IB Tutors in Dubai, Subject Group by Subject Group

Most families searching for IB tutors in Dubai do not need one tutor. They need a Chemistry HL specialist who knows where the Paper 2 extended-response marks go, and a Maths AA tutor who can tell whether the problem is algebra or exam timing. This page is organised the way the Diploma is organised, by subject group, by paper, by the marks each component carries. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the first one is free.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Six subject groups, six different problems to solve

A Diploma candidate in Dubai carries six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The six are not six versions of the same task. Group 1 asks for a sustained literary argument under timed conditions. Group 4 asks for precise manipulation of data and a 10-hour individual investigation written to five criteria. Group 5 asks for fluent algebraic technique and a calculator paper that punishes rounding. A parent who books one generalist for all of it has bought the average of six different jobs.

That is why the plural in this search matters. Families type IB tutors in Dubai because they have worked out, usually around the first set of DP1 reports, that the Chemistry problem and the English problem are unrelated. The Chemistry grade is sitting at 4 because the pupil cannot read a Paper 1 multiple-choice stem for the trick in it. The English grade is sitting at 4 because the Paper 2 comparative essay keeps describing two texts instead of comparing them. Those need two different people and two different fixes.

Dubai makes the specialist match harder than it looks. The emirate runs 227 private schools across 17 licensed curricula, and the Diploma is a minority programme inside that market, taken by roughly 7% of the private-school roll. A school may run a single DP cohort of thirty, which means one teacher for Physics HL and SL combined. When that pupil needs help outside class, the pool of people within driving distance who have actually taught Physics HL in the last three years is small. The pool who have taught it online, across every IB school in the emirate, is not.

So the honest structure of this page is diagnostic rather than promotional. Each section below takes a subject group, sets out what its components are worth, and names the specific thing Dubai candidates get wrong in it. If you recognise your child in one of those paragraphs, you now know which specialist to ask for. If you recognise your child in three of them, you know the sequence to book them in, because the Extended Essay deadline and the Group 4 investigation window do not move to suit a tutoring schedule.

Every lesson described here is delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For a Dubai family that trade is usually favourable, because the constraint on quality here has never been the commute. It has been whether anyone within reach has sat in a room marking that exact paper. A Dubai Marina family gets a Chemistry Higher Level specialist instead of whoever happens to live within a twenty-minute drive, and the session that would have been spent in traffic is spent on Paper 1 stems instead.

At a glance

  • Group 1 and 2 problems are argument-shape problems, not vocabulary problems
  • Group 3 marks are lost on command terms: evaluate, examine, to what extent
  • Group 4 internal assessment is marked to five criteria out of 24 marks total
  • Group 5 splits into Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation
  • Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together carry up to 3 bonus points
  • Subject-by-subject diagnosis takes one session; it does not need a term
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IB Gram covers the full continuum, but a Dubai family usually arrives at one specific hinge: the move up into the next programme, where the assessment style changes faster than the content does. Each entry below names the hinge rather than restating the programme brochure.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP assesses through inquiry units and portfolio evidence rather than papers, which is why a parent often cannot tell whether a Year 5 pupil is actually behind. The signals worth watching are written fluency under time pressure and number sense without a calculator. Tutoring at this stage is mostly about building the mechanical skills the PYP does not drill, so they are in place when MYP starts marking to criteria.

Dubai PYP cohorts are unusually multilingual, and KHDA additionally requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab pupils. That means a Dubai Year 5 timetable carries mandatory subjects a PYP parent elsewhere never meets, and those are frequently the lessons where a child quietly disengages first.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP introduces criterion-referenced marking out of 8 per criterion, and this is where confident primary pupils start losing marks for reasons nobody explains to them. A strong answer that ignores criterion wording scores 4. Sciences mark Criterion B inquiring and designing, Criterion C processing and evaluating, Criterion D reflecting on the impacts of science. Learning to read a criterion strand is a skill, and it is taught in about three sessions.

Several Dubai schools run MYP to Year 9 and then switch to IGCSE for Years 10 and 11 before the Diploma. Families often discover this mid-year. The switch costs a term of adjustment because IGCSE marks content recall and MYP marks process, so a pupil used to rewarding reflection suddenly finds nobody is marking it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma is scored out of 45: six subjects at up to 7 each, plus up to 3 points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix. Internal assessment usually carries 20-25% of a subject grade and is finished months before the exams, so a DP1 pupil who neglects it is spending DP2 repairing something already banked. Tutoring that starts with the internal assessment timeline rather than the exam date tends to buy more marks.

Dubai DP candidates sit the May session, in line with the northern academic year most private schools here follow. Confirm your own dates with the school's DP coordinator or the IB directly, because session windows and upload deadlines are set by the IB and revised, and no date on this page should be treated as the authority.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs at least two DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. It is far less common than the Diploma, and for the right pupil it removes the dead weight of two subjects they will never use. The DP courses inside a CP are marked identically to any other DP course, so subject tutoring for a CP candidate is the same work at the same standard.

Only a handful of Dubai schools license the Career-related Programme, so CP candidates in the emirate frequently cannot find a peer group, let alone a specialist tutor, inside their own area. This is the clearest case in the emirate for an online match: the subject pool is national rather than local.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the Diploma subjects Dubai families request most, each with the thing it is actually marked on. Levels are listed because the HL paper is not the SL paper with harder numbers; in several subjects it is an extra paper with its own skill set.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Rewards algebraic fluency and proof. Paper 1 is calculator-free, which exposes anyone who has been leaning on a GDC for routine manipulation. HL adds Paper 3, a long problem-solving investigation where marks go to candidates who can set up a general case. The exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology-permitted throughout, modelling-heavy, statistics-heavy. Candidates who chose it to avoid algebra often struggle with interpreting regression and chi-squared output in context. Marks are lost in the final sentence of a question, where the answer must be referred back to the real situation rather than left as a number.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Paper 1 multiple choice is a reading test as much as a chemistry test; stems are written to reward candidates who notice conditions. Paper 2 extended response needs equations balanced and states of matter included, which is where easy marks vanish. HL organic mechanisms must show curly arrows starting from a lone pair or a bond, not from an atom.

Physics

HL and SL

The commonest loss is not the physics but the explanation: a question asking candidates to explain wants a causal chain, and a correct final number earns nothing without it. HL adds substantial content in fields and quantum, and the data booklet rewards pupils who have practised locating equations under time pressure rather than memorising them.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-dense and command-term sensitive. Outline, describe, explain and discuss carry different mark ceilings, and candidates routinely write a discuss answer to an outline question and lose time rather than gain marks. Data-based questions in Paper 2 reward careful reference to specific values in the figure provided.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams carry marks of their own: axes labelled, curves labelled, equilibrium shifts shown and referenced in the prose. The internal assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries, each on a different unit of the syllabus and each tied to a published news article within a set age limit. Candidates who pick articles late lose marks to the syllabus-coverage rule.

Business Management

HL and SL

Paper 1 works from a pre-released case study, so the preparation window is known months in advance and badly used by most candidates. Tools such as Ansoff, the BCG matrix and force-field analysis must be applied to the stimulus rather than described. HL carries additional content and a longer, more analytical paper.

Psychology

HL and SL

Marked on the quality of the study used as evidence, not the quantity. A candidate who can state a method, a finding and a limitation for each named study answers SAQs cleanly. Essay questions require evaluation woven into the argument, and the experimental study in internal assessment is marked on the write-up, not the result.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is unseen textual analysis on non-literary texts, and candidates lose marks by summarising content rather than analysing how meaning is constructed. Paper 2 is a comparative essay on studied works, where a genuine point of comparison must drive each paragraph. HL adds the HL essay, a 1,200-1,500 word formal piece of literary or linguistic analysis.

Geography

HL and SL

Case studies are the currency, and vague ones cost marks. A usable case study has a place name, a date, a figure and a consequence. The internal assessment is a fieldwork report, and the strongest predictor of a good mark is a question narrow enough to answer with data the candidate can actually collect.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Pseudocode conventions are examined, and candidates fluent in Python frequently lose marks writing Python where IB pseudocode is required. HL adds abstract data structures and a case study on a set topic published annually. The solution-development internal assessment is marked on documented process as much as on working code.

Theory of Knowledge

Core · all candidates

Assessed by an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title. Candidates lose marks by writing about the objects or the title in general terms rather than making and testing a knowledge claim. Coaching here is Socratic questioning; the thinking and the writing stay the candidate's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of booking cover almost every request that reaches us from Dubai Diploma families. The difference between them is not price but what they are designed to fix, and picking the wrong one wastes a term.

Single-subject weekly slot

One subject, one level, one fixed hour a week with the same specialist. This is the right shape when the problem is diagnosable in one subject and the pupil is otherwise coping. The first session is spent on a marked paper rather than on introductions, so the plan is built from evidence by the end of week one.

  • Same tutor each week, so technique corrections compound
  • Session notes name the component and the criterion worked on
  • Paper-based diagnosis in session one, not a general chat
  • Works best booked 10 or more weeks before a mock

Two-subject paired plan

Two specialists, two slots, one shared plan built around the pupil's internal assessment calendar. Families use this when two HL subjects are both sitting a grade below target. The coordination matters more than the teaching: two tutors both pushing drafting work in the same fortnight will break the pupil's week.

  • Deadlines mapped once, across both subjects, before slots are fixed
  • Alternating intensity so drafting weeks never collide
  • One progress summary covering both subjects
  • Common pairing: a Group 4 science with Maths Analysis and Approaches

Component clinic

A short booked block aimed at one assessment component: a Paper 3 technique run, an exploration question narrowed before it is approved, a Paper 1 unseen-analysis drill. There is no ongoing commitment. This suits a pupil who is generally fine and stuck on one specific thing that class time cannot reach.

  • Typically three to six sessions, then it ends
  • Scoped to a single paper or criterion
  • Useful immediately after a mock, while the paper is fresh
  • Feedback only on the pupil's own drafts and answers

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Dubai

The tutors below are grouped by what they actually teach. A Group 4 scientist is not interchangeable with a Group 3 essay marker, and neither is much use on a Maths AA exploration. Pick the subject and the level your child sits, and the shortlist narrows to people who have marked that paper's style of answer before.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What parents mean when they search for IB tutors in Dubai

  • Start from a marked paper, not a report grade
  • Map every internal assessment deadline before booking any slot
  • Decide whether the fault is subject knowledge or answer structure
  • Book the subject with the nearest unmovable deadline first

The plural is doing real work in this query. A parent typing it has usually concluded that the problem is not one subject, and that a single tutor across six Diploma subjects is a compromise rather than a solution. The useful answer is therefore not a list of names but a method for deciding which specialists you need, in which order, and what each is being asked to fix.

That decision starts with the most recent marked work in the house. Not the report grade, which is a summary, but the actual paper with the examiner's or teacher's annotations on it. A Chemistry paper where the lost marks cluster in Paper 1 points at reading stems and conditions. The same grade with losses spread evenly across Paper 2 extended responses points at writing structure. Those are different tutors, and in the second case possibly a different subject's tutor, because the writing problem may be general.

Second, the internal assessment calendar. Each Diploma subject runs its own coursework component with school deadlines set a year or more before the exams. A pupil in DP1 with a weak Group 4 investigation question is losing marks that cannot be recovered in DP2 revision, because the component is already written and uploaded. Sequencing specialists against those deadlines is worth more than adding hours.

Third, honesty about delivery. Every session described on this page runs one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to any address in the UAE, and that is a deliberate model rather than a limitation: the specialist pool for Physics HL or Economics HL is national, and the pool within a 20-minute drive of one Dubai community is not.

02

Groups 1 and 2: what the language assessments actually mark

Group 1 is studies in language and literature, and Group 2 is language acquisition. Dubai cohorts are heavily multilingual, which produces a specific confusion: a pupil fluent in conversational English can sit in English A and still score 4, because Group 1 does not mark fluency. It marks analysis of how meaning is constructed, and it marks it against assessment criteria that reward a controlled argument over a well-written description.

On Paper 1, candidates receive unseen texts and a guiding question. The commonest error in this emirate's cohorts is a competent summary of what the text says, with technique spotting bolted on. An examiner reading that cannot award the upper bands for analysis, because nothing in the answer explains the effect of a choice on a reader. The fix is mechanical and teachable: every paragraph names a choice, names its effect, and ties the effect to the guiding question.

Paper 2 is comparative, and that single word is where the marks sit. A script that analyses text A for three paragraphs and text B for three paragraphs is not a comparative essay, however good each half is. Each paragraph needs a point of comparison as its spine. This is the most reliable single improvement available in Group 1, and it does not require reading anything new.

Group 2 courses are assessed on individual oral and written production, and the marking rewards range used accurately over range attempted. A candidate who deploys three complex structures correctly outscores one who attempts eight and controls four. Tutoring here is largely about curating a usable, reliable repertoire and rehearsing the oral format until the format stops consuming attention.

GROUP 1 AND GROUP 2 COMPONENTS AND WHERE MARKS GO
ComponentWhat it marksLevelWhere Dubai candidates lose marks
Paper 1 guided textual analysisAnalysis of unseen non-literary text against a guiding questionSL and HLSummarising content instead of explaining the effect of choices
Paper 2 comparative essayComparison of two studied works in response to a questionSL and HLTwo separate essays stapled together with no comparative spine
HL essaySustained 1,200-1,500 word exploration of one studied textHL onlyA topic too broad to argue in the word count
Individual oralPrepared analysis linking a global issue to two textsSL and HLA global issue stated but never used as an analytical lens
Group 2 written assignment and oralAccurate use of range, register and intercultural understandingSL and HLAttempting unfamiliar structures and controlling none of them
03

Group 3: the command term is the question

  • Learn the command-term hierarchy before revising any content
  • Economics: label, draw, then reference the diagram in the prose
  • Psychology: four facts per study beats one paragraph per theory
  • Geography and History: place, date, figure, consequence

Economics, Business Management, Psychology, Geography, History and Global Politics sit in Group 3, and they share a failure mode. Candidates revise content and then answer the wrong kind of question with it. An outline question and a to what extent question on the same topic have different mark ceilings and different structures, and a candidate who writes the same answer to both has written one correct answer and one that cannot score.

In Economics the diagram is a marked component of the answer, not an illustration. Axes labelled with the variable and the unit, curves labelled, the shift drawn and then referenced explicitly in the prose. Candidates who draw a correct diagram and never mention it lose the marks that the diagram was supposed to earn. The internal assessment portfolio of three commentaries has a separate trap: each must cover a different section of the syllabus, and articles must fall inside a set age window, so candidates who collect them late have fewer legal options.

In Psychology the unit of currency is the study. A usable study has a name, a method, a finding and a limitation, and a candidate who holds four of those per topic can answer short-answer questions cleanly and build essays from the same material. Candidates who revise theories without studies find themselves asserting rather than evidencing, which caps the mark whatever the quality of the prose.

In Geography and History the equivalent currency is the specific case. A named place, a date, a quantity and a consequence beats three paragraphs of general tendency. Dubai candidates often have unusually good access to regional case material and do not use it, because the textbook examples feel safer. A locally grounded case, accurately dated and sourced, reads as command of the subject rather than recall of a list.

04

Group 4: the papers, the investigation and the 24 marks

The sciences share a structure: a multiple-choice Paper 1, a data and extended-response Paper 2, and an internal investigation. The investigation is the single most mishandled component in the Diploma, because it is worth a substantial share of the final grade, it is marked against published criteria, and it is written in DP1 when the exams feel distant and the deadline feels soft.

Paper 1 is not a knowledge quiz. Stems are constructed so that a candidate who reads quickly selects the answer to the question they expected. The conditions matter, the units matter, and the distractors are built from the specific misconception the examiners know is common. Candidates improve on Paper 1 by practising annotation of the stem rather than by rereading the textbook.

Paper 2 opens with a data-based question, and this is where candidates who are strong on content underperform. The question asks for a conclusion supported by the data provided, and the available marks go to answers that quote values from the figure and state the limitation of the comparison. Then the extended responses, where chemistry candidates forget state symbols, physics candidates give a number without a causal explanation, and biology candidates answer a discuss question with an outline.

The individual investigation is roughly ten hours of work marked against five criteria. A question narrow enough to generate a controllable variable and enough data points is the whole game; a beautiful write-up of an unanswerable question caps out low. The tutor's role here is tightly bounded. A tutor may teach the criteria, question the design, and comment on a draft the pupil wrote. The pupil writes every word of their own investigation, and we say that plainly because the alternative is an academic-honesty matter that ends a Diploma.

05

Group 5: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation

The maths route choice is made in Year 11 and regretted in DP2 more often than any other Diploma decision made in Dubai. The two courses are not harder and easier versions of one syllabus. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented, with a calculator-free Paper 1. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics, technology-permitted throughout, and it rewards interpretation of output in context.

A pupil who picked Applications to escape algebra discovers that regression, chi-squared and modelling all require the final sentence to interpret a number in the situation given, and that a bare numerical answer scores poorly. A pupil who picked Analysis on reputation discovers Paper 1 without a calculator, which exposes any reliance on a graphical display calculator for routine manipulation. Both are fixable, and both are fixed faster by a tutor who teaches that specific course rather than maths in general.

The route also carries admissions consequences, and this is where Dubai families most need a straight answer. Some engineering and mathematics degrees state Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, as a prerequisite. Others accept either route. The only reliable method is to read the current entry requirements for the named programmes on each university's own admissions page, because these change by intake and no tutoring page should be the source of record for them.

At HL, Analysis and Approaches adds Paper 3: a long, scaffolded investigation where candidates are led through a problem towards a generalisation. It rewards practice at setting up a general case and at writing mathematics that a reader can follow. It is the component most responsive to targeted coaching, because the skill it tests is almost never taught explicitly in class.

The Diploma core: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS

  • Up to 3 points come from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix
  • The Theory of Knowledge essay has a 1,600-word limit on a prescribed title
  • The Extended Essay is 4,000 words, marked to subject-specific criteria
  • Feedback is given on the candidate's own draft, never as supplied text

The core carries up to three points on the 45-point scale, awarded from a matrix combining the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay grades. Three points is the difference between a conditional offer met and missed, and it is earned on two pieces of writing that most candidates start too late and treat as administration.

Theory of Knowledge is assessed by an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and an essay of up to 1,600 words on a prescribed title released by the IB. Candidates lose marks by describing their objects or paraphrasing the title rather than making a knowledge claim and then testing it against a counterclaim. The subject is unusual in that improvement comes almost entirely from better questions asked of the candidate, which is exactly what a session can supply.

The Extended Essay is an independent 4,000-word research piece in a chosen subject, supervised in school. The strongest predictor of a good grade is the research question, and the second strongest is whether the candidate understands the subject-specific criteria for the subject they chose. An Extended Essay in History is marked differently from one in Chemistry, and candidates frequently write a general research paper and are marked against a specification they never read.

The boundary here is absolute, and we would rather state it than leave it ambiguous. A tutor may teach the assessment criteria, interrogate a research question, ask the questions that expose a weak argument, and give feedback on a draft the candidate has written. A tutor may not supply text, rewrite passages, or produce any part of the submission. The candidate's name goes on the work because the candidate wrote it, and anything else is malpractice under IB rules with consequences that fall on the pupil.

What IB subject tutoring costs in the Dubai market

Nobody competing for this search publishes a rate table in dirhams, which is strange given that it is the first thing a parent wants. The figures below are market rates collected from published provider pages and from a 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey, attributed to their source. They are not an IB Gram price list, and the only accurate way to learn what a specific match costs is the consultation after the free trial lesson.

The spread is wide for a reason. At the lower end sit university students and generalist online platforms, where a Diploma candidate frequently gets someone one year ahead of them in the same syllabus. In the middle sit qualified subject teachers working online. At the top sit specialists with current Diploma teaching experience in the exact subject and level, and named premium providers charging well above that again.

For a multi-subject plan the arithmetic matters more than the hourly rate. Two HL subjects at one hour a week each, sustained through DP2, is a materially different commitment from a six-session Paper 3 clinic, and families regularly choose the wrong shape. Spending the same budget on a shorter, sharper intervention against a specific component usually produces more marks than thinning it across six subjects.

Costs also sit in a context worth knowing. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an emirate incentives package. For families budgeting a two-year Diploma plan, a flat fee year is the moment to decide what tutoring is actually for rather than to add hours by default.

Subject coverage, and what happens when a specialist is not free

Availability transparency is the gap nobody in this market fills, so here is the position in plain terms. Common Diploma subjects at both levels are covered with reasonable depth and a short match time. Minority Higher Level subjects are thinner, and some combinations will take longer or will not be available in a given term.

The subjects that are consistently scarce in Dubai are the ones a small DP cohort cannot timetable in the first place: Computer Science HL, Global Politics, Design Technology, Sports Exercise and Health Science, Music and Film. A family whose school dropped one of those options is looking for a tutor in exactly the subject the local market has no reason to supply. This is where a national online pool stops being a compromise and becomes the only workable answer.

The Career-related Programme sits in the same category. Few Dubai schools license it, so CP candidates needing support with their reflective project or career-related study are searching a market of a handful of people. Honest coverage information in advance saves a family two weeks of hopeful enquiries.

When no specialist in the exact subject and level is free, the options are a wait with a date on it, a related-subject specialist for the transferable skill, or a straight statement that we cannot help this term. We would rather lose a booking than place a generalist in a Higher Level subject and let a family discover the mismatch in week three.

A realistic first month with two specialists

  • Week 1: diagnosis from marked papers, no teaching
  • Week 2: one narrow, drillable fix per subject
  • Week 3: internal assessment question interrogated and planned
  • Week 4: written summary, including what has not improved

Families ask what the first month actually contains, and a vague answer is a warning sign. For a DP1 pupil taking Chemistry HL and Maths Analysis and Approaches HL, both sitting at 4 and targeting 6, a defensible month looks like this. Week one is two diagnostic sessions, each built around the most recent marked paper in that subject, with no teaching at all until the pattern of lost marks is identified and written down.

Week two moves to the single highest-value fix in each subject. In Chemistry that is usually Paper 1 stem annotation plus state symbols and equation conventions in extended response. In maths it is usually calculator-free fluency if the route is Analysis and Approaches. Both are narrow, both are drillable, and both show up in the next piece of marked work rather than in a feeling of improvement.

Week three turns to internal assessment, because the deadline is the only fixed point in the year that cannot be renegotiated. The Chemistry investigation question is interrogated until it is narrow enough to control, and the maths exploration topic is tested against the five criteria. The pupil leaves with a question and a plan they wrote, having been asked hard questions about both.

Week four is consolidation and a written summary a parent can read: what was wrong, what changed, what the next marked piece should show, and what has not improved. If nothing measurable has shifted after four weeks on two subjects, the match is wrong and should be changed rather than extended. That is a more useful commitment than any promise about grades, which no tutor can honestly make.

Schools, the regulator and why DP cohort size matters to you

Dubai private education is overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. The published 2024-25 picture is 387,441 pupils across 227 private schools offering 17 different curricula, with UK curriculum schools taking 37% of enrolment, Indian 26%, US 14% and the International Baccalaureate around 7%.

That last figure is the one that explains the tutoring market. The Diploma is a minority programme in a very large market, which means a given school may run one DP cohort and staff each Higher Level subject with a single teacher. There is nothing wrong with that arrangement, and it produces excellent results in many Dubai schools. It does mean that when a pupil needs help outside class, the subject-specific local supply is structurally thin.

The emirate is also growing. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. New Diploma cohorts begin small, and small cohorts restrict option blocks, so the subjects a family cannot get taught locally will keep shifting over the next few intakes.

An inspection rating tells you something real but limited. The authority inspects private schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak, and the band is a judgement about the school as a whole. It does not tell you whether that school can timetable Economics at Higher Level this year, which is the question a Diploma parent is actually asking. Read the inspection report for the subject detail, not the headline band.

Areas we cover across Dubai

Where a family lives in Dubai shapes which IB school the pupil attends, which subjects that school can staff, and what time a session can realistically start. The notes below are about subject supply, not about scenery.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Feeds long-established Diploma cohorts with full HL science provision, so the gap here is rarely content. It is usually Paper 3 technique and exploration design, where class sizes leave no room for one-to-one drafting feedback.

Al Barsha and Tecom

Dense IB provision with several continuum schools running PYP through DP. Families frequently need MYP-to-DP bridging in sciences, because criterion marking stops abruptly and content recall starts.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer schools, newer DP cohorts, and therefore the thinnest HL option lists in the emirate. Requests here skew to subjects the school could not timetable: Economics HL, Computer Science, Psychology.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

A mix of British schools running A Level and IB schools running DP, so siblings in one household can be on different systems. Parents here often want one tutor who can hold both specifications without confusing them.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Strong Indian and British curriculum presence with a smaller DP population, which makes locally available Diploma specialists scarce. Session timing works best after 5pm once school transport has cleared.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Apartment living, long parental hours and pupils who travel out to school. Evening slots fill first, and a 45-minute focused session on a single paper technique suits this cluster better than a two-hour block.

Arabian Ranches and Mudon

Villa communities with established DP provision and heavy co-curricular loads. CAS commitments and sports fixtures mean a fixed weekly slot is often less workable than a fortnightly double before assessment deadlines.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several universities, so DP2 families here are already thinking about admissions. Requests combine subject work with route questions such as whether Maths Applications satisfies an engineering prerequisite.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Established Diploma schools

These are long-running Dubai Diploma centres with full Group 4 and Group 5 provision at Higher Level. Pupils from these cohorts usually arrive asking for technique work on a specific paper rather than content teaching.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • Deira International School
  • Dubai American Academy
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy

IB continuum and newer DP cohorts

Schools running the programmes end to end, or recently licensed for the Diploma. Smaller DP cohorts mean fewer HL options can be timetabled, and this cluster generates most of the requests for subjects a school cannot staff.

  • Uptown International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Hartland International School
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Bloom World Academy
  • Sunmarke School

Dual-pathway and transfer-heavy schools

Schools offering the Diploma alongside A Level or IGCSE, where pupils switch tracks at 16 and arrive in DP1 from a different assessment culture. Bridging work in maths and the sciences is the standard request from this cluster.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Universal American School Dubai

Schools are named to describe the Diploma provision Dubai families actually choose between; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subjects and the levels

Not the year group and not the school, the actual subject and level combination your child sits, plus the target grade and the nearest internal assessment deadline. That is enough to tell you honestly whether a specialist in each subject is available and how long a match will take.

  2. 02

Send one piece of marked work per subject

A marked paper with the annotations on it is worth more than any description of the problem. It shows whether marks are being lost on content, on command terms, on conventions or on timing, and those four faults need four different interventions.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One full session with the proposed specialist, at no cost and with no card required. It is run as a diagnosis rather than a sales demonstration: by the end you should have a written statement of what is wrong and what the first four weeks would target.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and the plan

Weekly, fortnightly or a short component block, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time around school transport and co-curricular commitments. If two subjects are running at once, drafting weeks are staggered so the pupil never faces two deadlines in the same fortnight.

  5. 05

Review against marked work, not feelings

Every four weeks, measured against the next piece of marked work from school. The review names what improved, what did not, and whether the match should continue. A match that has produced nothing measurable in a month should be changed.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on subject and level, not proximity

The constraint on Diploma tutoring in Dubai has never been distance. It is whether anyone reachable has recent experience of that exact subject at that exact level. Matching from a national online pool removes the geography from the decision and leaves only the subject question.

Diagnosis before teaching

The first session works from the pupil's most recent marked paper. Lost marks cluster, and the cluster names the fault: content gaps, command terms, conventions or timing. Teaching before that is guessing, and guessing is what makes families feel tutoring is not working.

Internal assessment handled inside the rules

A tutor teaches the criteria, questions the research question, and gives feedback on a draft the pupil wrote. No text is supplied and no part of a submission is produced for a candidate. Stating that boundary clearly is a differentiator in this market, and it protects the pupil.

Rates quoted with their source

Every dirham figure on this page is attributed to the provider or survey that published it, with the market tier it belongs to. You can therefore judge whether a quote you receive elsewhere is normal, without taking our word for anything.

Coverage stated honestly, including the gaps

Minority Higher Level subjects are genuinely scarce in this market. We publish which ones, what a realistic match time looks like, and what the fallback is. A dated waiting position is more useful to a family than an optimistic yes.

Review points with an exit built in

Progress is reviewed against marked school work every four weeks, and the review explicitly names what has not improved. A match that is not working gets changed. No grade outcome is promised, because no honest tutor can promise one.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Which IB subject groups do Dubai families book tutors for most often?+

Group 4 sciences and Group 5 mathematics account for most requests, with Chemistry HL and Maths Analysis and Approaches HL the two most asked for by a clear margin. Group 3 follows, led by Economics HL, usually because of diagram marks and the three-commentary portfolio rather than content. Group 1 requests are fewer but grow sharply after the first Paper 2 mock, when candidates discover that writing well is not the same as comparing two works. Group 2 and Group 6 requests are occasional and often concern the oral components, where format rehearsal matters more than subject knowledge.

How many IB tutors does a Diploma candidate in Dubai usually need?+

One or two, almost never six. A single specialist is right when the problem is confined to one subject and the pupil is otherwise coping. Two makes sense when both Higher Level subjects a pupil depends on for an offer are sitting a grade below target. Beyond two, the pupil's week becomes the bottleneck: three weekly sessions plus homework plus CAS plus internal assessment drafting leaves no time to consolidate anything. Families who feel they need four are usually looking at a study-skills or timetabling problem wearing a subject-knowledge costume, and that is worth diagnosing before booking anyone.

What is actually assessed in Physics Paper 3 at Higher Level?+

Paper 3 is the data analysis and options paper. The first section works from unfamiliar experimental data and tests whether a candidate can process it, identify uncertainty and draw a conclusion the data supports. The second section examines the option topic the school has taught. Candidates who revise only content tend to underperform on the data section, because it rewards technique that is rarely drilled in class: reading a graph for gradient and intercept meaning, handling uncertainties sensibly, and stating limitations. It is one of the most coachable components in the Diploma for exactly that reason.

Does a tutor need to know my child's exact subject combination?+

For teaching the subject, no. For planning, yes. The combination determines where the pressure points fall: a candidate with three Higher Level essay subjects faces a very different DP2 than one with two sciences and maths. Combination also drives the internal assessment calendar, because six subjects each generate coursework with its own school deadline, and those deadlines cluster. A tutor who knows the full combination can tell you which subject to work on first and which deadline is about to collide with the Extended Essay. A tutor who does not will optimise their own subject in isolation.

How do two IB subjects work in one weekly session?+

They do not work well, and we would rather say so. Two subjects in one hour means two specialists cannot both be present, so one subject is taught by someone outside their field. The workable version is two shorter slots with two specialists in the same week, with a single shared plan so drafting weeks do not collide. Where budget allows only one slot, the better choice is to pick the subject with the nearest unmovable deadline, fix that, and rotate. Splitting one hour across two Higher Level subjects usually produces no measurable movement in either.

What is the Group 4 individual investigation marked out of?+

The individual investigation is marked out of 24 across five criteria, and it represents roughly a fifth of the subject grade, with around ten hours of class and independent time allocated to it. The criteria reward a focused research question, a controlled method, careful data processing, genuine evaluation and clear communication. The question decides the ceiling: one that cannot produce enough controllable data caps the mark however well the report is written. That is why a session spent interrogating a research question before it is approved is usually worth more than three spent polishing a draft.

Can a tutor help if my child chose the wrong IB maths route?+

Yes, and this is a common Dubai request around the end of DP1. The first task is to establish whether the route is genuinely wrong or simply harder than expected. If a candidate in Analysis and Approaches is failing Paper 1 because of calculator dependence, that is a fixable technique problem, not a wrong course. If the candidate needs Analysis and Approaches for a stated degree prerequisite and is in Applications, that is a timetable conversation with the school, and it is urgent. Check current requirements on each university's own admissions page before making any switch.

How are IB command terms different from the IGCSE ones?+

IB command terms are defined per subject guide and carry a stricter hierarchy than most candidates arriving from IGCSE expect. State, outline, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate and discuss each imply a depth and a structure, and the mark scheme is written around it. An IGCSE candidate used to being rewarded for writing more finds that a discuss answer to an outline question earns the outline marks and wastes the time. Learning the hierarchy explicitly, subject by subject, is one of the fastest grade movements available in the first term of DP1.

What hourly range should a Dubai family expect for IB subject tutors?+

Published market rates in Dubai run from roughly AED 45 an hour at the budget online end to AED 650 an hour for named premium providers. Qualified subject teachers working online are mostly quoted between AED 150 and AED 300, and IB, IGCSE or A Level specialists between AED 200 and AED 450 or above. In-home visits carry travel and are quoted from AED 180 to AED 500. Those figures come from published provider pages and a 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey, not from us. What a specific match costs is settled at the consultation after the free trial.

Do tutors cover the November IB session as well as May?+

Dubai private schools following the northern academic year sit the May session, so that is where demand concentrates and where specialist availability is tightest between February and April. Candidates retaking or sitting in a November session can be supported, and the planning is different because the gap between results and the next entry deadline is short. Session windows, upload deadlines and results dates are set by the IB and are revised, so confirm every date with your school's Diploma coordinator or the IB itself rather than relying on any tutoring website, including this one.

What happens if no UAE-based tutor covers my child's subject?+

You get told, with a date. Minority Higher Level subjects such as Computer Science HL, Global Politics, Design Technology and Music are thin in this market, largely because small Diploma cohorts in Dubai cannot timetable them either. Because delivery is online across a national specialist pool rather than a local one, the search is not limited to people who live within driving distance of your community. Where nobody is free, the options are a dated waiting position, a related-subject specialist for transferable technique, or a straight no for the term. We prefer the straight no to a mismatch.

When should a DP1 pupil in Dubai start weekly sessions before mocks?+

Ten to twelve weeks before the mock window gives enough time for a diagnosis, one narrow technique fix per subject, and two pieces of marked school work to test whether anything moved. Starting four weeks out limits the work to exam-paper drill, which helps a little and cannot repair a content gap. Starting in DP1 at all is unusual and sensible, because the internal assessment components written that year are worth a fifth or more of several subject grades and cannot be revisited later. The mock is a diagnostic, not the deadline.

Are lessons for Dubai pupils delivered online or at a home address?+

Online, one-to-one, over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; in-home visiting is offered only in India. The practical effect for a Dubai family is a wider specialist pool rather than a narrower one, because the match is made on subject and level instead of driving distance. Sessions use a shared whiteboard and screen sharing, which also means every worked solution and annotated paper from the session survives as a reviewable record rather than vanishing with the tutor.

What may a tutor legally do with an internal assessment draft?+

A tutor may teach the published assessment criteria, question the research question until it is answerable, point out where an argument or a method does not hold, and give feedback on a draft the candidate has written themselves. A tutor may not supply text, rewrite sections, or produce any part of a submission. Under IB academic-honesty rules the consequences of crossing that line fall on the candidate and can end a Diploma, so the boundary is not negotiable for a fee. Any provider offering a finished internal assessment is selling the pupil a serious risk.

Does a KHDA inspection rating tell me whether a school teaches my child's HL subject well?+

Not directly. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority inspects Dubai private schools annually and publishes a judgement on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, but that band describes the school as a whole. It does not tell you whether this year's Diploma cohort is large enough to timetable Economics at Higher Level, or whether a single teacher covers both levels of Physics. The subject-level detail is inside the full inspection report rather than the headline band, and the school's option blocks answer the rest.

Start with one marked paper and one subject

If you are weighing up IB tutors in Dubai, the most useful next step costs nothing. Send the subject, the level, the target grade and one recent marked paper. We will tell you what the pattern of lost marks suggests, whether a specialist in that exact subject and level is free, and how long a match would take. The trial lesson that follows is a full diagnostic session with the proposed tutor, run over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no card required and nothing to cancel. If the diagnosis is that your child does not need a tutor this term, we will say that too.
