IB Home Tutor in University City

Most searches for an IB home tutor in University City are really searches for a workable time of day. This page starts with the Sharjah school run: when buses reach the campus belt, how long the Diploma week already is, and which evening slot a DP1 or DP2 student can hold for a full term without collapsing. Lessons from IB Gram run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so nobody is driving through University City at 5pm.

IB & IGCSE in University City

The school run decides the tutoring, not the other way round

University City sits on the eastern edge of Sharjah, built around the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah, with Muwaileh immediately to the west and Al Zahia and Aljada to the north and south. Households here are a particular mix: university staff, postgraduate families, and long-settled Sharjah residents whose children are bussed out to schools in Muwaileh, Al Qulayaa, Al Ramtha and across the Dubai boundary. The common thread is that nobody's child finishes the day where they live.

That single fact is why the question of time of day comes before the question of tutor. A Sharjah secondary school day typically finishes between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, but a child who is bussed back into University City arrives considerably later, and a child attending a Dubai school on the other side of the Al Ittihad Road corridor can arrive after 4.30pm. A 4pm tutoring slot that looks sensible on a calendar is, for many families here, a slot that will be missed or cut short most weeks.

Diploma students have a second constraint the school run hides. A DP student is carrying six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, and in a Sharjah school the timetable also includes Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies, which the federal framework requires private schools to teach alongside their licensed international curriculum. The week is already full before anybody adds an hour of tutoring to it.

So the honest shape of IB support in University City is one protected hour a week, in a slot the household can defend, with a tutor who can use the hour on what the student is actually losing marks for. Lessons from IB Gram are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service offered only in India. The practical gain for a University City family is that the hour starts when it is meant to and nothing is lost to University City Road. That phrasing is deliberate: an IB home tutor in University City is what parents type, and the service behind the phrase is a one-to-one lesson over video rather than somebody arriving at a door. Saying so before you book is more useful than discovering it afterwards.

There is a quieter gain too. Online delivery means the tutor is chosen for the subject rather than for the drive. A DP2 student who needs somebody who has read dozens of Mathematics Explorations, or who knows what the Economics Higher Level Paper 3 quantitative questions reward, gets that person at 7.30pm on a Tuesday. Under an in-home arrangement, the list of tutors willing to reach the campus belt at that hour is short, and in a thin-supply Higher Level subject it may be empty. Online delivery also means a tutor can stay with a student through a house move inside the emirate or a summer spent abroad, which in this part of Sharjah happens often enough to matter. One more thing follows from the format, and it is the part parents notice last: the session leaves a record. An annotated past-paper script and a short written note after the hour can be re-read on the weekend, which is worth more than a verbal comment nobody can reconstruct three days later.

At a glance

  • Sharjah secondary dismissal is typically 2.30pm to 3.30pm; bus arrival into University City is later
  • 5.30pm, 7pm and 8pm are the slots that survive a full term here
  • DP students carry six subjects plus TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS
  • Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies sit in the same timetable
  • Sharjah's government sector weekend falls Friday to Sunday, which frees Friday mornings for some households
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

University City families use all three IB programmes, usually across siblings rather than in sequence. What follows is each programme as a weekly time commitment, because that is the version a parent can plan around.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and CAS. Points run from 24 for an awarded diploma to a maximum of 45, with up to three bonus points available from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix. Internal Assessments carry 20% of the grade in the sciences and Mathematics and up to 30% in Economics at Standard Level.

In University City the DP pinch point is the first term of DP2, when two Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay final draft and the first full mocks arrive within a few weeks. Families who book one weekly hour from the start of DP1 are mostly protecting that term. The slot matters as much as the subject: a DP2 student with a 4pm session will miss it during mock weeks, while a 7.30pm session survives the whole year.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against criteria A to D rather than as percentages, with the Personal Project in MYP 5. Students exit into the Diploma or into an IGCSE pathway, and the step into timed external papers is the point at which criterion-based study habits need rebuilding.

MYP students here finish school earlier than Diploma students and have a genuine 4.30pm or 5pm slot available, which is worth using while it exists. An hour a fortnight aimed at writing to a command term and at reading the criterion wording costs little and removes the most common DP1 problem: a capable student who has never written to a mark scheme.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS to Year 6

IB Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry with no external examinations, assessed through portfolios and the Year 6 exhibition. Support at this stage is about reading fluency, number sense and the habit of explaining thinking out loud, not about examination technique.

For a primary child in University City the useful session is short and early: 30 to 40 minutes at around 4.30pm, before fatigue sets in, usually in English reading or number work. Parents of this age group are also the ones for whom an in-person arrangement can genuinely be better, and it is fair to say so even though IB Gram's UAE delivery is online.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects University City households ask about most, with the assessment structure and the place where the hour is best spent. Session length is 60 minutes unless a subject's paper practice needs longer, which the tutor will say rather than assume.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level is Papers 1 and 2 at 40% each with the Exploration at 20%; Higher Level is 30%, 30%, Paper 3 at 20% and the Exploration at 20%. The recurring loss is unjustified reasoning in proof questions and arithmetic slips on the calculator paper, both of which respond to weekly timed practice.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Same weightings, different emphasis: statistics, modelling and technology use. Students who can calculate correctly still lose marks by failing to interpret the result in the context the question set, which is a writing habit rather than a mathematical one.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 is 36%, Paper 2 is 44% and the Internal Assessment 20%. The extended-response questions reward explanation with a chain of reasoning; a correct formula with no explanation scores a fraction of the marks available.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Weighted 36% Paper 1, 44% Paper 2, 20% Internal Assessment. Organic mechanisms, equilibrium and the quantitative work early in the course are where Diploma students in Sharjah most often need the foundation rebuilt rather than revised.

Biology

HL and SL

Also 36 / 44 / 20. Command terms decide long-answer marks: outline, explain and evaluate each want a different structure, and a well-learned paragraph aimed at the wrong verb earns almost nothing.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level is Paper 1 at 30%, Paper 2 at 40% and the Internal Assessment at 30%; Higher Level adds Paper 3 and moves to 20 / 30 / 30 / 20. The Internal Assessment is three commentaries on published articles, marked on diagram accuracy and on applying one key concept properly.

Business Management

HL and SL

Paper 1 at 35%, Paper 2 at 40%, Internal Assessment at 25%. Case-study answers that describe a tool score below shorter answers that use it to reach a supported judgement, which is the single most teachable habit in the subject.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis, Paper 2 comparative essay and the Individual Oral, with an HL Essay added at Higher Level. Paper 1 marks are lost to paraphrase; the question asks how a text constructs meaning for an audience, not what it says.

Psychology and History

HL and SL

Both are essay subjects where structure and evidence selection carry the marks. Tutoring works on planning under time pressure and on using studies or sources as argument rather than as decoration.

Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Internal Assessment supervision

Core components

Process coaching only: framing a question, understanding the assessment criteria, planning research, referencing, and feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor reads, questions and comments. Writing or completing the work is malpractice under IB rules, and IB Gram does not do it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements work around a University City school run. The difference between them is not teaching quality but how much of the week they ask a tired student to give up, which is the variable that decides whether a plan survives to the end of term.

One protected hour a week, same slot

A single subject with the same tutor at the same hour every week, booked in Gulf Standard Time after the school run has landed. This is the arrangement that holds through mock weeks and Ramadan, because the household has built the evening around it rather than fitting it in. Material is the student's own: school notes, marked work and past papers on screen.

  • Slot chosen from arrival time, not dismissal time
  • Same tutor each week, so no restart cost
  • Written feedback after sessions involving a marked paper
  • Reviewed every four to six weeks against marked work

Two shorter sessions for a Diploma student under pressure

Two 45-minute sessions rather than one long one, used in DP2 when concentration after a full school day is the limiting factor. It covers the same ground with less fatigue, and it gives a student two chances a week to bring a problem rather than one.

  • Useful when two Internal Assessments overlap
  • Easier to place either side of a CAS commitment
  • Short enough to hold after a late bus
  • Can collapse back to one session once pressure drops

Weekend morning block

A 90-minute Saturday or Friday morning session for students whose weekday evenings are genuinely gone. Sharjah's government sector weekend runs Friday to Sunday, so a household with a parent in a Sharjah government role often has Friday morning free in a way a Dubai-working household does not.

  • Long enough for a full timed paper plus review
  • No school-run or traffic exposure at all
  • Suits coursework supervision better than content teaching
  • Keeps weekday evenings free for school homework

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in University City

01

When a tutoring session can realistically start in University City

The earliest workable online start for most University City secondary students is 5.30pm, and for Diploma students 7pm is more reliable. That is a scheduling answer, not a preference. Sharjah secondary schools typically finish between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, but the gap between dismissal and a student being free to concentrate includes a bus route through Muwaileh, a meal, and in many households a sibling's pick-up as well.

The campus belt adds its own pattern. University City is a destination for tens of thousands of university students each day, and the roads that serve it, University City Road and the Maliha Road approach, carry that load alongside the school-bus traffic. A tutor driving in for a 4.30pm appointment is budgeting for that journey twice, which is one of the reasons the in-home rate in this market sits above the online one.

The table below sets out what each year group can realistically hold. It is built from how slots are actually booked rather than from an ideal timetable, and the useful instruction inside it is simple: choose the slot from your child's arrival time, not from the school's finish time. A slot chosen optimistically gets missed, and a missed slot is the most common reason a tutoring plan quietly ends in week six. There is one more variable worth building in. Families with two or three children in different year groups cannot run both sessions in the same window, and the workable pattern is usually the younger child at 5pm on one evening and the older at 7pm on another, rather than back-to-back hours on a single night. Splitting the week that way also keeps one evening completely free, which is the thing a Diploma student needs most in the first term of DP2.

The Diploma week, counted in hours before tutoring is added

Before adding an hour, it is worth counting the hours already committed. A DP student in a Sharjah school sits six subjects, three at Higher Level, which at Higher Level is 240 recommended teaching hours per subject across the two years and 150 at Standard Level. On top of that sit Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, CAS, and the Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies lessons the federal framework requires private schools to teach alongside their licensed curriculum.

The consequence is that tutoring is never added to free time. It is traded against something, and the honest conversation is about what. For most DP1 students the trade is screen time or a second CAS activity, and that is fine. For a DP2 student in the first term, the trade may be sleep, which is not fine, and the right answer is often two shorter sessions rather than one long one, or a pause during the fortnight when two Internal Assessments are due.

The table below lists the real commitments of a Diploma week so a household can see where an hour comes from. It is also the argument for starting early: an hour a week from the beginning of DP1 is cheap in time terms, while three hours a week in the last term of DP2 is taken straight out of the student's capacity to revise independently, which is the thing that actually produces marks. The same arithmetic explains why the second subject is a bigger decision than the first. Adding one hour a week is a trade a household can absorb; adding two means a student is working with a tutor on two evenings and revising on the others, and at that point the limiting resource is attention rather than money.

Why online fits a University City school run better than a visit

In-home tutoring exists in Sharjah and some families prefer it. For a household in the campus belt, three practical factors push the other way, and they are worth stating as factors rather than as sales points. The first is timing: an in-home session has to survive the tutor's journey, and a tutor coming into University City between 4pm and 7pm is crossing the same congestion the school buses are in.

The second is the tutor pool. An in-home arrangement limits you to tutors willing to drive to this district at a specific hour. For English or general maths that list exists. For Physics at Higher Level, Economics Higher Level with its Paper 3, Computer Science or a less-common Group 2 language, it may be very short, and a short list is how families end up with an approximately suitable tutor. Online removes the radius entirely, so the only constraint is the tutor's own calendar.

The third is the material. Diploma work from DP1 onwards is marked scripts, past papers and criteria, all of which read better on a shared screen with annotation than across a kitchen table, and which can be saved and re-read afterwards. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so the comparison below describes the market rather than a menu. The one fair point for the in-home format stands: a young primary child may genuinely do better with somebody in the room. From Year 10 upwards the balance tips the other way, because the work itself has become paper-based and technical. A tutor pointing at a mark scheme on a shared screen, highlighting the two words in a question that change the required answer, is doing something a kitchen table does not improve on.

Mapping the Diploma coursework calendar onto a Sharjah school year

  • Ask the Diploma coordinator for the school's internal coursework dates in writing
  • Extended Essay: 4,000 words maximum; Theory of Knowledge essay: 1,600 words
  • Mathematics Exploration is expected in the 12 to 20 page range
  • Internal Assessments carry 20% of the grade in the sciences and Mathematics, and up to 30% in Economics at Standard Level
  • Confirm IB session dates with the school or on the IB's own site, never from a tutoring page

A Diploma student's real deadlines are set by their own school, not by the examination session, and that is the calendar tutoring should follow. The school's internal dates for Internal Assessment drafts, the Extended Essay interim deadlines and the Theory of Knowledge essay sit months ahead of anything the IB publishes, and they are the dates that generate the stress in a University City household in the first term of DP2.

IB session dates are deliberately not published on this page. The IB's own site is the only source worth acting on for them, and the May session is the one UAE schools sit. Confirm every date with the school's Diploma coordinator rather than with a tutoring page. What a tutoring plan can do is work backwards from the school's internal deadlines: question framing early, methodology or source selection next, feedback on the student's own draft after that, and nothing resembling writing at any stage.

The ordering below is the one that reduces late-stage panic most reliably. It also keeps the academic-honesty boundary clean, because each step asks the student to produce something first and the tutor to respond second. Where a school's dates differ, the school's dates win, and a tutor who argues with a Diploma coordinator's calendar is a tutor to replace. The same calendar discipline helps with the Extended Essay, which fails most often on timing rather than on ability. A student who has a question agreed and a reading list started before the long summer between DP1 and DP2 writes a better essay than one who begins in September, and the tutoring hours needed drop by half.

05

What an hour of Diploma tutoring should contain

  • Student brings a specific question from the week's work
  • One technique or topic per session, chosen from marked work
  • Timed practice inside the hour, not set as homework only
  • A single clear instruction for the week ahead
  • Review against a marked paper every four to six weeks

An hour is short, and the difference between a useful hour and a pleasant one is how it is spent. A good Diploma session has a shape: ten minutes on the work since last time, with a specific question the student brings; twenty-five to thirty minutes on the topic or technique that marked work shows is weakest; fifteen minutes of timed practice on that exact thing; and a closing instruction about what to do before next week.

What that hour should not be is a re-teaching of the lesson the school taught on Monday. Sharjah schools in this belt teach the Diploma competently, and paying a second person to deliver the same content is the most common waste in the market. The gap is almost always between knowing the content and producing it under a mark scheme, in the time allowed, in the form the command term requires.

That is why marked work matters more than confidence as a review signal. Every four to six weeks, look at a marked paper and ask whether the same errors are still appearing. If they are, the plan changes: different topic order, different balance of practice to teaching, or a different tutor. Most families who review properly end up reducing hours rather than adding them, which is the outcome an honest arrangement should produce. The closing instruction is the part most often skipped and the part that makes the week between sessions useful. One sentence is enough: attempt these four questions under time, or redraft this paragraph of the Internal Assessment and bring it. A session that ends without one leaves the student waiting for the next hour instead of working in between.

06

What Diploma support costs in the Sharjah market

Take the cheapest end first, because that is where most families start. Budget online platforms publish from roughly AED 33 to AED 65 an hour: Tutopiya from about AED 33 to AED 52, EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. That tier buys supervision and company, and for a student who simply will not sit down to work it can be the right purchase. It does not reliably buy somebody who knows what a Diploma Paper 2 mark scheme rewards.

A step up, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200, TutorChase lists about AED 270, and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. In-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to AED 350 on Bestimate's figures, with independent home tutors quoted up to AED 500, the difference being travel. BartyED's AED 650 sits at the premium named-tutor end. Those figures were read in October 2026 and belong to the providers named.

Translated into a monthly plan, Bestimate's estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are roughly AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to over AED 2,000 for specialist exam-year support. Monthly packages advertised in the UAE include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. None of these is an IB Gram quote: our arrangement starts with a free trial lesson and a plan, and price follows a tutor seeing the student's work.

07

SPEA, the federal baseline and what it means for a Diploma student here

  • SPEA approves Sharjah school fees, curricula and assessment methods
  • Private schools teach Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies alongside the IB
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • A school's licensed programme offer can change, so verify it before choosing levels

Private schools in Sharjah are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate and, along with Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a broader remit than inspection alone, and it is different from Dubai, where the Knowledge and Human Development Authority oversees the quality of private education, and from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, where the Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools. In Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools.

For a University City family, two consequences are practical. A school's programme offer is approved rather than assumed, so the sensible move before choosing subject levels is to check what the school is currently licensed to run instead of relying on a prospectus from three years ago. And the federal baseline requires private schools to teach Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their licensed international curriculum, which is both a timetable fact and an often-overlooked tutoring need for a Diploma student whose Arabic is weak.

Tutors are regulated under a separate route. The private tuition work permit comes from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts is published, so none is quoted. IB Gram holds no SPEA, Ministry or examination-board approval and claims none.

08

Equivalency and what a Diploma student should check in Year 11

Families planning on a UAE university place need the Ministry of Education's equivalency of the school certificate, and it is worth reading the requirement years before it applies. For the British track the published rule is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from those five, plus proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. A competitor page ranking for UAE tutoring queries states six IGCSE subjects are needed; the sourced figure is five.

On the American track, English proficiency is shown by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics by at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. For the IB Diploma, no points threshold is published here, because that number has to be read on moe.gov.ae or confirmed with the attestation authority. Publishing an unsourced figure on a page a parent acts on would be worse than publishing nothing.

The reason this belongs on a page about school-run timing is that it is a Year 9 and Year 11 decision, not a Year 13 one. A student who checks early shapes their subject choices around the requirement at no cost. A student who checks late may need an additional entry as a private candidate, with the tutoring and the November series that implies. Equivalency is a Ministry process: IB Gram does not perform it, guarantee it or have any role in it, and tutoring is not required for it.

Where we tutor

University City and the districts that share its roads

Sessions are booked by household, not by sector, but the roads these districts share decide which slots fill first. Families from each of the areas below book the same evening hours, and the pattern is consistent enough to plan around.

University City

The campus belt holding the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. Children are bussed out to schools in several districts, so arrival home is late and the 7pm slot is the most requested of the day.

Muwaileh and Muwaileh Commercial

Immediately west, and the district most University City children are schooled in. School-bus volume on University City Road between 2.30pm and 4pm is the reason an early-afternoon session rarely holds.

Al Zahia

A newer community north of Muwaileh around City Centre Al Zahia, with a younger population. More MYP enquiries than Diploma ones, and more use of the 4.30pm and 5.30pm slots that older students cannot reach.

Aljada

Arada's district on the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road side, still adding phases. Mid-year arrivals are common here, which is when a Diploma student's subject level or Mathematics route turns out not to match the new school's offer.

Al Rahmaniya and Sharjah Garden City

Lower-density villa communities to the south on the Maliha Road and Emirates Road axis. Longer school runs, so these households book later than University City ones and use weekend mornings more.

Al Majaz and Al Taawun

Central and western Sharjah, closer to the Dubai boundary. Parents working in Dubai are often still on the road at 6pm, so an 8pm session with a parent at home is more realistic than a 5pm one.

Al Nahda, Sharjah

High-density housing on the border, with many children in Dubai schools. The afternoon return through the Al Ittihad Road corridor is the single largest constraint on session timing in the whole emirate.

Tilal City

A newer low-density community on the Emirates Road axis south-east of the city. Distance makes an in-home arrangement expensive to buy and unreliable to keep, so online is the default rather than the fallback.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in University City

The Muwaileh and University City school belt

This is where most University City children are schooled, and the licences differ sharply between neighbours: British, American and Indian curricula within a few kilometres, with programme offers that change over time. Check the current programme list on the Sharjah Private Education Authority's school information before assuming a school runs the IB Diploma.

  • Our Own English High School, Sharjah

Central Sharjah and the Dubai-border schools

A significant share of University City students travel west or across the boundary into Dubai schools, and that journey, not the curriculum, is what shapes their tutoring timetable. Families in this group should plan around arrival time rather than dismissal time.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the arrival time, not the finish time

The first useful piece of information is when your child is actually home and able to think, including the bus route and any sibling pick-up. Everything else in the plan is built from that, because a slot chosen from the school's dismissal time is a slot that gets missed by October.

  2. 02

Send the subject list with levels

Six subjects, which three are Higher Level, and the Mathematics route: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation. Add the last marked paper or school report. That is enough to match a tutor properly and it removes the diagnostic sessions you would otherwise pay for.

  3. 03

Take the free trial lesson in the real slot

Run the trial at the time you intend to keep, not at a convenient one-off hour. You are testing two things at once: whether the tutor knows where marks are lost in that paper, and whether your household can actually hold that hour every week.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and the review date

One subject, one hour, the same time each week in Gulf Standard Time, with a review date four to six weeks out written down at the start. A plan with a review date is a plan somebody will look at again, which is how hours get reduced when they are no longer needed.

  5. 05

Adjust around the school's coursework dates

When two Internal Assessment drafts fall in the same fortnight, the sensible move is often two shorter sessions, a temporary switch to coursework coaching, or a pause. Tutoring that ignores the school calendar adds pressure at exactly the wrong moment.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built around the Sharjah school run

Slots are chosen from when a child reaches home in University City, not from when the school bell rings. That single piece of realism is the difference between a plan that lasts a term and one that fades after a month of missed sessions.

The hour is the whole hour

Online delivery removes the travel that sits inside every in-home quote here and the risk that congestion on University City Road shortens a session. Nothing is lost to the journey, in either money or minutes.

Subject specialists, not a local radius

A Diploma family here gets the tutor who knows the Economics Higher Level Paper 3 pattern or the Mathematics Exploration criteria, rather than the best tutor willing to drive to the campus belt at 7pm on a weekday.

Coursework handled inside the rules

Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge support is question framing, criteria explanation and feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing is written, completed or edited to a finish, because that is malpractice and the student carries the consequence.

Figures and limits you can check

Every AED band on this page is attributed and dated, every regulatory statement comes from the authority's own wording, and no IB examination date is published here because the IB's own site is the only place to read one.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in University City: your questions answered

What time can an IB tutoring session start for a child living in University City?+

For most secondary students 5.30pm is the earliest slot that holds all term, and for Diploma students 7pm is more reliable. Sharjah secondary schools typically finish between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, but a bus route back through Muwaileh, a meal and a sibling pick-up usually consume the next two hours. Choose the slot from your child's arrival time rather than the school's dismissal time. Primary children are the exception: 4.30pm for 30 to 40 minutes works better for them, because concentration rather than traffic is the limiting factor at that age.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to a villa or apartment in University City?+

No. IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. UAE tuition is delivered one-to-one over live video, booked in Gulf Standard Time. The reason is practical rather than ideological: the tutor pool stops being limited to people willing to drive into the campus belt at 5pm, so a student who needs a Higher Level Physics or Economics specialist gets one. The search term is honest about what parents look for, and this answer is honest about what is sold.

How many hours a week does a DP1 student in Sharjah actually have spare?+

Fewer than most plans assume. A Diploma student carries six subjects with three at Higher Level, which is roughly 15 to 21 taught hours a week, plus Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay work, CAS and the Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies lessons a Sharjah private school includes alongside its licensed curriculum. One tutoring hour a week is realistic from DP1. Three hours a week is usually taken out of independent revision time, which is the activity that produces most of the marks, so adding hours can reduce the result rather than improve it.

Is one long session or two short ones better for a Diploma student after a school day?+

Two shorter sessions usually win in DP2, and one longer session is fine in DP1. The deciding factor is fatigue: a student who has been in school since 7.30am and travelled home through Muwaileh has limited concentration left, and 45 focused minutes beats 90 distracted ones. Two sessions also give the student two chances a week to bring a problem rather than one, which matters when Internal Assessment drafts are moving. The arrangement can collapse back to a single weekly hour once the pressure point has passed.

Can lessons be arranged on a Friday morning in Sharjah?+

Yes, and for some households here it is the best slot of the week. Sharjah's government sector moved to a Friday-to-Sunday weekend, so a family with a parent working in a Sharjah government role often has Friday morning genuinely free, which a Dubai-working household rarely does. A 90-minute Friday or Saturday morning block is long enough for a full timed paper plus review, carries no traffic or school-run exposure, and suits coursework supervision particularly well. It also leaves weekday evenings clear for school homework.

What should happen in the first four sessions with a new IB tutor?+

Session one works from a marked paper or report you have shared, so the tutor identifies where marks are actually lost rather than asking general questions. Sessions two and three take the weakest topic or technique and rebuild it, with timed practice inside the hour. Session four tests whether it held, using a past-paper question under time. By the end of the fourth hour you should have a written view of the student's three biggest mark losses and a plan addressing them in order. If you do not, change tutor.

Which IB subjects are hardest to find a tutor for in eastern Sharjah?+

Higher Level sciences, Economics at Higher Level because of Paper 3, Computer Science, and Group 2 languages beyond the common ones. That scarcity is the strongest practical argument for online delivery: an in-home arrangement limits you to tutors willing to drive to University City at a fixed hour, and in these subjects that list can be empty. Online, the constraint becomes the specialist's calendar instead of the map. Where no suitable tutor has availability in the slot you need, you are told plainly rather than matched to somebody approximately right.

Will the tutoring plan follow the internal deadlines a Sharjah school sets?+

By using the school's internal calendar as the plan. Ask the Diploma coordinator for the written dates for Internal Assessment drafts, Extended Essay interim deadlines and the Theory of Knowledge essay, then share them. Those dates, not the examination session, generate the pressure in the first term of DP2. A tutor then works backwards: question framing early, method or source selection next, feedback on the student's own draft after that. Where a school's date differs from a tutor's suggested schedule, the school's date wins without discussion.

What can a tutor do on an Extended Essay, and where is the line?+

A tutor can help a student narrow a researchable question, explain what the assessment criteria actually reward, suggest how to structure an argument, teach referencing, read the student's own draft and ask the questions a supervisor would ask. A tutor cannot write any part of it, cannot edit it to completion and cannot supply a model to be adapted. That line is IB academic-honesty policy, and the consequence of crossing it falls on the student: a withheld grade or a withdrawn diploma. IB Gram coaches the process and does not produce the work.

My son insists he needs somebody in the room. Is a video lesson still worth trying?+

For Diploma-level work, usually yes, because the material is marked scripts, past papers and criteria, all of which read better on a shared annotated screen than across a table, and can be saved and re-read afterwards. The honest exception is younger children, where somebody physically in the room can genuinely help. The test is cheap: take the free trial lesson in the slot you intend to keep and watch the first fifteen minutes. If the student is engaged with the tutor's annotations, the format is working.

How much does one-to-one IB Diploma tutoring cost in the Sharjah market?+

Published figures, read in October 2026, run from about AED 33 to AED 65 an hour for budget online platforms, with Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200, TutorChase about AED 270, and Bestimate puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180 to AED 350 on Bestimate's figures because travel is inside the rate. Those are the providers' own figures, not IB Gram's prices.

Is it sensible to use the same tutor for two subjects out of the six?+

Sometimes, and it reduces coordination when it works. A Mathematics specialist can often take both Analysis and Approaches and a science at Standard Level; a Physics tutor may also handle Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation. The limit is paper-specific experience at Higher Level, where the Paper 3 formats diverge sharply between subjects. Ask which specific papers and levels the tutor has taught and judge the answer rather than the claim. Two subjects also means two hours a week, so check the student's capacity before the tutor's.

What happens to sessions during Ramadan and the Sharjah exam season?+

Both are handled by moving the slot rather than stopping. During Ramadan school hours shorten and families commonly shift tutoring to a post-Iftar time, which an online arrangement can do without renegotiating anybody's journey. In mock fortnights the usual change is a temporary switch from new content to timed-paper practice, or a short pause if the student's own revision schedule is tight. Because the tutor stays the same across those changes, nothing is lost in restarting, which is the main cost of disruption in a term.

How do I tell whether the tutoring is working before the next report?+

Look at marked work rather than at mood. Every four to six weeks, read a marked paper and ask whether the same mark-scheme errors are still appearing: the same missing justification in proof, the same command-term mismatch, the same unlabelled diagram. Improvement shows as different errors, not as a happier student, although that often follows. If the same losses repeat across two marked papers, the plan changes: different topic order, more timed practice, or a different tutor. Most families who review this way end up reducing hours rather than adding them.

Pick the hour first, then the tutor

Searching for an IB home tutor in University City usually ends in a practical decision about one evening hour. Choose it from when your child is actually home and able to think, protect it, and give it to a tutor who can name the weightings and the mark losses in the subject. IB Gram delivers that hour one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no travel inside the price and no visit to a UAE address. Send the subject list with levels, the last marked paper and the arrival time, take the free trial lesson in the slot you intend to keep, and decide from what you see.
