Certified IGCSE Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Looking for a certified IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi raises a question most providers answer badly: certified by whom? Neither Cambridge nor Pearson issues a tutor certificate. What exists is a legally required work permit, a set of teaching qualifications that prove different things, and an examiner claim that is frequently made and rarely evidenced. This page separates the three, explains what each one actually tells you, and sets out how a parent in Abu Dhabi can verify any of them.

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit explained with its legal instrument
  • Each credential matched to what it proves and what it does not
  • Syllabus codes named per subject, so a claim can be tested

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Certified by whom, exactly?

The phrase has a reassuring shape and almost no fixed meaning. Cambridge International does not issue a certificate to private tutors. Pearson does not either. There is no IGCSE tutoring qualification, no register of approved tutors, and no body that inspects a one-to-one lesson. So when a provider in this market advertises certified tutors, the useful response is a single question: certified by whom, and in what?

Three genuinely different things get collapsed into that one word. The first is the legal permission to tutor in the UAE at all, which is a work permit issued by MoHRE, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. That one is not optional and it is checkable. The second is a teaching qualification, such as QTS, a PGCE or a subject degree, each of which proves something quite specific and nothing beyond it. The third is examiner experience, which is the claim most often made and least often evidenced.

Each of those answers a different parent question. The permit answers whether this is lawful. The teaching qualification answers whether someone has been trained to teach, which is not the same as knowing a syllabus. Examiner experience, where it is real and current, answers whether someone has internalised a mark scheme. A tutor with all three is not automatically right for your child, and a tutor with one of them may be exactly right, which is why the second half of this page is about the thing a certificate cannot tell you.

That second half is the subject itself. What an IGCSE paper actually assesses, how the assessment objectives are weighted, what the Core and Extended entry does to a grade ceiling, and where marks are genuinely lost, subject by subject and syllabus code by syllabus code. A tutor's competence shows up in whether they can describe your child's paper precisely, not in what they have framed on the wall. The best verification available to any parent is a single trial lesson with a past-paper question in it.

One statement of position, because it matters in a market where this line gets blurred constantly. IB Gram is not approved, licensed, accredited or endorsed by ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. It holds no educational services permit, operates no centre or office in the UAE, and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the country. Lessons for Abu Dhabi families are delivered one-to-one over live video. Those bodies are named on this page because knowing what they govern is useful to a parent, not because any of them vouches for this service. If any provider tells you otherwise about itself, ask for the permit or centre number, since each of those is a specific document issued to a specific entity at a specific address.

At a glance

  • No exam board issues a private tutor certificate for IGCSE
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is the one legal requirement, and it is free of charge
  • QTS, a PGCE and a subject degree each prove something different and narrow
  • Examiner status should be evidenced and current, or treated as marketing
  • A trial lesson on a past-paper question tests more than any credential list
  • Lessons are one-to-one and online; no tutor visits a UAE address

What a tutor needs to know differs by qualification, and so does the evidence worth asking for. These are the four routes Abu Dhabi families are hiring for, with the competence each one actually demands.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge International GCSE

Terminal papers against four-digit codes, with assessment objectives published per syllabus and weighted differently across subjects. Several syllabuses are tiered: Core papers and Extended papers lead to different grade ceilings. The competence test for a tutor is whether they can state the paper structure and the objective weightings for the specific code without looking them up.

Cambridge provision is the most widespread across Abu Dhabi's British curriculum schools, so most families here are hiring against a Cambridge code. Ask the school which code and which tier in writing, then ask a prospective tutor to describe the papers for it. A tutor who answers in general terms about the subject rather than specifically about the code is not yet qualified for the job you are hiring for.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Codes such as 4MA1 Mathematics A, 4MB1 Mathematics B, 4PH1 Physics, 4CH1 Chemistry, 4BI1 Biology and 4EA1 English Language A. Exams are available in May/June and November each year, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. Paper structures and assessment wording differ from Cambridge even where the content overlaps.

The specialist pool per subject is thinner inside Abu Dhabi than for Cambridge, which is where a credential claim deserves the most scrutiny. A tutor who has taught 0620 Chemistry for a decade is well qualified for 0620 and has to learn 4CH1's structure. Both facts can be true, and an honest tutor will say so rather than treat the two as interchangeable.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International AS and A Level

The usual continuation route, where subject depth narrows the credible tutor pool sharply. At this level a subject degree carries more weight than it does at IGCSE, because the content genuinely reaches undergraduate foundations in Further Mathematics, Physics and Economics. Teaching training still decides whether that knowledge reaches a seventeen-year-old.

This is also the qualification UAE Ministry of Education equivalency asks for on the British track. The published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five, plus one A-Level at no less than E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. Verify the current wording through the Ministry's own channel before planning around it.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across two levels plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, with an internally assessed component in every subject. The credential question is sharper here, because internal assessment criteria are detailed and subject-specific, and a tutor who has not worked with a particular subject's criteria will give plausible but unhelpful feedback.

Abu Dhabi schools sit the May session. IB session and results dates are not published on these pages: the IB's own site blocks automated checking, so nothing in this project has been confirmed from the board. Ask your school's IB coordinator or read ibo.org directly for any date. The academic-honesty boundary is also strictest here, and a tutor who offers to write any part of an internal assessment is a risk to the student, not a resource.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A credential is only meaningful against a specific paper. These are the subjects Abu Dhabi families hire for, with what the assessment actually rewards and the question that tests whether a tutor knows it.

Mathematics (0580, 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Marks split between method and accuracy, so unshown working forfeits credit even for a right answer. The test question for a tutor: what does the Core entry cap the grade at, and which topics appear only on the Extended papers? A tutor who cannot answer that will prepare a student for papers they will not sit.

Physics (0625, 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Quantitative answers need units and sensible significant figures, and graph questions carry marks for axes and gradients as well as conclusions. Ask a tutor how the practical or alternative-to-practical component is assessed on your child's code; the answer differs between boards and is the clearest competence test in this subject.

Chemistry (0620, 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Moles calculations, organic mechanisms, state symbols and balanced equations. The presentation marks here are dense and cheap to recover, which is why chemistry responds well to a short block. Ask a tutor which equation conventions the mark scheme credits; a vague answer means the mark scheme has not been read recently.

Biology (0610, 4BI1)

Core and Extended

The most command-word sensitive of the sciences. Describe and explain are marked differently, and a student who confuses them loses marks regardless of knowledge. A competent tutor will talk about assessment objectives and command words before talking about topics, because that is where the recoverable marks sit.

English First and Second Language (0500, 0510, 4EA1)

IGCSE

Two different qualifications often conflated by providers. First Language is directed writing and analysis against band descriptors; Second Language includes accuracy, range and the listening and speaking components. Hiring the wrong specialist is the most common credential mismatch in this subject across the market.

English Literature (0475, 4ET1)

IGCSE

Set-text dependent, so the only credential that matters is whether the tutor has taught your child's actual texts and the option papers the school entered. Essay argument and quotation use carry the marks. A tutor who asks for the text list before quoting a rate is demonstrating the right instinct.

Economics and Business (0455, 0450, 4EC1)

IGCSE

Evaluation marks are the largest recoverable block and the most frequently abandoned. Diagrams need labels, shifts and a stated direction of change. Ask a tutor how many marks a typical evaluation question carries on your child's paper and what distinguishes a top band response from a middle one.

History and Geography (0470, 0460)

IGCSE

Source utility and case-study specificity. A paragraph with a named example outscores a well-written generalisation every time. These are option-led papers, so a tutor must know which options the school entered before any preparation has value, and should ask you for that at the first contact.

Coordinated and Combined Sciences (0654, 0653)

Double and single award

Three strands in one qualification, and the credential question is whether one tutor can genuinely cover all three at the depth required. Many cannot, and the honest ones say so. Ask which strand they are strongest in and plan the hours accordingly rather than assuming equal coverage.

Additional and International Mathematics (0606, 0607)

IGCSE

A scarce specialism locally. 0607 carries its own structure and a graphic display calculator expectation, which is a specific technical competence rather than general maths ability. Ask which calculator model the tutor teaches with and how calculator-method marks are awarded on that paper.

Computer Science and ICT (0478, 0417)

IGCSE

Pseudocode notation, trace tables and the practical component, where the mark scheme is particular about form. A professional developer who has not taught the syllabus will write better code and lose more marks than a trained teacher who has. This is the subject where a teaching credential matters most relative to industry experience.

Arabic (0508, 0544)

First Language and Foreign Language

Taught alongside the licensed curriculum in every UAE private school. First Language and Foreign Language are separate syllabuses with separate expectations, and matching the wrong one is common. Arabic and Islamic Education are excluded from the five subjects counted for British-track Ministry equivalency.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Credentials decide who teaches; the arrangement decides whether it works. These are the three shapes we use for IGCSE, each with a different competence demand on the tutor.

Weekly one-to-one against the syllabus code

One subject, one tutor, one slot, with the work planned against the published syllabus for the exact code and tier the school has entered. The tutor's competence is visible in the plan: a list of papers, objectives and recurring question types rather than a list of topics copied from a textbook contents page.

  • Plan written against the specific code, not the subject
  • Core or Extended entry confirmed before the first session
  • Same tutor and slot each week in Gulf Standard Time
  • Marked work against the published mark scheme each session

Technique block on the assessment objectives

Six to ten sessions aimed at the objectives rather than the content: command words, method presentation, evaluation structure, diagram conventions. This is where a trained teacher outperforms a subject expert, because the skill being taught is how to answer rather than what to know. The block is scoped from a marked paper.

  • Scoped from the student's own marked mock, not the syllabus
  • One objective targeted per session with a timed attempt
  • Best value where content is known and marks still go missing
  • Known number of sessions agreed before starting

Coursework and internal assessment feedback

Where a subject carries an internally assessed component, the tutor's role is process coaching and feedback on work the student has already written: structure, method, referencing, and whether the criteria have been addressed. Nothing is written, redrafted to completion or produced on the student's behalf, at any level.

  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never a rewrite
  • Criteria explained in the board's own language
  • Referencing and academic-honesty practice taught explicitly
  • School deadlines and internal submission dates respected

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What "certified" can legitimately mean in UAE tutoring

A certified IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi can hold three sorts of credential, and only one of them is a legal requirement. The MoHRE private tuition work permit is the requirement. A teaching qualification is a professional credential. Examiner experience is a claim about a past role. No exam board certifies private tutors, and no UAE authority maintains a register of approved individual tutors for parents to search.

The distinction matters because each one answers a different question and families routinely accept one as an answer to another. A tutor with a doctorate in chemistry has proved they understand chemistry; they have not proved they know what a 0620 mark scheme credits. A tutor with QTS has proved they were trained to teach a class of thirty; they have not proved they have taught your child's board. A tutor with a permit has proved they may lawfully charge for tutoring in the UAE, which says nothing about quality but a great deal about whether the arrangement is above board.

The table below is the version worth keeping. For each credential it sets out who issues it, what it genuinely demonstrates, what it does not, and the one thing a parent can do to check it. Most of those checks take minutes, and almost nobody performs them, which is why the claim is so freely made. Asking is not rude; a tutor who is irritated by a verification question has told you something useful.

A final note on how to read any provider's claims, including this page's. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or endorsement from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, operates no UAE centre or office, and delivers every UAE lesson one-to-one over live video. Any provider stating otherwise about itself should be asked to produce the permit or centre number, because those are specific documents issued to specific entities and either exist or do not.

02

The one certification that is actually required: the MoHRE work permit

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, it is granted free of charge for two years, and it carries a code of conduct. MoHRE's own service is listed as private tutor licensing, with no fee stated and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

The eligibility list is broader than most parents expect, and knowing it prevents two different mistakes. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. So a university student tutoring maths in Abu Dhabi is not operating outside the system by definition; they are eligible for the same permit a school teacher is. The question is whether they hold it.

What happens without one is stated plainly by the authorities and should not be embellished. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone, including by pages like this one. A figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source, and a provider who quotes one is making it up or repeating someone who did.

A business is a different legal animal from an individual. A tutoring operation with premises and staff needs an educational services permit for a training institute from the relevant authority, with initial approval first, a limited window to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested ahead of expiry. That is a specific document issued to a specific entity. IB Gram holds no such permit and operates no premises in the UAE, which is why it describes itself as an online tutor-matching platform and not as a centre.

What an IGCSE paper actually assesses, and where the marks go

A credential check tells you whom to hire. The rest of this page is about what they should then do. An IGCSE grade is the sum of marks awarded against published assessment objectives, and those objectives are weighted differently across subjects. Knowledge and recall is one objective; applying it to an unfamiliar context is another; analysing, evaluating and handling data is a third. A student can be strong on the first and lose most of the available marks on the others.

This is why content revision so often fails to move a grade. A student who has read the textbook twice has worked on one objective. The question that asks them to suggest why a result was unexpected, or to evaluate whether a policy achieved its aim, is testing something the textbook does not practise. The repair is not more content but a specific drill on the objective the marks are being lost against, which is a short piece of work with an outsized effect.

The table maps the component types a student will meet, what each is testing, where the marks typically go and what a session actually fixes. It is written generically across subjects because the objective weightings differ per syllabus; for your child's code, the published syllabus document states the exact split, and a tutor should be working from that document rather than from memory. The boards publish them, and so should any tutor be able to point you to the right one.

One boundary worth stating here. This page publishes no past papers, no mark schemes, no grade boundary tables and no syllabus documents, and it will not supply them. Those materials belong to Cambridge and Pearson, reproducing them is not ours to do, and a provider offering a library of them as a download is taking a risk with somebody else's copyright. The correct route is the board's own site or your child's school, and a good tutor works from the official current version because syllabuses are revised.

Core or Extended: the entry that quietly caps the grade

  • Ask the school in writing for the syllabus code and tier per subject
  • Ask what evidence would support a move from Core to Extended, and by when
  • Entry deadlines sit months before the papers; a June-series entry closes in the spring, long before revision peaks
  • Pearson runs May/June and November series, so a resit timetable is known in advance
  • Confirm every date against the board's live timetable rather than a tutoring page

Several Cambridge syllabuses are tiered, and the tier is the single most consequential administrative fact about a student's entry. Core papers and Extended papers cover different content and lead to different grade ceilings, so a student entered for Core cannot reach the top grades however well they perform. Families discover this at various points, and the later the discovery the more expensive it is.

The sequence that goes wrong looks like this. A student is placed in a Core set in Year 10 on the basis of Year 9 performance. The family hires a tutor in Year 11, the student improves substantially, and everyone assumes the improvement will show in the result. It cannot, beyond the ceiling. And by the time anyone checks, the entry deadline may already have passed. A UAE centre enters candidates for the June series or the November series, and the June entry closes in the spring, months before the papers are sat across May and June. That means the tier a student is sitting at was fixed while the mocks were still being marked, and the window for arguing about it was the autumn of Year 11 at the latest. The exact closing day is on the centre's statement of entry; if nobody in the family has read that document, nobody in the family knows which paper the student is actually entered for.

So the first conversation with a school is not about tutoring at all. It is a request in writing for the syllabus code and the tier for every subject, and a question about what evidence the department would need to move a student from Core to Extended and by when. That conversation costs nothing in October. Having it in February means the answer no longer matters. A tutor who does not ask about the tier in the first session is not paying attention to the thing most likely to determine the outcome.

The parallel point on the Pearson side is the series choice rather than the tier, since tiering varies by subject. Pearson International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year, so a resit is a visible option on a known timetable rather than a year's wait. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, which is a reminder that any date, including the ones on this page, should be confirmed against the live official timetable before anyone plans around it.

05

Which credential matters for which subject

The credential that helps most is subject-dependent, and this is where a generic certified claim is least useful. In Computer Science and ICT, a trained teacher who knows the pseudocode notation the mark scheme credits will outperform a professional developer, because the marks are awarded for form as much as function. In Further Mathematics or A-Level Physics, depth of subject knowledge genuinely matters, and a strong degree is worth more than it is at IGCSE.

In the sciences at IGCSE, the useful credential is specific experience of the practical or alternative-to-practical component on the relevant code, because that component is assessed differently between boards and is where unprepared students lose a concentrated block of marks. In English, the division is between First Language and Second Language, and a tutor fluent in the band descriptors for one is not automatically useful for the other. In Literature and the humanities, the only credential that counts is having taught the specific texts and option papers.

Examiner experience deserves its own paragraph because of how it is used. Where it is real, recent and in the relevant subject, it means someone has applied a mark scheme to hundreds of scripts and knows what the middle of a band looks like. That is genuinely valuable. What it does not mean, and must never be implied to mean, is access to unreleased papers, to grade boundaries before publication, or to any information not available to a school. We do not describe a tutor as an examiner unless the board, subject, series and year can be stated, and we would suggest you apply the same test to anybody else.

The practical shortcut, for a parent with limited time, is to ignore the list of credentials and ask three subject questions instead. What are the papers for my child's code, and what are they each worth? Where do most students lose marks on that paper? What would you do in the first three sessions? A tutor who answers those precisely has demonstrated more than any certificate does. A tutor who answers them in general terms about the subject has told you they have not yet looked at the syllabus.

06

Verifying a tutor without taking anybody's word for it

  • Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit, before the first payment
  • Ask for the paper structure and objective weightings for your child's exact code
  • Ask for a marked student script with identifying details removed
  • Get the slot, cancellation terms, deliverables and replacement process in writing
  • Use the trial lesson to watch a question be attempted, marked and explained

Verification in this market is unusually easy and unusually rare. Nothing on the list below requires a lawyer, a fee or more than a short exchange of messages, and together they eliminate the great majority of mismatches families later regret. The reason to do it before the first payment rather than after the first month is that a wrong match costs a term, and a term in Year 11 is not replaceable.

Start with the permit, because it is binary. Ask the tutor directly whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit and ask to see it. There is no awkwardness in the question: the permit is free, it takes a stated two working days to issue, and the eligibility categories are broad, so a willing tutor has no reason not to hold one. A refusal, or a long explanation about why it is not needed, is the answer to a different question.

Then test the subject claim with the three questions in the previous section, and ask for a marked example of a student script with the identifying details removed. A tutor who marks against the published mark scheme will have one. Next, confirm the practical arrangements in writing: the weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, what happens to a session cancelled at short notice, what you receive after each lesson, and what the replacement process is if the match does not work.

Finally, use the trial lesson as the real test, because it is the only one that observes teaching. Ask for a past-paper question to be attempted and marked inside it. Watch for three things: does the tutor let your child work, do they mark against the scheme rather than their own view, and can they name the specific mark-scheme point that was missed. Our trial is a full session on a real question, no card details are taken to book it, and nothing is owed if you stop there.

07

Abu Dhabi specifics: ADEK, school staff and the conflict nobody mentions

Abu Dhabi's private schools are overseen by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes per school. Of the competitor tutoring pages reviewed for this project, not one named ADEK at all, which is a strange omission on pages aimed at Abu Dhabi parents. ADEK governs schools; it does not certify private tutors, and no tutoring provider can hold a tutor accreditation from it because no such instrument exists.

The Abu Dhabi fact that bears directly on hiring is the professional-ethics position for school staff. Press reporting on the emirate's rules describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and notes that teachers tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is secondary reporting rather than a quotation from the current policy document, so verify it against ADEK's own published policy before relying on the exact wording.

The principle behind it is sound regardless of the precise drafting, and it is worth a parent's attention because the offer is made often. The person who sets and marks your child's school assessments should not also be paid to prepare them for those assessments. It compromises the assessment, it puts the teacher at professional risk, and it leaves the family holding an arrangement that may breach a code of conduct. If your child's own teacher offers private lessons, the right response is a question to the school rather than a transaction.

What this means for how we describe ourselves is simple and worth repeating once more. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified, licensed or endorsed by ADEK or by any other UAE authority or exam board, holds no educational services permit, operates no office or centre in the emirate, and does not offer home visits in the UAE. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video. Where we name a regulator on this page, it is to explain what that body governs, nothing more.

08

What no certificate can tell you, and how to find it out in one session

Every credential on this page is a statement about the past. None of them predicts the thing that actually determines whether tutoring works, which is the fit between one adult and one teenager at 5pm on a Tuesday. A tutor can hold a permit, a PGCE, a first-class degree and genuine examiner experience, and still be the wrong person for a particular fifteen-year-old who needs to be asked questions rather than told answers.

What a single well-run session reveals is more diagnostic than a page of qualifications. Does the tutor spend the first ten minutes finding out what the student can already do, or does the lesson begin with an explanation? Does the student spend more of the session working than listening? When a mistake appears, does the tutor correct it or get the student to find it? Is the session's objective something the student could state afterwards in one sentence?

There is a specific test for honesty too, and it is worth watching for. Ask what the tutor thinks the realistic outcome is. The honest answer involves the marks-to-boundary distance from the school's own mock, a note that grade boundaries are set per series after papers are sat, and a description of what should visibly change in six sessions. A promised grade is the answer of someone selling rather than teaching, and it should end the conversation rather than reassure you.

So the recommendation this page ends on is a sequence rather than a credential. Confirm the syllabus code and tier with the school in writing. Ask any provider the five verification questions. Then take one trial lesson that contains a real past-paper question, marked, with the lost mark explained. Ours is free, takes no card details, and ends with the marked script in your hands. If the fit is wrong you will know within the hour, which is considerably faster than a certificate would have told you.

Verification is the same job wherever you live, but the local supply of credentialled tutors is not. These are the communities families hire from and what the local market looks like in each.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

The emirate's deepest local tutor market, which also means the widest range of credential claims. Being spoiled for choice makes the verification questions more useful here, not less, because the variation in quality is wider.

Khalifa City

A large secondary population served by a local pool that is thinner than the island's. Families here report more unverified claims simply because fewer people cover each subject, so the pressure to accept whoever is available is higher.

Al Reef

Distance limits in-home supply to a handful of people per subject. Searching by credential and syllabus code rather than by availability is what changes the outcome for families in this community.

Saadiyat Island

A concentrated school cluster and a correspondingly active tutoring market. Premium rates appear most often here, so the question of what a higher rate is actually buying deserves asking directly.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living with a transient population, which means more newly arrived tutors whose UAE permit position is recent or pending. Worth asking about specifically rather than assuming.

Yas Island

Many mid-year school transfers, so families often hire quickly and verify afterwards. Reversing that order costs nothing and removes most of the problems families later describe.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A dense Year 10 and 11 corridor where word-of-mouth recommendations circulate fast. A recommendation is useful evidence about rapport and useless evidence about syllabus match, so it is worth testing the second separately.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Mainland communities where a named syllabus specialist is rarely available locally at all. This is where searching by code across the whole online pool replaces a choice between two people who both teach something adjacent.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The island: Al Bateen, Al Mushrif and Al Rawdah

Long-established schools running Cambridge and Edexcel programmes. Students we support attend schools across this cluster, and the first thing we ask any family here is which syllabus code and tier the school has entered, because that is what a tutor is being matched against.

  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Al Muna Academy

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas Island

The mainland corridor, with the widest spread of curricula and the thinnest local coverage per syllabus code. Families here benefit most from a credential search that is not limited by who is willing to drive, because the alternative is accepting an adjacent specialism.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Raha International School
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Noya British School

Saadiyat, Al Reem and the newer communities

Newer schools with changing intakes, where families frequently arrive mid-course and hire under time pressure. The verification sequence on this page takes an afternoon and prevents the two mismatches that cost a term: wrong board and wrong syllabus variant.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Mamoura British Academy

Schools are named only as context for the Abu Dhabi secondary market. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or relationship to any school listed, and names no school as a client.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the code and tier with the school first

Before any provider is contacted, get the syllabus code and the Core or Extended entry in writing for each subject. That one email prevents the two most expensive mismatches in this market: preparation for the wrong board's paper structure, and preparation beyond a grade ceiling that is already fixed.

  2. 02

    Ask the permit question directly

Ask whether the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit and ask to see it. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, the service states a two-working-day completion time, and the eligibility categories are broad, so there is no reasonable obstacle to holding one.

  3. 03

Test the subject claim with three questions

What are the papers for this code and what is each worth? Where do most students lose marks on it? What would the first three sessions cover? Precise answers demonstrate the syllabus has been read. General answers about the subject tell you it has not.

  4. 04

Take a trial lesson with a real question in it

The trial is a full session, not a consultation, and it ends with a past-paper question attempted, marked against the published mark scheme and explained. No card details are taken to book it. Watch whether your child works more than they listen.

  5. 05

    Put the arrangement in writing

The weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, what you receive after each session, the short-notice cancellation position, and what happens if the match does not work. A documented arrangement is what makes a replacement quick instead of a negotiation.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Credentials stated, not implied

Each tutor profile names the qualification, the boards taught and the syllabus codes worked with. We will tell you a tutor's permit position rather than leaving you to assume it, and we do not describe anyone as an examiner unless the board, subject, series and year can be stated.

No borrowed authority

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or endorsement from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, operates no UAE centre, and says so on the page. Regulators are named here to explain what they govern.

Matched to the code, not the subject

A tutor is matched against Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 rather than against the word chemistry, because the paper structures and mark schemes differ. For scarce codes such as 0607 or 0478, online delivery is what makes a genuine specialist available at all.

The tier checked before the money

The first question in the first session is which tier the school has entered the student for. A Core entry caps the grade regardless of how well the student is taught, and entry deadlines sit months before the papers. Nobody should pay for tuition above a ceiling they did not know about.

A hard line on the student's own work

Tutors teach, mark and give feedback on what the student has written. They do not write, redraft to completion or produce coursework, internal assessments or extended essays. In a market where one provider sells completed internal assessments outright, this line is a differentiator rather than an assumption.

No official materials republished

We do not host or supply past papers, mark schemes, grade boundary tables or syllabus documents. Those belong to the boards, and a tutor should work from the current official version through the board's own site or your child's school.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does it mean for an IGCSE tutor to be certified in the UAE?+

It can mean three different things, and only one is a legal requirement. The requirement is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. The second is a teaching qualification such as QTS or a PGCE, which proves training in classroom teaching rather than knowledge of your child's board. The third is examiner experience, which is a claim about a past role. Ask which of the three is being claimed, because providers use the single word to cover all of them.

Is there an official IGCSE tutor certification anywhere?+

No. Cambridge International does not issue a certificate to private tutors and neither does Pearson. There is no IGCSE tutoring qualification, no public register of approved individual tutors, and no authority that inspects a one-to-one lesson. What exists is the UAE work permit, generic teaching qualifications, and subject degrees. So the only useful test of subject competence available to a parent is to ask what the papers are for your child's syllabus code and what each one is worth, then listen to how precisely the question is answered.

How do I check a tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit?+

Ask the tutor directly and ask to see it. MoHRE's own service is listed as private tutor licensing, with a two-working-day completion time and no fee stated, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system. Because the permit is free, quick to obtain and open to a broad set of categories including school teachers, employees, unemployed residents and university students, a willing tutor has little reason not to hold one. A long explanation of why it is unnecessary is itself informative.

Does the private tutor permit cost anything in the UAE?+

No. The private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's service page for it lists no fees alongside a two-working-day completion time. That is consistent across every official source checked for this page. Anyone telling you the permit is expensive, or using its cost to justify a higher rate, is mistaken. On the other side of it, individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted as unverified.

Can a university student legally tutor IGCSE in Abu Dhabi?+

Yes, with the permit. University students are expressly named among the eligible applicants for the MoHRE private tuition work permit, alongside registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals and school students aged 15 to 18. So the legal question is answered by whether they hold the permit, not by their age or occupation. The separate question is competence: a strong undergraduate may be excellent for Year 10 content and poor at paper technique, which is what the three subject questions on this page are designed to expose.

Should I insist on a tutor with QTS or a PGCE?+

Insist on it where the problem is how your child answers rather than what they know. Teacher training is specifically about explanation, sequencing and assessment, and those are the skills that fix command-word failure, unshown working and abandoned evaluation. Where the problem is genuine content depth at A-Level in Physics or Further Mathematics, a strong subject degree may matter more. In Computer Science and ICT, a trained teacher usually beats a professional developer, because the mark scheme credits notation as well as working code.

Are examiner-trained tutors worth the higher rate?+

Sometimes, and only when the claim is specific. Where someone has genuinely marked a board's scripts recently in the relevant subject, they know what the middle of a band looks like, which is hard to learn any other way. Ask for the board, the subject, the series and the year. What examiner experience never means is access to unreleased papers, to boundaries before publication, or to anything a school cannot see, and any provider implying otherwise should be treated with scepticism. We do not describe a tutor as an examiner unless those four details can be stated.

Does a tutor need a separate permit to teach online?+

The permit framework covers paid private tuition rather than a particular medium, so a tutor providing lessons to a family in the UAE should hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit regardless of whether the lesson happens over video. The permit carries a code of conduct that applies either way. Where a tutor is based outside the UAE entirely, the position is different and depends on their own jurisdiction, which is one reason we disclose where a tutor is based before you book rather than leaving the delivery location vague.

What qualification should an IGCSE science tutor hold?+

Subject knowledge at the level is a given; the differentiator is specific experience of the practical or alternative-to-practical component on your child's syllabus code, because that component is assessed differently between Cambridge and Pearson and is where unprepared students lose a concentrated block of marks. Ask how it is assessed on that code and what the common errors are. A tutor who answers with variable control, specific sources of error and the exact conventions the mark scheme credits has the relevant competence, whatever the certificate says.

How do I tell whether a tutor really knows my child's syllabus code?+

Three questions, asked before any payment. What are the papers for this code and what is each one worth? Where do most students lose marks on that paper? What would you cover in the first three sessions? Precise answers that reference objective weightings, command words and specific question types show the syllabus has been read. General answers about the subject show it has not. A fourth question helps for tiered subjects: what does the Core entry cap the grade at, and which topics appear only on Extended papers?

What are the assessment objectives in an IGCSE subject?+

They are the published categories a subject's marks are allocated against, typically covering knowledge and recall, applying knowledge to unfamiliar situations, and analysing, evaluating or handling data, with weightings that differ per syllabus. This is why reading the textbook twice often fails to move a grade: it practises one objective while the lost marks sit in another. The exact split for your child's code is stated in the board's published syllabus document, which is where a tutor should be working from rather than from memory.

What is the difference between Core and Extended entry?+

On several Cambridge syllabuses the papers are tiered, and the tier decides the highest grade available. Core papers cover less content and cap the grade; Extended papers carry additional topics and the full range. A student entered for Core cannot reach the top grades however well they are taught, which makes the tier the most consequential administrative fact about an entry. Ask the school in writing which tier applies per subject, and ask what evidence would support a move and by when, because entry deadlines close months before the papers.

Can a tutoring company hold a KHDA or ADEK licence?+

A business with premises and staff can hold an educational services permit for a training institute from the relevant emirate authority, which involves initial approval, a limited window to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal ahead of expiry. That is a document issued to a specific entity with a specific address. It is not a tutor accreditation and it says nothing about an individual online tutor. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no UAE premises, and is not approved or endorsed by any UAE authority or exam board.

What should the first session show me about a tutor's competence?+

Four things. Whether the opening ten minutes are spent finding out what your child can already do rather than explaining. Whether your child works more than they listen. Whether a mistake gets corrected by the tutor or found by the student with a question. And whether the session had one objective your child could state afterwards in a sentence. Add one test of honesty: ask what the realistic outcome is. A marks-to-boundary estimate with a note that boundaries move per series is the right answer; a promised grade is not.

Is a tutor who teaches at my child's school allowed to tutor them privately?+

Press reporting on Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules describes a prohibition on school staff providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and notes that teachers tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That reporting is secondary, so check ADEK's current published policy rather than treating this as authoritative. The underlying principle holds either way: the person who sets and marks your child's assessments should not be paid to prepare them for them.

Ask the five questions, then watch one lesson

Certification in this market is a word doing four jobs at once, and the way through it is not a longer list of credentials but a shorter list of questions. Confirm the syllabus code and tier with the school in writing. Ask any provider to show the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Ask what the papers are for that code and what each is worth. Ask where students lose marks on it. Then take one trial lesson containing a real past-paper question, marked against the published mark scheme, with the lost mark explained. Ours is free, takes no card details, and is delivered one-to-one over live video to your Abu Dhabi home screen.
