IGCSE Exam Preparation in Abu Dhabi

IGCSE exam preparation in Abu Dhabi runs into one arithmetic problem that no provider's rate card answers: a candidate sits eight or nine subjects and almost no family can fund one-to-one support in all of them. This page works through the allocation instead of the rate. Which five subjects the Ministry of Education equivalency rule makes non-negotiable, what each subject realistically needs in hours, and what the market charges in AED. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Allocation first: which subjects to fund when nine are examined
  • Market AED bands quoted with the source and the month they were read
  • Cambridge and Pearson differences that change the plan, not just the branding
  • One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; no home visits in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Nine subjects, one budget

An Abu Dhabi family looking for IGCSE exam preparation is usually holding a statement of entry with eight or nine subjects on it and a quotation for one. The rate on the quotation is the least interesting thing in the conversation. At published market bands of roughly AED 150 to 450 an hour for qualified to specialist online tuition, funding weekly one-to-one work in nine subjects for a full exam term is not a decision most households will make, and it is not one they should have to. The real question is which subjects get the hours.

There is a rule that makes part of that decision for you, and most providers in this market never mention it. For the British track, Ministry of Education equivalency asks for five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among those five, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One widely ranking competitor page publishes a six-subject figure. The sourced number is five.

That rule reframes the budget. Five subjects have to clear a floor. The rest matter for school progression and for university subject requirements rather than for equivalency. So the allocation question splits in two: which five are safely above the floor and which are not, and separately, which subjects are needed at a high grade for the sixth-form course your child intends to take. A subject that is secure on both counts does not need funding this term however much the household worries about it.

The board matters to the plan as well. Cambridge International runs June and November series and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, stating that it is essential to use the correct timetable version for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, and publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, which is why a plan should link the official live timetable rather than copy dates that can be revised. Where a household has children on both boards, the two calendars will not align.

What follows is the allocation worked through: the hours each subject type genuinely needs, the five-subject protection list, what the board changes, where group teaching saves money honestly and where it does not, and how practical science is assessed for a candidate taught online. Every AED figure is a market observation from October 2026 with the kind of source it came from named, and none of them is IB Gram's price list.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Spend on IGCSE preparation behaves differently depending on when it happens, and the three stages below have different cost-per-grade profiles for an Abu Dhabi family planning across years rather than weeks.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 and option choices

The cheapest intervention in the whole sequence is getting the option block right. A candidate who takes nine subjects including three sciences and two languages has a workload that converts directly into tutoring demand two years later. Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests, available in March, May and October, give a dated external reading before the choices are made.

Abu Dhabi timetables also carry Arabic and Islamic education alongside the licensed international curriculum, which is a genuine addition to the Year 9 load rather than a substitution. Families who account for that when choosing options usually need fewer funded hours in Year 11.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

IGCSE Year 10

The year where an hour of teaching is worth most and costs the same. Content is being met for the first time, there is room for consolidation, and a gap closed here does not reappear as a technique problem under exam pressure. One subject at one session a week across a year is a smaller total than three subjects crammed into a final term.

Few families in this emirate buy in Year 10, which is why the Year 11 market is as busy and as expensive as it is. Where a household can only fund one year of support across the two, the arithmetic favours the earlier one unless a specific grade requirement has already slipped.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE Year 11 and the exam term

The year the search happens in. Spend here is triage: a marked paper per subject, a ranking by recoverable marks per hour, and funding for the two or three subjects that top the list. Hours bought after the entry deadline cannot change the tier, which narrows what is available to change.

The June series is the one most Abu Dhabi Year 11 candidates sit, and the constraint has the same shape every year: entries close in the spring, months ahead of the first paper, and the date that actually binds you is the one printed on the statement of entry the school issues rather than any general deadline. Pearson's November route shows the same lead time from the other end of the year, with a final timetable running late October to 19 November 2026. Whatever series your child sits, the entry closes well before the paper and fixes the tier the plan has to work with.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the subjects Abu Dhabi families most often fund, with the hours each typically needs for a one-grade move in the exam year. Treat the hour figures as planning estimates drawn from how these papers behave, not as promises about any individual candidate, and confirm syllabus codes against the statement of entry.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Extended and Higher tier

Usually the first subject funded and usually the right call, because a large share of its lost marks are method and working marks rather than knowledge. Twelve to twenty hours across a term is a realistic block, split between non-calculator and calculator papers.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Extended

Needs more hours than Mathematics for the same movement, because electricity, waves and the practical paper each behave differently. Fifteen to twenty-five hours is typical, and the practical or alternative-to-practical component is worth planning separately.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Extended

Moles arithmetic, ionic equations and organic naming are finite and therefore efficient to fund. Candidates often need fewer hours here than they expect, around twelve to eighteen, provided the arithmetic foundation is intact.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Extended

The highest hour count per grade of the three sciences because the content volume is largest and the marks sit in precise terminology. Twenty hours upwards, which is why it is often the science a family decides not to fund.

English First Language (0500 / 4EA1)

First Language

Hours convert into marks through marked timed writing rather than through teaching, so the cost profile is unusual: fewer, longer-spaced sessions with substantial marking between them work better than weekly contact.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

Efficient to fund because the exercises are predictable and the discipline they test, close reading and summary within a word ceiling, responds quickly. Eight to fifteen hours is often enough to move a grade.

Business Studies (0450 / 4BS1)

Core and Extended

Analysis and evaluation marks are the target and they are habit-based, so short repeated drills are cheaper than content teaching. Ten to fifteen hours, concentrated on case-study response structure.

Economics (0455 / 4EC1)

Core and Extended

Diagram accuracy plus data-response discipline. Both are drillable, which keeps the hour count low at around ten to fifteen, and both transfer directly into AS Level if that is the intended route.

Additional Mathematics and further maths options

Where the school offers it

Rarely the right place for a constrained budget unless a sixth-form entry requirement depends on it. Where it is funded, it should be funded alongside the main Mathematics paper rather than instead of it.

Arabic and Islamic Education

As required by the school

Mandatory alongside the licensed international curriculum, and explicitly not counted among the five subjects the Ministry of Education equivalency rule requires. That makes them a school-progression priority rather than an equivalency one, which changes where they sit in a ranked budget.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

There are three realistic shapes for IGCSE exam support in this market and they differ by an order of magnitude in cost per student. All of ours run over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Funded core: two or three subjects, one-to-one

The shape most constrained budgets should buy. Two or three subjects chosen on evidence, one session a week each through the exam term, with marked work between sessions. The remaining subjects are supported by the school and by a study plan rather than by paid hours, and the family knows which is which.

  • Subjects chosen from marked papers, not from the household's worry ranking
  • One session weekly per funded subject, with marked work between
  • A written note of which subjects are deliberately unfunded
  • Reviewed once at the halfway point, with hours movable between subjects

Two-to-one for siblings or same-subject pairs

Two students in the same subject and tier, taught together, usually siblings or two candidates from the same school. Per student this lands well below the one-to-one band, and for content-led work the loss is small. For marked-script work it is larger, because two scripts need two different conversations.

  • Same subject, same tier, similar current mark range
  • Content and technique taught jointly; marking returned individually
  • Cost per student materially lower than one-to-one
  • Not suitable where the two candidates' scripts fail differently

Diagnostic only, no block

A single marked paper and a written allocation note per subject, bought once, with no ongoing commitment. Families use this to decide where school support is sufficient and where it is not. It is the cheapest useful purchase on this page and it frequently results in fewer funded hours than expected.

  • One timed paper per subject, marked against the published scheme
  • A marks-per-topic sheet comparable across subjects
  • A written ranking by recoverable marks per hour
  • No obligation to book a block afterwards

01

What nine subjects would cost, and what to fund instead

Start with the figure nobody writes down. At published market bands of AED 150 to 450 an hour for qualified to specialist online tuition, weekly one-to-one support in nine subjects across a twenty-week exam term is 180 hours. That is a number in the tens of thousands of dirhams and it is not a sensible purchase even for a household that could make it, because several of those subjects would be receiving hours they did not need while the school was already covering them adequately.

The alternative is not cheaper tutoring, it is fewer funded subjects chosen properly. Three subjects at one session a week for twenty weeks is 60 hours. A diagnostic across all nine, bought once, is nine to twelve hours. Together that is roughly 70 hours against 180, and the three subjects chosen on evidence will usually move more than nine subjects shallowly supported, because the hours land where marks are reachable.

The group option is real and worth pricing honestly rather than dismissing. Market group rates run around AED 45 to 150 per student per hour, which is a genuine saving, and group revision does the job it is good at: broad syllabus coverage for a cohort at a similar level. What it cannot do is work from one candidate's marked script. For a subject where the gap is coverage, group is the right purchase. For a subject where the gap is this candidate's specific technique, it is not.

The table applies all of this to the three scenarios Abu Dhabi families actually choose between. AED figures are market bands from October 2026, applied arithmetically, not quotations.

02

Which five subjects have to clear the floor

Ministry of Education equivalency is the single most useful thing an Abu Dhabi family can know before allocating a tutoring budget, and it is absent from almost every competing page in this market. On the British track, candidates must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must also show either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or above or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects.

Read that against a nine-subject entry and the budget sorts itself into tiers. Five subjects must clear a floor that is low but absolute. Separately, the subjects your child needs at a strong grade for a particular sixth-form course have their own, higher requirement set by the school. A subject that is neither in the protected five nor a sixth-form prerequisite is the first candidate to be left on school support, whatever the household's instinct says.

The American-track figures are published too and are worth knowing if a sibling is on that curriculum: English proficiency through a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics through at least 450 in the SAT Math test. For the IB there is no points threshold we can source, so this page publishes none; verify any IB figure on the Ministry's own site before relying on it.

Equivalency is also not something a tutoring provider performs or secures. It is a process run by the authority, with its own documents and channels, and any provider implying they can obtain it or that tutoring is required for it is making a false claim about a regulatory process.

Cambridge or Pearson: what the board changes about the plan

Families often assume the board is a detail the school chose and nothing more. It changes four practical things about an exam-preparation plan: when the papers are sat, which timetable applies, how tiering is labelled, and how far ahead the dates can be trusted. A household with two children on different boards has two calendars, and planning against the wrong one is a mistake that cannot be corrected afterwards.

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level exams in June and November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. For the June series what matters is the shape of the lead time rather than one memorised date: entries close in the spring, months before the first paper, with the binding deadline printed on the centre's statement of entry, results released in August and certificates following later in the year. The November series repeats the same pattern a few months behind and is the realistic resit route, so a June entry and a November fallback can be planned together from the start.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, including one for the November series still months away, which is the reason to link the live official timetable rather than restate dates that may be revised.

For the budget, the consequence is sequencing. Work backwards from the entry deadline, not from the exam, because entry fixes the tier and the series. Then check which timetable version applies before fixing session slots in the exam fortnight.

Year 10 money works harder than Year 11 money

  • Year 10: content closed while it is still being met, and it stays closed
  • Year 11: the same gap plus the habit built around it, at the same hourly rate
  • A diagnostic in Year 11 is cheap and reliably reduces the hours bought after it
  • Concentrated Year 11 spending is right when a hard requirement has already slipped

The least popular finding on this page is that the cheapest IGCSE exam preparation happens a year before anyone searches for it. In Year 10 a gap can be closed while content is still being met for the first time, and a closed gap stays closed. In Year 11 the same gap has usually become a technique problem as well, because the candidate has spent a year writing answers around the thing they did not understand, and now both the knowledge and the habit need work.

The arithmetic is plain. One subject at one session a week across Year 10, say thirty hours, is a smaller total than three subjects funded in a final term at sixty hours, and it is spent when each hour returns more. Families who fund Year 10 arrive in Year 11 needing diagnosis and a short targeted block rather than a broad rescue. Very few do it, which is exactly why the Year 11 market in this emirate is as crowded and as expensive as it is.

That does not help a household already in Year 11, so here is the version that does. Fund the diagnostic, fund two or three subjects, and treat the rest as school-supported. Then, if there is a younger sibling in Year 9 or 10, spend there next year rather than repeating the final-term rescue. The second time through the same household, the bill is usually smaller and the outcome calmer.

The one case where Year 11 spending genuinely outperforms is a tier or sixth-form requirement that has already slipped and has a hard deadline. There, concentrated hours in a single subject are the correct purchase even at the worst price in the year.

05

What the school already provides, and what you would be paying for twice

Abu Dhabi schools vary widely in the revision support they run, and the variation is worth mapping before a single hour is bought. Several schools timetable substantial revision programmes, run full mock cycles with marked scripts returned, hold clinics for specific papers, and publish a study-leave schedule with staff availability. Where that is happening, buying broad content coverage privately duplicates it at market rates.

The questions to ask the school are short. Will marked mock scripts be returned, or only grades. Are there subject clinics in study leave, and for which papers. Who can a candidate approach for help on a specific past-paper question after study leave starts. Is there a revision timetable for the exam fortnight. The answers tell you precisely where the gap is, and the gap is what a budget should cover.

In practice the thing schools rarely provide is individual diagnosis from a marked script. Thirty students in a set makes it impractical, not negligent. That is the service worth buying privately, and it is also the cheapest thing on this page: one paper per subject, marked, with a written note. Content coverage, by contrast, is the thing schools do provide and the thing most commonly bought twice.

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, so your child's school sits under its oversight and its inspection reporting. That tells you something about the school; it does not tell you whether your child's Physics script is losing marks to method omission. Only the script does.

06

Science practicals when the teaching happens over video

  • Which component applies is fixed by the entry, not by the tutor
  • Method writing, precision, graph work and conclusions are all taught well over video
  • Bench time and apparatus handling belong in the school laboratory
  • Most of the marks in these papers sit in recording, processing and evaluation

This is the question Abu Dhabi families ask most often about online preparation and the one competitors answer least clearly. The practical component of an IGCSE science is assessed by the school and the board, not by a tutor, and the candidate sits whatever component their entry specifies, commonly a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper depending on the syllabus and the centre. Nothing a tutor does changes which component applies; the school's entry does.

What preparation for those components actually involves is largely writing, and writing is well suited to video teaching. Candidates lose marks for describing a method another student could not follow, for recording results to inconsistent precision, for plotting a graph with a poorly chosen scale, for drawing a line that follows the points rather than the trend, and for stating a conclusion the data does not support. All of those are correctable on a shared screen with a past-paper question in front of both people.

What video cannot do is replace time at a bench. Handling apparatus, measuring, and the physical judgement that comes with repetition belong in the school laboratory, and a tutor should say so plainly rather than imply otherwise. The honest division of labour is that the school supplies the practical experience and the tutor works on the recording, processing and evaluation marks, which is where most of the paper's marks sit anyway.

Confirm with the school which practical component your child is entered for, because it differs between syllabuses and between centres, and the preparation differs with it.

07

Coursework, feedback and the line a tutor does not cross

Where an IGCSE subject carries internally assessed work, your child is the author and the only author. A tutor may teach the underlying skill, explain what each assessment criterion rewards, ask questions about a plan, and give feedback on a draft the student produced. No text is supplied, nothing is edited to completion, and no model answer is handed over to be adapted into a submission.

That boundary is worth stating on a cost page because exam-term pressure is when the request gets made and when a provider short of scruples is most willing to be paid for crossing it. Boards treat work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice and the consequence lands on the student rather than on the helper. At least one provider in this market openly sells finished internal assessments; a family paying for legitimate help deserves to know the difference before they ask for it.

The auditable version is simple and costs nothing to run. The student sends the draft they wrote. The tutor returns questions and criterion references rather than replacement sentences. Every version is kept, so if the school asks how the work was supported there is a trail that answers honestly. The same trail protects the candidate and the tutor.

Where the deadline has already passed, the mark is fixed and the hours belong to the written papers. A provider who takes a booking against a closed component without saying so is selling calendar time, which is why the question is worth asking directly of anyone quoting you.

08

Delivery, and why a wider pool costs less than a nearer one

Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard, the paper on screen and a recording the candidate can rewatch. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visiting is an India-only service. On a page about cost, the argument for that is mostly arithmetic rather than preference.

Travel sits inside an in-home fee whether or not it appears as a line on the invoice, which is why market rates for visiting work run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 450 for online tuition, and why visits are commonly quoted with a two-hour minimum. For a household in Al Samha or Hydra Village, the fee difference and the session-length minimum together mean the same money buys noticeably fewer, longer sessions than it would online.

The second effect is on the match. Restricting the search to tutors who can reach your community at a fixed hour makes subject depth a matter of local supply, and in specialist IGCSE subjects local supply in this emirate is genuinely thin. Removing the journey means the person teaching Physics 0625 Extended is chosen because they mark that paper, which is the variable that decides whether the hours work.

The limit is coverage, and it is disclosed before any booking. If no tutor who teaches your child's exact paper has hours in the window you need, you are told that and offered a named alternative with its trade-off stated: a specialist working Gulf Standard Time from another country, a subject split across two tutors with one shared progress record, reallocation to a subject where the match is right, or a later start. Filling a slot with a generalist is how exam-term money disappears.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where a family lives changes what support costs in practice, because travel, slot timing and local tutor supply all vary across the emirate. These are the communities that most often raise a specific cost question.

Al Shamkha and Zayed City

A long run from the island, so any visiting arrangement carries real travel inside the fee. Households here tend to compare the cost of two online sessions against one in-home visit and reach the obvious conclusion themselves.

Baniyas

Large year groups at nearby schools mean group revision is widely available and cheap at market group rates, which makes the useful question whether individual diagnosis is needed on top rather than instead.

Mussafah

Working patterns here push sessions late, and families often ask for two short weekday slots rather than a weekend block. Short frequent sessions also happen to suit exam-technique work, so the constraint is not a compromise.

Al Rahba and Al Bahia

On the northern edge of the emirate with a long school run already absorbed into the day. The budget question is usually how many subjects can be funded once the commute has taken the late afternoon.

Al Samha

Close enough to the Dubai boundary that families compare provision across both emirates. Tutor supply in specialist IGCSE subjects is thin locally, which is the clearest case for widening the pool rather than narrowing it to a drive radius.

Al Khalidiyah

Central and well served by tuition centres, so group pricing is competitive and visible. That makes it the area where the group-versus-one-to-one comparison is most often asked as a straight cost question.

Hydra Village and Al Ghadeer

Peripheral communities where a visiting tutor would spend more time driving than teaching. Households here usually arrive having already decided on video delivery and want the subject match discussed instead.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the statement of entry

The single most useful document is the statement of entry, because it settles the board, the syllabus codes, the tiers and the series. With that plus a note of which subjects worry you, we can say what the allocation problem looks like before anyone discusses rates.

  2. 02

    One free diagnostic lesson

A single sixty-minute session at no charge with the tutor you would keep, taken before any payment. It is one lesson rather than a trial period, and it is used to check the subject match and to set the first timed paper for marking.

  3. 03

    Diagnose broadly, then rank

One timed paper per subject under consideration, marked against the published mark scheme, producing a marks-per-topic sheet and a ranking by recoverable marks per hour. The ranking is what the funding decision is made from, and it regularly closes subjects down rather than opening them.

  4. 04

Fund two or three subjects, name the rest

Hours go to the top of the ranking. The subjects left on school support are named in writing, with the reason, so the decision is explicit and reviewable rather than an omission nobody mentioned. The protected five under the equivalency rule are flagged separately.

  5. 05

    Review at the halfway point

Topic sheets at the midpoint show which funded subject is responding. Hours move between subjects on that evidence, or stop. Where the evidence says the plan should shrink, that is the recommendation given, in writing, with the sheets attached.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The allocation is the service

Most providers sell hours in whichever subject a parent names first. The work that changes an outcome for a nine-subject candidate is deciding which two or three subjects those hours belong in, and that decision is made from marked papers rather than from the order of the family's worries.

The five-subject rule is published here, correctly

Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. A widely ranking competitor states six. Getting it right changes which subjects a family protects.

Group teaching is priced honestly rather than dismissed

Market group rates of roughly AED 45 to 150 per student per hour are a real saving and group revision does broad coverage well. What it cannot do is work from one candidate's script, so this page says which gap each format actually fits instead of selling against the cheaper one.

Board dates come from the boards

Cambridge's six administrative zones and June and November series key dates, and Pearson's May/June and November series with provisional timetables, are taken from the boards' own published guidance and linked rather than restated as settled fact. Dates that can be revised are described as revisable.

The coursework boundary is published, not implied

A tutor teaches the skill, explains the criteria and gives feedback on your child's own draft, keeping every version so the trail can be shown to the school. Where a component is already submitted, you are told the mark is fixed and the hours redirected.

No regulator claims, no invented figures

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson, and claims none. Every AED band on this page is labelled as a market observation from October 2026 with the kind of source it came from.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

My child sits nine IGCSEs in Abu Dhabi. How many subjects should we actually pay to tutor?+

Two or three, chosen from marked papers rather than from instinct, with a broad diagnostic across the rest. At market bands of AED 150 to 450 an hour, nine subjects at one weekly session across a twenty-week term is 180 hours and a bill in the tens of thousands of dirhams, much of it duplicating what the school already covers. Three funded subjects plus a one-off diagnostic across all nine is roughly 70 hours, and the hours land where the marks are actually reachable.

Which five subjects matter most for UAE certificate equivalency on the British track?+

The Ministry of Education requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among those five. A further requirement is one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Which five your child uses is a decision worth making with the school, because it determines which grades must clear a floor and which only matter for sixth-form entry.

Is group IGCSE revision in Abu Dhabi worth it at the lower price, or a false economy?+

Neither, once you separate the two jobs. Group revision at market rates of roughly AED 45 to 150 per student per hour does broad syllabus coverage well, and for a subject where your child's gap is simply coverage it is the correct purchase. What it cannot do is respond to one candidate's marked script, so for a technique fault specific to your child it buys attendance rather than improvement. Many families get the best value by grouping the coverage subjects and funding one-to-one only where the script says something individual is wrong.

How many hours does one grade of movement usually take in an IGCSE subject?+

It varies by subject rather than by candidate temperament. Mathematics often responds in twelve to twenty hours because its losses are patterned method and working marks. English as a Second Language can move in eight to fifteen because the exercises are predictable. Chemistry sits around twelve to eighteen where the arithmetic foundation is intact. Biology is the slowest of the common subjects at twenty hours upwards, because the content volume is largest. Those are planning estimates from how the papers behave, not predictions for an individual, and a marked paper refines them in week one.

Does it matter for our planning whether the school uses Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel?+

Yes, in four practical ways. The series available differ, with Cambridge running June and November and Pearson running May/June and November. Cambridge allocates centres to one of six administrative zones and states the correct zone timetable must be used. Pearson publishes provisional timetables before each series, so dates can be revised before the final version. And tiering is labelled differently, Core and Extended against Foundation and Higher. A household with children on both boards is planning against two calendars that will not align.

Why is Year 10 tutoring better value than Year 11 tutoring at the same hourly rate?+

Because in Year 10 a gap can be closed while the content is still being met for the first time, and a closed gap stays closed. By Year 11 the same gap has usually acquired a habit around it, as the candidate has spent a year writing answers that avoid the thing they did not understand, so both the knowledge and the habit need hours. One subject across Year 10 is a smaller total than three subjects rescued in a final term, and each hour returns more. Very few families do it, which is why the Year 11 market is so busy.

How are IGCSE science practicals assessed if my child is taught online?+

The practical component is assessed by the school and the board according to your child's entry, commonly a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper depending on the syllabus and centre, and nothing a tutor does changes which applies. Preparation for those papers is mostly writing: method description another student could follow, consistent precision, sensible graph scales, a line of best fit rather than a dot-to-dot, and conclusions the data supports. All of that is taught well on a shared screen. Bench time and apparatus handling belong in the school laboratory.

Can a tutoring provider help us get Ministry of Education equivalency for IGCSE certificates?+

No, and any provider implying otherwise is misdescribing a regulatory process. Equivalency is run by the Ministry and the emirate's attestation channel, with their own documents, fees and timelines, and no tutoring company performs, accelerates or guarantees it. What this page can do is state the published requirement accurately so you know which grades have to clear a floor. Tutoring is also not required for equivalency; the requirement is about grades held, not about how they were prepared for.

What should I ask our school before spending anything on exam preparation?+

Four questions, all short. Will marked mock scripts be returned or only grades. Are there subject clinics during study leave, and for which papers. Who can my child approach with a specific past-paper question once study leave starts. Is there a published revision timetable for the exam fortnight. The answers show exactly where the school's provision stops, and that gap is what a budget should cover. The commonest wasted purchase in this emirate is broad content coverage that the school was already providing.

Our child is already entered at Core when Extended looks achievable. What now?+

Check whether the entry window is still open with the school, because once entries are filed the tier is generally fixed for that series. The Cambridge June series illustrates the gap: entries close in the spring, months before the exam fortnight, and the date that binds you is the one on your centre's statement of entry rather than anything published as a general deadline. Pearson's November 2026 timetable, running late October to 19 November 2026, makes the same point from the other side of the year. Where the entry is settled, the plan has to target the best outcome available on that paper, and the conversation shifts to whether a later series in that subject is worth entering. Where there is still time, diagnose first, then decide the tier, then enter.

Do visiting tutors cost more in Abu Dhabi than online tutors, and by how much?+

Published market figures put in-home one-to-one work at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the fee, against AED 150 to 450 for qualified to specialist online tuition, and visits are commonly quoted with a two-hour minimum so the journey is worth making. For a household in a peripheral community the practical gap is wider than the headline rates suggest, because the minimum session length is set by the drive rather than by what the work needs. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; this is delivered online.

How quickly can a specialist be matched for a subject like Computer Science 0478?+

Expect one to two weeks for the narrower specialist subjects, against a few days for Mathematics, where cover is widest. If nobody who teaches your child's exact paper has hours in the window you need, you are told that rather than matched to whoever is free, and offered a named alternative with its trade-off: a specialist working Gulf Standard Time from another country, the subject split across two tutors with one shared progress record, the hours reallocated to a better-matched subject, or a later start with the right person.

Can two children in the same household share sessions to bring the cost down?+

Yes where they are in the same subject and tier and their current marks are in a similar range, which brings the cost per student well below the one-to-one band. Content and technique teach jointly without much loss. Marking does not, because two scripts fail in different places and each needs its own conversation, so marked work is returned individually. Where the two candidates' scripts show different faults, paying for two shorter individual sessions usually beats one shared longer one, even though the invoice looks worse.

Is there any point buying tutoring two weeks before the first IGCSE paper?+

Only with a narrowed target. Two weeks will not add content and should not try to. What it can do is fix question selection and timing so the final questions stop being blank, rehearse command terms so full-knowledge answers stop scoring partial marks, build a salvage routine for a question that has gone wrong, and run short daily paper sections with immediate correction. Priced by the session rather than as a block, that is a reasonable purchase. Sold as a crash course that will transform a grade, it is not.

Do you publish your own hourly rate on this page?+

No. Every AED figure here is a market observation from October 2026, drawn from providers' published pages and from rate trackers, and labelled as such. Our own figure depends on the subject, the tier, the number of subjects and the hours, and it is quoted after the diagnostic because a quotation given before anyone has seen a marked paper is a guess with a decimal point. What you can hold us to beforehand is the shape: a free first lesson, a diagnostic with its own end point, and blocks with stated end dates.

Send the statement of entry first

The decision in front of you is not which tutor to hire. It is which two or three of your child's nine subjects deserve funded hours, and which five have to clear the Ministry of Education floor regardless. The statement of entry answers the first half of that question and a set of marked papers answers the second. Send the entry document and a note of which subjects worry you, take the free diagnostic lesson, and you will get back a ranking by recoverable marks per hour with the unfunded subjects named and the reason written down.
