IB IGCSE Tutor near me in University City: Plenty of Supply, Fewer Specialists

Search for an IB IGCSE tutor near me in University City and you will find more people than almost anywhere else in Sharjah. Three universities sit inside the district, so supply is genuinely high and prices genuinely low. The harder question is whether a tutor who studied the subject can teach the paper. This page shows how to tell, and explains why IB Gram teaches University City students one-to-one over live video.

  • A test you can run on any tutor, including an undergraduate one
  • Permit eligibility for student tutors set out from the MoHRE rules

IB & IGCSE in University City

The district where supply is not the constraint

Most "tutor near me" pages exist to tell a parent that supply is scarce. In University City that would be dishonest. The district holds Sharjah's higher-education cluster — the American University of Sharjah, the University of Sharjah, Al Qasimia University, the Higher Colleges of Technology and the Sharjah Institute of Technology among them — and the result is a large resident undergraduate population within walking distance, much of it entirely capable of explaining calculus or titration to a Year 11.

That abundance is why Sharjah's budget tutoring band is real. Published rates in this market start at AED 45 to AED 65 an hour on EdFlik and AED 33 to AED 52 on Tutopiya, and in University City those numbers are not marketing. They reflect a genuine local labour supply of undergraduates teaching between lectures.

So the honest version of the question changes. It is not "is there anyone near me". It is "can the person near me teach the paper my child is actually sitting". Those are different skills, and the gap between them is not about intelligence or effort. A chemistry undergraduate knows more chemistry than the examiner needs. What they usually have not seen is a Cambridge 0620 mark scheme, or the lettered criteria an IB Diploma Internal Assessment is judged against, and those two documents are where IGCSE and Diploma marks are won.

One framing worth holding onto. A tutor cannot be judged on proximity, on years of experience or on a list of schools, because none of those is checkable from a parent's side of the conversation. A tutor can be judged on whether they have read the document that awards the marks, and that is checkable in five minutes by anyone, including a parent who never studied the subject.

This page is therefore built differently from most tutoring pages. It spends its length on how to evaluate a tutor whose strength is subject knowledge and whose gap is assessment knowledge — because in University City that is the most likely candidate you will meet, and because a well-chosen undergraduate tutor working on the right task is genuinely good value.

It also covers the permit position properly, because it applies directly here. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and its eligible applicants explicitly include university students and school students aged 15 to 18. A student tutor in University City can hold one, and since it costs nothing there is no reason not to ask.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE. In-home visits are offered only in India. University City students are taught one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time. The claim is not that we are closer. It is that for a Higher Level Diploma science or a 0606 Additional Mathematics entry, choosing on syllabus rather than on walking distance is the choice that matters.

At a glance

  • Supply here is high and genuinely cheap — the constraint is assessment knowledge
  • Subject knowledge and mark-scheme knowledge are different skills
  • University students are explicitly eligible for the free MoHRE tutor permit
  • A well-chosen undergraduate on the right task is good value; on the wrong task it is wasted
  • University City students are taught over live video, not at a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

University City's own school catchment spans both systems, and households here often hold both at once. These are the programmes behind the search, with the specific thing each one asks of a tutor beyond subject knowledge.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries an Internal Assessment marked against lettered criteria with their own descriptor bands, and the marks are added criterion by criterion rather than pooled. This is the single piece of knowledge a subject-strong tutor most often lacks, and it is the one that decides Internal Assessment grades.

UAE schools sit the May session. No IB exam or results date appears on this page because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date is worse than none — take every Diploma date from your school's IB coordinator. What is locally fixed is that Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the Diploma in UAE private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum.

IGCSEAges 14–16 · Years 10–11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Two separate qualifications that school reports blur into one word. Cambridge uses four-digit codes — 0580 Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry — with Core and Extended tiering. Pearson codes start with 4 — 4MA1, 4PH1, 4CH1 — with Foundation and Higher tiering on Mathematics Specification A. Papers, weightings and question styles all differ, and so does which past-paper archive is worth working through.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson runs International GCSE in May/June and November, and its November 2026 final timetable ran to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in January. Cambridge assigns every centre to one of six timetable zones and cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who used the wrong version.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, four criteria per subject scored 0–8 and converted to a 1–7 grade. The programme credits process, communication and reflection explicitly, which is why a capable student can sit at a 4 with correct work and a thin justification criterion. A tutor who cannot name the four criteria is teaching the subject rather than the assessment.

The step from the Middle Years Programme into the Diploma is the most common reason families in this part of Sharjah start tutoring in Year 11. The useful intervention is a short diagnostic on the specific algebra, functions and proof the Diploma mathematics courses open with, done before Year 12 rather than after the first assessment comes back.

AS/AAges 16–18 · Years 12–13

AS and A Level

The alternative post-16 route in several Sharjah schools, and often what a family is weighing the Diploma against. Three or four subjects in depth, no Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge. Subject entry usually assumes an A or B at IGCSE Extended, and the step up in mathematics and the sciences is steep because A Level assumes algebraic fluency IGCSE only samples.

Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3 — Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that five — plus one subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. A ranking competitor states six IGCSE subjects; the sourced figure is five.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, the subjects most requested in this catchment and the specific assessment behaviour each one rewards. These lines double as interview questions for any tutor, undergraduate or otherwise.

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Higher Level Paper 3 is an extended investigation, not a question set, and it is the most common reason a predicted grade falls. The exploration is marked on communication, presentation, reasoning and personal engagement, and strong mathematicians routinely lose the last of those entirely.

IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology-permitted work throughout. Frequently misread as the easier route rather than the different one. The exploration rewards genuine collected data, which is a decision made in the first week and not fixable later.

IB Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the grade, with marks for state symbols, conditions and the reasoning between steps. The Internal Assessment credits the student's own research question and method design, and a tidy textbook result earns nothing by itself.

IB Physics

HL and SL

Higher Level adds depth on shared topics and that extra material separates candidates. Extended responses reward stating the physical principle before the calculation. The Internal Assessment credits design and uncertainty handling rather than getting the accepted value.

IB Biology

HL and SL

Command terms do the damage: outline, describe, explain, distinguish and discuss expect different structures and mark counts. A student answering all of them the same way settles near a 5 regardless of content knowledge. Data questions on unfamiliar experiments are trainable and rarely trained.

IGCSE Mathematics — 0580 / 4MA1

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Extended Paper 4 decides most grades through structured multi-mark questions, and unshown method on a four-mark item typically scores one. Pearson splits the marks evenly across two papers, which makes pacing errors unrecoverable.

IGCSE Physics — 0625 / 4PH1

Core and Extended

Electricity and electromagnetism take most of the lost marks, usually when a potential divider is read as a plain series circuit. Which practical route the centre uses — timetabled practical or alternative-to-practical — changes half the revision plan.

IGCSE Chemistry — 0620 / 4CH1

Core and Extended

Mole arithmetic and organic pathways carry the grade. Units dropped mid-titration cost marks, and a product named without its functional group scores nothing. Cambridge examines qualitative analysis tables in detail and they are the cheapest marks on the paper.

IGCSE Additional Mathematics — 0606

Extended only

Calculus, logarithms and trigonometric identities 0580 never reaches. Reading it as harder 0580 revision is the standard error. Students who do well have drilled differentiation and the factor theorem deliberately, and the tutor pool for it is thin everywhere.

IGCSE Computer Science — 0478 / 4CP0

Extended

Pseudocode is marked against the syllabus's own conventions rather than Python, which costs marks on every trace table — a trap an undergraduate programmer walks into faster than anyone. Theory on data representation and networks is learnable and chronically under-revised.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

First language and additional language routes

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools. Separate streams exist for Arab and non-Arab students because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ, so material does not transfer between them.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to use what is actually available here. All are delivered over live video for UAE students, and the third is the one most University City families overlook.

Specialist weekly slot

One tutor matched to the exact code and level, one fixed hour a week. This is what the market's AED 150 to AED 300 online band is pricing, and what you are buying is assessment knowledge rather than subject knowledge. Suited to a student whose loss is diagnosable from a marked paper.

  • Matched to 0580 Extended, 4PH1 or Diploma Chemistry Higher Level specifically
  • Mark scheme or criterion descriptors open in the session
  • Slot held weekly in Gulf Standard Time
  • Short written note naming the next step

Split arrangement

Content catch-up from the local or budget end of the market, assessment technique from a specialist. Several families in this catchment already do this by accident; doing it deliberately is often the best value available, because each tutor is being asked for what they actually have.

  • Budget tutor re-teaches missed material
  • Specialist works on mark schemes, criteria and command terms
  • One shared error log so the two do not duplicate
  • Reviewed together against school marks

Core components and coursework block

Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Internal Assessment feedback cycles, structured against published criteria. This is the hardest thing to buy locally and the place where an inexperienced tutor is most likely to cross a line. Nothing is written for the student at any stage.

  • Criterion descriptors read with the student before drafting
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Timed to the school supervisor's internal deadlines
  • Ends at submission

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in University City

01

Why the cheapest tutor in Sharjah lives here

Rate bands in a market are set by supply, and University City has an unusual amount of it. Several thousand undergraduates live inside or immediately around the district, a good number of them in subjects that map directly onto IGCSE and Diploma content, and many of them want a few paid hours a week that do not require a car.

That is why published budget rates in this market are not fiction. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52, and in this district those figures are achievable in person. Compare the AED 150 to AED 300 band that a qualified subject tutor commands online, or the AED 180 to AED 500 range for in-home visits where Bestimate's Dubai table puts the typical case at AED 180 to AED 350.

A parent should take the saving seriously rather than dismiss it. For a student who missed three weeks of mechanics through illness, or who needs someone to sit alongside them while they work through a problem set, a capable undergraduate at AED 60 an hour is excellent value and probably better value than a specialist at four times the price.

The mistake is assuming the saving scales to every task. It does not, and the reason is specific rather than snobbish. Mark schemes and criterion descriptors are professional documents that undergraduates have no reason to have read. A tutor who has never seen how a Cambridge six-mark item is credited, or how an Internal Assessment's evaluation criterion is banded, cannot diagnose a loss in those places however well they know the content.

So the question to carry into this district is not whether to pay less. It is which of your child's problems is a content problem and which is an assessment problem, because the first is cheap here and the second is not.

A test that works on a nineteen-year-old tutor

  • Ask what the mark scheme credits that a student would not guess
  • For the Diploma, ask them to name the criteria by letter
  • Hand over a marked paper and ask for a named behaviour, not a sentiment
  • Ask what they will refuse to do with coursework
  • Hire for content at content prices; hire for assessment only where assessment is the problem

Asking an undergraduate about their experience is useless, because the honest answer is that they have little and it does not follow that they will be bad. Ask about the documents instead. These four questions take five minutes and they work on anyone.

First: have you read the mark scheme for this paper, and what does it credit that a student would not guess? A good answer names something concrete — method marks awarded independently of the final answer, a specific vocabulary requirement in a science extended response, the structure of a six-mark item. Second, for a Diploma student: name the criteria for this Internal Assessment and say what each one rewards. Those descriptors are lettered and published, and someone who has taught the course can list them.

Third: here is a marked paper, what went wrong? Not "they need more practice" — the useful answer is a named behaviour. The student writes answers without working on any question worth three or more marks. The student describes where the question asked them to explain. The student labels no axes on economics diagrams. That is a diagnosis, and it tells you what the next four sessions will do.

Fourth: what will you refuse to do with my child's coursework? A tutor who has thought about the boundary answers immediately. One who has not will hesitate, and that hesitation matters more with an inexperienced tutor than with an experienced one, because an undergraduate under pressure to be helpful is exactly the person most likely to rewrite a paragraph themselves.

A candidate who answers the first three well and the fourth cleanly is worth hiring at any age. One who cannot answer the first two can still be useful for content, at content prices, on content tasks.

03

The permit rules that apply directly in this district

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and the rules are unusually relevant in University City because they explicitly cover student tutors. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years.

The eligible categories are set out in the official guidance and include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. So a University of Sharjah undergraduate tutoring a Year 11 is within a recognised category, provided they hold the permit.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts is published, so a figure quoted to you as the penalty is unverified and should be treated as such. The application route is MoHRE's own service for private tutor licensing, through the smart app, website and e-services system.

Because the permit is free, the question is easy to ask and the answer is informative. A tutor who holds it has done a two-day administrative process at no cost. A tutor who has not either did not know or decided not to, and both are worth knowing before they teach your child weekly in your home.

One related rule, press-reported rather than taken from the policy document itself: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE code of conduct carries a similar bar. Verify against the current policy before relying on the exact wording, but the principle is clear enough — a teacher tutoring their own student is not a shortcut to take.

IB and IGCSE ask for two different skills

A household in this catchment often has one child on each system, and parents reasonably assume a good tutor covers both. Sometimes true, but the two qualifications test different things and reward different training, and a tutor strong in one can be mediocre in the other without anybody noticing for a term.

IGCSE is terminal and paper-based. Grades come from written papers sat under time, and marks are won by precision: method shown, units carried, mark-scheme vocabulary used, the command term answered as asked. Training for it is mechanical in a good way — marked papers, an error log, targeted repetition of the behaviour that keeps costing marks.

The Diploma puts a substantial share of the grade in the student's own extended work and marks it against lettered criteria added separately. Training for it is editorial: reading descriptors, questioning an argument, pushing a student to evaluate rather than describe. The failure modes are structural rather than careless — an empty evaluation criterion, a research question too broad to answer, a commentary built on an article with no economics in it.

The practical consequence for a University City family is to stop looking for one tutor for both children. Ask instead which document each tutor has worked from. A tutor who talks fluently about mark schemes is probably your IGCSE answer. A tutor who talks about criteria and command terms is probably your Diploma answer. Someone who talks about neither is a content tutor, which is a real and useful thing at a lower price.

The transition between the two systems is its own job again. A student arriving in Diploma Year 1 from a strong IGCSE record frequently drops two grades in a term, and the cause is almost always that speed and accuracy stop being the skill being measured.

Coursework: the line an inexperienced tutor most often crosses

  • Explaining criteria and critiquing the student's own draft: legitimate
  • Writing or redrafting text that will be submitted: never
  • Supplying model answers to work from: never
  • Ask for comments rather than in-document edits
  • Board materials cited and worked through, not redistributed

This section is here specifically because of who tutors in this district. An undergraduate wants to help, is good at writing, is being paid by a parent who wants results, and is sitting next to a student with a deadline. That is the exact set of pressures under which a sentence gets rewritten for the student rather than discussed with them.

The rule is not a matter of style. IB academic-honesty rules treat submitted work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice, and a malpractice finding affects the candidate's diploma. The tutor carries no consequence at all. Neither does the operator in this market that sells completed Internal Assessments outright at a published price.

So the boundary needs stating before the first session, in words a nineteen-year-old can apply under deadline pressure. A tutor may explain the criteria, question the argument, point at a weak paragraph and say why it is weak, and teach the skill the task needs. A tutor may not write a sentence that will be submitted, redraft to completion, or supply model text to work from.

The same applies to materials. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are their copyright and are available free through the school. Working through them together with the source cited is the legitimate version; a shared drive of them is not.

A practical safeguard: ask that feedback be given verbally or as comments rather than as edits in the document. It is a small procedural change and it removes the ambiguity entirely, for the student's protection as much as anyone's.

06

When a session fits around a University City evening

Scheduling kills more tutoring arrangements than teaching quality does. A slot that does not survive the real school day gets moved, then moved again, and then the arrangement quietly ends with the family concluding tutoring does not work.

This district's constraint is the Muwaileh and Maliha Road dismissal window, where several large campuses release into the same roads within a narrow period. A household twenty minutes away by map is thirty-five minutes away at 2.45pm, and with a sibling at a second school it is rarely settled before 4.30pm. That makes a 4pm session fiction and 5pm the earliest honest option for a single-child household.

University schedules add a wrinkle unique to this area. An undergraduate tutor's availability moves with their own timetable and collapses entirely during their exam weeks, which do not align with school exam weeks. A family that has built its revision plan around a local student tutor can lose that tutor precisely in the month before the school mocks.

Live-video sessions remove the travel variable and make the slot a fixed commitment rather than a negotiation, which is most of what families want from them. The slot is booked in Gulf Standard Time and held weekly, including the later windows for students commuting back from Dubai schools.

Ramadan is planned around rather than through. Study patterns shift and evenings run later, so lighter sessions during the month and the intensive work either side of it is the arrangement that survives, and most families here move to a post-Iftar time.

What a parent in this district can verify in a day

  • One email to the exams officer settles board, code, tier and timetable zone
  • Ask the tutor about the MoHRE permit; it is free, so the answer is informative
  • SPEA approves Sharjah fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods
  • Treat unevidenced examiner claims as a warning, not a credential
  • Ask anyone claiming regulator approval to show the permit number

Most claims a tutoring service makes about itself cannot be checked. A short list can, and in a district where you will be choosing between several plausible local candidates, that list is worth an afternoon.

The board, code and tier come from the school's exams officer in one email, along with the centre's own timetable. That last item matters: Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

The permit comes from asking the tutor, and the honest answer is informative either way given that it is free. The school side comes from knowing your regulator: the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate, and Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods — a wider remit than inspection alone.

Two claims cannot be checked and should be read as warnings. Examiner status should not be asserted for an individual whose current position cannot be shown, and should never be used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content. Regulator approval is the other: a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, and a claim of regulator endorsement over a platform's tutors is the most misleading thing available in this market.

For the avoidance of doubt about us: IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed by or partnered with SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and holds no educational services permit. Naming a regulator on this page describes the system a Sharjah student studies inside.

08

Getting started, and what the thin spots are

  • Marked work first, report card second
  • Judge the free trial on a named behaviour, not on rapport
  • Content help is plentiful here; assessment specialism is not
  • Thin specialisms get a wait or a different slot, never a substitute
  • Agree the six-week review before the first invoice

Begin with the last marked piece of work rather than the report card. A grade says something is wrong; marked work shows which marks went and why, and it is the only basis on which any tutor can say something useful before being paid.

Then the free trial over live video, at a time that survives the dismissal window — usually six o'clock or later for a household with children at two schools. Judge it on whether the tutor named a specific behaviour and said what the next four sessions would address. Vagueness here becomes billed hours later.

Coverage is not uniform and should be stated rather than concealed. Content help is abundant in this district. Assessment technique at IGCSE Extended is moderately available. Diploma Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Economics evaluation coaching, Theory of Knowledge support, Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 pseudocode and Accounting 0452 are all thin pools, locally and generally.

When the match is not available, the honest options are a different slot with the right specialist, that specialist over live video from another time zone, or a plain statement that it is not available this term. A general science tutor in front of a Higher Level Chemistry candidate is not a match whatever label is put on it.

Finally, agree the review point before the first paid session. Six weeks later, read the next marked piece for the loss you started with. If it has moved, continue. If it has not, change the plan or the tutor — a mismatch is common and says nothing about either party.

Where we tutor

University City and the districts it draws from

University City is a campus district with residential neighbourhoods wrapped around it. These are the areas whose school-age children and whose tutor supply overlap here.

University City

Sharjah's higher-education cluster, with several universities and institutes inside one perimeter. The density of students is what makes local tutoring supply high and local rates low, and it is also why credential questions matter here more than elsewhere.

Muwaileh

Immediately south, with several large school campuses along the Maliha Road corridor. Dismissal congestion there is sharp and narrow, so a 4pm session start rarely holds for a household with children at those schools.

Al Zahia

Villa and townhouse housing west of Muwaileh. Families here often recruit tutors from University City because it is close, which makes the subject-versus-assessment distinction on this page especially practical.

Aljada

Master-planned, south of Muwaileh and still filling, with schools opening in stages. New households are frequently asking the credentialling questions for the first time and have no local network to ask.

Al Qasimia

Central Sharjah, closer to the older British and Indian curriculum schools. A different board mix, and a reminder that two catchments ten minutes apart can be entering different exam boards.

Sharjah Garden City

Further inland towards Al Dhaid. Too far for most University City tutors to travel for a single hour, which is the clearest local argument for choosing a tutor by syllabus rather than by map.

Al Taawun and Al Majaz

The lagoon districts, with many children attending Dubai schools and returning late through Al Mamzar. Their session windows run later than the inland districts', and the two sets compete for the same evening slots.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the last marked piece of work

A marked paper, a mock, or an Internal Assessment draft with comments, plus the subject and level or code. That document is what lets a tutor name a behaviour rather than a sentiment, and it is the difference between a diagnosis and a sales call.

Get the four facts from the school

Board, syllabus code, tier and — for science — the practical route, plus the centre's own exam timetable. One email to the exams officer, usually answered inside a day, and it decides which past-paper archive and which tutor are relevant.

  3. 03

    Run the four-question test

What does the mark scheme credit that a student would not guess? Name the criteria for this Internal Assessment. Here is a marked paper, what went wrong? What will you refuse to do with coursework? Ask the permit question in the same conversation.

  4. 04

Take the free trial over live video

One session, no payment, at a time that holds up after the Maliha Road dismissal window. Judge it on whether the tutor named the specific loss and said what the next four sessions would cover, not on whether your child enjoyed the hour.

  5. 05

Split the work if that is cheaper

Content catch-up locally at content prices, assessment technique with a specialist, one shared error log so the two do not duplicate. Many families in this district do this accidentally. Doing it deliberately usually costs less and works better.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The local option is taken seriously here

A capable undergraduate at AED 60 an hour is good value for a content gap, and this page says so. What it also says is where that help runs out — mark schemes and criterion descriptors — so a parent can buy each thing from whoever actually has it.

Matched to code and level

Cambridge 0580 Extended, Pearson 4PH1 and Diploma Chemistry Higher Level are three different jobs. A tutor is matched to the paper your child sits, which is why the first question is which board and code the school enters.

The permit question is put in writing

The MoHRE private tuition permit is free, valid two years, and explicitly open to university students. Any parent in this district can ask about it in one sentence, and this page sets out the categories so the answer can be judged.

Delivery stated plainly

University City students are taught one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Sharjah or anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is an India-only service. That belongs on the page, not in a call after booking.

Coverage limits disclosed

The thin spots are named: Higher Level Diploma sciences, Maths AA HL, Theory of Knowledge, Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 pseudocode, Accounting 0452. No competitor in the researched set discloses a coverage limit at all.

No claims you cannot check

No regulator approval, no unevidenced examiner status, no star ratings, no guaranteed grades, no satisfaction percentages. Every AED figure carries the source it came from and the month it was read, and the IB dates that could not be verified are not published.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in University City: your questions answered

Are there really more tutors available in University City than elsewhere in Sharjah?+

Yes, and it is not a marketing claim. The district holds Sharjah's higher-education cluster, including the American University of Sharjah, the University of Sharjah, Al Qasimia University, the Higher Colleges of Technology and the Sharjah Institute of Technology, so several thousand undergraduates live within walking distance of each other. That supply is why published budget rates of AED 33 to AED 150 an hour are achievable here in person. The constraint is not availability. It is whether a given tutor has read the mark scheme for your child's paper.

Can a university student actually tutor my child for IGCSE or the IB?+

Legally yes, and often usefully. The MoHRE private tuition work permit explicitly lists university students among its eligible applicants, alongside school and government-sector teachers, private-sector employees, unemployed individuals and school students aged 15 to 18. It is granted free of charge for two years. Practically, an undergraduate is usually strong on content and weak on assessment documents, so the arrangement works best for re-teaching missed material rather than for mark-scheme or criterion technique.

Is it worth paying four times more for a specialist when a student tutor is nearby?+

It depends entirely on which problem you have. If your child missed three weeks of mechanics, a capable undergraduate at AED 60 an hour is excellent value and a specialist at AED 270 is an overpayment. If your child knows the content and keeps losing method marks because working is not shown, no amount of cheap content teaching will move it. Diagnose first from a marked paper, then buy the matching thing. Many families here sensibly buy both for different tasks.

Does IB Gram send tutors to homes in University City?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Sharjah or anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. University City students are taught one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. Given that this is the one district in Sharjah where local supply is genuinely abundant, the honest case for online is narrow and specific: it is how you reach a Higher Level Diploma science or Additional Mathematics 0606 specialist that nobody nearby teaches.

What exactly should I ask a tutor who has never taught professionally?+

Four things, and none of them about experience. What does the mark scheme for this paper credit that a student would not guess? For a Diploma student, name the criteria for this Internal Assessment and say what each rewards. Here is a marked paper — what went wrong, in terms of a behaviour rather than a feeling? And what will you refuse to do with my child's coursework? Good answers to the first three plus a clean answer to the fourth is a hire worth making at any age.

Why would a tutor who knows the subject still not help my child's grade?+

Because marks are awarded by a document the tutor may never have read. Mark schemes credit method independently of the answer, require specific vocabulary in science extended responses, and structure six-mark items in a particular way. IB Internal Assessments are marked criterion by criterion, each lettered and added separately, so a mathematically perfect exploration with no personal engagement loses those marks outright. Subject knowledge cannot diagnose a loss in a place the tutor has never looked.

Will a student tutor still be available during my child's mock exams?+

Often not, and this catches families here specifically. An undergraduate's availability follows their own university timetable, and their exam weeks do not align with school ones — which means a tutor recruited in October can disappear in the month before the school mocks or before the June series. If you are building a revision plan around a local student tutor, ask for their exam dates at the start and plan the cover, or hold a specialist slot in parallel.

My child has one sibling on IGCSE and one on the Diploma. Can one tutor do both?+

Sometimes, but it is worth testing rather than assuming. The two systems reward different training: IGCSE is terminal and paper-based, so the work is marked papers, an error log and targeted repetition. The Diploma puts a large share of the grade in criterion-marked internal work, so the work is editorial — reading descriptors, questioning arguments, pushing a student from describing to evaluating. Ask each tutor which document they work from. The answer sorts them quickly.

How late can a session start for a household near University City?+

Six o'clock works for most, and 5pm only where there is a single child at a nearby school. Dismissal congestion along the Maliha Road corridor is sharp because several large campuses release into the same roads in a narrow window, and a household with children at two schools is rarely settled before 4.30pm. Students commuting back from Dubai schools are looking at 7.30pm. Slots are booked in Gulf Standard Time and held weekly, with a post-Iftar time during Ramadan.

How do I make sure a tutor does not end up writing part of my child's coursework?+

Set the rule in words before the first session and ask for a procedural safeguard: feedback as spoken comments or margin notes, never as edits inside the document. A tutor may explain criteria, question an argument, point at a weak paragraph and teach the underlying skill. A tutor may not write submitted text, redraft to completion or supply model answers. IB rules treat work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice, and the consequence lands on the student.

What does SPEA regulate, and does it cover private tutors?+

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate, and its remit is broader than inspection — Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. It does not license individual tutors; that sits with the MoHRE private tuition work permit. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or Cambridge, and naming them here describes the system rather than implying endorsement.

Which subjects will I struggle to find locally even in this district?+

Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 marked against the syllabus's own pseudocode conventions rather than Python, and Accounting 0452 on the IGCSE side. On the Diploma side, Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Economics with proper diagram and evaluation coaching, and Theory of Knowledge support. International Baccalaureate students were 7 per cent of Dubai's private-school population in 2024-25 against 37 per cent on UK curricula, which is why DP specialists are thin regionally.

Which Cambridge exam timetable should we be working from?+

The one your school's exams officer issues, and only that one. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong version. A tutor quoting dates from a generic download may be working from a document that does not apply to your child's centre. UAE candidates sit the June and November series; February/March is India-only.

How will I know in six weeks whether I chose the right tutor?+

By reading marked work for the loss you named at the start. Get the failure mode in writing before the block begins — working not shown on multi-mark questions, an evaluation criterion left empty, command terms answered identically, diagrams unlabelled. Six weeks later, look at the next marked paper or assessment for that same loss specifically. If it has shifted, continue. If not, change the plan or the tutor; a mismatch is common and says nothing about either side.

Use the supply, but test for the right thing

University City is the one part of Sharjah where a parent searching for an IB IGCSE tutor near me has real choice, and that choice is worth using. Get the board, code and tier from your school, send the last marked paper, and run the four questions on this page against every candidate including ours. Where the problem is content, hire locally and pay content prices. Where it is mark schemes or criteria, take a free trial over live video and judge it on whether the diagnosis is specific.
