IGCSE Tutor near me in Dubai

When a parent types 'IGCSE tutor near me' into Google from Dubai, the search engine answers a question about distance. The question that was actually being asked is about fit: has this person taught the paper my child will sit, at the tier they are entered for, and can they take a 6pm slot in term time? This page works through what proximity buys in Dubai, what it costs in minutes, and which IGCSE subjects simply cannot be staffed inside one community. Lessons are delivered online.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Distance is the wrong filter, and Dubai makes that unusually obvious

A proximity search is a sensible instinct applied to the wrong problem. It makes sense for a dentist, a barber or a car service, where the thing you need is interchangeable and the journey is the only real cost. It makes much less sense for IGCSE support, because the thing you need is not interchangeable at all. A tutor who has taught Cambridge 0620 Chemistry at Extended tier for six years and a tutor who did A Level Chemistry themselves are both 'a chemistry tutor', and they are not substitutes.

Dubai sharpens the point. The emirate has 227 private schools running 17 different curricula, and families routinely live in one district while their child attends school in another. A household in Mirdif may send a child to a school in Al Barsha; a family in Dubai Marina may be at a school in Nad Al Sheba. There is no stable relationship between where you live, where your child studies and where a competent tutor for one specific specification happens to sit. Searching by distance filters on the one variable that has the least to do with the outcome.

The cost of insisting on proximity is measurable, and it is paid in minutes. A round trip across Dubai at five in the afternoon is routinely forty to ninety minutes depending on the pair of districts involved. Over a school year of weekly sessions that is between twenty-five and sixty hours spent in a car, by either the tutor or the student. Somebody pays for that time - it is the main reason in-home visits are advertised at AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified tutor working online.

There is a second, less obvious cost. A proximity-first search narrows the pool before the subject is even considered, which means the binding constraint becomes 'who is nearby and free' rather than 'who has taught this paper'. For well-staffed subjects that is survivable. For Additional Mathematics, Further Pure Mathematics, Computer Science at the top end or a less commonly entered language, it produces either nobody or somebody unsuitable, and the family concludes that no help exists when what does not exist is a nearby version of it.

IB Gram arranges UAE tuition as one-to-one lessons delivered live over video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to addresses in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. This page is not an argument that proximity never matters - for some children the presence of an adult in the room is the whole intervention, and that is a real preference. It is an argument that in Dubai, for IGCSE specifically, distance is the variable to drop first.

At a glance

  • A proximity search filters on the variable least related to the result
  • Dubai families routinely live and study in different districts
  • A weekly cross-city round trip costs 25 to 60 hours over a school year
  • Travel is the main reason in-home rates run AED 180-500 against AED 150-300 online
  • Thinly taught specifications cannot be staffed inside one community at all
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What a family should be searching for changes with the stage, because the scarcity of suitable tutors changes. These are the four points at which Dubai parents start looking.

EARLYAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9, before the IGCSE course starts

The easiest stage to staff locally, because the content is widely taught and almost any competent mathematician or scientist can deliver it. If proximity genuinely matters to your household, this is the stage where insisting on it costs you least in quality. Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October give the first external signal.

This is also when Dubai's mid-year arrivals surface. A student joining a British-curriculum school from another system in Year 8 or 9 usually has the content and not the written-examination convention, and that gap is cheap to close now and expensive to close in Year 11.

COREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Core and Foundation tier

Reasonably well staffed across the city, since the content subset is narrower and the question styles are more predictable. A family here has genuine choice and can weigh preference about format against specification experience without one of the options vanishing.

Worth knowing before you choose a tutor on convenience: the lower tier caps the grade available on tiered specifications. If the sixth-form plan needs a top grade in that subject, the conversation to have is with the school about tier, not with a tutor about hours.

EXTAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Extended and Higher tier

Where the local pool thins noticeably. Extension content - vectors and transformations in mathematics, limiting reagents and yield in chemistry, induction in physics - needs a tutor who has taught it to examination standard rather than one who met it at school. The honest search term is the specification code, not the district.

In practice this is the tier at which Dubai families who insisted on proximity come back having had two unsatisfactory terms. The second search is usually by subject, and it succeeds.

RAREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Thinly entered specifications

Additional Mathematics, Further Pure Mathematics, the top end of Computer Science, and languages entered by a handful of schools. These cannot be staffed by district in any city, let alone one community within it. There may be a small number of people in the whole UAE who have taught the paper, and they will not be within a twenty-minute drive of most households.

This is the clearest case for dropping distance entirely. If your child is entered for one of these, the question is not who is nearby but whether anyone at all is free, and we will give you a straight answer including when the answer is no.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each note states how deep the local pool tends to be in Dubai and what that means for a family searching by area. Availability, not difficulty, is the variable here.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core/Extended · Edexcel 4MA1 Foundation/Higher

The deepest pool in the city at both tiers, which is why a proximity search usually succeeds here and why families generalise from it. Note the board difference: a tutor fluent in 0580 is not automatically fluent in 4MA1 paper structure, and that distinction survives however close they live.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Edexcel 4PH1

Good general availability, thinner once the Alternative to Practical paper is specified. Ask any candidate tutor what that paper rewards before anything else; the answer sorts the pool faster than any credential check and is independent of location.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Edexcel 4CH1

Reasonable availability at Core, noticeably thinner at Extended where mole calculations with limiting reagents and percentage yield sit. A family in an outlying community searching by distance at Extended tier will often find nobody and conclude wrongly that nobody exists.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Edexcel 4BI1

Wide availability across Dubai. The useful filter is not proximity but whether the tutor teaches command-term discipline, since that is where most of the marks go in this subject rather than in content recall.

Additional Mathematics

Single tier, few centres

The scarcest IGCSE specification in the market. Entered by a minority of Dubai schools, taught to examination standard by very few people, and essentially impossible to staff within one district. Any family searching for this by area is searching for something that is not there.

Further Pure Mathematics

Pearson, single tier

Equally thin, and frequently confused with Additional Mathematics by both parents and tutors. Confirm the specification code before accepting a match, because a tutor who prepared students for one will not necessarily know the paper structure of the other.

English as a First Language

Cambridge 0500 · Edexcel 4EA1

Very wide availability and the widest variation in actual usefulness. A proximity search here returns many people, most of whom teach writing rather than the mark tariffs on the summary and directed-writing tasks. Ask which, because only the second moves the grade.

English as a Second Language

Cambridge 0510 and 0511

Strong availability in Dubai, with the practical issue being whether the tutor knows the 0510 and 0511 task shapes rather than general language teaching. Students transferred between 0510 and 0500 mid-course need the specific reading-paper work, which is a narrower skill.

Business Studies and Economics

Cambridge 0450 and 0455 · Edexcel 4BS1 and 4EC1

Good availability, and unusually portable: the application and evaluation habits these subjects need are the same wherever the tutor sits. Economics diagram conventions are the one thing to check, since they are drilled rather than discussed.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Edexcel equivalents

Plentiful at first glance and thin where it matters. Programmers are everywhere in Dubai's technology districts; tutors who can teach the board's own pseudocode convention and a ruled trace table are not. Verify the second, and ignore where they live.

Arabic as a First or Additional Language

First-language and additional-language routes

Demand is structural because KHDA requires Arabic in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. Evening slots are the binding constraint rather than geography, and they go early in the term.

Geography and History

Cambridge 0460 and 0470 · Edexcel equivalents

Moderate availability. The skill to check is source interrogation and provenance use rather than case-study knowledge, since that is where the upper bands are awarded. It is also entirely teachable on a shared screen with the resource on it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families use these sessions. All are live video; IB Gram does not attend addresses in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE.

Weekly one-to-one on a named specification

The standard arrangement: one or two fixed slots a week with a tutor matched to the board, code and tier on the entry form. Because there is no journey, the slot can sit at 7pm or 8pm without the session becoming the end of a two-hour excursion.

  • Tutor confirmed against the specification before the first lesson
  • Slot chosen around the real school and commute pattern
  • No travel buffer on either side
  • Replacement arranged if the match is wrong, without a penalty

Household sessions for two children

Two children in the same home, taught separately back to back or together where they share the specification and tier. A single evening handles both, which is the practical answer families in large eastern and outlying districts used to solve with one very long car journey.

  • Back-to-back slots, or a paired session where the papers match
  • Per-student cost falls when a genuine pair is possible
  • One session note per child regardless of format
  • Scheduling built around a single household evening

Short notice and travel-period cover

Sessions that follow the family rather than the address: a week in another time zone, a term split across two countries, or cover during a school closure. The arrangement does not break when the household moves, which a locally-tied tutor arrangement always does.

  • Session timing re-based to the family's current time zone
  • Works across a move between emirates or countries
  • Files and session notes travel with the student
  • Useful during Ramadan when routines shift to post-Iftar

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The commute arithmetic, in minutes rather than adjectives

The cost of proximity is normally discussed as convenience, which hides it. Put it in minutes and it becomes a number a family can weigh against the alternative. A weekly session with a twenty-minute drive each way costs forty minutes per session - a little over twenty-five hours across a school year of thirty-eight weeks. The same session with a forty-five-minute crawl along Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road at five in the afternoon costs ninety minutes, which is nearly sixty hours.

Those hours are not evenly distributed either. They land precisely in the window where a Year 11 is least able to afford them: between the end of the school day and the point where concentration gives out. A student who arrives at a session having spent forty-five minutes in a car is not the same student who starts a session from their own desk, and the first twenty minutes of the lesson are often spent recovering rather than working.

Someone pays for the tutor's half of the journey too, and the market prices it openly. Qualified subject tutors working online are advertised at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour. In-home one-to-one visits with travel included run approximately AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate's Dubai rate guide putting them at AED 180-350 and independent home tutors advertising AED 200-500. The difference between those bands is substantially the car.

The table below sets out realistic early-evening journey times between Dubai district pairs that come up constantly in this search. They are indicative rather than measured, and any Dubai resident will have their own worse example. The point is the order of magnitude: the travel component of an in-person arrangement is usually larger than the teaching component of the problem it was meant to solve.

Pool by area against pool by subject

Two different pools are involved in any tutoring search and conflating them is what makes a proximity search feel disappointing. The first pool is geographic: who teaches privately within a reasonable journey of your community. The second is technical: who has taught the specific specification and tier your child is entered for, anywhere. For common subjects the two pools overlap enough that the distinction never surfaces. For the rest, the overlap is close to empty.

The table below sets out roughly how deep each pool runs by subject, based on which specifications Dubai schools enter and how widely each is taught. Read the final column as the practical consequence of filtering by distance first - in several rows the result is not a worse tutor but no tutor, followed by a family concluding that help is unavailable.

What makes this worth writing down is that the subjects most likely to need help are disproportionately in the thin rows. A student struggling in Year 10 Biology has a wide choice. A student struggling with Additional Mathematics has, in any one Dubai district, essentially none - and that student is also the one for whom a term of unsuitable teaching does the most damage, because the content moves fast and the gap compounds.

The honest version of availability includes saying when it runs out. Mathematics, the three separate sciences, English in both specifications, Business Studies, Economics and Geography are well covered at both tiers and on both boards. Additional Mathematics, Further Pure Mathematics, upper-end Computer Science and the less commonly entered languages are thin everywhere, and in those cases the options are a wait for the right person, a different session pattern, or a recommendation to look elsewhere.

How to check that a tutor may legally teach privately in the UAE

This is the question almost nobody in the search results answers, and it is one of the few that has a documented answer. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

The application route is MoHRE's own: the service is listed as 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' on mohre.gov.ae, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system, with a two-working-day completion time and no fees. Because it is free and quick, a tutor has no good reason not to hold one, and asking to see it is a reasonable request rather than an accusation.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published - press reporting on the rules notes that the ministry did not specify amounts or detail the penalties - so a specific figure quoted at you online has not been verified and should not be relied on. The relevant fact for a parent is simply that the permit exists and is checkable.

One further point applies to teachers. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. That is press-reported and worth verifying against the current policy document, but the direction is clear enough that 'your child's own teacher, privately' is a request a family should not make.

Scheduling around the Dubai school run, traffic and the week

  • Outlying communities: 7pm is the realistic start, not 4:30pm
  • Short school runs in apartment districts: 4:30pm is usually better
  • Friday mornings are the best slot in the week for timed papers
  • Ramadan moves sessions post-Iftar; a video slot moves for free

Dubai's school day starts early - a 7:20 or 7:30am register is common - and secondary students in outlying communities are on a bus before seven. That sets the limit on how late a session can usefully run, and it is the reason a 9pm slot is a bad idea in February however convenient it looks in the diary.

The other constraint is the afternoon. Between about 4:30pm and 6:30pm the main corridors are at their worst, and in several communities the student is still in transit. For a household in Serena, Town Square or Mudon the realistic start is 7pm. For an apartment family in Dubai Marina or Business Bay with a short school run, 4:30pm works and is often the better slot because the student is not yet tired.

The weekend shape matters too. With Friday part of the weekend in Dubai, a Friday morning session is a genuinely good option for timed-paper work: the student is rested, there is no school day on either side, and a full ninety minutes under exam conditions is possible in a way it never is on a Tuesday evening. Families rarely consider it and those who do tend to keep it.

Ramadan reshapes everything for a month. The school day shortens, routines move, and the slot that worked in January becomes the worst available. The practical answer is a post-Iftar window, slightly shorter sessions, and treating the fortnight around Eid as consolidation rather than new content. Because the session is delivered over video, moving the slot costs nothing more than a message - which is not true of an arrangement built around someone's drive.

05

When your child's school is nowhere near your home

A substantial share of Dubai families drive past two or three schools to reach the one their child attends. That is a rational outcome of choosing a school on curriculum, inspection record, sibling places or availability rather than on distance - and it quietly breaks the logic of a proximity search, because the relevant community is arguably the school's, not the home's.

It also means the useful local knowledge a tutor might have is about the school rather than the neighbourhood. Which board the school enters for each subject. When its mock windows fall. Whether it runs coursework components. What its sixth form requires at IGCSE before admitting a student to a given A Level or Higher Level course. None of that requires living nearby; all of it requires asking the family the right questions at the start.

The questions worth bringing to a first conversation are therefore school-specific rather than area-specific: the name of the school, the board and code per subject, the tier, the mock dates, and the sixth-form entry bars if the family has them in writing. A tutor who takes those down and plans against them is doing the thing people imagine a 'local' tutor does automatically, and most local tutors do not.

There is one genuinely local factor that matters, and it is the commute, which the previous section covered in minutes. If your child spends fifty minutes on a bus each way, their available study time is materially smaller than a classmate's who walks, and a plan that ignores that will fail for reasons nobody will diagnose correctly.

06

Safeguarding: who is in the room and what a parent can see

  • Sessions on a named platform, never a personal messaging app
  • Identity known to the provider, not just to a listing
  • Contact with the student through the platform or the parent
  • A stated purpose and a deletion route for any data collected about a minor

Families comparing an in-person tutor with an online one often raise supervision, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. With a video session, a parent can be present without being in the way: the room is your own, the door can be open, the audio is audible from the next room, and nothing about the arrangement requires an adult the family has not met to be inside the house.

The practical standards worth insisting on from any provider, in either format, are the same. Sessions happen on a named platform rather than a personal messaging app. The tutor's identity is known to the provider, not merely to a marketplace listing. Communication with the student goes through the platform or through the parent rather than through private channels. And there is a clear route to raise a concern that does not involve messaging the tutor.

Session notes contribute here too. A dated written note after every lesson gives a parent a continuous, reviewable account of what happened without sitting in. That is a stronger form of oversight than occasional presence in a living room, and it is the main reason we treat notes as part of the service rather than a courtesy.

Data matters as well. Lead forms for tutoring collect personal information about a minor, and the UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection sits behind that. A provider should be able to tell you what is collected, why, how long it is kept and how to have it deleted, and should not be asking for a child's school, grades and photograph without a stated purpose. Ask; the answer is informative either way.

07

What the first session covers when there is nothing to send

Ideally a family arrives with a marked mock paper and an exam entry statement. Frequently they arrive with neither, because the search began at eleven at night after a bad report. That is a workable starting point and it changes the shape of the first session rather than its usefulness.

Without prior work, the session begins by generating some. Twenty to thirty minutes of timed questions from a real past paper on the correct specification, chosen to span the topics the student should have met by this point in the year. The tutor says nothing during it. Then the marking happens on screen, strictly to the published scheme, with every lost mark labelled by cause rather than simply counted.

What comes out is the same deliverable a marked mock would have produced: a ranked list of what is costing marks, and a first target. For a parent, the value is that it is specific - not 'needs to work on algebra' but 'eleven marks lost, five to unwritten method, three to command terms, two to units, one to a named topic gap'. That is actionable with or without further sessions.

The reason this is easy over video and awkward in a living room is mundane. On screen, the paper, the mark scheme, the annotation and a visible timer occupy one window, and the whole thing is saved as a dated file that can be compared with the next one in six weeks. A sheet of paper handed over at the end of a visit does not get compared with anything.

08

Getting started, and what happens if the match is wrong

  • Send school, board, code, tier and two realistic time windows
  • A marked mock script outperforms any description of the problem
  • Ask for the replacement policy in writing before the first paid session
  • Live video on Gulf Standard Time; no UAE home attendance

Send four things: the school, the subject with its board and syllabus code, the tier, and two time windows that genuinely survive a Dubai school week. If you have a marked mock script, send that too and it will do more work than anything you write. Nothing on that list is your home district, which is the point of this page.

Then take the free trial lesson, and use it to test specification knowledge rather than warmth. Ask what the papers are worth on that code, where candidates lose marks on the particular paper your child sits, and what the first four weeks would attack. Someone who has taught the paper answers in particulars. Someone who has taught the subject answers in generalities.

If the match is wrong, say so early and we will change it. The commonest reason a match fails is not competence but pace or manner, and a fifteen-year-old usually knows within two sessions. A provider that makes changing a tutor awkward is optimising for its own diary. Ask about the replacement policy before you book rather than after, and get the answer in writing with the cancellation terms.

To be unambiguous about delivery: these are live one-to-one video sessions on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, and home visits are a service we provide only in India. The trade is explicit - you give up a person in the room, and you gain a person who has actually taught the paper your child will open in the exam hall, with no part of the hour spent on Al Khail Road.

Where we tutor

Dubai districts, and what a proximity search returns from each

These notes describe the search problem from each district - how far the realistic drive is, and which subjects tend to be missing locally. They are not a list of where tutors live, because sessions are delivered over video.

Al Mizhar and Al Twar

Eastern districts where a drive to a tutor in Jumeirah or Al Barsha is forty minutes outbound at five in the afternoon. Proximity searches here return general tutors and almost nothing at Extended tier in the sciences.

Al Rashidiya and Nad Al Hamar

Close to the airport corridor, with heavy early-evening traffic on the Dubai-Sharjah axis. Families here report the longest gap between what a local search offers and what their child's specification needs.

Jumeirah Islands and The Lakes

Low-density villa communities with few commercial services inside them, so any in-person arrangement means a drive in both directions. The subject requests are typically Extended maths and separate sciences.

Living Legends and Dubailand

Outlying communities where the nearest cluster of tutors is twenty-five minutes away without traffic and considerably more with it. Younger cohorts, so requests skew to Years 9 and 10.

Serena and Mudon

Newer family communities along the Al Qudra corridor, with long single-direction commutes. A 4:30pm session is impossible here for most secondary students; 7pm is the realistic start.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

Rapidly developing waterfront district with limited local tutoring supply and a growing secondary-age population. Online matching is the only practical route to a specification specialist from here.

Al Barsha and Tecom

One of the densest clusters of both schools and tutors in Dubai, which makes it the district where proximity searches work best - and the reason advice written from here generalises badly to the rest of the city.

Jumeirah Park and Al Furjan

Mixed villa and apartment stock with high residential turnover and frequent mid-course school transfers. The binding need is specification familiarity for a student who has changed board, which no local search can filter for.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Mizhar, Al Twar and Mirdif

Eastern catchments with a wide curriculum mix and long outbound drives to the city's tutoring density. Students we support here most often need Extended-tier science and mathematics work that is not available within a reasonable journey.

  • Uptown International School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • The Indian Academy
  • Al Mizhar American Academy for Girls

The Lakes, The Meadows and Jumeirah Islands

Settled villa communities feeding long-established schools, where the typical request is lifting a 6 to a 7 rather than rescuing a pass. That is specification-specific work, and proximity adds nothing to it.

  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Raffles World Academy
  • GEMS Dubai American Academy

Dubai Creek Harbour, Al Jaddaf and Ras Al Khor

A newer residential belt with a growing secondary population and very little local tutoring supply. Families here were among the first to stop searching by district and start searching by syllabus code.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the four details

School, subject with board and syllabus code, tier, and two time windows that work on a real Dubai school week. Your district is not on the list because it is not used in the match, which is the practical difference between this and a proximity search.

  2. 02

    Shortlist by specification

We shortlist tutors who have taught that code at that tier, then filter by the time windows. Where the specification is thinly taught we will tell you how long the wait is rather than offering a nearby alternative who has not taught the paper.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson

A live one-to-one video session with a short timed question included, so the first conversation rests on something marked rather than on impressions. No card details are taken to book it and no commitment follows automatically.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the commute

The session time is set against the student's actual day: bus time, arrival home, fixtures, and how late concentration lasts given a 7:20am register. Friday mornings are offered for timed-paper work because they are the best slot in a Dubai week.

    Review and replace without friction

A review at four weeks against the error log, and a tutor change on request if pace or manner is wrong. Most failed matches are not about competence, and a provider that makes changing difficult is serving its own diary.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the paper, not the postcode

The shortlist starts from the specification code and tier on the entry form. Distance is not a filter, which is why thinly taught subjects like Additional Mathematics are reachable at all.

No hours lost to the car

A weekly cross-city round trip costs between twenty-five and sixty hours over a Dubai school year, landing in exactly the window a Year 11 cannot spare. A video session costs none of it.

The permit question answered

We explain the MoHRE private tuition work permit, its two-year free-of-charge validity and the code of conduct around own-school students, and we point you to the official application page rather than summarising it as our own credential.

School-specific rather than area-specific knowledge

Mock windows, board per subject, coursework components and sixth-form entry bars are what a tutor actually needs to know about your child's school. None of that requires living nearby.

Supervision without an unfamiliar adult indoors

The room is yours, the door can stay open, the platform is named, and a dated session note gives you a reviewable account of every lesson without sitting in on it.

Straight answers about scarcity

Where no suitable specialist is free, you get told that rather than offered a nearby substitute. Filling a slot with a willing generalist costs a term, and a Year 11 does not have one to spend.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why does searching for an IGCSE tutor near me in Dubai return so few genuine matches?+

Because the search filters on distance, which is the variable least connected to the outcome. Dubai has 227 private schools across 17 curricula, families routinely live in one district and study in another, and there is no stable relationship between your postcode and where someone who has taught Cambridge 0620 at Extended tier happens to live. For well-staffed subjects the two pools overlap enough that you never notice. For Extended-tier sciences, Additional Mathematics or upper-end Computer Science, filtering by area first returns nobody, which parents reasonably misread as no help existing.

Does living close to a tutor actually make any difference to an IGCSE grade?+

Not to the grade, in our experience, though it can matter to the child. Proximity buys the presence of an adult in the room, which for some students - particularly younger ones, or those who genuinely cannot start work without supervision - is the whole intervention. What it does not buy is specification knowledge, mark-scheme literacy or familiarity with the Alternative to Practical paper, and those are what move marks. If presence is the need, say so and choose accordingly. If marks are the need, drop distance first.

How long is the round trip to a tutor across Dubai at five in the afternoon?+

Commonly between fifty and a hundred and ten minutes depending on the district pair. Mirdif to Al Barsha is typically thirty-five to fifty minutes outbound; Al Qusais to Jumeirah can be fifty-five. Over a thirty-eight week school year a weekly cross-city session costs somewhere between twenty-five and seventy hours in a car, and those hours land in the exact window between the school day and the end of useful concentration. A student arriving from forty-five minutes of traffic also spends the first part of the lesson recovering.

Which IGCSE subjects are genuinely hard to find a tutor for in my part of Dubai?+

Additional Mathematics and Further Pure Mathematics are the clearest cases - entered by a minority of schools, taught to examination standard by very few people, and effectively impossible to staff within one district. Extended-tier Chemistry is thin outside the dense districts of Al Barsha and Tecom. Physics with the Alternative to Practical paper is thinner than it looks, because many tutors know the content and not that paper. Upper-end Computer Science is thin for a related reason: programmers are plentiful, teachers of the board's pseudocode convention are not.

How can I check that a tutor in Dubai is legally permitted to teach privately?+

Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit. It was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The application route is MoHRE's own service, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', with a two-working-day completion time and no fees. Since it costs nothing and takes two days, there is no good reason for a UAE-based tutor not to hold one.

My child's school is in a different part of Dubai from our home - how should we time sessions?+

Work backwards from the bus rather than from the school bell. A student on a fifty-minute bus each way has materially less usable study time than a classmate who walks, and a plan that ignores that will fail for reasons nobody diagnoses correctly. For outlying communities such as Serena, Town Square or Mudon, 7pm is the realistic start. For short school runs in apartment districts, 4:30pm is usually better because the student is not yet tired. Friday mornings are the best slot in a Dubai week for timed-paper work.

Is hiring a teacher from my child's own school as a private tutor a good idea?+

No, and in parts of the UAE it is prohibited. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi bar paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Treat the ADEK position as press-reported and verify it against the current policy document, but the direction is unambiguous. Beyond the rules, it creates an obvious conflict around internal assessment decisions that no family benefits from.

What should I be able to see or hear during an online tutoring session?+

Everything you want to. The room is your own, the door can stay open and the audio is audible from the next room, so supervision is available without an adult you have not met being inside the house. Insist on the same standards in either format: sessions on a named platform rather than a personal messaging app, the tutor's identity known to the provider, contact with the student routed through the platform or through you, and a clear route to raise a concern that does not involve messaging the tutor.

Can two children in the same household share one tutoring arrangement?+

Yes, in two ways. Back-to-back individual slots on the same evening is the usual arrangement and keeps each child's session directed by their own error log. A genuinely paired session works where both children are on the same specification, the same tier and roughly the same standing, and it brings the per-student cost down materially in exchange for roughly half the direct attention each. It works well for timed-paper practice and badly where the two have different gaps, which is the more common case with siblings.

We are moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi mid-course - does the tutoring arrangement survive?+

The tutoring does, because nothing about it is tied to an address. The same tutor, the same slot and the same error log continue, which is not true of any arrangement built around someone's drive. What changes is the school context: Abu Dhabi private schools are regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge rather than KHDA, the new school may enter a different board for a subject, and its mock windows and sixth-form entry bars will differ. Send the new entry statement as soon as you have it and the plan is adjusted to it.

How quickly can a tutor be matched once I send the details?+

For well-covered subjects - Mathematics, the three separate sciences, English in both specifications, Business Studies, Economics, Geography - a match on the correct specification is usually possible within a few working days once we have the code, the tier and two workable time windows. For thin specifications it takes longer and sometimes it cannot be done at all in the window you need. You will be told which of those applies rather than offered a nearby alternative who has not taught the paper.

Does IB Gram have tutors living in my area of Dubai?+

That is not how the match works, and it is deliberate. IB Gram delivers UAE tuition as live one-to-one video sessions on Gulf Standard Time, and does not send tutors to addresses in Dubai or anywhere else in the country - in-home tutoring is a service we operate only in India. Tutors are selected for the board, syllabus code and tier your child is entered for, which is why a household in Dubai Creek Harbour or Al Mizhar gets the same access to a specialist as one in Al Barsha, where the local pool is deepest.

What does a first session cover if we have no marked work to send?+

It generates some. Twenty to thirty minutes of timed questions from a real past paper on the correct specification, spanning the topics the student should have met by that point in the year, with the tutor saying nothing while the clock runs. Then the marking happens on screen, strictly to the published scheme, with every lost mark labelled by cause. The output is the same as a marked mock would have given you: a ranked list of what is costing marks and a first target, specific enough to act on with or without further sessions.

Can sessions be scheduled around prayer times, Friday and Ramadan?+

Yes, and they should be. With Friday part of the Dubai weekend, a Friday morning session is the best slot in the week for a full timed paper - the student is rested and there is no school day either side. Around prayer times the slot is simply set to avoid them. During Ramadan the school day shortens and routines move, so sessions shift to a post-Iftar window, run slightly shorter, and the fortnight around Eid becomes consolidation rather than new content. Moving a video slot costs nothing beyond a message.

What happens if the first tutor turns out not to be the right match?+

Tell us early and we change it. Most failed matches are about pace or manner rather than competence, and a fifteen-year-old usually knows within two sessions. The thing to establish before you book - with us or anyone else - is the replacement policy in writing, alongside the cancellation window in hours and whether the quoted rate is per hour or per lesson. A provider that makes a tutor change awkward is optimising for its own diary rather than for your child's term.

Search by syllabus code, not by district

If you came here having typed 'IGCSE tutor near me' from somewhere in Dubai, the most useful thing this page can do is change the search. Send the school, the board and syllabus code, the tier and two time windows that genuinely survive a Dubai school week, and the shortlist will be people who have taught that paper rather than people who live nearby. Take the free trial lesson, ask where candidates lose marks on that specific paper, and ask for the replacement policy in writing. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
