IB DP Computer Science Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Computer Science tutor in Abu Dhabi is priced by scarcity rather than by difficulty. Few schools in the emirate run the course, fewer teachers specialise in it, and the subset who also know what the examiners do with an abstract data structure question is smaller again. This page sets out what that scarcity does to an hourly rate, where the hours actually go, and how to tell a developer apart from a Diploma specialist. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Priced honestly against a thin Abu Dhabi specialist pool
  • Separate plans for the programming half and the theory half
  • Feedback on the student's own computational solution, never code supplied
  • First session at no charge, no card held, before any commitment

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Why Computer Science is the most scarcity-priced subject in this emirate

Every other Diploma subject in Abu Dhabi has a tutor market. Computer Science has a short list. The reason is structural rather than academic: comparatively few schools in the emirate run the Diploma course at all, so comparatively few teachers have taught it, and the people who can code professionally mostly have better-paid work than tutoring sixteen-year-olds on a Tuesday evening. Scarcity, not difficulty, is what sits behind the rate.

The market bands are the same ones that apply across IB tutoring: roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour for a specialist, per Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200, and BartyED publishing AED 650 for an examiner tier. Computer Science reliably sits in the upper half of the specialist band and sometimes above it, and a family comparing it with a Mathematics quote is comparing two very different supply situations rather than two levels of greed.

The second thing that moves the number is which half of the subject is broken, because this course has two halves that barely resemble each other. One half is a written theory examination covering system fundamentals, computer organisation, networks and computational thinking, with abstract data structures and resource management added at Higher Level. The other half is a built artefact: a computational solution designed, implemented, documented and defended by the student. A tutor who is strong at one is frequently weak at the other, and a family paying for the wrong strength is spending at the top of the market for something that does not help.

The third is the credential problem, and it is specific to this subject. In Biology a tutor who knows biology is probably useful. In Computer Science a tutor who knows programming may be of very little use, because the written papers examine things working developers rarely think about: tracing pseudocode by hand, describing a specific sorting behaviour in examiner language, explaining why a particular data structure suits a particular access pattern. Capable engineers lose marks on these papers too. What you are buying is examination literacy, and it is worth asking directly how recently a tutor taught this course rather than how long they have been coding.

The fourth input is local and legal. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of Abu Dhabi private schools, and Gulf News reported that its professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. The MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years and carries a code of conduct saying the same. In a subject where the resident specialist pool is already short, those rules shorten it further. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we run only in India, and every Abu Dhabi lesson runs online over live video.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Computer Science sits in Group 4 of the Diploma alongside the sciences. The routes below determine what a student brings to it, and in this subject the variation between students arriving is wider than in any other Group 4 course.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across two years plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Computer Science combines core theory topics with an option topic and a computational solution developed by the student. Higher Level adds further topics, including abstract data structures and resource management, and an additional paper. Confirm the exact structure and weightings against the subject guide for your child's examination session, since the course has been revised.

Diploma Computer Science is taught at a minority of Abu Dhabi IB schools, and where it runs the group is often very small. A class of four or five is common. That has two consequences a family should price in: almost no peer code to learn from, and a teacher who may be covering the subject alongside another rather than specialising in it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Design assesses inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating, which is almost exactly the shape of the Diploma computational solution. A student who has been through MYP Design arrives understanding why documentation exists. A student who has only written code for fun arrives able to build and unable to justify.

Where an Abu Dhabi school runs MYP to the end of Year 11, students reach DP1 Computer Science with design-cycle habits and little formal theory. That profile is cheaper to support than the reverse, because design habits are the slower of the two to build and they are already there.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Combines a small number of DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. Computer Science inside a CP is a natural pairing with a technology-related career study, and the student sits the same papers and submits the same computational solution without the Theory of Knowledge load.

The Career-related Programme is uncommon in Abu Dhabi, but where it exists the career-related study sometimes supplies a genuine client for the computational solution. A real user with real requirements is a considerable advantage in a project that is assessed partly on how well the solution answers an actual need.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

An Extended Essay in Computer Science is a separate 4,000-word piece supervised at school and distinct from the computational solution. A student attempting both has two independent technical pieces in the same subject within the same two years, which needs planning in DP1 rather than discovering in DP2.

Abu Dhabi schools generally set internal core deadlines ahead of the IB's own windows. Where the Extended Essay and the computational solution deadlines fall in the same term, a family's monthly spend commonly doubles without anybody having planned for it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Computer Science is the subject here, at both levels. The ones after it are what Abu Dhabi students pair it with, each annotated for what the combination does to the number of hours a family ends up buying.

Computer Science (Higher Level)

Higher Level, Group 4

Core theory plus additional Higher Level topics including abstract data structures and resource management, an option topic, an additional paper built on an annually released case study, and the computational solution. The abstract data structures content is what separates a developer from a Diploma specialist: linked lists and trees are examined on behaviour and justification rather than on whether the student can implement one.

Computer Science (Standard Level)

Standard Level, Group 4

The core theory topics and an option topic, plus the same computational solution carrying a larger share of the Standard Level grade. No Higher Level case study paper. For a Standard Level candidate the solution is proportionally the most valuable thing they control, which changes where support should be spent.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares logic, functions and sequences with the computational thinking topic, and the proof habits transfer into algorithm justification. A single tutor across Computer Science and Analysis can reduce total hours where the student's weakness is in the mathematical half of computational thinking.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Higher Level and Standard Level

Supplies descriptive statistics and modelling that suit data-oriented computational solutions. Students taking Applications sometimes pick a project that visualises or analyses data, and the mathematics half of that is already in hand.

Physics

Higher Level and Standard Level

The common Group 4 companion for students heading towards engineering. Shares almost no content with Computer Science, so there is no hours saving from combining them, and a family should expect two separate specialists and two separate rates.

Digital Society

Higher Level and Standard Level

Often confused with Computer Science and genuinely different: Digital Society examines the social, ethical and political dimensions of technology rather than how systems are built. Where a student takes both, the ethics content in the Computer Science papers becomes considerably easier.

Design Technology

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares the design cycle with the computational solution, including user requirements, iterative development and evaluation against criteria. Students taking both arrive at the solution's documentation requirements already understanding why they exist.

English A: Language and Literature

Higher Level and Standard Level

The computational solution is assessed partly on written documentation, and students who build competently and write poorly lose marks that have nothing to do with their code. Where that is the pattern, the problem belongs here and should be diagnosed as such rather than paid for as Computer Science tuition.

Extended Essay in Computer Science

Core, 4,000 words

Separate from the computational solution and supervised at school. A tutor can teach research method, scope control and technical writing, and comment on drafts the student has written. The text and any code must be the student's own, and the school supervisor records authenticity as part of the assessment.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma candidates

Shares no content and competes for the same weeks as the solution's development deadlines at most Abu Dhabi schools. Any two-year cost plan should mark the term when a weekly technical hour is unaffordable in time rather than in money.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes a Computer Science plan takes in this emirate, matched to the two halves of the subject and to the scarcity problem behind the rate. All run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Theory and examination-literacy block

Sessions on the written papers: tracing pseudocode by hand, describing algorithm behaviour in the language the mark scheme credits, justifying a data structure against an access pattern, and answering the system fundamentals and networks questions that reward precision over fluency. This is the block that competent young programmers most often need and least often expect.

  • Pseudocode traced on paper, not run on a machine
  • Answers rewritten in examiner language against real mark schemes
  • Data structure questions answered by justification, not implementation
  • Timed sections sat under paper conditions in the final third

Computational solution supervision

Front-loaded hours across the project: scoping a problem small enough to finish and real enough to assess, establishing a genuine user and their requirements, planning the development record, and testing against criteria rather than against whether it runs. The tutor teaches method and reviews the student's own work. No code is supplied.

  • Scope fixed before any implementation starts
  • A real user and real requirements established early
  • Development record planned as it happens, not reconstructed later
  • Documentation reviewed against the published criteria

Programming fundamentals block

For students who chose the subject on interest rather than experience and are behind on the practical half. Control structures, data types, functions, arrays and collections, and the habits that make code readable enough to be documented. Mechanical, bounded, and considerably cheaper than trying to carry a project without it.

  • Taught in the language the school uses, not the tutor's favourite
  • Exercises small enough to complete inside a session
  • Reading other people's code as well as writing one's own
  • Finishes when the student can scope their own project

01

Why an hour of Computer Science costs more than an hour of Maths here

The question comes up in almost every first conversation and it deserves a straight answer rather than an explanation about value. Mathematics is taught in every school in the emirate by several teachers each, so the Abu Dhabi tutor pool for it is deep. Diploma Computer Science is taught in a minority of schools, often by one teacher, sometimes by a teacher covering it alongside another subject. The pool is shallow, and a shallow pool prices higher.

There is a second supply effect specific to this subject. The people who can do the practical half to a professional standard have alternative employment that pays considerably better than tutoring. In Biology or History, subject expertise has relatively few competing commercial uses at that level. In Computer Science it has many, which means the opportunity cost of an evening hour is higher for the tutor and shows up in the rate.

The third effect is the dual competence requirement. A family needs someone who can both build and explain to an examiner's standard, and those two skills are not correlated as strongly as parents assume. A developer with fifteen years of experience may mark a pseudocode trace incorrectly because professional practice does not involve tracing pseudocode. A teacher who knows the papers inside out may not be able to help a student debug a project. The person who can do both is rarer than either, and that is the premium.

What a family should take from this is not resignation but precision. Because the rate is high, the diagnosis matters more here than in any other subject. Buying four hours of exactly the right thing at the top of the market is cheaper than buying twelve hours of approximately the right thing at the bottom of it. The table below sets out the supply situation that produces the rate.

Two halves, and which one you are paying to fix

This subject is two courses taped together, and a family that has not worked out which half is failing is about to spend a great deal at the top of the market for nothing. The halves fail in completely different ways and the symptoms are easy to tell apart once somebody names them.

The theory half is examined in writing. System fundamentals, computer organisation, networks, computational thinking, plus abstract data structures and resource management at Higher Level, plus the chosen option. The marks here go to precision and to examiner language. A question asking a student to outline the behaviour of a particular algorithm wants specific stated characteristics, not a working implementation. A question on a data structure wants a justification tied to an access pattern. Students who code well often answer these questions correctly and informally and score poorly for it.

The practical half is the computational solution: a problem scoped, a user identified, a system designed, built, tested and documented. The marks here are substantially for the process and the record, not for how impressive the artefact is. The commonest expensive mistake in Abu Dhabi is a student who builds something far too ambitious, finishes late, and documents it retrospectively from memory. The artefact is good and the marks are not, because the record of how it was developed does not exist.

The diagnostic is quick. Look at a marked written paper and a current project state side by side. If the paper shows informal but correct answers, the problem is examination literacy and it is four to six sessions of rewriting answers against mark schemes. If the paper is fine and the project has no development record, the problem is process and the sessions go there. If both are weak the student may be behind on programming fundamentals, which is the longest and cheapest-per-hour of the three to fix.

03

The computational solution, and where its hours actually go

The computational solution carries a fifth to a third of the subject grade depending on level, and for a Standard Level candidate it is the largest single thing they control. It is also the component where the money is most often spent in the wrong place, because families buy help with building and the marks are mostly elsewhere.

Scope comes first and it is the cheapest hour on the whole project. A student who chooses to build a full inventory system with user authentication, reporting and a mobile interface has chosen a project that will not be finished, and no amount of later support recovers that. A student who chooses a narrow problem for a real user, with three or four well-specified requirements, has chosen a project that can be completed, tested and documented properly. One honest hour at the start prevents a term of rescue.

A real user comes second. The criteria reward a solution that answers an actual need, which means the need has to exist and be describable. Abu Dhabi students most often find one in a parent's workplace, a school club, a family business or a community organisation. A hypothetical user produces hypothetical requirements and a project that cannot demonstrate it solved anything.

The development record comes third and it is where most marks are quietly lost. The record has to be kept as the work happens: decisions taken, alternatives considered, problems met, tests run and what they showed. Reconstructed at the end from memory it is thin, and it reads thin. Setting up the routine before implementation starts takes one session and protects a large share of the component. What a tutor may do across all of this is bounded: teach method, review the student's own work, and explain what the criteria reward. Supplying code or writing documentation for the student is malpractice under IB rules, and the consequence falls on the candidate.

The Higher Level case study, released annually

  • Higher Level only, released ahead of the examination each year
  • The paper assumes independent reading around a technical field
  • Four to six sessions across the lead time is a realistic block
  • Identical for every candidate, so it can reasonably be shared

Higher Level Computer Science includes an additional paper built on a case study released ahead of the examination, on a topic set by the IB each year. It is one of the few components in the entire Diploma where a student has months of notice about the specific material they will be examined on, and most families do nothing with that.

The case study covers a technical area the core syllabus does not treat in depth, and the paper assumes the student has read around it. That reading is the work, and it is self-directed: terminology from the field, how the technology actually functions, the trade-offs its designers face, and the ethical and social questions it raises. A student who meets the case study six weeks before the paper is reading unfamiliar technical material under time pressure, which is the most expensive way to do it.

What a tutor adds here is structure rather than content delivery. Breaking the case into the terminology that has to be secure, the mechanisms that have to be explained rather than named, and the evaluative questions the paper is likely to ask. Four to six sessions spread across the lead time is a realistic block, and because the case is identical for every candidate it is one of the few parts of this subject where two students could reasonably share a session.

The cost point is about timing rather than rate. The case is released at a known point. Preparation bought then costs the same per hour as preparation bought in the spring and achieves considerably more, and in the spring the specialist pool in this emirate is at its thinnest. For a subject already priced by scarcity, buying in the scarcest month is the avoidable mistake.

05

Telling a developer apart from a Diploma specialist

  • Ask when the tutor last taught this course and at which level
  • Ask which paper their students lose marks on, and expect specifics
  • Ask what they will and will not do with the computational solution
  • Treat an unevidenced examiner claim as a reason for caution, not a premium

This is the most important due diligence in the subject and almost nobody does it, because the credentials that sound most impressive are the least predictive. Years of professional experience, a computer science degree from a well-known university, a portfolio of shipped products: none of those tells you whether someone can move a Diploma grade.

Four questions sort it quickly. Ask when the tutor last taught this specific course, and to what level. Ask which paper their students most often lose marks on and why; a specialist answers immediately and with specifics, a developer answers generally. Ask how they would handle a student who codes well and scores 4s, which is the single most common Abu Dhabi profile in this subject. Ask what they will and will not do with a computational solution.

The fourth answer is the most revealing. A tutor who offers to help build the artefact, fix the code or tidy up the documentation is describing malpractice under IB rules, with consequences that fall on your child rather than on them. A tutor who says they will teach method, review the student's own work and explain what the criteria reward is describing the job. Some providers in this market sell completed assessed work outright; in this subject the offer is unusually tempting and unusually dangerous, because unlike an essay, code carries forensic traces of its origin.

One further caution worth stating plainly. Do not pay a premium for a claim of examiner status that cannot be evidenced, and do not accept any suggestion that examiner status brings access to marking practice, boundaries or unseen material. It does not, and a provider implying that it does has told you something important about how they operate.

06

When your Abu Dhabi school does not offer the course

  • Most computing degrees do not require school-level Computer Science
  • An externally supported candidate still needs a school supervisor and an authenticity record
  • A primary teaching plan is a two-year weekly commitment, not a block
  • Digital Society is a different subject, not an easier version of this one

A real situation in this emirate, and families usually discover it at subject-choice time in Year 11. Diploma Computer Science runs at a minority of Abu Dhabi IB schools, and a student who wants it may find their school does not offer it, or offers it only if enough students choose it and then withdraws it when four do.

The options are worth laying out honestly rather than optimistically. Moving school for one subject is a large decision and rarely the right one. Taking a different Group 4 subject and pursuing computing at university is extremely common and closes fewer doors than families fear, since most computing degrees do not require school-level Computer Science. Taking the course with heavy outside support is possible where the school will register the candidate but cannot teach it, and this is the scenario where tutoring moves from supplementary to primary, with the hours and the cost that implies.

If that third route is being considered, three things need checking before any money is spent. Whether the school will enter the candidate for the examination and supervise the computational solution, since the internal assessment requires a supervising teacher and an authenticity record. Whether the school's Diploma coordinator supports the arrangement. And whether the family understands that a primary teaching plan is a weekly commitment across two years rather than a block, which at specialist market rates of AED 200 to AED 450 an hour is a material sum.

There is a fourth option families rarely consider and should. Digital Society examines the social, ethical and political dimensions of technology and is offered more widely. It is genuinely a different subject rather than an easier version of this one, and for a student interested in technology's effects rather than its construction it may be the better choice on the merits rather than a consolation.

07

Market rates, read against a thin supply market

Three of the six competitor pages measured in this research set publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars. The AED bands below are the market's and are attributed to the providers and rate tables that published them. They are not a price list for this platform.

Qualified subject tutoring online runs roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. IB and A-Level specialists run AED 200 to AED 450 and above in Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is counted. BartyED publishes AED 650 for an examiner tier. Entry tiers from AED 33 to AED 65 at Tutopiya and EdFlik are university-student and group formats.

For Computer Science specifically, read the specialist band as the floor rather than the midpoint. A tutor who has taught this course recently, is comfortable with the Higher Level data structures content, can supervise a computational solution properly and is lawfully permitted to tutor in the UAE is a narrow description, and narrow descriptions do not price at the bottom of a band.

The useful counterweight is that the hours needed are often fewer than families assume. An examination-literacy block is four to six sessions and shows in the next marked paper. A scoping conversation is one hour and protects a whole project. Those are small purchases with large effects, and they are what the diagnosis in a first session exists to identify. Monthly package rates circulating in this market are around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions; check the real session length and the specialism before treating either as comparable.

ADEK, the permit, and who may lawfully take the work

  • ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain private schools
  • ADEK ethics rules bar paid tutoring of students at the teacher's own school
  • The MoHRE permit comes from Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is free for two years
  • A training institute with premises needs a separate KHDA permit, which IB Gram does not hold

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain private schools are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK publishes inspection outcomes and runs the fee-increase approval process. None of the competitor pages measured in this research set names it, which on pages written for Abu Dhabi parents is a notable gap.

The rule that bears on a family's choice concerns school staff. Gulf News reported that ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. In a subject where a school may have exactly one Computer Science teacher, this rule removes the most obvious option entirely.

Federally, private tutoring runs on the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and open to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any amount quoted at you is unverified. MoHRE's own Private Tutor Licensing service lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

One more point because this subject attracts freelance technical help. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit as a training institute, a specific licence for a specific kind of business. IB Gram is an online tutor-matching platform holding no such permit, no regulator or board accreditation, and no premises anywhere in the UAE. A provider who describes themselves as approved by any of these bodies should be asked to produce the permit number.

09

Online delivery, and the fallback when nobody is free

  • A shared screen with remote control shows a tutor more than sitting beside a student
  • In-home and online rates overlap; what differs is who you can reach
  • DP2 spring evening slots are the scarcest hours in this subject
  • Where a matched tutor is not UAE-resident, that is stated before you commit

Of all Diploma subjects this is the one where online delivery is least a compromise. The work lives on a screen. Code is written on a screen, debugged on a screen, and documented on a screen, and a shared screen with remote control lets a tutor watch a student work, stop them at the moment the error is made, and hand control back. A tutor sitting beside a student at a desk sees less, because only one person can reach the keyboard.

On rate the delivery options overlap anyway: Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and UAE home tutors at AED 200 to AED 500 with travel included, against AED 200 to AED 450 for an online specialist. The difference is reach, and in this subject reach is the whole argument. The number of Diploma Computer Science specialists within an evening drive of Al Shamkha is close to zero. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE in any case; that is a service we run only in India.

Availability is the honest constraint and it is worth stating before a family commits. For a weekday evening slot in DP1, matching is usually possible. For a 17:00 slot in the DP2 spring, with the case study paper and the solution deadline both live, it frequently is not. The three real answers are a different time, a different tutor profile, or a wait with a date attached. A 20:00 slot or a weekend morning widens the pool substantially.

Where no UAE-resident specialist is free, a matched tutor may be based elsewhere and teaching on Gulf Standard Time, and that is disclosed before any commitment rather than hidden behind a local-looking number. Two providers ranking for UAE searches route parents to contact numbers outside the country without stating where delivery happens. In a subject this thinly supplied, a provider who tells you plainly that nobody is available this month is being more useful than one who matches you to whoever is.

Apartment towers with growing Diploma numbers. Where the nearby school does not run Computer Science, the student may be taking it as a self-taught or partially supported course, which changes a plan from supplementary to primary.

Khalifa City

Villa communities on the Al Raha and Khalifa City school corridor. A 17:30 online slot is reliable here where a drive at the same hour is not, which matters when a project session needs a full uninterrupted hour at a machine.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Short school runs and a mix of IB and British provision. Students here sometimes take Computer Science at one school while a sibling takes a different curriculum elsewhere, so session slots have to be set around two timetables.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer schools with young Diploma cohorts, where a Computer Science class of four or five is normal. No peer code to read is the specific gap, and reading well-written code is how most students learn to write it.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Long-established island schools with larger Diploma groups, though Computer Science is not universally offered even here. Families often arrive asking whether the subject is a realistic choice at all, which is a conversation worth having before DP1.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities with longer commutes and a wide curriculum spread. The chance of a Diploma Computer Science specialist living within an evening drive is low enough that online delivery is not a compromise but the only route.

Al Shamkha, Al Falah and Masdar City

Newer districts where a Computer Science student may be the only one in their year. The honest comparison here is between a specialist on screen and no specialist at all, and the rate should be read against that rather than against a Mathematics quote.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat Diploma schools

The part of the emirate where Diploma Computer Science is most likely to run, with the longest-established Group 4 provision. Ask the school two questions before DP1: whether the course runs this year, and how many students are in the group. Both answers change what outside support has to do.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas schools

Newer IB provision with small Group 4 cohorts. Where Computer Science runs here the group is often four or five students, which means almost no peer code in circulation and a teacher who may be covering two subjects. Those are the conditions that produce the heaviest outside spend.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy

Schools are named only as context for the Abu Dhabi Diploma landscape; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group, regulator or examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Say which half is failing

The written papers or the computational solution. If the answer is both, say so, and if you are not sure, send a marked paper and describe where the project stands. Those two pieces of information separate an examination-literacy problem from a process problem from a programming-fundamentals problem.

  2. 02

Send a marked paper and the project state

A returned theory paper with the marks on it, and an honest description of the computational solution: what it is meant to do, what exists, and whether any development record has been kept. A specialist can read the diagnosis off those two things in a few minutes.

  3. 03

Take the first session at no charge

One full session online, no payment and no card held. It should end with a written view: which half is costing marks, whether the project scope is finishable, how many sessions each repair takes, and what the tutor will and will not do with the solution. All four should be in writing.

  4. 04

Buy the small high-value things first

Scope negotiation, if the project is still open, because it expires. A development record routine, because it cannot be backdated honestly. Then examination literacy, which is four to six sessions and shows in the next marked paper. Programming fundamentals last, because it is the longest and least urgent of the three.

  5. 05

Review on marked work, not on the artefact

Compare theory marks against where they started and the project against the published criteria rather than against whether it runs. A working artefact with no development record is a mid-band mark. If six weeks of sessions has not moved either, change the diagnosis, the mode or the tutor.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The scarcity is explained, not hidden

Few Abu Dhabi schools run this course, so few teachers have taught it, and the practical expertise has better-paid alternatives. That is why the rate sits above a Mathematics quote, and saying so is more useful to a family than a paragraph about quality.

The two halves are planned separately

A written theory paper and a built artefact fail in different ways and need different tutors' strengths. A student who codes well and scores 4s has an examination-literacy problem, and paying for more programming help is the commonest expensive mistake in this subject.

No code supplied, ever

A tutor teaches method, reviews the student's own work and explains what the criteria reward. Supplying code or writing documentation for a candidate is malpractice under IB rules, the consequence falls on the student, and in this subject code carries forensic traces of its origin.

Credentials tested on the right question

Not years of professional experience but when the tutor last taught this course, which paper their students lose marks on, and what they will do with a computational solution. An unevidenced examiner claim is treated as a reason for caution rather than a premium.

No accreditation claimed, because none is held

ADEK oversees Abu Dhabi private schools and KHDA oversees Dubai's, including the Educational Services Permit a training institute with premises requires. IB Gram holds no permit, approval, accreditation or partnership from any regulator, board, school or school group, and occupies no premises in the UAE.

Availability disclosed before you commit

In a subject this thinly supplied, being told that nobody is free this month is more useful than being matched to whoever is. Where a matched tutor is not UAE-resident, you know before the first lesson, and slots move after Iftar during Ramadan.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Why does an hour of Diploma Computer Science cost more than an hour of Maths in Abu Dhabi?+

Supply, not difficulty. Mathematics is taught in every school in the emirate by several teachers each, so the tutor pool is deep. Diploma Computer Science runs at a minority of IB schools, often with one teacher, sometimes shared with another subject. The practical expertise also has well-paid alternative employment, which raises the opportunity cost of an evening hour. Market rates for IB specialists run AED 200 to AED 450 an hour per Bestimate's 2026 table, and Computer Science sits at the upper end of that band for those reasons.

How many Abu Dhabi schools actually run Diploma Computer Science?+

A minority of the emirate's IB schools, and the picture changes year to year because a course can be withdrawn if too few students choose it. The practical advice is to ask the specific school two questions before subject choices are made: does the course run this year, and how many students are in the group. A group of four or five means almost no peer code in circulation, which is one of the main reasons families in this subject end up buying outside hours at all.

My son codes well but his theory marks are low. What does fixing that cost?+

Less than families expect, because it is the most common profile in this subject and the most mechanical repair available. The problem is examination literacy: answers that are correct and informal, pseudocode traced by instinct rather than on paper, and implementations offered where a justification was asked for. Four to six sessions rewriting answers against real mark schemes usually shows in the next marked paper. At market rates of AED 200 to AED 450 an hour that is a bounded purchase with an effect across the whole written component.

How many hours does the computational solution actually need?+

Six to ten for most students, and they are badly distributed if left to instinct. One or two on scoping the problem down to something finishable, one establishing a real user and describable requirements, one setting up a development record routine before building starts, two on design artefacts, one or two on testing as evidence rather than as confirmation, and one or two reviewing the student's own documentation against the criteria. Buy the first three early. Scope and the development record cannot be recovered later.

Which programming language should my daughter build the solution in?+

The one her school teaches, in almost every case. The marks are for the process, the design decisions and the documented evidence rather than for the language, and using something her teacher cannot support creates a supervision problem for no gain. A tutor should teach in the school's language rather than their own preference, and a tutor who insists on switching the student to a different language is prioritising their own convenience. Confirm the school's position with the teacher before any project work starts.

Does the Higher Level case study need its own sessions?+

It benefits from them, and the timing matters more than the number. The case study is released ahead of the examination on a topic the IB sets each year, and the paper assumes independent reading around a technical field the core syllabus does not treat in depth. Four to six sessions spread across the lead time is realistic: terminology secured, mechanisms explained rather than named, and the likely evaluative questions anticipated. Because the case is identical for every candidate, two students can reasonably share those sessions.

What should we ask for in the first Computer Science session?+

Four things in writing. Which half of the subject is costing marks, with the evidence from the marked paper. Whether the computational solution's scope is finishable in the time remaining, stated plainly. How many sessions each identified repair takes and why. And exactly what the tutor will and will not do with the solution. If the first session produces general encouragement rather than those four answers, you have learned something useful about the tutor rather than about your child.

Is a cheaper university-student tutor enough for this subject?+

For programming fundamentals, sometimes. A capable computing undergraduate can teach control structures, data types and collections perfectly well, and at the entry rates advertised in this market from AED 33 to AED 65 that is reasonable value for a bounded job. For the written papers and for solution supervision it is usually not enough, because both require knowing what the examiners reward rather than knowing the subject. A student who codes well and scores 4s will not be helped by someone who codes better.

Our Abu Dhabi school does not offer Diploma Computer Science. What now?+

Three realistic options and one that is usually wrong. Moving school for one subject is rarely the right decision. Taking a different Group 4 subject and reading computing at university is very common and closes fewer doors than families fear, since most computing degrees do not require school-level Computer Science. Taking the course with heavy outside support works only if the school will enter the candidate and supervise the solution, since the internal assessment needs a supervising teacher and an authenticity record. Digital Society is a genuine alternative subject rather than an easier version.

Do you come to our home in Khalifa City for Computer Science lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. All Abu Dhabi lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and in this subject that is the better format rather than a compromise. A shared screen with remote control lets a tutor watch a student work, stop them at the point the error is made and hand control back. At a desk only one person can reach the keyboard.

What is a tutor allowed to do with my child's computational solution?+

Teach method, review the student's own work and explain what the published criteria reward. That means negotiating the scope, testing whether the user requirements are real, teaching what a development record should contain, explaining what counts as testing as evidence, and commenting on documentation the student has written. What a tutor may not do is supply code, debug by rewriting, or produce documentation on the student's behalf. That is malpractice under IB rules, the consequence falls on the candidate, and code carries traces of its origin.

Is the permit position different for an online Computer Science tutor?+

The permit requirement attaches to the individual providing private tuition in the UAE rather than to the format. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without it carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule. Ask any provider about the matched tutor specifically, not about the company.

What should we budget for two Diploma years of Computer Science in Abu Dhabi?+

It depends heavily on whether the school teaches the course properly or barely at all. As a supplementary plan, the realistic shape is three blocks rather than a continuous weekly hour: solution supervision, examination literacy, and for Higher Level the case study. Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour runs AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the mid market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. As a primary teaching plan, where the school cannot teach it, expect a weekly commitment across two years at the specialist band.

Will a Diploma Computer Science grade matter for a UAE computing place?+

Requirements are set by individual faculties rather than by one rule, and many computing programmes in the UAE and elsewhere do not require school-level Computer Science at all, asking instead for Mathematics at a stated level. Where the subject is listed it is usually accepted at either level. The right source is the specific programme's published entry requirements together with the school's university counsellor. Tutoring is not a requirement for admission anywhere, and a page suggesting otherwise is making a false-urgency claim about an admissions process.

Does booking one tutor for Computer Science and Mathematics reduce the total?+

Sometimes, and it depends which Mathematics course. Analysis and Approaches shares logic, functions and sequences with the computational thinking topic, and the proof habits transfer into algorithm justification, so a single tutor across both can cut total hours where the weakness is on that side. Applications and Interpretation shares descriptive statistics, which suits a data-oriented project. Ask directly which of the two the tutor has taught most recently at Diploma level, because a generalist across both subjects is not the same as a specialist in either.

Start by working out which half is failing

Diploma Computer Science is priced by a thin Abu Dhabi supply market rather than by difficulty, which means the diagnosis matters more here than in any other subject: four hours of exactly the right thing beats twelve hours of approximately the right thing. Send a marked theory paper and an honest description of where the computational solution stands. Take the first session at no charge. Expect it to tell you in writing which half is costing marks, whether the project scope is finishable, and precisely what the tutor will and will not touch.
