught, questions stress-tested, drafts marked against descriptors. One provider in this market sells finished Internal Assessments, and the student carries that risk alone.

A free hour, tonight rather than after a drive

One trial lesson over live video, with no card details taken and no commitment created. If the match or the format is wrong, you have spent an hour instead of a term's fees, and the next match costs nothing either.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Reef: your questions answered

What time can an IB session start for a student travelling home to Al Reef?+

It depends on the route rather than the school. A child at a school in the immediate corridor can usually start by 16:45 or 17:00. Routes out to Khalifa City or Al Raha push that to 17:15 or 17:30. Island and Yas Island routes often mean arrival after 17:15, in which case the dependable window is after 20:00. Measure actual arrival across five days and set the slot thirty minutes after the latest of them, rather than the average, because an optimistic slot gets cancelled.

Is a post-dinner IB session actually productive?+

Yes, if the content matches the hour. A tired Diploma student can review a marked script, work through internal assessment criteria, analyse data they have already collected, or practise timing on a past-paper section. The same student cannot absorb Higher Level calculus for the first time at half past eight. Evening arrangements fail because new content is booked into them, not because the hour is late. For Al Reef households on long routes, a consistent evening slot beats an afternoon one that keeps collapsing.

Which part of the Diploma is worth paying for first?+

Internal assessment design, if one is coming up. A research question that cannot generate the required analysis caps the mark permanently, and one hour spent stress-testing a question is worth more than five spent improving a write-up built on a weak one. After that, paper technique: command terms, showing method, timing and question selection are all trainable within weeks and visible immediately in a marked script. Broad content coverage is the slowest and should be diagnosed and handed back as a study plan.

How heavy is the Diploma compared with IGCSE?+

Heavier than the subject count suggests. Six subjects with three at Higher Level means three courses carrying roughly 240 taught hours each against 150 at Standard, and the extra hours come out of evenings rather than lesson time. On top of that sit Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, none of which appear on the timetable or generate weekly homework, which is exactly why they get postponed. The autumn of Year 13 is the worst period, with internal assessments, the core and mocks converging.

Why do families keep missing internal assessment deadlines?+

Because the deadlines are considered one subject at a time. Listed in date order rather than by subject, the collisions become obvious: two subjects needing data collection in the same fortnight with an Extended Essay draft due in the middle. That is visible months ahead from the school's written internal deadline calendar and invisible without it. Ask your IB coordinator for the calendar at the start of Year 12, work backwards from each date, and then look specifically at where the backwards plans overlap.

How late is too late to choose an Extended Essay question?+

Spring or summer of Year 12, while there is still space to abandon a first idea. The question decides most of the eventual grade: too broad produces description, too narrow produces no material, and both are visible at the outset to anybody who has supervised one. Settling it in Year 13 autumn means the student is committed to whatever they have while several internal assessment deadlines land. The essay is capped at four thousand words, and planning to that limit at outline stage avoids deleting analysis later.

Can a tutor help with Theory of Knowledge from Al Reef?+

Yes, and the sooner the better, but expect a longer wait for the right person. Theory of Knowledge is nobody's degree subject, so almost nobody advertises it and the pool is thin everywhere rather than just locally. The work is criteria coaching and interrogating what the prescribed title is actually asking, which is rarely what it appears to ask. The exhibition commentary, capped at nine hundred and fifty words, most often fails because objects are described rather than connected to a knowledge question.

Do tutors travel out to Al Reef?+

Some independent tutors do, and the market prices the journey into the hour: in-home one-to-one in Abu Dhabi runs AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's 2026 survey, with independents reaching AED 500, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. IB Gram is not among them. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE from us, and visiting tutors are a service offered only in India. Al Reef lessons run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

How many hours a week does a Diploma student here need?+

One reliable hour on one subject suits most students for most of the two years, with density added twice: in the autumn of Year 13 when internal assessments and the core converge, and in the final revision term. Two or three parallel subject arrangements usually produce a tired student and an exhausted budget before the period that actually decides the grades. For an Al Reef household the scheduling constraint makes this easier to accept, since there is rarely room for more than one hour anyway.

My child is moving from MYP into the Diploma. What should we fix?+

Speed and accuracy under time pressure, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. MYP assesses against four criteria graded 1 to 8 and credits the quality of reasoning and investigation more heavily than fast, correct manipulation, so students arrive able to think about unfamiliar problems and slow at routine technique. The Diploma assumes that fluency from the first weeks. The summer before Year 12 is the cheapest time in the whole programme to close it, because nothing competes for the time.

Does Higher Level always mean more tutoring?+

Not necessarily more hours, but different ones. Higher Level carries roughly ninety extra taught hours per subject and usually an additional paper, so the content load is beyond what a weekly hour can deliver. The sensible use of tutoring at Higher Level is diagnosis and technique: identify the two or three content gaps blocking everything else, teach those, then work on the extended-response and multi-part reasoning that the additional paper demands. The rest belongs in the student's own structured study time.

What if an internal assessment is already late?+

The useful work changes from improvement to triage. A tutor can help prioritise which criteria to rescue first, which is a legitimate and genuinely valuable intervention under time pressure. What cannot happen, at any price, is anybody drafting, rewriting or editing the submission. It is submitted as the student's own work with a declaration, schools here run originality checks routinely, and a malpractice finding falls on the candidate rather than on whoever supplied the text. Speak to the school's coordinator as well, because extensions are sometimes possible.

Can one tutor cover two of my child's six subjects?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Mathematics with physics works well, because weak algebra usually surfaces in physics before anybody connects the two. Chemistry with biology works. A science with English or a language rarely works, because the teaching skill is genuinely different. Ask which of the two the tutor has taught most recently to an examination rather than which they are comfortable with, and remember that two Higher Level subjects with one tutor still needs two separate hours.

How quickly can an IB tutor be matched for an Al Reef family?+

Mainstream subjects such as Applications and Interpretation, biology and economics usually match within a few days, because online delivery means availability is not limited to tutors willing to drive out here. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level and Theory of Knowledge can take a week or more, and both tighten sharply around internal assessment season when every Diploma cohort in the corridor needs help at once. You are told which case applies before the trial, along with where the tutor is based.

Is there any point starting support in the final term?+

Yes, provided the aim changes. In the final term, content teaching is largely over and the useful work is timed papers, question selection, command-term discipline and the recovery of marks that are being withheld rather than missed. Take a marked mock, count the marks lost on questions where the answer was broadly right, and that figure is roughly what technique work can recover. It is a smaller ambition than a full course rescue and a far more achievable one in eight or ten weeks.

Measure the bus, get the calendar, book one hour

An IB home tutor in Al Reef is working against a long route and a full Diploma week, and most arrangements fail on those rather than on teaching. Measure actual arrival times for five days, ask your IB coordinator in writing for the internal deadline calendar, and name the subject and the level rather than the subject alone. Then take the free trial hour over live video, with no card details and no commitment, worked on a real script or draft. Review it honestly after four sessions.
