IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What an Abu Dhabi family should have in writing by the end of week three

Most 4BI1 tuition begins the same way. A parent in Khalifa City or Al Mushrif sees a Year 11 mock grade of 5 against a school target of 7, and books someone who came recommended through a class group. Six weeks later the student reports that the sessions are useful, the next mock moves half a grade or does not move at all, and nobody involved can explain which part of the course was responsible. The missing ingredient is almost never effort. It is evidence: a written record of which of the five 4BI1 topics is leaking marks, which command terms are being misread, and what was done about each.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology is examined by two written papers and carries no coursework. Paper 1 is the longer sitting and holds 110 of the 180 marks available. Paper 2 holds the remaining 70 and is the only place Topic 5, the use of biological resources, can appear. Because nothing is internally assessed, every mark your child will ever be awarded comes from a script produced under timed conditions. That makes 4BI1 unusually easy to audit. A tutor can hand you marked sections of released past papers inside the first fortnight, with the marks attributed to topics rather than to adjectives.

The evidence pack we ask tutors to keep is deliberately boring. Session one sets a baseline: one Paper 2 section attempted cold, marked against the published mark scheme, then broken down by topic and by command term. Sessions two to four work the two weakest topics and nothing else. Session five repeats the exercise on an unseen section of comparable difficulty. The gap between those two scripts is the only honest answer to the question parents actually ask, and it arrives inside a month rather than after the next school mock in February.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing, because that is how IB Gram works everywhere outside India. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tuition is a service we offer only in India. In practice that is what lets an Al Raha Beach family work with a biology specialist who has taught the 4BI1 genetics and ecology topics for years, rather than whoever happens to be free to drive out to the compound at half past five. Sessions can be recorded on request, so a diagram drawn once is rewatchable the night before the paper.

None of this needs a long commitment. Market rates for International GCSE science tuition in Abu Dhabi are set out further down with their sources attached, the trial lesson costs nothing and takes no card details, and the first review point lands before most families have spent much at all. If after three weeks nobody can tell you which topic moved and by how many marks, that is a reason to change tutor. The page says so plainly because it is as true of us as of anyone else quoting for the same work.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

4BI1 does not begin in Year 11. The sequence below is the one Abu Dhabi families actually move through, from Key Stage 3 science into a two-year International GCSE course and on to International A Level Biology or Diploma Biology. Each stage changes what a biology tutor is for, and the handover points between them are where marks go quietly missing.

KS3Ages 11-14 - Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 Science

Three years of combined science that most British-curriculum schools in Abu Dhabi teach as a carousel, with biology appearing for a term at a time. The content is light but the habits are not: labelled diagrams, variables named correctly, units written on every answer. A Year 9 student who cannot yet draw a set of axes without prompting will lose marks in 4BI1 for reasons that have nothing to do with biology.

Abu Dhabi schools option students into single sciences or Double Award at the end of Year 9, and the decision is often made on a single internal test. A term of Year 9 support is the cheapest intervention available, because it changes which qualification your child is entered for rather than trying to rescue the grade two years later.

4BI1Ages 14-16 - Years 10-11

International GCSE Biology

The Pearson single-award specification, graded 9 to 1 and assessed by Paper 1 and Paper 2 with no coursework. Five topics run across the two years: the nature and variety of living organisms, structures and functions in living organisms, reproduction and inheritance, ecology and the environment, and the use of biological resources. Paper 1 covers the first four; Paper 2 reaches all five.

Abu Dhabi centres enter candidates in the May/June series and, increasingly, in November. Pearson publishes the final timetable for each series on its own site, and the entry deadline falls months before the first paper. A family planning a November entry should be having the conversation with the exams officer in the summer, not in October.

IALAges 16-18 - Years 12-13

International A Level Biology

The Pearson post-16 route many Abu Dhabi students take straight out of 4BI1, structured in units and examined in January, May/June and October windows depending on the centre. The jump is not in the biology so much as in the writing: answers lengthen, the data questions carry statistics, and marks start depending on whether a student can explain a mechanism in order rather than list its parts.

Students aiming at medicine or dentistry through UAE or UK universities usually need biology and chemistry together at this level. Where that is the plan, it is worth treating the second half of Year 11 as the first half of the A Level course, because the 4BI1 topics on transport and homeostasis are the ones that reappear immediately.

RESITAny year group - November series

November resit and private candidates

Pearson runs International GCSE in a May/June series and a November series, which gives a student who missed a grade one clean retry without losing a year. A resit plan is not a repeat of the course. It starts from the marked script, if the centre releases it, and it targets the specific components where the marks were lost rather than re-teaching the topics that already worked.

A private candidate in Abu Dhabi has to find a centre willing to accept external entries, pay the centre's own fee on top of the Pearson entry fee, and meet the centre's internal deadline rather than Pearson's. Start the search at least a full term ahead, because the places go early and some centres take no external candidates at all.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Biology is rarely the only subject in play. The list below is what Abu Dhabi 4BI1 students most often pair it with, and what each pairing does to a weekly timetable. Where a sibling subject shares a skill with biology, such as graph work, percentage change or extended prose, the two can be taught inside one session instead of booked twice.

Biology (4BI1)

Single award - Years 10-11

The subject of this page. Two written papers, 180 marks, no coursework, graded 9 to 1. Most of the marks that go missing sit in three places: genetic diagrams drawn without a key, osmosis and transport answers that describe rather than explain, and ecology questions where the student writes biology but not the biology the command term asked for.

Chemistry (4CH1)

Single award - Years 10-11

The usual partner subject, and the one that most changes a biology plan. Moles, concentration and percentage yield recur in biology data questions in a different costume. A student who is secure with calculations in 4CH1 generally picks up the quantitative marks in 4BI1 Paper 2 without any extra teaching, which is why we check the chemistry before adding biology hours.

Physics (4PH1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Taken alongside biology by students keeping engineering open as well as medicine. The overlap is skills rather than content: rearranging equations, reading a gradient, and writing a conclusion that refers to the data. Where a student is strong in biology and weak in physics, the diagnosis is almost always maths rather than science, and the session plan should say so.

Human Biology (4HB1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Pearson's separate human biology specification, offered by a small number of Abu Dhabi centres and occasionally chosen by private candidates. It shares a great deal with 4BI1 on structures and functions but treats plants and ecology differently. Check which code your child's centre has entered before buying any resource, because the past papers are not interchangeable.

Science Double Award (4SD0)

Two grades - Years 10-11

The three-science alternative that reports two International GCSE grades rather than three. Students move between 4SD0 and single-award biology more often than schools advertise, usually at the end of Year 10. If that move is on the table, a tutor should be mapping the extra single-award content before the transfer, not after.

Mathematics A (4MA1)

Foundation and Higher tiers

The quiet determinant of a biology grade. Paper 2 of 4BI1 rewards students who handle magnification, scale bars, percentage change and rates without stalling. Where a biology mock shows marks lost on every calculation question, the cheaper fix is four sessions of targeted number work rather than another pass through the specification.

English Language A (4EA1)

First-language route

Biology at this level is a writing subject in disguise. Six-mark explanation questions are marked on sequence and linkage, and a student who writes in fragments loses marks they have the knowledge to earn. Families often book 4EA1 and 4BI1 together for exactly this reason, and the explanation-writing work transfers both ways.

Geography (4GE1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Shares the ecology and human-impact ground with 4BI1 Topic 4, and shares its command terms almost exactly. Students who can structure a geography case-study answer usually find the biology ecosystem questions straightforward once somebody points out that the two are the same exercise with different vocabulary.

Business (4BS1)

Single award - Years 10-11

Common in the Abu Dhabi option blocks as a counterweight to three sciences, and worth naming here because it competes for the same revision evenings. Where a student carries biology, chemistry and business into Year 11, the timetable rather than the content is the problem, and a tutor should be helping triage it.

International A Level Biology

Progression route - Years 12-13

Where 4BI1 leads for most students who enjoyed it. The transition work that pays best is not new content but note-taking and the discipline of answering in mechanism order. Students who finish 4BI1 in June and start the A Level in September benefit more from four summer sessions on that than from pre-reading the first unit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of 4BI1 support cover almost every request that reaches us from Abu Dhabi. They differ in how much marking happens between sessions, which is the part that costs a tutor time and the part that produces the evidence a parent can read.

Weekly one-to-one with a marked section

The default. One live session a week on Gulf Standard Time, with a short section of a released 4BI1 paper attempted between sessions and marked against the published scheme before the next one. The session then spends its first ten minutes on the marking and the rest on the weakest topic it exposed. Over a term this produces a dated record of where the marks moved.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, same slot each week
  • One marked paper section per fortnight minimum
  • Topic-by-topic mark log kept for the parent
  • Recording available on request after each session

Run-up block before a Pearson series

A compressed plan of two or three sessions a week for the four to six weeks before the first paper. The content work is already done by this stage, so the block is paper discipline: timing per mark, reading the command term before the stem, and the order in which a six-mark explanation has to be written to collect all six.

  • Two or three sessions a week for four to six weeks
  • Full papers under timed conditions, then marked line by line
  • Command-term drill rather than fresh content
  • Ends before the paper, not the night before it

Fortnightly review for a student already on track

For a Year 10 student holding a 7 who does not need weekly teaching. One session a fortnight, built entirely around work the student has already done, with the tutor marking and questioning rather than explaining. This is the cheapest shape of support and the one most families should start with when the grade is stable.

  • One 60-minute session a fortnight
  • Student brings their own questions and attempts
  • Early warning when a new topic starts slipping
  • Scales up to weekly only if the evidence says so

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What a 4BI1 tutor can actually show you after three weeks

  • A cold baseline script, marked against the published scheme
  • Marks lost attributed to topic number and command term
  • One line per session recording what was actually taught
  • A second script on unseen material for comparison

Three weeks is about four sessions. That is not long enough to raise a grade, and any page telling you otherwise is selling. It is long enough to produce four specific things, and if they are missing at the end of week three you are not buying tuition, you are buying company.

The first is a baseline script. A section of a released 4BI1 paper, attempted cold without notes, marked against the published mark scheme, with each lost mark attributed to a topic number and to a command term. The second is a ranked list: the two topics costing the most marks, with the figures beside them, not a general sense that genetics is weak. The third is a record of what was taught in each session, in one line each, so the teaching can be checked against the ranked list. The fourth is a second script on unseen material of comparable difficulty, so the first can be compared with something.

Those four artefacts let you ask a question that tuition rarely survives: did the sessions address the topics the baseline identified, and did the second script improve on the first in those topics specifically? A general improvement across everything is usually practice effect. An improvement concentrated in the two topics that were taught is evidence. A decline is information too, and it is better to have it in October than in March.

Parents sometimes worry this sounds clinical for a fifteen-year-old. In practice students prefer it. The vague version of tutoring, where nobody says what is wrong, is far more demoralising than a sheet saying that Topic 3 is costing nine marks and that nine marks is most of a grade boundary.

02

The two 4BI1 papers and where the 180 marks sit

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology is assessed entirely by written examination. There is no internally assessed component and no coursework folder, which means there is nothing to submit, nothing to supervise and nothing a tutor could improperly influence. It also means the whole grade rests on two sittings.

Paper 1 is the long paper and carries 110 of the 180 marks on offer, a little over three fifths of the qualification. It draws on the first four topics. Paper 2 carries the remaining 70 marks and is the only component in which Topic 5, the use of biological resources, can be examined, alongside material from the earlier topics. The practical content of the specification is examined through these written papers rather than in a separate practical exam, which is why so many 4BI1 questions describe an experiment and ask the student to interpret it.

The consequence for planning is simple and most families miss it. A student who is strong on cells, transport and inheritance but has never touched fermentation, selective breeding or fish farming has capped their Paper 2 before they sit down. Because Paper 2 is the shorter paper, a weak Topic 5 does less damage than a weak Topic 2 overall, but it is also the easiest gap to close, since the topic is finite and heavily factual.

Always confirm the current component structure, durations and mark totals on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com before buying resources. Pearson revises specifications and publishes the authoritative version itself; a page like this one is a guide to what to look for, not a substitute for the document your child's centre is teaching from.

Reading a marked 4BI1 script when you are not a biologist

A marked script is the most useful document in this process and the one parents most often file away unread. You do not need the biology to read it. You need to know what the command term at the start of the question was asking for, because that single word sets the entire marking.

Edexcel questions are built from a small vocabulary of instructions, and each one has a price. State and name are one mark each and want nothing more than the word. Describe asks what happens and collects marks for observations. Explain asks why it happens and collects marks for mechanism, which is why a student who describes an explain question beautifully can score nothing. Calculate wants working shown, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip. Suggest signals that the context is unfamiliar and the examiner is accepting any scientifically sound reasoning.

Once you know that, the pattern in a script becomes visible without any subject knowledge. If the zeros cluster on explain questions, the problem is not revision, it is writing. If they cluster on calculate, the problem is maths. If they are spread evenly across a topic, the content genuinely is not known. Those three diagnoses lead to three completely different session plans, and guessing between them is how a term gets wasted.

This is also the quickest way to judge a tutor. Ask what the last script showed, by command term. A tutor working from evidence will answer in thirty seconds. A tutor working from impression will talk about confidence.

4BI1 COMMAND TERMS - WHAT THE EXAMINER IS PAYING FOR
Command termWhat earns the markTypical mark valueWhat a zero-scoring answer usually looks like
State / NameThe correct term, nothing else required1A sentence of context with the term missing
DescribeWhat is observed or what happens, in sequence2-4An explanation of why, when why was not asked
ExplainThe mechanism and its consequence, linked3-6A correct description with no causal link
CalculateWorking set out, then the answer with units2-3The right method, no working, one slip, nothing awarded
SuggestAny scientifically sound reasoning for a novel context2-4A memorised answer to a different question
CompareBoth sides addressed in the same sentence2-4Two separate paragraphs that never meet
04

The 4BI1 topics that cost Abu Dhabi candidates the most marks

  • Transport answers that describe structure instead of explaining movement
  • Genetic crosses with undefined symbols or a missing ratio
  • Topic 5 untouched because it only appears in the shorter paper
  • Magnification, scale and rate calculations abandoned mid-question
  • Ecology written as environmental opinion rather than named processes

Across the 4BI1 scripts that reach us from Abu Dhabi centres, the losses are not evenly spread. Four areas account for a disproportionate share, and three of the four are fixable in a handful of sessions because the problem is technique rather than knowledge.

Transport in plants and animals is the first. Students learn the structures and then meet a question about water movement under a changed condition and describe the structure again. The mark scheme wants the mechanism in order: concentration gradient, movement, consequence. Inheritance is the second, and here the losses are almost entirely presentational. A genetic cross drawn without defining the allele symbols, or a Punnett square with no phenotype ratio stated, throws away marks the student has clearly earned in their head.

The third is Topic 5, the use of biological resources, which appears only in Paper 2 and is routinely the last thing taught and the first thing forgotten. Fermenters, selective breeding, fish farming and glasshouse production are finite, factual and quick to secure, which makes them the best value revision in the specification. The fourth is quantitative work: magnification, scale bars, rates and percentage change. These are maths marks wearing a biology costume, and they go missing in clusters.

Ecology sits slightly apart. The content is usually known, but the answers are written as general environmental comment rather than as biology. The repair is a vocabulary discipline: name the organism, name the process, state the effect on the population. It takes two sessions and it moves marks in both papers.

05

Practical biology with no practical exam, and what that means for online lessons

Parents reasonably ask how a subject with this much laboratory work can be tutored over video. The answer starts with how Pearson assesses it. Practical skills in this specification are examined inside the written papers, not in a separate practical examination, so what is actually being tested is a student's ability to read an experimental setup, identify variables, interpret results and write a conclusion the data supports.

Every one of those is a paper skill. A tutor sharing a screen can put an unfamiliar apparatus diagram in front of a student, ask what is being controlled and why, and work through the answer in the same way an examiner will read it. Where a diagram needs drawing, the student draws on the shared whiteboard or photographs their page and uploads it, which is in some ways better than a classroom, because the drawing survives the session and can be compared with the next one.

What online delivery cannot do is replace the hands. A student who has never set up a potometer or watched an enzyme reaction change with temperature holds the knowledge more loosely than one who has. That work belongs in the school laboratory, and the right move is to make sure your child is actually doing it there rather than watching a partner do it. A tutor can tell you which of the specification's practicals matter most for the written papers, so the limited lab time is spent on those.

This is the honest version of the online case for biology, and it is not a compromise. The marks live in interpretation and in writing. Those are exactly the parts that one-to-one teaching with a shared screen and a marked script does better than a room with twenty-four students in it.

06

What 4BI1 tuition costs in Abu Dhabi, and what moves the number

Three of the six most visible tutoring sites in this market publish no price at all, and two of the remaining quote in US dollars, which UAE families do not transact in. The table below collects what the market actually charges in dirhams, with each band attributed to the provider or survey that published it. These are market rates, not IB Gram's price list. Our own quote follows the free trial lesson, once the tutor knows how much marking the plan involves.

The variables that move a science quote in Abu Dhabi are predictable. Format is the largest: a visiting hour includes travel the family pays for, which is why in-home bands sit well above online ones in every published survey. Specialism is next, because a tutor who teaches 4BI1 specifically rather than general science commands more, and reasonably so. Session length matters less than parents expect, since a 90-minute session is rarely half again the price of a 60-minute one. Marking between sessions is the hidden variable, and the one worth paying for in a subject assessed entirely by written paper.

Timing moves the number too. Quotes firm up as a series approaches and availability tightens in the four to six weeks before the first paper, which is also when the least useful work gets booked. A family that starts in October for a May/June entry pays the quieter rate and gets the better tutor. A family that starts in April pays the busy rate for crisis management.

Two figures worth holding beside the tutoring cost. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27 under Dubai's economic incentives package, which tells you something about the direction of education costs in the region generally. And the private tuition work permit itself is issued free of charge, so any quote presenting a licensing fee as a line item should be questioned.

Online, visiting and group tuition compared for an Abu Dhabi family

The question behind most searches for a biology tutor in Abu Dhabi is not really online or in-home. It is whether the person teaching your child knows 4BI1 well enough to read a mark scheme out loud and explain why an answer scored two out of four. Format matters because it decides how wide the pool of such people is.

A visiting tutor has to live within a tolerable drive. From Al Shamkha or Al Reef at five in the afternoon, that radius is small, and it shrinks further once you require a biology specialist rather than a general science tutor. Online delivery removes the radius entirely. A family in Al Falah can work with someone who has taught the inheritance and resources topics for a decade, at a time that does not depend on the Sheikh Zayed bridge.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tuition is a service we run only in India. That is a limit, and it belongs on the page rather than in the small print. What replaces it is one-to-one teaching over live video with screen sharing, a shared whiteboard, the option to record, and written marking between sessions. For a subject assessed by two written papers, that is not a lesser version of the service. The artefacts the papers reward are documents, and documents travel better than people do.

Group tuition deserves a straight answer too. For 4BI1 it works for content coverage and fails for diagnosis, because the whole value of the marked-script approach is that it is about one student's errors. A group class of six cannot do that, and should be priced and judged as revision, not as tuition.

The Pearson series counted backwards from the entry deadline

Nobody in this market publishes a calendar, and it is the single most useful thing a page about an exam can contain. Pearson runs International GCSE in a May/June series and a November series each year. The deadlines that matter to a family sit months before the first paper, and they are set by the centre as often as by Pearson.

The published reference points are these. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. The November 2025 series results reached students on 22 January 2026, which is the right expectation to hold for a November entry rather than a date to rely on. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, including the next International GCSE November papers, and those are the documents to work from because dates can be revised.

Read backwards, that gives a usable plan. If the goal is a May/June entry, the content should be complete by the February half term, with the spring term spent on timed papers and marking. If the goal is a November entry, the serious work happens over the summer, because October is already inside the exam window. A resit decision after August results has to be made quickly, since the centre's internal deadline for a November entry may already have passed.

One caution that applies to every date on this page. Always take exam dates from the official timetable at qualifications.pearson.com, and confirm entry deadlines with your child's exams officer, because the centre's internal cut-off is usually earlier than the board's. Cambridge makes the same point more bluntly for its own series: centres are allocated to administrative zones, and it says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone's timetable.

ADEK, the permit, and the five-subject equivalency rule

Abu Dhabi private schools are regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge. The federal portal u.ae states that ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, which is a different arrangement from Dubai, where KHDA oversees the quality of private education, and from Sharjah, where the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates it. ADEK is named by effectively none of the competing tutoring pages in this market, which is a strange gap given that it publishes the inspection ratings Abu Dhabi parents read.

Private tutoring itself sits with a different ministry. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and u.ae states that it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so no figure should be quoted to you by anyone, including us. The application route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing.

There is one Abu Dhabi-specific rule worth knowing before you ask a teacher for private help. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the MoHRE permit's code of conduct making a similar point. We treat that as press-reported rather than as ADEK's exact wording, and the sensible step is to check the current ADEK policy document before arranging anything. Either way, asking your child's own biology teacher to tutor them for payment is the wrong first move.

Finally, what the grade is for. For the British track, Ministry of Education equivalency requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. A 4BI1 grade can be one of those five. One well-ranked competitor page tells UAE families they need six IGCSE subjects; the sourced rule is five, and it is worth checking the current requirement on moe.gov.ae yourself because this is a regulatory process, not a tutoring one. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency, and no tutoring is required for it.

Where we tutor

Where 4BI1 students live in Abu Dhabi, and what that does to a session time

Abu Dhabi is spread across an island, a mainland corridor and a set of newer communities, and the school run shapes when biology can realistically be taught. These notes are about timing and school intake rather than scenery, because those are the two things that decide whether a weekly slot survives past half term.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Close to several long-established island schools, so pick-up is short and a 4.30pm slot works during term. Families here often run two children on different curricula, which is why a fixed weekly time matters more than a flexible one.

Al Reem Island

A tower community with a growing share of Year 10 and 11 students commuting to the island and to Khalifa City. Evening sessions after 6pm are the norm, and lifts plus parking make the last twenty minutes of any school run unpredictable.

Khalifa City A

Dense with British-curriculum intake and one of the areas where 4BI1 entries cluster. The school day finishes early, so a 4pm biology session is viable, which matters in the run-up to a November series when evenings are already full.

Al Raha Beach and Al Zeina

Apartment living with a short run to the Al Raha and Yasmina schools. Students here often have a long gap between the end of school and dinner, which is the single best window for a two-hour paper practice block at weekends.

Saadiyat Island

Served by a small number of selective schools where 4BI1 targets tend to be high and the mock calendar is heavy. Session planning here works backwards from internal assessment weeks rather than from the Pearson timetable.

Yas Island

A newer intake with a mix of boards in the same year group, so the first job on this island is usually confirming whether the biology entry is Pearson or Cambridge. Traffic across the bridges makes a fixed online slot far more reliable than a travelling one.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Villa communities a long way from the island schools, where a visiting tutor would spend most of an hour in the car. This is the area where online delivery changes the tutor pool most, because distance stops being a filter on who can teach the subject.

Al Reef

A compact community near the airport road with families on fixed shift patterns. Early-evening slots fill fast here, and a student sitting a November resit is usually better served by two shorter weekday sessions than one long weekend block.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and corniche schools

The oldest cluster of British-curriculum provision in the emirate, where International GCSE science entries are long established and mock calendars run early. Students we support here usually arrive with a marked mock script already in hand, which shortens the diagnostic considerably.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Al Muna Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City and the Al Raha corridor

The largest concentration of Year 10 and 11 science entries in Abu Dhabi, and a cluster where single-award and Double Award students sit in the same families. Confirming which specification a child is entered for is the first question we ask here, because the answer varies within one household.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Yasmina British Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Raha International School

Yas, Al Reef and the southern mainland

A newer and more mixed group, where boards differ between schools a few minutes apart and some students transfer mid-course. Transfer cases need a content map rather than a revision plan, because the gap is in what was taught, not in what was remembered.

  • West Yas Academy
  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Amity International School Abu Dhabi
  • Bright Riders School Abu Dhabi
  • Emirates National Schools

Schools are named only as context for the Abu Dhabi exam landscape; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or commercial relationship with any school listed, and students we support attend many schools not named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the last marked script

The most useful thing you can send is not a description of the problem but the last marked biology paper or mock, however bad it looks. If the school has not released it, ask the exams officer or the head of science for it; most will share a mock script with a parent who asks directly. A screenshot of the mark breakdown is enough to start.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, with a cold diagnostic

The trial lesson costs nothing and takes no card details. Most of it is the student attempting a short section of a released 4BI1 paper without notes while the tutor watches how they read the question. That is more informative than any conversation about confidence, and it produces the baseline the rest of the plan is measured against.

  3. 03

A two-page plan ranked by marks lost

Within a couple of days you receive a short written plan: the two topics costing the most marks with the figures beside them, the command terms being misread, the session shape proposed, and the date of the first re-test. If the plan does not name topics and numbers, say so and ask for one that does.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with marking between them

Sessions run at a fixed time on Gulf Standard Time, one-to-one over live video. Between them the student attempts a short paper section, and the tutor marks it against the published scheme before the next session. The marking is the part that produces evidence, and it is the part worth paying for in a subject assessed only by written paper.

  5. 05

    Week-five re-test and a decision point

In week five the student sits an unseen section of comparable difficulty and the two scripts are compared, topic by topic. That comparison decides whether the plan continues, changes shape or stops. Changing tutor at this point is a normal outcome, not a complaint, and it costs nothing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marks attributed to topics, not to adjectives

Every review point names a topic number and a figure. You should be able to read a one-page summary and know which part of 4BI1 cost the most marks last month and what was done about it, without knowing any biology yourself. Pages that promise progress without naming a component are describing a feeling.

A specialist rather than a radius

Online delivery means the filter on who teaches your child is whether they know this specification, not whether they can reach Al Shamkha before six. For a single-award science with five defined topics and two papers, that difference shows up in the first session, usually in how the tutor talks about Topic 5.

Market rates published with their sources

The AED bands on this page are attributed to the provider or survey that published them, with the format they apply to. Three of the most visible competing sites in this market publish no price at all. Knowing the bands lets you judge any quote, including ours, which arrives after the free trial lesson rather than before it.

A clear line around the student's own work

4BI1 has no coursework, but school assignments, practical write-ups and investigation reports still get set. A tutor teaches, questions and marks. Nobody at IB Gram supplies a finished piece of work for submission or an answer to be copied across, and that boundary is stated here because competing pages in this market sell exactly that.

Permit and conduct questions answered before you book

The private tuition work permit route, who is eligible, and the position on a child's own school teacher are set out on this page with their sources. You should not have to ask a tutoring service whether what it is arranging is permitted in the emirate, and you should be suspicious of any page that avoids the subject.

Recordings and notes that stay with you

Sessions can be recorded on request and the marked scripts remain yours. If the arrangement ends, the evidence does not. That matters most when a family moves school or emirate mid-course, which happens often enough in Abu Dhabi that the next tutor should never have to start the diagnosis from nothing.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much does an Edexcel IGCSE Biology 4BI1 tutor cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Published market rates in this emirate run roughly AED 45-150 an hour for budget online help, AED 150-300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200-450 or more for an International GCSE specialist. Visiting tutors sit higher, at AED 180-500, because travel is inside the price. Those figures come from the providers and rate surveys named in the cost table above, not from us. IB Gram quotes after the free trial lesson, once the tutor knows how much marking between sessions the plan needs, which in a subject assessed by two written papers is the part that actually changes the price.

Does Edexcel IGCSE Biology 4BI1 include a practical exam my child has to sit?+

No. The specification is assessed by two written papers with no separately examined practical and no coursework. Practical skills are tested inside those papers, which is why so many questions describe an apparatus or a set of results and ask the student to identify the variables, interpret the data or write a conclusion. That has a direct consequence for tutoring: the skills worth practising are reading an unfamiliar experiment and writing about it precisely. The hands-on work still matters for understanding and belongs in the school laboratory, so make sure your child is doing it there rather than watching a lab partner.

How are Paper 1 and Paper 2 weighted in 4BI1?+

Paper 1 carries 110 of the 180 marks available and draws on the first four topics of the specification. Paper 2 carries the remaining 70 marks and is the only place Topic 5, the use of biological resources, can be examined, though it can also reach back into earlier material. Confirm the current durations and totals on the live specification at qualifications.pearson.com, since Pearson revises its own documents. The planning point is that a student who has never revised Topic 5 has limited their shorter paper before they start, and that topic is finite and quick to secure.

Which 4BI1 topics do Abu Dhabi students lose the most marks on?+

Four areas account for most of the losses in the scripts that reach us. Transport in plants and animals, where students describe structures when the question asked them to explain movement. Inheritance, where the biology is right but the genetic diagram has no defined symbols or no stated ratio. Topic 5, which is taught last and revised never. And quantitative work such as magnification, scale bars and percentage change, which is really maths. Three of those four are technique rather than knowledge, which is why they move quickly once a marked script shows which one is responsible.

Can a 4BI1 tutor help with the practical write-ups my child's school sets?+

A tutor can teach the skills the write-up is testing, mark a draft the student has produced, and ask the questions that make the student find their own weak paragraph. What nobody at IB Gram will do is supply text for submission, rewrite a report to a finished state, or provide an answer to be copied across. There is no coursework component in 4BI1 itself, so the submitted work here is internal to the school, but the principle is the same one that applies to assessed coursework and it is worth being explicit about, because competing pages in this market sell the opposite.

My child sits 4BI1 in the November series. Is six weeks of tutoring enough?+

Six weeks changes paper technique reliably and content coverage only partially. If the specification has been taught and the marks are going missing on command terms, timing and calculation, six weeks of twice-weekly sessions with marking in between is a sensible plan and usually shows in a timed paper by week three. If whole topics have never been covered, six weeks is triage, and the honest conversation is about which components to protect. Either way, the first session should be a cold paper section rather than a revision lecture, because the plan depends on knowing which of the two situations you are in.

What is the difference between 4BI1 and taking biology inside Science Double Award?+

Single-award 4BI1 reports one International GCSE grade in biology and covers the subject in more depth, including Topic 5 on the use of biological resources. Science Double Award reports two grades across biology, chemistry and physics together and covers less of each. Students aiming at International A Level biology or at medicine generally want the single award. Abu Dhabi schools option students into one route or the other around the end of Year 9, often on one internal test, and movement between the two in Year 10 is more common than schools advertise. Ask which code your child is actually entered for.

Is Edexcel 4BI1 harder than Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610?+

They are different in structure rather than in difficulty. Pearson's 4BI1 uses two written papers with practical skills examined inside them. Cambridge's biology syllabus is tiered and includes an alternative-to-practical style component, and Cambridge runs June and November series with centres allocated to administrative zones, each with its own timetable. The practical consequence for a family is that past papers are not interchangeable, so buy nothing until you have confirmed the code on your child's statement of entry. A tutor who cannot tell you which board the school entered should not be marking the scripts.

How do I find out whether my child's Abu Dhabi school entered Edexcel or Cambridge for biology?+

Ask the exams officer for the statement of entry, which lists the specification code against each subject. It is the fastest and most reliable route, and the code matters: 4BI1 is Pearson's single-award biology, 4SD0 is its Double Award, and Cambridge uses an entirely different numbering. Schools in the same part of Abu Dhabi sometimes use different boards, and some centres enter different boards for different subjects within one student's timetable. Textbook covers and department habits from previous years are not evidence. Get the code in writing before buying resources or booking tuition.

Does a private biology tutor in Abu Dhabi need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, which states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted with suspicion. The application route is MoHRE's own service page for private tutor licensing.

How many 4BI1 sessions a week do Abu Dhabi families usually start with?+

One a week is the normal starting point for a Year 10 or early Year 11 student, with a short paper section marked between sessions. Two a week makes sense in the four to six weeks before a series, or where whole topics are missing rather than technique. A Year 10 student already holding a strong grade is often better served by one session a fortnight built around work they have already done. The deciding evidence is the week-five re-test rather than a parent's or tutor's instinct, which is why that date is set at the start.

Can my child's own biology teacher tutor them privately in Abu Dhabi?+

Treat that as the wrong starting point. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct making a similar point. We treat that reporting as press-sourced rather than as ADEK's exact wording, so check the current ADEK policy document before arranging anything. A separate tutor who does not teach at the school avoids the question entirely, and also gives your child a second explanation of the same topic.

Does a 4BI1 grade count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

It can be one of the five subjects the British track requires. The sourced rule is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count of five. One well-ranked competing page tells UAE families they need six subjects. Check the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority yourself, because equivalency is a regulatory process that IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee.

How do online 4BI1 lessons handle diagrams, graphs and data tables?+

With a shared whiteboard and screen sharing, which for this subject is an advantage rather than a workaround. The tutor can put an apparatus diagram or a results table on screen, annotate it live, and ask the student to label or extend it. Where the student needs to draw, they either draw on the whiteboard or photograph their page and upload it, and that image stays in the record for comparison with the next attempt. Sessions can be recorded on request, so a mechanism drawn once in October is still rewatchable the night before the paper.

Can 4BI1 sessions move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan?+

Yes, and they usually should. School days shorten during Ramadan and concentration in the late afternoon is not what it is in February, so the useful hours shift. Families commonly move a 5pm slot to after Iftar, or switch to shorter and more frequent sessions. Because delivery is online there is no travel to rearrange, which makes the change a scheduling message rather than a renegotiation. The content plan matters here too: Ramadan is better spent on paper technique and consolidation than on introducing a new topic for the first time.

What happens if the first 4BI1 tutor is not the right fit?+

You say so and we change the tutor at no extra charge. Nobody should spend a term on a mismatch, and a subject-specialist match is not an exact science, particularly for a fifteen-year-old who has to be willing to be wrong out loud. The week-five review exists partly for this: if the re-test shows no movement in the topics that were taught, that is evidence about the match rather than about your child. Marked scripts and session notes stay with you, so the next tutor starts from the diagnosis rather than from the beginning.

Start with the script you already have

You almost certainly have the most useful document in this process already: your child's last marked biology paper. Send it, book the free trial lesson, and let the first session be a cold attempt at a section of a released 4BI1 paper rather than a conversation about confidence. What comes back is a short written plan naming the two topics costing the most marks, the command terms being misread, and a date in week five when the whole thing gets re-tested. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. If the evidence does not move, you will know in a month, and so will we.
