IB Maths Tutor in Al Wahda

Looking for an IB maths tutor in Al Wahda who can name the topic your child is losing marks in? This page is written from the syllabus outwards: the five Diploma topics, the paper weightings for Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, and the five Exploration criteria worth 20 marks. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so an Al Wahda student opens a shared whiteboard at home instead of sitting in Airport Road traffic.

  • Matched by course and level: AA HL, AA SL, AI HL or AI SL
  • Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 practised under real timing
  • Exploration coached against criteria A to E, student's own work
  • Live video lessons on Gulf Standard Time, recorded for revision

IB & IGCSE in Al Wahda

What an IB maths problem actually looks like before you fix it

A parent in Al Wahda usually starts searching after a report card, not before one. The grade is a 4 where it used to be a 6, the teacher comment says the student needs to show more working, and nobody has said which topic is the problem. That is the gap this page is built to close. An IB maths tutor in Al Wahda is only useful if the first session identifies the specific failure: a function transformation misread, a calculator used on a paper that forbids it, a differentiation chain rule applied to the wrong inner term, or an Exploration with no personal engagement and therefore no marks in criterion C.

Diploma Programme Mathematics is examined in two separate courses. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches rewards algebraic fluency, proof and calculus. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation rewards modelling, statistics and the use of technology. Both are offered at Standard Level and Higher Level, and both cover five named topics: Number and algebra, Functions, Geometry and trigonometry, Statistics and probability, and Calculus. The topic titles look identical on a school handbook. The depth inside them is not, and a tutor who treats AI HL as a lighter AA HL will spend months teaching material the student will never be examined on.

The assessment split is where most Al Wahda families find their first real surprise. At Standard Level the grade is two written papers at 40% each plus the Exploration at 20%. At Higher Level it becomes three papers, weighted 30%, 30% and 20%, with the Exploration still at 20%. Paper 3 at HL is the one nobody is ready for: two extended problem-solving questions that run across topics and reward a student who can keep a long argument tidy. It cannot be revised by doing more short questions, which is exactly how most students revise.

Al Wahda sits in central Abu Dhabi, a short drive from Al Mushrif, Al Bateen and the Corniche, and the school intake here is mixed: British curriculum students doing IGCSE at Year 11 and moving into DP1, IB continuum students coming up through the Middle Years Programme, and transfers from CBSE and American systems. Each route arrives at DP maths with a different hole. An IGCSE Extended student has strong algebra and no calculus. An MYP student has investigated patterns for five years and may never have been asked to write a formal proof. A CBSE transfer often has more calculus than the course needs and no experience of a graphical display calculator.

IB Gram delivers all of this as one-to-one online tuition over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. For maths in particular that is a straightforward advantage rather than a compromise. The whiteboard is shared, the graph is plotted live on the same screen both people are looking at, the session is recorded so a student can replay the moment the chain rule was explained, and an Al Wahda family is choosing from specialists by course and level rather than from whoever is willing to drive to Defence Road at five in the afternoon.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Maths tutoring for an Al Wahda student depends on where in the IB continuum the student currently sits. The three programmes below each assess mathematics differently, and the first job of a tutor is to work out which set of rules the student is being judged against this year.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Two courses, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at SL or HL. Content is organised into Number and algebra, Functions, Geometry and trigonometry, Statistics and probability, and Calculus, plus a toolkit strand and the Exploration. Papers are sat in the May session for schools on the northern-hemisphere calendar. Grades run 1 to 7 and feed the 45-point total alongside Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

Al Wahda students are typically entered through their own school, which acts as the examination centre and sets the internal deadline for the Exploration draft. That internal deadline is usually months before the IB upload date, so the useful planning question for a family here is not when the exams are but when the school wants the draft, and ADEK-licensed schools across central Abu Dhabi set that date independently of each other.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to 5

Middle Years Programme Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria, each marked from 0 to 8: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. There is no single terminal paper in the school-assessed route, which means a student can hold a strong MYP 5 grade and still have little practice at the sustained, timed algebra DP1 demands from the first week.

The MYP to DP step is the most common reason an Al Wahda family books maths tuition in DP1 term one. The fix is specific rather than general: standard-form manipulation, surds, the factor and remainder theorems, and the discipline of writing a solution a marker can follow without guessing. Eight to twelve sessions over a term usually closes that gap if it is started in September rather than in February.

PYPAges 3-12

Primary Years Programme Mathematics

Mathematics is taught inside transdisciplinary units rather than as a separate timetabled subject with external papers. Number sense, pattern, measurement and data handling are built through inquiry. Support at this stage is about fluency and confidence with number facts, not examination technique, and it is worth saying plainly that most PYP students do not need a subject tutor at all.

Where an Al Wahda primary family does ask for help, it is usually a Year 5 or 6 student moving into an MYP school and needing arithmetic fluency before the jump. Short, infrequent sessions work better here than a weekly commitment, and a parent should be sceptical of anyone selling a two-year plan to a nine-year-old.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme mathematics support

CP students take DP courses alongside a career-related study, and mathematics appears either as a DP course or as part of the personal and professional skills core. The mathematics demand is usually applied: handling data, interpreting a financial model, reading a statistical claim critically. Tutoring here targets the specific quantitative requirement of the career strand rather than the full DP syllabus.

The Career-related Programme is offered by far fewer schools in Abu Dhabi than the Diploma, so an Al Wahda family asking about it usually has one specific school in mind. Confirm which DP courses that school actually runs inside its CP before booking, because the mathematics component differs between a business-facing strand and an engineering-facing one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The list below is the DP mathematics syllabus broken into the parts an Al Wahda student is actually examined on, with the place marks are most often lost in each. A first session should establish which two or three of these are the live problem rather than working through all of them in order.

Number and algebra

AA and AI, SL and HL

Sequences and series, exponents and logarithms, binomial theorem, and at HL proof by induction, complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form, and systems of equations. Marks go missing in index-law slips under time pressure and in sigma notation misread as a product. AA HL adds partial fractions and the full proof toolkit, which is the single most common HL weakness.

Functions

AA and AI, SL and HL

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, transformations, quadratics, rational and exponential models. The recurring error is applying transformations in the wrong order, because a horizontal shift inside the bracket behaves opposite to intuition. AI leans on fitting a function to data; AA leans on manipulating it exactly.

Geometry and trigonometry

AA and AI, SL and HL

Three-dimensional solids, the sine and cosine rules, radian measure, trigonometric identities and equations. AA HL adds compound-angle identities and vectors, including lines and planes in three dimensions. Students lose marks by leaving a calculator in degrees for a radian question, which invalidates every subsequent line of an otherwise correct solution.

Statistics and probability

AA and AI, SL and HL

Data presentation, correlation and regression, probability rules, binomial and normal distributions. AI HL extends into the chi-squared test, the Poisson distribution and hypothesis testing. The usual failure is a conditional probability treated as independent, and in AI the failure is quoting a regression line without commenting on whether extrapolation is valid.

Calculus

AA and AI, SL and HL

Differentiation and integration, chain, product and quotient rules, kinematics, areas and volumes of revolution. AA HL adds implicit differentiation, Maclaurin series and differential equations; AI treats calculus more lightly and more numerically. Almost all lost calculus marks trace to one of three things: a missing constant of integration, a chain rule with the wrong inner function, or a limit not substituted back.

The Exploration (mathematics IA)

SL and HL, both courses

A 12 to 20 page individual investigation worth 20% of the grade, marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Low marks are usually structural, not mathematical: a topic too broad to finish, mathematics copied rather than owned, and no genuine reflection on whether the result means anything.

Paper 1 technique

AA no calculator, AI with technology

AA Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, so exact-value work with surds, radians and logarithms has to be fluent on paper. AI Paper 1 permits technology throughout and rewards knowing which calculator function to reach for. Practising the wrong paper's habits is a real and common waste of tutoring hours.

Paper 2 technique

SL and HL, both courses

A calculator-permitted paper where method marks are awarded for a written setup even when the final value is wrong. The discipline is to write the equation being solved before solving it on screen. Students who type straight into the calculator and record only the answer forfeit marks they had genuinely earned.

Paper 3 problem solving

HL only, both courses

Two extended response questions worth 20% of the HL grade, running across topics and building from an accessible opening to an unfamiliar final part. It rewards stamina and tidy notation rather than recall. Preparing for it means working whole past questions untimed first, then timed, not drilling short questions faster.

Graphical display calculator skills

SL and HL, both courses

Solving equations numerically, finding intersections, evaluating definite integrals, running regressions and reading distributions. Many transfers from other systems arrive without these skills and lose marks on questions they understand. Two focused sessions on the specific model the school uses generally fixes it for good.

Mathematics for TOK and interdisciplinary work

Core support

Mathematics supplies some of the strongest Theory of Knowledge examples: proof versus evidence, the status of mathematical truth, how statistics can mislead. A maths tutor can help a student turn a syllabus topic into a usable TOK example without touching the essay itself, which must remain the student's own work.

Internal mock and predicted-grade preparation

DP1 and DP2

Abu Dhabi schools run internal mocks that set the predicted grade universities see on an application. That makes a January mock consequential in a way students underestimate. Targeted preparation for a school's own mock paper is a legitimate, time-limited piece of tutoring with a clear finish line.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three delivery patterns cover almost every Al Wahda maths request. All three are live, one-to-one and online; what changes is the frequency, the length and what the student is expected to do between sessions.

Weekly one-to-one by course and level

A fixed sixty or ninety minute slot each week with the same tutor, matched to AA HL, AA SL, AI HL or AI SL specifically. The pattern suits a student whose grade has slipped by one band and who needs consistent reinforcement alongside school teaching. Ninety minutes works better than sixty for HL, because Paper 3 practice does not fit into an hour.

  • Same tutor, same slot, booked on Gulf Standard Time
  • Session recorded so a method can be replayed before homework
  • Short written note after each lesson naming the next target
  • Topic sequence follows the school's scheme of work, not a generic plan

Exploration coaching blocks

A short series of sessions timed around the school's internal draft deadline, focused on the five assessment criteria. The tutor helps a student choose a question narrow enough to finish, checks that the mathematics genuinely sits at course level, and gives feedback on structure and reflection. The student writes every word and does every calculation themselves; that boundary is what keeps the work admissible.

  • Topic selection narrowed to something answerable in 12 to 20 pages
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Checks the mathematics is at the right course level, not above or below
  • No drafting, no editing to completion, no supplied content

Paper-focused intensive before an exam window

A concentrated run of sessions working whole past papers under timed conditions, with the marking done together afterwards. This is the right pattern four to eight weeks before a school mock or the May session, and the wrong pattern in DP1 term one, when the content is not yet covered and timed practice only produces anxiety.

  • Whole papers under exam timing, marked against the official scheme
  • Error log kept by topic so revision targets the real gaps
  • Separate treatment of calculator and non-calculator technique
  • A clear end date, so the block finishes instead of drifting on

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Wahda

01

What an Al Wahda parent is really asking when they search for an IB maths tutor

  • Diagnostic first, package second, in that order
  • Match on course and level, not on the word 'maths'
  • Ask the tutor to explain a Paper 3 question before booking
  • Expect to be told when tutoring should stop

The literal answer first: an IB maths tutor in Al Wahda, through IB Gram, is a Diploma Programme mathematics specialist who teaches your child one-to-one over live video, matched to the exact course and level your child takes, at a time that fits an Abu Dhabi school day. There is no travel, no minimum block of hours to buy before you meet the tutor, and a free trial lesson before any commitment. What there is not, anywhere in the UAE, is a tutor arriving at an address.

Underneath that search sit three unspoken questions. Can anyone tell me which topic is actually wrong? Is the person teaching my child qualified to teach this course rather than mathematics in general? And am I paying a fair rate? The first is answered in a diagnostic first session, not by a sales call. The second is answered by matching on course and level and by asking a tutor to talk through a Paper 3 question before you book them. The third is answered by the rate table further down this page, which quotes the Abu Dhabi market with its sources rather than asking you to guess.

There is a fourth question parents rarely ask out loud, which is whether tutoring is needed at all. Sometimes it is not. A student who is losing marks purely through calculator settings and missing working does not need a year of lessons; they need two sessions and a changed habit. A student in AA HL who cannot complete a proof by induction does need sustained teaching. A tutor who tells you the difference, and who tells you when to stop, is worth more than one who sells you a package in the first conversation.

Finally, the geography. Al Wahda is central, well served by schools and close to everything, and none of that helps when the specialism you need is AI HL statistics and nobody within a twenty-minute drive teaches it. That is the honest case for online delivery on this page: not that it is cheaper, though it usually is, but that it widens the pool from the people who can reach Hazza Bin Zayed Street to the people who actually teach the course.

02

AA or AI: the course choice that decides two years of maths

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are not a harder and an easier version of the same course. They examine different things. AA is built on algebraic manipulation, functions, proof and calculus, and its Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. AI is built on modelling, data and the intelligent use of technology, and permits a calculator in every paper. A student who thinks in structures and enjoys exactness usually does better in AA. A student who wants to know what the number means usually does better in AI.

The choice is often made in DP1 selection week on incomplete information, and it is hard to reverse later because the content diverges quickly. By the end of DP1, an AA HL student has met implicit differentiation and complex numbers; an AI HL student has met chi-squared testing and the Poisson distribution. A tutor brought in during DP2 cannot undo that divergence, which is why the useful intervention is a single honest conversation in Year 11 rather than remedial work in Year 13.

University requirements complicate the decision and should be checked at source, not inferred. Engineering, physics, mathematics and most economics degrees commonly ask for AA at Higher Level, and some ask for a specific grade within it. Programmes in design, psychology, business and many health-science routes accept AI. Requirements vary between institutions and between years, so an Al Wahda family should read the entry requirements on the university's own admissions page for the intake year the student is applying to, and treat any blanket claim on a tutoring site as a starting point only.

There is a third route that gets overlooked: taking the course at Standard Level and getting a 7, rather than taking Higher Level and getting a 4. For a student whose target degree accepts SL maths, the SL route protects the overall 45-point total and frees hours for the subjects the offer actually depends on. A tutor whose first instinct is to push a student up a level is not acting in the student's interest.

The papers, the weightings and the places marks go missing

Knowing the weighting changes how a student revises. If Paper 3 carries 20% of an HL grade and a student has never completed one, no amount of extra topic revision reaches that fifth of the grade. If the Exploration carries another 20% and the draft is late, 40% of the final result is sitting unattended while the student drills past-paper algebra. The first job of a tutor in DP2 is to put the weightings on the table and build a revision plan that spends time in proportion to marks.

The failure modes repeat with enough regularity that they can be listed. On AA Paper 1, students reach for a calculator habit they cannot use and lose exact-value marks. On Paper 2, they type into the calculator without writing the equation they are solving, and forfeit method marks on a question they understood. On Paper 3, they abandon a question after part b rather than attempting the later parts, which are frequently worth more than the parts they completed. In the Exploration, they write a report about mathematics instead of doing mathematics.

Marking the work together is the part most tutoring skips. A student who marks their own paper against the official scheme learns what a marker rewards, which is almost never what the student assumed. Method marks survive a wrong answer. A correct answer with no working can still lose marks. Units and degrees of accuracy carry marks of their own. These are not insights about mathematics; they are insights about the examination, and they are reliably worth a grade band to a student who has never been shown them.

The practical pattern that works for an Al Wahda student is unglamorous. Work one past paper a week from the start of DP2. Mark it against the official scheme. Keep an error log by topic. Spend the next session on whichever topic the log names rather than on whichever topic feels worst. After six weeks the log, not the student's instinct, sets the agenda, and the hours bought start landing where the marks are.

The Exploration, criterion by criterion, and the line a tutor must not cross

The mathematics Exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Presentation and mathematical communication carry four marks each, personal engagement and reflection three each, and use of mathematics six. The distribution is the thing students miss. Half the available marks sit in how the work is framed, communicated and reflected upon, not in how hard the mathematics is. A student can produce impressive mathematics and score poorly.

Presentation rewards a report with a clear aim, a logical order and a conclusion that answers the question it set. Mathematical communication rewards correct notation, defined variables, labelled graphs and consistent terminology. Personal engagement rewards evidence that the student made this investigation their own rather than following a template. Reflection rewards thinking about limitations, about whether the result is meaningful, about what would be done differently. Use of mathematics rewards work that is at the level of the course, correct, and genuinely understood.

That last criterion carries the trap. Mathematics far above course level, lifted from a source the student does not understand, scores badly because understanding cannot be demonstrated. Mathematics well below course level also scores badly. The target is the course's own level, applied thoroughly. An AA SL student who performs careful calculus on a question they chose and understood will outscore one who copies an undergraduate proof.

The boundary for a tutor is set by IB academic honesty rules and it is not negotiable. A tutor may discuss topic choice, check that the mathematics sits at course level, explain a technique the student then applies, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write any part of it, supply calculations, restructure the text, or edit it to completion. The student's work must be their own, and the supervisor signs to that effect. Any service offering to produce an Exploration is exposing the student to a malpractice finding, which can cost the whole Diploma.

What IB maths tuition costs around Al Wahda, and what the travel premium actually buys

Start with the monthly figure rather than the hourly one, because that is the number a household budget actually feels. One sixty-minute session a week for a month is roughly four hours. At the published market bands that lands between AED 600 and AED 1,200 a month for a qualified subject tutor working online, and between AED 1,000 and AED 2,000 or more for an exam-year specialist, on Bestimate's 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions. Monthly packages advertised in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

The hourly bands behind those monthly figures are worth seeing split by format. Budget online tuition, often delivered by university students, is advertised from AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online runs AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An in-home one-to-one visit, travel included, runs AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors AED 200 to 500. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists run AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Premium named or examiner-led tuition reaches AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

Set those two columns side by side and the travel premium becomes visible: roughly AED 30 to 200 an hour, depending on tier, for the tutor's journey. For a family in central Al Wahda that premium buys a shorter trip than it would for a family in Al Reef or Al Samha, but it still buys travel rather than teaching. Over a two-year Diploma at one session a week it is a material sum, and it is the one line of a tutoring budget that produces no mathematics at all.

Two honest cautions about all of these figures. First, they are market rates read from competitor and comparison sites in October 2026, not IB Gram prices; our own fee is quoted after a free trial lesson, when the course, level and session length are known. Second, a high rate is not evidence of a good match for your child's course. An examiner-led rate for a student whose actual problem is calculator settings in radians is money spent on the wrong diagnosis, and the cheapest effective intervention is usually the right one.

Online one-to-one against an in-home maths tutor in central Abu Dhabi

This comparison deserves to be made properly rather than waved away, because in-home tuition has real advantages and an Al Wahda family should know what they are choosing between. A tutor in the room can see a student's page, notice a disengaged posture, and hold attention with a younger child in a way a screen makes harder. For a seven-year-old, that matters. For a Diploma student working on Paper 3, it matters considerably less than whether the tutor has taught AA HL before.

Against that, in-home tuition in Abu Dhabi carries four costs that are easy to underestimate. The travel premium is priced into the rate. The session is bounded by the traffic on Airport Road and Hazza Bin Zayed Street, so a 4.30pm slot can become a 5.05pm start. The tutor pool shrinks to people willing to drive to your address, which for a niche course is often a pool of nobody. And a cancelled session is harder to replace at short notice when the replacement also has to travel.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. In-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise in order to match a search phrase. What we do run is live one-to-one video tuition into Al Wahda, with the tutor matched to AA or AI at the student's level, the whiteboard shared, graphs plotted on the screen both people are reading, and the session recorded so the method can be replayed before homework. For mathematics specifically, a shared screen is closer to a tutor's own notebook than a kitchen table is.

One practical note for families comparing the two. If you do hire an independent in-home tutor in Abu Dhabi, ask to see their MoHRE private tuition work permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals offering private tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. A permit is free, so there is no cost reason for a tutor not to hold one.

The Abu Dhabi school year counted backwards from the maths papers

Working forwards from today produces vague plans. Working backwards from the papers produces a schedule. For a DP2 student in Al Wahda the fixed points are the school's internal Exploration deadline, the school mock window that sets the predicted grade, the IB's own submission dates handled by the coordinator, and the May examination session. Only one of those is set by the IB alone, and the two that bite soonest are both set by the school.

Because IB session and results dates are published by the IB and revised from time to time, this page does not print them. Ask your school's Diploma coordinator for the current internal deadlines and confirm the session dates against the IB's own assessment pages. That is not evasion; it is the difference between a page that stays correct and a page that tells an Abu Dhabi parent a wrong date they then plan around.

For IGCSE siblings in the same household, the Cambridge position is firmer and worth stating. Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series. The February and March series is offered to India only, so a student in Abu Dhabi sits June, with November available as the resit route. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November; the November 2026 final timetable ran to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

Ramadan falls inside the UAE academic year and shifts earlier each year, which affects when revision actually happens. School hours shorten, energy drops in the late afternoon, and sessions move to post-Iftar slots. A revision plan built in September that ignores Ramadan collapses in practice. Build the heavy content work before it, keep the Ramadan weeks for lighter consolidation and past-paper marking, and resume full intensity afterwards.

ADEK, the permit and the questions worth asking before you pay anyone

  • Ask any independent tutor for their MoHRE private tuition work permit; it is free to hold
  • Read the school's inspection rating on ADEK's site, not on a tutoring page
  • Treat 'regulator-approved tutors' as a warning sign rather than a credential
  • Do not engage your child's own classroom teacher as a paid private tutor

Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes its own inspection ratings. Dubai's equivalent is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority; Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge; and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. An Al Wahda family dealing with a school issue deals with ADEK, and the inspection rating on ADEK's own site is the one worth reading.

A tutoring platform is a different legal animal from a school, and no tutoring company should describe itself in regulator language it has not earned. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or Cambridge, and holds no partnership with any of them. We name them because understanding them helps a parent; a page that implies endorsement is telling you something untrue about itself.

For individual tutors the relevant rule is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered at government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

There is one Abu Dhabi-specific rule worth knowing. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff are reported to prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct is reported to bar serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. The practical consequence is simple: do not arrange for your child to be privately tutored by their own classroom teacher, however convenient it looks.

When no AA HL or AI HL specialist is free, and what we do about it

Most tutoring pages imply infinite availability. The truth is that Diploma mathematics at Higher Level is a narrow specialism, Abu Dhabi is a smaller market than Dubai, and there are weeks in an exam term when the right tutor for a particular course is fully booked. Saying so is more useful than discovering it after a payment.

What we do in that case is tell you, give an expected wait, and offer the alternatives explicitly. Those are: a different qualified tutor on the same course at a different time slot, a tutor based outside the UAE who teaches the same IB course and works to Gulf Standard Time, a shorter session at higher frequency while the preferred slot clears, or a recommendation to wait. The last one is a real option and sometimes the right one, particularly in DP1 when nothing is urgent yet.

Where a tutor is based outside the UAE, you are told before you book, not afterwards. Several competitor sites route UAE parents to a non-UAE phone number without mentioning it, which is a trust failure rather than a logistical detail. The IB syllabus is identical wherever the tutor sits; what changes is the time zone, and that is a scheduling question with a clear answer rather than something to conceal.

The free trial lesson exists for this reason. It is one full lesson with the matched tutor, no card required, and its purpose is a diagnosis you can act on: which topics are weak, whether the course and level are right, whether the Exploration is on track, and whether this particular tutor and this particular student can work together. If the answer to that last question is no, we change the tutor. If the answer is that your child needs two sessions rather than twenty, you should hear that too.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Wahda

Al Wahda is central, which means a tutor matched to an Al Wahda student is also matched to families a few minutes away in every direction. The notes below are about distance, school intake and session timing rather than property, because those are the three things that change what a weekly maths lesson can realistically look like.

Al Wahda

Central island location around Hazza Bin Zayed Street and Al Wahda Mall. Dense, apartment-led and close to several ADEK-licensed private schools, so a 4pm start is feasible on most weekdays even when a school bus arrives late.

Al Mushrif

Immediately inland from Al Wahda and home to several long-established private schools. Families here often hold places at schools on both the British and IB routes, so a maths tutor is frequently asked to cover IGCSE and DP material for two children in the same household.

Al Bateen

West of Al Wahda towards the marina and the airport road. Villa communities with longer school runs, which pushes the first realistic session slot towards 5pm and makes an online lesson that starts on time more valuable than one that starts whenever the car arrives.

The Corniche

Northern waterfront strip, a ten-minute drive from Al Wahda outside peak hours. Students here often attend schools further inland, and the late-afternoon return along the Corniche is slow enough that evening sessions after 6pm are common.

Al Reem Island

Across the Al Maqta channel and growing quickly, with newer schools and a younger intake. The bridge traffic is the operative fact: an in-home tutor crossing to Al Reem in the evening is charging for the crossing, which is precisely the cost an online session removes.

Al Nahyan

Adjacent to Al Wahda and sharing the same school catchments. A useful comparison point for a parent judging a quoted rate, because tutors quoting for Al Nahyan and Al Wahda should not differ in price, and a difference usually means travel is being priced in.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural district with premium international schools and a longer commute from the city centre. Diploma cohorts here are large enough that a student can usually find a classmate taking the same course at the same level, which makes shared revision practical.

Khalifa City

Mainland suburb towards the airport with a substantial school cluster. School days end earlier than island schools in several cases, so a Khalifa City student often has a 3.30pm slot available that an Al Wahda student does not.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Wahda

Central Abu Dhabi island: Al Wahda, Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

The schools closest to Al Wahda run a mix of British and IB routes, which is why a maths tutor working in this catchment needs to be fluent in both IGCSE and DP assessment rather than one of them. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; ADEK publishes the licensed list and its own inspection ratings, and a parent should read the current rating on ADEK's site rather than on any tutoring page.

Island and near-mainland IB and British schools

Diploma Programme places in Abu Dhabi are concentrated in a relatively small number of schools, several of them outside the city centre. That concentration matters for an Al Wahda family: your child may be one of a handful taking AA HL in the year group, and a tutor who specialises in that exact course is unlikely to live within driving distance.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the course, the level and the problem

Not just 'maths'. AA or AI, SL or HL, the school, the year group, and what went wrong in the last assessment. A photograph of a marked paper is worth more than a paragraph of description, because the marker's annotations usually name the real issue faster than anyone else can.

  2. 02

We match on course and level, not availability

An AA HL student is matched to a tutor who has taught AA HL and can talk through a Paper 3 question. If the right specialist is not free this week, you are told the wait rather than offered a near-enough alternative without being asked.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, used as a diagnosis

One full lesson, no card required, no block of hours bought in advance. The tutor works through recent material to locate the actual gap and tells you plainly what they found, including the case where very little tutoring is needed.

  4. 04

    A plan with weightings attached

A short written plan that allocates time in proportion to marks: papers, the Exploration, calculator technique, the error log. Where the student's school deadlines are known, the plan is built backwards from those rather than from a generic twelve-week template.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions, written notes, and a review point

Each lesson ends with a one-line target for the week, and the recording stays available. Every six to eight weeks the plan is reviewed against the error log, and if the log says the problem has gone, the honest recommendation is to reduce or stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by course, not by subject

AA and AI diverge within one term of DP1. Matching a student to a tutor who teaches their exact course and level is the single decision that most affects whether the hours produce marks, and it is the decision a local-radius search cannot make for you.

The Exploration treated as 20% of the grade

A fifth of the final mathematics grade sits in a document most students leave until it is nearly too late. Coaching it against criteria A to E, on the student's own draft and nothing else, is a high-return use of a small number of sessions.

Rates quoted with their sources

Every AED figure on this page is a market band read from a named published source in October 2026, not an IB Gram price and not an invention. Our own fee is quoted after the trial lesson, when the course, level and session length are known.

Academic honesty stated, not implied

A tutor teaches, explains and gives feedback on work the student wrote. No part of an Exploration, Extended Essay or TOK essay is produced for a student here. Services that sell completed coursework expose the student to a malpractice finding that can cost the entire Diploma.

Availability disclosed before you pay

If no AA HL or AI HL specialist is free, you hear that, with an expected wait and the alternatives written down. Where a tutor is based outside the UAE, you are told before booking rather than after.

Built for the Abu Dhabi school day

Sessions are booked on Gulf Standard Time around an Al Wahda school run, and the plan is built backwards from your school's own mock and draft deadlines rather than from a generic calendar that ignores Ramadan.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Wahda: your questions answered

Which IB maths course does my child in Al Wahda actually take, AA or AI?+

Check the school report or the DP course selection form; it will say Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, then Standard Level or Higher Level. The distinction matters more than the level. AA examines algebra, proof and calculus with a no-calculator Paper 1. AI examines modelling, data and statistics with technology permitted throughout. A tutor matched to the wrong course will teach material your child is not examined on. If the paperwork is ambiguous, ask the maths teacher directly, and ask which graphical display calculator model the department uses while you are there.

How many of the 20 Exploration marks are for mathematics itself?+

Twenty per cent, at both Standard and Higher Level, in both AA and AI. It is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation and mathematical communication at four marks each, personal engagement and reflection at three each, and use of mathematics at six. That means more than half the marks sit in framing, communication and reflection rather than in mathematical difficulty. Students routinely leave it late and then lose marks that had nothing to do with their mathematics, which is why a short coaching block timed to the school's internal draft deadline is usually the highest-value tutoring a DP student buys.

Where exactly is the line between coaching an Exploration and doing it?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can discuss topic choice, check the mathematics sits at the course's own level, teach a technique the student then applies, and give criterion-by-criterion feedback on a draft the student wrote themselves. A tutor cannot write any part of it, supply the calculations, restructure the text or edit it to completion. The student's work has to be their own and the school supervisor signs to that effect. Any service offering to produce an Exploration is creating a malpractice risk that can cost your child the whole Diploma.

What is IB maths Paper 3 and why does my child find it so different?+

Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level and carries 20% of the grade. It is two extended problem-solving questions that run across syllabus topics, starting accessibly and building into unfamiliar territory. It rewards stamina, tidy notation and a willingness to keep going when a part looks strange, rather than quick recall. Students who revise by doing many short questions faster get no better at it. The method that works is completing whole past Paper 3 questions untimed first, then under timing, and marking them against the official scheme to see where method marks were available.

Does an Al Wahda student lose anything by having maths lessons online instead of at home?+

For Diploma mathematics, very little, and some things improve. A shared whiteboard with live graphing is closer to how a mathematician works than paper on a kitchen table, the session is recorded so a method can be replayed before homework, and the lesson starts at the minute it was booked rather than when the traffic allows. What you give up is a person in the room, which matters more for a young child than for a DP2 student. What you gain is a tutor chosen for teaching AA HL or AI HL rather than for living nearby.

What does an IB maths tutor cost per hour around central Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates read in October 2026 put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate estimating AED 200 to 450 plus. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 with travel included. Budget online options start lower, from AED 45 to 150. These are market figures from named sources, not IB Gram prices; our fee is quoted after a free trial lesson when the course and session length are known.

My child is in DP2 with the exams a few months away. Is it too late for maths tutoring?+

No, but the plan has to change. With a short runway the work is triage rather than coverage: identify the two or three topics carrying the most recoverable marks, fix calculator and working-out habits that are costing method marks across every paper, and make sure the Exploration is finished and submitted rather than hanging over the revision. Attempting to re-teach a two-year syllabus in eight weeks produces anxiety and little else. A tutor who proposes that, rather than triage, has misread the situation.

How many maths sessions a week does a DP student in Al Wahda usually need?+

One is the normal starting point, sixty minutes at Standard Level and ninety at Higher Level, because Paper 3 practice does not fit into an hour. Two a week makes sense in a mock or exam term, or where a student is carrying a gap from an earlier year as well as the current content. More than two is rarely productive: mathematics improves through the work a student does between lessons, and a schedule that leaves no time for that work removes the thing that actually moves the grade.

Should my child take Higher Level maths if the target degree only asks for Standard Level?+

Often not. A 7 at Standard Level protects the overall 45-point total and frees hours for the subjects the university offer genuinely depends on; a 4 at Higher Level helps nobody. Engineering, mathematics, physics and many economics courses do commonly ask for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, sometimes with a minimum grade, so the honest answer depends on the named degree at the named university for the intake year being applied to. Read that university's own admissions page rather than any tutoring site, including this one.

Is my child's Al Wahda maths tutor legally permitted to teach privately here?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and MoHRE issues a private tuition work permit free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Ask any independent tutor to show you theirs; it costs nothing to hold, so there is no innocent reason not to have one. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published.

Which maths topics do Abu Dhabi DP students lose the most marks in?+

Four recur. Calculus, where a missing constant of integration or a chain rule applied to the wrong inner function undoes an otherwise correct solution. Trigonometry, where a calculator left in degrees for a radian question invalidates everything after it. Function transformations, applied in the wrong order because horizontal shifts behave opposite to intuition. And conditional probability treated as independent. None of these are conceptual failures; they are habits, which is why they respond quickly to targeted work and an error log kept by topic.

My child moved from MYP maths into DP1 and is struggling. What usually fixes it?+

The MYP to DP step is predictable and so is the remedy. MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria including investigating patterns, and a student can hold a strong MYP 5 grade with little experience of sustained timed algebra or formal proof. The gap is usually surds, index laws, standard form, the factor and remainder theorems, and the habit of writing a solution a marker can follow without guessing. Eight to twelve sessions across DP1 term one normally closes it, which is far cheaper than discovering the same gap in DP2.

Can the same tutor help my older child with IB maths and a younger one with IGCSE maths?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. Many tutors teach both, and a household booking two subjects back to back saves scheduling effort. But the two courses are examined differently: IGCSE Mathematics is tiered and terminal, while DP mathematics carries a 20% Exploration and, at Higher Level, a Paper 3. If either child's need is specialised, two matched specialists beat one tutor covering both. Ask the tutor which syllabus codes and which course levels they have actually taught before deciding.

What happens if no AA HL or AI HL specialist is available when we ask?+

You are told, with an expected wait and the options in writing. Those options are a different qualified tutor on the same course in a different slot, a tutor based outside the UAE teaching the same IB course on Gulf Standard Time, shorter and more frequent sessions until the preferred slot clears, or waiting. Higher Level mathematics is a narrow specialism and Abu Dhabi is a smaller market than Dubai, so availability genuinely tightens before mock windows. Where a tutor sits outside the UAE, you hear that before booking rather than afterwards.

Will lessons work around Ramadan and the Abu Dhabi school calendar?+

Yes, and the plan should be built with that in mind from the start rather than patched later. Ramadan falls inside the UAE academic year and moves earlier each year; school hours shorten and late-afternoon concentration drops, so sessions commonly move to post-Iftar slots. A workable pattern puts heavy new content before Ramadan, uses the Ramadan weeks for lighter consolidation and past-paper marking, and resumes full intensity afterwards. Sessions are booked on Gulf Standard Time around your own school's timings, including the earlier finishes some Abu Dhabi schools run.

Start with a diagnosis, not a package

If you are looking for an IB maths tutor in Al Wahda, the first useful step is finding out exactly which topic is costing marks and whether the course and level are right. Tell us the course, the level, the school and what the last marked paper said, and we will match a Diploma mathematics specialist by course rather than by postcode. The first lesson is free and is used as a diagnosis you can act on, including the case where the honest answer is that a habit needs changing rather than a year of tutoring booked. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the whiteboard shared and the session recorded.
