IB Home Tutor in Sakamkam

An IB home tutor in Sakamkam is usually wanted for one specific thing: a Higher Level paper that is not going well, or an Internal Assessment that has stalled. IB Gram matches Sakamkam students to a specialist in that subject at that level and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. This page is about the syllabus itself — weightings, criteria, command terms and word limits — because that is what the marks come from.

IB & IGCSE in Sakamkam

The syllabus is the thing, not the postcode

Sakamkam sits inland from the Fujairah coast, closer to the Hajar mountain edge than the city-centre schools, and the afternoon drive back from those schools is longer than it looks on a map. That has one effect on tutoring and it is about timing rather than geography: a session booked for 17:00 that depends on somebody else's journey tends to become 17:20, then 17:30, and a homework cycle built on weekly sessions quietly stops working. A fixed online slot does not drift.

The bigger reason this page is written about the syllabus rather than about Sakamkam is supply. Fujairah's private-school sector is small, which means the number of adults within driving distance who have taught Higher Level Chemistry or Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches recently is small and in some subjects is zero. A family paying for proximity in that situation is paying more for a shorter list. IB Gram teaches Sakamkam students one-to-one over live video instead, on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India, and the same statement appears on every country page this site publishes.

So the useful content for a Sakamkam parent is not a description of the neighbourhood. It is the mechanics of how a Diploma grade is built, because once you can see where the marks are, you can tell within one trial lesson whether somebody knows the subject or merely knows about it. A Diploma subject grade comes from a small number of components with published weightings, assessed against published criteria, written in a command-term vocabulary that is itself examinable, inside word and page limits that are hard caps.

Those four things are what the sections below cover. There is a Higher against Standard comparison component by component, the scientific investigation criteria with their mark allocations, the two mathematics courses paper by paper, the command terms that decide more marks than content does, and the core — Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS — with every limit set out in a table. Nothing here is unique to Sakamkam, and that is the point: the syllabus is identical in Sakamkam, in Dubai and in Geneva, and the only variable is who is teaching it.

One honest caveat on dates. The IB's own session and results dates could not be verified from the organisation's own site for this project, so no IB exam or results date appears anywhere on this page. Diploma students in the UAE sit the May session; confirm every date with your school's IB coordinator rather than with any tutoring site, including this one. The same caution applies to the weightings and criteria quoted below: they were read from the current subject guides, but guides are revised, and your child's coordinator holds the version that governs their cohort. Treat the numbers here as a map of where the marks sit rather than as the authority for them, and ask the school to confirm anything you intend to plan around.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three IB programmes matter to a Sakamkam family, and the assessment changes completely between them. A tutor who treats the Middle Years Programme like a junior Diploma will teach the wrong things.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-school to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry with no external examinations, ending in an Exhibition in the final year. Assessment is teacher-led and continuous, which means there is no paper to practise and no mark scheme to work from. Tutoring at this stage is about reading fluency, number confidence and written expression rather than about the programme itself.

Fujairah has limited local Primary Years provision, so most Sakamkam families on an IB pathway start later, often entering the Middle Years Programme or the Diploma from a British or Indian primary route. A tutor's job at that transition is vocabulary and written explanation, because inquiry-based assessment rewards a student who can justify an answer in prose.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight and converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries. Mathematics uses knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The Personal Project in the final year is marked out of 24 across planning, applying skills and reflecting.

The criterion structure is the single most useful thing a Sakamkam parent can learn, because a student losing marks on criterion C in mathematics has a communication problem rather than a mathematics problem, and the remedy is different. Ask the school for the criterion breakdown behind the last reported grade rather than the grade alone.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum and up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix. Internal assessment carries real weight in every subject, generally twenty to thirty per cent.

Local Diploma provision in Fujairah is limited, so Sakamkam students on this route often board, commute or move emirate. An online slot survives all three without the engagement restarting, which matters because the Internal Assessment deadlines a school sets internally are earlier than most families expect and do not pause for a move.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is listed with the component weightings that decide where tutoring hours should go. Check the level with your child's coordinator first; a Higher Level plan applied to a Standard Level student wastes sessions on content that is not examinable.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level: Paper 1 and Paper 2 at 40% each, Exploration at 20%. Higher Level: Papers 1 and 2 at 30% each, Paper 3 at 20%, Exploration at 20%. Paper 3 is the extended-response problem paper and the least practised component in the whole course.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Identical weighting structure, with modelling and statistics replacing the heavier pure content. Calculator technique is examinable in its own right, and marks go to students who show the method the scheme rewards rather than only the answer the screen produced.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 at 36% including a data-analysis section, Paper 2 at 44%, Internal Assessment at 20%. Mechanics and fields questions lose marks on sign conventions and on diagrams drawn without labelled forces, both of which are correctable in a handful of sessions.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Same component split as Physics. Energetics and organic mechanisms account for most Higher Level losses, and the data-analysis section rewards practice on unfamiliar graphs rather than recall of familiar ones.

Biology

HL and SL

The heaviest content load in the science group, and the subject where revision most often becomes rereading. Command terms do the work: a question asking students to explain is not answered by a description, and that single distinction recovers more marks than extra content.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level: Paper 1 at 30%, Paper 2 at 40%, portfolio at 30%. Higher Level: Papers at 20, 30 and 30 with the portfolio at 20%. The portfolio is three commentaries of no more than 800 words each, built on real published articles.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Standard Level: Paper 1 at 35%, Paper 2 at 35%, Individual Oral at 30%. Higher Level adds the HL Essay at 20%. The Individual Oral requires a global issue traced through two texts, and preparing it is a distinct skill from essay writing.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with a pre-released case for the Higher Level paper. Ratio and break-even calculations are the most predictable marks available; the recurring failure is applying a sound concept to a business the stimulus does not actually describe.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Theory papers plus a solution-development Internal Assessment where product and documentation are assessed together. Strong programmers routinely lose marks on documentation, because the criteria reward evidence of a design process rather than working code alone.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

An interdisciplinary course that students sometimes choose as a lighter option and then find demanding, because it requires both scientific data handling and evaluative writing about human systems. The Internal Assessment is a genuine piece of fieldwork or secondary-data analysis, not a write-up.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to run Diploma support, all online and one-to-one. Which one fits depends on whether the problem is a paper, an Internal Assessment, or the core.

Single-subject weekly teaching

One session a week in one subject at one level, aligned to the school's scheme of work and running slightly ahead of it where possible. Marks improve most reliably from this arrangement because nothing is being repaired under time pressure. Best started in the first Diploma year rather than the second.

  • Fixed weekday and time on Gulf Standard Time
  • Past-paper questions set between sessions and marked before the next
  • Topic risk list maintained in writing and updated each half-term

Internal Assessment process coaching

The investigation, Exploration, portfolio or solution is the student's own work from first word to last. The tutor explains each criterion in the board's published wording, reads what the student has written, and names which criterion the draft is missing. A tutor does not write the Internal Assessment and will not draft the exploration for a student.

  • Criteria explained in the subject guide's own language
  • Word and page caps checked before the draft is written, not after
  • Feedback on the student's own text, never a rewrite

Paper technique block before a session

Six to eight sessions built entirely on timed past papers, marked against the published scheme, with each lost mark attributed to a cause: content, recall, misread question, misread command term, method shown badly, or time. Different causes need different remedies, which is why the first session measures rather than teaches.

  • Opens with a full paper under exam timing
  • Paper 3 at Higher Level drilled separately where it applies
  • Final sessions add no new content at all

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sakamkam

01

What an IB home tutor in Sakamkam actually does, and where the lesson happens

  • One subject, one level, one specialist, one fixed weekly slot
  • Market comparison: AED 150-300 online against AED 180-500 in-home
  • No tutor is sent to Sakamkam or to any UAE address
  • Every word and page limit checked against the subject guide

Through IB Gram, an IB home tutor for a Sakamkam student means a named subject specialist teaching one-to-one over live video at a fixed time each week on Gulf Standard Time. It does not mean anybody arriving at the door. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and that is the stated position across every country page on this site.

The in-home market in the UAE is real and priced accordingly: published rates for a travelling one-to-one tutor run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. In Dubai the gap buys convenience. Inland from the Fujairah coast it buys a shorter list of subjects, because the set of people who will drive to Sakamkam on a weekday evening and who have also taught Higher Level Chemistry is very close to empty.

What a specialist does in those sessions is narrower than parents often expect, and the narrowness is the value. They work on one subject at one level. They work from past papers and the published assessment criteria rather than from a textbook alone. They mark what the student produces and attribute each lost mark to a cause. And they know the limits — 4,000 words on the Extended Essay, 3,000 on the sciences investigation, 800 per Economics commentary — because those are hard caps and a draft over the line loses marks for a reason unrelated to its quality.

The rest of this page is the mechanics of that: weightings, criteria, command terms and limits. If you read nothing else, read the command-terms section. It is the cheapest grade movement available in the Diploma and almost nobody teaches it explicitly.

02

Higher Level against Standard Level, component by component

Families talk about Higher Level as though it were the same course with more of it. It is not. The content is wider, but the structural difference that costs marks is the extra component and the way weightings redistribute around it. In the sciences the weightings are the same at both levels — Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44%, the Internal Assessment at 20% — but the Higher Level papers examine additional material and allow less time per mark in practice.

In mathematics the structure changes outright. Standard Level is two papers at 40% each plus the Exploration at 20%. Higher Level is three papers, at 30%, 30% and 20%, with the Exploration still at 20%. That third paper is the extended-response problem paper, and it is consistently the least practised component in the Diploma, partly because it does not resemble the others and partly because schools reach it last. A Higher Level mathematics student who has never sat a timed Paper 3 is carrying an avoidable risk into the exam room.

In Economics the redistribution runs the other way: the portfolio drops from 30% at Standard Level to 20% at Higher, and a third paper appears at 30%. In English A: Language and Literature the HL Essay appears at 20% and the Individual Oral drops in weight. The general rule is that Higher Level adds a component and dilutes the others, so a student who is strong on internal assessment and weak on papers is relatively worse off at Higher Level than the content difference alone suggests.

What this means for a tutoring plan is specific. Find out which component is carrying the lowest marks, work out what percentage of the final grade it represents, and spend the hours there. A student losing marks evenly across Paper 2 at 44% needs different work from one losing marks on an Internal Assessment worth 20%, and the second is usually the faster fix because the criteria are published and the work is not timed.

The scientific investigation: criteria, cap and where the marks actually go

The Internal Assessment in the Diploma sciences is worth twenty per cent of the grade, is capped at 3,000 words, and is marked against four named criteria. Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation each carry six marks, for twenty-four in total. Those four names are the most useful thing a parent can know, because a student who has been told their investigation is weak has almost always been told so about one criterion rather than all four, and the remedies are completely different.

A weak research design is a planning failure: an unclear research question, a variable not properly controlled, insufficient data planned. It is the only one of the four that cannot be repaired after the data is collected, which is why the planning conversation has to happen before the practical work and not after. A weak data analysis is usually about uncertainty and processing rather than about arithmetic. A weak conclusion typically states a result without linking it back to the scientific context. A weak evaluation lists limitations without saying how any of them would be addressed.

The 3,000-word cap is a hard limit and students treat it as a target, which is a mistake. Marks are awarded for what satisfies the criteria, not for length, and a tightly written investigation of 2,200 words routinely outscores a padded 3,000-word one because the padding dilutes the parts being marked. Tables, figures and calculations are not the problem; discursive background reading is where the words go.

A tutor's role here has a boundary that should be stated before the work starts. The investigation is the student's own from the research question onwards. A tutor explains each criterion in the guide's own wording, reads a draft the student has written, says which criterion it is missing and why, and teaches the technique needed to fix it. A tutor does not write the investigation, does not draft the evaluation, and does not edit a piece to completion so that the sentences become the tutor's.

DP SCIENCES INVESTIGATION — FOUR CRITERIA, SIX MARKS EACH
CriterionWhat it rewardsThe common failureWhen it can still be fixed
Research designA focused question, controlled variables, enough data plannedA question too broad to answer with the data collectedBefore the practical work only
Data analysisCorrect processing, uncertainties carried through, clear presentationRaw data presented without uncertainty or propagationAfter collection, from the raw data
ConclusionA result interpreted against the scientific context and literatureA result stated with no link back to the underlying scienceAt drafting stage

Word capNothing; it is a limit, not a criterionTreating 3,000 words as a target and padding the backgroundBefore submission, by cutting discursive reading
04

Command terms: the cheapest marks in the Diploma

  • Explain needs a mechanism; describe does not, and the marks differ
  • Evaluate needs a judgement, not a balanced list with no conclusion
  • Analyse needs an effect, not the identification of a technique
  • Sort past-paper questions by command term before revising content

Every Diploma subject guide publishes a list of command terms with definitions, and every paper is written using them deliberately. State, outline, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss, justify and compare are not interchangeable synonyms chosen for variety. They specify what the answer has to do, and the mark scheme is built around that specification. A student who answers an explain question with a description has written something true and scored a fraction of the marks available.

This is the single most common diagnosable fault in marked Diploma scripts and it is almost never taught explicitly, because schools are busy covering content. It is also the fastest thing to fix. An hour spent sorting past-paper questions by command term, writing the first sentence of each answer, and comparing those sentences to the mark scheme moves more marks than an hour of new content at almost any point in the two years.

The pattern repeats per subject in recognisable ways. In the sciences, explain requires a mechanism and describe does not. In Economics, evaluate requires a judgement supported by the diagram, and a balanced list of advantages and disadvantages with no judgement scores in the lower band. In English, analyse requires the effect of a technique on a reader rather than its identification. In History, the source questions reward provenance over content summary. None of this is difficult. It just has to be noticed.

The practical test for a tutor is to ask them, in a trial lesson, what the difference is between describe and explain in your child's subject, and what it is worth. A specialist answers with an example from a paper. A generalist answers in the abstract. That one question is more diagnostic than any credential, and it takes thirty seconds.

05

The core from Sakamkam: Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS

The Diploma core is where the most Sakamkam enquiries arrive, and it is the part schools in a small market have the least capacity to supervise closely. The Extended Essay is an independent 4,000-word research piece with a supervisor appointed by the school. Theory of Knowledge is examined through an essay of up to 1,600 words on a prescribed title and an exhibition with a commentary of up to 950 words. CAS is not graded but must be completed, and an incomplete CAS portfolio prevents the award of the diploma regardless of points.

Together the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge contribute up to three bonus points through a published matrix, which sounds small until you notice that three points is often the gap between an offer and a near miss. More importantly, the core is where deadlines bite. A school sets internal submission dates well before any external one, and those internal dates are what a tutoring plan has to work around. Ask the coordinator for the full internal calendar at the start of the first Diploma year, not in the spring of the second.

The failure mode is consistent. A student chooses an Extended Essay topic they find interesting rather than one that can be researched within the available material, and discovers the problem at the first draft. A Theory of Knowledge essay restates the prescribed title in different words rather than arguing a position about knowledge. A CAS portfolio accumulates activities without the reflections that evidence them. None of these is a subject-knowledge problem, which is why a subject tutor is often the wrong help and a process coach is the right one.

What support legitimately looks like here is narrow. Explaining the criteria. Reading a draft and naming which criterion it misses. Teaching how to turn a broad question into a researchable one. Checking the limits. The work is the student's own, and a tutor who offers to produce the essay is offering the student a malpractice finding rather than a grade.

06

Why Sakamkam has no local Higher Level specialist in some subjects

This is arithmetic rather than a criticism of Fujairah schools. The emirate's private-school sector is small, local Diploma provision is limited, and a small sector employs few teachers per subject. For Higher Level Chemistry, Higher Level Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, Computer Science or Visual Arts, the number of people living within a reasonable drive of Sakamkam who have taught that course recently may be one or none. Paying an in-home premium does not change that number.

The same arithmetic applies in Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain, and it explains something about the pages that rank for searches like this one. None of them mentions any of the three emirates. They are written for Dubai and Abu Dhabi and reach the rest of the country by substituting a place name, which means a Sakamkam family reading them is looking at a supply picture that does not exist on this side of the mountains.

The practical response is to change what you are shortlisting for. Stop looking for proximity and start asking about coverage: can this subject at this level actually be staffed, how soon, and what happens if it cannot. A common Standard Level subject staffs quickly. A Higher Level science staffs reasonably. A minority Higher Level subject in one specific evening slot sometimes cannot be staffed at all, and you should be told that before paying rather than discovering it in week three.

The second consequence is scheduling, which matters more in Sakamkam than on the coast. The afternoon drive back from the city-centre schools is longer, so a travelling tutor's arrival time compresses the session or pushes it late. An online slot at 17:30 is an online slot at 17:30 every week, and the weekly homework cycle only works if the sessions land where they are supposed to.

07

Academic honesty, materials and what a tutor should refuse

Assessed work in the Diploma must be the student's own, and the consequence of breaching that lands on the student. One page in this search result sells completed Internal Assessment work at a fixed price. That is not a service with a quality question attached; it is a malpractice trigger under the board's own rules, and the candidate carries the finding.

The line is drawn by who produced the sentences. A tutor may teach the content, explain criteria in the guide's published wording, model how a comparable task is approached, read a draft the student has written and name the criterion it misses, and teach the student to fix it themselves. A tutor may not write the Internal Assessment, draft the Extended Essay, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become theirs. Asking a prospective tutor what they would do if your child requested one written paragraph is a fast and revealing test.

There is a second rule about materials that parents rarely hear. Subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the board. A provider offering them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure as well. The correct practice is to reference them and link to the official source so that the parent reads the real document. Everything on this page about weightings and limits should be confirmed against the current subject guide through your child's coordinator.

Finally, a statement about this site's own position. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International, Pearson, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge or the Sharjah Private Education Authority. It holds no such relationship and claims none, it runs no UAE premises, and it should never be described in those terms.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Sakamkam

Sakamkam and the districts around it, compared on the two variables that actually change a tutoring plan: when a child is home, and whether a local subject specialist exists at the level needed.

Sakamkam

Inland and north-west of Fujairah city, nearer the mountain edge. The return drive from the coastal schools runs longer in the afternoon, which pushes realistic session starts to around 17:30 and makes a fixed slot more valuable than a flexible one.

Fujairah City centre

Where the emirate's private-school capacity and the widest local subject choice sit. Students from Sakamkam who school here have a manageable commute, but the subject range is still narrow against Dubai or Sharjah.

Al Faseel

Coastal district near the corniche and the port, around fifteen minutes from the city schools. Session starts can realistically be earlier than in Sakamkam, which is the only practical difference between the two for tutoring purposes.

Merashid

Settled residential area where demand runs towards sciences and mathematics at the harder end. That is exactly the band where local specialist supply is thinnest in Fujairah, so the format of delivery matters more than the distance.

Al Gurfa

South along the coast road and more dispersed. Families here often run two school runs, so neither child is home before 16:00 and sessions sit in the 17:00 to 20:00 window as a rule rather than an exception.

Dibba Al Fujairah

Around ninety minutes north of Sakamkam, with the fewest local secondary options anywhere in the emirate. For a Diploma student in Dibba, online delivery is not a preference between two viable options.

Khor Fakkan

A Sharjah enclave on the same coastline, so its private schools answer to the Sharjah Private Education Authority rather than the federal Ministry of Education that supervises Fujairah's.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sakamkam

Fujairah city and the inland districts

The emirate's private schools cluster in and around Fujairah city, within reach of Sakamkam and Merashid. The list is short and does change, so check the Ministry of Education's own directory for the currently licensed set rather than relying on any third-party page.

IB Diploma schools Fujairah families reach for

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, the level and the component that is failing

Not just the subject. Higher or Standard Level, and which component is carrying the lowest marks: a paper, the Internal Assessment, or the core. Those three facts decide the match and the plan, and together they take one message to establish rather than two sessions to discover.

  2. 02

Get the coordinator's internal deadline calendar

Schools set internal Internal Assessment and Extended Essay deadlines well ahead of any external date, and those are the dates a plan has to respect. Ask for the whole calendar at the start of the first Diploma year. The commonest cause of a crisis in the second year is a deadline nobody wrote down.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, used as a specification test

Ask the tutor what the difference is between describe and explain in your child's subject, and what it is worth. A specialist answers with an example from a paper in thirty seconds. Your child's view on whether they could follow the explanation is the other half of the signal.

  4. 04

    Diagnostic in the first fortnight

A timed past paper or a marked draft, returned with every lost mark attributed to a cause: content, recall under pressure, misread question, misread command term, method shown poorly, or time. Ask for it in writing. It is the document the whole plan should be built from.

  5. 05

Fixed slot, with Ramadan planned rather than improvised

Sessions run at the same time each week on Gulf Standard Time, after the Sakamkam school run. During Ramadan the slot usually moves later, often post-Iftar, agreed a week ahead so the work set between sessions still gets marked rather than quietly dropped.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the level, not to the subject

Higher Level Chemistry and Standard Level Chemistry are different papers with different time pressure per mark, and a plan written for one wastes sessions on the other. Matching to subject and level is a small distinction that decides whether the hours convert into marks at all.

Weightings decide where the hours go

A component worth 44% and a component worth 20% deserve different amounts of attention, and the untimed criteria-marked ones are usually the faster fix. Reading the weighting table before booking is the cheapest planning anyone can do, which is why it is published here in full.

Command terms taught explicitly

The most common diagnosable fault in marked Diploma scripts is answering the wrong command. Schools rarely teach it because they are covering content. An hour sorting past questions by command term moves more marks than an hour of new content at almost any stage.

Limits checked against the guide, not from memory

4,000 words on the Extended Essay, 1,600 on the Theory of Knowledge essay, 950 on the exhibition commentary, 3,000 on the sciences investigation, 800 per Economics commentary. A draft over a cap loses marks for a reason unrelated to its quality, which is entirely avoidable.

Geography stops limiting the shortlist

Sakamkam's local pool of Higher Level specialists is small and in some subjects empty, and an in-home premium does not create one. Online one-to-one delivery replaces who lives nearby with who has taught the course, which is the only change that alters the outcome.

The honesty line stated before the work starts

Teaching, criteria, feedback on the student's own draft. Not writing, not completing, not supplying, and no reproduction of the board's papers or mark schemes as downloads. A page in this search result sells finished Internal Assessments, and the candidate carries that risk.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sakamkam: your questions answered

Will an IB tutor come to our home in Sakamkam?+

No. IB Gram delivers lessons to Sakamkam students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India. An in-home market does exist here and published rates for it run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. The question worth asking before paying that is whether a travelling tutor inland from the Fujairah coast has actually taught your child's subject at the level they are sitting, because in several Higher Level subjects nobody locally has.

What is the Internal Assessment worth in an IB science, and how long can it be?+

It is worth twenty per cent of the subject grade and is capped at 3,000 words. It is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each carrying six marks. The cap is a limit rather than a target, and a tightly written investigation of around 2,200 words often outscores a padded one at the cap because padding dilutes what is being marked. Confirm the current figures with your child's coordinator against the live subject guide.

Why does Higher Level Mathematics have a third paper?+

Paper 3 at Higher Level is an extended-response problem paper, worth twenty per cent, and it exists to examine sustained mathematical reasoning that the shorter papers cannot reach. It does not resemble Papers 1 and 2, schools usually reach it last, and it is consequently the least practised component in the Diploma. A Higher Level mathematics student who has never sat it under timed conditions is carrying avoidable risk. It is worth drilling separately and early rather than in the final fortnight.

My child's science investigation came back marked down on research design. Can that be repaired?+

Research design is the one criterion that cannot be fixed after the data has been collected, because it is about the question, the controlled variables and whether enough data was planned. If the practical work is already done, the honest route is to maximise the other three criteria — data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — which together carry eighteen of the twenty-four marks. If the work has not been done yet, the planning conversation is the single highest-value session available.

Which command terms cost Sakamkam students the most marks?+

Explain, evaluate and analyse, consistently. Explain requires a mechanism and a description does not, so an answer that is entirely true can score a fraction of the available marks. Evaluate requires a judgement supported by evidence rather than a balanced list with no conclusion. Analyse requires the effect of something rather than its identification. Sorting past-paper questions by command term and writing only the first sentence of each answer is a cheap exercise that moves marks quickly.

How many points does the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combination add?+

Up to three bonus points, awarded through a published matrix that combines the grades for both components. Three points sounds minor until it is the gap between meeting an offer and missing it. The Extended Essay is capped at 4,000 words, the Theory of Knowledge essay at 1,600 and the exhibition commentary at 950. CAS carries no points at all but must be completed, and an incomplete portfolio prevents the diploma being awarded regardless of the subject scores.

Does local Diploma provision exist in Fujairah for a Sakamkam family?+

It is limited, which is why Sakamkam students on this route often board, commute to Sharjah or Dubai, or move emirate. The practical consequence for tutoring is that an online slot survives all three without the engagement having to restart, and that matters because internally set Internal Assessment deadlines do not pause for a school move. Fujairah's private schools are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than by an emirate-level authority, so school-level enquiries go there.

Is a subject tutor the right help for the Theory of Knowledge essay?+

Usually not. The failure in a Theory of Knowledge essay is rarely a knowledge gap; it is restating the prescribed title in different words instead of arguing a position about how knowledge is produced and justified. That is a process and argument problem, so process coaching fits better than subject teaching. The support is explaining the criteria, reading what the student has written, and naming where the argument is absent. The essay itself has to be the student's own work.

When should a Sakamkam student start Diploma tutoring?+

The cheapest point is the first Diploma year, running one session a week slightly ahead of the school's scheme of work so each topic is met twice. The second year is where tutoring becomes repair work under time pressure, and repair costs more per mark gained. If you are already in the second year, start with a diagnostic rather than a lesson: a timed paper marked against the published scheme, with each lost mark attributed to a cause.

Can one tutor handle two Higher Level subjects for the same student?+

Rarely well. Mathematics and Physics is a realistic pairing because the techniques overlap. Chemistry and Biology at Higher Level is not, and a language paired with a science almost never is. The attraction is scheduling convenience and the cost is depth in the weaker subject. Two specialists on two evenings works better, with one of them asked to keep sight of the overall deadline calendar so no core deadline is tracked twice or not at all.

Why are no IB exam dates printed on this page?+

Because they could not be verified from the International Baccalaureate's own site for this project, and an unverified date that a parent acts on is worse than no date. Diploma students in the UAE sit the May session. Cambridge and Pearson dates elsewhere on this site are sourced from those boards' own published guidance and are used with their framing. For anything IB-specific, ask your child's coordinator and work from the school's own calendar.

What does a Diploma tutor charge around Fujairah?+

Published market figures read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more, and travelling in-home tutors at AED 180 to 500. Monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run around AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those are market rates with their sources named, not IB Gram prices; ours follows the free trial lesson.

How is the Middle Years Programme assessed differently from the Diploma?+

The Middle Years Programme uses four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight and converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries, rather than terminal papers with percentage weightings. In mathematics the criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. That matters because a student weak on the communication criterion has a writing problem, not a mathematics problem, and the remedy differs completely.

What should I ask for after the first month of sessions?+

The updated topic risk list from the diagnostic, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged, and the marked work it is based on. If an item has not moved in three weeks, that is the conversation to have rather than waiting for a report. Progress in the Diploma is visible in marks on marked scripts and in criteria met on a draft. Anything reported as confidence or engagement alone is not yet evidence of a grade moving.

Find the failing component, then book one trial lesson

The useful first step for a Sakamkam family is not choosing a tutor but identifying the component. Get the subject, the level, and which part is carrying the lowest marks: a named paper, the Internal Assessment, or the core. Ask your child's coordinator for the internal deadline calendar at the same time. Then take a free trial lesson and ask the tutor what separates describe from explain in that subject and what it is worth. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, after the school day. Nobody is sent to a Sakamkam address, and every figure here is a published market rate with its source named.
