IB IGCSE Tutor for American Community School Abu Dhabi Students in Abu Dhabi

An IB IGCSE tutor for American Community School Abu Dhabi students, taught one-to-one over live video and priced in AED. This page is built around a single test: which claims about a tutor can a parent actually check? The rate, the permit, the specification, the school inspection and the equivalency rule are all verifiable from primary sources in Abu Dhabi, and every one of them is linked to the authority that publishes it.

Four claims a tutoring provider makes, and how a parent checks each one

Almost everything an agency says about itself is unverifiable by design. A satisfaction percentage with no sample size, a star rating with no countable reviews, a claim of regulatory approval that no regulator would confirm: competitor pages measured for this project in October 2026 carried all three, and one showed two different review totals on the same page. This page therefore takes the opposite approach and sticks to claims a parent in Abu Dhabi can check against a primary source within about fifteen minutes.

There are four worth checking before paying anyone. First, the rate. Market rates are published by several providers, so a quote can be tested against them: online entry tutors run roughly AED 33 to 150, with Tutopiya advertising from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; a qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; a named-course specialist sits at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishing AED 270; and AED 650 is the highest published figure found in this market, from BartyED. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 once travel is inside the fee.

Second, the permit. An individual giving private lessons in the UAE needs a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. The ministry's own service page for it lists no fee and a two working day completion time. A parent can ask a tutor directly whether they hold one, and can read the eligibility rules themselves rather than taking anyone's word on them.

Third, the school. Abu Dhabi's private schools are licensed and inspected by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes its outcomes. Read the inspection on ADEK's own site and nowhere else, because aggregated ratings go stale and the band vocabulary differs between emirates. Across the competitor pages measured for this project, ADEK was named by nobody at all, which tells you how much local checking went into them.

Fourth, the equivalency rule, which matters more at an American-curriculum school than anywhere else and is set out in its own section below. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and names no school on this page as a client or partner. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, since home visits are a service offered only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An American-curriculum school running the IB Diploma alongside its own diploma gives a family two genuinely different post-16 routes and one earlier decision point. These four blocks set out what each stage assesses and what that means in this emirate.

ELEMAges 5-11 · Grades 1-5

Elementary school

Standards-based reporting rather than percentage marks, which makes specific gaps hard for a parent to see. The skills that matter later are number fluency, reading stamina and the ability to produce a structured paragraph without a template. A standards report can show consistent attainment while one of those three is quietly missing, and it usually shows up two years later as a middle-school writing problem.

In Abu Dhabi these years also carry the mandatory UAE subjects, which run in private schools alongside the licensed curriculum under the federal requirement overseen by the Ministry of Education. Arabic is normally the first subject where the report carries a conventional grade, and in expatriate households on the island it is frequently the only one a parent cannot help with at the kitchen table.

MSAges 11-14 · Grades 6-8

Middle school

Grade point averages begin to accumulate here in most American-curriculum schools, which changes the purpose of tutoring: a weak semester is now a permanent entry on a transcript rather than a bad term. Algebra readiness is the single highest-leverage thing to fix in these years, because it carries both the high-school maths sequence and the quantitative science courses that follow it.

Middle school is also where an Abu Dhabi family starts weighing the two post-16 routes, and the earlier decision is whether to stay in the American sequence or move towards a British-curriculum school for IGCSEs. That second route brings its own equivalency rule, counting five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no lower than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education.

HSAges 14-18 · Grades 9-12

High school and Advanced Placement

Course grades build a transcript and a grade point average, and Advanced Placement courses sit on top as externally examined single subjects scored one to five. The structure is modular in a way the IB Diploma is not: a student can take one Advanced Placement course or six, and can drop one without affecting the diploma. That flexibility is the main argument for the route and also its main risk, since nothing forces breadth.

The American track for Ministry of Education equivalency has published thresholds that catch families out. English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the academic IELTS, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those are specific numbers with a specific source, and they are worth knowing in Grade 10 rather than Grade 12.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity-Activity-Service. Unlike the Advanced Placement route it is all or nothing: the Diploma is awarded on the whole package, so a collapse in one subject has consequences across it. Internal assessment runs in every subject, and five of those deadlines plus a four-thousand-word Extended Essay land inside one stretch of the second year. UAE candidates sit the May session.

No IB points threshold for Ministry of Education equivalency appears on this page, because none could be verified against the Ministry's own publication, and repeating an unverified figure across hundreds of pages would be a liability rather than a service. A Diploma family should confirm the current requirement with the Ministry or the emirate's attestation authority before planning around any number they read anywhere, including here.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The courses Al Bateen and island families most often ask about, across both post-16 routes. What moves the rate is the level and the proximity to an external assessment, not the subject label.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

DP HL and SL

Algebraic fluency carries the course, and students arriving from an American sequence often find the non-calculator demands unfamiliar rather than hard. The commonest avoidable loss is a correct method never written down, because the mark scheme credits the working and the student recorded only the answer. Higher Level adds proof and complex numbers.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

DP HL and SL

Modelling and statistics led, with the graphic display calculator assumed throughout. Students lose marks reporting a calculator output without naming the command that produced it, and treating a regression line as an answer rather than a model with limits. The internal assessment rewards data the student actually collected and can defend.

Chemistry

DP HL and SL · AP Chemistry

Energetics and organic mechanisms separate grades at Higher Level. Students moving from an American course often have stronger stoichiometry and weaker mechanism reasoning than the Diploma expects. Data-based questions reward reading axis labels before the question stem, which under time pressure almost nobody does.

Physics

DP HL and SL · AP Physics

Definitions carry marks that calculations cannot recover. A student who cannot state what a field is in one sentence loses the explanation marks that follow it. Electromagnetic induction and circuit analysis produce the heaviest losses at both levels, and drawing the circuit before writing anything is the reliable correction.

Biology

DP HL and SL · AP Biology

Content volume makes it feel like a memory test and students revise it as one. The marks live in command terms: outline, explain, evaluate and discuss each want a different answer shape, and a well-learned paragraph scores two of five when the verb asked for a comparison. Internal assessment statistics is a routine weak spot.

English A: Language and Literature

DP HL and SL

Paper 1 is an unseen guided analysis won in the reading rather than the writing. The Individual Oral usually fails on the global issue, not on the texts, because students choose something too broad to evidence in ten minutes. Higher Level adds an essay that needs a sustained argument rather than a tour of the text.

Economics

DP HL and SL · AP Economics

Diagrams are marks, and candidates drawing from memory rather than from the question routinely shift the wrong curve. Higher Level Paper 3 is quantitative and is the clearest separator between a five and a seven. The Advanced Placement equivalent rewards short precise definitions in a way the Diploma does not.

History

DP HL and SL · AP World History

Source work is the examinable skill, not the narrative. Students lose marks describing what a source says instead of assessing its value and limitations. The Diploma internal assessment is a historical investigation with its own structure, and a research question that is too wide caps the mark before any writing happens.

Mathematics (IGCSE 0580 / 4MA1)

IGCSE Core, Extended, Higher

Relevant where a sibling or a transfer places a student on a British-curriculum track. Extended opens A* to E and Core caps at C, a ceiling set by the school at entry. Pearson 4MA1 covers similar ground with a different paper split and its own formula-sheet conventions, so past-paper practice must match the board entered.

Arabic as an additional language

MoE mandatory stream

Required in UAE private schools alongside the licensed curriculum. Dubai's regulator publishes the most detailed guidance and requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ between streams. The non-Arab stream is the one usually tutored in expatriate households and has its own realistic ceiling.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of arrangement, each suited to a different part of an American-curriculum or Diploma year. The choice is set by the assessment coming next rather than by preference.

Semester-long weekly session

One fixed session a week across a semester, which matches the American-curriculum reporting cycle rather than a British term structure. Because a semester grade lands on a transcript permanently, the value of steady support here is higher than the equivalent at a British-curriculum school, where a weak term is recoverable. The session runs alongside the course, not ahead of it.

  • Same tutor and slot across a whole semester
  • Aimed at the semester grade, not just the next test
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next
  • Lowest cost per mark gained of the three shapes

External assessment block

A compressed run of sessions before an Advanced Placement examination, an SAT sitting or an IB May session, built on timed questions and marked work. Content teaching stops; the hour becomes technique, command terms and the recurring losses. Availability tightens sharply in the spring for all three, because the windows overlap, so this is the block that most rewards early booking.

  • Two or three sessions a week for a fixed number of weeks
  • Every session anchored to a marked timed paper
  • Advanced Placement, SAT and IB windows overlap in the spring
  • Specialist availability closes earliest for this block

Internal assessment and research supervision support

Scheduled sessions through an IB internal assessment, Extended Essay or an extended research piece, working only on what the student has written. The tutor maps the draft against the published criteria and names the criterion costing marks. The tutor does not contribute text, redraft into a final version or supply data, and that boundary is stated before the first session.

  • Research question narrowed before any writing begins
  • Criterion-level feedback on the student's own draft
  • Supervisor meetings prepared for rather than replaced
  • Written feedback the student can take to their supervisor
Verified tutors

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors here are matched to a named course and assessment rather than to a grade level, which matters at a school running an American diploma alongside the IB Diploma. A request naming an Advanced Placement course or an IB subject and level reaches someone who has taught that specific assessment.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What you can actually verify about a tutoring quote in Abu Dhabi

Verification is the whole point of this section, because the alternative is trust in claims nobody can test. The competitor corpus measured for this project is full of them: one page shows a rating of 4.92 out of 5 from 480 reviews and 4.93 from 850 reviews on the same page; another shows 5.0 from 20 reviews next to a claim of 2,500 students. Both are structured-data violations and, as commercial representations in the UAE, consumer-protection exposures. Neither is checkable.

What is checkable, from a primary source, in roughly fifteen minutes: the market rate band, the tutor's permit obligation, the school's regulator and inspection, the examination board's own timetable and specification, and the Ministry of Education's published equivalency requirements. That is five things, and they cover most of what actually matters in a tutoring decision. The table sets each one against the authority that publishes it.

The practical use of this is in an initial conversation. Ask a provider what their rate is, which band that puts them in, whether their tutors hold the MoHRE permit, which specification or course code they teach, and which authority inspects the school they claim to support. A provider who can answer all five without hesitation is operating in a different way from one who answers with a satisfaction percentage. That is a better signal than any rating. None of those five questions is rude, and a provider who treats them as rude has answered the most important one already.

02

The AED bands, and the four questions that test a quote

A rate on its own is not information. A rate with a band, a format and a date attached is. The Abu Dhabi market splits into roughly four bands online, and the useful move for a parent is to work out which band a quote belongs to and then ask whether the service matches it. A quote at the specialist rate that cannot name a course-specific recurring loss is mispriced, and a quote at the entry rate for Higher Level work is mismatched in the other direction.

The four questions that test any quote are simple. Which band does this sit in, against the published market figures? Is it per hour or per session, and how long is the session? Does the figure include any written feedback, marking or reporting between sessions, or is that extra? And what happens to the rate in exam term, when demand is at its peak and availability at its lowest? A provider who answers all four plainly is one you can budget against.

The table lists the bands with their sources and what each one should include at that price. Every figure belongs to the provider or survey named and none of them is an IB Gram quotation; IB Gram's own commercial terms are set in a consultation after the free trial lesson rather than published as a rate card. The in-home row appears because it is the comparison families make, not because it is on offer: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE.

Two routes out of Grade 10, and what each one asks of a student

A school offering both an American diploma with Advanced Placement courses and the IB Diploma presents a genuine choice at the end of Grade 10, and it is a choice about the student's working style as much as their ability. The routes are not harder and easier versions of each other. They are structurally different, and a student who thrives in one can struggle badly in the other for reasons that have nothing to do with intelligence.

The Advanced Placement route is modular. A student takes courses individually, each externally examined and scored one to five, and can take one or six. A weak result in one does not threaten the others. The diploma itself comes from the school's own transcript and grade point average, so consistency across semesters matters more than performance in a single examination window. This suits students who work steadily and prefer depth in chosen subjects to enforced breadth.

The IB Diploma is a single package. Six subjects, three at Higher Level, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity-Activity-Service, awarded as a whole. Breadth is compulsory, internal assessment runs in every subject, and five internal deadlines plus a four-thousand-word essay converge inside one stretch of the second year. It suits students who are organised and broad, and it punishes poor time management more severely than weak content. The table sets the two side by side on the dimensions that actually decide which fits, and the last row is the one worth reading first, because it says where the tutoring money tends to go on each route.

Ministry of Education equivalency on the American track

Equivalency is the process that converts a foreign school certificate into something the UAE system recognises, and it is where an American-curriculum family meets specific numbers for the first time. The published requirements for the American track are concrete. English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the academic IELTS test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying.

Those are the thresholds, and two things follow from them. The first is timing: an SAT Math score of 450 is not a demanding target for a student who has taken the test seriously once, but it has to exist before an application, which makes Grade 11 the right time to deal with it rather than Grade 12. The second is that this is a test-preparation problem rather than a course-content problem, and it is a different tutoring purchase from subject support.

The British track is included in the table for the common case of a family with children on both routes. It requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no lower than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that five, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. For the IB there is a deliberate gap: no points threshold is published here because none could be verified against the Ministry's own site. Equivalency is also not something a tutoring provider performs, guarantees or accelerates, and it is not a reason to buy tutoring.

Online delivery and the Al Bateen commute, costed honestly

An in-home rate in Abu Dhabi contains a journey. A tutor reaching Al Bateen at five in the afternoon spends a meaningful part of their evening on the corniche roads, and that is why the local in-home band reaches AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to 450 online. The difference is not quality. It is distance, and it is paid for whether or not the invoice itemises it.

There is a reliability cost on top. A session dependent on a journey fails for reasons unconnected to teaching, and families with travelling tutors commonly lose two or three sessions across a twenty-eight-session term to traffic, weather or an overrun. In the spring, when Advanced Placement examinations, SAT sittings and an IB May session overlap, those are the least replaceable hours in the year, which makes the proportional loss worse than it looks.

The decisive cost, though, is choice. Travel restricts the tutor pool to whoever drives to this part of the island at that hour. For a specific Advanced Placement course, for Higher Level Physics or for Economics Paper 3, that radius may contain nobody with the right experience at all. Online delivery is not offered here as a convenience; it is offered because a national pool contains the specialist and a twenty-minute driving radius in one emirate does not. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India.

06

Transcripts, grade point averages and why the tutoring target differs

  • Transcript and grade point average accumulate; a weak semester is permanent
  • A standing weekly session is worth more here than a pre-exam crash block
  • Advanced Placement examinations behave like external papers and reward short blocks
  • The two purchases are different and are best budgeted separately

An American-curriculum school and a British-curriculum school measure success differently, and that changes what tutoring is for. In a British system the terminal examination is almost everything, so a weak term is recoverable and tutoring is aimed at a single event months away. In an American system the transcript accumulates, semester by semester, and a weak semester grade is permanent. The target is therefore continuous rather than a single peak.

The practical consequence is that the standing weekly session is worth more at an American-curriculum school than the equivalent at a British one, and the crash block is worth less. A family that tutors heavily for three months before an examination and not at all during the semesters has optimised for the wrong measure, because the grade point average was being built the whole time. That is the single most common misalignment in this market for American-track families.

The second consequence is about Advanced Placement scores, which sit alongside the transcript rather than inside it. An Advanced Placement examination is a one-off external event scored one to five, and it behaves like a British examination: technique, timing and command words decide it, and a short preparation block is genuinely effective. So a family on this route is usually buying two different things at two different times of year, and confusing them is why some arrangements feel expensive and ineffective at once. Budgeted separately, one is a modest standing monthly line and the other is a finite block with a date on it, and both become easier to justify.

07

The IB May session counted backwards from a Grade 11 start

A Diploma student beginning in Grade 11 has roughly two years, and the deadlines that matter are nearly all internal. UAE candidates sit the May session. The external papers are the visible endpoint, but the work that decides the grade starts much earlier: an Extended Essay research question, five or six internal assessment proposals, and a Theory of Knowledge essay all have school deadlines set inside board deadlines, and those are the dates a family should be working from.

No specific IB session or results date appears on this page. The International Baccalaureate's own site returns an error to automated checking, so no IB date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and publishing an unverified date across hundreds of pages would be exactly the error this page is written against. Confirm every IB date with the school's Diploma coordinator, who holds the authoritative internal calendar.

What can be stated is the sequence, which is the useful part anyway. The table works backwards from the examination window through the internal deadlines to the point in Grade 11 where decisions are still cheap. Reading it the other way round, the single highest-value action for a Grade 11 family is to get the Extended Essay research question settled early, because a question that is too broad caps the mark before any writing begins and is expensive to fix in the second year. The second highest-value action is to stagger the internal assessment proposals deliberately, because the school's deadlines will cluster them whether or not the student has prepared for that.

One further note on reading the sequence. The dates in the right-hand column are deliberately relative rather than absolute, and that is not vagueness: internal deadlines differ between schools by weeks, and a family acting on a generic calendar found online will be a fortnight out in either direction.

Academic honesty when a household runs two assessment systems

  • Reading criteria, narrowing a question, teaching a method: allowed and worth paying for
  • Marking a draft the student wrote and naming the weak criterion: allowed
  • Contributing text, redrafting to a final version, supplying data: never
  • Official mark schemes and past papers: linked from the board, never reproduced here
  • The test: could the student explain every sentence unprompted?

A school offering both routes produces several kinds of assessed work that must be the student's own, and the rules differ in detail while the principle does not. An IB internal assessment, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay, a research paper carrying a course grade: in every case the submission has to be the student's work, and the consequence of a breach falls on the student rather than on anyone selling help.

The permitted work is wide and genuinely valuable. A tutor can read the published criteria with the student and explain what each descriptor awards. They can press on a research question until it is answerable within the word limit. They can teach the statistical test, the laboratory technique, the citation convention or the economic model the piece needs. They can read a draft the student wrote and name the criterion costing marks. They can rehearse the supervisor conversation.

The prohibited work is equally clear. No contributed text, no redrafting into a final version, no data supplied for the student to present as collected, no editing that leaves the submission substantially someone else's work. One operation ranking in this market sells completed internal assessments at a published price; that purchase risks the student's whole qualification and risks nothing for the seller. The self-test a student can apply is whether they could explain every sentence of their own submission, unprompted, to the person who supervised it. If they could not, the line has been crossed whoever crossed it, and the honest repair is to return to the last point where the work was genuinely theirs.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where island families actually live, and what that does to a session time rather than to a rate. Al Bateen sits on the western side of the island, and the commute pattern around it is the reason the travel premium in the tables below is real.

Al Bateen

An established island neighbourhood with a mix of villas and low-rise apartments, a short school run and a slow exit onto the main corniche roads at the end of the working day. Households here are more often long-term residents than short postings, which makes multi-year weekly arrangements more common than crash blocks.

Al Khalidiyah and the Corniche

Apartment living along the island's western edge, where a large share of students travel by bus rather than by car. The bus timetable rather than a parent's diary sets the earliest realistic session, and that routinely pushes weekday arrangements later than families expect.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Villa neighbourhoods inland from Al Bateen with several long-standing schools nearby. Two-school households are common here, with one child on an American track and a sibling on a British one, which is the usual reason a family needs two different kinds of tutor at once.

Al Reem Island

Dense residential towers with a large school-age population commuting outward in several directions. The exit onto the crossing in the late afternoon is the slowest part of the day, so families here ask for the latest practical weekday slot more often than anyone else on the island.

Saadiyat Island

A short crossing north, with several newer international schools of its own. Families appear here when a sibling attends one of those schools, and the two different school calendars are what makes a shared tutoring schedule difficult and a per-child video slot straightforward.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

The mainland villa corridor, roughly thirty to forty-five minutes from Al Bateen at peak. For families who moved outward but kept the island school place, this is exactly the journey a travelling tutor prices into an in-home rate, and the reason the online figure sits well below it.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland residential area with longer average commutes and a mixed school profile. Households here most often run two children at two schools on two timetables, which makes an evening driving route impractical and a scheduled video session the only arrangement that reliably holds.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah and Al Mushrif

The western and central island neighbourhoods hold several of the emirate's longest-established international schools, drawing from overlapping villa and apartment communities. Students move between them more often than between island and mainland schools, so local course sequencing is familiar across the group.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Muna Academy

Saadiyat, Yas and the mainland corridor

Newer schools on the islands and the villa-corridor schools on the mainland. An Al Bateen family frequently has a sibling in this group, which is the most common reason a household carries an American-track course and an IB or IGCSE course at the same time.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course and the assessment, not the subject

A request that says Chemistry gets a generalist. One that says IB Chemistry Higher Level, Paper 2, currently a 4, or an Advanced Placement course by name, reaches someone who has taught that assessment. At a school running two routes this matters more than usual, because the same subject label covers two different examinations.

  2. 02

Say which band you are shopping in

This page publishes the market bands and what each should include. Tell us which one you are aiming at and we will say honestly whether it covers what you are asking for. An entry-band budget for Higher Level coursework support is a mismatch, and it is better identified in a first message than in a third session.

  3. 03

Use the free trial lesson to run the checks

One session with the proposed tutor, no payment and no card. Ask them in it to name the recurring loss on the last piece of marked work, to say which course or specification they teach, and whether they hold a MoHRE permit. Three verifiable answers in one hour is a better basis than any published rating.

  4. 04

Separate the transcript work from the exam work

At an American-curriculum school these are two different purchases: a standing weekly session that protects the semester grade, and a short block before an Advanced Placement examination or an SAT sitting. Budgeting them as one line is why some arrangements feel expensive and ineffective simultaneously.

  5. 05

Get the availability answer before you commit

If no specialist in that course is free at the time you need, you are told in advance and given the alternatives: a different slot, a different tutor, or a specialist outside the UAE teaching on Gulf Standard Time. No competitor page measured for this project publishes a coverage limit of any kind.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Claims you can check against a primary source

Every rate here is attributed to its publisher, every regulatory point to the authority that published it, and every historical date to the source that reported it. No satisfaction percentage, review count or star rating appears on this page, because none could be evidenced with a sample size, a date and a method.

Matched by course and assessment, not by grade level

At a school running an American diploma alongside the IB Diploma, the same subject name covers two different examinations with different mark schemes. A tutor matched to the named course and level knows which one, and a tutor matched to a grade level does not.

The American-track equivalency numbers published

SAT Math 450, IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450: specific published thresholds that families usually meet at Grade 12 and should have handled in Grade 11. Zero competitors in four of the ten query clusters measured for this project mention equivalency at all.

Online delivery stated before any payment

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are offered only in India. Two ranking competitors route UAE parents to numbers outside the country without saying where delivery actually happens.

No claimed approvals of any kind

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson or the College Board, and names no school on this page as a client or partner. The phrase a parent should treat as a warning is any provider calling itself regulator-approved.

A coursework boundary set out in writing first

A tutor reads, questions and gives feedback on work the student wrote, and does not contribute text, redraft to a final version or supply data for any internal assessment, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or graded research paper. The line is stated before the first coursework session because the qualification at risk is the student's.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How can a parent in Abu Dhabi verify that a tutoring rate is reasonable?+

Compare the quote against published market figures rather than against a feeling. Online entry rates run roughly AED 33 to 150, with Tutopiya advertising from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300, Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Course specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and AED 650 is the highest published figure found. Each belongs to the provider named.

What should a tutor be able to tell me in the first conversation?+

Five things, all verifiable. Which market band their rate sits in. Whether the figure is per hour or per session, and the session length. Whether marking and written feedback between sessions are included or extra. Which course, level or specification code they teach. And whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit. A provider who answers all five plainly is operating differently from one who answers with a satisfaction percentage, and that contrast is more informative than any published rating.

What does the UAE Ministry of Education require from an American high school diploma?+

The published requirements include specific test thresholds. English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the academic IELTS test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those numbers are concrete and they need to exist before an application, which makes Grade 11 the right time to deal with them. Confirm the current requirements with the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority.

Is the Advanced Placement route or the IB Diploma easier for our child?+

Neither is simply easier; they ask for different things. The Advanced Placement route is modular, so a weak result in one course stays contained, and the school transcript and grade point average carry most of the weight. The IB Diploma is a single package with compulsory breadth, internal assessment in every subject and an Extended Essay, and it punishes poor time management more than weak content. A steady, deep worker often prefers the first; an organised, broad worker often prefers the second.

Should tutoring at an American-curriculum school be continuous or before exams?+

Mostly continuous, which is the opposite of the British-curriculum answer. The transcript and grade point average accumulate semester by semester, so a weak semester grade is permanent rather than recoverable, and a standing weekly session protects the measure that actually counts. A pre-examination crash block is still worth buying for an Advanced Placement examination or an SAT sitting, because those behave like external papers. Treating the two as one budget line is the commonest misalignment for American-track families in this market.

When should SAT preparation start for a student aiming at UAE equivalency?+

Grade 11 rather than Grade 12. The Ministry's American-track mathematics requirement is at least 450 in the SAT Math test, which is not a demanding target for a student who has prepared properly once, but it must exist before the application. English can be satisfied by IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450. Leaving all three to the final year stacks them against university deadlines and against the Advanced Placement examination window in the same spring.

Does an Advanced Placement tutor need to be different from a subject tutor?+

Usually, yes. An Advanced Placement examination is externally set and scored one to five, and like any external paper it is decided by timing, command words and answer shape rather than by broad subject knowledge. A tutor who has prepared students for that specific course knows what the scoring guidelines reward. A strong subject teacher who has never seen the course can teach the content accurately and still leave two or three points on the table through unfamiliarity with the format.

Why does the in-home rate in Al Bateen reach AED 500 an hour?+

Because the fee contains a journey. A tutor reaching Al Bateen at five in the afternoon spends a substantial part of the evening on the corniche roads, and that time sits inside the rate whether or not the invoice itemises it. Travel also loses sessions: families with travelling tutors commonly lose two or three of a twenty-eight-session term. IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE at any rate, and the figures are published only so a family can see what the extra money buys.

Which authority inspects schools in Abu Dhabi and where is the report published?+

The Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes. Read them on ADEK's own site rather than on an aggregator, because aggregated ratings go stale and band vocabulary differs between emirates. Across the competitor pages measured for this project in October 2026, ADEK was named by nobody at all. Dubai sits with KHDA, Sharjah with SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah with its Department of Knowledge, and three emirates with the federal Ministry.

Is a private tuition permit actually required, and does it cost the tutor anything?+

Required, and free. An individual providing private lessons in the UAE needs a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. The ministry's service page lists no fee and a two working day completion time, with applications through its smart app, website and e-services system. Anyone quoting a permit fee at you has it wrong. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Can a tutor supply data or sources for an internal assessment that is running late?+

No. A tutor can teach the statistical test or laboratory technique the investigation needs, explain the citation convention, read a draft the student wrote and name the criterion costing marks, and rehearse the supervisor meeting. A tutor cannot supply data for the student to present as collected, contribute text, or redraft a passage into its final form. One operation ranking in this market sells completed internal assessments; the thing that purchase risks is the student's entire qualification, not the seller's business.

At what point in Grade 11 should the Extended Essay question be locked down?+

Mid Grade 11 at the latest, and earlier if possible. A research question that is too broad caps the achievable mark before any writing happens, and fixing it in Grade 12 means rewriting rather than editing. The highest-value single hour a Diploma family can buy in Grade 11 is a session that interrogates the question until it is answerable in four thousand words. Confirm every internal deadline with the school's Diploma coordinator, who holds the authoritative calendar rather than any published summary.

Why are there no specific IB session dates anywhere on this page?+

Because they could not be verified from the International Baccalaureate itself. The organisation's own site returns an error to automated checking, so no IB session or results date in this project is confirmed at source, and publishing an unverified date across hundreds of pages would be the exact failure this page is written against. UAE candidates sit the May session; for every specific date, ask the school's Diploma coordinator, who holds the authoritative internal and external calendar.

Can one tutor cover both a Diploma subject and an Advanced Placement course?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. The content overlap between, say, an Advanced Placement science course and the equivalent Diploma subject at Higher Level is real but partial, and the assessments differ substantially in format and scoring. A tutor who has taught both can be efficient for a household running two children on two routes. A tutor who has taught one and read about the other will be noticeably weaker in the second, and the trial lesson is where to test that.

What happens if no specialist is available for the course and slot we need?+

You are told before paying. The alternatives are a different time in the week, a different tutor at the same level, or a specialist based outside the UAE teaching on Gulf Standard Time, which is how scarcer courses usually get covered. No competitor page measured for this project discloses a coverage limit, and several route UAE parents to numbers outside the country without saying where delivery happens. A planable availability answer is worth more than an unconditional yes.

Can sessions move for Ramadan, travel and the spring assessment pile-up?+

Yes, and the spring pile-up is the real reason it matters here. Advanced Placement examinations, SAT sittings and an IB May session fall close together, so a schedule has to flex within a few weeks rather than across a term. During Ramadan, timings commonly shift to after Iftar, which a video arrangement handles by changing a calendar entry rather than a driving route. A student travelling for a fortnight keeps the slot instead of losing a month of continuity.

Run the five checks, then take a free trial lesson

If your child is at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, the useful first message names the course and assessment, the market band you are shopping in, and the window in the week that genuinely works. You will get a straight answer on availability for that course, the market context for the rate, and a free trial lesson with the proposed tutor before anything is charged. Use that hour to run the checks on this page: ask for the recurring loss on a marked script, the course or specification taught, and the permit position. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
