IB DP Extended Essay Tutor in Sharjah

An IB DP Extended Essay tutor in Sharjah is usually hired for one of four reasons: a research question that will not hold, a first draft that reads like a textbook chapter, a reflection form written in a hurry, or a deadline four weeks away. This page prices each of those four jobs in dirhams, names what moves the figure in this emirate, and sets out what a paid mentor may and may not touch. Sessions run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah

What an Extended Essay actually costs a Sharjah family, and why quotes vary so much

A Sharjah parent asking about Extended Essay support is rarely asking for a term of weekly lessons. The essay is a single piece of work, roughly 40 hours of student effort, submitted once. So the honest unit of purchase is not a term - it is a stage. A topic-scoping conversation is one hour. Rescuing a research question that has already been approved and already failed is three. Reading a 4,000-word draft properly, against the criteria, and writing usable feedback on it is two to three hours of mentor time whether or not any of that time is spent in a lesson.

That is why quotes for the same essay arrive at wildly different numbers. Published market rates in the UAE run from roughly AED 45-150 an hour at the budget and university-student end, AED 150-300 for a qualified subject tutor working online, and AED 200-450 or more for an IB or IGCSE specialist. One UK-based agency publishes AED 270 an hour; one premium provider publishes AED 650. None of those figures is wrong. They are rates for different things, and most of them are quoted without saying how many hours the job takes - which is the number that decides what you actually pay.

Sharjah adds two specifics. The first is that the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and, unusually among UAE regulators, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. A Sharjah school's fee structure is therefore a reviewed figure, which makes it a useful anchor when you are deciding what a private mentoring hour is worth alongside it. The second is geography: a large share of Sharjah Diploma candidates attend campuses in Dubai, commuting from Al Nahda, Al Majaz or Al Taawun. Their supervisor is 40 minutes away in traffic, and a supervisor meeting they cannot easily reach is one of the commonest reasons a Sharjah family starts paying someone else.

The essay itself is worth understanding before you price it. Thirty-four marks are available across five criteria. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries 12 of them on its own - more than a third of the essay - and it is the criterion that cannot be fixed in the last fortnight, because it is a property of the research question rather than of the prose. Criterion A, focus and method, carries 6. Criterion B, knowledge and understanding, carries 6. Criterion D, presentation, carries 4. Criterion E, engagement, carries 6 and is assessed from the reflections rather than the essay. Confirm the current mark allocation against the Extended Essay guide your child's cohort is working to; the IB revises these documents between cohorts.

What follows is priced in dirhams at published market bands, broken down by stage, by subject family and by how late you start. Every figure is presented as a market rate from a named band, not as an IB Gram price list. Our own position is a free trial lesson first, then a quote for the specific job, which is a different conversation from an hourly sticker. Lessons are delivered online, one to one, over live video. IB Gram does not send a mentor to a home address anywhere in Sharjah - that is a service we run only in India.

At a glance

  • Criterion C alone carries 12 of the 34 marks and is decided by the research question
  • A full draft read against the criteria is two to three hours of mentor time, not one
  • Market bands: AED 45-150 budget, AED 150-300 qualified online, AED 200-450+ specialist
  • SPEA approves tuition fees and curricula in Sharjah, which anchors what an hour is worth
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years
  • A grade E in the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the whole Diploma
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Extended Essay belongs to the Diploma Programme core, but the research habit it tests is built earlier. Families in Sharjah usually meet it in one of these four places, and the support each needs is priced differently.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma carries six subjects plus three core components. The Extended Essay is the independent research piece: a 4,000-word argument in one approved subject, supervised in school, marked externally. It is graded A to E and combines with Theory of Knowledge to award up to three of the 45 Diploma points. A grade E is a failing condition, which is why a weak essay costs more than three points - it can cost the Diploma.

Sharjah's Diploma cohorts are small by Dubai standards, so a candidate writing in Psychology or Economics may be the only one in the year doing so. Supervision load falls on a teacher covering several subjects, and that is the gap private mentoring usually fills in this emirate rather than any shortage of teaching quality.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma core: Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS

The three core components run alongside the six subjects and are the part of the Diploma most often left until it is expensive. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are graded and feed the same three-point matrix; CAS is a completion requirement. Buying support for the core is cheaper per point than buying it for a subject, because three points from the core cost far fewer hours than three grade boundaries across three papers.

Sharjah schools set internal core deadlines months earlier than the IB's own submission window, and those internal dates are the ones that bind. Families who ask the coordinator for the written internal calendar in DP1 generally spend less, because the costly purchases are the ones made after a school deadline has already been missed.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP Personal Project in Year 11 is the closest thing to an Extended Essay a student meets before DP1. It demands a goal, a process journal, a product and a report, all assessed on criteria. Students who treated the Personal Project as a formality arrive in DP1 without a research habit, and the first Extended Essay deadline exposes it. Mentoring at MYP is cheap per hour and avoids the expensive rescue later.

Several Sharjah campuses run the MYP and hand students to a Diploma in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, so the Personal Project and the Extended Essay are sometimes supervised by different schools entirely. Where that happens, nobody owns the continuity, and a mentor who has seen both tasks is doing a genuinely different job.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme sets a Reflective Project rather than an Extended Essay. It is shorter, built around an ethical dilemma arising from the student's career-related study, and assessed on its own criteria. Parents who search for Extended Essay help and find themselves in a CP cohort are buying a different task: the research discipline transfers, the mark scheme does not, and a mentor who has only coached Extended Essays will misdirect the work.

The Career-related Programme is thinly represented in Sharjah, which means a CP candidate has almost no peers to compare notes with and almost no local mentoring market. This is the clearest case in the emirate for online matching on subject expertise rather than on postcode.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The essay is registered in one subject, and that choice changes both the mark profile and the hours. These are the registrations Sharjah candidates most often bring, with what each one costs in mentor time and where it leaks marks.

History

Essay registered at HL or SL

A History essay needs a question with a defensible argument and a body of secondary sources that disagree with each other. Candidates lose criterion C marks by narrating rather than evaluating. Mentor hours go on historiography and on cutting the narrative, not on finding more sources. Usually the cheapest subject family to support well.

Economics

Essay registered at HL or SL

Requires a real-world situation, a defined economic concept and diagrams that carry argument rather than decoration. The commonest failure is a question that cannot be answered with available data. Hours go on scoping and on quantitative honesty. A Sharjah-specific question - port throughput, retail rents, school fee regulation - is often stronger than a global one.

Biology

Essay registered at HL or SL

Primary data raises the cost: an experimental Biology essay needs a protocol, a risk assessment, replication and a statistical test chosen before the data is collected. Where school laboratory access is limited, a database or secondary-data essay is the honest route. Hours go on method design and on uncertainty, and that work has to happen early.

Chemistry

Essay registered at HL or SL

The hardest subject family to support late, because the chemistry has to be correct at a level above the taught course. Candidates lose marks for a question that is really a Year 11 practical in longer form. Mentor time goes on narrowing the question to something measurable and on error propagation in the results section.

Psychology

Essay registered at HL or SL

Attractive to students and risky in practice. Primary research involving human participants brings ethical requirements that most school settings cannot clear, so the workable route is a critical review of published studies. Hours go on turning a topic into a question with competing evidence, and on resisting the urge to summarise textbooks.

English A: Language and Literature

Essay registered at HL or SL

A literary or language essay needs a close-reading argument, not a theme hunt. The commonest cost is a text choice too thin to support 4,000 words. Mentor hours go on selecting the extracts the essay will actually analyse and on keeping the argument from collapsing into plot summary in the middle third.

Mathematics

Essay registered at HL or SL

Rarely chosen and often rewarded, because the field is less crowded. A Mathematics essay must contain mathematics beyond the syllabus, properly explained, with the student's own worked development rather than a transcription. Hours go on checking that the mathematics is both correct and the candidate's own, and on presentation of notation.

Business Management

Essay registered at HL or SL

Needs a forward-looking question about a real organisation and primary or secondary evidence to answer it. Candidates lose marks when the essay becomes a company profile. Mentor time goes on framing a question the available evidence can settle, which for a Sharjah-based organisation often means an interview that must be arranged weeks ahead.

World Studies

Interdisciplinary registration

An interdisciplinary essay on a global issue examined through two subjects. It can score well and it can fail badly, because the two disciplines must genuinely interact rather than sit in separate halves. The highest-supervision option on the list, and the one most often chosen for the wrong reason - that no single subject appealed.

Arabic A and Arabic B

Essay registered at HL or SL

An essay written in Arabic is assessed on the same criteria in that language, and it needs a mentor who reads the language at academic level. In Sharjah this is a thinner market than in Dubai, and it is one of the registrations where matching online rather than locally changes what is available at all.

Visual Arts

Essay registered at HL or SL

A Visual Arts essay is an art-historical or theoretical argument, not a portfolio commentary. Candidates who expect to write about their own practice are usually in the wrong component. Hours go on building a question around works the student can actually see or access reproducibly, and on referencing images correctly for criterion D.

Physics

Essay registered at HL or SL

Experimental Physics essays live or die on whether the quantity being measured can be measured to useful precision with school equipment. A simulation or data-analysis route is often stronger. Mentor time goes on uncertainty analysis, which is where most Physics essays lose both criterion B and criterion C marks at once.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy Extended Essay support, priced differently because they are different products. The stage your child is at usually decides which one is sensible rather than which one is cheapest per hour.

Stage blocks: buy the job, not the term

The most common arrangement for an essay. A block is scoped to one stage - question design, method design, draft review, reflections and viva preparation - with a fixed number of hours and a written output at the end. It suits a single submitted piece of work far better than an open-ended weekly slot, and it makes the total cost visible before you commit to it.

  • Each block names its hours and what you receive in writing
  • Draft review includes mentor reading time, which a bare hourly rate usually hides
  • Blocks can be bought out of order if a deadline has already moved
  • No block includes any writing of the essay itself

Weekly one-to-one through DP1 and DP2

A standing weekly hour from the term the essay is introduced until submission. More expensive in total than stage blocks and usually better value per mark, because criterion C is built over months rather than rescued in weeks. Families who also want subject support in the registered subject tend to choose this, since the same mentor can carry both without duplicating context.

  • Suits a candidate who has not yet settled a research question
  • Allows the reflections to be written at the points the IB intends
  • Session notes accumulate into a record of the student's own process
  • Pauses around mock weeks without losing the slot

Single diagnostic session

One hour on a finished or near-finished draft, with written feedback mapped to the five criteria and a short list of the changes worth making in the time left. The cheapest honest intervention available and the right first purchase for a family unsure whether they need anything at all. It is also the only sensible purchase inside the final fortnight before an internal deadline.

  • Written criterion-by-criterion notes the student can act on alone
  • Identifies whether the problem is the question or the prose
  • No commitment to further hours
  • Available for a draft in English or Arabic

What Extended Essay support costs in Sharjah, stage by stage

  • Hours, not hourly rate, is the number that decides what you pay
  • Stage one bought late is paid for twice
  • Draft review that excludes reading time is not draft review
  • The 500-word reflection form carries six of the 34 marks

An Extended Essay is a fixed job with a known shape, so it can be priced by stage rather than by term. The table below takes the published market bands for the UAE - roughly AED 150-300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor working online and AED 200-450 or more for a Diploma specialist - and applies them to the five stages an essay actually passes through. The hours column is the useful one. Most quotes you receive will name a rate and leave the hours to your imagination, which is how an AED 200 hour becomes an AED 2,400 essay without anybody saying so.

Read it as a ceiling rather than a plan. Very few candidates buy all five stages. A student whose question is sound and whose school supervision is attentive may need nothing beyond a single draft review. A student who arrives in DP2 with a question that cannot be answered is buying stages one and two over again, which is the single most expensive position to be in and the one most easily avoided by spending one hour early.

Two cost lines in the table are routinely left out of quotes. The first is mentor reading time: a 4,000-word draft read properly against five criteria takes longer than the lesson that follows it, and a provider who charges only for contact time is either absorbing that cost or not doing the reading. The second is the reflections. They carry six marks, they are assessed from a form of no more than 500 words, and they are almost always written in a rush the night before a deadline, which is a cheap place to lose marks and a cheap place to protect them.

Why the subject the essay is registered in changes the bill

Parents usually expect the level to drive the price. For an Extended Essay it does not - there is no Higher or Standard version of the essay. What drives the price is the registered subject, because subjects differ in how much of the work has to happen before a single word of argument is possible. A History essay needs a reading list. A Chemistry essay needs a measurable reaction, a risk assessment and equipment that exists in the school. Those are not the same purchase.

The pattern across the market is consistent. Essays built on published literature - History, Economics, English, Psychology as a critical review - are the cheapest to support properly, because the expensive early decisions are decisions about reading rather than about apparatus. Essays requiring primary data are dearer, and the cost is front-loaded: a method designed in week two is cheap, and the same method redesigned in week twelve because the first set of results was unusable is not. World Studies is the outlier, because an interdisciplinary question needs two subject perspectives to interact rather than alternate, and that integration is the part students cannot see is missing.

There is a Sharjah-specific line in this. Where a registration is uncommon in the emirate - Arabic A at academic level, Mathematics, Visual Arts theory - the local pool of people able to supervise it closely is small, and scarcity moves a quote more than subject difficulty does. That is also the clearest argument for matching on expertise rather than proximity: a candidate in Khor Fakkan registering a Mathematics essay is not choosing between a local specialist and an online one. There is no local specialist to choose.

Thirty-four marks, five criteria, and what each one costs to repair

  • Criterion C: 12 marks, set by the question, hardest to repair late
  • Criterion A: 6 marks, re-framing possible with weeks in hand
  • Criterion B: 6 marks, most responsive to targeted subject reading
  • Criterion D: 4 marks, cheapest to secure and most often conceded
  • Criterion E: 6 marks, from the reflections, not from the essay

If you are paying by the hour, it helps to know which marks the hours can still reach. The five criteria are not equally repairable late. Criterion C carries 12 marks for critical thinking and is largely decided by the research question: an essay asking a question that only has one answer cannot demonstrate evaluation however well it is written. By the time a full draft exists, criterion C is mostly fixed, and the money spent on prose polishing is buying criterion D.

Criterion A, focus and method, carries 6 marks and is also a question-level property, though a draft can still be re-framed around a sharper version of the same question if there are weeks rather than days left. Criterion B, knowledge and understanding, carries 6 and is the one most responsive to targeted reading - a student who has used the subject's own terminology loosely can be taught to use it precisely in a couple of sessions. Criterion D, presentation, carries 4 marks and is genuinely cheap to secure: consistent referencing, a contents page, correct labelling, no appendix doing the work of the body.

Criterion E, engagement, carries 6 marks and is assessed from the reflections rather than from the essay. This is the most mispriced criterion in the market. Six marks out of 34 is almost 18 per cent of the essay, and it is awarded for evidence of the student's own intellectual process - decisions taken, routes abandoned, what the setbacks taught them. A reflection written retrospectively to fill a box reads exactly like one. Dated, specific reflections written at the time cost almost nothing and are worth the same marks as a chunk of the argument.

A tutoring dirham in context: Sharjah fees, SPEA and the marginal hour

Private tutoring is bought alongside a school fee that is already being paid, so the useful question is not whether an hour is expensive in the abstract but what it buys relative to everything else on the bill. Sharjah has a specific feature here. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Fee levels in Sharjah are reviewed figures rather than free-market ones, which makes them a more stable benchmark than in markets where they are not.

For comparison on the Dubai side of the border, where many Sharjah Diploma candidates actually attend school, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That matters to a Sharjah family with a child at a Dubai campus: the school line on the household budget is flat for the year, which is the context in which a new tutoring line is being considered.

The table below sets out the comparison honestly. Note what is not in it: an IB Gram price. We publish market bands because they are checkable, and we quote for a specific job after a free trial lesson rather than from a sticker. The one figure worth more attention than the rest is the bottom row. Three core points bought through the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge generally cost fewer hours than three subject grade boundaries, which is the arithmetic most families have never had put in front of them.

The Sharjah commute is a line item on an Extended Essay

In most emirates the online-versus-in-home question is about convenience. In Sharjah it is partly about which emirate the school is in. A family in Al Nahda or Al Taawun whose child attends a Dubai campus is already absorbing a cross-border journey twice a day on Al Ittihad Road or the E311. Adding a third journey - a supervisor meeting, a tuition centre, a mentor travelling in - is not a neutral decision about preference. It is an hour of someone's day, and in an in-home rate it is an hour somebody is paying for.

That is visible in the published numbers. In-home one-to-one visits in the UAE market run roughly AED 180-500 an hour including travel, against AED 150-300 for a qualified tutor working online. The gap is not a quality gap. It is a travel gap, and it compounds: a mentor with four in-home clients across Sharjah can fit fewer sessions into an evening than one working online, so the scarce evening slots go to whoever pays most for them. For a specialist subject registration, the practical effect in Sharjah is that the slot you want does not exist locally at any price.

Online one-to-one removes the travel from both sides and changes what the pool contains. An Extended Essay registered in Arabic A, Mathematics or Visual Arts theory needs someone who reads that subject at academic level. Matching on expertise rather than on driving distance is the whole argument, and it is a stronger argument in Khor Fakkan and Kalba than anywhere else in the emirate. Lessons run over live video with screen sharing, which for a research essay means the draft, the sources and the mentor's annotations are all on one screen and all saved.

Counting backwards from submission: when an hour is worth most

  • Get the school's internal Extended Essay calendar in writing during DP1
  • Settle the research question before the summer between DP1 and DP2
  • Write each reflection at its own point, not retrospectively
  • Confirm every IB date with the coordinator or ibo.org, not with a tutoring page

The deadline that binds a Sharjah candidate is almost never the IB's. It is the internal date the school sets so that supervisors can complete their own obligations before the external submission window. Schools in this emirate set those dates differently, and families who have the written internal calendar in hand from DP1 spend less than families who learn the date when it has nearly passed. Ask the Diploma coordinator for it in writing, and ask for the three reflection points as well, because those are the moments criterion E is actually earned.

No IB session or results date is published on this page. The IB's own assessment pages block automated checking, so nothing about the May or November window here has been confirmed from the source, and an unverified date on a page like this is worse than no date. Confirm every IB deadline with your child's coordinator or on ibo.org directly. What can be said with confidence is the shape: the essay is a DP1-into-DP2 task, the question should be settled before the long summer between the two years, and the reflections are spread across the whole period rather than collected at the end.

Where the money goes furthest is early and unglamorous. One hour spent testing whether a question can actually be answered is the highest-return hour available, because it is the hour that protects 12 criterion C marks and prevents the whole of stage one being bought twice. The lowest-return hours are the ones bought in the final fortnight, which can secure criterion D and tidy criterion B but cannot change what the essay is about. If you only ever buy one hour, buy it in DP1.

What the fee never buys, however much it is

  • A mentor teaches method, asks questions and gives feedback on the student's own work
  • A mentor never supplies text, a finished question or a restructured argument
  • The authenticity declaration is signed by the candidate, not by any tutor
  • The viva voce tests whether the student can discuss their own decisions

The Extended Essay is the component where academic honesty is tested hardest, because it is the only one produced largely out of sight over many months. There is a clean line and it is worth having in writing before any money changes hands. A mentor may teach research method, explain the criteria, ask questions about an argument, point to where reasoning is thin, model referencing conventions and rehearse the concluding interview. A mentor may not produce text that appears in the essay, restructure the argument on the student's behalf, supply a research question as a finished item, or edit a draft to completion.

Some providers in this market sell the other thing. One operation found in research for these pages sells completed Internal Assessments outright. Buying that is an academic malpractice case against the student, not against the seller, and the consequence sits with the candidate. The IB's authenticity declaration is signed by the student, and the viva voce exists in part so a supervisor can satisfy themselves that the work is the student's own. A candidate who cannot discuss the decisions in their own essay has a problem no fee can solve.

School supervision has its own limits, and they are worth knowing so you can see what you are buying on top. Supervisors are permitted a defined amount of comment on one draft, and the rest of the support is conversation rather than annotation. That is by design. A paid mentor does not increase the amount of commenting a supervisor may do; what a mentor adds is time, subject depth and an outside reading. Anyone offering more than that is offering something the IB does not permit, and the person who pays for it is the student.

Permits, invoices and the questions to ask before paying anyone

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years
  • No published fine schedule exists, so no amount is quoted anywhere on this page
  • Ask whether draft reading time is inside the quoted figure
  • IB Gram claims no regulator or examination-board endorsement of any kind

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work, not unregulated work. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers working in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The official route is the service listed by MoHRE as 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', applied for through the ministry's app, website and e-services system, with no fee and a stated two-working-day completion time.

Two consequences for a Sharjah parent. A tutor who tells you the permit is expensive and that the cost is inside your rate is describing something that does not exist - the permit is free. And individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no figure is quoted here; a number circulating online could not be verified against any ministry source and should be treated with caution wherever you see it.

On invoices, ask three plain questions. Does the quoted figure include reading time for a draft, or only contact time? Is the figure per hour or per session, and how long is a session? And is the quote inclusive of any tax that applies - a question to put to the provider in writing, since the tax treatment of tuition is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority rather than for a tutoring page to assert. Separately, be careful of any offer routed through a non-UAE phone number as the only contact path, and of any claim of regulator endorsement. IB Gram holds no permit or accreditation from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, the IB or Cambridge, and says so plainly. Naming a regulator and explaining what it does is not the same as being endorsed by one.

What a grade rise is worth in points, and what it costs to buy

The Extended Essay does not produce points on its own. It combines with Theory of Knowledge in a matrix that awards up to three of the 45 Diploma points, and a grade E in either is a failing condition that can prevent the Diploma being awarded regardless of subject grades. So the value of a paid hour is not one grade letter in isolation - it is the movement in the matrix, plus the removal of a failing condition that would otherwise cost everything. Confirm the current matrix with your child's coordinator; it is published in the IB's assessment procedures and the IB revises those documents.

The arithmetic is worth seeing because it points money in an unexpected direction. Moving from a D to a C in the Extended Essay, with Theory of Knowledge steady, is usually a one-point movement and costs a handful of hours - mostly spent on criterion B and criterion D, which are the responsive ones. Moving from a C to an A is a larger job, because it requires criterion C marks, and criterion C is a question-level property. Meanwhile lifting a Higher Level subject by one grade generally means lifting performance across two or three papers. Three core points are routinely cheaper in hours than three subject points.

The one case where cost should not be the deciding factor is a candidate heading for an E. That is not a points conversation. It is a Diploma-award conversation, and it is the situation where a single diagnostic session on an existing draft is the most useful AED 150 to AED 450 a Sharjah family can spend, because it establishes quickly whether the problem is the prose, the question, or the fact that there is not yet an essay. No mentor can promise a grade, and anybody who offers one should be questioned on exactly that point.

Where we tutor

Where Sharjah Extended Essay candidates actually live, and what changes locally

Sharjah is not one market. The side of the emirate a family lives on changes which school the candidate attends, how reachable the supervisor is, and when a session can realistically start on a weekday.

Al Nahda

Pressed against the Dubai border, and the clearest example of the cross-emirate pattern: many Al Nahda students attend Dubai campuses. A supervisor meeting means a trip back across Al Ittihad Road, and that journey is why evening online sessions here start at 19:00 rather than 17:00.

Al Majaz

Dense towers around Khalid Lagoon with a short run to both Sharjah and Dubai schools. Flats rather than villas, which matters for an essay needing a quiet recorded interview or a long uninterrupted drafting block. Public library access nearby is a genuine advantage for source work.

Al Taawun

Another border community with heavy commuter flow, and a candidate population split between Sharjah and Dubai campuses. Families here often discover the internal Extended Essay deadline late, because school communication reaches them through a campus they rarely visit in person.

Muwaileh

Close to several large Sharjah campuses and to University City, so school-run distances are short and after-school slots can start earlier. Science essays benefit here: proximity to the campus makes a second laboratory session practical in a way it is not from Al Nahda.

Aljada and Al Zahia

Newer master-planned districts with young school catchments and a growing Diploma cohort. Candidates often come from campuses that have only recently started authorising Diploma cohorts, so supervisor experience with a given subject registration can be genuinely thin.

University City and Al Nouf

Adjacent to the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. Candidates here have unusually good access to academic libraries, which is a real advantage for a History, Economics or Psychology essay built on published literature rather than primary data.

Al Qasimia and Al Khan

Older central districts with a mix of Indian, British and American curriculum schools and a long-established tutoring market. Expect more local in-home offers here than elsewhere in the emirate, and therefore more price variance between quotes for the same job.

Khor Fakkan and Kalba

The east coast exclaves, under the same SPEA regulation but two hours from the main city. No realistic local mentoring market for a specialist subject registration, and the clearest case in Sharjah for online delivery rather than a search for someone nearby.

Al Suyoh and Tilal City

Outer residential growth areas with longer school runs in both directions. Session timing here is set by the return journey rather than by the student's preference, and clustering two sessions at a weekend often costs less in practice than four scattered weekday hours.

Dubai campuses that Sharjah families commute to

A large share of Sharjah Diploma candidates sit their papers at Dubai-licensed campuses regulated by KHDA rather than SPEA. That split matters for deadlines and for supervisor access, and it is the reason a Sharjah postcode tells you little about which calendar a family is actually working to.

Where Sharjah Diploma leavers commonly apply

Useful context for parents weighing what three core points are worth. Local admissions treat the Diploma total and the Higher Level grades as the primary signals; the Extended Essay grade matters mainly through the points it contributes and occasionally as evidence of research capacity.

  • University of Sharjah
  • American University of Sharjah
  • United Arab Emirates University
  • Khalifa University
  • Universities abroad entered through the Diploma total

Schools and universities are named here as context for the Sharjah education market; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with IB Gram is implied or claimed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the registration and the deadline

Two facts decide almost everything: the subject the essay is registered in, and the school's internal submission date. Send those with a short note on what exists already - a topic, a question, a draft, nothing. A Sharjah family with a child at a Dubai campus should say so, because the calendar that binds you is that school's.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with a subject-matched mentor

One session at no charge, with a mentor who reads the registered subject at academic level. The purpose is diagnostic: whether the question will hold, whether the available evidence can answer it, and which criteria are currently at risk. You get that read whether or not you continue afterwards.

  3. 03

A quote for the job, not a rate card

After the trial we quote for the stages your child actually needs, with the hours named and the written outputs listed. If the honest answer is a single diagnostic session and nothing more, that is the quote. If the honest answer is that school supervision is already covering it, we say so.

  4. 04

Work in blocks against the school's dates

Sessions are timed to the internal calendar rather than to a fixed weekly slot, which suits a single submitted piece of work. Drafts and annotations stay on a shared screen and are saved, so what the mentor wrote in week four is still readable in week fourteen when the viva comes round.

  5. 05

    Reflections and viva, then stop

The last stage is the one most families skip: writing the three reflections at their proper points, clearing presentation and referencing, and rehearsing the concluding interview. After submission there is nothing useful left to buy, and we end the engagement rather than extend it into the subject.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Prices quoted in dirhams, with the hours attached

Every figure on this page is a published market band from a named source, applied to a stated number of hours. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. A Sharjah family transacts in AED and deserves to see the total, not the rate.

Matched on the registered subject, not on your district

An Extended Essay in Arabic A, Mathematics or Visual Arts theory needs a mentor who reads that field at academic level. Online delivery means the pool is the pool of specialists rather than the pool of people who can reach Al Suyoh by 17:00, which for several registrations is the difference between support and no support.

The honesty line stated before you pay

We teach method, question arguments and give written feedback on the student's own work. We do not supply text, finished research questions or restructured arguments. One operation in this market sells completed coursework outright; the malpractice case from that lands on the candidate, and we will not put a student there.

No claim of regulator or board endorsement

IB Gram holds no permit, accreditation or partnership from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no page here implies otherwise. We explain what each regulator does because parents need to know, which is a different thing from borrowing its authority.

Sources cited, dates attached, nothing invented

Regulator positions here come from u.ae, web.khda.gov.ae and mohre.gov.ae. No IB exam or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own pages cannot be checked automatically and an unverified date would be worse than none. Where a figure could not be verified, including the fine schedule, it is left out.

A free trial before any commitment

One session at no charge with a subject-matched mentor, with no card required and no obligation to continue. For many Sharjah families the trial is the whole purchase: it establishes whether the research question holds, which is the one piece of information that changes what everything else costs.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

What should a Sharjah family budget for Extended Essay support from start to submission?+

Budget by stage rather than by term. Published UAE market rates run roughly AED 150-300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor working online and AED 200-450 or more for a Diploma specialist. The five stages of an essay - question design, method or reading plan, draft review, reflections, viva preparation - typically total seven to fourteen hours. That puts a complete stage-block route between about AED 1,050 and AED 3,600 at those bands. A standing weekly hour across both Diploma years costs considerably more and is better value per mark only if it starts early. Most families spend far less than the full range, because few need all five stages.

Is Extended Essay coaching charged by the hour or by the draft?+

Both models exist in this market and they are not equivalent. An hourly figure usually covers contact time only, which hides a real cost: reading a 4,000-word draft properly against five criteria takes two to three hours before any lesson happens. A per-draft or per-stage price includes that reading and makes the total visible before you commit. Ask any provider directly whether reading time is inside the quoted figure. If the answer is no, add it yourself when you compare quotes, otherwise you are comparing a complete price against a partial one.

Does an essay in a science cost more to support than one in History?+

Usually yes, and the reason is where the work sits rather than how hard the subject is. A Biology, Chemistry or Physics essay needs a method, replication, a risk assessment and equipment that actually exists in the school, and all of that has to be settled before writing. Those hours are front-loaded, and a method redesigned after unusable results is paid for twice. Essays built on published literature - History, English A, Economics - concentrate their hours on question design and source evaluation, which is cheaper and more forgiving of a late start.

We live in Sharjah but our son's school is in Dubai. Does that change what we pay?+

It changes the calendar more than the price. The internal submission date that binds your son is set by his Dubai campus under KHDA, not by anything in Sharjah, and families who learn that date late are the ones who end up buying emergency hours. Practically, the commute also sets your session times: an Al Nahda or Al Taawun family is usually looking at a 19:00 start rather than 17:00 once the return journey on Al Ittihad Road is accounted for. Online delivery removes a third journey from the day entirely.

Our daughter's research question has been approved but clearly will not work. How many hours is a rethink?+

One to three hours if there is still time, and it is the best-value money in the whole process. A question that only has one answer cannot earn criterion C marks, and criterion C is 12 of the 34 available. Reworking it usually means keeping the subject area and narrowing to something with competing evidence and reachable sources. If a full draft already exists and the deadline is weeks away, a partial re-frame around a sharper version of the same question is often possible. If the deadline is days away, the honest advice is to protect criteria B and D instead.

Does SPEA set or approve what a private tutor in Sharjah can charge?+

No. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods for private schools. That authority covers schools, not individual tutors. A private tutor's rate is a commercial matter between the tutor and the family. What SPEA's role does give you is a stable benchmark: school fees in Sharjah are reviewed figures rather than freely set ones, which makes them a useful comparison point when you are deciding what an extra private hour is worth alongside the fees already paid.

At what point in the two Diploma years is Extended Essay money best spent?+

Early and on the question. One hour spent testing whether a research question can actually be answered protects the 12 criterion C marks and prevents the whole of the scoping stage being bought a second time in DP2. The research question should be settled before the long break between the two Diploma years. Hours bought in the final fortnight can secure criterion D presentation marks and tighten criterion B, but they cannot change what the essay is about. If you only ever buy one hour, buy it in the first Diploma year.

Can we pay for a single session just to have a finished draft checked?+

Yes, and it is the most sensible first purchase for a family who is not sure they need anything. One hour on a complete draft, with written feedback mapped to the five criteria, establishes whether the problem is the prose, the question or the absence of an argument. At published market bands that is roughly AED 150-450 with no commitment to anything further. The output is a short list of changes the student can make alone. For a candidate at risk of a grade E it is the single most useful hour available.

How many hours does an essay with primary data usually need?+

More than a literature-based one, and the hours arrive earlier. Expect two to four hours on method design alone: what will be measured, how often, with what equipment, with what risk assessment, and which statistical test was chosen before any data was collected. Add the usual two to three hours of draft review and one to two on the reflections. Twelve hours across the project is common for an experimental science registration against six to eight for a History or Economics essay. The difference is almost entirely in the front half.

What does a tutoring quote in this market usually leave out?+

Three things. Reading time on a draft, which is where the real hours of a review sit. The number of hours the job actually takes, so you see a rate without a total. And whether the figure is per hour or per session, since a 45-minute session quoted hourly is not what it appears to be. Ask about all three in writing. On tax, ask the provider directly whether their figure is inclusive; the tax treatment of tuition is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority and not something a tutoring page should assert on your behalf.

Does the Extended Essay grade move the Diploma total enough to justify the spend?+

It can, and the arithmetic is more favourable than parents expect. The Extended Essay combines with Theory of Knowledge in a matrix awarding up to three of the 45 points, and a grade E in either is a failing condition that can stop the Diploma being awarded at all. Three points earned through the core generally cost fewer hours than lifting a Higher Level subject by three grades, because that means moving performance across two or three papers. Confirm the current matrix with your child's Diploma coordinator rather than relying on any third-party summary.

Are Extended Essay sessions better weekly, or clustered around deadlines?+

Clustered, for most candidates. The essay is a single submitted piece of work with distinct stages rather than a syllabus that needs covering, so a standing weekly hour often ends up filling time between the moments that matter. Two hours in the week a question is being settled are worth more than eight spread over two months. The exception is a student who has not yet found a question at all, or one taking subject tuition in the registered subject anyway, where a weekly slot lets criterion C build gradually instead of being rescued.

Is it cheaper to support the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together?+

Often, because the two feed the same three-point matrix and a mentor who understands one has most of the context for the other. The saving is in shared context rather than a discounted rate: the same conversation about what counts as evidence, what an unsupported claim looks like and how to evaluate a source serves both components. Whether one mentor can cover both depends on the subject the essay is registered in. A science registration usually needs a subject specialist for the essay, with Theory of Knowledge handled separately.

Does an Extended Essay mentor in Sharjah need a MoHRE permit, and is its cost in our fee?+

A permit is required and it costs nothing. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. So any tutor telling you their rate carries the cost of a permit is describing an expense that does not exist. Ask to see the permit document before a first paid session. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule has been published and no figure should be quoted to you.

Can a mentor collect or process our child's data to save time?+

No, and the saving would be worthless. The essay must be the candidate's own work, the authenticity declaration is signed by the student, and the viva voce exists partly so a supervisor can confirm the student can discuss their own decisions. A mentor may teach how to design a protocol, explain which statistical test suits a data set and show what a clean results table looks like. The student collects, enters and analyses. A candidate who cannot account for where a number came from has a problem that no amount of paid support can repair.

What happens if nobody is free who reads our child's registered subject?+

We say so rather than offering a near-match. For some registrations in Sharjah - Arabic A at academic level, Visual Arts theory, Mathematics - the pool is genuinely thin, and a general essay mentor placed on a specialist registration gives you confident advice about the wrong things. The honest options are a wait for the right person, a single diagnostic session with a generalist to triage criteria B and D only, or a clear recommendation that school supervision plus the student's own work is the better route. All three are preferable to a mismatch.

Start with one hour on the research question

If your child's Extended Essay question is not yet settled, that is where a Sharjah family's money goes furthest: one hour, early, protecting the 12 marks that cannot be recovered later. If a draft already exists, a single diagnostic session will tell you whether the problem is the prose, the question or the argument, and what the remaining weeks can realistically reach. Either way the first session is free, matched to the subject the essay is registered in, and delivered online over live video on Gulf Standard Time. You will get a quote for the stages your child needs, with the hours named - not an hourly rate with the total left to guesswork.
