IB Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Searching for an IB home tutor in Abu Dhabi is a reasonable thing to type, and this page answers it properly: what the in-home market charges, what the drive from Khalifa City to the Corniche does to a 17:00 start, and which permit a private tutor must hold before teaching your child at all. Then it says plainly that IB Gram delivers this as one-to-one online tuition and lets a comparison table make the case. No tutor is sent to a UAE address; visiting households is an India-only service.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Why families type home tutor, and what they are usually asking for

Almost nobody searching for an IB home tutor in Abu Dhabi has strong feelings about the front door. What they want is four things bundled together: one adult giving their child undivided attention, a fixed time each week that does not depend on the child organising it, a parent able to tell whether anything is happening, and no additional driving in a city where the school run already eats an hour. Three of those four are properties of one-to-one teaching rather than of location.

The fourth, visibility, is the one families care about most and talk about least. Having a tutor in the dining room means a parent walking past can hear whether the hour is being used. That is a real benefit and it deserves a real replacement rather than a dismissal, which is why a later section of this page sets out exactly what substitutes for it: a recorded session, a shared running document, a marked script returned rather than described, and a written note every fortnight.

What in-home tutoring also brings is a cost structure nobody itemises. The Abu Dhabi market charges roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour for a visit, against AED 150 to 300 for a comparable qualified tutor online, and the gap is travel rather than teaching. A tutor who drives from Mussafah to Saadiyat for a 17:30 session has given up the better part of two hours and will price that in, openly or otherwise. You are paying for a car, in a city where the 17:00 band is the slowest hour of the day.

Then there is the pool problem, which is the one that actually decides outcomes. Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohort is smaller than Dubai's and spread across more schools, from the island cluster around Saadiyat and Al Bateen through the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor out to Al Shamkha and Zayed City. The number of people who can teach Chemistry HL to a high standard, hold a valid tutoring permit, live within a sensible drive of your community and are free at your preferred hour is frequently zero. The online pool is not.

So this page does both halves of the job. It answers the home-tutoring question with real figures, real drive times and the actual permit rules, because a family deciding between models deserves the information rather than a redirection. And it states the position without hedging: IB Gram does not send tutors into homes anywhere in the United Arab Emirates. That service exists only in India. Everything delivered to an Abu Dhabi family is one-to-one, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, with the recording kept so the hour can be revisited. The rest of this page is written to be useful whichever model you choose at the end of it.

At a glance

  • In-home visiting across the emirate runs roughly AED 180-500 an hour; the premium is travel
  • A private tutor needs a MoHRE permit, free of charge and valid for two years
  • Reported ADEK ethics rules bar a teacher from paid tutoring of their own school's students
  • Recorded sessions, returned marked scripts and a fortnightly note replace sitting in the room
  • No home visits in Abu Dhabi from IB Gram; that is an India-only service
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The three IB programmes Abu Dhabi families ask about carry different reasons for wanting someone in the house. Primary parents want supervision. Middle Years parents want structure. Diploma parents want subject expertise they cannot find locally. Each needs a different answer, and only one of them is really about the front door.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and the service component. This is where the in-home model breaks down hardest, because what a DP student needs is someone who teaches that exact paper at that exact level, and geography is unrelated to whether such a person exists nearby. A sixteen-year-old also does not need supervision; they need a specialist.

An Abu Dhabi DP student typically has a school day ending between 15:00 and 15:45, a commute, and mandatory UAE subject requirements running alongside the Diploma. A visiting tutor arriving at 17:30 after a cross-city drive gets a tired student at the worst hour. A video session can sit at 19:30 after food and a break, which is the single biggest scheduling advantage and the one nobody advertises.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed on four criteria per subject, converted to a grade out of seven. The genuine need here is routine: a fixed hour, consistent expectations, and work that gets checked. Those are organisational properties, and a video session at a fixed slot delivers them as well as a visit does, provided the slot is actually fixed and not negotiated weekly.

Middle Years parents in the emirate are the group most likely to want to overhear the lesson, and reasonably so at this age. The substitutes matter most here: a recorded session a parent can sample, a shared document showing what was set, and a short written note. Those give a clearer picture than overhearing half a conversation through a door.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external examinations, so the work is narrow by design: number fluency, reading, handwriting and written expression in short sessions. Attention span sets the length rather than the syllabus, and twenty-five to thirty-five minutes is usually the honest maximum for a seven-year-old regardless of where the adult is sitting.

This is the one age band where the in-home case is strongest, because a young child needs an adult physically managing the session. Where a family's requirement is genuinely supervision of a primary-age child, a visiting tutor may be the right answer and we will say so. IB Gram does not provide that in the UAE, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

TRANSAges 11-17 · any entry year

Curriculum transitions into the IB

Students arriving into an Abu Dhabi IB school from CBSE, the American system, the British curriculum or a national system elsewhere carry specific, mappable gaps rather than general weakness. The work is a subject-by-subject audit against the IB course they have joined, then a short block closing the named differences. It is finite and it should be quoted as finite.

Mid-year arrivals are common in Abu Dhabi because of posting cycles, and a student joining DP1 in January has missed a term of a two-year course. That is an urgent, bounded piece of work with a deadline attached, and it is the single most common reason a family wants someone in the house immediately. A specialist available this week over video beats a generalist available tomorrow in person.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects Abu Dhabi families most often ask for by name when they search for in-home help, with the reason each one ends up on the list. In every case the limiting factor is whether a specialist in that paper exists and is free, not how far they would have to drive.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

HL

The most requested single course in the emirate and the one where generalist help does least. Proof, complex numbers and the harder calculus are not teachable by someone who last saw them at A-Level. Handwritten working is central, which is why a document camera matters more than physical proximity.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and regression with a graphing calculator assumed throughout. Screen sharing is genuinely better than sitting side by side here, because the tutor can see the calculator output and the spreadsheet at the same time rather than leaning over a shoulder.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the mark spread, and the scientific investigation is worth 20 per cent of the grade across four criteria. The practical work happens in the school laboratory either way; the analysis and evaluation are where a tutor earns their hour.

Physics

HL and SL

Extended-response derivations are where marks go missing, usually because a correct physical idea is asserted without the algebra the mark scheme wants. Specialists at Higher Level are thin on the ground in the emirate, which is exactly why insisting on a local visit narrows the field to almost nothing.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume rather than conceptual difficulty, and marks lost to command terms: describing when the paper asked for an explanation or a comparison. Data-based questions are the most coachable part of the course and are usually the least practised at home.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis, a comparative essay, the individual oral and, at HL, the HL essay. The oral is rehearsable and therefore the component where preparation pays most reliably. Rehearsing it over video has an advantage: the recording lets the student hear themselves.

Economics and Business Management

HL and SL

Both lost on evaluation rather than knowledge. A diagram with correct axes and an explained shift earns marks prose will not, and the top band needs a judgement that chooses. Marking a paragraph line by line is identical work on a shared screen and on a kitchen table.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

First language and additional language

Abu Dhabi students carry Arabic alongside the IB because the federal baseline requires Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies in private schools. Support has to distinguish between the school's mandatory stream and any separate examined qualification, because they are not the same syllabus.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all Diploma candidates

Worth up to three bonus points between them. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 with critical thinking alone carrying 12, and the Theory of Knowledge essay has a 1,600-word ceiling. Both are read-and-annotate work rather than taught content, which is well suited to written feedback.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three delivery shapes are available to an Abu Dhabi household, and only two of them are available from us. Setting all three out with their real costs is more useful than pretending the choice is simpler than it is.

One-to-one over live video, weekly

The default. A fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time, one tutor, one subject at one level, with a shared whiteboard and a document camera so handwritten working is visible in both directions. Sessions are recorded. No travel time appears in the rate because none is incurred, which is most of the price difference against a visit.

  • Fixed weekly slot, chosen around the actual school-run finish
  • Document camera for handwritten mathematics and annotated scripts
  • Recorded, so a tired 19:30 session is still usable the next morning
  • No travel surcharge, no cancellation because of traffic

Short intensive block over video

Two or three sessions a week for four to six weeks, used before a mock, before an internal coursework deadline, or to close a gap left by a mid-year arrival. Finite by design and quoted as finite. The first session is a timed diagnostic rather than teaching, because a block this short cannot afford a wrong starting point.

  • Defined end date and a named deliverable
  • Timed diagnostic in week one, marked against the published criteria
  • Suited to mid-year arrivals and coursework deadlines
  • Two to three sessions a week, 60 or 90 minutes

In-home visiting, for completeness

The model this search describes, offered by independent tutors and agencies across the emirate at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. It genuinely suits a primary-age child who needs an adult managing the session. IB Gram does not provide it anywhere in the UAE, and a family whose requirement is specifically a person in the room should know that before they spend another click here.

  • Market rate AED 180-500 an hour, travel priced into the hour
  • Best fit: a young child who needs physical supervision
  • Tutor must hold a valid MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • Not offered by IB Gram in the UAE; India only

What an in-home IB tutor costs in Abu Dhabi, and what the travel adds

Most pages ranking for this search publish no figure at all, and two of them quote United States dollars. Here is the market in dirhams, with each range attributed. Bestimate's 2026 rate table for the UAE puts in-home tutoring at AED 180 to 350 an hour, with independent home tutors going to AED 500. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300, and Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 for a premium named tutor.

The difference between those two bands is not teaching quality and it is not seniority. It is a car. A tutor driving from the island to Al Reef for a 17:30 hour has committed somewhere between ninety minutes and two hours of unpaid time to a sixty-minute lesson, and no rational person absorbs that. It is recovered in the rate, in a minimum booking length, or in a quiet preference for students who live nearby, which is how a family ends up with the closest tutor rather than the right one.

Monthly packages visible in the market make the gap concrete. Around AED 799 a month buys eight online sessions. In-home packages of four two-hour visits are advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year support. None of these is an IB Gram price. We publish no rate card on these pages: the free trial lesson and the conversation after it are where a quote comes from.

The Abu Dhabi drive, and what it does to a 17:00 start

Abu Dhabi is laid out as an island city with a mainland that keeps extending, which produces long, predictable journeys rather than short unpredictable ones. A tutor who lives on the island and teaches in Al Shamkha is committing to a real expedition, and the hour between 17:00 and 18:00 is when everyone else is making the same trip in the opposite direction. The table below is a planning assumption, not a measurement, and it should be checked against your own experience of the route at the hour you want.

What the drive does to the lesson is the part worth thinking about. A tutor who arrives nine minutes late has lost nine minutes of a paid hour, and will usually still leave on time because another student is waiting. A tutor who hits an unusually bad run arrives at 17:50 for a 17:30 session with a student whose attention is already gone. Across a term, a weekly session losing ten minutes to traffic has lost most of a lesson, and nobody records it anywhere.

The second-order effect is on the slot itself. In-home scheduling pushes sessions towards the earliest hour the tutor can physically manage after their own working day, which is frequently the worst hour for the student: straight off a school bus, before food, in the heat. Video scheduling has no travel constraint, so a session can sit at 19:30 after a break and a meal. Of all the arguments for online delivery in this emirate, that one produces the most visible difference in the first fortnight.

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach in Abu Dhabi?

This is the question almost nobody asks and the one with the clearest answer. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, and is granted free of charge for two years through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The ministry's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee, states a two-working-day completion time, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system.

The eligibility list is broader than most families assume. It includes teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. So a university student tutoring GCSE mathematics in the evening is not operating outside the system by definition, provided they hold the permit. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from the ministry are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws.

Two cautions belong here. No fine schedule is published, and a figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone, including us. And a tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor: in Dubai that requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. Nobody should describe themselves as approved by a regulator unless they hold the specific permit and can show the number. IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation or licence of any kind, and says so.

The ethics rule that makes your child's own teacher the wrong choice

The most common in-home arrangement in this market is also the most problematic: paying a teacher at the child's own school. It is attractive for obvious reasons. They know the scheme of work, they know the cohort, and they may be the person who writes the predicted grade. That last point is the problem rather than the attraction.

ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. This is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document itself, so verify the current wording against ADEK before relying on it. The structural point does not depend on the citation: the person assessing your child should not also be invoicing you.

There is a quieter benefit to an outside tutor that families discover afterwards. A student who has misunderstood something taught by their own teacher often will not say so to that teacher, because the admission carries a social cost in a classroom they return to on Monday. A different adult, marking against the published criteria rather than against their own lesson, gets a straighter answer about what is not understood. That independence is worth more than familiarity with the scheme of work, which any competent subject specialist can reconstruct from the student's own exercise book.

05

Online against in-home for an Abu Dhabi household

Here is the comparison without the sales layer. In-home visiting wins on three things: physical management of a young child, a parent's ability to overhear, and the absence of any technology to go wrong. Online wins on pool size, scheduling freedom, cost, the existence of a recording, and the fact that nobody is in a car at 17:30 in August. For a Diploma student the second list decides it; for a seven-year-old the first list might.

The pool argument deserves a number rather than an adjective. Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohort is spread across many schools, and the subset of qualified specialists for any given Higher Level subject who also live within a reasonable drive of a specific community and are free at a specific hour is frequently empty. A family that insists on physical attendance has not chosen a better tutor; they have chosen from a shorter list, and in Higher Level Physics or a Group 2 language that list may contain nobody at all.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, or anywhere else in the UAE. Visiting households is a service we run only in India. That is stated on every country page on this site and it is not softened here. If your requirement is specifically that an adult sits in the room, the honest answer is that we are not the right provider, and the market rates in the first table of this page will help you negotiate with one who is.

Supervision without a stranger in the sitting room

  • Sessions recorded, so any hour can be sampled afterwards
  • A shared document holding what was taught and what was set
  • Marked scripts returned to you, not summarised in a message
  • A one-page fortnightly note written to be acted on
  • An error log that shows whether the same mistakes keep recurring

The real loss when a tutor is not physically present is parental visibility, and it deserves a concrete replacement rather than reassurance. Four things do the job, and all four are better evidence than overhearing a lesson through a door. Sessions are recorded, so a parent can sample ten minutes of any hour they paid for rather than inferring from tone. A shared running document holds what was taught and what was set, so nothing depends on a teenager's account of it.

Marked work is returned rather than described. A script with dropped marks circled and the mark scheme's own phrasing written beside each is something a parent can hold, compare against the same exercise six weeks earlier, and show to a subject teacher. And a one-page note every fortnight says what moved, what did not and what the next fortnight targets, written for a parent who does not teach the subject.

Those four together answer a question that sitting in the room never quite does: is this working? A parent listening at the door learns whether the tutor is talkative and whether the child sounds engaged. Neither correlates reliably with marks. A dated pair of timed scripts four weeks apart, plus an error log showing the same mistakes disappearing, answers the question directly. The visibility is different in kind, and in practice it is more useful, because it is dated, comparable and written down rather than recalled afterwards from a doorway.

07

What a parent sitting in on a lesson actually learns

It is worth being precise about this, because it is the emotional centre of the in-home preference. A parent present for a lesson learns three things reliably: whether the tutor turned up, whether the hour was used, and whether their child seems comfortable. Those matter. A tutor who spends twenty minutes on small talk is easy to detect from the next room, and families who have been through a bad arrangement are right to want that tripwire.

What presence does not reveal is whether the teaching is correct. A confident explanation of a Chemistry mechanism sounds exactly like a confident wrong explanation of one, and no parent who does not teach the subject can tell them apart from the hallway. Nor does presence show whether the hour was pointed at the right thing. A tutor working patiently through a topic the student already understands sounds productive and is wasting the term.

That is why the substitutes above are designed around marked work rather than around observation. A recording covers the attendance-and-effort question that presence answers. The marked script and the error log answer the correctness-and-direction questions that presence never could. Families who move from an in-home arrangement to this one usually report the same thing after a month: they see less and know more. That is an unfamiliar trade, and for a student old enough to manage their own session it is the right one, because the thing a parent needs to know is whether marks are moving rather than whether the room sounded busy.

08

Honest limits on assessed work and materials

  • A tutor teaches, questions and annotates; the student revises their own work
  • No assessed work is authored, supplied or edited to completion
  • Feedback is written down so it can be checked by a parent or a supervisor
  • Board materials are cited and linked, never redistributed as files

The in-home market in this region contains some of the worst practice in the sector, and a page about home tutoring has an obligation to name it. At least one site ranking for these searches sells completed Internal Assessments. Buying one is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student's own certification, not on the vendor. Proximity makes this worse rather than better: a tutor in the house, unsupervised, with a deadline on Monday, is the exact situation in which the line gets crossed quietly.

The permissible version is narrow and worth stating. A tutor teaches the skill the task assesses. A tutor explains what each criterion rewards and how many marks it carries. A tutor reads a draft the student has produced and writes down what the criteria would credit and refuse. The student then revises it, in their own words, with their own judgements. Nothing assessed is authored, supplied or edited to completion, and feedback is written rather than spoken so a supervisor or a parent can see exactly what was said.

Materials follow the same rule. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson. They are referenced, linked and used on screen from the official source rather than reproduced as downloads or redistributed as files. That is the lawful position and it also means the student is working from the real document rather than from somebody's retyped version of it, which is a more common problem than families expect.

09

Booking, and the coverage position stated up front

Send three things: the subject and level exactly as the school entered them, the most recent report or mock mark, and one piece of work a teacher has already annotated. The third is the one families leave out and the one that shortens the diagnosis most, because a teacher's own marks on a real script show how the department reads the work rather than how a single grade summarises a whole term of it.

The free trial lesson is a real lesson with the tutor who would teach the course, booked without card details. What it tests is whether your child will admit to this particular adult that they do not understand something. No amount of credential-reading answers that, and it is the single best predictor of whether the arrangement will produce anything.

Coverage is stated before you pay. Mathematics at either level, the three sciences, English A, Economics and Business Management are reasonably covered in UAE evening hours, with 17:00 to 19:00 the tightest band because every family wants it. Group 2 languages beyond French and Spanish take longer. Higher Level Further Mathematics, Design Technology and Music are genuinely thin, and where nothing suitable is free you are told so and offered a later slot, a wait, or a straight no. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, and several route UAE parents to a non-UAE phone number without ever mentioning where the tutor actually sits.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities and what a visiting tutor would have faced

These seven communities generate most of the in-home enquiries in the emirate. The notes describe the journey a visiting tutor would have made and what that does to the hour, because that cost is real whether or not anyone itemises it on an invoice. Sessions themselves run over live video from all of them.

Khalifa City

Central to the school corridor and therefore the easiest community for a visiting tutor to reach, which is why in-home rates quoted here sit at the lower end. It is also the single largest source of Diploma enquiries, so the subject-specialist shortage bites hardest.

Al Reef and Al Samha

Out towards the Dubai road, far enough that a city-based tutor is committing well over an hour of driving for a one-hour session. Families here are quoted the top of the in-home range, and availability collapses to whoever already lives in the community.

Zayed City and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Large, grid-planned and well inland. A tutor coming from the island faces the full 17:00 outbound queue in both directions, which in practice means the session either starts late or starts at 19:00. Video removes the choice entirely.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Fast-growing villa communities with young families and a thin local tutor pool. The honest in-home answer here is that the subject specialist a Diploma student needs almost certainly does not live within reach, and a generalist who does is not a substitute.

Shakhbout City

Between the mainland communities and the airport road, with a mixed school catchment. Sibling bookings are common, and consecutive video slots work better than a visit because two children on different programmes need different tutors, not one compromise.

Mussafah and Baniyas

Industrial and residential mix with long cross-city journeys to the island schools. Students here are often at schools some distance from home already, so adding a tutor's commute to the family's own is the least appealing part of the in-home model.

Yas Island and Al Raha Beach

Short hops to the Khalifa City schools but an awkward inbound journey from the city centre. Evening slots after 19:30 dominate here, and a recorded session matters because the hour sits late in a long day.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The Khalifa City and Al Raha school corridor

Where most of the emirate's IB and British provision sits, and where a visiting tutor's journey is shortest. Students we support from these schools usually ask for a named Diploma subject at a named level, which is a specialist request rather than a supervision request.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS American Academy - Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Reach British School
  • Emirates National Schools

The island schools: Saadiyat, Al Bateen and the Corniche

A long drive from the mainland communities where many families actually live, which is the practical reason in-home quotes for these addresses sit high. Diploma departments here are experienced, and the usual request is a second opinion on a draft rather than content teaching.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Al Reem Island, Yas Island and the mainland communities

Newer schools with growing cohorts and a high proportion of mid-year arrivals. The thin local tutor pool in these communities is the clearest argument against an in-home requirement, because the specialist a student needs lives somewhere else by definition.

  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • GEMS Cambridge International School - Abu Dhabi

Schools are named as the context Abu Dhabi families live in. IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the level and your real evening window

Not the window you would like, the one that exists after the school run, food and a younger sibling's bedtime. In most Abu Dhabi households that is later than families first suggest, and a slot set honestly at 19:30 survives a term where an optimistic 17:15 collapses inside a fortnight.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach

A real lesson on real content, with the person who would take the course rather than a coordinator, booked without card details. It answers the one question credentials cannot: whether your child will say out loud, to this particular adult, that they are lost.

  3. 03

A timed diagnostic before any teaching

Session one is a past-paper section at the correct level, marked against the published mark scheme while your child watches. It produces an error log classified by topic and command term, which becomes the planning document. Teaching that starts before this exists is teaching aimed at a described problem rather than a real one.

  4. 04

Visibility set up deliberately, not improvised

Recording on, shared document created, marked work returned to you rather than described, and a fortnightly note scheduled. These are the four substitutes for sitting in the room, and they work only if they are set up in week one rather than promised and forgotten.

  5. 05

A term review you can act on

At the end of a term the first diagnostic sits beside the latest one and the recurring-error count is compared. Where the comparison shows little movement, the useful options are a different tutor, a different approach, or stopping. We will say which we think it is rather than letting the arrangement drift.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The home-tutoring question answered, not deflected

Real market rates with sources, real drive times, the actual permit rules and the ethics position on a child's own teacher. A family comparing models deserves the information even where it points somewhere other than us, and the first table on this page is useful whoever you end up hiring.

No travel in the rate, because none is incurred

The gap between AED 180-500 for a visit and AED 150-300 for a qualified online tutor is mostly a car. Removing the journey removes the premium, the late arrival, the traffic cancellation and the quiet preference for students who happen to live close to the tutor.

A pool chosen by subject, not by postcode

For Higher Level Physics or a Group 2 language, the set of specialists within a drive of Al Shamkha who are free at 18:00 can be empty. Choosing by the paper the student sits rather than by distance is the single biggest determinant of whether the hours are worth anything.

Visibility by artefact

A recording to sample, a shared document, a marked script returned to you, an error log and a fortnightly one-page note. Parents who move from an in-home arrangement usually say the same thing after a month: they see less and know more.

The assessed-work line stated plainly

A tutor teaches, questions and annotates; the student writes. Nothing assessed is authored, supplied or edited to completion, and the feedback is written down so a supervisor can audit it. In a market where finished Internal Assessments are openly on sale, this is a real difference rather than a slogan.

Coverage disclosed before payment

Where no specialist is free in UAE evening hours, you are told before booking and offered a later slot, a wait, or nothing. Filling a Further Mathematics HL request with a generalist produces a cancelled arrangement in week three and a wasted month in between.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Does IB Gram send a tutor to our house in Abu Dhabi?+

No. Visiting households is a service IB Gram runs only in India, and it is not offered anywhere in the United Arab Emirates. Everything delivered to an Abu Dhabi family is one-to-one and runs over live video on Gulf Standard Time. That position is stated on every country page on this site rather than buried here. If your requirement is specifically that an adult is physically present, which is a fair requirement for a young child, we are not the right provider and the market rates published on this page will help you negotiate with someone who is.

How much does an in-home IB tutor charge in Abu Dhabi?+

Roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. Bestimate's 2026 UAE rate table puts in-home tutoring at AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors reaching AED 500. Monthly in-home packages of four two-hour visits are advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799. By comparison a qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200 and TutorChase AED 270. The difference between the two bands is travel rather than teaching quality. Those are market figures from published sources with the date attached, not an IB Gram price list.

Why is a visiting tutor more expensive if the lesson is the same length?+

Because the lesson is not what you are paying for in full. A tutor driving from Al Bateen to Al Reef for a 17:30 hour has committed ninety minutes to two hours of unpaid travel to a sixty-minute booking, and that time is recovered somewhere: in the hourly rate, in a minimum booking length, or in an unspoken preference for students who live nearby. The last version is the expensive one, because it quietly narrows your choice of tutor to whoever is geographically convenient rather than whoever teaches the paper your child sits.

Does my child's tutor need a UAE permit, and can I ask to see it?+

Yes to both. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, whose service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing and lists a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so be wary of any quoted amount.

Can we hire the teacher who actually teaches my son at his school?+

It is the most common arrangement in this market and the most problematic. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct is reported to bar the same thing. Verify the current wording with ADEK before relying on it. The structural objection stands anyway: the person who writes your son's predicted grade should not also be invoicing you, and a student rarely admits confusion to the teacher they face again on Monday.

My daughter is in Al Shamkha. Would a local tutor even cover Physics HL?+

Probably not, and this is the clearest practical argument on the page. Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohort is spread across many schools, and the set of people who can teach Higher Level Physics to a high standard, hold a valid permit, live within a sensible drive of Al Shamkha and are free at 18:00 is frequently empty. A family insisting on physical attendance in that situation has not chosen a better tutor; they have chosen from a much shorter list, and sometimes from a list of one generalist. Online, the pool is everyone who teaches that paper.

How do I know the hour is being used if nobody is in the room?+

Four substitutes, all of them stronger evidence than overhearing a lesson. Sessions are recorded, so you can sample ten minutes of any hour you paid for. A shared document holds what was taught and what was set, so nothing depends on a teenager's summary. Marked scripts are returned to you rather than described, with dropped marks circled and the mark scheme's own wording beside each. And a one-page note every fortnight says what moved and what did not. Presence tells you whether a tutor is talkative. A dated pair of marked scripts tells you whether anything changed.

Is a visiting tutor better for a primary-age child?+

Often, yes, and it would be dishonest to argue otherwise. A six- or seven-year-old needs an adult physically managing the session: keeping them at the table, controlling the materials, handling the fifteen-minute attention ceiling. A video call demands self-regulation a young child does not reliably have, and a parent ends up supervising the supervision. Where that is the requirement, an in-home tutor at the market rates published on this page is a sensible purchase. IB Gram does not provide it in the UAE, and saying so now saves you a conversation later.

What equipment does my son need at home for a video session?+

Less than families expect. A laptop with a working microphone, a reliable connection, and some way to show handwritten working: a phone on a cheap stand pointed at the page, or a tablet with a stylus. For Mathematics and the sciences the handwriting channel matters more than video quality, because a tutor needs to see the working as it is produced rather than the finished answer. Headphones help in an apartment. A second screen is useful at Higher Level but not necessary. Nothing on that list costs more than a single in-home session at the market rate.

What happens to the session if the internet drops mid-lesson?+

The tutor reconnects, usually within a minute, and the lost time is made up at the end or in the following session. This is a smaller failure mode than it sounds, and worth comparing with its in-home equivalent: a tutor stuck in the 17:00 traffic does not arrive late and continue, they lose the first fifteen minutes and leave on time because another student is waiting. Where a connection genuinely fails, the session is rescheduled rather than charged. Recordings mean a partially completed session still leaves something usable behind.

Can sessions move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan?+

Yes, and arranging it in advance works better than improvising week by week. Most Abu Dhabi families shift to a later and shorter slot after Iftar, and because there is no travel involved the move costs nothing and does not depend on a tutor's willingness to drive at an awkward hour. The plan is compressed rather than paused, which matters because school-set internal deadlines for Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay do not move for the calendar. Agree the pattern before the month starts and the term survives it.

Will a tutor sit with my child while they finish their Internal Assessment?+

A tutor will teach the skill the task assesses, explain what each criterion rewards and how many marks it carries, read a draft your child has produced, and write down what the criteria would credit and refuse in it. Your child then revises it themselves, in their own words. What never happens is authoring, supplying or editing assessed work to completion. The proximity question is relevant here: an unsupervised adult in the house with a deadline on Monday is exactly the situation in which that line gets crossed quietly, which is one reason written feedback is the safer format.

We have two children on different IB programmes. Does that work online?+

Better than it works in person, which is the counterintuitive part. Two children at different stages need two different specialists, and an in-home arrangement pushes a family towards one tutor who will cover both because a second visit means a second journey. Online, the sessions simply sit back to back in the evening with two different tutors, two separate plans, two diagnostics and two notes. Sibling bookings are common in Khalifa City and Shakhbout City for exactly this reason, and the convenience of one timetable no longer requires the compromise of one generalist.

How quickly can we start, and what if nobody covers our subject?+

Two to five days for the common subjects: Mathematics at either level, the three sciences, English A, Economics and Business Management. The 17:00 to 19:00 band is the tightest because every family wants it, so a later slot often starts sooner. Group 2 languages beyond French and Spanish take one to three weeks. Higher Level Further Mathematics, Design Technology and Music are genuinely thin and can be unavailable, in which case you are told that before booking and offered a later slot, a wait, or nothing at all rather than a generalist.

What do you actually need from us before the first paid session?+

Three documents and one honest answer. The subject and level exactly as the school entered them, because Higher and Standard Level are different courses and the school's entry is the only reliable record. The most recent report or mock mark. One piece of work a teacher has already annotated, which tells a tutor more in five minutes than a term of grades. And the evening window that genuinely exists in your household after the school run, food and a younger child's bedtime, rather than the one that sounds reasonable in an email.

Compare the models properly, then book a trial

If you came here for an in-home tutor, the figures on this page are yours to use with whoever you hire: AED 180 to 500 an hour from the published market tables, travel inside the rate, and a permit you are entitled to ask to see. If the real requirement was a specialist in your child's actual subject at a time that fits an Abu Dhabi evening, send the subject, the level and your honest window. The free trial lesson is a real lesson with the tutor who would teach, booked without card details, and the coverage position for your subject is stated before anything is paid. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
