IB Biology IA Help in Abu Dhabi

IB Biology IA help in Abu Dhabi, delivered live online and one-to-one, works on one thing: your child's own scientific investigation, draft by draft. Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time around Abu Dhabi school hours, and every one ends with written notes naming the criterion worked on, what changed in the draft, and what the student does before the next meeting. You keep the paper trail, so you can see movement rather than take it on trust.

  • Lessons run live over video; there are no home visits in Abu Dhabi
  • Annotations sit on your child's own draft, never on text we supply
  • Written criterion notes after every session, kept by you

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What Abu Dhabi parents are really asking when they search for Biology IA help

Almost every enquiry that reaches us with these words attached has the same shape. A Diploma student at a school in Khalifa City, on Saadiyat, or along the Al Raha corridor has an internal deadline eight to twelve weeks away. There is a research question, some data in a spreadsheet, and a teacher comment that says the analysis needs more depth. Nobody in the house can tell whether that comment is worth two marks or nine, and nobody can tell whether another month of evenings will change it.

That is a measurement problem before it is a Biology problem. The scientific investigation in the current IB Biology guide carries 20% of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level and is marked out of 24 across four criteria. Those criteria are published, the strands inside them are published, and the mark your child's teacher awards is defensible or it is not. A parent who cannot see the criteria is being asked to judge progress by mood, which is why the first session here produces a document rather than a feeling.

The approach on this page is deliberately evidence-first. A tutor reads the existing draft before any teaching happens, marks it against each criterion, and hands back a written breakdown with the mark bands named and the specific sentences or figures that sit behind each one. From that point every session has a target you can check: Research design was weak on the control of confounding variables, here is the revised method, here is what the tutor expects it to be worth now. You are never asked to accept that things are going well.

Abu Dhabi adds its own constraints. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and internal assessment deadlines are set by each school rather than by the regulator or by the IB, so two Diploma students living on the same street in Al Reem can be working to dates three weeks apart. Travel across the island and over the Sheikh Zayed and Mussafah bridges eats the usable part of a weekday evening. Live online sessions remove that problem rather than working around it.

Honesty about scope matters as much as the teaching. A tutor working on a scientific investigation explains biology, questions a method, teaches the statistics, and marks a draft against the criteria. A tutor does not author any sentence of the report, supply figures, or hand over a finished document. The student types every word. That line is not a marketing position; it is what keeps an IB candidate out of a malpractice investigation, and it is stated in writing before the first session runs, in plain terms, so that nobody discovers the boundary halfway through a deadline week.

At a glance

  • The scientific investigation is worth 20% of the Biology grade at SL and HL
  • It is marked out of 24 across four published criteria, six marks each
  • The report has a 3,000-word ceiling; confirm the figure with your school's subject guide
  • Internal deadlines are set by your Abu Dhabi school, not by ADEK or the IB
  • Every session returns written notes naming the criterion and the change made
  • Lessons are delivered live online across the emirate; no tutor is sent to an address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Biology investigation work sits inside a programme, and the programme decides what a session can usefully do. These are the three IB structures Abu Dhabi families most often bring to us when the search term is Biology IA help.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma, where the scientific investigation lives. Biology is taken at Standard or Higher Level, and the investigation is identical in form at both levels: one student-designed piece of practical work, reported in no more than 3,000 words, marked out of 24 by the teacher and subject to IB moderation. Higher Level students carry additional syllabus content and a longer Paper 2, but they are not asked for a larger investigation.

Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts are concentrated in the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, on Saadiyat and Yas, and in a handful of long-established island schools. Several of these schools run the investigation across the end of DP1 and the start of DP2, which means data collection often falls in the hottest months when fieldwork outside is impractical. Laboratory-based or secondary-data designs tend to be the realistic choice.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Where investigation skills are built or missed. MYP Sciences is marked against four criteria, and Criterion B, inquiring and designing, together with Criterion C, processing and evaluating, are the direct ancestors of the Diploma investigation. A student who has written variables, hypotheses and evaluations against those criteria for five years arrives in DP1 able to design. A student who has mostly followed printed method sheets does not.

Abu Dhabi has several IB continuum schools running MYP into the Diploma, alongside British-curriculum schools that place students into DP1 straight from IGCSE. Students arriving from the IGCSE route frequently meet an open-ended practical design for the first time in DP1. We treat that as a specific, teachable gap rather than a weakness, and it is usually four to six sessions of work.

COREAges 16-19 · alongside DP1 and DP2

Diploma core: Extended Essay, TOK and CAS

The core competes with the investigation for the same weeks. A Biology Extended Essay is a different task from the investigation, with its own word limit and its own supervisor, and students who take both on in the same term are usually the ones who run out of time. Mapping the core deadlines against the investigation deadline is often the single most useful hour a DP1 family buys, and it costs nothing in biology content.

Abu Dhabi schools set their own core deadlines and most publish them to parents at the start of DP1. Bring that calendar to the first session. Where a Biology Extended Essay and the investigation share a laboratory technique, there are rules about reusing work between components, and your DP coordinator is the person who confirms what your school permits.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Investigation work rarely arrives alone. These are the subjects Abu Dhabi Diploma families most often pair with Biology support, described by what the assessment actually demands rather than by topic list.

Biology

HL and SL

Four themes, a 36% Paper 1 split between multiple choice and data-based questions, a 44% Paper 2 of structured and extended response, and the 20% investigation. Most marks are lost not on recall but on command terms: outline, explain, suggest and evaluate each want a different shape of answer, and students who revise content without practising the verbs plateau at a 4 or 5.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The common second science in Abu Dhabi Diploma timetables, and the one whose own investigation deadline usually clashes with Biology. Chemistry rewards quantitative processing, so students often bring stronger uncertainty handling to Biology than their Biology teaching gave them. That transfer is worth naming in a session rather than discovering by accident.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Shares physiology content with Biology and runs its own investigation. Abu Dhabi students taking both often reuse a measurement technique such as heart rate or reaction time, which raises a legitimate question about overlap between components. The answer comes from the DP coordinator, and the design can be adjusted early at no cost.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

An interdisciplinary option with a different internal assessment structure from the Biology investigation. Students who switch into or out of it mid-DP1 lose the most time, because the design conventions and the mark allocations are not transferable. A mapping session before the switch is cheaper than a rescue afterwards.

Psychology

HL and SL

Its internal assessment is an experimental study with inferential statistics, so a Biology student taking Psychology has usually met significance testing before their Biology teacher raises it. The two reports have different word limits and different criteria, and treating one as a template for the other costs marks in both.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Where the statistics in a Biology investigation are actually taught. Chi-squared tests of association, correlation coefficients and basic hypothesis testing sit in this course. A Biology student who takes Analysis and Approaches instead may have met none of them formally, which is a predictable four-session gap rather than a sign of weakness.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route most Abu Dhabi students take if they are aiming at engineering or physical sciences. It is stronger on calculus and weaker on applied statistics than Applications and Interpretation, so error bars, standard deviation and test selection usually have to be taught explicitly for the investigation.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Relevant because the investigation is a written report assessed partly on clarity of communication inside each criterion. Students who write well in English A still lose marks in Biology for burying a conclusion in narrative instead of stating it against the data. The fix is structural and takes about two sessions.

Biology Extended Essay

DP core

A separate 4,000-word research task with its own supervisor, frequently running in the same term as the investigation. Support here is process coaching: question focus, source quality, argument structure and the supervisor relationship. No part of the essay is written for the student, and the reflection sessions with the school supervisor remain the student's own.

MYP Sciences

MYP 4-5

The place to fix design skills before DP1 rather than during it. Criterion B asks for a testable hypothesis, variables and a method; Criterion C asks for processing, presentation and evaluation. Students who can do both against the MYP wording arrive in the Diploma needing content teaching rather than a crash course in experimental design.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families buy investigation support, chosen by how much of the task is still open. The honest answer to which one fits is usually decided by the number of weeks left, not by budget.

Weekly one-to-one through the investigation

A fixed slot from research question to submission, typically ten to fourteen weeks. Each session takes one criterion, works on the current draft, and closes with written notes. This is the version where you can see movement week by week, because each set of notes names the mark band the tutor thinks the draft now sits in and why.

  • One recurring 60- or 90-minute slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Written criterion notes issued after each session
  • Draft marked against all four criteria at week one and again before submission
  • Statistics taught on the student's own data, not on textbook examples

A criterion block

Four to six sessions aimed at one named weakness. Research design for a student whose variables are not controlled, or data analysis for a student whose graphs carry no uncertainty. It suits families who already have school feedback they trust and want one thing fixed rather than general supervision. The block ends with a before-and-after marked draft.

  • Scoped against one criterion and its strands
  • Opens and closes with a marked copy of the same draft
  • Useful when the school has already named the problem
  • No open-ended commitment beyond the block

A single pre-submission review

One longer session, usually 90 to 120 minutes, in the final fortnight. The tutor marks the complete draft against all four criteria and returns a written breakdown with the specific strands that are unevidenced. It changes nothing by itself; what it does is tell the student exactly where the remaining hours should go, in writing.

  • Full draft marked against the four criteria
  • Written list of unevidenced strands, ranked by marks at stake
  • No new data collection assumed
  • Suitable where the deadline is under three weeks away

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The evidence a first session produces, and why it comes before any teaching

  • A marked copy of the student's existing draft, annotated by criterion
  • A written note placing each criterion in a mark band, with reasons
  • A list of strands currently carrying no evidence at all
  • A dated plan running back from the school's internal deadline

A first session on a Biology investigation produces four things: a marked copy of the existing draft, a criterion-by-criterion note saying which mark band each criterion currently sits in, a short list of the strands with no evidence behind them at all, and a plan with dates. None of that is teaching. It is diagnosis, and it exists so that the rest of the work can be checked rather than believed.

The reason this matters in Abu Dhabi specifically is that school feedback arrives in very different formats across the emirate. One school issues a filled criterion grid with band descriptors circled. Another returns a paragraph of comments in a shared document. A third gives a predicted mark with no breakdown. A parent comparing a child at Raha International with a cousin at Brighton College is comparing two incompatible reports, which is why an independent marked draft is the only common currency.

The marked draft also settles the most common argument in the house, which is whether the problem is biology or writing. A student who can explain osmosis correctly out loud and still scores in the lowest band for conclusion does not have a content gap. They have a reporting gap, and those are fixed in different ways and in different numbers of hours. Working out which one you are paying for is worth doing before you buy ten sessions of the wrong thing, and it takes one reading of the draft rather than a term of observation.

02

Week by week: what changes in the draft and how you check it

Progress on an investigation is not smooth and it is not visible in a mark until late. The useful measure is whether a named strand moved from unevidenced to evidenced in the student's own text. That is checkable by a parent who has never studied biology, because the tutor's note says which paragraph or figure now carries the evidence and the student can point to it.

The table below is the shape of a twelve-week run, counted forward from a first session. Dates are school-set in Abu Dhabi, so the column that matters is the one naming what comes back to you rather than the week number. A student starting later compresses the sequence rather than skipping stages, and the first thing to go is usually the second round of data collection.

Two warnings about reading a plan like this. A week where nothing appears to change is often the week the research question is being narrowed, which is the highest-value work in the whole task and produces almost no visible text. And a draft that looks finished at week six is usually a draft with a conclusion that restates the data instead of answering the research question, which is a six-mark problem hiding behind a tidy document. Read the plan as a sequence of deliverables rather than a schedule: each stage either produces a document you can hold or it has not happened, and a student who cannot show the processed data at week eight is not eight weeks in regardless of how many sessions have been paid for.

03

The research question decides most of the mark before any data exist

More investigation marks are lost at the research question than anywhere else, and they are lost before a single measurement is taken. A question that names no independent variable, no dependent variable and no range cannot be answered by data, so the design strands have nothing to reward and the conclusion has nothing to answer. Students arrive with questions that are really topics, and teachers often approve them because the topic is sound.

Abu Dhabi adds a practical filter that families rarely consider. Outdoor fieldwork between May and September is genuinely difficult, school laboratory access is timetabled and limited, and anything involving human participants needs consent arranged through the school. A question that would work in a temperate September does not survive an Abu Dhabi one. Secondary-data designs using published datasets are a legitimate route and are frequently the stronger choice, not a fallback.

The practical test is whether the question can be written as a sentence containing a measured variable, a changed variable, five or more levels of that change, and a stated organism, tissue or dataset. If it cannot, no amount of later work rescues the design marks. This is also the cheapest stage to fix: narrowing a question is usually one session, while rescuing a weak one after data collection means collecting data again. The table below takes five questions in the form students genuinely arrive with, says what a marker cannot reward in each, and gives the version that survives. The pattern across all five is the same: add units, add a range, name the subject, and fix the endpoint.

04

The statistics nobody budgeted for, taught on your child's own numbers

The single most common unbudgeted cost in a Biology investigation is statistics. A student taking Analysis and Approaches rather than Applications and Interpretation may have met no formal hypothesis testing at all, and the Biology teacher is not timetabled to teach it. The result is a draft with a mean, a bar chart and no indication of whether the difference is anything more than noise, which is the data analysis criterion losing marks quietly.

Test selection is not a matter of preference. It follows from the design: two independent groups with continuous measurements point one way, categorical counts in a contingency table point another, and two continuous variables measured on the same subjects point a third. The error that costs marks is applying a test of difference to a correlation design, or reporting a significance value without saying what the null hypothesis was.

This is taught on the student's own spreadsheet rather than a textbook example, because the thing that has to survive is their data, with their sample size and their missing values. A student who has calculated standard deviation by hand on their own five repeats, then plotted error bars that overlap, has learned something a worked example cannot deliver: that their own result may not be significant, and that saying so clearly earns marks rather than losing them. An honest null result, properly tested and properly reported, sits in a higher band than an overclaimed difference with no test behind it.

05

Academic honesty, and the Abu Dhabi rule about your child's own teacher

  • A tutor explains, questions, teaches and marks; the student types every word
  • No tutor supplies text, figures, methods or a repaired version of the report
  • Do not pay the teacher who will mark the work, and verify current ADEK rules yourself
  • An authenticity declaration carries the student's name, not the tutor's

The investigation must be the student's own work. A tutor may explain biology, challenge a method, teach statistics, mark a draft against the criteria and say that a conclusion does not answer the research question. A tutor may not author sentences, generate figures, supply a method, or hand back a version of the report with the problems silently repaired. The distinction is not subtle and it is not negotiable: the student's name goes on an authenticity declaration, and a breach is an IB malpractice matter for the candidate.

There is a specific Abu Dhabi dimension that families ask about constantly. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat that as press-reported rather than quoted policy and verify it against the current ADEK document, but the practical advice is simple: do not arrange paid sessions with the teacher who will mark the investigation.

The same reasoning applies to the commercial offers that circulate in Abu Dhabi parent groups, where a completed investigation is sold as a package with a price attached. Buying one puts the candidate's whole Diploma at risk, not just the Biology grade, and schools detect them more often than the sellers admit. What a legitimate tutor produces is a marked copy of your child's draft with the problems named. If anyone offers a finished report instead, the offer itself tells you what you are dealing with.

06

What investigation support costs in the Abu Dhabi market

Market rates here are published by providers in dirhams and vary by a factor of ten, so the number alone tells a parent almost nothing. What changes the figure is who is teaching, whether the hour includes marking a draft outside the session, and whether travel is being paid for. The table below gathers published provider bands rather than quoting a price for this service, and each band is attributed to where it was read in October 2026.

Two patterns are worth knowing before any call. In-home rates in the Abu Dhabi market carry travel inside them, which is why the same tutor's visiting rate sits above their online rate; you are buying the drive across the island as well as the teaching. And monthly packages advertised in the emirate are usually priced on session count rather than on marking, so a package that looks cheaper per hour can include no written feedback at all.

The right question to ask a prospective tutor is not the hourly figure but what arrives in writing afterwards. An hour that ends with a marked draft and a criterion note is a different product from an hour of conversation at the same price. IB Gram's own position is to start with a free trial session, with the conditions stated up front, and to quote only after a draft has been read, because quoting before that means guessing at how much work the task needs.

Online draft work against a visiting tutor, on the same task

IB Gram does not make home visits in Abu Dhabi; one-to-one tuition here is delivered live over video, and home visiting is a service offered only in India. That is a limit worth stating plainly rather than burying, because the honest comparison on investigation work favours the online format for reasons that have nothing to do with price.

Investigation work is document work. The student and the tutor need the same draft open, the same spreadsheet open, and a record of what changed between versions. Screen sharing with version history does that natively; a visiting tutor leans over a laptop and leaves no trail. The other difference is the tutor pool. A family in Al Shamkha choosing from tutors willing to drive to Al Shamkha on a Tuesday is choosing from a short list, and a Biology Higher Level specialist who can mark a scientific investigation may not be on it.

Against that, a visiting tutor is better at presence. A student who will not sit down without an adult in the room benefits from someone physically there, and no video call changes that. Where that is the real problem, the honest answer is that a visiting generalist supervising homework and an online specialist marking the investigation are different purchases, and some Abu Dhabi families buy both. We can only supply one of them, and we say so before you book rather than after. The table sets the two formats against what the task itself needs.

Who sets what: ADEK, your school, and the IB

  • ADEK supervises school licensing and accreditation, and publishes inspection ratings
  • The IB sets the criteria, the word ceiling and moderation
  • Your school sets the internal deadline, draft policy and laboratory access
  • The DP coordinator is the one person who can confirm all of your dates

Parents often assume a single authority governs the investigation deadline, the mark and the appeal route. Three different bodies are involved and only one of them is reachable by a phone call. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and publishes its own inspection ratings, which tells you about the school but nothing about an individual internal assessment. The IB owns the criteria, the word ceiling and moderation. Your school owns the deadline, the draft policy and the laboratory timetable.

That division explains why answers differ between families at different Abu Dhabi schools. How many drafts a teacher may comment on, whether a submission is accepted late, and when the internal deadline falls are school decisions taken inside IB guidance. The person who can confirm all three is the DP coordinator, and the request is a short email rather than a meeting. It is worth sending before buying any support at all, because the deadline sets the plan.

Moderation is the part that surprises people most. The teacher marks the investigation and the IB moderates a sample, so a school mark can move. This is not a reason to distrust the teacher; it is a reason to keep the draft and the criterion notes, because an inflated internal mark that falls on moderation is far more painful in July than a realistic one in February. Independent marking against the published criteria is a way of finding that out early.

09

Equivalency, UAE universities and what the investigation is worth later

  • The investigation is 20% of one subject grade, not a standalone qualification
  • British-track equivalency asks for five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than E or 3
  • Arabic and Islamic Education are excluded from that count of five
  • No IB points threshold is published here; verify it on moe.gov.ae before relying on one

A Biology investigation mark is never read on its own by a university. It is 20% of a subject grade, and that subject grade is one of six. Families in Abu Dhabi usually ask about it in the context of medicine or health sciences applications, where the relevant question is which subjects were taken at Higher Level and what the overall points total was, not what a single internal component scored.

Certificate equivalency through the UAE Ministry of Education is a separate process from admission and is not something a tutoring service performs or guarantees. The published requirements for the British track are specific: five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. The American track sets separate English and mathematics test thresholds.

For the IB there is no points figure published here, deliberately. Secondary sources circulate numbers that could not be confirmed on the ministry's own pages, and publishing an unverified threshold would be worse than publishing nothing. Check the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority directly, and ask your school's university counsellor at the same time. What a strong investigation does contribute is a Biology grade that holds up, which is the part an admissions office actually reads, and the part that survives any later change to an equivalency rule.

Where we tutor

Where in Abu Dhabi these sessions actually run

Delivery is online across the whole emirate, so the practical question is not distance but what your evening looks like after school transport and activities. These notes reflect how families in each area tend to schedule.

Saadiyat Island

Short school runs and a high share of Diploma students at long-established schools. Sessions here often start at 16:30 because transport is quick, which makes Saadiyat one of the few areas where a weekday double session before a deadline is realistic.

Khalifa City

The densest band of IB and British-curriculum enrolment in the emirate and the longest bus routes. A 16:00 start is rarely achievable; most families settle on 17:30 or 18:00 on weekdays and a longer Saturday block during data analysis.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Mixed villa and apartment communities feeding the mainland school corridor. Sibling bookings are common, which matters when two children need the same evening slot; splitting one across Thursday and Saturday usually solves it.

Al Reem Island

Newer towers with a high proportion of students who transferred curriculum mid-course. Report history here is the least reliable evidence of ability, so a marked draft or a timed data-based question carries far more weight than last term's grade.

Yas Island

Growing Diploma cohorts and heavy weekend activity schedules. Investigation data collection tends to be squeezed into school laboratory time rather than holidays, so method planning has to be finished well before the lab slot is booked.

Al Bateen and the Corniche

Island schools with established Diploma teaching and tightly managed internal assessment. Students from this cluster most often arrive with a draft and a deadline rather than a content gap, which changes what a first session is for.

Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

Central districts with a mix of international and bilingual provision. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies sit in the weekly timetable alongside the Diploma or MYP load, so the free evening count is lower than families expect.

Schools in this cluster have run the Diploma for years and tend to manage internal assessment on a published internal calendar. Students we support from here usually need criterion-level draft work rather than content recovery.

  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Al Reef

The mainland corridor, with the emirate's largest IB enrolment and its widest attainment spread inside single year groups. Two students from the same Biology class can need entirely different first sessions.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Reach British School

Saadiyat, Yas and Al Reem

Newer and growing cohorts with many mid-year arrivals from other countries and curricula. Syllabus mapping comes before any investigation work, because the gap is usually in what was never covered elsewhere.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named here as context for the Abu Dhabi education environment our students come from; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the draft and the deadline

Share whatever exists, even if it is three paragraphs and a spreadsheet, along with the school's internal deadline and any teacher feedback already received. A tutor reads it before the first session. Nothing useful can be planned from a subject name and a year group alone, and the draft is what makes the first hour diagnostic rather than introductory.

  2. 02

Free trial session with a marked draft

The first session is free, limited to one session per student, and runs as a working session rather than a sales call. The tutor marks the draft against all four criteria and returns a written note placing each criterion in a band. If the fit is wrong, you keep the marked draft and the notes and owe nothing.

  3. 03

Agree the plan against the school's dates

The plan runs backwards from your school's deadline, not forwards from today. It names which criterion each session targets, when data collection has to be finished, and what happens if the laboratory slot moves. Where the deadline is too close for the full sequence, the plan says which stages are being dropped and what that costs in marks.

  4. 04

    Weekly sessions with written notes

Each session works on the live draft and ends with notes naming the criterion, the change made and the next task. Notes go to the parent as well as the student. This is the record that lets you judge the work without reading biology, and it is the reason a plateau becomes visible in week four rather than in July.

  5. 05

    Pre-submission re-mark

Before the student submits, the full draft is marked again against all four criteria and compared against the baseline from session one. The comparison is the honest answer to whether the money worked. It also catches the late problems: a word count over the ceiling, an uncited dataset, or a conclusion that still restates data instead of answering the question.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The marked draft comes before the sales conversation

The first thing produced is a criterion-marked copy of your child's existing work, not a brochure. It is yours whether or not you continue. This is also the only reliable way to find out whether the problem is biology content, experimental design or report writing, and those three cost very different numbers of hours to fix.

Progress is written down, not asserted

Every session ends with a note naming the criterion worked on and the change made in the draft. You can check it against the document. A parent who cannot read a Biology syllabus can still read a note that says Criterion C moved from unevidenced to partially evidenced and see the paragraph that did it.

Statistics taught on the student's own data

Test selection, standard deviation and error bars are taught on the spreadsheet the student actually collected, with their sample size and their gaps. Worked textbook examples do not transfer. The measure of success is that the student can redo the analysis alone, because that is what the report has to evidence.

The honesty line is stated before the first session

What a tutor will and will not do is set out in writing before any money is involved: explanation, challenge, teaching and marking, with no text, figures or methods supplied. Families who have met the completed-coursework offers circulating in Abu Dhabi tend to ask for this in writing, and it is better given unprompted.

Chosen by subject and level, not by driving distance

Because sessions run over video, a Biology Higher Level specialist who can mark a scientific investigation is available to a family in Al Shamkha on the same terms as one on Saadiyat. The alternative, in practice, is choosing from whoever is willing to drive to your community on a weekday evening.

Availability stated plainly, including when it is nil

Where no Biology specialist is free in the slot you want, we say so and give the realistic wait rather than substituting a general science tutor. For a 24-mark investigation that distinction decides whether the hours are worth buying at all, and a wrong match discovered in week three has cost both money and weeks.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does IB Biology IA help in Abu Dhabi actually involve week to week?+

It involves working on your child's own scientific investigation, one criterion at a time, in a live online session. A typical run opens with a marked baseline draft, then moves through the research question, the method, data collection, processing and statistics, the conclusion and the evaluation. Each session ends with written notes naming the criterion addressed, what changed in the draft, and the next task. Those notes go to the parent as well as the student. Nothing is written for the student at any stage; the tutor explains, questions, teaches and marks, and the student does the writing.

How many marks is the Biology scientific investigation worth and how are they divided?+

Under the current IB Biology guide the investigation carries 20% of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level and is marked out of 24. Those 24 marks sit across four criteria, six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The practical consequence is that a student who writes a beautiful conclusion but designed a method with no controlled variables has capped themselves at eighteen before the report is read. Confirm the exact allocation against the subject guide your school issues, since guides are revised and the school's copy is the one your teacher marks from.

My son's research question was approved by his teacher but a tutor says it is too vague. Who is right?+

Both can be right, because approval and marking are different judgements. A teacher approving a topic is often confirming it is safe, ethical and achievable in the school laboratory. A marker is asking whether the question names a measured variable, a changed variable with a stated range, and a specific organism, tissue or dataset. A question can clear the first test and fail the second. The practical move is to rewrite the question to that specification and take it back to the teacher, who will almost always accept a tighter version of something already approved.

Is a secondary-data investigation treated as a weaker option in Abu Dhabi schools?+

No. The criteria do not award marks for having stood in a laboratory. A design built on a published dataset is assessed on the same four criteria as a practical one and can score at the top band if the question is sharp, the source is properly described and the processing is sound. For families in the emirate it is often the stronger route, because outdoor fieldwork between May and September is impractical and laboratory slots are timetabled and limited. What a secondary design must do is state who collected the data, when, by what method, and its limitations.

Our Biology class is behind the syllabus and the investigation is due. Which problem do we pay to fix first?+

The investigation, almost always. It is a fixed-deadline component worth 20%, and a missed or weak submission cannot be recovered by revision later. Syllabus content, by contrast, can be caught up in the months before the written papers, and a good deal of it will be retaught in revision anyway. The one exception is when the investigation itself depends on a topic the class has not reached, in which case the teaching narrows to that topic rather than to the whole backlog. A marked draft tells you which situation you are in.

How do I tell whether the Biology sessions are actually working before the mark comes back?+

Compare the written criterion notes across sessions against the draft itself. A working sequence shows named strands moving from unevidenced to evidenced, in the student's own text, with the tutor pointing at the paragraph or figure that now carries the evidence. A sequence that is not working shows the same comment repeated in different words for a month. You do not need biology to read that pattern. The pre-submission re-mark against the week-one baseline is the other check, and it is the one that answers the question in writing.

Does my child need statistics for the Biology investigation if they take Analysis and Approaches?+

Usually yes, and that is the most common unbudgeted cost in the task. Hypothesis testing, chi-squared tests of association and correlation sit in Applications and Interpretation rather than Analysis and Approaches, so a student on the Analysis route may have met none of them formally. The Biology teacher is not timetabled to teach them. Expect roughly four sessions, taught on the student's own spreadsheet rather than on textbook examples, covering spread, uncertainty, test selection and how to state a null hypothesis and a significance threshold in the report.

Can we pay my daughter's own Biology teacher at her Abu Dhabi school for extra investigation sessions?+

Treat that as the wrong route. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against the ADEK policy document yourself before relying on it. Beyond the rules, the teacher marking the work should not also be paid to improve it, which is a conflict a moderator can reasonably question.

Someone in a parents group is selling a finished Biology investigation. What is the actual risk?+

The risk is the whole Diploma, not the Biology grade. Submitted work carries an authenticity declaration in the candidate's name, and IB academic honesty rules treat submitting another person's work as malpractice, with consequences that can extend to the award of the diploma itself. Schools detect these more often than sellers suggest, because the writing does not match the student's other work and the process leaves no draft history. A legitimate tutor returns a marked copy of your child's draft with problems named, never a document to submit.

What does Biology investigation support cost in Abu Dhabi, and what should the hour include?+

Published rates in the UAE market run from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutoring, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit with travel inside the rate, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB specialist, with premium examiner-led provision quoted higher. Those are other providers' published figures as read in October 2026, not our price. The question that matters more is what arrives in writing afterwards: an hour ending in a marked draft is a different product from an hour of conversation.

Why is there no in-home option in Abu Dhabi when other providers offer one?+

Because IB Gram delivers UAE tuition live online and runs home visiting only in India, which we would rather state than obscure. On investigation work the online format is also the better fit: both parties need the same draft and spreadsheet open with a version history, which screen sharing does natively and a laptop on a kitchen table does not. It also widens the choice of tutor from those willing to drive to your community on a weekday to any Biology Higher Level specialist who can mark a scientific investigation.

Three weeks to the deadline and the data are collected but nothing is processed. Is it salvageable?+

Usually, if the data can support any analysis at all. That is the first thing checked, because no amount of writing rescues five repeats with no variation. Where the data hold up, three weeks is enough for a pre-submission review, a statistics block on the student's own numbers, and a conclusion and evaluation rewritten against the criteria. What is not realistic in that window is redesigning the method or collecting again. The review says plainly which of those two situations you are in before any further hours are bought.

Does the 3,000-word ceiling on the report include tables, graphs and the bibliography?+

The conventional position is that the ceiling applies to the body of the report rather than to data tables, graph labels, citations or the bibliography, but the only answer that protects your child is the one in the subject guide the school is marking from, confirmed by the DP coordinator. Ask in writing and keep the reply. What is universally true is that students over the limit usually have narrative to cut rather than data: background that belongs in two sentences, and a conclusion that retells the results before answering the question.

Can sessions move to post-Iftar times during Ramadan without a rescheduling charge?+

Yes, and most Abu Dhabi families ask for it. Later evening slots after Iftar work for Diploma students who are fasting, and reduced school hours during Ramadan change what a weekday afternoon looks like in any case. The practical planning point is that Ramadan and Eid tend to fall across the weeks when DP2 students are finishing investigations and starting revision, so it is worth agreeing the shifted timetable several weeks ahead rather than in the first week. Slot changes agreed in advance carry no fee.

What happens if no Biology Higher Level specialist is free in the slot we want?+

We say so, give the realistic wait, and offer the nearest alternative explicitly labelled as such, rather than quietly substituting a general science tutor. For a 24-mark scientific investigation that distinction decides whether the hours are worth buying: a tutor who has not supervised one cannot mark a draft against the four criteria with any authority. Most families would rather wait ten days for the right match than discover in week three that the match was wrong, having spent both money and weeks they cannot get back.

Does a tutor working with students in Abu Dhabi need a UAE permit, and how do we check?+

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to groups including school and government staff, private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you. Ask any tutor directly and apply through the MoHRE channels.

Start with the draft, not with a quote

Send the scientific investigation as it stands, the school's internal deadline, and whatever feedback the teacher has already given. The first session is free, one per student, and runs as working time rather than a sales call: your child's draft comes back marked against all four criteria, with a written note placing each one in a band and listing the strands that carry no evidence yet. Keep that document whatever you decide next. If the fit is wrong, you have still learned whether the problem is biology, design or writing, which is the question most Abu Dhabi families actually arrived with.
