IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Why 0471 candidates write plenty and still miss the grade

Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism 0471 is a content-light, technique-heavy syllabus. A student opening it for the first time assumes it rewards knowing things about airlines, hotels and resorts. The marks sit somewhere else. They go to candidates who can read the insert they are given, recognise which command term is being used, and answer at the tariff printed beside the question. A candidate who knows the industry well and writes freely about it will still be capped, because the examiner is marking a specific instruction and not general enthusiasm.

In Abu Dhabi this plays out in a particular way. Travel and Tourism is a minority entry in most private schools in the emirate. It usually runs in one option block beside Business Studies and Geography, and it is often taught by a specialist in one of those subjects rather than by someone whose career has been spent on 0471. That is a timetabling reality, not a criticism of the teacher, but it has a consequence a parent can see: the class tends to receive less syllabus-specific past-paper marking than the Maths or Science sets do, and the feedback it does receive is more general.

A tutoring session can fix three things, in this order. First, the reading habit: teaching a candidate to annotate the insert before writing a word, because the marks for application come from the source and nowhere else. Second, the tariff discipline: four lines for a four-mark question, a judgement and a conclusion for an evaluate question, one noun for a one-mark state question. Third, the evidence bank: a small set of destinations and operators the candidate knows in real detail, rather than a long list they know shallowly.

That third point is where an Abu Dhabi student has an advantage almost nobody uses. The syllabus wants destination examples, visitor-management examples, sustainability examples and event-tourism examples. Abu Dhabi supplies all of them. Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat Cultural District, the Etihad Airways hub at Zayed International Airport, the co-located theme parks on Yas Island, the UNESCO-listed Cultural Sites of Al Ain, the controlled visitor numbers on Sir Bani Yas Island, and the hotel-occupancy spike around the Grand Prix weekend are all checkable, all local, and all more persuasive on paper than a recycled textbook paragraph about a European resort.

On delivery, the position is plain. Tutoring for UAE families runs one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For a source-based subject that is not a compromise, because the insert, the mark scheme and the destination data all live on a shared screen where tutor and student annotate the same document at the same time. Everything priced on this page is the market, attributed to whoever published it, and every Cambridge date is cited rather than restated.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0471 sits inside a wider Cambridge route, and Abu Dhabi families usually want to know what comes after it. These are the programmes most relevant to a Travel and Tourism candidate in the emirate, with what each one assumes on entry.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE (Upper Secondary)

The two-year upper-secondary stage where 0471 is taught and examined. Candidates typically carry seven to nine subjects, of which Travel and Tourism is one option choice. Assessment is by written examination in a published series, entered by the school's Cambridge exams officer, and the grade is reported on the Cambridge statement of results before the certificate itself is issued.

In Abu Dhabi, Cambridge IGCSE runs across the British-curriculum schools licensed by the Department of Education and Knowledge. Alongside it, Arabic, Islamic education and social or moral studies are required for the relevant student groups under the federal rule that private schools must follow those subjects regardless of the international curriculum they are licensed to teach, so a Year 10 timetable in the emirate is fuller than the Cambridge subject list alone suggests.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS & A Level

The post-16 Cambridge route. Travel and Tourism continues at this level, and a student who enjoyed 0471 often takes it with Business or Geography. The step up is in evaluation: answers are longer, the sources are denser, and a judgement that is merely asserted no longer scores. Candidates also meet quantitative material such as occupancy and spend data in a form 0471 only hints at.

For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the reported requirement is one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no lower than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. An Abu Dhabi family planning a UAE university application should read that requirement on moe.gov.ae for the current cycle rather than relying on a tutoring page, including this one.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

There is no direct IB equivalent of 0471. Students who want the same territory inside the Diploma usually take Business Management or Geography, where tourism appears as a case-study context rather than a subject in its own right. The transferable skill is the one 0471 teaches badly when untaught: reading a source pack under time pressure and answering the instruction given.

Several Abu Dhabi schools offer the Diploma alongside or instead of a British route, and families on the island and in the Al Raha corridor often choose between the two at the end of Year 11. A 0471 candidate moving into the Diploma should expect the command-term vocabulary to change, because the IB marks against assessment criteria rather than a question-by-question tariff.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Travel and Tourism is rarely the only subject a family is thinking about. These are the Cambridge IGCSE subjects most often requested alongside 0471 by Abu Dhabi families, with what each one is actually assessing.

Travel and Tourism (0471)

Cambridge IGCSE

Written assessment across the industry, worldwide destinations, customer care and working procedures, products and services, marketing and promotion, and destination management. The grade turns on command-term discipline and on applying a given insert rather than on breadth of general knowledge.

Business Studies (0450)

Cambridge IGCSE

The subject most often timetabled against 0471. Candidates lose marks by defining terms correctly and then failing to apply them to the named business in the case study. The analysis-and-evaluation habit transfers directly into Travel and Tourism answers.

Geography (0460)

Cambridge IGCSE

Shares the tourism, sustainability and settlement content with 0471 but assesses it through map, graph and fieldwork skills. Students who can read a resource in Geography usually read a Travel and Tourism insert well too; the reverse is less reliable.

Economics (0455)

Cambridge IGCSE

Supplies the vocabulary a strong 0471 evaluation answer leans on: demand, price elasticity, seasonality, multiplier effects. Marks are lost on diagram labelling and on conclusions that restate the question instead of weighing the two sides.

Enterprise (0454)

Cambridge IGCSE

Project-based and increasingly chosen in Abu Dhabi option blocks. Useful beside 0471 because both reward applied reasoning about a real organisation, though Enterprise assesses the process of planning rather than recall of industry structure.

English as a First Language (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE

The hidden constraint on 0471. A candidate who cannot write a tight explanatory paragraph in English will be capped on the extended-response questions regardless of how well they know the industry. Directed-writing practice pays twice.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Cambridge IGCSE

Common across Abu Dhabi's international cohort. The reading-for-detail skill assessed here is the same skill 0471 inserts demand, and timed summary practice transfers almost one for one into source-based tourism questions.

Mathematics (0580)

Cambridge IGCSE, Core and Extended

Relevant to 0471 because tourism data arrives as percentages, index numbers and occupancy rates. A candidate comfortable with proportional reasoning reads a visitor-arrivals table correctly; one who is not misreads the trend and builds an answer on it.

Information and Communication Technology (0417)

Cambridge IGCSE

Chosen alongside 0471 by students interested in travel distribution and online booking. The practical components are assessed under supervised conditions, which makes the revision rhythm different from a written-only subject and worth planning separately.

Arabic as a Foreign Language (0544)

Cambridge IGCSE

Frequently on the same Abu Dhabi timetable, because Arabic is required for the relevant student groups in private schools in the emirate. Worth noting that an Arabic grade is excluded from the five subjects counted in the reported Ministry of Education equivalency rule.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every 0471 request we receive from Abu Dhabi, and the right one depends on how far through the two-year course a student already is.

Weekly one-to-one through the course

A single recurring slot from the start of Year 10 or early Year 11, running alongside school teaching. The session takes whatever the class covered that week and converts it into exam-shaped answers, so the candidate builds the tariff habit gradually instead of discovering it in a mock.

  • One 60- or 90-minute slot a week, same day, same time
  • Insert annotation and mark-scheme reading in every session
  • A running evidence bank of destinations the student knows properly
  • Short written tasks between sessions, marked before the next one

Pre-series intensive block

A compressed set of sessions in the weeks before the written papers, for a candidate who already knows the content but loses marks on technique. The work is almost entirely past-paper responses marked against the published scheme, with each answer rewritten once in the session until it reaches the tariff.

  • Two or three sessions a week for a fixed number of weeks
  • Every answer marked live with the scheme visible on screen
  • Timing drills so long questions do not eat the short ones
  • A one-page list of the candidate's own repeat errors

Diagnostic and parent briefing

A single session for families who are not yet sure what the problem is. The student sits a section of a past paper, the tutor marks it against the scheme while the parent watches, and the outcome is a plain statement of whether the gap is content, reading, writing or timing. Some families need nothing beyond this.

  • One session, no commitment to a block afterwards
  • A marked script the family keeps
  • A written summary naming the specific weakness
  • An honest answer when tutoring is not what is needed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The written papers, and what each one is really marking

  • Short questions want the exact number of items asked for, and nothing more
  • Application marks are attached to the insert, not to memorised examples
  • Weightings and durations live in the syllabus for your child's series
  • Entry decisions are made by the school's exams officer, not by the family

0471 is assessed by written examination. There is no practical component and no portfolio to build, which makes it unusual among the option subjects an Abu Dhabi student might pick in Year 9. One paper covers the syllabus broadly; the other pushes the same material into applied, source-based questions where the candidate is handed material and expected to use it. The exact duration, mark total and weighting of each component are set in the syllabus for the series your child is entered for, and that document is the first thing a parent should read. This page does not restate figures Cambridge can revise between series.

What matters more than the weighting split is the behaviour each component rewards. The broad paper punishes vagueness: a question asking a candidate to identify two types of tour operator wants two nouns, and a paragraph of context around them earns nothing extra while costing minutes that the longer questions needed. The applied paper punishes the opposite habit. A candidate who has memorised a strong answer about a destination and reproduces it regardless of the insert provided will lose the application marks entirely, because those marks are tied to the source on the desk.

The table below sets out the syllabus areas as the Cambridge material groups them, what the questions in each area actually demand, and the failure pattern we see most often in Abu Dhabi scripts. It is organised the way a tutor would work through a diagnostic, not the way a textbook contents page is ordered. Read the right-hand column first if you are trying to work out whether tutoring would help: if two or three of those failures describe your child, the gap is technique rather than content, and technique is the faster thing to fix.

One practical note on entry. The option, the tier where one exists, and the series are chosen by the school's Cambridge exams officer months before revision begins. A family who disagrees with the entry has to raise it early, not in the spring. That is covered further down, in the section that counts the year backwards.

02

The case-study trap: why a full page can still score three marks

  • Four minutes of annotation before writing is the highest-return habit in the subject
  • A pre-learned destination paragraph scores well only when the question happens to fit it
  • Every point in an applied answer should trace back to something in the insert
  • Evaluation answers need a decision, not just a balanced list

The single most common script we see in this subject is fluent, confident, well organised and under-marked. The candidate has written a page. The content is accurate. The grade is a C. The reason is almost always the same: the answer is about tourism in general when the question was about the material supplied. Examiners cannot award credit for knowledge that is not applied to the given context, and a candidate who has not been taught that explicitly will keep writing the same essay and keep receiving the same mark.

The trap has a second layer. Schools, reasonably, teach case studies. A class spends two lessons on a destination, the students take notes, and those notes become the answer to every destination question thereafter. In a question that happens to suit the taught example, the result is excellent. In a question that specifies a different visitor type, a different season or a different kind of resort, the same paragraph arrives unchanged and most of its marks evaporate. The candidate experiences this as bad luck. It is not luck; it is a technique that works intermittently.

Breaking the habit takes an unglamorous drill. The student is given an insert and a question and is not allowed to write prose for the first four minutes. Instead they underline the visitor type, the location, the time frame and the command term, and write three bullet points, each one quoting or paraphrasing something from the source. Only then do they write. Most students resist this for two or three sessions and then notice their marks have moved, because the application credit they were missing is now there to be awarded.

The same drill fixes a related problem in evaluation questions. Asked to assess whether a development benefits a host community, a candidate will produce three advantages, three disadvantages and then stop, as though balance alone were the answer. The mark scheme wants a judgement. Teaching a student to finish with a sentence that decides something, and gives one reason for deciding it, is a small change that moves extended answers more reliably than any amount of extra content revision.

03

Abu Dhabi as the case study your child already lives in

Candidates everywhere are told to use examples. Most reach for whatever the textbook used, which means an examiner reads the same European resort hundreds of times. An Abu Dhabi student has an alternative that is both more interesting and easier to defend, because they can check it. The emirate contains a purpose-built cultural district, a hub carrier, a cluster of co-located theme parks, a UNESCO-listed oasis landscape, a protected island reserve with controlled visitor numbers and an annual motorsport event that visibly moves hotel pricing. Those are the exact categories the syllabus asks about.

Using local material well is not a matter of mentioning the place. It means being able to state something specific and sourced: who funds an attraction, which visitor markets it targets, what constrains its capacity, how its season behaves. A candidate who can write two sentences of that quality about Louvre Abu Dhabi will out-mark one who writes six vague sentences about a destination they have only read about. The research is also genuinely short: the Department of Culture and Tourism publishes material on the emirate's attractions, and each operator publishes its own.

There is a discipline to this. A local example must still answer the question asked. If the question specifies a mass-market beach destination and the candidate supplies a high-value cultural one, the example is wrong no matter how well known it is. The useful approach is to build a small portfolio covering different visitor types and different management problems, so that whatever the paper specifies, something in the portfolio fits. Four or five well-understood examples beat a dozen half-remembered ones, and the portfolio is one of the first things a session builds.

The table below is a starting grid rather than a finished answer. Each row pairs an Abu Dhabi asset with the syllabus territory it illustrates, the kind of statement a candidate should be able to make about it, and where the underlying information can be verified. Nothing here should go into an exam answer until the student has checked it themselves; that checking is part of what makes the example theirs.

Command terms, tariffs and the shape of a six-mark answer

Every mark in this subject is allocated against an instruction. Cambridge publishes what its command terms mean, and the mark scheme for each paper shows how credit is split. Most candidates have never read either document. They write what feels like a good answer and hope the examiner agrees. Teaching a student to read the command term and the tariff together, before writing, is the single change that moves scripts fastest, and it takes about three sessions to become automatic.

The tariff tells a candidate how much to write. A one-mark question wants one creditable item. A four-mark question usually wants either four separate points or two points developed once each; the mark scheme shows which. A question worth eight or ten marks is asking for structure, not volume: points on both sides, each developed, then a judgement. Students who write to length rather than to tariff run out of time on the questions that pay most, which is why a good script often looks less impressive than a weak one at first glance.

The command term tells a candidate what kind of sentence to write. Describe wants an accurate account; explain wants a reason linked to a consequence; analyse wants the parts of a situation and how they interact; evaluate wants a weighed judgement. A candidate who answers explain with a description has written something true that cannot be credited. This is the most frequent cause of the gap between a student's apparent subject knowledge and their actual mark, and it is entirely teachable.

The table below gives the working version we use in sessions. The tariffs shown are the ranges these terms commonly carry rather than fixed values, because the allocation varies by paper and series; the mark scheme for your child's paper is the authority. What does not vary is the kind of sentence each term expects, and that is the part worth drilling.

The 0471 year counted backwards from the entry deadline

Families plan forwards from today. Cambridge works backwards from a series. The gap between those two habits is where most avoidable damage happens, because the decisions that constrain a grade are taken months before anyone feels urgency. Entries close, forecast grades are submitted, and timetables are issued by zone, all while a Year 11 student still thinks of the exam as something in the distant future.

Two facts from the Cambridge exam administration guidance are worth a parent's attention. The first is that IGCSE exams run in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, so the series your child sits is a choice the school has already made. The second is sharper: every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Download the timetable through the school, not from a search result.

The table below counts the June series backwards for a UAE centre, because June and November are the only two series an Abu Dhabi candidate can be entered for. Cambridge does administer a February and March sitting, but it is offered to India only, so no Abu Dhabi school enters it and any 0471 timetable you are shown with February papers on it belongs to another country. What the table gives you is the shape of the calendar rather than a set of days to diary: entries closing months before the first paper, forecast grades submitted before the papers are sat, results reaching the centre weeks after the exam period, and certificates arriving later still. The real decision inside that shape is June or November. June is the default for a candidate finishing Year 11 on schedule; November exists for the student who needs one more term of teaching, or who sat June, was disappointed, and wants a second attempt with the January results in hand. Read the live dates from Cambridge through your school rather than from any page that restates them, because each centre sits one of six zone timetables.

There is one IB-adjacent caution worth stating plainly, because Abu Dhabi families often have children in both systems. No IB exam or results date appears anywhere on this page. The IB's own site is not reliably reachable for automated checking, so any IB date here would be second-hand. Confirm IB dates with the school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org directly.

What 0471 tutoring costs in the Abu Dhabi market

Three of the six most visible providers in this market publish no price at all, and two of the ones that do quote in US dollars, a currency no Abu Dhabi family transacts in. That is the gap this section fills. Every figure below is the market, attributed to the provider that published it, with the month it was read. None of it is an IB Gram price list, and a page that quoted one without the session length, subject and tutor profile attached would be telling you very little anyway.

Two things specific to Travel and Tourism push a quote upwards, and a parent should know both before negotiating. The first is scarcity: 0471 is a minority entry, so the pool of tutors who have actually marked it against a published scheme is small, and scarce subjects sit at the top of any band rather than the middle. The second is that a generalist humanities tutor can be perfectly competent at the content and still not know the command-term tariffs, which is precisely the thing a 0471 candidate is paying to fix. Ask directly whether the tutor has marked 0471 responses against the scheme, and ask to see that happen in the first session.

On what a family actually needs, the honest answer is fewer hours than most quotes assume. Where the problem is technique rather than content, the change tends to arrive inside six to ten sessions, because the student is learning a small number of habits rather than a syllabus. Where content really is missing, the number rises and the right conversation is about whether the entry itself still makes sense. Any provider quoting a long fixed block before seeing a marked script is selling a package, not a diagnosis.

One pricing note that is easy to miss. Market in-home rates look higher than online rates partly because travel sits inside the hourly figure. A tutor driving from the island to Khalifa City at 5pm is spending time that someone pays for, and it is not the tutor. Comparing an online rate with an in-home rate without accounting for that is comparing two different products.

Online one-to-one against an in-home visit for a source-based subject

Abu Dhabi parents searching for help with this subject are usually picturing someone at the dining table. It is worth testing that picture against what the subject actually requires, because 0471 is unusually well suited to a shared screen. Nearly everything a session needs is a document: an insert, a question paper, a mark scheme, a visitor-arrivals table, a destination's own published information. Annotating those together, with both people seeing the same cursor, is a better lesson than passing printed sheets across a table.

The travel economics matter too. An in-home tutor covering the island, Khalifa City and Al Raha in the same week is pricing forty to ninety minutes of driving into every visit, and at 5pm on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street that estimate is optimistic. The family pays for it either in the hourly rate or in a session that starts late and finishes early. Removing the drive is what makes a 4.30pm start realistic on a weekday in Khalifa City rather than aspirational.

The decisive argument is the tutor pool. In-home tutoring narrows the choice to people willing to drive to your community on your evening. For Maths that is a manageable constraint, because the local pool is deep. For a minority option subject it can mean the difference between a specialist who has marked 0471 scripts and a competent generalist who has not. Online removes the geography from the matching problem, which is exactly what a scarce subject needs.

Being plain about what is on offer: IB Gram does not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE, and home visits are a service offered only in India. The comparison below is therefore between what we provide and what the local market provides, set out so a family can decide rather than discover. ADEK, the tutor permit, equivalency and where honest help stops

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which according to the federal government's own information service supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. That is worth knowing for two reasons. It is the body whose published inspection outcomes describe your child's school, and it is the body whose professional-ethics expectations shape what a serving teacher may do outside school hours. Press reporting indicates that Abu Dhabi rules prohibit school staff from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school; a family should verify the current policy wording with ADEK directly before relying on it.

Individual tutoring in the UAE is permitted but regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced through Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The federal government's own pages state that the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and that eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. They also state that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no figure should be quoted to you, including by us. IB Gram makes no claim to any regulator or examination board accreditation, and any provider that does should be asked to show the permit or centre number.

On equivalency: a 0471 grade can count towards the Ministry of Education's British-track requirement, because the two subjects reported as excluded from the count of five are Arabic and Islamic education. The reported requirement is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at that grade or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. A page currently ranking for these searches states six subjects rather than five, which is why a family should read the requirement on moe.gov.ae for the current cycle. No tutor performs equivalency, and nobody should present it as something they can secure for you.

Finally, the boundary on what help means. A tutor teaches, questions, explains a mark scheme and gives feedback on what the student has produced. A tutor does not supply assessed material to be handed in as the student's own, and no provider should offer to. For 0471 this is straightforward, since the subject is examined by written paper under supervised conditions, but the same principle governs how we handle practice answers: the student writes, the tutor marks, and the words that reach the examiner are the student's.

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is not one commute. The emirate runs from the island out through Saadiyat and Yas to the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor and on to the newer mainland communities, and where a family lives changes what time a session can realistically start.

Saadiyat Island

Home to Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Saadiyat Cultural District, which makes it the most useful postcode in the emirate for a 0471 candidate gathering first-hand destination evidence. Families here usually run sessions between 4.30pm and 7pm.

Yas Island

The co-located theme-park cluster and Yas Marina Circuit sit here, giving a candidate visitor-management and event-tourism material within a short drive. Grand Prix week reshapes the family calendar and is worth planning revision around.

Al Reem Island

Dense residential towers with a young school-age population and a short bridge commute to the island. Evening slots fill early here, and families tend to prefer two shorter weekly sessions over one long one.

Khalifa City

Villa communities with a large British-curriculum cohort and a long school run. A 4pm start is rarely achievable by car; online sessions from 4.30pm are, which is the practical argument for the format in this part of the emirate.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A corridor of international schools and family villas between the island and the airport. Parents here often ask for one session a week in term time and a tighter block in the weeks before the series.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods with established British-curriculum schools and shorter commutes. Useful for 0471 because the Corniche, Qasr Al Hosn and the marina sit close enough for a candidate to collect their own observations.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Newer mainland communities where school runs are long and tutor travel time is real money. These are the areas where the in-home market rate quietly absorbs forty minutes of driving each way.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat, Al Bateen and the island

The island and its nearest bridge communities hold most of the emirate's established British-curriculum provision. Option blocks here are wide enough that Travel and Tourism appears as a genuine choice rather than a filler, which is also why 0471 candidates in this cluster tend to be the ones who chose it deliberately.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Repton Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Al Reef

The mainland corridor between the island and the airport carries a large British and American curriculum population. Travel and Tourism entries here are smaller, and families more often discover mid-Year 11 that nobody in the household knows how the paper is marked.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Raha International School
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Amity International School Abu Dhabi

Mussafah, Al Wathba and the Indian-curriculum schools

A large cohort following Indian boards sits alongside the Cambridge schools, and families moving between the two routes are the ones most often caught by option-block differences. Travel and Tourism is one of the subjects that does not map neatly across.

  • Abu Dhabi Indian School
  • Bright Riders School
  • Sunrise English Private School
  • Shining Star International School
  • Merryland International School

Schools are named here only as local context for families comparing options; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the series and the symptom

The two facts that shape everything else are which series your child is entered for and what the problem looks like on paper. A low mark with fluent writing is a different job from a low mark with thin content. If you have a marked script or a mock paper, send it; it saves a session.

  2. 02

A no-charge first lesson with a marked answer

The first session is free, one per family, with no card details taken. Your child answers a section of a past paper and the tutor marks it against the published scheme while you watch if you want to. You finish with a marked script and a plain statement of where the marks went.

  3. 03

Agree the format and the slot

Weekly through the course, an intensive block before the series, or a single diagnostic. We propose one and say why. The slot is fixed to Gulf Standard Time and chosen around the school run, which in Khalifa City and Al Raha usually means 4.30pm or later.

  4. 04

Build the evidence bank alongside the technique

Each session pairs a technique drill with one addition to the student's own case-study portfolio, drawn where possible from the emirate so the student can check it. By the pre-series block the candidate has four or five examples they understand properly rather than a long list they half-remember.

  5. 05

    Review against the backward calendar

We check progress against the series calendar rather than against the term, because entries, forecast grades and the zone timetable all fall earlier than families expect. If the sensible conclusion is to reduce sessions or stop, we will say so rather than extend a block.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking, not talking

The lesson a 0471 candidate needs is somebody marking their writing against the published scheme and showing them the gap. Every session includes written work marked live on screen, which is also how a parent can judge whether the tutoring is working without taking anyone's word for it.

Figures that carry a source

Every AED band on this page names the kind of provider that published it and the month it was read. Nothing is presented as an IB Gram price list, and nothing is a statistic without a source. A page that cannot show where a number came from should not be used to plan a budget.

A scarce subject matched without geography

Travel and Tourism is a minority entry in Abu Dhabi, so the constraint on quality is the size of the pool, not the distance. Online one-to-one matching removes the drive from the equation and makes a genuine 0471 specialist possible for a family in Al Shamkha as much as on Saadiyat.

Local evidence a candidate can verify

The emirate supplies real material for destinations, visitor management, heritage constraints and event seasonality. Sessions build a portfolio from it and insist the student checks each claim themselves, which is what turns a mentioned place into a usable example.

Clear limits, stated first

Lessons are online, one-to-one and over live video; home visits are not part of what we do in the UAE. We hold no regulator or board accreditation and do not claim any. A tutor marks and teaches, and the work that reaches an examiner is written by the student.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Is Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism 0471 an easy option for a Year 10 student in Abu Dhabi?+

It is accessible in content and demanding in technique, which is a different thing from easy. The industry material is readable and most students pick it up quickly. The marks, though, are awarded against command terms and tariffs, and a candidate who writes well but answers the wrong instruction will sit in the middle of the grade range regardless of effort. Students who struggle with timed extended writing in English often find 0471 harder than expected. The fair summary is that it rewards disciplined readers and punishes fluent waffle, so the right question is not whether it is easy but whether your child reads questions carefully.

Which written components does a 0471 candidate sit, and how do they differ?+

The syllabus is assessed by written examination only, with one paper covering the subject content broadly and another pushing the same material into applied, source-based questions where candidates are given material to use. The durations, mark totals and weightings are set in the syllabus for the series your child is entered for, so read that document rather than relying on any figure restated on a tutoring page. The behavioural difference matters more than the split: the broad paper punishes vagueness and rewards precision on short questions, while the applied paper punishes pre-learned answers that ignore the insert supplied.

Why does my child write a full page and still only score three marks?+

Almost always because the answer is about tourism in general when the question was about the material supplied. Application marks are attached to the insert, so knowledge that is never connected to the given visitor type, location or season cannot be credited however accurate it is. The second common cause is a mismatch between the command term and the sentence written: an explain question answered with a description produces something true that earns nothing. Both are technique faults rather than knowledge gaps, which is good news, because technique moves faster than content. Four minutes of annotation before writing fixes more of this than extra revision does.

Can a 0471 candidate use Abu Dhabi attractions as their case-study examples?+

Yes, and it is usually a better choice than a textbook example, provided the example fits the question. The emirate offers a purpose-built cultural district on Saadiyat, a hub carrier at Zayed International Airport, a co-located park cluster on Yas Island, a World Heritage oasis landscape at Al Ain, a controlled-access island reserve and an annual motorsport weekend that visibly moves hotel pricing. Those cover most of the syllabus categories. The discipline is to match the example to the visitor type the question names, and to be able to state something specific and checkable rather than simply naming the place.

Does a Travel and Tourism grade count towards the five subjects the Ministry of Education requires?+

On the British track as reported in July 2026, the requirement is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and the two subjects reported as excluded from that count are Arabic and Islamic education. Travel and Tourism is not excluded, so it can count as one of the five. A page currently ranking for these searches states six subjects rather than five, so read the requirement on moe.gov.ae for the current cycle before planning a subject list around it. No tutoring provider carries out equivalency or can secure an outcome from it.

What does a Cambridge 0471 tutor charge per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

The UAE market, read in October 2026, runs from about AED 45 to AED 150 an hour for budget or university-student online tutors, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to AED 500 for an in-home visit with travel inside the figure, and AED 200 to AED 450 or more for a declared IGCSE or IB specialist. One premium provider publishes AED 650. Each of those bands comes from the provider that published it. A minority option subject such as 0471 tends to sit at the upper end of whichever band applies, because the pool of tutors who have actually marked it is small.

When do Abu Dhabi schools enter candidates for Cambridge Travel and Tourism, and when do entries close?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE exams in a June series and a November series, and your school chooses which one your child sits; the February and March sitting belongs to India and is not open to Abu Dhabi centres. Entries close months before the papers rather than weeks: for a June sitting the centre's final entry deadline falls in the spring, and entries for the November series close earlier in the year too, well before the autumn papers. The exact day is printed on the statement of entry the school issues, and that is the document to ask for rather than a date restated on a website. Get the timetable through the school as well, because each centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones and Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who uses the wrong zone version.

Are 0471 lessons delivered at our villa in Abu Dhabi, or online?+

Online, one-to-one, over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India, and we would rather say that plainly than let a family discover it at booking. For this subject the format is a genuine advantage rather than a compromise, because almost everything a session uses is a document. The insert, the mark scheme and a destination's published data all sit on a shared screen where tutor and student annotate the same page together, which is difficult to replicate with printed sheets.

How many sessions does a 0471 student usually need before the June papers?+

Where the problem is technique rather than content, the shift usually appears inside six to ten sessions, because the student is learning a small number of habits: annotate before writing, answer to the tariff, match the sentence to the command term, finish an evaluation with a judgement. Where real content is missing the number rises, and the honest conversation at that point is about whether the entry still makes sense. Any provider quoting a long fixed block before seeing a marked script is selling a package rather than making a diagnosis, and a parent is entitled to ask what the diagnosis is.

My child is strong in Geography but weak in Travel and Tourism. Why the gap?+

Usually because Geography trains resource interpretation explicitly while Travel and Tourism assumes it. A Geography student is taught to read a map, a graph and a photograph and to answer from them, and that habit is examined directly. In 0471 the same skill is required but less visibly taught, so a capable student can slip into writing from memory. The other common factor is vocabulary precision: Travel and Tourism distinguishes products from services and operators from intermediaries, and a candidate who blurs those categories loses the discrimination marks even when the underlying understanding is sound.

Can a tutor help my child prepare the destination data they need to quote?+

A tutor can show your child where to find it, how to judge whether it is reliable, and how to turn it into a sentence that earns marks. What a tutor should not do is hand over a ready-made paragraph to memorise, because that is how pre-learned answers get written into papers they do not fit. In practice a session looks like this: the student finds the figure from the attraction's own published information or from the emirate's tourism body, the tutor questions whether it answers the question asked, and the student rewrites until it does. The example ends up theirs.

Does Travel and Tourism help with admission to a hospitality or tourism degree in the UAE?+

It is relevant preparation and it demonstrates interest, but admission requirements are set by each university and should be read from the institution's own published entry criteria rather than inferred from a subject choice. For UAE universities, certificate equivalency through the Ministry of Education is a separate process from admission, and the British-track requirement is about the number and grade of accredited subjects rather than which subjects they are. Tutoring is not required for any of this, and any page implying that a qualification cannot be achieved without it should be read with caution.

Must a tutor hold a MoHRE permit to teach Abu Dhabi families privately?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced through Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the federal government's own pages state that it is granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those offering private tutoring without a permit are stated to be subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you. Press reporting also indicates Abu Dhabi school staff may not tutor students enrolled at their own school.

Can 0471 sessions move to a later evening slot during Ramadan?+

Yes, and most families ask for it. School timings compress during the month, energy levels shift, and a 4.30pm session that worked in January often does not work in the holy month. Sessions can move to a post-Iftar slot, shorten to 45 minutes, or pause entirely and resume afterwards with the block extended rather than lost. Because this subject rewards short, frequent technique practice rather than long content sessions, it adapts to a compressed month better than most. Tell us early so the slot can be reserved before the evening hours fill up across the emirate.

What happens if no Cambridge 0471 specialist is free when we enquire?+

We say so rather than substitute quietly. Travel and Tourism is a minority entry and the pool of tutors who have marked it against a published scheme is genuinely small, so there are weeks when the honest answer is that nothing suitable is open in your preferred slot. The options we will put to you are a different time, a short wait for a named tutor, or a humanities specialist who will be introduced as exactly that rather than as a 0471 expert. If none of those works for your family, we will tell you that too.

Start with one marked answer, not a package

The quickest way to find out whether a 0471 problem is technique or content is to have one answer marked against the published scheme and explained. That is what the no-charge first lesson is for: your child writes, the tutor marks it live, and you keep the script and a plain statement of where the marks went. From there the sensible format is usually a weekly slot through the course or a short block before the series, timed to Gulf Standard Time and set around your school run. If the conclusion is that tutoring is not what your child needs, we will say that instead.
