Edexcel IGCSE Science Double Award 4SD0 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Hiring an Edexcel IGCSE Science Double Award 4SD0 tutor in Abu Dhabi raises a question no competing page answers: three sciences sit inside one qualification, so is that one tuition bill or three? This page publishes the dirham bands the Abu Dhabi market actually charges, with sources, explains which variables move the number, and sets out plan shapes that cover three subjects without tripling the cost. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, and the trial lesson is free.

  • Market AED bands published with the provider who quoted them
  • One plan covering three sciences, not three separate bookings
  • Free trial lesson before any payment, with no card details taken

What a Double Award actually costs to support, and why the quotes vary so much

Science Double Award is the qualification that breaks tutoring arithmetic. A parent in Al Reef or Mohammed Bin Zayed City looks at a report with three science teachers' comments and two predicted grades on it, asks three tutoring services for a price, and gets three answers that are not comparable because each has silently assumed something different. One has quoted for biology. One has quoted for three subjects at the single-award rate. One has quoted a monthly package and not said how many sessions it contains.

The structure is worth stating plainly before any money is discussed. Pearson's 4SD0 is examined by three written papers, one in biology, one in chemistry and one in physics, and it reports two International GCSE grades rather than three. It covers less of each science than the three single awards do, which is the whole point of it: it buys two science grades for roughly the timetable cost of two subjects instead of three. Confirm the current paper structure, durations and mark totals on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com, because Pearson revises its own documents and the centre teaches from that version, not from a summary.

That structure has a direct financial consequence. A Double Award student does not need three tutors. They need one science tutor who can read a mark scheme in all three papers and identify which of the three is actually costing the grade, plus occasional specialist cover for whichever science turns out to be the problem. The cheapest serious plan in this subject is diagnostic first and specialist second, and the most expensive mistake is booking three weekly hours in September because three sciences appear on the timetable.

Every dirham figure on this page is attributed. Three of the six most visible tutoring sites in this market publish no price at all, and two of the rest quote in US dollars, a currency UAE families do not pay in. The bands below come from providers and rate surveys that published them, with the format each applies to. They are the market, not IB Gram's price list. Our own number follows the free trial lesson, because until a tutor has seen a marked script nobody can honestly say how much marking the plan requires.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video with screen sharing and a shared whiteboard. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tuition is a service we run only in India. For a three-science qualification that turns out to matter financially as well as practically, because the published in-home bands in this emirate sit well above the online ones and the premium is travel the family funds. The comparison table further down costs both options over a term rather than per hour, which is the number that actually lands on a household budget.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Double Award sits in the middle of a route, and the money decisions are made at its edges. The three stages below are where Abu Dhabi families spend, and the earliest of them is by far the cheapest place to change an outcome.

KS3Ages 11-14 - Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 Science

Combined science taught as a rotation in most British-curriculum schools here, which means biology, chemistry and physics each appear for a term and then disappear. The Year 9 option decision, single awards or Double Award, is frequently made on one internal test taken at the end of that rotation. A term of support in Year 9 is the lowest-cost intervention available in the whole sequence.

In Abu Dhabi the option blocks are often set before the spring term, so a family wanting to influence the route has to act in the autumn. Changing which qualification a child is entered for costs a few sessions. Trying to compensate for the wrong route two years later costs a great deal more and rarely works.

4SD0Ages 14-16 - Years 10-11

Science Double Award

Three papers, two grades, graded on the 9 to 1 scale, with no coursework to submit. Students carry all three sciences through two years but at reduced depth compared with the single awards. The tuition spend concentrates in two windows: the first term of Year 10, when the habit of writing scientific answers is formed, and the final two terms of Year 11, when timed papers start producing real diagnostic information.

Abu Dhabi centres enter candidates in the May/June series and increasingly in November as well. Entry deadlines sit months before the papers and are set by the centre, not by the family, so a plan that assumes a November entry is still available in October is usually wrong. Ask the exams officer for the internal deadline in writing.

SINGLEUsually decided in Year 10

Moving to single-award sciences

Some students start on Double Award and transfer to single-award biology, chemistry or physics, typically because a post-16 plan needs the depth. The transfer is not free in teaching terms: the single awards carry content the Double Award does not, including material that appears only in the single-award papers, and that gap has to be closed before the transfer rather than after it.

Where a family is weighing this, the cost comparison to run is the handful of catch-up sessions now against two years of a post-16 course taken without the right prerequisite. Several Abu Dhabi schools will allow the move inside Year 10 but not later, so the question is time-limited and worth asking early.

POST16Ages 16-18 - Years 12-13

What a Double Award opens and closes

Two science grades at 9 to 1 satisfy a great many post-16 and university entry requirements, and for a student heading into business, humanities or social sciences the Double Award is often the sensible and cheaper choice. Where the plan involves International A Level sciences, medicine or engineering, individual course entry requirements should be read directly rather than assumed.

Check the published entry criteria of the specific sixth form or university in question, including UAE institutions, rather than relying on general advice. This is a prerequisite question with a documented answer, and no tutoring is required to resolve it; it costs one email to the admissions office.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A Double Award plan is priced by what it has to cover, so the list below is written in those terms: what each strand demands, and what it typically costs in sessions rather than in dirhams. Several of these can be taught inside one booking because they share a skill rather than a syllabus.

Biology within 4SD0

One of three papers - Years 10-11

Usually the cheapest strand to support, because the content is largely factual and the marks go missing on writing rather than on understanding. Explanation questions wanting a mechanism in order are the main leak. Two to four sessions on answer structure often moves this paper more than a term of content teaching would.

Chemistry within 4SD0

One of three papers - Years 10-11

The strand that most often needs real teaching hours. Moles, equations and concentration either work or they do not, and a student who has lost the thread in Year 10 cannot patch it in Year 11. Where a Double Award grade is below target, chemistry is the first paper we ask to see.

Physics within 4SD0

One of three papers - Years 10-11

Frequently a mathematics problem in a science costume. Rearranging equations, handling units and reading a gradient account for most of the lost marks. The cost-efficient fix is sessions on the numeracy rather than on the physics, which is cheaper because the same work pays off in the chemistry paper too.

Mathematics A (4MA1)

Foundation and Higher tiers

The highest-leverage subject on this list for a Double Award budget. Calculation marks appear in all three science papers, so four sessions of targeted number work can show up three times. Where a science mock shows blanks on every calculation, start here rather than with any science.

Single-award Biology (4BI1)

Transfer or progression route

The destination for Double Award students who decide they need biology in depth, and the comparison point for families weighing the two routes. It adds content the Double Award does not cover, including a topic on the use of biological resources, and that extra material is the real cost of transferring.

Single-award Chemistry (4CH1)

Transfer or progression route

The hardest of the three transfers to make late, because the single-award content builds rather than extends. Families considering it should get the content map before committing, and should price the catch-up honestly: this is usually six to ten sessions, not two.

Single-award Physics (4PH1)

Transfer or progression route

Transferable with moderate catch-up for a student who is already comfortable with the mathematics, and effectively impossible for one who is not. The entry test for this conversation is not interest in physics; it is whether the student can rearrange an equation without a prompt.

English Language A (4EA1)

First-language route

Named here because science marks depend on writing more than parents expect. Extended-answer questions in all three 4SD0 papers are marked on sequence and linkage. Families often find that work done for English shows up in the science grades at no additional science cost.

Geography (4GE1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Shares data-handling and case-study structure with the science papers and uses nearly the same command terms. Where a student performs well here and poorly in science extended answers, the problem is confidence in the science vocabulary rather than in the skill itself, and that is a short and cheap fix.

Business (4BS1)

Single award - Years 10-11

A common Abu Dhabi option pairing with Double Award and relevant to budgeting because it competes for the same revision evenings. When a family is choosing where limited tuition money goes, the subject with the clearest marking criteria usually gives the faster return, and that is often this one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three plan shapes cover almost every Double Award request from Abu Dhabi, and they differ mainly in how the money is spread. The first is the cheapest over two years, the second is the most expensive per hour, and the third is the one most families should start with.

One lead science tutor, weekly

A single tutor who can read mark schemes across all three 4SD0 papers takes one weekly session and rotates between the sciences according to what the last marked script showed. This is the lowest total cost over a two-year course because nothing is paid for twice and the diagnosis is continuous rather than repeated by three people.

  • One 60 or 90 minute session a week at a fixed time
  • Rotation decided by marked scripts, not by the school timetable
  • One invoice and one point of contact
  • Specialist cover added only for the paper that needs it

Targeted specialist block

Four to eight sessions with a specialist in one science, bought when the evidence names that paper as the problem. The per-hour rate is higher than general science support, and it is usually the better purchase, because a specialist fixes in six sessions what generalist teaching circles for a term.

  • Four to eight sessions, one science, a defined goal
  • Priced at the specialist band, not the general one
  • Starts from a marked paper rather than from the specification
  • Ends when the re-test says it can

Fortnightly review across three papers

The cheapest shape that still produces evidence. One session a fortnight built entirely around work the student has already done, with the tutor marking and questioning rather than teaching. Most Year 10 Double Award families should begin here and scale up only when a marked script says otherwise.

  • One 60-minute session a fortnight
  • Student brings their own attempts across all three sciences
  • Early warning when one paper starts slipping
  • Scales to weekly only on evidence

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Why three sciences do not mean three tuition bills

  • Two grades from three papers dilutes a single weak science
  • The first purchase is a diagnosis, not a teaching schedule
  • Chemistry is most often the paper responsible in the scripts we see
  • Command-term and calculation errors repeat across all three papers

The instinct is understandable. Three sciences appear on the report, so three hours a week get booked, and by half term the family is spending more on tuition than on any other part of the school year while the student is doing less of their own work than before. Double Award does not need that, and the structure of the qualification is the reason.

Two grades are reported from three papers. That means no single science carries a whole grade on its own, and a weakness in one paper is diluted in a way it would not be across three single awards. The practical effect is that the question worth paying to answer first is not how to teach three sciences but which of the three is actually costing the grades. That is a diagnostic question and it takes one session and one marked script, not three weekly bookings.

Once the diagnosis exists, the spend concentrates. In our experience of Abu Dhabi Double Award scripts, chemistry is most often the paper responsible, physics is most often a mathematics problem in disguise, and biology is most often a writing problem rather than a knowledge one. Each of those has a different and differently priced remedy, and two of the three are short. Booking all three sciences equally guarantees that at least two thirds of the money goes where it was not needed.

There is a second saving most families miss. One lead tutor across three papers sees patterns that three separate tutors cannot, because command-term errors and calculation failures repeat across the sciences. Fixing the pattern once pays three times. Three tutors each fix it in their own subject, and the family pays for the same lesson three times over.

02

The three 4SD0 papers and what they are worth to a plan

Pearson's Science Double Award is assessed by three written papers, one in each science, with no coursework component and nothing internally assessed. The two reported International GCSE grades are built from the combined performance across all three. There is no practical examination; practical skills are tested inside the written papers, which is why so many questions present an apparatus or a set of results and ask the student to interpret them.

For a tuition plan the important feature is that the papers are independent in content but not in grade. A student can be strong in two papers and weak in one and still see both reported grades dragged down, which is the mechanism behind the single most common Double Award complaint: the student says two of the three sciences are fine and the grades still disappoint. That is not a contradiction, it is arithmetic.

It also means the cheapest route to grade movement is almost always the weakest paper, not the favourite subject. Students revise what they enjoy, and in Double Award that is the least efficient possible allocation of their time. A tutor's first job, and the thing the first marked script buys, is to redirect that effort. It is worth saying to a fifteen-year-old explicitly, because the instruction to revise the subject you dislike makes no sense until somebody shows how the grades are calculated.

Confirm the current structure, paper durations and mark totals on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com before buying any resource. The specification is the document the centre teaches from, and it is revised; a summary on any website, including this one, is a guide to what to look for rather than an authority.

What the Abu Dhabi market charges, and who published each figure

Here is the table nobody else in this market publishes. Each band is attributed to the provider or rate survey that put the number in public, with the format it applies to, because a dirham figure without a format attached is meaningless: an in-home hour and an online hour are different products at different costs.

Read it as a range, not a price list. The bottom band buys homework supervision and is often a university student working from a textbook, which for three sciences is rarely enough. The middle band buys a teacher who knows the board. The specialist band buys someone who can mark a 4SD0 chemistry paper against the published scheme and explain why an answer scored two out of four, which in a qualification assessed entirely by written paper is the thing actually being purchased.

IB Gram's own number is not in the table, deliberately. We quote after the free trial lesson, when the tutor has seen a marked script and knows how much marking between sessions the plan requires. Quoting before that would mean either guessing high or guessing low, and in a three-science qualification the honest answer genuinely depends on which paper turns out to be the problem.

One figure to subtract from any quote you receive. The private tuition work permit in the UAE is issued free of charge, so a licensing or registration fee presented as a line item on a tutoring invoice has no basis in the published rules. Ask what it is for.

Budgeting a two-year 4SD0 plan month by month

Hourly rates are the wrong unit for a decision that runs across two academic years. Families budget monthly, and the useful question is what a Double Award plan costs per month at three realistic intensities, and in which months the intensity should change.

Bestimate's published monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions give a usable frame: roughly AED 240-600 a month at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Monthly packages seen in this market include an online offer at AED 799 a month for eight sessions and in-home arrangements at AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour visits. Those are published market figures, not ours, and the in-home comparison shows where the travel premium lands.

The shape matters more than the level. A plan that runs at the same intensity for twenty-four months wastes money in the quiet terms and under-provides in the loud ones. The sensible curve is light fortnightly review through Year 10, one short specialist block whenever a marked script names a paper, and a concentrated run-up in the four to six weeks before the series. That curve costs less in total than steady weekly sessions and produces more, because the expensive hours are bought when they can change something.

Two pieces of context for the household budget. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package, valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. School fee policy in Abu Dhabi is a matter for ADEK rather than KHDA, but the direction of travel in regional education costs is worth knowing before committing to a two-year tutoring spend.

Costing online against a visiting tutor over a full term

Per-hour comparisons flatter visiting tuition because they hide the parts a family pays for in time rather than in dirhams. Costed over a term, the gap widens, and for a three-science qualification it widens further because the specialist you want is less likely to live within range.

Take a plan of one weekly session across twelve weeks. At the published online specialist band, that is twelve hours of teaching with marking between sessions and no travel for anyone. At the published in-home band, the same twelve weeks costs more per hour before travel is counted, and the travel is counted twice: once in the rate, and once in the slot's reliability, because a visiting arrangement that depends on a drive across Abu Dhabi at five in the afternoon loses sessions to traffic, rain and school events in a way a video call does not. A lost session is a full session's cost with none of the benefit.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tuition is a service we offer only in India. That limit belongs in plain sight rather than in the small print. What replaces it is one-to-one teaching over live video with screen sharing, a shared whiteboard, optional recording and written marking between sessions. For three written papers with no practical examination, the work the qualification rewards is documents, and documents move more cheaply than people.

Group tuition is the honest third option and deserves a straight assessment. For Double Award it covers content economically and cannot diagnose, because diagnosis is about one student's specific errors across three papers. Price it as revision, judge it as revision, and do not expect it to tell you which paper is costing the grades.

Double Award, single awards, and the price of changing route

This is the decision with the largest financial consequence in the whole 4SD0 story, and it is usually made in a ten-minute options meeting at the end of Year 9. Double Award buys two science grades with less content than three single awards. For a student heading towards humanities, business or social sciences it is the right choice and the cheaper one in every sense, including the amount of tutoring the two years will need.

For a student who may want International A Level sciences, medicine or engineering, the calculation changes. The single awards carry content the Double Award does not, and post-16 courses are built on the assumption that it was taught. The fix is not impossible but it is not free: closing a single-award gap in chemistry is realistically six to ten sessions, biology rather fewer, physics dependent entirely on whether the mathematics is secure. Several Abu Dhabi schools allow the transfer during Year 10 and not afterwards, so the window is short.

The right way to price this is against the alternative. A handful of catch-up sessions in Year 10 is a small, bounded cost. Starting a two-year post-16 science course without the prerequisite content is an unbounded one, and it tends to be paid in the first year of the sixth form at the highest tuition rates in the market, under time pressure, at the point when nobody can afford the disruption.

What this does not require is guesswork. Read the published entry requirements of the specific sixth form or university the student has in mind, including UAE institutions, and ask the school directly which content the Double Award omits relative to the single award. Both answers exist in writing, and neither of them costs anything. No tutoring is needed to establish what a course requires, and any page implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency.

07

What is not a cost: permits, free school support and the fee position

Several things that look like costs in this market are not, and knowing which is which protects a budget better than negotiating an hourly rate. The clearest example is the permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, and the federal portal u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. A fee line on a tutoring invoice described as licensing or registration has nothing published behind it.

The second is school support. Abu Dhabi private schools sit under the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and most schools run their own intervention sessions for students below target. Those are free and they come from the teacher who wrote the specification scheme of work. Asking the head of science what is already available should precede any tutoring purchase, and a tutoring page that discourages the question is not acting in your interest.

The third is the part of the process nobody can sell you. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so nobody can quote you an amount. Separately, press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules describes a prohibition on school staff giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the MoHRE permit's code of conduct making a similar point. We treat that as press-reported rather than ADEK's exact wording, and the safe step is to check the current ADEK policy document before arranging anything.

Finally, the regional fee context. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27 under Dubai's economic incentives package. Abu Dhabi fee policy is ADEK's rather than KHDA's, so read that as context for where education costs are heading in the region, not as a statement about your own school. For Ministry of Education equivalency, the sourced British-track rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3 with Arabic and Islamic education excluded, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. Two Double Award grades can count towards that five. Verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae; IB Gram neither performs nor guarantees equivalency, and no tutoring is required for it.

08

Getting a comparable quote, and the questions that make quotes comparable

Most families in this market are not overpaying because they chose badly. They are overpaying because the three quotes they compared described three different products and only one of them said so. Six questions make quotes comparable, and they take one message to ask.

Ask which papers the quote covers, named: all three 4SD0 papers, or one science. Ask whether marking between sessions is included, and how much, because in a written-paper qualification that is the work. Ask what happens to a cancelled session on either side. Ask whether the rate changes closer to the series, since quotes do firm up as availability tightens in the final six weeks. Ask what the review point is and when it falls. And ask what it costs to change tutor, because the answer tells you how confident the provider is in the match.

Then ask the one question that separates a tutoring service from a lead-generation site: what will you show me in writing after a month? A provider working from marked scripts answers with a document. A provider working from impressions answers with a sentiment. In a qualification where every mark comes from a timed paper, there is no excuse for the second answer.

For completeness, here is our side of those answers. One free trial lesson, no card details. A written plan within a couple of days naming the paper responsible and the marks at stake. One lead tutor across all three sciences with specialist cover added only where the evidence calls for it. Marking between sessions included as standard. A re-test and a decision point in week five. A tutor change at no extra charge if the match is wrong. And a quote that arrives after the diagnostic, in dirhams, with what it includes written down.

Where we tutor

What a Double Award plan looks like across Abu Dhabi, community by community

These notes are about scheduling and spend rather than scenery. Three sciences means more homework landing on the same evenings, so where a family lives changes when sessions can run and therefore how many are realistically useful in a week.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community where a visiting tutor would spend a significant part of a paid hour travelling. Online slots from 5pm run reliably here, and families often split one weekly hour into two thirty-minute reviews across two sciences.

Al Reef

Compact and close to the airport road, with many households on fixed shift patterns. Early-evening availability is tight, so the better value here is a single well-marked weekend session rather than two rushed weekday ones.

Khalifa City

Dense British-curriculum intake and a heavy concentration of Double Award entries. School finishes early enough for a 4pm start, which is the most productive slot in the week and the one worth booking before October.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa living with a short school run and a long gap before dinner. That gap suits a 90-minute block covering two sciences, which is better value per dirham than two separate 60-minute bookings on different evenings.

Al Bateen

Island community near several long-established schools with early mock calendars. Plans here are built around internal assessment weeks rather than the Pearson timetable, which front-loads the spend into the autumn term.

Al Shamkha

Distance from the island schools makes this the clearest case in the emirate for online delivery on cost grounds alone. A visiting tutor's travel is not free; it is either inside the quote or it comes out of the teaching time.

Al Reem Island

Tower living with lifts and parking adding an unpredictable twenty minutes to any journey. A fixed online slot survives that; a visiting arrangement renegotiates itself every few weeks until somebody gives up.

School ecosystem

Khalifa City and Al Raha

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the three science grades and one marked script

The predicted or mock grades for all three 4SD0 papers, plus the most recent marked script from whichever looks weakest. That pair of documents is enough to tell whether this is a chemistry problem, a mathematics problem or a writing problem, and those three have different price tags.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson used as a diagnostic

No charge and no card details. Most of the session is the student attempting a short section of a released paper from the weakest science while the tutor watches how the question is read. That is where the useful information is, and it costs nothing to collect.

  3. 03

A written plan with the cost attached

Within a couple of days you receive the paper responsible, the marks at stake, the plan shape proposed, what marking is included, and the quote in dirhams. If any of those five is missing from a quote you receive anywhere, including from us, ask for it before paying.

  4. 04

Sessions at the intensity the evidence supports

One lead tutor, a fixed weekly or fortnightly slot on Gulf Standard Time, and specialist cover bought only for the paper that needs it. The plan is designed to be cheap in the quiet terms so there is budget left for the four to six weeks when it matters.

  5. 05

    Week-five re-test and a spending decision

An unseen section of comparable difficulty, marked and compared with the baseline. That comparison decides whether to continue, change shape, add a specialist block or stop. Stopping is a legitimate outcome and the page says so, because a plan that cannot be ended is a subscription rather than a service.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Every dirham figure carries its source

The bands on this page are attributed to the provider or survey that published them, with the format each applies to. Three of the most visible competing sites in this market publish no price at all and two quote in dollars. Knowing the published range is what lets you judge any quote, including the one we send after the trial.

One lead tutor across three papers

Command-term errors and calculation failures repeat across biology, chemistry and physics. One tutor who sees all three fixes the pattern once. Three separate tutors each fix it inside their own subject, and the family pays three times for the same lesson without ever being told that is what happened.

The quote comes after the diagnostic

We do not price a three-science plan before a tutor has seen a marked script, because the honest number depends on which paper is responsible and how much marking the plan needs. A provider who quotes a Double Award plan sight unseen is guessing, and the guess is not usually in your favour.

Free school support gets mentioned first

Most Abu Dhabi schools run intervention sessions for students below target, delivered by the teacher who knows the scheme of work, at no cost. We say so on the page. Any tutoring service that would rather you did not ask the head of science that question is optimising for its own revenue.

A clear line around the student's own work

4SD0 has no coursework, but schools still set investigations and reports. A tutor teaches, questions and marks. Nobody at IB Gram supplies a finished piece for submission or an answer to be copied across, and that boundary is stated plainly because competing pages in this market sell precisely that.

A plan you can stop

The week-five review is a genuine decision point, including the decision to stop. Marked scripts and session notes stay with you either way, so if a family pauses for a term or moves emirate the next tutor starts from the diagnosis rather than from nothing, and does not have to be paid to repeat it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much does an Edexcel IGCSE Science Double Award 4SD0 tutor cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Published bands in this market run roughly AED 45-150 an hour for budget online help, AED 150-300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 200-450 or more for an International GCSE specialist, and AED 180-500 for a visiting tutor with travel inside the rate. Those figures belong to the providers and rate surveys named in the table above. Because 4SD0 spans three papers, the number that matters is the monthly one rather than the hourly: published monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240-600 at the budget end and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Do I need to pay for three tutors to cover 4SD0?+

No, and it is usually the most expensive way to get the worst result. Two grades are reported from three papers, so the first question worth paying to answer is which paper is costing the grades, and that takes one marked script. From there a single lead tutor who can read mark schemes across all three sciences handles the weekly work, with a short specialist block bought only for the paper the evidence names. Three weekly bookings in September means at least two thirds of the money goes somewhere it was not needed.

How is Science Double Award 4SD0 different from taking three single sciences?+

4SD0 is assessed by three written papers, one in each science, and reports two International GCSE grades rather than three. It covers less of each science than the single awards do. For a student heading towards humanities, business or social sciences that is the sensible and cheaper route, in timetable terms as well as in tuition. For a student who may want International A Level sciences, medicine or engineering, the single awards carry content the Double Award omits, and post-16 courses assume it was taught. Read the specific course entry requirements rather than general advice.

Which of the three 4SD0 papers usually needs the tutoring money?+

In the Abu Dhabi scripts that reach us, chemistry most often. Moles, equations and concentration either work or they do not, and a student who lost the thread in Year 10 cannot patch it under exam pressure. Physics is frequently a mathematics problem wearing a science costume, so the cheaper fix is numeracy work that also lifts the chemistry paper. Biology is usually a writing problem rather than a knowledge one, and moves in two to four sessions on answer structure. Three different diagnoses, three different prices, and only a marked script tells you which applies.

Does 4SD0 have a practical exam or any coursework to pay for?+

No. There is no separately examined practical and no coursework component, so nothing is submitted and nothing is internally assessed. Practical skills are tested inside the three written papers, which is why questions routinely describe an apparatus or present a set of results and ask the student to identify variables, interpret data or write a supported conclusion. That shapes what tuition should buy: practice at reading unfamiliar experiments on the page. Confirm the current component structure on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com, because Pearson revises its own documents.

What should a monthly 4SD0 tutoring budget look like across two years?+

Not flat. A plan running at one intensity for twenty-four months wastes money in the quiet terms and under-provides in the loud ones. The shape that costs less in total is light fortnightly review through Year 10, one short specialist block whenever a marked script names a paper, and a concentrated run-up in the four to six weeks before the series. Published monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions in this market run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Is a monthly package better value than paying by the hour for 4SD0?+

It depends entirely on what the package includes, and packages in this market are not written to make that easy. Published examples include an online offer at AED 799 a month for eight sessions and in-home arrangements at AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour visits. Before comparing either with an hourly rate, ask three things: how many of the three sciences it covers, how much marking between sessions is included, and what happens to unused sessions. A package that bundles eight hours of talking and no marking is cheaper per hour and worse value.

Do tutoring rates in Abu Dhabi rise closer to the exam series?+

Availability tightens and quotes firm up in the four to six weeks before the first paper, which is also when the least useful work tends to get booked. A family starting in October for a May or June entry pays the quieter rate and has a wider choice of specialist. A family starting in April is paying the busy rate for crisis management. If budget is the constraint, the single most effective saving in this subject is starting earlier at a lower intensity rather than negotiating harder later at a higher one.

Does a private tutor in Abu Dhabi have to hold a permit, and does it cost anything?+

A permit is required and it is free. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so no amount can legitimately be quoted to you.

Can my child get 4SD0 help from their school for free before I pay anyone?+

Usually yes, and it should be the first call. Most Abu Dhabi private schools run intervention or clinic sessions for students below target, delivered by the staff who wrote the scheme of work, at no cost. Ask the head of science what is already running and whether your child is in it. Separately, press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules describes a prohibition on school staff giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, so free school support and paid help from a different tutor are the two clean options.

How many sessions a week do Abu Dhabi families usually book for Double Award?+

One a fortnight is the right starting point for a Year 10 student with stable grades, built around work the student has already done. One a week becomes sensible when a marked script names a paper or a transfer decision is pending. Two a week makes sense only in the final four to six weeks, or where whole topics are genuinely missing rather than technique. The week-five re-test rather than anyone's instinct decides which of the three applies, which is why that date gets set before the first session.

What does it cost to move from 4SD0 to a single-award science?+

Realistically six to ten sessions for chemistry, fewer for biology, and for physics it depends entirely on whether the student's mathematics is secure. The single awards carry content the Double Award does not, and that gap has to be closed before the transfer rather than after it. Several Abu Dhabi schools allow the move during Year 10 and not later, so the window is short. Price it against the alternative: a bounded catch-up cost now, or an unbounded one in the first year of a post-16 science course taken without the prerequisite content.

Do two Double Award grades count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

They can count towards the five subjects the British track requires. The sourced rule is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five. One well-ranked competing page states six subjects are needed. Verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority, because equivalency is a regulatory process IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee, and no tutoring is required for it.

Can one booking cover two children, one on 4SD0 and a sibling on single awards?+

Often it can, and in Abu Dhabi households it frequently should. Where both children are inside the same Pearson science family, one lead tutor can hold both plans, which costs less than four separate bookings and means the diagnosis is not repeated twice. Live sessions still run one-to-one, because two students with different papers in one hour is a group class with a premium price attached. What is shared is the tutor, the marking approach and the record, not the session itself.

What happens to the cost if we need to pause during Ramadan or exam weeks?+

Nothing should be charged for sessions not taken, and any quote you accept should say so in writing before you pay. During Ramadan school days shorten and late-afternoon concentration drops, so the practical move is shifting slots to after Iftar or switching to shorter and more frequent sessions rather than pausing entirely. Because delivery is online there is no travel arrangement to renegotiate. Ramadan weeks are better spent on paper technique and consolidation than on meeting a new topic for the first time, which also makes them cheaper weeks.

Get one comparable quote before you get three incomparable ones

Send the three 4SD0 grades and the most recent marked script from whichever science looks weakest. The trial lesson is free and takes no card details, and most of it is a cold attempt at a short paper section. What comes back is a written plan naming the paper responsible, the marks at stake, what marking is included and the quote in dirhams. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with one lead tutor across all three sciences and specialist cover only where the evidence asks for it. If the week-five re-test shows nothing moved, stopping is a legitimate answer and the scripts stay with you.
