IB Maths Tutor in Al Reef

An IB maths tutor in Al Reef gets one hour a week and no more, because the bus is long and a Diploma week is already full. What that hour contains decides everything. IB Gram sends nobody to Abu Dhabi addresses: lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. This page sets out which mathematics tasks fit a single hour, which belong in fifteen-minute daily drills the student runs alone, and how to tell the two apart.

  • A written split between what the paid hour does and what daily drills do
  • Matched to the course and level: AA or AI, Higher or Standard
  • Exploration work broken into tasks that fit a crowded week
  • One free trial hour over live video, with no card details requested

IB & IGCSE in Al Reef

What one weekly hour of IB mathematics can and cannot do

Al Reef households arrive at the same constraint as almost everybody out this way. The bus is long, the Diploma week already holds six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, and when the sums are done there is one reliable hour a week available for mathematics. Occasionally two. The useful planning question is therefore not how much tutoring to buy but what belongs inside that hour and what belongs outside it.

The distinction is real and it is the single most useful idea on this page. Some mathematics improves through explanation: a concept that has not landed, a technique nobody has demonstrated, a question type the student does not recognise. That work needs a teacher and fits an hour. Other mathematics improves only through repetition: algebraic fluency, mental estimation, exact-value arithmetic, recall of identities. That work needs fifteen minutes a day and gains almost nothing from a weekly lesson, because a week is long enough for the gain to decay before the next session.

Families who do not separate the two spend the scarce hour on the wrong half. A tutor runs algebra practice for sixty minutes, which is pleasant and produces a measurable improvement that has vanished by the following Tuesday, while the concept that was actually blocking progress goes untouched for another week. The correct arrangement is the reverse: the hour explains and diagnoses, the student drills daily, and the tutor checks the error pattern in the drills rather than running them.

The second thing worth settling early is which of the four Diploma mathematics courses your child is on. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation each run at Higher and Standard Level, and they diverge in content, in calculator access and in paper structure. Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level sits Paper 1 without a calculator, which makes exact-value fluency a genuine examination requirement rather than good practice. Every Applications and Interpretation paper permits the calculator, which moves the work elsewhere entirely.

What follows is a method for spending one hour well. It sorts mathematics tasks into those that fit an hour and those that do not, sets out a fifteen-minute daily drill plan, explains how to read a marked Diploma script, breaks the exploration into tasks small enough for a full week, and lays out what to do in the eight weeks after a mock result. IB Gram provides no home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tutors are a service offered only in India, and every session described here reaches a desk over live video. Nothing in the method below depends on hiring anybody either: a family that separates the hour from the drill and reads the marked script has already done the part most arrangements get wrong.

At a glance

  • The paid hour explains and diagnoses; daily drills build fluency
  • Fifteen minutes a day beats sixty minutes a week for algebraic fluency
  • AA Standard Level Paper 1 is sat without a calculator; every AI paper permits one
  • The exploration is 20% of the grade and can be broken into short tasks
  • Higher Level adds Paper 3, which needs a longer slot than an hour
  • School internal deadlines govern the year; ask the coordinator for them in writing
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programmes matter here: the Diploma, the Middle Years Programme that precedes it at the continuum schools in this corridor, and the IGCSE route most students arrive from. Each produces a different relationship between the weekly hour and the daily drill.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme mathematics

One course from four, covering number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus to different depths. Higher Level carries roughly 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard and adds a third paper. The exploration is common to all four courses at twenty per cent of the final grade, marked out of twenty against five criteria.

The document that governs an Al Reef Diploma student's year is the school's written internal deadline calendar, not anything the board publishes. Ask the IB coordinator for it at the start of Year 12. No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated verification and an unverified date acted on by a family is worse than none.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme mathematics

Criterion-referenced, graded 1 to 8 against four criteria, with extended and standard streams in the upper years. Students arrive in the Diploma strong on investigation and reasoning and slow at routine manipulation, because the programme credits the quality of mathematical thinking more than speed and accuracy under pressure.

For an Al Reef student this profile makes the daily drill more important than the weekly hour in the first Diploma term, because what is missing is fluency rather than understanding. Fifteen minutes a day of indices, surds and rearrangement closes more of that gap in a month than four tutoring sessions would.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and International GCSE mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Extended or Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Higher in this corridor, with Additional Mathematics 0606 available in some schools. Students arrive with secure procedure and no experience of open-ended mathematical writing, which makes the exploration the unfamiliar part rather than the content.

Students who completed 0606 arrive with most of the Analysis and Approaches entry gap closed and generally need the hour for exploration work rather than for content. Students who sat Core tier and want Analysis and Approaches need an honest conversation in Year 11, because Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is usually the realistic route.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics tasks sorted by what they need rather than by topic heading, because that sorting is what makes a single weekly hour productive.

Concept explanation

All four courses

A topic that has not landed despite class teaching: implicit differentiation, hypothesis testing, vector geometry. This is what an hour is for, because it needs somebody to demonstrate and then watch the student attempt it. Nothing else returns as much per paid minute.

Question-type recognition

All four courses

Learning to see what a question is asking for before starting. Students who can do every technique still lose marks because they do not recognise which one a question invites. Taught in an hour, reinforced by drills afterwards.

Algebraic fluency

All four courses

Indices, surds, rearrangement, algebraic fractions. Essential and badly suited to a weekly lesson: it needs fifteen minutes a day. The tutor's role is to check the error pattern rather than to run the practice.

Exact-value arithmetic

AA, where Paper 1 is calculator-free

Surds, fractions and trigonometric exact values handled quickly and accurately. A genuine examination requirement for Analysis and Approaches candidates, and purely a repetition task, so it belongs entirely in daily drills.

Calculator discipline

All AI papers; AA Papers 2 and 3

Writing the equation before the screen value, storing rather than retyping, rounding once at the end, checking angle mode. A short taught habit with a large and immediate effect on marks that are currently being withheld rather than missed.

The exploration

All four courses

Twenty per cent of the grade, marked out of twenty across criteria A to E, with only six marks for the mathematics being right. Decomposable into short tasks, which is why it suits a crowded Al Reef week better than families expect.

Paper 3 investigation

HL only

Two long structured problems in one hour at Higher Level. The one task that genuinely does not fit a sixty-minute slot, because a single investigation takes longer than that to attempt and review, so it needs a double session.

Timing and question selection

All four courses

Deciding in the first few seconds whether to start a question and when to abandon one. Trainable, under-taught, and the thing that most often separates two students with identical knowledge. Practised in the hour, rehearsed in timed drills.

Command terms and notation

All four courses

The difference between show that, find, justify and hence, and the notation an examiner expects. A reading skill rather than a mathematical one, and one that responds to two or three focused sessions and then stays fixed.

Statistics and the GDC together

AI especially

Regression, distributions and hypothesis testing where the calculator produces the output and the marks depend on justifying it. Half concept and half discipline, so it needs both the hour and the drill.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by what the week holds rather than by preference. All run over live video, with nobody travelling to a UAE address.

One explanatory hour a week

The default for an Al Reef household: sixty minutes spent on concepts, question-type recognition and diagnosis, with fluency work handed back as daily drills. The tutor reviews the week's drill errors in the first few minutes and then teaches, which is a different use of the hour from running practice inside it.

  • Opens with the drill error pattern, not with a warm-up exercise
  • Teaches the concept blocking progress rather than covering the syllabus
  • Ends with the next week's drill set, written down
  • Written note after each session naming the concept and the target

Double session for Paper 3

Higher Level candidates need a longer slot for Paper 3, because one structured investigation takes more than an hour to attempt and review properly. Scheduled as a weekend or late-evening double rather than squeezed into a weekday hour, and booked as a short block rather than a standing arrangement.

  • Two hours, so a full investigation can be attempted then reviewed
  • Past investigations rather than general revision material
  • Focus on recovering from an early error rather than avoiding one
  • Four to six sessions, usually in the term before the session

Exploration task block

The exploration broken into tasks that fit a crowded week: topic stress-test, data check, one analysis technique, one criterion at a time. Scheduled from the school's internal draft dates rather than from the examination, so the work lands when the school expects it rather than when the family notices.

  • Topic tested against criterion E before any work begins
  • Each session closes one criterion rather than touching all five
  • Drafts marked against descriptors with nothing rewritten
  • Sequenced from the school's written internal deadline calendar

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Reef

01

Sorting tasks: what fits an hour and what does not

This is the decision that makes a single weekly hour worth paying for. Mathematics tasks divide into those that need a teacher present and those that need repetition, and the division is sharp enough to write down. Tasks needing a teacher involve something the student cannot currently do and could not reach alone: a concept that has not landed, a technique nobody has demonstrated, a question type they do not recognise, a method whose weakness they cannot see. Those fit an hour exactly.

Tasks needing repetition involve something the student can already do, just not fast or reliably enough. Algebraic rearrangement. Surd and fraction arithmetic. Recall of trigonometric identities. Mental estimation. Spotting a sign error. Every one of those improves with fifteen minutes a day and barely at all with sixty minutes a week, because the gain depends on frequency rather than duration and a seven-day gap undoes most of it before the next session.

Put the wrong task in the hour and the whole arrangement underperforms without obviously failing, which is why it persists. A session spent on algebra drill feels productive, produces visible improvement inside the hour, and leaves the concept that was actually blocking progress untouched for another week. The fix is to agree the split in writing at the start: the hour explains and diagnoses, the student drills daily, and the tutor opens each session by reading the drill errors rather than by setting more of them.

02

A fifteen-minute daily drill that actually gets done

A drill plan only works if it is short enough to survive a bad day, specific enough to need no decisions, and checkable without a parent becoming a teacher. Fifteen minutes is the right length because it fits after dinner on an evening when the bus was late, and because a student who is asked for thirty will do nothing on four days out of five. The content should be fixed for a fortnight at a time so there is nothing to choose each evening.

The structure that holds is five minutes of pure arithmetic or algebra at speed, five minutes on one targeted weakness, and five minutes of a single past-paper question attempted under a timer. The first block builds fluency. The second closes the specific gap the tutor identified. The third keeps timing in the student's habits rather than appearing as a panic in the final term. Written on a card or a shared note, with the week's content listed, it needs no planning from anybody.

The tutor's job is not to run the drill but to read it. Collect the week's work, look at where the errors cluster, and change next fortnight's second block accordingly. That takes a few minutes at the start of the session and converts the drill from homework into diagnosis. For an Al Reef student with one hour a week, this is how five hours of practice a fortnight appear without buying five hours of tutoring, and it is the difference between a plan that moves a grade and one that merely occupies an evening.

Bad-day version5Speed block onlyProtects the habit when the bus runs late
03

Reading a marked Diploma mathematics script

  • Right answer, marks withheld: method not visible on a calculator paper
  • Blanks clustered at the end: timing, not knowledge
  • Scattered arithmetic slips: fluency, which belongs in the daily drill
  • Correct value in the wrong form: a reading loss, quick to fix
  • Ask a prospective tutor to classify every loss on the script before you hire

A marked paper is the most informative document an Al Reef family holds, and it is usually filed rather than read. It does not just show a mark; it shows how the mark was lost, and the pattern identifies which of several unrelated problems you are dealing with. Fifteen minutes with the script before any hours are bought is the highest-return effort available, and it also tells you quickly whether a prospective tutor is reading it or glancing at it.

Three signatures are worth looking for specifically. Questions where the final answer is correct but marks were still withheld point to invisible method, which on a calculator paper is usually a student writing a screen value without the equation that produced it. Questions blank or abandoned halfway, particularly clustered towards the end, point to timing rather than content. Questions attempted correctly with arithmetic errors scattered through them point to fluency, which is the drill problem rather than a teaching problem.

A fourth and subtler signature is the question answered correctly in the wrong form: an exact value given as a decimal, an answer to three significant figures where the question wanted two, a final line that does not state what was asked for. Those are reading losses and they are cheap to fix. A tutor who can walk through a script and classify every loss into those four categories within a few minutes is reading the paper properly, and that is a reasonable thing to require before the first paid session.

04

The exploration, in tasks small enough for a full week

The exploration is worth twenty per cent of the mathematics grade in all four courses and is routinely postponed, because it looks like a project and an Al Reef Diploma student has no room for a project. Broken into tasks it is not a project. It is a sequence of short decisions and short pieces of work, most of which fit inside a thirty-minute evening or inside the weekly hour alongside something else.

The sequence begins with the only task that cannot be rushed: testing whether the topic can generate mathematics at the course level. That is one conversation, and getting it wrong caps criterion E permanently regardless of how good the writing becomes. After that come securing data or a mathematical context, performing one analysis technique at a time, drafting one section at a time, and addressing one criterion at a time. Each of those is a discrete task with a visible finish, which is what makes them survivable in a crowded term.

Criteria A to E carry four, four, three, three and six marks respectively, and only criterion E is about the mathematics being correct. That means fourteen of the twenty marks reward how the piece is organised, communicated, owned and interrogated, which is work that can be done in short bursts. A tutor's legitimate contribution is teaching what each criterion credits, questioning method until the student finds its weakness, and marking drafts against the descriptors. No part of the exploration may be written, drafted or edited to submission by anybody but the student, at any price.

05

The eight weeks after a mock result

Mock results are the one moment in the Diploma when a family has precise information and a defined window to act on it. Eight weeks is roughly what exists between a mock and the next assessment point, and it is enough to move specific marks if the plan is built from the script rather than from anxiety. It is not enough to re-teach a course, and attempts to do that are why some families finish the period having covered everything and improved nothing.

The first fortnight belongs to the largest recoverable cluster from the script, which is usually either a single concept blocking several question types or the invisible-method habit on calculator papers. The second fortnight adds a full timed paper between sessions, marked against the scheme, so the pattern of losses can be compared with the original mock. By week five the comparison either shows movement in the targeted area or it does not, and that is the point to change the plan rather than extend it.

The last three weeks shift entirely to timing, question selection and finishing. Full papers under proper conditions, with the student practising the first-few-seconds decision about whether to start a question and the discipline of returning to an abandoned one. Nothing new is introduced after week six, because a topic met for the first time in the final fortnight is a liability rather than an asset. For an Al Reef household the whole block should be scheduled around the bus from the outset, because a plan that depends on three punctual weeks will not survive.

Which course, and why it changes the drill

  • AA at either level: exact values, surds and fractions need daily practice
  • AI at either level: statistical output reading and written justification
  • AI Higher Level matrices and graph theory belong in the taught hour
  • AA Higher Level calculus and proof need demonstration before drilling
  • Ask any tutor to specify the drill for your course and level, and to justify it

The four Diploma mathematics courses do not simply differ in difficulty; they differ in what deserves daily practice. For Analysis and Approaches at either level, Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which makes exact-value arithmetic, surd handling and fraction fluency genuine examination requirements. A student on that course who drills nothing daily will meet Paper 1 able to do every technique slowly, and slowness in a calculator-free paper is indistinguishable from not knowing.

For Applications and Interpretation, every paper permits the calculator, so the daily work moves to a different place: reading statistical output critically, recognising which model a context invites, and the discipline of justifying a screen value in writing. Higher Level adds matrices and graph theory, which are concept-heavy and belong in the paid hour rather than in drills, because they need demonstration before practice means anything.

The practical consequence is that a drill plan copied from another student is usually wrong. Ask any tutor to specify the daily drill for your child's specific course and level, and to say why that content rather than something else. Somebody teaching the course answers immediately and differently for Analysis and Approaches than for Applications and Interpretation. Somebody working from a general idea of Diploma mathematics will produce the same algebra sheet either way, which is the clearest available signal that the plan has not been built for your child. The same test works on an existing arrangement: ask what the drill is for and why, and listen for whether the answer names the course.

07

Honesty, permits and the two questions worth asking

  • Ask what the provider will refuse to do on an exploration
  • Ask whether the tutor holds a current MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • The permit is free, runs two years, and belongs to the individual
  • ADEK ethics rules bar tutoring students enrolled at the tutor's own school
  • No tutoring provider holds regulator approval, and none should claim it

Two short matters, both worth settling before money changes hands. The first is the exploration boundary. No tutor may write, draft, rewrite or edit to submission any part of an exploration, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay or any assessed coursework, at any price and under any deadline. It is submitted as the student's own work with a declaration, schools in this corridor run originality checks as routine, and a malpractice finding falls on the candidate rather than on whoever supplied the text. At least one provider in UAE search results sells completed Internal Assessments.

The second is the permit. Private tutoring in the UAE operates under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged fifteen to eighteen. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published so no figure appears here.

There is a related Abu Dhabi rule. ADEK's professional-ethics requirements for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document, so verify it against the current ADEK text. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from ADEK, KHDA, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and any provider claiming otherwise is making a claim worth testing.

08

Testing a match in one free hour

  • Send course, level, school, marked script and any exploration draft first
  • Watch whether the tutor works from your material
  • Ask them to classify every loss on the script
  • Ask for a drill plan specific to the course and level, with a reason
  • Ask your child afterwards whether the explanation landed

Before any payment, one free hour over live video with no card details and no commitment. What makes it useful is deciding in advance what is being tested, because an unstructured trial becomes an introduction and leaves you deciding on exactly the impressions you were trying to get past.

Send the course and level, the school, a marked script and, if there is an exploration under way, its current state. Then watch three things in the hour. Does the tutor work from that material rather than from a generic topic? Can they classify every loss on the script into method, timing, fluency or reading? And do they specify a daily drill for your child's course and level, with a reason for that content rather than another?

Afterwards ask your child a single question: did you follow it? That is the judgement nobody else can make and the one that predicts whether the arrangement will work, because a student who will not interrupt to ask something is paying for a monologue. Then ask the provider the two closing questions: what happens if the match is wrong, and what will you refuse to do. Three providers tested the same way inside a week gives a real comparison, which is quicker and cheaper than arranging for anybody to drive to Al Reef. Keep the written answers as well, because a provider who is precise before any money changes hands tends to stay precise afterwards, and one who is vague has shown you how month three will feel.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Reef

Nearby communities, described by what they add to a Diploma mathematics search rather than by their amenities.

Al Reef villages

A thin local tutor pool, because households here travel out for school and work. Diploma mathematics at Higher Level is effectively unavailable in person on a weekday evening.

Al Reef Downtown

Apartment households with later evenings, where the dependable arrangement is a post-20:00 slot used for explanation rather than for drilling.

Khalifa City

The nearest concentration of Diploma provision and of tutors, whose own community absorbs them before an Al Reef family reaches the front of the queue.

Al Raha Gardens

Short school runs and an established cohort, which means the afternoon slots there are taken and the evening ones are shared with Al Reef.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Large and curriculum-mixed, so it adds general mathematics tutors without adding Analysis and Approaches depth at Higher Level.

Al Bateen and the Corniche

Where many experienced Diploma tutors live. Reaching them in person from Al Reef means paying for a long journey in both directions.

Yas Island and Saadiyat Island

Established Diploma teaching at the emirate's highest rates, and the furthest practical distance for any in-person arrangement from here.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Where most Al Reef Diploma students study. Two children from the same village can be sitting Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level and Applications and Interpretation at Standard, which is why matching on the course rather than the area is the whole of the hiring decision.

Island and Saadiyat Diploma schools

Longer journeys and the emirate's deepest concentration of Diploma mathematics teaching. Students travelling this far have the least room in the week, which makes the hour-versus-drill split more important rather than less.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Name the course and level

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or Applications and Interpretation at Standard, plus the school. It decides which tutors are candidates and, just as importantly, what the daily drill should contain, because the four courses need different daily practice.

  2. 02

    Send the marked script

With the annotations intact. Ask the tutor to classify every lost mark as method, timing, fluency or reading. Those four have different remedies at different costs, and a conversation about how maths is going cannot distinguish between them.

  3. 03

Agree the hour-and-drill split in writing

What the paid hour will do and what the student will drill daily, with the drill content fixed for a fortnight. This is the step that makes one weekly hour productive, and it is the step almost every arrangement skips.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial hour

One hour over live video, no card details and no commitment, worked on your child's own material. Then ask your child whether they followed it, which is the only judgement that predicts whether the arrangement will hold.

  5. 05

Review at four sessions against the drill

Check whether the targeted weakness has moved in the drill record and in unseen questions. If it has not, the diagnosis, the drill content or the tutor changes at no additional cost, rather than the arrangement being extended unchanged.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The hour is spent on what needs a teacher

Concepts, question recognition and diagnosis go in the paid hour; fluency goes into fifteen-minute daily drills. Reversing that split is the most common way a single weekly hour is wasted, and it is invisible because the session still feels productive.

A drill plan specific to the course

Analysis and Approaches candidates drill exact values and surds because Paper 1 has no calculator. Applications and Interpretation candidates drill statistical output reading and written justification. A single algebra sheet for both is a plan nobody built.

Paper 3 given a longer slot

One structured investigation takes more than an hour to attempt and review, so Higher Level Paper 3 work is scheduled as a double session rather than squeezed into a weekday hour where it cannot be finished.

The exploration broken into tasks

Twenty per cent of the grade, decomposed into topic stress-test, data check, one technique, one criterion at a time. That is what makes it survivable in a week with a long bus route and no spare weekends.

A boundary stated before you ask

Nothing in an exploration is drafted, rewritten or edited to submission. Criteria are taught, topics tested, methods questioned, drafts marked against descriptors, and the submission stays demonstrably the student's own work.

Both windows at one rate

Nobody drives to Al Reef, so a late-afternoon slot and a post-20:00 slot cost the same and are equally available, and a session can move to the next evening without anybody rebuilding a route across the emirate.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Reef: your questions answered

Is one hour a week enough for IB maths?+

Enough, if the hour is spent on what needs a teacher and the student drills daily. The hour should go on concepts that have not landed, recognising what questions ask for, and diagnosis from a marked script. Fluency work, meaning algebraic rearrangement, surds, exact values and mental estimation, improves with fifteen minutes a day and barely at all with sixty minutes a week, because the gain depends on frequency. Families who spend the hour on fluency get a session that feels productive and leaves the real blockage untouched for another week.

What should a daily maths drill actually contain?+

Fifteen minutes, in three blocks, with the content fixed for a fortnight so there is nothing to decide each evening. Five minutes of speed arithmetic and algebra. Five minutes on one weakness the tutor has set. Five minutes on a single past-paper question against a timer. On a bad evening, do the speed block alone rather than nothing, which protects the habit. The tutor's role is to read the week's errors at the start of each session and reset the second block fortnightly, which turns the drill into diagnosis.

Where do the withheld marks go on a Diploma calculator paper?+

Because the method is not visible. On a calculator paper a student solves something on screen and writes the result, which collects the answer mark and forfeits the method marks, often the larger share on a multi-part question. Writing the equation or integral being evaluated before producing the value takes a few seconds and recovers them. The other common causes are rounding at an intermediate step, retyping a previous result rather than storing it, and giving an answer in the wrong form or to the wrong accuracy.

Does Analysis and Approaches really need calculator-free practice?+

Yes, because Paper 1 is sat without a calculator at both levels of that course. Exact-value arithmetic, surd handling and fraction fluency stop being good habits and become examination requirements. A student who can perform every technique slowly will meet Paper 1 unable to finish, and in a calculator-free paper slowness is indistinguishable from not knowing. That work belongs in the daily drill rather than the weekly hour, because it is repetition rather than explanation and it decays within a week without contact.

How do we fit the maths exploration into a full week?+

By refusing to treat it as a project. Broken into tasks it is a sequence of short decisions: test whether the topic can generate mathematics at the course level, secure the data or context, perform one analysis technique, draft one section, address one criterion. Most of those fit a thirty-minute evening. The only task that cannot be rushed is the topic test, because a topic that cannot reach the course level caps criterion E permanently and no later work recovers it.

Can a tutor work on the exploration without crossing a line?+

Yes, within clear limits that any provider should state before you ask. A tutor may teach what each criterion credits and how many marks it carries, stress-test a topic before weeks go into it, question a method until the student finds the weakness, model a technique on entirely different data, mark drafts against the descriptors and check referencing. A tutor may not write, draft, rewrite or edit any part of the submission at any price. One provider in UAE search results sells completed Internal Assessments, and the student carries all of that risk.

What is the best use of the eight weeks after a mock?+

Target the largest recoverable cluster from the script in the first fortnight, add a full timed paper in the second, then re-diagnose in week five rather than simply continuing. The last three weeks go on timing, question selection and finishing, with nothing new introduced after week six because a topic met in the final fortnight is a liability. Eight weeks will move specific marks if the plan comes from the script; it will not re-teach a course, and attempting that is how families cover everything and improve nothing.

Does Paper 3 fit into a normal weekly hour?+

No, and that is the one task on this page where the hour is genuinely the wrong container. A Higher Level Paper 3 investigation takes longer than sixty minutes to attempt and then review properly, so squeezing it in means either an incomplete attempt or no review. Schedule it as a two-hour weekend or late-evening double, as a short block of four to six sessions in the term before the session, and work on recovering from an early error rather than only on avoiding one.

My child is slow rather than confused. What does that need?+

Daily repetition, not more teaching. Slowness in routine manipulation is a fluency problem, and fluency responds to fifteen minutes a day and almost nothing to a weekly lesson. A tutor's useful contribution is to identify precisely which operations are slow, set a fortnight of targeted drill, and read the error pattern each week. Buying extra tutoring hours for a fluency problem is the most expensive way to solve it, and it is what happens when nobody separates the two kinds of difficulty.

Can we find a Higher Level maths tutor who will come to Al Reef?+

In practice, rarely, and the reason is arithmetic rather than reputation. A tutor driving out past the airport road on a weekday evening commits most of that evening to one paid hour, so the few who will do it are selected by willingness to travel rather than by syllabus knowledge. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the thinnest Diploma course to staff anywhere in the emirate. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all; lessons run over live video, matched on the course taught.

How do we know which of the four maths courses my child takes?+

Ask the school and get it in writing: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard Level. It changes the content depth, the calculator rules, whether a third paper is sat, and what the daily drill should contain. A tutor who produces the same drill sheet regardless of the answer has not built a plan for your child. Somebody teaching the course specifies different daily practice for Analysis and Approaches than for Applications and Interpretation, and can say why.

Should a parent supervise the daily drill?+

Collect it, do not teach it. The plan works because it needs no decisions and no explanation: fixed content for a fortnight, three five-minute blocks, written on a card or a shared note. A parent's role is to make sure the week's work reaches the session, which is what converts practice into diagnosis. Trying to mark it or explain it usually ends in an argument and in a parent teaching a method that differs from the school's, which creates a problem rather than solving one.

What if the weekly slot keeps getting cancelled?+

Move it after the second cancellation rather than defending it. Al Reef routes are long and variable, and a slot chosen for a good week collapses in a normal one. Because nobody is travelling to the house, a weekly time can shift to a later evening or another day in a single message, and the tutor loses nothing. The arrangements that fail are the ones where a family keeps a broken slot out of politeness, misses three sessions and then stops without saying why.

Is it worth starting in the final term of Year 13?+

Yes, with a changed aim. By then content teaching is largely over and the recoverable marks are the ones being withheld rather than missed: invisible method on calculator papers, answers in the wrong form, abandoned questions that were nearly finished. Take a marked mock, count the marks lost on questions where the answer was broadly right, and that figure is roughly what technique work can recover in eight or ten weeks. It is a smaller ambition than a course rescue and a far more achievable one.

How quickly can a match be arranged from Al Reef?+

Applications and Interpretation at either level and Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level usually match within a few days, because online delivery means the pool is not limited to tutors willing to drive out here. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level can take a week or more, and it tightens around school internal deadlines when every Diploma cohort in the corridor needs the same help. You are told which applies before the trial, along with where the tutor is based and the time zone the session is set to.

Split the hour from the drill, then start

An IB maths tutor in Al Reef has one hour a week to work with, and the arrangement succeeds or fails on what goes into it. Put concepts, question recognition and diagnosis in the paid hour. Put fluency into fifteen minutes a day, with content fixed for a fortnight. Send the marked script and ask any tutor to classify every lost mark and specify a drill for your child's exact course and level. Then take the free trial hour over live video, with no card details, and ask your child whether they followed it.
