IGCSE Home Tutor in Sakamkam

Before you book an IGCSE home tutor in Sakamkam, find out which board your child's school entered. Cambridge 0620 and Pearson Edexcel 4CH1 are both called Chemistry, and they are assessed differently enough that a tutor working from the wrong one wastes your money. IB Gram matches Sakamkam students by syllabus code and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Sakamkam

Two boards, one subject name, different papers

The most expensive mistake a Sakamkam family makes with IGCSE tutoring has nothing to do with the tutor's ability. It is booking somebody for Physics when the school entered Pearson Edexcel 4PH1 and the tutor teaches Cambridge 0625. Both are International GCSE Physics. Both cover broadly similar content. But Cambridge examines practical skills in a separate component worth a fifth of the grade, taken as a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper, and Edexcel has no separate practical exam at all, examining those skills inside its two theory papers instead. A term of preparation aimed at the wrong component is a term gone.

So this page starts from the specification rather than from the neighbourhood, because that is where the marks live. Sakamkam sits inland from the Fujairah coast, nearer the mountain edge, and the afternoon return from the city-centre schools runs longer than the distance suggests. The practical effect on tutoring is scheduling rather than supply: a session that depends on somebody else's drive tends to start late, and a weekly homework cycle only works if the sessions land where they were booked. An online slot at 17:30 stays at 17:30.

IB Gram teaches Sakamkam students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. It does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service and the statement appears on every country page this site publishes. The URL says home tutor because that is the phrase parents type, and the honest answer to it is this one rather than a quiet redirect halfway down a page. The in-home market exists and is priced at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour on published figures; what it buys inland from this coast is a shorter list of available subjects rather than a better one.

What follows is the specification detail that decides a grade. A board-by-board comparison so you can identify which one your child sits. The paper structure subject by subject with the percentage each component carries. The topics where Extended candidates predictably lose marks, which are narrower and more fixable than general revision advice implies. The difference between the 9-1 and A*-G grade scales and why a school's choice of syllabus version matters on a university application. And a method for using past papers properly, because almost every family already has a folder of them and almost nobody uses them in a way that produces marks.

One structural fact to hold onto throughout. Cambridge International runs International GCSE in a June series and a November series, and those are the two a UAE candidate sits; the February and March series exists but is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel runs International GCSE in May/June and November. Entries close months ahead of the paper, and coursework components close earlier still, so the question of which board your child sits should be settled long before the revision question becomes urgent.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages shape an IGCSE plan for a Sakamkam student, and the entry decisions made at each one constrain the next. Most of them are made by the school and explained to the parent afterwards, if at all.

YR 9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

The year before entry decisions

The last year in which a tier placement can be influenced cheaply. Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests, sat in March, May and October windows, are diagnostic rather than certificating, and schools use them for setting. A student who performs below their ability in Checkpoint maths can find themselves on a Core pathway for two years as a result.

In a small school market the sets are coarser, so Sakamkam families have less room than a Dubai family would for a borderline student to be placed generously. Work on Extended-only content in Year 9, proved by a timed Extended paper marked against the official scheme, is the evidence that reopens the conversation with a teacher.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Eight or nine subjects over two years, assessed almost entirely by terminal written paper. Grades report as 9-1 or A*-G depending on the syllabus version the school entered. Coursework exists in some subjects and not others, and the practical arrangements in the sciences differ by board rather than by subject.

The Ministry of Education's sourced requirement on the British track is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. A ranking competitor page states six subjects. Five is what the published clarification reported, and the difference changes which subjects a Sakamkam family should protect.

AS/A2Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level

Three or four subjects taken deeper. Entry is gated on IGCSE grades in the same subject, which is why a tier decision in Year 10 reaches further than the certificate. AS can be cashed in at the end of Year 12 as a standalone qualification at some schools and not at others.

The equivalency rule continues at this stage: one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. A Sakamkam student trimming to two AS subjects without checking that should verify it through the Ministry of Education's own channel, not through a tutoring site.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma as the alternative route

Six subjects plus an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, scored out of 45 with 24 as the diploma minimum. The step from Extended IGCSE to Higher Level is real but bridgeable with a term of targeted work, particularly in mathematics where the Analysis and Approaches course assumes fluency Extended does not require.

Local Diploma provision in Fujairah is limited, so this route usually involves a school or emirate move for a Sakamkam family. No verified IB points threshold for Ministry of Education equivalency exists in any source this project could check, so none is published here even though competitor pages publish one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the subjects Sakamkam families most often ask for, each with both boards' codes and the specific place marks go missing. The failure points are narrower than general revision advice suggests, which is what makes them worth tutoring.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended · Edexcel 4MA1 Foundation and Higher

Cambridge splits the entry between a non-calculator and a calculator paper at half the grade each; Edexcel runs two calculator papers at 50% apiece. Extended and Higher candidates lose most marks on bounds, algebraic fractions, vectors and the final parts of structured questions where the method has to be written out.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Edexcel 4PH1

Cambridge: multiple choice at 30%, theory at 50%, practical component at 20%. Edexcel: two written papers with practical skills examined inside them. Circuit calculations and the distinction between series and parallel behaviour under load account for the largest predictable loss at Extended tier.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Edexcel 4CH1

Mole calculations that require two conversions, the exact wording of tests for ions and gases, and ionic equations balanced for charge as well as atoms. Organic reaction conditions are pure recall and are the fastest marks in the subject to recover in a short run of sessions.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Edexcel 4BI1

Water-potential and osmosis language, genetic-cross notation written out in full, and data-handling on an unfamiliar graph. The content load is large enough that a topic-by-topic risk list beats a general revision timetable by a wide margin.

English as a First Language

Cambridge 0500 · Edexcel 4EA1

Reading and writing papers rather than literature. Directed writing is assessed on register and audience, so a technically clean piece in the wrong voice sits below its potential. Summary questions reward the student's own words and penalise phrasing lifted from the passage.

Economics

Cambridge 0455 · Edexcel 4EC1

Diagram accuracy carries weight the prose around it cannot recover: an unlabelled axis or a shift drawn the wrong way loses marks outright. Extended papers reward a judgement supported by the diagram rather than a two-sided list with no conclusion attached.

Business Studies

Cambridge 0450 · Edexcel 4BS1

The case-study insert decides the answer, and the recurring error is a correct textbook point applied to a business the insert does not describe. Break-even, cash-flow and ratio questions are the most predictable marks and are usually lost to arithmetic.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Edexcel 4CP0

Pseudocode answers are marked on logic rather than syntax, which students find counterintuitive after a year of writing Python. Binary, hexadecimal and two's complement conversion appear every series and reward drilling until they are automatic.

Geography

Cambridge 0460 · Edexcel 4GE1

Skills questions on maps, graphs and photographs are the dependable marks; case studies decide the grade, and a named example with figures scores where a generic one does not. Fujairah's coastline and water scarcity are usable local material students rarely think to deploy.

Additional and International Mathematics

Cambridge 0606 and 0607, Extended only

0607 International Mathematics includes an investigation paper no other maths syllabus has, and is often chosen by schools feeding into the IB. 0606 Additional Mathematics bridges to A Level for strong Extended candidates. Both reward fully written methods and punish answers that jump to a result.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all delivered online one-to-one. The right one depends on whether the problem is content, technique or a specific component such as a practical paper.

Weekly single-subject teaching

One session a week against one specification, aligned to the school's scheme of work and ideally running slightly ahead of it so each topic is met twice. This produces marks more reliably than any other arrangement because nothing is being repaired against a deadline. Best started in Year 10.

  • Fixed weekday and time on Gulf Standard Time
  • Past-paper questions set between sessions and marked before the next one
  • A written topic risk list kept current rather than rebuilt each term

Practical and alternative-to-practical preparation

Only relevant on the Cambridge sciences, where the 20% practical component is sat either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the school chooses which. These are different pieces of preparation and conflating them wastes sessions. Ask the school which component is entered before booking.

  • Alternative-to-practical drilled on past papers and apparatus diagrams
  • Practical test prepared through method writing and error analysis
  • Edexcel candidates covered through the theory papers instead

A paper-technique run before a series

Six to eight sessions built on timed past papers marked against the official scheme, with each lost mark attributed to a cause: content, recall, misread question, misread command term, method shown badly, or time. The first session measures rather than teaches, because those six causes need different remedies.

  • Opens with a complete paper under exam timing
  • Second half runs full papers weekly rather than topic work
  • Final week adds nothing new and closes the risk list

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sakamkam

01

What an IGCSE home tutor in Sakamkam works from, and where the lesson happens

  • One subject, one specification, one specialist, one fixed weekly slot
  • Ask any tutor which papers your child sits and what each is worth
  • Market comparison: AED 150-300 online against AED 180-500 in-home
  • No tutor is sent to Sakamkam or any other UAE address

Through IB Gram, this means a named specialist for one subject and one specification, teaching your child one-to-one over live video at a fixed weekly time on Gulf Standard Time. It does not mean somebody driving to Sakamkam. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and the same sentence appears on every country page this site publishes.

The specification is the thing that makes the match useful. A specialist should be able to tell you, without looking anything up, which papers your child sits, what each is worth, whether a practical component exists, and the three topics on which candidates at that tier most reliably lose marks. If they cannot, they know the subject rather than the examination, and in a two-year course assessed entirely at the end, those are different qualifications.

That matters inland from this coast more than it does in Dubai, because of supply rather than quality. Fujairah's private-school sector is small, so the number of adults within a reasonable drive of Sakamkam who have taught Extended Chemistry or Economics against a current specification may be one or none. Published rates for a travelling in-home tutor run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. Here the premium buys a shorter subject list, not a better outcome.

Everything below is specification detail. If you read one section, read the board comparison, because identifying which board your child sits is the decision that makes every other decision possible.

02

Cambridge or Edexcel: establish which one before you book anything

Schools choose their board subject by subject, and they do not always announce it. A Sakamkam school might enter Cambridge for the sciences and Pearson Edexcel for mathematics, or the reverse, and a student can sit two boards across one certificate set without it ever being mentioned at home. The code is on the entry confirmation, and the exams officer can tell you in a sentence. It is the single most useful question a parent can ask before paying for anything.

The structural differences matter in practice. In the sciences, Cambridge carries a separate practical component worth a fifth of the grade, sat either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper at the school's choice. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam; practical understanding is examined inside the written papers. A student prepared for an alternative-to-practical paper that they are not sitting has lost that preparation entirely.

In mathematics the tiering language differs. Cambridge 0580 splits into Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C. Edexcel 4MA1 splits into Foundation and Higher tier. The tiers are not interchangeable in content or in difficulty profile, and a tutor who has only taught one will guess at the other. Cambridge also offers 0607 International Mathematics, which includes an investigation paper that exists nowhere else and which schools feeding into the IB often prefer.

On session structure both boards run a November series alongside their main summer one, which makes a single-subject resit a realistic option rather than a year's wait. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who misses an exam after using the wrong one. Work from the timetable the exams officer provides.

03

Paper structure subject by subject, and the percentage each component carries

Tutoring hours should follow the weightings, and most families never see them. A component worth half the grade deserves more attention than one worth a fifth, and an untimed coursework component is usually the fastest place to gain marks because the criteria are published and there is no clock. Yet revision conversations at home almost always start from the topic a student dislikes rather than from the component carrying the most marks.

On the Cambridge sciences the split is consistent across Physics, Chemistry and Biology: a multiple-choice paper worth thirty per cent, a theory paper worth fifty, and the practical component worth twenty. That makes the theory paper the single largest target in every one of them, and it is also the paper where command-word errors do the most damage, because the answers are extended rather than selected. Multiple choice rewards elimination technique, which is a teachable skill in its own right and rarely taught.

Mathematics is split evenly between its two papers on both boards, which sounds simpler and in practice is not, because the non-calculator paper on Cambridge tests a different skill set from the calculator paper. A student who practises only with a calculator to hand arrives at the non-calculator paper with no arithmetic fluency and loses marks that have nothing to do with their understanding. Splitting practice between the two deliberately is a small change with a large return.

The rest of the subjects distribute across two or three papers with the inserts and case studies carrying the weight in Business Studies and Economics. The table gives the shape; your child's school can confirm the exact components for the entry year, and the board's own syllabus page is the authority. Specifications are revised, and a tutor working from a specification two revisions old is a real risk in subjects where the paper structure has changed recently.

Where Extended candidates lose marks, and why the list is shorter than you think

  • Chemistry: two-step moles, ion and gas tests, charge-balanced equations, organic conditions
  • Physics: circuits under load, sign conventions, moments, units against quantities
  • Biology: water potential, genetic-cross notation, explain against describe
  • Mathematics: bounds, algebraic fractions, vectors, written method on final parts

General revision advice assumes the problem is spread across the syllabus. In marked scripts it rarely is. A student sitting Extended papers in three sciences and mathematics typically has four to seven identifiable topics carrying the bulk of their lost marks, and the same topics recur across cohorts because they are the ones where a plausible wrong method produces a plausible wrong answer. That is why a diagnostic paper is worth more than a revision plan: it turns a vague anxiety into a list with seven items on it.

In Chemistry the recurring items are mole calculations requiring two conversions, the precise wording of tests for ions and gases, ionic equations balanced for charge rather than only for atoms, and the conditions attached to organic reactions. The last of those is pure recall and can be closed in two sessions, which makes it the cheapest mark recovery in the subject and the first thing a specialist should go after.

In Physics the list is circuit behaviour under load, the sign conventions in anything involving direction, moments where the pivot is not where the student assumes, and the difference between the quantities in a formula and the units they are measured in. In Biology it is water-potential language, genetic-cross notation written out in full rather than in shorthand, and the explain-versus-describe distinction, which alone accounts for a surprising share of lost marks across the whole paper.

In mathematics the recurring losses are bounds, algebraic fractions, vector geometry and the final parts of structured questions where a method has to be written out to earn method marks. A student who arrives at the right answer with no working loses marks they already earned; a student who shows a correct method and makes an arithmetic slip keeps most of them. Teaching that asymmetry explicitly changes behaviour faster than any amount of content revision.

05

Grade scales, tiering and the decisions a school makes for you

Two administrative decisions shape an IGCSE outcome before any teaching happens, and both are made by the school. The first is the tier: Core or Extended on Cambridge, Foundation or Higher on Edexcel maths. A Core candidate is assessed on a narrower syllabus and cannot be awarded above grade C, which removes the top four grades before the course begins. The second is the syllabus version, which determines whether grades report as 9-1 or as A*-G.

The tier decision is usually taken in Year 10 on Year 9 evidence and a teacher's judgement, and in a small school market it tends towards caution because the sets are coarser. From the school's point of view placing a borderline student on Core protects them from a poor Extended grade. From the family's point of view it closes the A Level routes that depend on a B or better. Neither view is dishonest; they are just different risks, and the parent is usually only told about one of them.

What reopens the conversation is evidence rather than argument. Extended-only content taught in Year 9 or early Year 10, followed by a timed Extended paper marked against the official scheme, gives a teacher something concrete to re-set on. Ask in writing which tier has been entered and when the entry deadline falls, and ask well before that deadline rather than after the mock, because entries close months ahead of the paper.

The grade-scale question matters later and catches families out at application time. A 9-1 grade and an A*-G grade are not interchangeable, universities publish requirements in one or the other, and a certificate set that mixes the two across subjects needs explaining on a form. None of that is a problem; it is simply worth knowing which scale your child's subjects report on before the reference is written rather than after.

Using past papers properly: a method rather than a pile

Almost every Sakamkam family already has past papers. Very few use them in a way that produces marks, because the default method is to work through a paper, check the answers, feel either relieved or alarmed, and move to the next one. That produces familiarity rather than improvement, and familiarity is why a student can do forty papers and still sit the real one at the same grade.

The method that works has three steps and the first one is the hard part. Sit the paper under genuine exam timing, with no notes and no pausing. Mark it against the official scheme rather than against a model answer, because the scheme shows where the marks are allocated and that allocation is the actual information. Then attribute every lost mark to a cause: content not known, content known but not recalled under pressure, question misread, command term misread, method correct but not written, or time ran out.

Those six causes have different remedies and that is the whole point. Content not known needs teaching. Content not recalled needs retrieval practice, which is a different activity. A misread command term needs the command-term list and an hour sorting questions by it. A method not written needs a behavioural change rather than any teaching at all. Time ran out needs section timing targets. A student told simply to revise more will apply the wrong remedy to five of the six.

The second half of a preparation run should move to full papers under timing, one a week, because stamina and pacing are separate skills from content and are the last to develop. The final week should add nothing new. If a topic has not been learned by then, learning it costs more marks elsewhere in the paper than it can recover, and a student walking in tired from a late discovery is a worse bet than one walking in rested with a known gap.

07

Papers, mark schemes and coursework: the rules a tutor should already follow

Specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson. A tutoring provider that offers them as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material, and where a paper has not yet been released it is a malpractice exposure as well. The correct practice is to reference the document, cite the official address, and link out so that a parent reads the real thing. Everything factual on this page about papers and series comes from the boards' own published guidance and should be confirmed there.

On coursework the line is about who produced the sentences. A tutor may teach the content, explain the assessment criteria in the board's own wording, show how a comparable task is approached, read a draft the student has written and name where it falls short, and teach the student to fix it. A tutor may not write the coursework, draft the assignment, or edit a piece to completion so that the words become theirs. This search result contains pages selling finished assessed work outright, and the consequence of that falls on the candidate.

A useful test at the trial-lesson stage is to ask what they would do if your child asked them to write one paragraph of a coursework draft. The right answer is a refusal and a description of what they would do instead. An answer that treats it as negotiable tells you precisely what will happen in the week before the deadline, when the pressure is real and the parent is not in the room.

A statement on this site's own position, since the phrase circulates freely in this market. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered by Cambridge International, Pearson, the International Baccalaureate, the Ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Department of Education and Knowledge or the Sharjah Private Education Authority. It holds none of those relationships, claims none, and operates no premises in the UAE. Naming a regulator and explaining what it does is useful; implying an endorsement is not.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Sakamkam

Sakamkam and the districts around it, compared on the two things that change a tutoring plan: when the child is actually home, and whether a local specialist exists at the tier required.

Sakamkam

Inland and north-west of the city, closer to the mountain edge. The afternoon return from the coastal schools is the longest of the inner districts, so realistic session starts sit around 17:30 and a fixed slot beats a flexible one.

Fujairah City centre

Holds most of the emirate's private-school capacity and the widest local subject range, which is still narrow measured against Dubai or Sharjah. Short commutes make earlier session times workable for students schooling here.

Al Faseel

Coastal, near the corniche and the port, roughly fifteen minutes from the city schools. Earlier starts are achievable than in Sakamkam, and that timing difference is the only practical distinction between the two districts for tutoring.

Merashid

Established residential area where demand concentrates on Extended-tier sciences and mathematics. That band is where Fujairah's specialist supply is thinnest, so changing format does more than changing district.

Al Gurfa

South along the coast road and more dispersed, often with two separate school runs per family. Neither child tends to be home before 16:00, so sessions settle into the 17:00 to 20:00 window.

Dibba Al Fujairah

Around ninety minutes north, with the fewest local secondary options in the emirate. Online delivery there is the only practical route to an Extended-tier subject specialist rather than one option among several.

Khor Fakkan

A Sharjah enclave on the Fujairah coastline, so its private schools answer to the Sharjah Private Education Authority rather than the federal Ministry of Education that supervises Fujairah's schools.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sakamkam

Fujairah city and the inland districts

Private-school capacity sits in and around the city, within reach of Sakamkam, Al Faseel and Merashid. The licensed list is short and changes, so confirm it against the Ministry of Education's own directory rather than any third-party page including this one.

  • Our Own English High School, Fujairah
  • Fujairah Private Academy
  • Al Ameer English School, Fujairah

Sharjah options within commuting range

Families wanting a wider IGCSE offer look west and north. Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods rather than only inspecting, which is worth reading before any mid-year move is committed to.

  • Sharjah English School
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Australian International School, Sharjah
  • Delhi Private School, Sharjah

Schools are named purely as context for the Fujairah and wider UAE school system. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus code from the school first

It sits on the entry confirmation and the exams officer can give it to you in a sentence. The code decides the papers, the tiering language and whether a practical exam exists. Matching on subject name alone is how a term of alternative-to-practical preparation gets spent by a candidate who is not sitting that component.

  2. 02

Confirm the tier and the component in writing

Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher, practical test or alternative paper. Ask before the entry deadline rather than after the mock, because entries close months ahead of the paper and a tier decision taken on Year 9 evidence is easier to revisit in Year 10 than in Year 11.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, used as a specification test

Ask the tutor which papers your child sits, what each is worth, and the three topics where candidates at that tier lose the most marks. A specialist answers in under a minute. Your child's verdict on whether they could follow the explanation is the other half of the decision.

  4. 04

Diagnostic paper in the first fortnight

A full past paper under timing, marked against the official scheme, returned with every lost mark attributed to one of six causes. This is the document the plan should be built from, and it is the thing to ask for if you want to know what you are paying for rather than hoping.

  5. 05

Fixed weekly slot, with Ramadan planned in advance

Sessions run at the same time each week on Gulf Standard Time, after the Sakamkam school run. During Ramadan the slot usually moves later, often post-Iftar, agreed a week ahead so the work set between sessions still gets marked rather than being dropped in the shuffle.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by code, not by subject name

Cambridge 0620 and Edexcel 4CH1 are both Chemistry and are assessed differently enough that the preparation diverges. Matching on the code is a small administrative step that prevents the most expensive mistake available in IGCSE tutoring, and almost nobody in this market asks for it up front.

Weightings drive where the hours go

A theory paper at fifty per cent and a practical component at twenty deserve different amounts of attention, and the published figures are the only honest basis for that decision. They are printed here in full because most families have never been shown them.

A short, specific loss list instead of general revision

Marked scripts usually show four to seven topics carrying most of the lost marks, and the same ones recur across cohorts. A diagnostic turns an anxiety into that list. Everything after it is targeted, which is why eight focused weeks can outperform a year of unfocused ones.

The tier decision treated as reversible while it still is

A Core entry removes the top four grades before teaching starts, and it is taken in Year 10 on Year 9 evidence. Evidence from a timed Extended paper is what reopens it. That is a cheaper intervention than a Year 11 scramble and almost nobody tells parents the window exists.

Dirham figures with their sources attached

Every rate here is a published market figure read in October 2026 and attributed as such, never presented as an IB Gram price. Three of the six pages ranking for searches like this publish no price at all and two quote in dollars, which no UAE family pays school fees in.

Board materials referenced, never redistributed

Specifications, papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and a provider handing them out as downloads is reproducing copyrighted material. We cite and link instead, which also means a parent reads the authoritative version rather than somebody's summary of it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sakamkam: your questions answered

How do I find out whether my child's Sakamkam school uses Cambridge or Edexcel?+

Ask the exams officer for the syllabus code on the entry confirmation. Cambridge codes are four digits such as 0580 or 0625; Pearson Edexcel codes look like 4MA1 or 4PH1. Schools choose board by board, so your child can sit Cambridge sciences and Edexcel mathematics in the same certificate set. The code decides which papers are sat, the tiering language and whether a separate practical exam exists, so it is the first question to settle before booking any tutoring.

Does my child sit a practical exam in Sakamkam for IGCSE science?+

It depends entirely on the board. Cambridge science syllabuses carry a practical component worth twenty per cent of the grade, taken either as a practical test or as an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the school chooses which. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences have no separate practical exam at all; practical understanding is examined inside the two written papers. Those are genuinely different preparations, so confirm the component with the school before arranging any tutoring around it.

What is the difference between Cambridge Core and Extended entry?+

Core candidates are assessed on a narrower syllabus and cannot be awarded above grade C. Extended candidates sit harder papers covering the full syllabus and can reach A*. The decision is made by the school, usually in Year 10 on Year 9 evidence, and in a small school market it tends to be cautious because the sets are coarser. What reopens it is evidence: Extended-only content taught, then a timed Extended paper marked against the official scheme and shown to the teacher.

Why does the non-calculator maths paper cause so many lost marks?+

Because students practise almost exclusively with a calculator in hand, then meet a paper worth half the grade where arithmetic fluency is itself examined. The content is not harder; the conditions are. Marks go on fraction work, surds, percentage calculations and estimation that the student can do with a calculator and cannot do without one. Splitting practice deliberately between the two papers is a small change in habit with a disproportionate return across the whole grade.

How many past papers should a Sakamkam student actually do?+

Fewer than you would expect, used properly. Sitting a paper under genuine timing, marking it against the official scheme rather than a model answer, and attributing every lost mark to one of six causes is worth more than five papers worked through casually. The six causes are content not known, content not recalled under pressure, question misread, command term misread, method not written, and time. They need different remedies, which is why volume alone changes little.

Which IGCSE subjects are hardest to staff with a specialist in Fujairah?+

Extended-tier Chemistry and Physics, Economics, Computer Science and Business Studies, with Additional and International Mathematics behind them. The cause is not difficulty but the number of local teachers who have taught that specification recently, and Fujairah's private-school sector is small. Core-tier mathematics, English as a first language and the sciences at Core are comfortable. If your request falls in the first group, ask for a realistic match timeframe rather than an assurance that everything is always available.

Can my child resit a single IGCSE subject without losing a year?+

Usually yes. Both boards run a November series alongside the main summer one, so a single-subject resit is a matter of months rather than a year's wait. The entry is made through the school, and the deadline falls well before the paper. The practical decision is whether to resit the whole subject or only the component that failed, which depends on the board's rules for that specification, so ask the exams officer rather than assuming.

What are the Cambridge timetable zones and do they affect Fujairah candidates?+

Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own version of the timetable, and states it is essential to use the correct version for your zone. It adds that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. The practical risk is a timetable downloaded from a revision forum rather than obtained from the school. Ask your exams officer which zone the centre sits in and use only their version.

Is online IGCSE tutoring effective for a student inland from the Fujairah coast?+

The variable that matters is match rather than format. A travelling generalist who has not taught the specification will not move the grade; a specialist on screen working from marked past papers usually will. Inland from this coast the choice is rarely between two equally qualified people, because at Extended tier in several subjects the local specialist does not exist. Online also holds the slot at the same time weekly, which is the condition the homework cycle between sessions depends on.

How much do IGCSE tutors charge for Fujairah students?+

Market figures read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, in-home visits at AED 180 to 500, and named specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. Monthly estimates for one weekly hour run around AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range. Those are published market rates with their sources named rather than IB Gram prices; a quote follows the free trial lesson.

Should a Year 11 student in Sakamkam start tutoring in two subjects at once?+

Only if the diagnostic in both shows a short, specific loss list rather than gaps across the syllabus. Two subjects means two sessions a week plus the work between them, which is a real load on a student already carrying eight or nine certificates. The alternative that usually works better is sequencing: fix the subject with the shortest loss list first, bank it, then move the hours. Spreading thin is how a term produces two half-improvements.

Do Arabic and Islamic studies count towards the five IGCSE passes for equivalency?+

No. The sourced requirement on the British track is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are specifically not included among those five. They still have to be taught, because private schools in the UAE must cover Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside the licensed curriculum. Verify your own case through the Ministry of Education's own channel rather than any tutoring site.

What should I ask for after a month of sessions in Sakamkam?+

The updated loss list from the diagnostic, with each item marked closed, improving or unchanged, and the marked work it rests on. An item that has not moved in three weeks is the conversation to have rather than something to wait out. Progress at IGCSE is visible as marks on marked scripts under timing. Anything reported only as improved confidence or better engagement is not yet evidence that a grade is moving.

Can lessons shift during Ramadan or while the family travels from Fujairah?+

Yes, and planning the change works better than improvising it. Most families move the slot later during Ramadan, often to a post-Iftar time, and because the lesson is online nothing depends on a tutor's journey. Travel is handled as a one-off time adjustment rather than a cancelled term. Agree the change a week in advance so the work set before it still gets marked before the next session instead of being quietly dropped.

Get the code, then book one trial lesson

For a Sakamkam family the first step is a single question to the school: which syllabus code, which tier, and for the Cambridge sciences, practical test or alternative paper. With those three facts a match is possible and a plan can be built; without them the first two sessions go on discovery. Then take a free trial lesson and ask the tutor which papers your child sits and what each is worth. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, after the school day. Nobody is sent to a Sakamkam address, and every rate quoted here is a published market figure with its source named.
