IB and IGCSE tutors for Hudayriyat Island families

A school timetable can deliver content. It cannot deliver the forty-odd independent hours each Diploma subject needs, and that is the half parents on Hudayriyat Island are usually trying to buy when they search for IB and IGCSE tutors in Hudayriyat Island. This page publishes the arithmetic: what class time covers, what is left for the student alone, the internal assessment criteria letter by letter with their marks, and the word limits on every assessed component. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Taught hours and independent hours separated and counted per component
  • Internal assessment criteria named by letter with their mark allocations
  • Word and page limits for every assessed component in one table
  • One-to-one over live video, scheduled around training on the island

IB & IGCSE in Hudayriyat Island

The taught course and the unsupervised course are two different courses

Hudayriyat Island is residential at one end and a recreation district at the other, reached by bridge from the western side of Abu Dhabi island. No school sits on it, so every child here is schooled in Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah, Al Mushrif or further out, and comes home to a quiet, low-density neighbourhood. That combination matters more than it sounds. Island households have good conditions for independent study and very little structure imposed on it, and the Diploma and IGCSE both assume a great deal of structured independent study.

Here is the arithmetic a school prospectus never prints. A Diploma Higher Level subject is nominally 240 hours of teaching across two years. The internal assessment, the past-paper practice, the reading and the revision that convert those taught hours into a grade are not inside that figure. Across six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, a Diploma student is carrying several hundred hours of work that no teacher schedules, supervises or marks along the way. IGCSE is the same shape in miniature: content is delivered in class, and the discipline of working under timed conditions against a mark scheme is almost entirely homework.

That gap is where grades are actually decided, and it is also why strong classroom teaching and a disappointing result are perfectly compatible. A parent sees good lessons, attentive staff and a reasonable report, then a mock grade two bands below expectation. Nothing has gone wrong in the classroom. The unsupervised half has been done badly or not at all, usually because nobody wrote down what it consists of.

So this page writes it down. It separates taught time from independent time, component by component. It names the internal assessment criteria by their letters with the marks attached, because a student working alone on an investigation needs to know that research design and evaluation carry six marks each rather than being vague about quality. It publishes the word and page limits for every assessed component in one place. And it says where IGCSE marks leave the page in the gap between Year 10 content and a Year 11 paper.

What a tutor adds in this picture is supervision of work the school does not supervise, not a second delivery of the syllabus. One hour a week spent re-teaching a lesson your child already sat is an hour wasted, and parents buy it constantly because it is the easiest thing to ask for. One hour spent marking their timed paper against the real mark scheme, or interrogating their investigation method before any data is collected, changes the half of the course that was previously unobserved by anyone. Those lessons run one-to-one over live video, which happens to be the right format for work built around marked scripts, criteria and shared documents rather than around a whiteboard.

At a glance

  • A Higher Level subject is around 240 taught hours; the independent load sits outside that
  • Internal assessments, timed practice and revision are scheduled by nobody
  • Good classroom teaching and a weak mock grade are entirely compatible
  • Criteria letters and mark allocations are published here so a student can aim at them
  • Tuition is one-to-one over live video, built around marked work on a shared screen
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Island families are schooled across the western districts of Abu Dhabi island, which means a mix of the IB continuum and British routes. The notes below are about the independent load each programme imposes rather than about what each one covers.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each marked against four criteria lettered A to D and scored out of eight. The MYP deliberately assesses process as well as product, so a student who can do the mathematics but cannot document a method loses marks that look mysterious on a report card.

The MYP Personal Project is the first piece of work a student has to run alone from start to finish, and it arrives in Year 10 or 11. For a Hudayriyat household it is also the first test of whether the quiet house translates into actual output. We coach the process, the goal and the reflection; the project remains the student's own throughout.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The core alone carries a 4,000-word essay and a 1,600-word Theory of Knowledge essay, both produced over months with no lesson time allocated to the writing itself.

Diploma students reaching Hudayriyat Island come from the Al Bateen and Al Mushrif school cluster, where Higher Level provision is reasonable but class sizes limit individual feedback on draft work. The component most often neglected here is the internal assessment, which at 20% of a science grade is worth more than most families realise.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel both operate here, and the papers differ even where subject names match. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 runs a Core tier on papers 1 and 3 with a grade ceiling at C, and an Extended tier on papers 2 and 4 reaching A*. Pearson's 4MA1 tiers as Foundation and Higher instead.

The independent half of IGCSE is timed practice against mark schemes, and almost no school has enough lesson time to run it properly. A Year 11 student who has never marked their own script against the published scheme is guessing at what examiners reward, which is the single commonest reason capable students underperform.

ALEVELAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level

Linear A Levels with all assessment at the end of the course, which pushes the independent burden even further than the Diploma does. There is no coursework safety net in most subjects, so the entire grade rests on performance across a small number of papers sat within a few weeks.

Families choosing between the Diploma and A Levels in the western districts should weigh the independent-work profile, not just the breadth. A Level suits a student who can self-direct deep work in three subjects; the Diploma spreads the load but adds the core, which is itself several hundred unsupervised hours.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the components island students most often ask for help with, described by what each one assesses and where the marks tend to leave the page.

Physics

HL and SL

Papers 1 and 2 at 36% and 44%, scientific investigation at 20%. Independent practice is where fields and circuits are won; students who only ever see worked examples in class cannot produce a mechanism-level written explanation under time pressure.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Same paper structure and the same 20% investigation. Organic mechanisms need handwritten repetition, not reading, and that repetition is homework. A tutor's job here is to check the drawings and the arrow placement, which is quick on a shared screen.

Biology

HL and SL

Built on unifying themes rather than a topic checklist, so unseen-context questions dominate Paper 2. The reliable loss point is answering a command term for explanation with a description of a trend, which only practice against mark schemes fixes.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level is two papers at 40% each plus a 20% exploration; Higher Level adds Paper 3 at 20%. Paper 3's extended investigation is unlike anything in a textbook and has to be practised deliberately rather than encountered for the first time in May.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics with the graphic display calculator throughout. Marks go on interpretation: a correct statistical output followed by no sentence stating what it means in context scores the calculation and nothing else.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis in Paper 1, comparative essay in Paper 2, Individual Oral at 30% of Standard Level. Higher Level adds the HL essay at 20%. Independent reading improves the ceiling; only timed essay practice moves the actual mark.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level runs Paper 1 at 30%, Paper 2 at 40% and the portfolio at 30%, with a quantitative Paper 3 added at Higher Level. The three-commentary portfolio is the most coachable element in the course and the one students leave latest.

Mathematics (IGCSE)

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended · Pearson 4MA1

Tier choice sets a hard grade ceiling, so the decision needs marked evidence behind it. Beyond that, the gains come from working past papers under genuine timed conditions and self-marking against the scheme.

Physics (IGCSE)

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Electricity and waves are the predictable weak strands. The alternative-to-practical paper rewards specific experimental vocabulary that is rarely drilled in class, and it is fully learnable in a handful of focused sessions.

Chemistry (IGCSE)

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Moles and electrolysis separate grades at the top end. Qualitative analysis tables reward memorised observation detail, which is an independent-study task that pays for itself quickly once a student knows it exists.

Theory of Knowledge

Diploma core

A 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title plus the exhibition with its 950-word commentary. Almost no revision time is allocated to it anywhere, and it affects the diploma total through the bonus points matrix alongside the Extended Essay.

Extended Essay

Diploma core

4,000 words in a subject of the student's choosing, assessed against published criteria covering focus, knowledge, critical thinking, presentation and engagement. The commonest failure is a question too broad to answer inside the limit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The patterns below exist because the independent half of a course fails in three distinct ways: nothing gets scheduled, coursework drifts, or timed practice never happens under real conditions. Each mode targets one of those.

Weekly supervision of independent work

The tutor does not re-teach the lesson. The hour is spent on what the student produced since the last session: a timed question marked against the real scheme, a set of mechanisms checked, a practice essay annotated. The week's independent work is set at the end and inspected at the start of the next session.

  • Work set between sessions, then actually checked
  • Marking done against the published scheme, with the student watching
  • Same tutor each week so patterns of error are visible
  • Short written note after each session naming what was set

Component blocks for coursework

Three or four sessions placed at the points where an investigation, exploration or Extended Essay actually fails: the question, the method, and the criterion the draft is missing. This is the pattern for a student who is coping in class and drifting on coursework, which describes most Diploma students by February of the first year.

  • Session one on whether the question is answerable in the word limit
  • Session two on method and data quality before collection
  • Session three reading the draft against criteria by letter
  • Feedback on the student's own text only

Timed-conditions practice

A full paper sat under real timing, then marked and dissected. Most students have never done this outside a mock hall, which is why their first experience of real time pressure is the mock itself. Running three or four of these across a term changes performance more reliably than any amount of content revision.

  • Full paper under genuine timing, not a question set
  • Marked against the official scheme, mark by mark
  • A written breakdown of where time and marks were lost
  • Repeated on the same paper type to prove the change

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Hudayriyat Island

01

What class time delivers, and what the student is left holding

Separate the course into what a teacher can and cannot do with the hours available, and the tutoring question answers itself. A teacher delivers content, models technique, sets homework and marks a limited amount of it. A teacher cannot sit with one student while they attempt a Paper 3 investigation under time pressure, cannot read four drafts of one essay, and cannot supervise the forty hours of practice that convert understanding into marks.

Hudayriyat households are unusually well placed for the independent half and unusually likely to leave it unstructured. The island is quiet, the houses are large, and there is no noisy apartment block or sibling crowding in the way. What there also is not, is a set of imposed deadlines. A student in a busy household sometimes works better because the day has edges. Here the day does not, and work slides.

The table below splits the Diploma and IGCSE workload by component. The point of it is not precision to the hour; it is the ratio. For most components the unsupervised portion is the larger portion, and for the Diploma core it is almost all of it. Once a parent sees that, the conversation changes from how many hours of tutoring to which unsupervised component is being neglected.

Read the right-hand column as a shopping list. The components with the highest independent share and the clearest published criteria are the ones where outside supervision has the largest effect per hour spent. The components that are mostly taught, and examined on content recall, are the ones to leave to the school.

02

The independent week, written down instead of assumed

  • Name the task, the output and how it will be checked
  • Two weekend blocks of ninety minutes, three weekday blocks of forty-five
  • Every block leaves something behind that can be inspected
  • The weekly session inspects and corrects; it does not re-teach

Students do not fail to revise because they are lazy. They fail because nobody has ever told them what an hour of independent work should contain, so the hour becomes re-reading notes, which feels like study and produces nothing. The fix is prescriptive and dull: name the task, name the output, name how it will be checked.

A usable Diploma week for a Hudayriyat student looks like this. Two blocks of ninety minutes at the weekend, one on the heaviest Higher Level subject and one on coursework. Three weekday blocks of forty-five minutes, each with a single output: five examination questions marked against the scheme, one mechanism sheet, one page of an essay plan. One block for the core, which almost everyone skips, and which is where the bonus points sit. That is roughly seven hours. It is considerably less than most parents imagine and considerably more than most students actually do.

Every block needs an output that exists afterwards. A marked question with the lost marks circled is an output. A completed error log is an output. Forty minutes of reading is not, because nothing afterwards can be inspected. This single rule, applied for a term, does more than changing tutors.

The role of the weekly session in this scheme is inspection and correction. If the student arrives with nothing to inspect, the session becomes a lesson, and a lesson is the least valuable use of the hour because the school already delivered one. We say that at the first session so the expectation is set from the start.

03

Internal assessment criteria, letter by letter, with the marks attached

Ask a Diploma student what their investigation is marked on and most will say quality of the science. Ask them which criterion carries six marks and almost none can answer. That is a straightforward information failure, and it is fixable in one session. A student who knows that the evaluation criterion carries the same weight as the data analysis stops writing two lines of evaluation at midnight.

In the current science guides the scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks. In Mathematics the exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. The last of those carries six of the twenty marks, which is why a mathematically thin exploration cannot be rescued by beautiful presentation.

The practical use of this table is to audit a draft. Read the draft with the criteria beside it and ask, for each letter, what in this document evidences that criterion. If the honest answer for one of them is nothing, you have found where the marks are. That is a twenty-minute exercise a parent can do without any subject knowledge at all, and it identifies the problem before a tutor is even engaged.

Always confirm the current criteria and mark allocations against your child's own subject guide or their coordinator, because guides are revised on a cycle and a sibling's version may be out of date. We do not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson subject guides, mark schemes or past papers; they are the boards' copyright and should be obtained through the school.

04

Word and page limits across every assessed component

Limits are the one part of the assessment architecture that is entirely knowable in advance, and students still breach them. A Theory of Knowledge essay at 1,900 words is not a slightly long essay; material beyond the limit is not read. An Extended Essay that runs past 4,000 words loses the end of its argument, which is usually the part that earns the critical-thinking marks.

The limits also do planning work that students rarely recognise. Four thousand words is not very much for a research question that requires three bodies of literature. Twelve pages of mathematics is not very much for an exploration involving a long derivation. If a student cannot sketch how their piece fits inside the limit before they start, the question is wrong, and that is a far cheaper discovery to make in week one than in week ten.

Collect the limits for all the components your child is carrying onto one sheet at the start of the year and put it where they work. Island households have the wall space and the quiet, and this is the single cheapest intervention available. Most students have never seen the full set in one place.

Confirm every figure against the current subject guide for your child's cohort, since limits and the treatment of appendices are revised periodically and a sibling's version of a course may be out of date. The table below reflects the long-standing limits for the components Hudayriyat students most often carry, and the right-hand column names what examiners most often see mishandled inside each one. Treat it as a planning document at the start of the year rather than a reference consulted in a panic the week before submission.

Training on the island and study in the same evening

  • Front-load coursework into the months before a competition block
  • Heavy academic work goes in non-training mornings
  • Weekday blocks stay short and single-purpose for a tired student
  • Sessions on video move with the training calendar instead of lapsing

Hudayriyat is a recreation district as much as a residential one, with cycling, skating, water sports and a sports hub on the doorstep. A high proportion of island teenagers train seriously, and that is a good thing academically until the calendar collides. Training four evenings a week plus a competition weekend removes exactly the blocks a Diploma student needs for independent work, and the collision usually becomes visible in the first mock season rather than when the schedule is set.

Athletes are often the easiest students to plan with, because they already understand periodisation. The same logic applies to study: build volume in the off-season, taper into a competition or an exam, and do not attempt both peaks at once. A student with a competition block in February should front-load coursework into November and December rather than discovering in February that an investigation is due.

Practically, that means two things. Put the heavy academic work in the mornings of non-training days, which on this island usually means a weekend morning. And treat the forty-five-minute weekday block as genuinely short and single-purpose: five marked questions, one mechanism sheet, one essay plan. A tired athlete can complete a defined forty-five-minute task after training; they cannot complete an undefined two-hour study session, and pretending otherwise produces guilt rather than marks.

The scheduling flexibility of live video matters here more than anywhere. A session can move to a morning, run from a hotel during a competition week, or shift by a day without anyone driving anywhere. A fixed in-home appointment is the arrangement that breaks first under a training calendar.

06

Where IGCSE marks leave the page between Year 10 and the final paper

  • Command terms: describe and explain are not interchangeable
  • Count creditable points against the mark tariff before moving on
  • Collapse in the final third of a paper is a pacing problem
  • The alternative-to-practical paper is learnable in a handful of hours

IGCSE students lose marks in a small number of repeatable ways, and almost none of them are about not knowing the content. The first is command-term misreading: answering describe when the question said explain, which costs the analysis marks every single time it happens. The second is unit and significant-figure discipline in the sciences and in mathematics, where the physics is right and the answer is not.

The third is the structured question with escalating mark tariffs. A six-mark question needs six distinct creditable points, and students who write a dense paragraph of three ideas score three. Teaching a student to count their own points against the tariff before moving on is a fifteen-minute intervention with a measurable effect across every paper.

The fourth is timing, which masquerades as weakness. A student who scores well on the first two-thirds of a paper and collapses in the last third has a pacing problem, not a knowledge problem, and buying content lessons for a pacing problem is throwing money at the wrong target. This is why we want to see a marked script before recommending anything: the distribution of lost marks across the paper distinguishes the two cases immediately.

The fifth, specific to the sciences, is the alternative-to-practical paper, which rewards experimental vocabulary and answer conventions that are rarely drilled anywhere. How to state a variable, how to describe a precaution, how to read an instrument to the right precision: these are conventions rather than science, and they are learnable in a handful of focused hours. It is the highest-return few hours available to an IGCSE science candidate and almost nobody spends them, because practical lesson time goes on the practical itself.

07

A home tutor on the island against a specialist on a shared screen

Parents here do search for a home tutor, and the reasoning is sound: a quiet villa, a large table, nobody needs to go anywhere. It is worth answering the question honestly before stating what we actually offer. An independent tutor driving to Hudayriyat Island is crossing the bridge twice, and that travel is inside the rate. Market in-home rates run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for a comparably qualified tutor working online, on the published competitor pricing and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table. The larger cost is choice: the available pool narrows to whoever will make that drive on a weekday evening.

IB Gram does not make home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Abu Dhabi lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, and that is better said here than discovered later.

For the work this page is about, the screen is genuinely the better tool rather than a compromise. Supervising independent study means looking at documents: a marked script with the lost marks circled, a draft investigation beside its criteria, a mark scheme open in a second window, a mechanism being drawn and corrected in real time. All of that is easier shared on a screen than passed across a table, and the session recording or the annotated file still exists the following week, which a kitchen-table conversation does not.

The honest limitation is supervision of attention. A student who needs an adult physically present to stay on task is harder to hold on video, particularly below about thirteen. For those students we recommend shorter sessions and a parent within earshot rather than claiming the format solves everything.

Academic honesty when most of the work happens alone

  • Questions, methods and criteria coaching, as early in the process as possible
  • Feedback against published criteria, on the student's own text
  • No supplied text, no rewriting to completion, no ready-made topics or data
  • Board materials referenced and linked, never reproduced or handed over

The more of a course a student completes unsupervised, the more the honesty question matters. An internal assessment, an exploration, an Extended Essay and a Theory of Knowledge essay are all produced at home over weeks, and the rules require them to be the student's own work. A malpractice finding falls on the student and can cost the diploma, so this is their exposure rather than a tutor's.

What a tutor legitimately does with that work is substantial. Pressing on whether a research question can be answered inside the word limit. Pointing out that a planned method cannot generate data capable of supporting a conclusion, before any data exists. Reading a draft against the published criteria and naming the letter that is unevidenced. Teaching the skill the draft lacks, then returning it. Asking the student to justify a paragraph out loud, which exposes borrowed reasoning faster than any software.

What a tutor must not do is supply text, rewrite a section into something the student could not have produced, edit a draft to completion, or hand over a ready-made topic, structure or data set. One operation in this market sells finished Diploma internal assessments outright. That product is an integrity breach dressed up as a service, and the family carries the consequence, not the seller.

There is also a sourcing rule worth knowing. We do not supply or reproduce subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables from the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Those are the boards' copyright and your child's school can provide them legitimately. Anything a tutor needs to reference, we reference and link rather than redistribute.

09

Starting from the last marked script

  • Send the last marked script; it distinguishes content, technique and pacing
  • The trial session is a diagnostic and may advise against buying lessons
  • Cadence is set against training, coursework deadlines and Ramadan hours
  • Rare subject coverage is stated honestly before you plan around it

The first thing we ask for is the most recent piece of work a teacher marked, because it answers questions that conversation cannot. The distribution of lost marks across a paper distinguishes a content gap from a technique gap from a pacing problem. Teacher comments on a draft show whether the student is being told the same thing repeatedly and not acting on it. A clean script with a disappointing total usually means marks are leaving over command terms and tariffs rather than over understanding.

The trial session is a diagnostic rather than an introduction. The tutor works through that script with your child, establishes which of the failure modes is actually operating, and writes down what a term of supervision would consist of. You keep that plan whether or not you go further. If the conclusion is that your child needs a protected study hour and an error log rather than a tutor, that is what we will say, and it has happened often enough that we mention it on the page.

Then the cadence is set against the island calendar: training days, competition blocks, the school's own coursework deadlines rather than the board's, and the Ramadan period when the school day shortens and an early afternoon slot becomes briefly available. A pattern chosen against the real calendar survives the term. A pattern chosen in optimism does not.

On availability, we are straight with you up front. Coverage for the rarer Diploma languages and some Higher Level combinations is thin in this time zone, and a specific weekday slot in a rare subject may simply not exist. When that is the case we say so and offer the nearest genuine alternative rather than putting a generalist in front of a Higher Level paper. It is also worth asking any tutor you consider, from any provider, whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Hudayriyat Island

Hudayriyat households are schooled across the western and central districts of Abu Dhabi island. These are the areas that define the commute and, with it, when independent study actually happens.

Al Bateen

The nearest established school district, reached without touching the central business area. Al Bateen Academy and the American Community School sit here, and a Bateen school place gives Hudayriyat families their shortest afternoon.

the Corniche

The route rather than the destination for most island families, and the stretch where the afternoon is lost. A collection from a Khalidiyah or Ras Al Akhdar school realistically means being home after half past four.

Al Reem Island

An apartment island on the far side of the city with its own school provision. Relevant to Hudayriyat households who moved west and kept a Reem school place, which converts a walk into a cross-city drive.

Saadiyat Island

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat cluster, reached by crossing the city. The Diploma provision is strong, but from Hudayriyat it is the longest regular school run in this list and it pushes weekday sessions late.

Al Raha Beach

On the highway corridor towards the airport, with a mix of British and American provision nearby. Hudayriyat families rarely school here, but it is where several of the emirate's teaching staff live, which shapes tutor availability.

Khalifa City

The deepest school cluster in the emirate, including the British International School Abu Dhabi and GEMS American Academy. From Hudayriyat it is a committed drive, and families who do it usually chose a specific Higher Level combination.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Mainland district with a large Indian and Pakistani curriculum presence. It matters here mainly for students transferring from a national board into IGCSE, where the independent-study expectations change sharply.

Yas Island

Across the city to the east, with American and British provision. Event weekends reshape the evening traffic pattern for anyone commuting that way, which is an argument for weekend-morning study slots rather than Friday ones.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Hudayriyat Island

Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah and Al Ras Al Akhdar

The western city cluster that most Hudayriyat children attend. Established schools with good Higher Level coverage and, like all large cohorts, limited capacity to give individual feedback on draft coursework.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Sheikh Zayed Private Academy
  • Al Khubairat Community School
  • Al Muna Academy

Al Mushrif and central island

The second cluster within reach, mixing IB and British provision. Several of these schools run the full continuum, which changes the independent-study profile from Year 7 rather than from Year 12.

  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Nahda National School
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi

Schools are named to describe the educational context around Hudayriyat Island. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them, and none is a client.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the last marked piece of work

A mock script, a returned essay or a coursework draft with teacher comments. Where the marks were lost across the page tells a specialist whether the problem is content, exam technique or timing, and that distinction decides what is worth buying. Description of the problem is far less useful than the document itself.

  2. 02

    Audit the independent half

We list the components your child is carrying that nobody supervises: the investigation, the exploration, the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay, timed practice. Then we ask which of them currently has a date, an output and somebody checking it. The empty rows are the plan.

  3. 03

Meet the matched tutor for a diagnostic hour

The tutor works through the script and the coursework drafts with your child against the published criteria, names the criterion or technique that is unevidenced, and writes down what a term of supervision would contain. The plan is yours whether or not you continue with us.

  4. 04

Fix the weekly output, not just the slot

Each week has a named task and a named output that exists afterwards and can be inspected. The session begins with that output rather than with a lesson. This is the part that changes results, and it is the part students have never had described to them before.

  5. 05

    Re-measure on external evidence

The next mock, the next criterion-marked draft, the next timed paper under real conditions. If the external evidence has not moved after a reasonable run of sessions, the plan changes or the tutor does. Sessions feeling productive is not evidence of anything.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We target the unsupervised half

The school delivers content and marks a share of the homework. We supervise the components nobody else sees: the investigation, the exploration, the core essays, the timed practice. Buying a second delivery of a lesson your child already attended is the most common waste of a tutoring budget in this market.

Criteria and marks published, not implied

This page names the internal assessment criteria by letter with their mark allocations and sets out the word limit on every assessed component. A student who knows the evaluation criterion carries six marks writes a different evaluation. The information itself is free, and almost nobody publishes it.

Every session leaves evidence

Marked questions with lost marks circled, an error log, a draft annotated against criteria. The written note after each session names what was covered and what was set, so the next week starts from something inspectable rather than from a conversation about how things are going.

Board materials referenced, never redistributed

We do not supply subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables from the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. They are the boards' copyright and your child's school can provide them. IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from any board or from ADEK, and claims none.

Scheduling that survives a training calendar

Island teenagers train seriously, and a fixed appointment is the first thing a competition block destroys. Live video sessions move to a morning, run from a hotel or shift by a day without anybody driving, which is why they survive the season rather than quietly lapsing in week five.

A coursework line stated plainly

Questions, methods, criteria and feedback on the student's own text. No supplied sentences, no rewriting to completion, no ready-made topics or data sets. Operations in this market sell finished internal assessments; the student carries the malpractice risk, which is exactly why we draw the line where we do.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hudayriyat Island: your questions answered

How many independent study hours does a Diploma subject actually need?+

A Higher Level subject is nominally around 240 taught hours across two years, and the internal assessment, past-paper practice, reading and revision that turn those hours into a grade sit outside that figure entirely. Across six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, a Diploma student carries several hundred hours that nobody schedules, supervises or marks along the way. That is why strong classroom teaching and a weak mock grade coexist so often. The useful question is not how many hours, but which of those unsupervised components currently has a deadline and somebody checking it.

Why is my child doing well in class and badly in mocks?+

Because class performance and examination performance measure different things. Class work is untimed, supported and often collaborative. A mock is a timed solo performance scored against a mark scheme, and the specific skills it requires, reading command terms correctly, matching answer length to the mark tariff and pacing across a full paper, are practised almost entirely at home. A student who has never marked their own script against the published scheme is guessing at what earns credit. Send us the mock script; where the lost marks sit across the paper usually identifies the cause within minutes.

What is the Diploma scientific investigation marked out of?+

In the current science guides it is marked out of 24 across four criteria, each worth six marks: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It carries 20% of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level. Most students can name the first two and treat evaluation as a closing paragraph written late, which is where six available marks quietly disappear. Confirm the allocation against your child's own subject guide, since guides are revised on a cycle, and ask their coordinator rather than relying on a sibling's older version of the course.

How many marks does the use of mathematics criterion carry in the exploration?+

Six of the twenty available marks. The Mathematics exploration is assessed across five criteria: presentation at four marks, mathematical communication at four, personal engagement at three, reflection at three, and use of mathematics at six. The practical consequence is that a mathematically thin exploration cannot be rescued by careful formatting, and a topic that does not demand mathematics at the level of the course caps the mark before any writing begins. That is why the topic conversation is the single highest-value session available, and it belongs at the start rather than near the deadline.

What should an hour of independent revision actually contain?+

A named task with an output that exists afterwards. Five examination questions attempted under time and marked against the scheme, with lost marks circled. One mechanism sheet completed by hand. One essay plan with the argument in the right order. An error log updated with this week's recurring mistakes. Re-reading notes is not an output, because nothing afterwards can be inspected, which is why it feels like work and produces nothing. Students rarely resist this once it is described; they simply have never had it described to them.

Is the Theory of Knowledge essay worth spending tutoring money on?+

Often yes, and almost nobody does. It is 1,600 words on a prescribed title, produced over months with essentially no lesson time allocated to the writing, and alongside the Extended Essay it feeds the bonus points matrix that can move a final diploma total. Students treat it as unexaminable because it does not look like a subject. Two or three sessions on title choice, argument structure and the use of real examples from their own subjects is usually enough, and it is cheap relative to its effect on the total.

Do tutors visit homes on Hudayriyat Island?+

Not through us. IB Gram does not make home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India, and Abu Dhabi lessons run one-to-one over live video. Independent in-home tutors do cross the bridge, and their rates carry that travel, which is why market in-home figures run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 online. For the work this page describes, marked scripts, drafts against criteria and mark schemes side by side, a shared screen is the better tool rather than a substitute.

My child trains most evenings. Can tutoring fit around that?+

Yes, and the planning is the same as training planning. Build academic volume in the off-season, taper into a competition block, and never attempt both peaks at once. Put heavy work in the mornings of non-training days, which here usually means a weekend. Keep weekday sessions short and single-purpose, because a tired athlete will complete a defined forty-five-minute task and will not complete an undefined two-hour one. Live video sessions move to a morning or run from a hotel during a competition week without anyone driving anywhere.

What is the word limit on the Extended Essay and what happens if it is exceeded?+

Four thousand words, covering the main body with the introduction and conclusion. Material beyond the limit is not read, which in practice means a student who overruns loses the end of their argument, and the end is usually where the critical-thinking marks are earned. Appendices are not a way around it: an argument hidden in an appendix is not assessed either. If your child cannot sketch how their essay fits inside 4,000 words before starting, the research question is too broad, and that is a cheap thing to discover in week one.

Which IGCSE paper gives the best return for a few hours of work?+

The alternative-to-practical paper in the sciences, almost every time. It rewards experimental vocabulary and answer conventions, how to state a variable, how to describe a precaution, how to read an instrument, that are rarely drilled in class because practical time is spent on the practical itself. Those conventions are learnable in a handful of focused sessions and they transfer across all three sciences. After that, command-term discipline and counting creditable points against the mark tariff are the next highest-return interventions available.

Can a tutor read my child's internal assessment draft?+

Yes, against the published criteria, and that is the single most useful thing a tutor does with coursework. The tutor names which criterion letter is currently unevidenced, teaches the skill the draft is missing and hands it back. What must not happen is text being supplied, a section being rewritten into something the student could not have produced, a draft being edited to completion, or a topic or data set being handed over ready-made. A malpractice finding falls on the student, so the boundary exists for their protection.

Will you send us past papers and mark schemes?+

No. Subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the copyright of the IB, Cambridge and Pearson, and redistributing them is not something we do. Your child's school can supply them legitimately, and the boards publish specimen material on their own sites. A tutor working with your child will reference and link official material rather than hand over copies. Any provider offering a library of board documents as a selling point is telling you something about how they treat rules generally.

How do I tell a content gap from a timing problem?+

Look at where the marks were lost across the paper rather than at the total. Marks missing evenly throughout, including on early low-tariff questions, suggests content. Strong performance across the first two-thirds followed by a collapse, blank final questions or one-line answers to six-mark items, is pacing. Marks lost on the analysis half of questions the student clearly understood is command-term misreading. Those three cases need completely different purchases, which is why we want the marked script before recommending anything at all.

Does the quiet of a low-density island help or hurt study?+

Both, and families are often surprised by the second half. The conditions are excellent: space, quiet, no competing noise. What a low-density neighbourhood does not supply is imposed structure, and students who work well in busy houses sometimes do so because the day has edges. Here the day does not. The fix is not more hours but more definition, naming the task, the output and how it will be checked, so that the quiet becomes productive rather than simply undisturbed.

What happens if we start supervision only six weeks before the papers?+

It is still worth doing, but the target changes. Six weeks is not enough for content rebuilding and it is ample for technique: command terms, mark tariffs, pacing across a full paper and self-marking against the scheme. Those are the fastest-moving variables in any grade. Coursework is a different matter, because an investigation or essay near its deadline leaves only cosmetic room, and that is exactly when families start asking for help nobody should give. Supervision bought early is both more useful and entirely safe.

Audit the half nobody is watching

List the components your child is carrying that nobody supervises: the investigation, the exploration, the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay, the timed practice that never happens outside a mock hall. Then ask which of them has a date, an output and somebody checking it. The empty rows on that list are where the grade is being decided, and they are also where an outside hour has the largest effect. Send us the last marked script and we will build the plan around those rows, with a tutor matched to the component rather than to the subject label, delivered one-to-one over live video at a time your training week can actually keep.
