Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry 4CH1 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An edexcel IGCSE chemistry 4ch1 tutor in Abu Dhabi earns their fee in the gap between understanding a reaction and being credited for it. Chemistry is marked in steps, so a student can reason correctly and still collect two marks out of five. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and work line by line through what a published Pearson mark scheme actually pays for.

  • Lessons one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • Calculations audited step by step against the published mark scheme
  • A free trial lesson before payment, with no card details taken
  • A different tutor at no extra charge if the first match is wrong

Why a chemistry student who understands the reaction still loses the marks

Chemistry is the subject where a parent is most likely to be told that the child understands it. Teachers say so, the child says so, and the evidence in the exercise book agrees. Then a mock comes back at 94 out of 180 and nobody can explain the distance between the two. The explanation is almost always the same, and it is not about understanding. Chemistry papers award marks in steps, and a student who arrives at the right conclusion by a route the scheme does not recognise collects the final mark and loses the three before it.

That is a diagnosable problem rather than a vague one. Take a standard five-mark calculation: convert a mass to moles, use the equation to find a mole ratio, convert back to a mass or a volume, apply a concentration or a gas-volume relationship, then round and attach a unit. Each of those is a credited step. A student who does the whole thing on a calculator and writes a single number has told the marker nothing and can only score for the answer. The same student, shown a mark scheme and asked to lay out five lines, will often score four of the five on a question they previously scored one on. No new chemistry has been learned.

So the argument of this page is narrow. What a chemistry tutor should be doing in week one is not re-teaching bonding. It is taking a marked 4CH1 script and sorting every lost mark into one of four bins: a step never written down, a step written wrongly, a unit or significant-figure error at the end, and genuine content that is not known. Those four bins lead to four different plans, and three of them are much faster than the fourth. A family that pays for content re-teaching when the real problem is step presentation pays for a term of work that was never needed.

There is a second reason chemistry rewards this approach more than its sibling sciences. The 4CH1 specification splits into four sections, and the first one, principles of chemistry, contains the quantitative spine that the other three keep borrowing. Moles, equations, concentration, gas volumes, relative formula mass and percentage yield all live there. A weakness in that section does not stay in that section; it reappears in every titration question in physical chemistry and every yield question in organic chemistry. Fix it once and the marks move in three places at the same time, which is why it is the one part of the course worth buying hours for twice.

Lessons for Abu Dhabi families run online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; a tutor arriving at a residence is a service we operate only in India. For a step-marked subject this is a straightforward advantage rather than a compromise, because the shared screen is where the steps get written, marked and rewritten in the same hour, and the student can see the scheme's wording beside their own.

What follows is the detail: where the steps sit in a 4CH1 calculation, what each specification section actually tests, the ion and gas tests that are lost in the wording rather than the chemistry, the fortnightly record a parent receives, what this costs in Abu Dhabi against published market figures, what ADEK and the MoHRE permit mean for whoever teaches your child, and the firm limit on what a tutor may do with work a school will assess.

At a glance

  • Four specification sections, two written papers, 180 marks, no coursework
  • Calculations are credited in steps, so a correct answer can still score one mark
  • Section 1 principles carries the arithmetic every other section reuses
  • Observation and conclusion are separate marks in a test question, and students merge them
  • Delivered one-to-one over live video, never at an Abu Dhabi address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry is a two-year course where the damage is usually done in one term and discovered in another. The stages below are the points at which an Abu Dhabi family can act, and what evidence exists at each one.

KS3Ages 11-14 - Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 Science

Chemistry at this stage is particle diagrams, simple word equations and a first encounter with the periodic table. The content barely matters later; two habits do. Writing a balanced equation before attempting any number, and carrying units through a calculation rather than adding them at the end. A Year 9 student who has never been required to show a step will not start showing one in Year 10 unaided.

Abu Dhabi schools decide between separate sciences and Science Double Award at the end of Year 9, often on a single internal paper. Chemistry is the subject where that decision bites hardest, because single-award 4CH1 goes considerably deeper into quantitative work than the double-award route. Ask the head of science which route the current Year 9 cohort was placed into and what the placement was based on.

4CH1 Y10Ages 14-15 - Year 10

International GCSE Chemistry, first year

Principles of chemistry and most of inorganic chemistry are normally taught in Year 10, which puts the mole arithmetic in front of a student who has not yet met Higher tier maths rearrangement. This is the cheapest moment in the whole course to intervene, and the one families almost never use, because Year 10 reports rarely look alarming enough to prompt it.

Most Abu Dhabi schools set an end-of-Year-10 internal paper from released Pearson questions. That script is the single most useful document available before the examination year, and it is far easier to obtain in June than in January when departments are marking mocks. Ask for it by name rather than asking for a progress update.

4CH1 Y11Ages 15-16 - Year 11

International GCSE Chemistry, examination year

Physical chemistry and organic chemistry arrive in Year 11, with organic frequently taught in the final term before the series. The predictable result in marked scripts is competent inorganic work, patchy physical chemistry where the arithmetic is reused, and organic answers that name a functional group correctly and then describe the reaction in words a scheme does not credit.

Mock windows in Abu Dhabi cluster in November and January, and Pearson entry deadlines sit months ahead of the exam window itself. A January mock script is the last complete evidence available before entries are confirmed, which makes it the right document for deciding between a full push and a targeted repair of two sections.

ResitPost-Year 11 and transfers

November series and private candidates

Pearson International GCSE runs a May/June series and a November series, so a chemistry grade can be improved without repeating a school year. A resit is a different job from a first attempt because the component marks already form a diagnosis, and the work is to rebuild one or two specification sections properly rather than to revisit all four at speed.

A resit candidate needs an entry through a centre, and the entry deadline governs everything that follows. Published Pearson milestones place final entries months before the exam window, so the resit decision gets made long before revision begins. Confirm live dates on qualifications.pearson.com and with the exams officer at the centre taking the entry.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry rarely travels alone, and what it is paired with changes what a weekly hour has to fix. The list below covers the subjects Abu Dhabi 4CH1 students most often sit alongside it and the specific interference each creates.

Chemistry (4CH1)

Single award - Years 10-11

The subject of this page. Four specification sections, two written papers, 180 marks, untiered and graded 9 to 1, with no coursework. Marked scripts lose most heavily on unwritten calculation steps, on test questions where observation and conclusion are merged into one sentence, and on organic reactions described rather than named.

Mathematics A (4MA1)

Higher tier - Years 10-11

The arithmetic chemistry runs on. Ratio, rearrangement, standard form, percentage change and significant figures all appear in both subjects. A student losing chemistry marks on the mole almost always has a matching gap in Higher tier maths, and one repair fixes two subjects.

Biology (4BI1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Shares the science option block and competes for the same revision hours. Biology rewards precise written explanation and chemistry rewards precise quantity, so a strong biologist weak in chemistry usually has the vocabulary and lacks the habit of showing a numerical route.

Physics (4PH1)

Single award - Years 10-11

The third separate science and the closest in arithmetic demand. Unit conversion, standard form and formula rearrangement recur in both. Students who treat the two as unrelated pay twice for one weakness, and a shared drill on units usually lifts both sets of marks.

Science Double Award (4SD0)

Double award - Years 10-11

The alternative route, covering all three sciences for two grades. Chemistry content is reduced and the quantitative demand is lighter. Confirming which route your child is on is the first question we ask, because in Abu Dhabi households with two children the answer is sometimes different for each.

Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Taken by students heading towards A-Level sciences. A 4PM1 student finds chemistry calculation easy, which hides a different weakness: the written explanation marks in inorganic and organic questions, where a precise answer in words is worth as much as a number.

English Language A (4EA1)

Years 10-11

Relevant to chemistry through the extended-response marks. A student who writes loosely writes loosely in a six-mark chemistry explanation, and markers pay for sequence and precision in both subjects. Command-word work transfers between them more than most families expect.

Arabic as an additional language

Mandatory alongside the licensed curriculum

Required in UAE private schools whatever international curriculum the school is licensed to teach, and timetabled inside the school day. Its relevance to a chemistry plan is scheduling arithmetic: it occupies periods that might otherwise be free and shapes where a weekly session can sit.

Islamic Education and Social Studies

Mandatory, organised by group

Also required in UAE private schools, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students under published guidance. Again the chemistry relevance is timetable rather than content: these are fixed periods and a realistic weekly slot has to work around them.

Business (4BS1)

Years 10-11

A common pairing for students who intend to leave science after Year 11. It changes the brief rather than the chemistry: the aim becomes a secure pass that protects the five-subject count for equivalency and university applications, which is a narrower and cheaper piece of work than a push for a 9.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every 4CH1 request that reaches us from Abu Dhabi. The difference between them is how much marked calculation work happens outside the live hour, which is what turns a lesson into a record.

Weekly one-to-one with a marked calculation set

One live session a week on Gulf Standard Time, with a set of calculation or test-based questions attempted in between and marked step by step against the published scheme. The session opens on the step audit and spends the rest of the hour on whichever bin took the most marks. Over a term this leaves a dated record showing whether step marks are being earned.

  • 60 or 90 minutes in a fixed weekly slot
  • One marked question set per week in exam term
  • Losses sorted into step, unit, and content bins
  • Session recording available on request

Section repair block

A short dated block of four to eight sessions aimed at one specification section, usually principles of chemistry or organic chemistry, booked after a marked script has been read. The scope is written down before the block opens and the block closes with a timed re-attempt at the question types that failed. Suited to a family who wants defined work rather than an open arrangement.

  • One section named in writing before the first session
  • Scope taken from the marked script, not from a syllabus list
  • Closes with a timed re-attempt at the failing question types
  • No rolling commitment once the block ends

Paired sessions for two students on the same entry

Two students from the same Abu Dhabi school and the same 4CH1 cohort can share a session at a lower cost each. It works where both are within a grade of one another and both bring marked work. It stops working the moment one needs the mole arithmetic rebuilt while the other needs organic naming, and we say so before the first session rather than after the fifth.

  • Same specification code and same series for both
  • Lower cost per student than one-to-one
  • Marking returned separately to each family
  • We advise against it where the gap exceeds one grade

01

Where the steps go in a 4CH1 calculation, and what each one is worth

  • Step never written: the most common and the fastest to fix
  • Step written wrongly: a genuine content gap, usually in one section
  • Unit or significant-figure error: a single recurring drill
  • Answer only, no working: full marks impossible even when correct

A chemistry calculation is not marked as right or wrong. It is marked as a sequence, and the scheme releases credit at each point where a candidate demonstrates a specific move. This is why two students with the same final answer can score two marks apart, and why a student who gets the answer wrong can still collect most of the marks available. Families find this counter-intuitive, and students find it worse: a child who has been told all year that chemistry is about understanding reactions is being assessed, in a large part of the paper, on whether they wrote four lines in a recognisable order.

The moves themselves are finite. Convert a given mass or volume into moles. Read the balanced equation for a ratio. Apply the ratio. Convert back into the quantity the question asked for. Handle a concentration, a gas volume at room conditions, a percentage yield or a limiting reagent where one is involved. Round sensibly and write the unit. Any one of those can be the single missing line that costs three marks, and in a marked script the missing line is visible immediately to someone who knows where to look.

The practical consequence for tutoring is a change of order. The first session with a new 4CH1 student does not start with bonding or with the periodic table; it starts with three calculations from a released paper, worked on a shared screen with every line written out, and then marked against the scheme while the student watches. That hour usually tells a parent more than a term of school reports, because it separates the student who cannot do the chemistry from the far more common student who can do it and is not being paid for it.

The table below sets out the step sequence and the marks at risk at each stage. The figures describe where credit typically sits in a multi-mark quantitative question rather than any particular paper, and the mark schemes themselves are published on qualifications.pearson.com after each series.

THE STEP SEQUENCE IN A MULTI-MARK 4CH1 CALCULATION AND WHERE CREDIT SITS

02

The four sections of 4CH1 and what each one actually tests

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry is assessed by two written papers with no coursework and no separately assessed practical. Paper 1C runs for two hours and Paper 2C for one hour fifteen minutes, with 180 marks between them, and the qualification is untiered and graded 9 to 1. Paper 2C assesses the content the specification flags as examined only on the second paper, which is why a candidate who revises evenly across the whole course without checking the split arrives under-prepared for the shorter sitting. Confirm component details for your child's series against the specification on qualifications.pearson.com.

The more useful division for planning is the specification's own: four sections, each with a distinct failure mode. Principles of chemistry holds states of matter, atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, and the entire quantitative apparatus of moles, equations, concentration and gas volumes. Inorganic chemistry covers groups, reactivity, gases, and the tests whose marks live in precise wording. Physical chemistry covers rates, energetics, reversible reactions and equilibrium, and reuses the arithmetic from section one. Organic chemistry covers homologous series, reaction types, polymers and the naming conventions that students approximate and schemes do not.

Read that way, a marked script tells you which section to buy hours for. Loss concentrated in principles means the spine is weak and the loss is also quietly present in the other three sections, which makes it the most valuable repair in the course. Loss in inorganic usually means the chemistry is known and the wording is not. Loss in physical chemistry is frequently just the principles weakness showing up again in a titration or a rate calculation. Loss in organic almost always reflects teaching order rather than ability, because organic tends to be taught last and revised least.

The table maps each section to where it is examined and to the loss it generates in marked work.

4CH1 SPECIFICATION SECTIONS - WHAT EACH TESTS AND HOW IT FAILS

Principles of chemistryStates of matter, atomic structure, periodic table, bonding, moles, equations, concentration, gas volumesQuantitative reasoning written as a visible sequenceUnwritten steps and missing units across the whole paperThe arithmetic is reused by the other three sections, so one repair moves marks in three places

Physical chemistryRates of reaction, energetics, reversible reactions and equilibriumApplying section one arithmetic to a new contextTitration and rate calculations failing for mole-level reasonsDiagnosing it correctly stops a family paying to re-teach content that is not the problem

03

The mole is one skill, and it is most of the quantitative grade

If a single idea decides a 4CH1 grade it is the mole, and the reason is structural rather than conceptual. A mole question is not one question type. It is the gateway to titration calculations, to percentage yield, to gas volumes at room temperature and pressure, to empirical formula work, to concentration conversions between grams per cubic decimetre and moles per cubic decimetre, and to limiting reagent reasoning. A student who is shaky here is not shaky in one topic. They are shaky in a diagonal line that cuts through three of the four specification sections.

What makes the diagnosis tricky is that the symptom looks like carelessness. A student divides when they should multiply, or converts cubic centimetres to cubic decimetres by the wrong factor, and the result reads like a slip. Seen across six marked questions, the same slip is a structure problem: the student is pattern-matching to a remembered example instead of reasoning from the quantity they have to the quantity they want. The cure is unglamorous. Every calculation starts by writing down what is given with its unit, what is wanted with its unit, and the route between them, until the route is written without prompting.

This is also where the honest version of session arithmetic matters. Rebuilding mole reasoning properly takes more than one hour and fewer than a term. In practice it tends to absorb a handful of sessions, with a five-minute drill attached to every subsequent lesson until the error stops recurring in marked work. We would rather tell a family that than sell a package on the promise that one lesson fixes it, and the marked record is what shows whether it worked. A student whose unit errors have disappeared from three consecutive marked sets has genuinely fixed something.

The section also explains why we resist starting a new 4CH1 student on whichever topic the school is currently teaching. Following the school's sequence feels responsive and usually spends the hour on content the student will meet again in class anyway. Starting on the quantitative spine spends the hour on something nobody in the school day has time to rebuild.

04

Observation, conclusion, and the inorganic marks lost in the wording

Inorganic chemistry is where 4CH1 candidates lose the marks they are most annoyed about, because they knew the answer. A test question typically asks what a candidate would see and what that tells them, and those are two separate credits. A student who writes that the solution turns blue so copper is present has not written the two-part answer; a student who writes a pale blue precipitate forms with sodium hydroxide solution, indicating copper two ions, has. The chemistry is identical. One version collects both marks and the other collects one.

The pattern repeats across the familiar tests. Flame tests, where a colour has to be named precisely rather than approximately. Precipitate tests with sodium hydroxide, where the colour and the word precipitate both matter, and where a precipitate that redissolves in excess is a separate observation. Halide tests with silver nitrate, where cream and pale yellow are distinguishable answers. Gas tests, where limewater turning milky, a splint relighting, or damp red litmus turning blue are the observations and the gas identity is the conclusion. Sulfate tests with barium chloride and acid. In every case the mark scheme separates what is seen from what is deduced.

Teaching this online is efficient because the examined skill is written. The student types or writes the two-part answer, the scheme's wording goes on the screen beside it, and the difference is visible rather than explained. A session can work through eight test questions in half an hour, and in marked work the improvement shows up quickly, which makes inorganic a sensible place to start a block when a family needs early evidence that the arrangement is doing something. It is the least glamorous section of the course and the cheapest per mark recovered.

The table lists the tests most often examined, with the answer that loses the mark alongside the answer that earns it.

4CH1 TEST QUESTIONS - OBSERVATION AND CONCLUSION AS SEPARATE MARKS

05

The fortnightly review, and the decision it is supposed to force

Weekly marking produces data. A review is what turns it into a decision. Every fortnight on a continuing arrangement, the tutor sends a short note built on the marked work rather than on impressions, and the note exists to force one of four choices: continue as planned, change the section being worked on, change the format, or stop. A review that recommends continuing every time is not a review, and a parent should be suspicious of one.

What the note contains is deliberately plain. The marked sets attached, the raw marks on each, the proportion of loss sitting in each of the four bins, and one sentence on what changed. A parent who knows no chemistry should be able to read it in two minutes and tell whether step marks are being earned. The usual trajectory is that step and unit losses fall first, within three or four marked sets, because they are presentation problems; content gains arrive more slowly because a section genuinely has to be rebuilt.

The reason to write the review as a decision point rather than a summary is that tutoring arrangements drift. A family books because of a mock, the mock passes, the sessions continue, and nobody revisits whether the original brief still applies. Six weeks later the student is being taught whatever the school taught that week, which is a service but not the one that was bought. A fortnightly note that names the section being worked on makes that drift visible to everyone, including the tutor.

The table sets out the four review points in a typical half-term block and what each one is for.

What a 4CH1 plan costs in Abu Dhabi, in context

Parents in Abu Dhabi searching for a chemistry tutor usually mean someone who will arrive at the door, and the market for that is real. Published UAE figures put in-home one-to-one tuition at roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel included, and advertised in-home monthly packages run around AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Bestimate's 2026 rate table gives AED 180 to 350 for in-home visits; independent home tutors are quoted up to AED 500.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, and nothing here should be read as an offer to send anyone to a residence in the emirate. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; visiting a UAE address is a service we run only in India. In a step-marked subject the online format does specific work rather than merely saving travel. The scheme and the student's own lines sit side by side on a shared screen, the marking happens where the student can watch it, and the time a visiting tutor would spend in a car is the time this arrangement spends marking.

The figures below are published market rates from the named sources, quoted as the market and dated to October 2026, not as an IB Gram price list. Three of the six competitor pages reviewed for this project publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, a currency UAE families do not transact in. Our own arrangement starts with one free trial lesson, with no card details taken; what a weekly plan costs after that depends on session length and frequency, which is a conversation rather than a published table.

The context column is the part families find most useful. A chemistry grade is one component of a school year that already costs a great deal, and KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27 under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Abu Dhabi fee approvals sit with ADEK rather than KHDA, so the comparison is indicative rather than transferable, but the scale is the point: tutoring is usually a small fraction of the annual cost of the schooling it is protecting.

ADEK, the permit, and what a parent can verify without taking anyone's word

Most pages written for UAE parents mention a regulator once and move on. The useful version tells you what you can check yourself. Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which the UAE government's own guidance describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and which publishes its own inspection ratings. That means a school's rating is a matter of public record, and so is the question of whether a school exists, which is worth knowing because at least one competitor page reviewed for this project lists a school that appears not to exist.

Private tuition is governed separately. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page for the permit lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the ministry's app, website and e-services system. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule has been published, any specific figure quoted to you is unverified.

There is an Abu Dhabi-specific point families should know. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct is reported to bar serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school; verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. The practical reading is to avoid hiring your child's own chemistry teacher, which also removes any awkwardness about who marks internal assessments.

IB Gram holds no permit, licence, accreditation or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, Pearson or any examination board, and makes no claim to any. We are a matching platform. The two questions worth asking any tutor, whether found through us or elsewhere, are whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition permit and whether their current employment permits private tutoring. A tutor who cannot answer those has answered them.

4CH1 carries no coursework, which removes the most common academic-honesty trap in international qualifications. It leaves others. A tutor may teach, demonstrate, set work and mark it against a published scheme. A tutor may not complete a piece of work that the school will treat as the student's own, and that includes collected homework, internal mock papers taken home and any task feeding a predicted grade. The line is clear and the consequence of crossing it falls on the student, not the tutor. One essay mill in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright; that is an integrity breach we will not imitate in any subject.

A second limit covers materials. Pearson's past papers, mark schemes, examiner reports and specifications are the board's copyright and are published on the board's own site, with recent series released to centres under conditions. A tutor may reference them, work from them live and point you to the official page. A tutor should not be handing over a drive folder of reproduced papers, and anyone offering unreleased material is offering something that would make your child a malpractice case. Every reference on this page points at qualifications.pearson.com for that reason.

The newest version of this problem arrives as a chatbot. A chemistry explanation generated in thirty seconds reads plausibly, uses the right vocabulary and is frequently wrong in a way a Year 11 student cannot detect, particularly on mechanisms, equilibrium reasoning and anything involving a mole ratio. Where a student has clearly submitted generated text, the useful response is not a lecture; it is to put the generated answer and the mark scheme side by side and let the student find the two sentences that would score nothing. That is a lesson worth having, and it is one of the better uses of a marked-script hour.

The last limit is about claims. No tutor, however many 4CH1 scripts they have marked, can guarantee a grade, and a page promising a 9 is selling something it cannot deliver. What can be committed to is process: marking against the published scheme, an honest record including when it is flat, and being told when the arrangement is not working rather than invoiced through another term.

Joining in January, and what happens when no 4CH1 specialist is free

The most common moment a chemistry enquiry arrives in Abu Dhabi is the week after January mocks, which is also the week every other family in the emirate has the same idea. Two things follow. The evening slots between 5pm and 8pm Gulf Standard Time fill first, and chemistry specialists are a narrower pool than maths tutors. So here is the position before you enquire rather than after.

When the specialist who matches the specification has nothing in the window you want, there are three honest answers. A different time, usually a weekend morning, which for timed calculation work is better than a Tuesday at 7pm anyway. A different tutor, meaning a strong general science tutor who covers 4CH1 alongside 4BI1 and 4PH1, which fits a student who needs step presentation and arithmetic rather than organic depth. Or a wait with a date attached, which is occasionally the right answer and is always better than a placement that does not fit. What we will not do is say yes and then quietly drop the marking by week three.

A January start also changes the plan itself. There is no time to rebuild four sections, so the work becomes triage: the mock script names the section with the heaviest loss, the block takes that section and the step presentation problem together, and everything else is protected rather than improved. That is a smaller promise than families want to hear in January and it is the one that survives contact with the exam timetable.

Getting started is short. Send the last marked chemistry script and the series your child is entered for, we confirm the specification code and which paper carries the Paper-2-only content, and a free trial lesson follows with no card details taken. If the match is wrong after the trial or after the fourth session, we move the student at no extra charge and the marked record goes with them. Changing tutor once is common and is not a failure of the process.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi runs from the island out through the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor to the newer mainland communities, and the practical question for chemistry is when a student can sit down with a calculator and a clear head. The notes below are about that, not about scenery.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Short runs home from the long-established island schools, so an early evening calculation session holds through term. Households here often juggle two science students, and a fixed weekly slot protects the marking cycle better than a movable one.

Al Reem Island

Tower living, where lifts and parking swallow the end of a school run. A 5pm chemistry slot often begins with a student still in the car; 6.30pm starts on time and leaves room for a full titration calculation sequence.

Khalifa City

The largest group of Year 10 and 11 separate-science candidates in the emirate, and long bus runs. Weekend mornings are where a full timed section fits without being rushed, and that matters more in chemistry than in a subject with shorter questions.

Al Raha Beach and Al Zeina

Short journeys to the corridor schools but heavy after-school activity timetables. Chemistry here tends to land on Friday or Saturday, which suits timed paper work and gives the tutor less time to return marking before the next session.

Saadiyat Island

Quick to the island schools and slow to anywhere on the mainland. Students in this cluster often meet organic chemistry late in Year 11, so plans are built backwards from the mock rather than forwards from the start of the course.

Yas Island and Al Raha Gardens

Mixed island and mainland school destinations, so household timetables shift week to week. A recorded session matters here: a missed slot can be recovered without breaking the fortnightly review cycle.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Shamkha

Longer mainland journeys and a wide spread of schools. Sessions from 7pm are normal, and a 60-minute slot with one marked calculation set beats a 90-minute slot that opens with a tired student.

Al Bateen and the Corniche

Dense school provision within minutes of home, so activities rather than traffic set the limit. These are the households most likely to want two short sessions a week in the run-up to a mock, one for content and one timed.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and corniche schools

The emirate's oldest British-curriculum provision, with established separate-science entries and early mock calendars. Students we support in this cluster usually have a marked mock script already, which means the step audit can happen in the trial lesson rather than a fortnight later.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Al Muna Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City and the Al Raha corridor

Where most of the emirate's Year 11 chemistry entries sit, and where single-award and double-award students appear in the same families. The first question here is always which specification code a child is entered for, because the quantitative demand differs sharply between them.

  • Yasmina British Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy

Saadiyat, Yas and the newer communities

Newer schools with growing Year 11 cohorts and, in several cases, only one or two completed cycles of International GCSE science. Mock scripts exist but school grade history is thin, so plans here lean on released Pearson questions rather than on local precedent.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the last marked chemistry script

Not a description of the problem and not the report, but the paper itself, however poor the mark. If the school has not released it, ask the exams officer or head of science; most Abu Dhabi departments share mock scripts on request. Where nothing exists, the trial lesson generates one from three released calculations.

  2. 02

Sort the loss into the four bins

Every lost mark goes into one of four categories: step never written, step written wrongly, unit or significant-figure error, or genuine content gap. Three of those four are faster to repair than families expect, and knowing the split before paying for a term is the difference between a plan and a hope.

  3. 03

    Name one section in writing

Before the first paid session the block names one of the four specification sections and the question types it will target, together with what you receive each fortnight. A plan naming principles of chemistry and titration calculations is checkable; a plan promising to improve chemistry is not.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

One live session, no card details taken, with the tutor we think fits. It is working time rather than a sales call: three released calculations worked on a shared screen and marked step by step, which produces the audit whether or not you continue afterwards.

  5. 05

Read the fortnightly review and decide

Every two weeks a short note arrives with the marked sets attached, the raw marks, the split across the four bins and one sentence on what changed. It exists to force a decision: continue, change section, change format, or stop. We will say stop when the record says so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking at the level of the step, not the paper

A chemistry mark scheme releases credit line by line, so the useful unit of feedback is the line rather than the score. Every marked set comes back with the missing lines identified, which is what turns a vague instruction to show your working into something a student can actually do next week.

The quantitative spine before the current topic

We start on moles, equations and units rather than on whatever the school taught that week, because the school will teach that topic again and nobody in the school day has an hour to rebuild the arithmetic. It is the one repair that moves marks in three specification sections at once.

The specification code confirmed first

4CH1 is not Cambridge 0620, and single-award chemistry is not Science Double Award 4SD0. The paper structure, the Paper-2-only content and the entry deadline all follow from the code, and in Abu Dhabi households with two science students the answer is sometimes different for each child.

A review that can recommend stopping

The fortnightly note exists to force a decision, and one of the available decisions is to stop. A record that recommends continuing every single time is a record nobody is reading. Two flat sets early are normal; six are a signal, and you should hear it from us.

Availability stated before you enquire

Evening slots in Abu Dhabi fill in the weeks after January mocks, and chemistry specialists are a narrower pool than maths tutors. When the honest answer is a weekend morning or a two-week wait, that is the answer, rather than a placement with whoever happens to be free.

Figures that carry their source

Every AED figure on this page is a published market rate attributed to the provider who published it and dated to October 2026, not an IB Gram price. Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does an Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry 4CH1 tutor charge in Abu Dhabi?+

Published market rates run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online help, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an International GCSE specialist. Bestimate's 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and TutorChase publishes AED 270, with independent home tutors quoted to AED 500. Advertised packages include about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. Those are other providers' figures as published in October 2026, not ours; IB Gram starts with a free trial lesson and no card details.

Why does my child get part marks on chemistry calculations but never full marks?+

Because the scheme credits steps and your child is probably writing only the answer. A multi-mark calculation releases marks for converting a mass to moles, reading the ratio from a balanced equation, applying the ratio, converting back to the quantity asked for, and rounding with a unit. A single number on the line collects at most the answer mark. This is the most common finding in a first 4CH1 script audit and one of the fastest to repair, because no new chemistry has to be learned, only written down in a recognisable order.

Which of the four 4CH1 sections is worth tutoring first?+

Usually principles of chemistry, because it holds the moles, equations, concentration and gas-volume work that the other three sections keep borrowing. Loss there is never confined there: it reappears in titration questions in physical chemistry and yield questions in organic chemistry, so a family that repairs it sees marks move in three places. Inorganic chemistry is the exception worth taking first when a script shows the chemistry known and the wording imprecise, since those marks come back quickly and give early evidence that the arrangement is working.

How are practical skills assessed in 4CH1 when there is no practical exam?+

Through written questions on the two papers. There is no coursework and no separately assessed practical in Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry, so the whole grade comes from written work, but candidates are still asked to describe methods, identify variables, explain why a step was repeated, read a value from an apparatus diagram, or suggest an improvement. Those marks appear every series and are routinely dropped by students who have performed the experiments at school and never written about them in the form a scheme rewards. The experiments stay the school's job.

My child can describe a flame test but still loses the mark. Why?+

Almost always imprecision rather than ignorance. A flame test question separates the observation from the conclusion, and the observation has to name the colour exactly: lilac rather than purple, crimson rather than red, and so on. A student who writes that the flame changes colour so potassium is present has collapsed two credits into one sentence and will score one of them. The repair is wording practice against released schemes, which is quick work and some of the cheapest marks in the paper to recover.

When should an Abu Dhabi student start revising organic chemistry?+

Earlier than the school teaches it, if the goal is a high grade. Organic chemistry is commonly delivered in the final term of Year 11, which leaves little time between the teaching and the series. In marked scripts it shows up as correct chemistry written in approximate language: a reaction described rather than named, a homologous series pattern recognised but not stated. Because the content volume is modest and the losses are linguistic, organic responds well to a short block, and it is often the most recoverable section in a plan starting after January mocks.

Which chemistry specification is my child's Abu Dhabi school actually using?+

Ask the exams officer, or look at the top of any past paper the department has issued, where the code is printed. Pearson 4CH1 and Cambridge 0620 differ in paper structure, in how practical skills are examined and in entry deadlines, so revision aimed at the wrong one wastes real time. There is a second question inside the first: whether your child sits single-award chemistry or chemistry inside Science Double Award 4SD0, which examines reduced content with a lighter quantitative load. Check per child, since siblings are sometimes on different routes.

What does a fortnightly chemistry review actually contain?+

The marked question sets, the raw mark on each, the split of lost marks across the four bins we use, and one sentence on what changed. It should take a parent who knows no chemistry about two minutes to read and should end with a decision: continue on this section, move to the next, change the format, or stop. A review that recommends continuing on every occasion is not functioning as a review, and that is a reasonable thing to say to a tutor.

Does splitting a 4CH1 session between two students work?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking about because the cost per student drops. It works when both students are on the same specification and series, within about a grade of each other, and both bring marked work to each session. It stops working when one needs mole arithmetic rebuilt while the other needs organic naming, because the step audit that makes the session useful is individual. We would rather say that before the first session than discover it in week five, and marking is returned separately in any case.

Can an online lesson teach titration properly?+

It can teach the examined part of titration, which is the calculation and the method description rather than the manual technique. The marks in a titration question come from reading a burette value correctly, identifying concordant results, averaging them properly, converting volumes to cubic decimetres, applying the mole ratio from the balanced equation and reporting with a unit. All of that is written work and all of it sits better on a shared screen than on a bench. Handling the glassware remains the school laboratory's job, and the school does it.

How late is too late to start chemistry tutoring before the series?+

Six weeks is enough to repair one specification section and a step-presentation habit. Three weeks is enough to drill units, rounding and the two-part test answers, which is a real if modest number of marks. Under two weeks the useful work is exam-paper logistics rather than chemistry. What no block of any length can do is rebuild two years, and a tutor who implies otherwise has not read the script. A short block should name what it will not cover as clearly as what it will.

How can I check that a chemistry tutor is permitted to teach privately in the UAE?+

Ask directly whether they hold the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and whether their current employment allows private tutoring. The permit is granted free of charge for two years and MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, so cost is no excuse for not holding one. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount quoted to you as unverified.

My child used a chatbot for a chemistry homework answer. Is that a problem?+

It is a problem in two ways. Where a school will assess the work, submitting generated text is misrepresentation and the consequences land on the student. The quieter problem is accuracy: generated chemistry reads fluently and is frequently wrong on mechanisms, equilibrium reasoning and anything involving a mole ratio, in ways a Year 11 student cannot detect. A useful session puts the generated answer beside the published mark scheme and asks the student to find the sentences that would score nothing. That tends to settle the question better than a warning.

Which five subjects does the Ministry of Education count for British-track equivalency?+

The published rule asks for five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or grade 3, and states that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. The British track also requires one subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Chemistry counts as an ordinary subject within the five. One ranking competitor states six IGCSE subjects are needed, which does not match the published rule. Verify current requirements on moe.gov.ae before making decisions.

Can we start in January after a disappointing mock?+

Yes, and it is the most common starting point in Abu Dhabi, which is why evening slots fill in that fortnight. A January start changes the plan rather than the method: there is no time to rebuild four sections, so the mock script names the heaviest-loss section, the block takes that plus the step-presentation problem, and the rest of the course is protected rather than improved. If the specialist who fits has no evening slot, the honest options are a weekend morning, a general science tutor, or a short wait with a date on it.

How soon should a tutor tell us the chemistry plan is not working?+

By the week-six review at the latest, and in writing. Two flat marked sets early on are normal, because timed conditions and honest marking both pull a score down before lifting it. Six sets with no movement in either step marks or raw score mean the arrangement is wrong, and the record makes that visible without anyone needing to interpret it. At that point the tutor changes at no extra charge and the marked work transfers. Stopping is also a legitimate outcome and we would rather say so than invoice another term.

Send the calculation, not the grade

If you take one thing from this page, take the step audit. Find your child's last marked chemistry paper, look at a multi-mark calculation, and count how many lines are written. If the answer is one line, you already know what the first month of work is, and no new chemistry has to be learned to get those marks back. Book the free trial lesson, let the first hour produce the audit on three released calculations, and read the fortnightly review when it arrives. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
