IB Maths Tutor in Hudayriyat Island

The question behind every search for an IB maths tutor in Hudayriyat Island is whether anybody within reach genuinely teaches the course your child is sitting. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Applications and Interpretation Higher Level are separate syllabuses with separate papers, and a tutor who knows one well may not know the other at all. This page answers the availability question honestly, names what to verify, and explains why one-to-one lessons over live video solve a problem that distance created.

  • Tutors named by the course they teach: AA or AI, Higher or Standard
  • Paper 3 and the exploration treated as separate pieces of work
  • Exploration criteria A to E explained; the student writes every word

IB & IGCSE in Hudayriyat Island

The honest answer to "is there anyone near me who knows this syllabus?"

Probably not, if near means within a short drive of Hudayriyat Island, and the course is Higher Level. This is the answer most tutoring pages will not give, so it is worth setting out the reasoning rather than just the conclusion. There are four separate IB mathematics courses, and the one a student is sitting determines which teacher is useful to them. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, which is the course that most often triggers this search, is taught by a comparatively small number of teachers in Abu Dhabi, almost all of them employed full time at an IB World School.

Hudayriyat Island compounds that. The island is reached by bridge from Al Bateen, residential handovers here are recent, and the school-age population arrived after the housing. There is no settled local teaching community on the island to draw from. So the pool of people who both teach AA HL and live close enough to Hudayriyat to come twice a week is, realistically, extremely thin, and in some subject-and-time combinations it is empty. A family that keeps searching for a nearby specialist is searching for something the geography does not contain.

The second reason the local search fails is structural. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff restrict teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation private tuition work permit carries a comparable bar on serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. The IB maths teachers physically nearest your child are frequently the ones who cannot lawfully be hired. The nearby pool is smaller than it looks even before the drive is considered.

What follows from this is not a sales argument but an arithmetic one. If the specialist pool for a specific course is small and scattered across the emirate, then the only way to reach a genuine AA HL or AI HL teacher is to stop filtering by distance. One-to-one lessons over live video do exactly that. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE — home visits are an India-only service — and on this particular search that limitation turns out to be the point rather than a compromise.

A word on what to expect from the market while you compare. Published UAE rates for a qualified subject tutor working online sit roughly between AED 150 and 300 an hour, with specialist IB and A-Level rates quoted from AED 200 to 450 and upward, and one premium examiner-led provider at AED 650. In-home arrangements are quoted from AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the rate. Those are figures read from other providers' published pages in October 2026. The relevant observation for this page is that the premium attached to specialist IB maths is not a travel premium; it is a scarcity premium, and travelling further does not reduce it.

The rest of this page is written to let you test a tutor rather than trust one. It sets out the difference between AA and AI, the papers and their weightings at both levels, where Higher Level students reliably lose marks, what the exploration is assessed on criterion by criterion, and the questions that separate a genuine IB maths teacher from a competent general mathematician in about ten minutes of conversation.

At a glance

  • Four courses, not one: AA SL, AA HL, AI SL and AI HL are separately examined
  • Higher Level adds a third paper worth 20% of the grade; Standard Level has two papers
  • The exploration carries 20% of the final mark and is assessed on criteria A to E
  • ADEK ethics rules and the MoHRE permit restrict a teacher tutoring their own school's students
  • IB session dates are not published on this page; confirm them with your school's IB coordinator
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video; IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An IB maths tutor is only useful if they know which point of the continuum the student is at. The four Diploma maths courses sit on top of several years of earlier IB mathematics, and most Higher Level problems that surface in Year 12 were planted in the Middle Years Programme.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Diploma Programme mathematics

Every Diploma candidate takes one of four courses: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at Standard or Higher Level. Standard Level is examined through two papers plus the exploration; Higher Level adds a third, shorter paper of extended problem-solving. The five topic areas are common to all four courses — number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus — but the depth and the balance differ sharply.

Abu Dhabi IB schools sit the May session, which is the northern-hemisphere series. A November session also exists and is used by some candidates and schools. No IB session or results date appears anywhere on this page: ibo.org blocks automated checking, so nothing could be verified, and a date a family plans around has to come from the school's IB coordinator or ibo.org directly.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

Middle Years Programme mathematics

The five-year programme that feeds the Diploma, assessed against four criteria rather than by external paper. MYP mathematics rewards investigation and communication alongside technique, which is a genuine strength and also the reason some students arrive in Year 12 with weaker algebraic fluency than an IGCSE cohort. Extended mathematics in MYP years 4 and 5 is the honest preparation for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level.

For a Hudayriyat Island family, the MYP years are the cheapest place to intervene. A student whose algebraic manipulation is shaky at the end of MYP 5 will meet that gap again in the first term of AA HL, under far more time pressure and at specialist tutoring rates rather than general ones.

PYPAges 3–12 · FS to Year 6

Primary Years Programme mathematics

Inquiry-led primary mathematics organised around number, pattern and function, measurement, shape and space, and data handling. There is no external examination. The transferable habit the programme builds — explaining a method rather than producing an answer — maps directly onto the communication criterion in the Diploma exploration years later.

Abu Dhabi has a reasonable spread of PYP provision across the island and the Khalifa City corridor, so families moving to Hudayriyat usually have continuity options. Tuition at this stage is best spent on number fluency rather than on acceleration, because acceleration without fluency is what produces the Year 12 problems described further down this page.

CPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Career-related Programme

The fourth IB programme, combining Diploma courses with a career-related study and a core of personal and professional skills. Mathematics appears where a student takes a DP maths course as part of the combination, most often Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, which suits the applied and data-handling emphasis of the programme.

CP provision in the UAE is much narrower than DP provision, so a family considering it should confirm directly with the school rather than assuming availability. Where a CP student is taking AI SL, the tutoring need is usually the technology component and the statistics topics rather than algebra.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An IB maths tutor for a Hudayriyat Island student is usually working on one of the areas below. They are listed by where the marks go missing rather than by syllabus order, because that is how a diagnostic session actually proceeds.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra-and-calculus route, built for students heading towards mathematics, physics, engineering or economics at university. Higher Level is the most demanding of the four courses. Marks are lost on unstructured algebraic manipulation, on proof technique, and on the non-calculator paper where fluency rather than understanding is the binding constraint.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling-and-data route, with the graphic display calculator assumed throughout both papers. Less algebraically demanding than AA and more demanding in interpretation: students lose marks by producing a correct statistical output and then failing to say what it means in the context of the question.

AA Higher Level: proof and complex numbers

HL only

Proof by induction, contradiction and counterexample, plus complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form with De Moivre's theorem. This content appears nowhere in Standard Level and nowhere in MYP, so it is new in every respect. It is the single most common reason an able AA HL student's grade stalls in the first year.

AA Higher Level: calculus extensions

HL only

Implicit differentiation, related rates, L'Hôpital's rule, Maclaurin series, improper integrals and first-order differential equations through separation of variables and the integrating factor. Paper 3 draws heavily here. Students who can execute each technique in isolation still lose marks when a question requires them to choose between three of them.

AI Higher Level: matrices and graph theory

HL only

Matrix algebra, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, transition matrices, and graph theory including adjacency matrices, minimum spanning trees and the Chinese postman and travelling salesman problems. Entirely absent from AA, which is why an AA-trained tutor is of limited use to an AI HL student.

AI: statistics and hypothesis testing

HL and SL

Regression, correlation, the chi-squared test for independence and goodness of fit, and at Higher Level the t-test, Poisson and binomial distributions and confidence intervals. The marks sit in stating hypotheses precisely, reading the p-value against the significance level, and writing a conclusion in context rather than in statistics vocabulary.

Functions and transformations

HL and SL, both courses

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, rational functions, and the transformation sequences that appear in every paper. A student who cannot sketch a transformed function without a calculator will lose marks across the whole paper, not just on the function question, because sketches are how the harder questions are set up.

Geometry, trigonometry and vectors

HL and SL · vectors AA HL

Trigonometric identities and equations at both levels, with three-dimensional vectors, lines and planes added at AA Higher Level. Vector geometry is where spatial reasoning and algebra have to work together, and it is the topic students most often decide to skip in revision, which is a mistake because it recurs in Paper 3.

The mathematical exploration (internal assessment)

All four courses

A piece of independent mathematical writing worth 20% of the final grade, assessed on five criteria totalling 20 marks: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. The mathematics is only six of those twenty marks, which surprises most students and explains most low scores.

Calculator technique and the non-calculator paper

HL and SL

AA papers include a paper without technology; AI assumes the graphic display calculator throughout. Both demand specific discipline — the AA student needs arithmetic and surd fluency, the AI student needs to know which calculator function produces which output and how to present it. Neither skill is taught explicitly in most classrooms.

Paper 3 extended problem-solving

HL only, both courses

A shorter paper of two extended questions that build in stages, worth 20% of the Higher Level grade. It rewards reading ahead, recognising the structure of the problem, and persisting through an early part that is not yet obviously going anywhere. Practice on individual topics does not prepare a student for it.

Transition work: MYP or IGCSE into DP maths

Pre-DP

The two most common gaps are algebraic fluency coming out of MYP and function language coming out of IGCSE. Both are closeable in a few weeks before Year 12 begins and expensive to close in the middle of it. For Hudayriyat Island families moving school or country, this is the highest-return tutoring block available.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of work cover almost every IB maths need in this part of Abu Dhabi, plus a dedicated exploration clinic that exists because the exploration is a different task from the papers and conflating them wastes sessions.

Weekly one-to-one on the course the student is sitting

A fixed slot through Year 12 and Year 13, planned against the school's own scheme of work and matched to the exact course — AA HL, AA SL, AI HL or AI SL. Work is set and marked between sessions, because contact hours without marked practice move a maths grade very little. The tutor keeps a running record of which topics are secure and which are not.

  • Matched to the course code, not to a general maths label
  • Planned from the school's scheme of work and internal assessment dates
  • Marked problem sets between sessions, returned with comments
  • A visible list of secure and insecure topics, updated each month

Paper 3 and extended problem-solving block

A Higher Level specific block aimed at the third paper, which carries 20% of the grade and rewards a skill the other two papers do not test. Sessions work through full extended questions in staged form, with the tutor modelling how to read ahead, how to recognise which technique the structure is pointing to, and how to keep going through an unproductive opening part.

  • Full extended questions rather than topic exercises
  • Explicit work on reading the structure of a staged problem
  • Timed practice under the real paper duration
  • Available for both AA HL and AI HL, taught differently in each

Exploration feedback clinic

Short, focused sessions on the internal assessment, organised around the five criteria rather than around the mathematics alone. The tutor explains what each criterion rewards in the IB's own language, questions whether the chosen mathematics actually earns credit at the student's level, and marks the student's draft against the descriptors. The tutor does not write, redraft or complete any part of it.

  • Criteria A to E explained with their mark allocations
  • Topic choice tested for level-appropriate mathematics before work begins
  • Feedback on the student's own draft; every edit made by the student
  • The authorship boundary stated to the student in the first session

Pre-Diploma bridging block

Four to eight sessions before Year 12 starts, for students coming out of MYP 5 or an IGCSE course into AA or AI. The work is almost entirely algebraic fluency, function language and notation, which are the three things that decide how the first term feels. It is the cheapest intervention on this page and the one families most often skip.

  • Diagnostic first, so the block targets the actual gap
  • Algebraic manipulation drilled to fluency rather than taught again
  • Function and notation conventions the DP assumes but does not teach
  • Course choice between AA and AI discussed with evidence, not instinct

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Hudayriyat Island

Each tutor below is listed against the specific IB maths course they teach rather than against a generic maths label. That distinction is the whole point of this page: AA Higher Level and AI Higher Level ask different things, and the tutor who can take a student through Maclaurin series is not automatically the tutor for Voronoi diagrams.

01

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation — the question that decides who can help

AA and AI are not two difficulty levels of the same course. They are different syllabuses with different content, different calculator rules and different university consequences. A tutor fluent in one can be close to useless in the other, and this is the single most common mismatch families in Abu Dhabi end up paying for. Before anything else, find out which course your child is enrolled in, at which level, and put that in the first message to any prospective tutor.

AA is the algebra-and-calculus course. It assumes manipulation as a working tool, examines a paper without technology, and at Higher Level adds proof by induction and contradiction, complex numbers, three-dimensional vectors, Maclaurin series and differential equations. AI is the modelling-and-data course. The graphic display calculator is assumed throughout both papers, and Higher Level adds matrices and eigenvalues, graph theory, and a considerably heavier statistical inference load including the t-test and Poisson distribution.

The university consequence is real and worth checking early rather than late. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics programmes commonly expect AA, often at Higher Level, while design, business, social science and life science routes are frequently satisfied by AI. Requirements vary by institution and by year, so the only sound method is to read the admissions pages of the specific universities on the student's list, including the UAE institutions, rather than relying on a general rule.

There is a practical tutoring consequence too. A student who has chosen AI because AA looked hard, but whose target degree expects AA, has a course-choice problem rather than a tutoring problem, and no number of sessions will substitute for the conversation with the school's IB coordinator. A good tutor will identify that in the first session and say so, which is worth considerably more than a term of competently delivered lessons in the wrong course.

The papers and the weightings, so you know what you are buying hours for

Standard Level is examined through two papers plus the exploration. Higher Level is examined through three papers plus the exploration. That third paper changes the whole shape of a tutoring plan, because it is the only component that tests extended, staged problem-solving rather than topic competence, and nothing in ordinary classwork prepares a student for it.

The arithmetic of the weightings is where families should start. At Standard Level, each written paper carries 40% of the grade and the exploration carries 20%. At Higher Level, the first two papers carry 30% each, the third carries 20% and the exploration carries 20%. Read that second row carefully: at Higher Level the exploration and Paper 3 together are 40% of the final grade, which is as much as both long papers combined. Most students spend almost none of their revision time on either.

Durations matter for the same reason. Standard Level papers run 90 minutes each. Higher Level Papers 1 and 2 run two hours each and Paper 3 runs an hour. A student who has never written for two hours continuously will lose marks in the final third of an HL paper for reasons that have nothing to do with mathematics, and timed practice is the only fix. This is one of the clearest arguments for booking exam-season work as a block rather than as more weekly sessions.

The table below is the structure as a parent should hold it. It is a planning document rather than a revision one: the right-hand column is what a tutoring plan should be doing about each component, which is a different question from what the component contains.

Ten minutes that tell you whether a tutor really teaches IB maths

  • Which exact course and level have you taught, and for how long?
  • How many marks is the exploration worth, and how are they split across the criteria?
  • What is Paper 3, how long is it, and how do you prepare a student for it?
  • Which Higher Level topics are new rather than extensions of Standard Level?
  • What would you do with a weak-algebra student who has chosen AA HL?
  • What will you not do with the exploration, and will you say that to my child?

Because the specialist pool is small, the market around it contains a lot of competent general mathematicians presenting as IB tutors. They are not frauds; they can genuinely teach calculus. What they cannot do is tell a student what the exploration's reflection criterion rewards, or why Paper 3 needs a different approach, or which parts of the Higher Level syllabus are new rather than extended. Those gaps cost a family a term before they become visible.

There is a short set of questions that separates the two groups quickly, and none of them require you to know any mathematics. Ask which course, at which level, the tutor has taught and for how long. Ask how many marks the exploration is worth and how they are distributed across the criteria. Ask what Paper 3 is and how long it lasts. Ask which Higher Level topics do not appear at Standard Level at all. A genuine IB maths teacher answers all four without pausing.

Then ask two harder ones. Ask what they would do with a student whose algebra is weak but who has chosen AA HL, because the honest answer involves the school and the course choice rather than more sessions. And ask what they will and will not do with the exploration, because the correct answer is a boundary rather than an offer, and a tutor who offers to help write it has told you something important about how they work.

Finally, ask what evidence sits behind any examiner claim. Several providers in this market describe tutors as examiners without anything verifiable attached, and the premium on the word is substantial. Which board, which component, which years. A tutor with genuine examiner experience answers that readily; one without it becomes vague, and vagueness at that question is a reliable signal.

04

The exploration: twenty marks, five criteria, and one boundary

The mathematical exploration is worth 20% of the final maths grade in all four courses, and it is assessed out of twenty marks across five criteria. Presentation carries four marks and rewards a coherent, organised, focused piece of writing. Mathematical communication carries four and rewards correct notation, defined terminology and consistent use of symbols. Personal engagement carries three and rewards evidence that the student actually thought about the topic. Reflection carries three and rewards discussion of the significance and limitations of the work. Use of mathematics carries six.

Set that distribution against how students behave. Most pour their effort into the mathematics, which is six of twenty marks, and treat the other fourteen as formatting. The highest-return hour of exploration tutoring available is almost always spent on reflection and communication, because those seven marks are the ones most frequently left on the table and the ones that respond fastest to specific feedback on a specific draft.

Topic choice is the other decisive factor, and it is decided before any tutoring can help. Mathematics that sits below the level of the course cannot earn the use-of-mathematics marks however well it is presented, and mathematics far above the course usually produces an exploration the student cannot discuss. A tutor earns their rate at the topic-choice stage by testing a proposal against the criteria early, which costs one session and saves a term.

The boundary is absolute. A tutor may explain what each criterion rewards in the IB's own language, may question whether the chosen mathematics earns credit at that level, may read the student's draft and say precisely where it falls short of a descriptor, and may ask questions that lead the student to notice a gap. A tutor may not write any part of the exploration, redraft a passage, supply a structure to fill in, or edit a draft to completion. Every word submitted must be the student's own, and IB academic-honesty rules make that an expulsion risk for the candidate rather than a problem for the tutor.

Where Higher Level students actually lose marks

The pattern repeats across Abu Dhabi IB cohorts and it is rarely about intelligence. In Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, the first collapse point is proof. Induction, contradiction and counterexample are new in every sense: not harder versions of Standard Level content but a different kind of mathematical activity, with conventions a student has never been taught. Able students lose marks because they produce a correct argument in a form the mark scheme does not recognise.

The second is multi-step algebra under time pressure on the non-calculator paper. A student who understands every individual technique still loses marks when a question requires four of them in sequence with no intermediate confirmation that they are on track. This is a fluency problem rather than a comprehension problem, and it responds to drilled practice, not to re-explanation. Many families buy the wrong remedy here and conclude that tutoring does not work.

In Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, the equivalent failure is interpretation. A student runs a chi-squared test correctly, reads the p-value correctly, and then writes a conclusion in statistics vocabulary instead of in the context of the question. The marks are explicitly for the contextual statement. The same pattern appears with regression, with confidence intervals and with the t-test, and it is one of the fastest things to fix once it has been named.

Across both courses, Paper 3 is the component nobody practises. It is 20% of the grade, it is one hour long, and it consists of extended questions that build in stages. Students trained entirely on topic exercises meet it for the first time in the examination room. A handful of sessions on staged problems changes performance here more than the same hours spread across topics, which is why it appears as its own mode of work higher up this page.

06

Specialist availability in Abu Dhabi, stated plainly

This is the section competing pages omit. No provider found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, and several conceal non-UAE delivery behind an overseas phone number. Being honest about availability is a better basis for a two-year relationship than pretending that every subject, level and time slot is always covered, so here is the actual position for IB mathematics in Abu Dhabi.

Standard Level teaching in both courses is reasonably covered, and a match is usually quick. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is thinner, and the thinnest point is the combination of Higher Level, a specific weekday evening slot in Gulf Standard Time, and the spring term when the whole emirate wants the same hours. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level is thinner still, because the matrices, graph theory and inference content narrows the pool further and AA teachers do not automatically cover it.

When a slot cannot be filled, we say so and give a realistic date instead of putting a general mathematician into an AA HL booking. Where no UAE-based specialist is available, the alternative is a tutor based elsewhere teaching the same IB course over the same video platform, with sessions timed to Gulf Standard Time, and that is disclosed before anything is booked. A parent is entitled to know who is teaching their child and from where.

The table below is that position set out by course and level. Match times are typical rather than guaranteed, and nothing in it is a promise about a particular week. It exists because a family planning a two-year Diploma needs to know where the supply is tight before they commit, not after.

ADEK, the permit, and why the nearest teacher is often the one you cannot hire

Abu Dhabi's private schools are licensed and inspected by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Dubai's regulator is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Sharjah's is the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has a Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. A Hudayriyat Island family sits inside the Abu Dhabi system, so inspection reports and school licensing come from ADEK.

Private tutoring is governed separately. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation issues a private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time through the smart app, website and e-services system. Offering private lessons without the permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

The part specific to this page is the conflict rule. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff restrict teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. In a city where the AA HL teaching population is concentrated in a handful of campuses, that rule removes a meaningful share of the nearest specialists from a given family's options. It is a good rule, and it is also why the local search feels so unproductive.

IB Gram holds no ADEK permit, no KHDA permit and no accreditation from the IB, and nothing here should be read as implying otherwise. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific licence for a specific kind of entity. What a parent can reasonably ask for is the tutor's permit position, the exact course they teach, and a free trial lesson before any payment.

08

Starting from Hudayriyat Island, and what we will tell you if we cannot help

Send four things: the school, the exact course and level, the most recent internal assessment grade, and the time slots that genuinely work once the bridge and the school run are accounted for. The last of those matters more for maths than for most subjects, because arithmetic accuracy degrades with tiredness in a way that essay writing does not. A session at a time the student is alert for is worth more than a longer one at a convenient hour.

The first lesson is a free trial with no card required. Use it as a diagnostic rather than a demonstration: ask for a past-paper question worked through and marked live, and ask at the end what the tutor thinks the underlying problem is. If the answer is a course-choice conversation with the IB coordinator rather than a term of sessions, that is the most valuable thing the hour could have produced, and a tutor who says it is the one to keep.

Pricing is quoted after the trial against the actual plan — course, level, number of sessions, whether an exploration block or a Paper 3 block is included. Market context for comparison: specialist IB rates in this market are published between AED 200 and 450 and upward, with one premium provider at AED 650, and in-home arrangements from AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the rate. Those are other providers' figures read in October 2026, not ours.

Finally, the honest limits. We do not publish IB session or results dates anywhere, because none could be verified from the IB directly, and a date a family plans around has to come from the school's IB coordinator or ibo.org. We do not reproduce IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we reference them and link to the official source. And we do not produce any part of an exploration, under any deadline pressure, which is a boundary the student is told about in the first session.

IB maths teaching in Abu Dhabi is spread thinly across these districts rather than concentrated in any one of them. Online delivery means the same tutor list serves every address below, which is the practical answer to a scarce specialist pool.

Al Bateen

Immediately across the Hudayriyat bridge and the first district most island families enter. IB Diploma provision sits here, so a Hudayriyat student may well be studying AA or AI within a few minutes of the crossing while their tutor options remain city-wide.

Saadiyat Island

Its own island, its own bridge, and its own IB cohort. A tutor serving both Saadiyat and Hudayriyat in one evening crosses most of Abu Dhabi island in between, which is why an in-home specialist on two islands is close to impossible to arrange.

Al Reem Island

Dense towers with a substantial international cohort and a short drive to the central island campuses. Reem families searching for AA HL help are drawing on the same small teaching pool as Hudayriyat families, during the same spring term.

Yas Island

At the eastern end of the city with its own campuses. The distance between Yas and Hudayriyat is the clearest illustration on this page of why proximity is a poor filter for a Higher Level maths specialist.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

The corridor along the Abu Dhabi–Dubai road, with heavy international enrolment and late-afternoon congestion. Sessions here start late for traffic reasons, which for a maths lesson is a real cost: tired students make arithmetic errors, not conceptual ones.

Khalifa City and Al Reef

Villa communities with large IB intakes and a well-known school-run bottleneck. The evening window is narrow, and an online slot that can start the moment the student is settled is worth more than a longer session that starts an hour later.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Mainland and further from the island campuses than most families expect. For an in-home arrangement this is the kind of distance that eliminates specialist availability altogether rather than merely raising the price.

Al Mushrif and the Corniche

Established central districts with older campuses and a broad curriculum mix. Many island families were enrolled here before moving, so the IB coordinator who sets their internal deadlines sits in a district they no longer live in.

Abu Dhabi island IB campuses

The IB provision Hudayriyat families reach across the bridge and along the island. Diploma mathematics is taught at a handful of these campuses, and the teaching staff who cover Higher Level at each one are usually a small number of individuals, which is the supply picture behind this whole page.

  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas corridor

The eastern cluster where a large share of Abu Dhabi's IB continuum enrolment sits. Families here ask the same question Hudayriyat families ask, and the answer is the same: the specialist exists somewhere in the emirate, rarely within driving distance of a specific villa.

Schools appear here only as context for the Abu Dhabi IB landscape; IB Gram has no affiliation with, relationship to or endorsement from any of them, and programme and inspection detail should be confirmed with the school and with ADEK.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course, not the subject

Say AA HL, AA SL, AI HL or AI SL rather than IB maths. This single detail determines which tutors are relevant and which are irrelevant, and getting it wrong is how families end up with a competent teacher of the wrong syllabus. If you are unsure, the school's IB coordinator or the student's timetable will confirm it in a minute.

  2. 02

Take the free trial as a diagnostic

One session, no card required. Ask for a past-paper question worked and marked live, then ask the tutor what the underlying problem is. Fluency, concept, technique and course-fit problems need different plans, and a tutor who cannot distinguish between them after an hour of a student's work is not the right match.

  3. 03

Decide the shape before the volume

Weekly sessions, a Paper 3 block, an exploration clinic and a pre-Diploma bridging block do different work. Choose the shape that matches the diagnosis rather than defaulting to a weekly slot, because the most common waste in IB maths tutoring is a year of general weekly sessions aimed at a specific, nameable gap.

  4. 04

Fix a slot the student is awake for

Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time. For Hudayriyat Island families the honest options are usually straight after the commute across the bridge or well after dinner, and the second is better for mathematics. Timing is reviewed after a fortnight once the real pattern of the week is visible rather than the theoretical one.

  5. 05

Work to the school's internal calendar

The tutor plans from your school's scheme of work, mock timetable and internal exploration deadlines. Those deadlines are set by the campus your child attends, which for island families is frequently some distance from the address, and they are the dates that actually constrain the work.

  6. 06

Review against marked work at six sessions

Six sessions is enough evidence to judge. If marked problem sets are not improving, the options are a different tutor, a different shape of work, or a conversation with the school about level or course. Adding hours to a plan that is not working is the most expensive response available.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the course, not on a maths label

Tutors are listed against AA HL, AA SL, AI HL or AI SL, because those are four syllabuses rather than four difficulty settings. An AA specialist has no particular claim on matrices and graph theory, and an AI specialist has none on Maclaurin series. Naming the course up front removes the most common mismatch in this market.

The availability answer is honest

Higher Level specialists are scarce in Abu Dhabi and this page says so, by course and by level. When a slot cannot be filled we give a realistic date instead of putting a general mathematician into the booking, and if the available specialist is based outside the UAE, that is disclosed before anything is booked.

Paper 3 and the exploration treated properly

At Higher Level those two components are 40% of the grade and they are the two nobody revises. They appear here as distinct modes of work with distinct methods, because an hour on staged extended problems does more than an hour of additional topic revision in the term before the session.

A stated boundary on the exploration

Tutors explain criteria, test topic choice, question reasoning and mark the student's own draft. They do not write, redraft or complete any part of it, and the student is told so in the first session. IB academic-honesty rules put the consequence of a breach on the candidate, which is reason enough to be explicit.

No claims we cannot evidence

IB Gram holds no ADEK permit, no KHDA permit and no IB accreditation, and says so plainly. There is no self-asserted rating, no outcome percentage without underlying data, and no examiner claim without the board, component and years attached. Several providers in this market do all three.

Dates taken from the source, or not published

No IB session or results date appears on this page, because none could be verified from the IB. Cambridge and Pearson dates are quoted with their source where relevant. Where a figure or a rule comes from a regulator, it comes from ADEK, MoHRE or the Ministry rather than from a paraphrase.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hudayriyat Island: your questions answered

Is there an IB maths tutor on Hudayriyat Island who teaches AA Higher Level?+

Within a short drive of the island, almost certainly not. Hudayriyat Island is reached by bridge from Al Bateen, the housing arrived before the school-age population, and there is no settled teaching community on the island to draw from. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is taught by a small number of people in Abu Dhabi, most of them employed full time at IB campuses elsewhere in the city. Online delivery removes distance as a filter, which is the only practical way to reach an actual AA HL teacher from this address. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI, and does it change who we need?+

It changes everything about who can help. Analysis and Approaches is the algebra-and-calculus course, examines one paper without technology, and at Higher Level adds proof by induction, complex numbers, three-dimensional vectors, Maclaurin series and differential equations. Applications and Interpretation assumes the graphic display calculator throughout and at Higher Level adds matrices and eigenvalues, graph theory and heavier statistical inference including the t-test. Neither set appears in the other course. A tutor who teaches AA HL well has no particular competence in AI HL content, so name the course and the level in your first message.

How many marks is the IB maths exploration worth, criterion by criterion?+

Twenty per cent, in all four courses, assessed out of twenty marks across five criteria. Presentation carries four, mathematical communication four, personal engagement three, reflection three, and use of mathematics six. That last number surprises most students: the mathematics itself is less than a third of the available marks. Reflection and communication are where marks are most often left on the table, and they respond quickly to specific feedback on a specific draft. At Higher Level the exploration and Paper 3 together are 40% of the final grade, which is as much as both long written papers combined.

What is Paper 3 and why does nobody seem to prepare for it?+

Paper 3 is a one-hour Higher Level paper of two extended questions that build in stages, worth 20% of the grade. It exists in both AA HL and AI HL. Students neglect it because ordinary classwork and revision are organised by topic, and no amount of topic practice teaches the skill the paper actually tests: reading ahead, recognising the structure of a staged problem, and persisting through an opening part that is not yet obviously useful. A short block of full extended questions under timed conditions changes performance here more than the same hours spread across topics.

How do I check that a maths tutor genuinely knows the IB course?+

Ask four questions that need no mathematics from you. Which exact course and level have you taught, and for how long? How many marks is the exploration worth, and how are they split across the criteria? What is Paper 3, how long is it, and how do you prepare for it? Which Higher Level topics do not appear at Standard Level at all? A genuine IB maths teacher answers all four without hesitating. A competent general mathematician presenting as an IB tutor usually answers the first and becomes vague on the rest, which is exactly the information you need.

Can a tutor help my child write the maths exploration?+

A tutor can help the student write it; a tutor cannot write it. The permitted work is substantial: explaining what each criterion rewards in the IB's own language, testing whether a proposed topic uses mathematics at the level of the course, reading the student's draft and saying precisely where it falls short of a descriptor, and asking questions that make the student find a gap. What is not permitted is writing any part of it, redrafting a passage, supplying a structure to fill in, or editing to completion. Every submitted word must be the student's, and the consequence of a breach falls on the candidate.

My child is strong at maths but has stalled in AA HL. What usually causes that?+

Two things, in this order. Proof is the first: induction, contradiction and counterexample are new in kind rather than in difficulty, with conventions the student has never been taught, so able students produce correct arguments in a form the mark scheme does not reward. The second is multi-step algebra under time pressure on the paper without technology, where somebody who understands every individual technique still fails to chain four of them with no confirmation they are on track. The first needs teaching; the second needs drilled fluency. Treating the second as a comprehension problem is the common and expensive mistake.

Does a Hudayriyat Island family need AA or AI for a UAE university place?+

It depends entirely on the degree and the institution, and the only sound method is to read each named university's current admissions pages, including the UAE ones. The general pattern is that mathematics, physics, engineering and many economics programmes expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, while business, design, social science and life science routes are frequently satisfied by Applications and Interpretation. Requirements change year to year. If the target degree expects AA and the student has chosen AI, that is a course-choice conversation with the IB coordinator rather than a tutoring problem, and no number of sessions substitutes for it.

Why can't we just hire a maths teacher from my child's own school?+

Because the rules in this emirate restrict it. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff restrict teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Teachers tutoring outside school hours also need that permit. Since Abu Dhabi's AA HL teaching population is concentrated in a handful of campuses, this removes a real share of the nearest specialists from any one family's options, which is a large part of why the local search feels unproductive.

What do specialist IB maths tutors charge in this market?+

Published UAE figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with IB and A-Level specialists quoted from AED 200 to 450 and upward and one premium examiner-led provider at AED 650. In-home arrangements are quoted from AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the rate. Those were read from other providers' pages in October 2026 and are not IB Gram prices. The useful observation is that the premium on specialist IB maths is scarcity, not travel, so driving further does not reduce it. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson.

How many maths sessions a week does a Diploma student usually need?+

One a week through most of the two years, with a second added during the final term or for a specific block, is the shape most families settle on. The limiting factor is how much marked practice the student completes between sessions rather than contact hours, which is why problem sets are set and returned with comments. Where the diagnosis is a fluency gap rather than a conceptual one, short frequent practice beats longer sessions. Review against marked work at six sessions, and if nothing is moving, change the tutor or the shape of the work rather than adding hours.

Can my child get help before Year 12 starts, coming out of MYP?+

That is the highest-return block available and the one families most often skip. Four to eight sessions over the summer, aimed almost entirely at algebraic fluency, function language and notation conventions, decide how the first term of AA or AI feels. MYP mathematics rewards investigation and communication, which is a genuine strength and also why some students arrive with weaker manipulation than an IGCSE cohort. Closing that gap before Year 12 costs general rates; closing it in the middle of Year 12 costs specialist rates under time pressure, and competes with new content for the same hours.

Does IB Gram publish the IB exam and results dates for the May session?+

No, deliberately. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no IB session or results date in this project was verified from the IB itself, and publishing an unverified date that a family plans around would be worse than publishing nothing. Abu Dhabi IB schools sit the May session, and a November session also exists. For actual dates, ask your school's IB coordinator or read ibo.org directly. Cambridge and Pearson dates are a different matter and are sourced where this site uses them, including Pearson's November timetable and results timings.

What if no AA Higher Level specialist is free in the slot we need?+

We say so and give a realistic date rather than putting a general mathematician into the booking. Higher Level availability in Abu Dhabi is genuinely limited, and the tightest combination is Higher Level plus a fixed weekday evening slot plus the spring term, when the whole emirate wants the same hours. Where no UAE-based specialist is available for the course, the alternative is a specialist based elsewhere teaching the same IB course over the same platform with sessions timed to Gulf Standard Time, disclosed before anything is booked. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Will an online tutor plan from our Abu Dhabi school's scheme of work?+

The school's. We ask which campus your child attends even though the lesson is online, because the internal exploration deadlines, the mock timetable and the order in which topics are taught all belong to that school. A tutor running their own sequence will be teaching differentiation while the class is being assessed on probability, which undermines the point of one-to-one work. Where the tutor thinks the school's order is creating a problem, they say so to you rather than quietly working around it, and the conversation that follows usually belongs with the subject teacher.
