IB DP French Ab Initio Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP French ab initio tutor in Abu Dhabi usually gets two questions in the first message: is my child even allowed to take this course, and what will we actually see by the end of DP1? This page answers both. Ab initio is a genuine beginner course at Standard Level only, and the progress ledger below sets out what is measurable at each checkpoint. Lessons run one to one over live video, and the first is free.

  • The eligibility rule explained before you book anything
  • A written progress ledger with numbers, not adjectives
  • Tutors who have taught the ab initio visual-stimulus oral

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Eligibility first: who the ab initio course is actually for

French ab initio is the Diploma's beginner language course, offered at Standard Level only. The IB intends it for students with no previous experience of the language, or so little that starting from the beginning is honest. Your child's school makes the placement decision and is accountable for it, which is why a parent cannot simply choose the easier-looking route. Abu Dhabi families ask about this constantly, because so many students arrive here having done two or three years of classroom French somewhere else and genuinely do not know where they stand.

The practical test schools apply is whether a student has studied the language as a taught subject and for how long. Two years of primary French taught once a week, forgotten over four years since, is a different case from two years of secondary French with written assessments. A short diagnostic settles it quickly: read ten words aloud, conjugate one regular verb in the present, write four sentences about a photograph, answer three questions on a slow audio clip. Take the result to the school rather than arguing from memory, because a coordinator looking at a marked page reaches a decision in minutes and a coordinator listening to a parent's recollection does not.

If the placement is right, the course itself is narrow and learnable. Five prescribed themes with set topics beneath them, three assessed components, and a strong emphasis on controlled accuracy rather than range. Paper 1 is written production and carries a quarter of the grade. Paper 2 holds listening and reading together and carries half. The individual oral, built on a visual stimulus, carries the remaining quarter and is recorded and marked inside your child's school before the IB moderates it.

The second question - what will we see by the end of DP1 - deserves numbers rather than reassurance. A beginner's progress in a language is unusually measurable in the first year: words known and retrievable, verbs controlled in the present and then the past, words produced in a fixed writing time, seconds of unscripted speech before a stall. The ledger further down this page sets out realistic figures at each checkpoint for a student working an hour a week with homework between sessions.

Lessons are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared document for written work. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. That is a straightforward trade rather than a compromise. French ab initio is a small specialism, the visual-stimulus oral has its own technique, and a family in Shakhbout City should be able to reach someone who has taught it rather than someone who can reach Shakhbout City by five o'clock.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The ab initio decision is made at the seam between two IB programmes, and families who understand that seam make a better choice. These notes are about how a language record carries from one programme into the next in this emirate.

DPAges 16-19 - Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

French ab initio is a Group 2 subject at Standard Level for beginners. Three components carry the grade, none of them a written coursework essay. Tutoring is front-loaded: sound-to-spelling mapping, gender, the present tense and a working vocabulary come first, and theme breadth and oral technique follow once the mechanics stop consuming attention.

Abu Dhabi schools often run ab initio with a small mixed group of true beginners and near-beginners, which pulls the pace towards the middle. A true beginner in that room needs the mechanics faster than the class provides, and a near-beginner needs extension the class cannot give either.

MYPAges 11-16 - Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language Acquisition phases are what a school looks at when deciding between ab initio and French B. A phase 1 or low phase 2 record supports the beginner route; a phase 3 or 4 record generally does not. The phases describe capability rather than years served, which is the point families miss.

Because mid-year arrivals are frequent in the emirate, MYP phase placement here often records when a student joined a class rather than what they could do on arrival. That makes the written diagnostic more useful than the phase label when the Diploma choice is being made.

PYPAges 3-12 - FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Primary French in an IB school is usually exposure rather than instruction: songs, greetings, colours, some listening. Valuable for accent and confidence, and almost never enough to disqualify a student from the beginner route six years later. Parents often over-report it when the school asks about prior study.

Several Abu Dhabi primaries offer French as an enrichment subject for a term or two. Schools treat that as exposure rather than taught study, but say so explicitly on the placement form rather than leaving it to be discovered later.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The useful map for a family at this decision point is not a list of Diploma subjects but a list of the language routes your child could end up on, and who each one is really for.

French ab initio

Standard Level only

The beginner route. Controlled accuracy over range, five themes with set topics, and an oral built on a visual stimulus. Suitable for a student with no taught French, or so little that beginning properly is the honest description.

French B at Standard Level

SL

For students with real previous experience. Longer written tasks, faster listening, and an oral that still uses a visual stimulus but assumes a far broader base. The step most near-beginners are placed into, sometimes a year too early.

French B at Higher Level

HL

Adds two literary works written in French and replaces the stimulus oral with an extract-based one. Not a route an ab initio student moves into mid-Diploma, which is why the initial placement carries more weight than families expect.

French A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

A Group 1 subject for students working in French at first-language level, typically from a French-curriculum school. Literary analysis rather than language acquisition, and a different assessment model entirely.

MYP French, phases 1-2

Phases 1-2

The record that supports an ab initio placement. Greetings, present tense, high-frequency vocabulary, simple written responses. A student who leaves phase 2 is well positioned to begin the Diploma beginner course rather than to skip it.

MYP French, phases 3-4

Phases 3-4

The record that usually points to French B SL instead. If your child sat in phase 3 for two years, expect the school to say ab initio is not available to them, and expect that to be the right call.

Spanish ab initio

Standard Level only

The alternative beginner language in most Abu Dhabi schools that run ab initio at all. Same assessment structure, different sound system, and sometimes the only ab initio language actually timetabled in a given year.

German B

HL and SL

Occasionally the available alternative for a student with prior German from a European school. Mentioned here only because families weighing the beginner route sometimes discover a stronger existing option they had forgotten about.

Arabic ab initio

Standard Level only

The other beginner course Abu Dhabi students weigh, with a script phase French does not have. Some families choose it for the local relevance and should know that the first two months look very different from a French start.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Beginner language work rewards frequency over length, so the shapes below are built around short repeated contact rather than long weekly sessions. Most families use the first, and add the third in DP2.

Two half-hours a week

For a true beginner this beats a single hour. Sound-to-spelling mapping, verb patterns and vocabulary all depend on retrieval spaced across days rather than massed in one sitting, and a thirty-minute session survives a long school run far better than a sixty-minute one does.

  • Ten minutes of retrieval, fifteen of new material, five of production
  • A short written task set between the two sessions each week
  • Vocabulary tracked as a count that can be retrieved, not a list seen
  • Easier to protect through activity season than one long slot

Weekly hour with a fortnightly ledger entry

The standard shape once mechanics are established. One hour a week, with a measured checkpoint every fortnight: words retrieved under time, words written in a fixed ten minutes, seconds of unscripted speech. Those numbers go into the ledger and are what you read instead of a comment.

  • One timed writing task per fortnight, marked to the criteria
  • Retrieval tested rather than reviewed
  • A running count of controlled verb patterns
  • A short written summary after each checkpoint

Visual-stimulus oral block

A focused run of sessions before the school's internal recording window. Describing an unfamiliar image under time, connecting it to a prescribed theme and to the target culture, then holding a conversation without reverting to recited sentences. Rehearsals are recorded and reviewed against the criteria.

  • Unfamiliar images, timed as the real task is timed
  • Theme and culture links drilled to automatic recall
  • Recorded attempts played back with the criteria open
  • No tutor involvement in the assessed recording itself

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Is my child eligible for French ab initio? The honest answer

This is the question that brings most families to a page like this one, and it has a clear shape. Ab initio courses are intended for students beginning a language, and the school decides whether a particular student qualifies. The IB expects the course to be taught to beginners, so a school that places an experienced linguist into it is not doing the student a favour; it is creating a problem at moderation and an unfair comparison with genuine beginners elsewhere.

What counts as previous experience in practice is taught study rather than exposure. A student who did French once a week in a Dubai or Abu Dhabi primary six years ago, with no written assessment and no memory of it, is usually treated as a beginner. A student with two years of secondary French, graded reports and written assessments, generally is not. The grey zone is real and the school owns it, so arrive with evidence rather than an opinion.

The useful move is a twenty-minute diagnostic before the placement form goes in. Reading ten words aloud shows whether sound-to-spelling mapping exists. Conjugating one regular verb in the present shows whether grammar was ever taught. Four written sentences about a photograph show production. Three questions on a slow audio clip show comprehension. That evidence makes the conversation with the DP coordinator short and factual, and either outcome is better than a placement that has to be unpicked in January.

02

The course in outline: themes, topics and three components

Ab initio content sits under five prescribed themes with a set of topics beneath each one, and schools choose how deeply to go within them. The vocabulary load is finite and specified in a way that later language courses are not, which is genuinely good news for a beginner: the territory has edges. A student can hold the whole domain in view by the middle of DP1, which almost never happens in French B.

Assessment is in three parts and none of them is a coursework essay. Paper 1 is written production in prescribed text types and carries a quarter of the grade. Paper 2 combines listening and reading and carries half. The individual oral, built on a visual stimulus, carries the final quarter and is conducted and marked by your child's teacher in school before the IB moderates a sample. The number of written tasks, their word ranges and the current criterion wording are set out in the IB subject guide your school holds.

We work from that guide and do not reproduce or supply IB documents, past papers or mark schemes - those are the school's to provide and the IB's to publish. What we do instead is build practice material in the same shape and mark it against the published criteria. Ask your DP coordinator for the component breakdown in writing at the start of DP1; it takes one email and removes most of the confusion that otherwise lasts a whole term.

03

The first twelve weeks of French from zero

  • Sound-to-spelling mapping taught from week one, not assumed
  • Gender and the article system before anything that depends on them
  • Present tense plus the irregulars that appear in real speech
  • Vocabulary counted as retrieved, never as covered

French has no script barrier, which makes the opening faster than Arabic and the first obstacle different: the gap between spelling and sound. Silent final consonants, nasal vowels, liaison, and the fact that four different endings can sound identical in speech while mattering enormously on paper. A beginner who learns vocabulary by eye and then cannot recognise the same words in the listening paper has met this problem, and it is better addressed in week two than in DP2.

Grammar in the first term is deliberately narrow. Gender and the article system, because they poison agreement everywhere if left vague. The present tense of regular verbs plus the handful of irregulars that appear in every sentence a human being actually says. Negation. Question formation. Adjective position and agreement. That is enough to produce real sentences about the first prescribed theme, and producing real sentences early is what keeps a sixteen-year-old beginner engaged.

Vocabulary is handled as a retrievable count rather than a list seen. Thirty words taught and not retrieved a week later are zero words. We test retrieval cold at the start of each session, record what came back, and reteach what did not. By week twelve a student working an hour a week with homework can usually write a short paragraph about a photograph without help, hold thirty seconds of unscripted speech, and answer questions on a slow clip. Those are the figures the ledger tracks, and they are the ones a parent can read without knowing any French themselves.

04

Where ab initio candidates lose marks

  • Reaching for structures beyond secure control and losing the sentence
  • Text-type conventions missing: no opening, no closing, no reader
  • The second hearing of a listening item wasted
  • An oral that is recited rather than spoken, and stalls in conversation
  • Gender and adjective agreement dropped in longer written sentences

Beginner-course losses are different from French B losses and much more systematic. The biggest is attempting range beyond control: a student reaches for a complex structure they half-know, the sentence collapses, and a simpler correct version would have scored better. Ab initio rewards controlled accuracy, and teaching a student to write deliberately within their secure range is worth more marks than teaching them two new tenses.

Second is the text type. Paper 1 names one, and a note, a message, a short letter and a blog entry each have expectations about opening, closing and who is being addressed. Beginners frequently produce undifferentiated prose and lose conventions marks they did not know existed. Third is listening wasted on first-pass writing: a candidate who tries to write full answers during the first hearing arrives at the second with nothing to check.

Fourth is the oral, where recited material runs out. A student who has memorised a description can deliver it fluently and then stall completely when the conversation turns, because nothing in the preparation rehearsed responding. Fifth is agreement - gender, number, adjective position - dropped under time pressure in longer sentences. All five are habits, and habits move faster under one-to-one attention than vocabulary breadth does. The useful consequence is that a beginner's marked work becomes predictive within three tasks. If the same two habits appear each time, the next six weeks write themselves, and nobody has to guess which part of the course to revisit. A student who can name their own two habits is already most of the way to fixing them, which is why the marked task comes back with the pattern written on it rather than only the errors.

05

The visual-stimulus oral at beginner level

  • Describe, link to the theme, link to the culture, then converse
  • Interaction marks exist to catch recited preparation
  • Practise with unfamiliar images and unseen questions
  • Thinking-time phrases are worth drilling to automatic recall

A quarter of the grade is a recording made in your child's school. The candidate works from a visual stimulus, describes it, relates it to a prescribed theme and to the target culture, and then holds a conversation with the teacher. It is marked in school against criteria for language, message and interaction, with the exact letters and allocations set out in the subject guide, and the IB moderates a sample afterwards.

For a beginner the task has a particular trap. Description is learnable and rehearsable, so a student can sound competent for ninety seconds and then meet a question they have not prepared for. The marks for interaction are precisely there to catch that. Preparation therefore has to include unscripted exchange rather than only polished description: unfamiliar images, questions the student has not seen, and the specific phrases that buy thinking time without sounding evasive.

The cultural link is the other commonly missed piece. The task is not only to say what is in the image but to connect it to the theme and to life in a French-speaking context, and a student who describes a market scene without ever mentioning where such a scene sits in the culture has left message marks unclaimed. Three or four transferable linking phrases, drilled until automatic, do more for the mark than another fifty words of vocabulary. Those phrases also survive nerves, which recited content famously does not, and a recording made in a school office on a Tuesday afternoon is a nervous occasion for most sixteen-year-olds.

06

The progress ledger: what is measurable, and when

Parents of beginners get the least informative school reports of anyone, because a comment like making steady progress is true of almost every beginner and tells you nothing. A beginner language is unusually measurable, so we measure it. Four numbers, taken the same way each time, at fixed checkpoints: words retrieved cold in two minutes, verb patterns controlled in a written task, words produced in a fixed ten minutes of timed writing, and seconds of unscripted speech before a stall.

The figures in the table below are what we see from a DP1 student working an hour a week with homework between sessions, and they are a guide rather than a promise. A student with two other new subjects and a heavy Higher Level load will sit lower; a student who does ten minutes of retrieval daily will sit higher. The value is not the absolute number but the direction across checkpoints, measured the same way each time.

No aggregate outcome statistics appear anywhere on this site, because we could not show you the data behind them. What we can show you is one student's ledger, with the dates, the measures and the marked tasks attached. That is also the document to take into a parents evening, because it gives the teacher something specific to respond to rather than a general worry about French. Teachers engage with a marked task and a set of dated measures in a way they cannot engage with a question about whether a child is doing all right, and the conversation that follows is usually more useful to everyone in the room.

07

Switching language or level after the Diploma has started

  • Switches are a school decision with IB registration implications
  • Moving down means systematising partial knowledge - usually quick
  • Moving up means a real content gap - plan a term for it
  • Bring marked evidence to the conversation, not an impression

Switches happen and they are survivable if they happen early. A student placed in French B who cannot cope moving down to ab initio, or an ab initio student who is clearly beyond the course moving up, are both normal events in DP1. The school controls them, there are registration implications with the IB, and the window narrows as the first year goes on. Term one is uncomfortable; term three is expensive.

The two switches are not symmetrical. Moving down to ab initio from French B means a student has partial knowledge and now needs it systematised rather than extended, which is usually fast. Moving up from ab initio to French B SL means a genuine content gap, broader vocabulary and a longer written task, and it needs a term of concentrated work. Anyone who tells you either switch is painless has not supervised one.

What tutoring can do here is produce evidence for the conversation. A timed task at both course lengths, a listening attempt, a short oral sample, all marked against the published criteria, give the DP coordinator something concrete. The decision is the school's and we would not pretend otherwise, but a school asked to decide on evidence decides faster and more accurately than one asked to decide on a parent's impression. Ask for the deadline too. Every school has an internal cut-off for level changes that sits well before the IB's own, and knowing that date turns a vague worry into a scheduling problem with an answer.

08

What a rare specialism costs, and what the money buys

Published UAE tutoring rates are mostly quoted for Dubai, and they describe a wide market rather than a single price. The table below sets out the bands with the provider who published each figure, because a rate with no source attached is not information. These are market figures from those providers at the dates they published them, not IB Gram's price list, and a beginner language specialism tends to sit in the upper half of the online band simply because fewer tutors have taught the course.

What moves the number is worth naming plainly. Level and specialism matter most: a tutor who has prepared the ab initio visual-stimulus oral is scarcer than a general French tutor and prices accordingly. Session length and frequency matter next, and two half-hours a week can cost more administratively than one hour while being better for a beginner. Proximity to the internal oral deadline tightens availability across the emirate and firms rates up every year.

Context helps too. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package, which is the sort of anchor worth holding when weighing a tutoring budget against a school fee. Abu Dhabi fee regulation sits with its own authority and works differently, so check your own school's position rather than reading Dubai's across. Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

The mainland and southern communities generate most of our beginner-language enquiries in this emirate, largely because school runs there are long and a reliable fixed weekly slot is hard to arrange any other way.

Shakhbout City

A long run to the island schools and a moderate one to the Khalifa City cluster. Families here commonly want a single fixed weekday hour with no travel variable attached, which is the format that holds for a full term.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Students here attend schools spread across the mainland, so siblings often finish at different times. Staggered half-hour starts work better than one family slot, and online delivery is what makes that practical at all.

Al Reef

Close to the airport corridor with a long commute in both directions. Beginner language work suits short frequent sessions, and two half-hours a week here often beats one hour fitted around a late bus.

Al Shamkha

A growing community with newer schools and a cohort that includes many recent arrivals. Placement decisions are being made quickly here, which is exactly when a short written diagnostic earns its keep.

Al Nahyan and Al Wahda

Central, well served by schools, and short runs in most directions. The constraint is competing activities rather than distance, so the late-afternoon slot fills fast and the weekend review session is often the easier booking.

Masdar City

A small residential community with a largely professional, multilingual population. Beginner French students here frequently already speak two languages, which helps with sound discrimination and with learning grammar as a system.

Al Ghadeer and Al Samha

On the Dubai side of the emirate boundary, with school runs that can cross it. Online delivery removes the question entirely, which matters more here than in any other part of Abu Dhabi.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

French-curriculum provision in the city

Students leaving a French-curriculum school are not ab initio candidates, and occasionally a family hopes otherwise. The useful conversation there is about French B or French A rather than the beginner route, and it is better had early.

  • Lycee Louis Massignon Abu Dhabi

Mainland and southern school communities

IB and British schools serving Khalifa City, Al Raha, Shakhbout City and the newer southern communities. Ab initio groups here are small, mixed in ability, and often taught in a shared block with another language level.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi

Al Reem Island and Bloom Gardens

A high proportion of students arriving mid-year from other systems, which is the group whose prior language study is hardest for a school to assess from paperwork alone. A diagnostic before the placement form is submitted is worth the twenty minutes.

  • Repton Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Schools are named as context for families in the emirate. IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and claims none.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the prior-study history, not just the year group

Tell us what French your child has actually been taught: which years, how often, whether anything was graded. That history is what decides the eligibility conversation with the school, and it also decides whether the first month is true beginner work or systematising partial knowledge. A sentence about the next school deadline helps us order the plan.

  2. 02

A free diagnostic inside the trial lesson

One lesson, free, no card details and no obligation. Ten words read aloud, one verb conjugated, four written sentences, three questions on a slow clip. Twenty minutes produces evidence you can take to the DP coordinator, and you keep it whatever you decide about booking afterwards.

  3. 03

Mechanics in the first term, measured at checkpoints

Sound-to-spelling mapping, gender and the article system, the present tense and a retrievable vocabulary base. Checkpoints at weeks two, six and twelve record the four ledger measures the same way each time, so what you read in December can be compared with what you read in October.

  4. 04

Themes and text types in DP1's second half

Once the mechanics stop consuming attention, coverage widens across the prescribed themes and two or three text types are taught to checklist level. The fortnightly timed task continues throughout, marked against the published criteria with the criterion letter beside each comment.

  5. 05

The oral block, and honesty about availability

A focused run of sessions before the school's internal recording window. French ab initio is a small specialism and availability tightens as those windows cluster across the emirate. If nobody who has taught this course is free, we will give you a date rather than substitute a general French tutor and hope it passes unnoticed.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The eligibility question answered before you pay anything

Most families arrive unsure whether their child can even take this course. The diagnostic in the free trial produces evidence for the school rather than an opinion, and if the honest answer is French B we will say so and tell you what that changes about the tutoring.

Numbers instead of adjectives

Four measures, taken the same way at fixed checkpoints: words retrieved cold, verb patterns controlled, words written in ten minutes, seconds of unscripted speech. A ledger you can read without speaking French, and a document worth taking to a parents evening.

Frequency over length for beginners

Two half-hours a week usually beats one hour for a true beginner, because retrieval spaced across days is what makes vocabulary and verb patterns stick. We will recommend the shape that suits the stage your child is at rather than the one that is simplest to schedule.

Online, and said so plainly

Lessons are one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run in-home visits in Abu Dhabi, and this page says so rather than letting you discover it after booking. The benefit is reach: a Al Shamkha family gets a specialist, not the nearest available French speaker.

Sourced figures and no claimed approvals

Every AED figure on this page carries the provider who published it. IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB or from any UAE regulator and claims none. Where a fact is unverified - any specific IB session date, for instance - the page tells you to check the official source.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Who is actually eligible to take IB French ab initio?+

Ab initio is intended for students beginning the language, and your child's school decides whether a particular student qualifies. In practice schools look at taught study rather than casual exposure: years in a timetabled French class, whether work was assessed, and what the student can currently do. A term of primary French years ago is usually treated as exposure. Two years of secondary French with graded reports usually is not. Arrive at that conversation with a short diagnostic in hand and it becomes a factual discussion rather than a negotiation.

My child had two years of French in Years 7 and 8 and remembers almost nothing. Can they start from scratch?+

This is the grey zone, and the school owns the decision. Taught study exists on paper, so some schools will say French B, while others will accept that nothing was retained and place the student in ab initio. What settles it quickly is evidence of current capability: reading words aloud, conjugating one regular verb, writing four sentences, answering questions on a slow clip. If the diagnostic shows almost no retained grammar, say so with the evidence attached rather than asserting that the French has been forgotten.

Is French ab initio an easier subject than French B?+

It is a narrower course rather than a soft one. The vocabulary domain has edges, the written tasks are shorter, and the oral works from a visual stimulus rather than a literary extract. What it demands in exchange is controlled accuracy: marks come from doing simple things correctly, so a student who reaches beyond their secure range loses more than they gain. Students who treat it as an easy option and coast tend to find the listening paper and the conversation section of the oral unforgiving in DP2.

Can an ab initio student reach the top of the grade scale?+

The full grade range is available in ab initio as in any Diploma subject, and the grade reflects performance against that course's criteria. Nobody can promise a particular grade in this subject or any other, and a tutor who does should concern you. What is reliably achievable is removing avoidable losses: conventions marks on Paper 1, the second hearing on listening, the interaction section of the oral. Those are the pieces where beginners most often leave marks behind, and they are teachable within a term.

How does the ab initio oral differ from the French B oral?+

Both start from a visual stimulus at Standard Level, but the expectations differ in scope. The ab initio task asks a beginner to describe the image, connect it to a prescribed theme and to life in a French-speaking context, and then hold a conversation, with marks for interaction specifically. French B assumes a much broader base and a longer, more analytical exchange, and at Higher Level the stimulus is replaced by an extract from a literary work entirely. Preparing for one does not prepare a student for the other.

How much vocabulary does a French ab initio student actually need?+

Less than families fear, and it has to be retrievable rather than merely covered. The prescribed themes and their topics define a finite domain, which is why a beginner can hold the whole territory in view by mid-DP1 in a way a French B student cannot. The useful measure is words retrieved cold in two minutes, tested rather than reviewed. Thirty words taught and not retrieved a week later are worth nothing, so we count retrieval at the start of each session and reteach what did not come back.

What does the ab initio written paper ask a beginner to produce?+

Written production in prescribed text types, worth a quarter of the grade. The current subject guide held by your child's school sets out the number of tasks and the word ranges, and those are the figures to work from rather than anything a tutoring site states. What matters for preparation is that text type carries marks in its own right: a note, a message, a short letter and a blog entry each have expectations about opening, closing and who is addressed, and beginners routinely produce undifferentiated prose and lose those marks unknowingly.

Can my child move from French B down to ab initio partway through DP1?+

Sometimes, and earlier is far better. The school controls the change and there are IB registration implications, so the window narrows as the first year progresses. The practical advantage of moving down is that the student already has partial knowledge which now needs systematising rather than extending, and that is usually quick work. Bring marked evidence to the conversation - a timed task, a listening attempt, a short oral sample against the published criteria - because a school deciding on evidence decides faster and more accurately.

Does taking a beginner language limit university options later?+

A language acquisition grade contributes to the Diploma total that universities read, and most courses do not distinguish between ab initio and language B when they state requirements. Some specific programmes, particularly modern languages degrees, do set their own expectations, so check the individual course page rather than relying on a general answer. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency, the British-track rules are published but no IB points figure has been read on an official Ministry source for this page, so verify that on moe.gov.ae.

What does a French ab initio tutor charge per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published UAE rates are mostly quoted for Dubai and describe a wide market. Tutopiya advertises from about AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end. Unitors lists IB tutoring from around AED 200, TutorChase quotes about AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts specialist exam-year support at roughly AED 200 to 450 and above. A beginner-language specialism sits in the upper half of the online band because fewer tutors have taught the course. Those are their figures, not our price list.

How often should a true beginner have lessons?+

Two half-hours a week generally beats one hour at the start, because sound-to-spelling mapping, verb patterns and vocabulary all depend on retrieval spaced across days rather than massed in one sitting. A thirty-minute session also survives a long Abu Dhabi school run far better than a sixty-minute one. Once the mechanics are secure, usually around week twelve, a single weekly hour with a fortnightly measured checkpoint works well and is easier to protect through activity season.

What should I expect to see by the end of DP1?+

For a student working an hour a week with homework between sessions, a realistic end-of-DP1 picture is a complete Paper 1 task in a known text type with conventions in place, roughly sixty to ninety words produced in ten minutes of timed writing with agreement mostly intact, and thirty to sixty seconds of unscripted speech before a stall. Those are indicative figures rather than promises, and they vary with the rest of the Diploma load. The direction across checkpoints matters more than any single number.

Is French ab initio offered at Higher Level anywhere?+

No. Ab initio courses in the Diploma exist at Standard Level only, which is a design feature rather than an oversight: the course assumes a beginner, and a Higher Level beginner course would not be coherent. A student wanting a Higher Level language acquisition subject takes a language B course at HL, which assumes genuine previous experience and adds literary works. For most Diploma students this is not a constraint, because the Higher Level requirement is about the number of subjects overall rather than which ones.

Can lessons be timed around a long mainland school run?+

Yes, and this is where online delivery earns its place. Families in Shakhbout City, Al Shamkha and Al Reef often finish the school run late and unpredictably, so a fixed slot with no travel variable attached is the only arrangement that holds for a full term. Shorter, more frequent sessions survive a late bus better than one long one. During Ramadan school hours shorten and sessions usually move to a post-iftar slot for the month before returning to the normal pattern.

What is a tutor allowed to do with work my child will submit for assessment?+

Teach, question, model and give feedback - nothing more. A tutor may rehearse the oral against unfamiliar images, mark practice tasks to the published criteria and explain the descriptors, and build a vocabulary list from the student's own errors. A tutor may not attend the assessed recording, supply content for the student to reproduce in it, or shape assessed written work into something the student could not have produced alone. We say this to the student in the first lesson, because stating it plainly is more useful than assuming it.

Settle the eligibility question first

If you are not yet sure whether your child belongs in French ab initio or French B, that is the thing to resolve before anything else, and twenty minutes of diagnostic evidence resolves it better than a conversation. The trial lesson is free, takes no card details and carries no obligation, and the diagnostic is yours to take to the DP coordinator whatever you decide next. Tell us what French your child has actually been taught, which school they attend, and when the placement form is due, and we will work backwards from that.
