Cambridge IGCSE Psychology 0266 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Parents looking for a Cambridge IGCSE Psychology 0266 tutor in Abu Dhabi almost always ask the same second question: how will I know it is working? This page answers that one first. Progress in this subject is visible on paper, in marked scripts that accumulate week by week, and what follows sets out what that evidence looks like, what it should show by week six, and where psychology answers lose marks. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • A marked script produced every week, readable by a parent without explanation
  • Feedback names the missing move, not the general impression
  • Research methods and data questions drilled, since they repeat every series
  • Sessions online over live video, timed to the Abu Dhabi school week

How to tell whether Psychology tutoring is working, in week six rather than in August

Most tutoring arrangements are judged on feel. The student says the sessions are helpful, the tutor says they are making progress, and nobody finds out whether that was true until a mock result arrives months later. Psychology is unusually well suited to a better method, because everything it assesses is written down. A marked answer shows exactly what a student can and cannot do, in a form a parent can read without any subject knowledge at all, and a folder of them in date order is a progress record rather than an opinion about one.

That is the organising idea of this page. Rather than listing qualifications, it sets out what evidence a 0266 arrangement should produce, when, and what it means when the evidence does not appear. By the end of week two there should be a marked script with the lost marks named specifically. By week six there should be five or six of them and a visible direction. If there is nothing to read by week six, the arrangement is not working, whatever anybody says about engagement.

The subject itself cooperates. Cambridge IGCSE Psychology is assessed by written examination, with nothing submitted from home, so there is no internal assessment and no coursework to supervise. Students who have heard about the Internal Assessment in IB Psychology sometimes expect one here; there is none at IGCSE. The paper structure, durations and mark totals are set out in the syllabus for each exam series, and a revision plan should be built from the version that matches your child's series rather than from an older copy.

Where marks are lost is consistent enough to predict. Students describe a study when the question asked them to evaluate it. They name an ethical issue without saying what it requires or how a researcher would deal with it. They confuse the independent and dependent variables under time pressure. They read a graph without saying what it implies. None of these is a knowledge gap, which is why they are visible on a marked script and invisible in conversation, and why marking is the mechanism that moves this grade rather than extra explanation.

Delivery in the UAE is online, one-to-one, over live video with screens shared, and IB Gram does not make home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tutoring is offered only in India. For a subject taught by reading a script together, the shared screen is the right tool. Private schools in this emirate are licensed and inspected by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools here, and Psychology is a minority option in most of them, usually one class with one teacher and no second set to move into.

At a glance

  • Assessed by written examination; nothing is submitted from home
  • There is no Internal Assessment at IGCSE, despite the IB comparison
  • A marked script every week, kept in date order, is the progress record
  • Week six is the honest review point, not the end-of-year mock
  • Research methods and data questions recur in every series
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0266 sits at the start of a pathway that gets considerably more demanding, and the habits built at IGCSE are the ones the later courses assess twice as hard. Knowing the intended destination changes what a first term should prioritise.

0266Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Psychology

Introduces psychological approaches, a set of core studies, and research methods: variables, experimental design, sampling, reliability, validity, data handling and research ethics. Assessed by written examination with no coursework component, and the topic list, paper structure and mark totals for your child's series are set out in the current syllabus document.

In Abu Dhabi, 0266 is usually a Year 10 option taken by a small self-selected group, frequently timetabled against a second humanity or a third science. Because the class is small there is no parallel set, so a student who loses three weeks to illness or to a mid-year move has no internal route back and that is the usual trigger for an outside booking in this subject.

9990Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS & A Level Psychology

The continuation route, with research methods treated at far greater depth, named studies examined in detail, and extended answers that must evaluate rather than describe. Students who reached a good IGCSE grade by learning study summaries find the first AS term difficult, because the summaries stop being enough and the methodological critique starts carrying the marks.

Several Abu Dhabi schools offer 9990 in their sixth form, and some admit students to it without IGCSE Psychology at all. Where a student is continuing, the IGCSE year is best spent building methods fluency rather than memorising more studies, because methods is the component that scales and recall is the one that does not.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Psychology

The alternative post-sixteen route for students moving into an IB Diploma school. It adds an Internal Assessment, a written report on a simple replicated experiment, which is the first time these students meet assessed work produced outside an exam hall. The IGCSE methods material is the direct preparation for it, which is one more reason to take that part seriously at sixteen.

Abu Dhabi has a substantial IB sector alongside its Cambridge schools, and movement between them at sixteen is routine here. A student heading for DP Psychology benefits from a short bridging block over the summer on experimental design and report conventions, since nothing at IGCSE required them to write up a study of their own.

0495Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Sociology

The neighbour subject, sharing most of the research-methods content including sampling, reliability, validity and research ethics. The difference is the level of explanation: psychology explains individual behaviour, sociology explains group patterns. Students taking both learn the methods once and are examined on them twice, which is a genuine efficiency.

Where an Abu Dhabi school offers the pair, taking both is efficient rather than duplicative. The risk is answer style under exam pressure: a psychology answer reaches for a study and a mechanism, a sociology answer reaches for a concept and a social pattern, and candidates occasionally produce the wrong one in the wrong paper.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Psychology is often one half of a booking. The subjects below are the usual companions in an Abu Dhabi option block, mostly because they share either the methods content or the extended-answer demand.

Psychology (0266)

Cambridge IGCSE

The subject of this page. Sessions build research-methods fluency, turn described studies into evaluated ones, drill the data and graph questions that recur every series, and produce a marked script every week as the progress record.

Sociology (0495)

Cambridge IGCSE

Shares most of the methods content, including sampling, reliability, validity and ethics, so a student taking both covers that material once. The separation to maintain is the level of explanation: individual behaviour against group patterns.

Biology (0610)

Cambridge IGCSE

Supports the biological approach directly: the nervous system, hormones, the brain and the physiological basis of behaviour. Students carrying Biology can explain a mechanism where others assert an outcome, which is worth marks in any question about biological explanations.

Mathematics (0580)

Cambridge IGCSE, Core and Extended

Behind the data-handling questions that catch candidates out. Mean, median, mode and range, percentage change, reading values off a graph accurately and choosing an appropriate chart all appear, and losing those marks has nothing to do with psychology.

English as a First Language (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE

Relevant because the longer psychology answers are extended prose under timing. Students who can control a paragraph convert their knowledge into marks; students who cannot lose marks on material they genuinely understand.

English as a Second Language (0510)

Cambridge IGCSE

Many Abu Dhabi candidates sit 0510 alongside 0266. The useful transfer is precision in short written answers, where a psychology definition has to be exact rather than approximate to score.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Cambridge IGCSE

Shares the evaluation demand and the habit of asking how a claim was produced. Students who have done 0457 research work handle study critique more readily, because they have already been made to ask who produced evidence and why.

Business Studies (0450)

Cambridge IGCSE

Contributes the structure of a supported judgement: a position taken, the alternative addressed, and a reason given. That is the shape the longer psychology questions want when they ask a candidate to evaluate rather than describe.

History (0470)

Cambridge IGCSE

Brings source evaluation, which maps onto study critique: who conducted this, when, on whom, and what does that do to the conclusion. It is the single most transferable humanities skill into 0266 evaluation questions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Psychology support divides by what the marked work shows. Each shape below exists because a particular fault pattern responds to it, and a tutor should be able to say which one applies after the first script.

Weekly session with a marked script

The standard arrangement. One topic area or methods block taught per session, finishing with a timed answer the student writes afterwards and the tutor marks before the next lesson. The marked scripts are kept in date order so the arrangement can be judged on evidence rather than on anybody's impression of how it is going.

  • A timed answer set, written and marked between every pair of sessions
  • Feedback naming the missing element, not the general quality
  • Scripts kept in sequence as the progress record a parent can read
  • Online across Abu Dhabi; no home visit is involved

Research methods and data block

Four to six sessions on the content that recurs in every series: variables and operationalisation, experimental designs, sampling, reliability and validity, demand characteristics, data handling and graph interpretation. It is the most predictable material in the subject and usually the part taught most quickly in school.

  • Independent and dependent variables identified under timed conditions
  • Experimental designs chosen for a described study, not just listed
  • Mean, median, mode, range and chart choice practised on real data
  • Graphs read for what they imply rather than for what they show

Study evaluation clinic

A short block for the student who can describe every core study and cannot criticise one. Sessions take a study the student knows well and build the critique systematically: sample, method, ethics, ecological validity, and what the conclusion can and cannot support. The same answer is then rewritten after marking.

  • A fixed critique framework applied to every study, not improvised
  • Sample size and composition treated as examinable detail
  • Ecological validity distinguished from validity in general
  • The same question answered cold, marked, then answered again

Pre-series retrieval block

Six to eight weeks before a series, two sessions a week with no new content introduced. One session on timed retrieval of studies and definitions, one on a full timed paper. The error log from earlier months drives what gets revisited, so the same lost mark is not corrected four times without being learned.

  • Two sessions a week across the final six to eight weeks
  • Nothing new taught; retrieval, timing and accuracy only
  • Full timed papers in the later weeks of the block
  • Driven by the running error log rather than by the textbook order

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What progress in 0266 looks like on paper, week by week

A tutoring arrangement should be falsifiable. If nothing it produces could show that it was not working, then its claim to be working means nothing either. In a written-exam subject that is easy to arrange: the student produces a timed answer every week, somebody marks it against the published criteria, and the marked scripts are kept. A parent who can read five scripts in date order does not need to ask anybody whether progress is happening.

The sequence below is what a reasonable six weeks produces. It is deliberately unambitious in the early weeks, because a first marked answer is a diagnostic rather than an achievement, and because a student whose first script is good was probably not the student who needed the booking. What matters is the direction across the set and the disappearance of specific named faults rather than a rising percentage, since the questions are not of equal difficulty.

Two things should change in that window. The named faults from week one should stop recurring: if the week-one script lost marks for describing a study instead of evaluating it, the week-five script should not. And the student's own ability to predict their marks should improve, which is the clearest sign that the criteria have been internalised rather than merely explained. A student who can read their own answer and say where it will lose marks has acquired something that lasts past the exam.

What should also be visible is what has not changed. An honest marked set shows persistent faults as well as corrected ones, and a tutor should name them at the six-week review rather than letting a general impression of progress cover them. Where the evidence shows no movement, the right answer is to change the plan or stop, and a family is entitled to be told that rather than invited to buy another term.

A 0266 ARRANGEMENT, FIRST SIX WEEKS - WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOULD SHOW

3A research-methods answer on variables and designIndependent and dependent variables correctly identifiedMethods were not prioritised, and they recur in every series
4A study evaluation using a fixed critique frameworkSample, method and ethics each appear as separate pointsEvaluation is still improvised rather than structured
5A data and graph question under timingValues read correctly and an implication stated, not just a descriptionThe quantitative marks are being left on the table
6A full timed section plus a review of all five scriptsWeek-one faults have stopped recurring; remaining ones are namedThe plan is not working and should be changed rather than extended
02

Research methods is the examinable spine of the subject

Of everything in 0266, research methods is the most predictable and the most reliably under-taught. It appears in every series because it is the part of psychology that does not change, and it is taught quickly in many schools because students find core studies more interesting than operationalisation. The consequence is a cohort that can recount experiments in detail and cannot say what the independent variable was, which is a strange and very fixable position to be in.

The content divides into four blocks. The first is variables and operationalisation: what was manipulated, what was measured, what else might have affected the result, and how an abstract idea such as aggression or memory was turned into something countable. Candidates who cannot operationalise lose marks on questions that are otherwise straightforward, because the question asks how the researcher measured it and the student answers what the researcher was interested in.

The second block is design and sampling. Independent measures, repeated measures and matched pairs each solve a problem and create one, and the examinable skill is choosing for a described study and saying why. Sampling works the same way: random, opportunity, volunteer and stratified samples differ in who they reach and what they distort, and a question gives a scenario rather than asking for a list. The third is reliability, validity and the things that threaten them, including demand characteristics and researcher effects, where candidates routinely use reliability and validity as synonyms and lose the mark that the distinction was the whole point of.

The fourth is data. Mean, median, mode and range, choosing an appropriate graph, reading values accurately off an axis and saying what a pattern implies rather than restating it. These marks are available to any careful student and are lost for reasons unrelated to psychology, which makes them the cheapest marks on the paper to recover. The table below sets the main concepts against how each tends to be examined.

0266 RESEARCH METHODS - CONCEPTS, HOW THEY ARE EXAMINED AND THE COMMON ERROR
ConceptWhat it means in plain termsHow a question tends to ask for itThe error that costs the mark
Independent variableThe thing the researcher changes on purposeIdentify the independent variable in a described studyGiving the topic of the study instead of the thing manipulated

03

Core studies: knowing one well enough to criticise it

  • Sample: how many, who, and what that makes unsafe to conclude
  • Method: what it was, and specifically what it cannot show
  • Setting: whether behaviour there resembles behaviour elsewhere
  • Ethics: which issue arose, and how the researcher handled it
  • Conclusion: what the findings support, as opposed to what is claimed

Students arrive at Psychology expecting to learn studies and they are right, but they usually learn the wrong half. A study can be recounted in detail, with the procedure in order and the findings accurate, and still produce a mid-band answer, because most of the marks above description sit in the critique. The useful target is not more studies; it is each study held firmly enough to be taken apart.

A critique framework makes that teachable rather than a matter of flair. Five headings cover almost everything an IGCSE question can ask. Who the participants were, how many, and what that does to the conclusion. Which method was used and what it cannot show. Where it was conducted and whether behaviour there resembles behaviour elsewhere. Which ethical issues arose and how the researcher dealt with them. And what the findings actually support, as distinct from what they are often said to support. A student who applies those five headings to any study will have something to write.

The framework also prevents the most common evaluation failure, which is a criticism that could be made of any study ever conducted. Small sample is not a criticism unless the student says what the small sample makes unsafe. Lacks ecological validity is not a criticism unless the student says what about that setting differs from the one the conclusion is about. The difference between a generic objection and a specific one is exactly the difference between a lower and an upper band.

Practically this means fewer studies, held better. For most candidates two or three secure studies per topic area, each with its five-heading critique available from memory, beats a longer list of summaries. It also makes retrieval easier under exam pressure, which is where the real losses happen: a student who has over-revised breadth and under-revised depth freezes when asked to evaluate rather than to describe.

04

Where psychology answers lose marks

  • A study retold when the question asked for a judgement on it
  • Criticisms that would apply equally to any study ever run
  • Independent and dependent variables swapped under time pressure
  • Ethical issues named without what they require or how they are handled
  • A graph described rather than interpreted

Marked scripts from Abu Dhabi candidates show the same handful of faults with striking consistency, which is good news for a family deciding whether tutoring is worth buying. The faults are specific, nameable and short-lived once named. They are not caused by weak effort and they are rarely caused by weak understanding, which is why more explanation does not fix them and marking does.

The largest is description where evaluation was asked for. A student retells the study and stops, because retelling is what they practised. The second is the generic criticism, where a real objection is replaced by a sentence that would fit any study. The third is the variable confusion, which surfaces under time pressure even in students who can explain the distinction calmly in a lesson, and which responds only to repetition on real scenarios.

The fourth is ethics as a list. A student names informed consent, deception and protection from harm without saying what any of them requires or how a researcher would address them, and the marks sit in the second half. The fifth is data questions answered with a restatement: the graph shows that the score went up, with nothing said about what that implies for the hypothesis. The sixth is the undecided answer, where a question asking for a judgement receives a balanced summary and no position.

A seventh deserves its own mention because it is purely administrative: misreading the command word. Describe, explain, suggest and evaluate ask for different things, and a correct answer to the wrong command scores badly. Fifteen minutes a week spent sorting real questions by command word, rather than discussing command words in the abstract, generally removes this category inside a month and costs nothing.

05

Ethics in the syllabus, and ethics in the tutoring room

Research ethics is examinable content in 0266 rather than background reading, and it is also the part of the syllabus where a student's answer most often stops halfway. Naming an issue is the first mark. Saying what it requires of the researcher is the second. Saying how a particular study breached it or handled it is the third, and that is where candidates stop writing. Teaching it as a three-step move rather than as a vocabulary list changes the score on every ethics question.

The table below sets out the main issues in that three-step form. It is worth a student's time to be able to produce the right-hand column from memory for any study they have learned, because questions tend to arrive as a scenario rather than as a definition request. A study in which participants were not told the real aim is a deception question; the marks are in what the researcher should have done afterwards, and debriefing is the answer the weaker scripts never reach.

There is a second kind of ethics on this page, and it belongs in the open. 0266 has no coursework, so nothing a student submits to Cambridge could be improperly authored by anybody. School-set assignments and mocks still exist and still feed predicted grades, which feed sixth-form and university applications, and on those the boundary is the usual one: a tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on work the student has written. No sentences are supplied for submission, and no draft is edited to the point where the authorship becomes unclear.

Published exam material gets the same treatment. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are referenced and obtained through the school from cambridgeinternational.org rather than circulated as downloads. Reproducing board material is a copyright matter, and with unreleased papers it becomes a malpractice exposure that lands on the candidate rather than on the provider. A tutor marking against the published criteria does not need to distribute anything to do the job properly.

Marking a script together, line by line

The most useful twenty minutes in a Psychology session is not teaching. It is the marked script on a shared screen with the cursor moving through it, the tutor stopping at each place a mark was available, and the student saying what should have been written there. That order matters. A tutor who explains the correction produces a student who agrees; a tutor who asks the question produces a student who can do it next week without help.

The process has a rhythm. Read the question aloud and identify the command word before looking at the answer. Go through the answer marking where credit was earned, which matters as much as finding faults because students systematically underestimate what they did right. Stop at each gap and ask what the criteria wanted there. Then set the same question again, to be answered cold, and compare the two scripts side by side. The gain between attempt one and attempt two is attributable to one change rather than to general improvement, which makes it genuinely informative.

This is where the online format earns its place rather than merely coping. Two scripts can sit side by side on screen, annotated live, with the student taking control to rewrite a paragraph while the tutor watches. Doing the same thing on paper across a table means one person holding the sheet and the other reading upside down. Screen sharing is not a compromise for this task; it is the better tool, and it is also why the marked work is easy to keep and easy for a parent to open.

The output is what the family receives. A marked script, a short note naming the faults in plain language, and a line on what changed since the last one. Over six weeks that becomes a folder nobody has to interpret. It also makes the honest conversation possible: if the faults named in week one are still there in week five, that is visible to everybody and the plan needs changing rather than defending.

07

What counts outside the exam hall: equivalency and next steps

  • Five accredited IGCSEs at grade E or 3 for the British equivalency track
  • Arabic and Islamic education sit outside that count of five
  • No IB points figure is published here without a moe.gov.ae source
  • AS Psychology 9990 and IB DP Psychology both admit students without the IGCSE

Two practical questions sit behind most 0266 bookings and neither is about teaching. The first is whether the subject counts. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the published requirement is a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Psychology counts as an accredited subject like any other.

The detail that catches families out is the exclusion: Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE total. A student taking those two plus four academic IGCSEs therefore has four counting subjects rather than six, which changes option-block planning in Year 9 and is worth checking before it is too late to adjust. At least one competing tutoring site publishes a six-subject requirement, which is not what the published rule says.

No IB equivalency figure appears anywhere on this page, because none has been confirmed from the Ministry's own pages for this project. If your planning depends on an IB points number, read it at moe.gov.ae or ask the attestation authority in your emirate directly rather than trusting a tutoring site, this one included. Equivalency is also not a process a tutor performs, accelerates or influences, and no tutoring is required for it; any provider implying otherwise is building urgency around a regulatory process.

The second question is where Psychology leads. Cambridge AS and A Level Psychology is the direct continuation and some Abu Dhabi schools admit students to it without the IGCSE. IB Diploma Psychology is the route in an IB sixth form and introduces an Internal Assessment, a written report on a replicated experiment, which is the first assessed work these students produce outside an exam hall. Neither route requires IGCSE Psychology, and a student who enjoys the subject should take it for that reason rather than for a prerequisite that does not exist.

Scheduling in Abu Dhabi, and what starting actually involves

  • Protect a writing window before fixing the lesson time
  • Specialist availability is best after 7pm Gulf Standard Time
  • Shorter, more frequent written tasks through Ramadan rather than a pause
  • Send one marked script, the topics covered, and the entered series

A written-work arrangement needs two things from the calendar: a session slot and time afterwards for the student to write. Families who book a session at the only free moment in the week, with activities either side of it, end up with a tutor teaching and nobody writing, which removes the mechanism the whole plan depends on. The practical advice is to protect a forty-minute writing window somewhere in the following two days before fixing the lesson time.

Abu Dhabi sorts into the usual three windows. Short-commute communities in the central districts and Khalifa City can manage a late-afternoon start. The 5.30pm to 7pm band is the most contested in the emirate. After 7pm is what mainland families use, and for a minority subject like Psychology it is where specialist availability is genuinely better, so a family able to take a later slot gets a real choice of tutor. Mocks cluster in January and February, which is when demand peaks and choice disappears; an October start costs the same per hour.

Ramadan is worth agreeing in advance rather than improvising. Sessions commonly move to post-Iftar timing, and written tasks are better set shorter and more frequently through that month than paused entirely, because a four-week gap in a marking cycle is hard to recover from with a June series approaching. Travel is the other recurring factor: an online slot can follow a family to another time zone during the holidays if the time difference is agreed before the trip rather than after it.

Starting is short and specific. Send one marked script, a list of the topic areas the class has covered, and the series the student is entered for. A free trial lesson follows, one session and no charge, spent marking a real answer with the student rather than interviewing them. What comes back is a written note naming the faults and a realistic week count. If no 0266 specialist is free in the slot you need, you will be told that rather than offered a general science or humanities tutor, and no grade is promised by anybody, because a subject marked by examiners reading extended prose does not allow it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

The session has to land when a student can still produce written work, and that differs sharply across this emirate. The notes below cover what is realistically bookable and what each community tends to need.

Al Maqta and Between the Bridges

Villa communities with moderate commutes and a mix of school catchments. Late-afternoon sessions work here, which suits an arrangement built around a written answer produced the same evening.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Long drives to the island schools, so the first realistic weekday slot is usually after 7pm Gulf Standard Time. Online delivery is what makes that window usable, and specialist availability is better in it.

Al Muroor and Al Manhal

Central neighbourhoods close to several long-established schools. Students here have usually followed the full two-year course, so marked work tends to show technique faults rather than coverage gaps.

Saadiyat Island

Newer campuses with short commutes and many mid-course arrivals. A first marked script here often reveals two or three topic areas that were taught before the student joined and never revisited.

Al Raha Beach and Al Zeina

Apartment and villa mix with heavy after-school activity calendars. A single weekly hour plus one written answer suits these households better than two short sessions with no time to write between them.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Growing mainland communities with the least local tutoring supply for minority subjects. Families here gain the most from an online slot, since a Psychology specialist within driving distance is not a realistic expectation.

Khalifa City

Large year groups and January mock clusters, which is when most Psychology bookings in the emirate start. Booking here in the autumn rather than after the mock gives a genuine choice of specialist.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Central and island schools

Long-established British-curriculum campuses where Psychology is a small option group with continuity across both years. Marked scripts from these students usually show secure content and weak evaluation, which is the fastest fault to correct.

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send one marked script

A single marked answer is worth more than any description of the problem, because it shows whether marks were lost on description, on generic criticism, on variables or on command words. Add the topic areas covered so far and the series the student is entered for.

  2. 02

    Free trial lesson spent marking

One session, no charge, spent working through a real answer with the student on a shared screen rather than interviewing them. By the end there is a named fault and a rough week count, which is a more useful hour than any introductory conversation.

  3. 03

Set a baseline in week one

A timed answer written cold, before teaching starts, so later improvement can be demonstrated rather than asserted. Without a baseline nobody can tell whether a better script in week five reflects teaching or an easier question.

  4. 04

    One marked script every week

Each session ends with a timed answer to be written and returned for marking against the published criteria. Feedback names the specific missing element. The scripts are kept in date order, which is what turns a tutoring arrangement into something a parent can audit.

  5. 05

    Keep a running error log

Faults go on a list the student maintains and the tutor audits, so the same lost mark is not corrected four times without being learned. In the final weeks that log, rather than the textbook order, decides what gets revisited.

  6. 06

    Six-week review on the evidence

All the scripts are read together at week six. Faults that have gone are named, faults that persist are named, and the plan rises, holds or ends on that basis. A plan showing no movement should stop rather than be extended out of politeness.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The arrangement is falsifiable

A timed answer every week, marked against the published criteria and kept in date order, means the claim that tutoring is working can be checked rather than believed. If the week-one faults are still present in week five, that is visible to the family without anybody interpreting it.

Feedback names the missing move

Needs more evaluation gives a student nothing to do. Marked work here names the absence precisely: a generic criticism where a specific one was needed, a variable swapped, ethics listed without what each requires. A named fault can be fixed without the tutor in the room.

Methods before more studies

Research methods recurs in every series and is the part most often taught quickly in school. Prioritising it is arithmetic rather than preference, and it is why a first block usually goes there rather than to another pass through the core studies.

Online, and the right tool for this

Two scripts side by side on a shared screen, annotated live, with the student taking control to rewrite a paragraph, is better than one sheet of paper between two people. IB Gram does not make home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tutoring is offered only in India.

Nothing claimed that is not held

No regulator or exam board approval, accreditation or partnership is claimed anywhere, because none is held. No grade promises, since examiners mark extended prose. No statistics about past students without the numbers behind them, which is why none appear on this page.

Availability stated up front

Psychology is a minority subject with a small specialist pool in this market. If nobody is free in the slot you need, you are told so rather than handed a substitute, and any fallback arrangement and its rate are stated before anything is agreed.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How will I know whether 0266 tutoring is actually working?+

By reading the marked scripts, which is why the arrangement produces one a week. A timed answer is written, marked against the published criteria, and returned with the lost marks named specifically rather than described as needing more evaluation. Kept in date order, five or six of those are a progress record a parent can read without any subject knowledge. The test at week six is simple: have the faults named in week one stopped recurring? If there is nothing to read by then, the arrangement is not working whatever anybody says about engagement.

What does Cambridge IGCSE Psychology 0266 assess?+

Psychological approaches, a set of core studies, and research methods: variables and operationalisation, experimental design, sampling, reliability and validity, demand characteristics, data handling and research ethics. The methods material is the most predictable part of the subject because it recurs in every series, and it is usually the part taught most quickly in school. The exact topic list, paper structure and mark totals for your child's exam series are set out in the current syllabus document on cambridgeinternational.org, and a revision plan should be built from that version rather than an older one.

Is there any coursework in IGCSE Psychology?+

No. Cambridge IGCSE Psychology is assessed by written examination and nothing is submitted from home, which also means there is no Internal Assessment at this level. Families who have heard about the IB Psychology Internal Assessment, a written report on a replicated experiment, sometimes expect an equivalent here and there is none. The practical consequence is that the academic-honesty question is clean: no tutor could improperly author anything sent to Cambridge. School-set assignments and mocks still feed predicted grades, and the usual boundary applies to those.

My daughter describes the studies but loses the evaluation marks. Why?+

Because describing is what she practised and evaluating is what the marks are for. The fix is a fixed critique framework rather than more reading: for any study, who the participants were and what that makes unsafe to conclude, which method was used and what it cannot show, whether behaviour in that setting resembles behaviour elsewhere, which ethical issue arose and how it was handled, and what the findings actually support. Applied to two or three studies per topic, that gives her something to write every time, and it stops the generic criticisms that score nothing.

How many core studies does a 0266 candidate need to know?+

Fewer than most students try to learn, held far better. Two or three secure studies per topic area, each with a full critique available from memory, consistently outperforms a longer list of summaries. The reason is what happens under exam pressure: a candidate who revised breadth freezes when asked to evaluate rather than describe, because a summary contains nothing to evaluate with. The syllabus for your child's series sets out which studies are required, so start from that document rather than from a revision guide that may cover a superseded version.

What is the difference between a laboratory and a field experiment in 0266?+

Where it happens and what that buys. A laboratory experiment gives the researcher control over extraneous variables, so cause and effect can be claimed more confidently, at the cost of a setting that may not resemble ordinary life. A field experiment takes place in a natural environment, so behaviour is more typical, at the cost of control over everything else going on. Exam questions usually give a scenario and ask which was used plus one disadvantage, so the examinable skill is matching the trade-off to the study described rather than reciting both definitions.

Does 0266 involve maths?+

A limited and very learnable amount, and it is among the cheapest marks on the paper to secure. Candidates need mean, median, mode and range, percentage change, the ability to read values accurately off a graph axis, and the judgement to choose an appropriate chart for a given set of data. Those marks are lost for reasons unconnected to psychology, usually carelessness with an axis or a mean calculated on the wrong column. A weekly data question under timing fixes it quickly, which is why one appears in the first six weeks of any plan here.

Can a tutor mark 0266 past papers against the real mark scheme?+

A tutor marks against the published assessment criteria, which is what makes the feedback usable rather than impressionistic. What a tutor should not do is distribute exam board material: syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are referenced and obtained through your child's school from cambridgeinternational.org rather than sent round as downloads. Reproducing board material is a copyright matter, and with unreleased papers it becomes an exposure that falls on the candidate. Marking properly requires access to the criteria, not the right to republish them.

Is IGCSE Psychology good preparation for A Level Psychology 9990?+

It is useful preparation and not a requirement, and some Abu Dhabi schools admit students to AS Psychology without it. What transfers is methods fluency: the AS course treats research methods in considerably more depth and expects methodological critique to carry the marks, so a student who became fluent at sixteen starts well ahead. What does not transfer is study recall, because the required studies change. That is the argument for spending the IGCSE year on methods rather than on memorising more summaries, if continuing is the plan.

Does Psychology count towards the five IGCSEs for UAE equivalency?+

It counts as an accredited subject like any other. The published British-track requirement is a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five, so a student taking those plus four academic subjects has four counting subjects. Verify current rules at moe.gov.ae; equivalency is a Ministry process no tutor performs or influences.

How do research ethics get examined in 0266?+

As a three-step answer, and most candidates stop after the first. Naming the issue earns the first mark. Saying what it requires of the researcher earns the second. Saying how a particular study breached or handled it earns the third, and that is where weaker scripts run out. Questions usually arrive as a scenario rather than a definition request: participants not told the real aim is a deception question, and the marks sit in what the researcher should have done afterwards, which is debriefing. Being able to produce that third step for any known study is the target.

Should my son take Psychology and Sociology together?+

It is an efficient pair if the timetable allows it, because they share most of the research-methods content including sampling, reliability, validity and research ethics. He learns that material once and is examined on it twice. The separation to maintain is the level of explanation: a psychology answer reaches for a study and a mechanism about individual behaviour, a sociology answer reaches for a concept about group patterns. Candidates taking both occasionally produce the wrong style in the wrong paper, which is a specific thing to practise rather than a reason to avoid the combination.

What does week six of 0266 tutoring usually look like?+

A review rather than a lesson. All five or six marked scripts are read together, the faults that have disappeared are named, the ones that persist are named, and the plan rises, holds or ends on that basis. A student should also be able to predict their own marks more accurately than in week one, which is the clearest sign the criteria have been internalised rather than merely explained. If nothing has moved, the honest answer is to change the approach or stop, and a family is entitled to hear that rather than be invited to buy another term.

What should we send before the first Psychology session?+

One marked script, a list of the topic areas the class has actually covered, and the series the student is entered for. The script is the important one: it shows whether marks went on description instead of evaluation, on generic criticisms, on swapped variables, on ethics listed without substance, or on a misread command word, and those are five different plans. The topic list is more reliable than the published scheme of work. With those three, a first session can be spent marking real work instead of working out what the problem is.

Send one script, get one back marked

If your child is sitting Cambridge IGCSE Psychology 0266 at an Abu Dhabi school, the quickest way to find out whether tutoring would help is to let the work speak. Send one marked answer, the topic areas covered so far, and the series they are entered for. A 0266 specialist will mark a real answer with them in a free trial lesson, one session and no charge, and write back naming the specific fault rather than describing the general standard. After that the arrangement produces a marked script a week, kept in date order, so you can judge it at week six on evidence. Sessions run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
