IGCSE Science Tutor in Umm Suqeim

An IGCSE science tutor in Umm Suqeim is working with whatever is left of the evening once the school gate has released at about 3:15pm and the beach road has been crossed. This page divides science revision into what belongs in a school laboratory and what belongs in that evening - which turns out to be most of the marks. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial.

  • Practical skills taught as written technique, which is how they are marked
  • Component weightings given per board before any teaching starts
  • Evening tasks matched to the energy left after the school run
  • Three sciences handled without booking three separate tutors

IB & IGCSE in Umm Suqeim

What is left of a school day, and which science marks live there

Science is the subject where the school holds something a tutor cannot replicate. Laboratories, equipment, a technician, a teacher watching twenty-eight students heat a liquid safely. That is real, and any page claiming otherwise is selling something. But it is also a much smaller part of the qualification than parents assume, and conflating practical science with the practical marks is how families in Umm Suqeim end up believing their child's science grade is out of reach in the evening.

Here is the division that matters. In Cambridge IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, the multiple-choice paper carries 30% of the grade, the theory paper carries 50%, and the practical component - either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper - carries 20%. Pearson's International GCSE sciences do it differently, assessing practical skills inside the written papers rather than in a separate component. In both systems, the marks awarded for practical work are awarded for written answers: identifying the independent variable, explaining why a result was repeated, labelling a table with units, reading a graph correctly, saying what the data does and does not support. None of that requires a bench.

Which is why the evening is where the science grade is actually decided. A student who gets home to Umm Suqeim at about 3:40pm after a 3:15pm release, eats, and has ninety usable minutes can do the single most valuable science task there is: take a marked past-paper question and work out why the mark scheme awarded three marks where they wrote four lines and got one. That is not laboratory work. It is writing, and it is teachable over live video.

This page is organised around that evening. It sets out which science route your child is on and what it costs them, the component structure for each board so you can see where the marks sit, what the alternative-to-practical paper rewards and why it is the most neglected fifth of the qualification, the specific topics where students in this part of Dubai lose marks, and a realistic plan for fitting science work into the hours between a school-run arrival and bedtime. It also explains why three sciences rarely means three tutors.

On delivery: IB Gram teaches Umm Suqeim students one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. For science specifically that matters less than for any other subject, because the work is written, the student's own paper is the material, and a shared screen is a better way to annotate an answer than a kitchen table. It also widens the pool, which in science matters at the edges: separate sciences at the top grades, and the handful of students in this area sitting a less common board, are the requests that a locally-bounded search fails to fill at all. Dropping the drive keeps those requests answerable, and keeps the whole of the evening window available to the lesson rather than to a journey.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science is also where option choices bite earliest. The route a child takes at 14 affects what is available at 16 and 18, so the programme sequence is worth reading as a chain rather than as separate stages.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 science, Years 7-9

Integrated science covering biology, chemistry and physics topics with internal assessment only. Nothing appears on a certificate, which is why gaps here are tolerated and why Year 9 particle theory, Year 8 energy and Year 9 cell biology reappear as apparent mysteries in Year 11.

The cheapest useful science tuition a family in Umm Suqeim can buy is a term of Year 9 chemistry, and virtually nobody buys it. The same gap addressed in Year 11 costs several times the hours because it has to be repaired alongside new content and against a deadline.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE science, Years 10-11

Either three separate sciences, or Co-ordinated Sciences as a double award, or Combined Science as a single award. Cambridge tiers these into Core and Extended with different grade ceilings; Pearson grades on the 9-1 scale. Each route has a different weekly load and a different post-16 consequence.

Schools around Umm Suqeim offer different combinations of these routes, and the option form in Year 9 is where the decision is made - often on timetable arithmetic rather than on where the child is heading. This is the single most consequential conversation a Dubai science parent can have, and it happens before anybody is thinking about it.

A LevelAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

International A Level sciences, Years 12-13

Entry requirements are set by the school and almost always expressed as a grade in the corresponding IGCSE subject. Separate sciences are the conventional route in; a double award is accepted by some schools and not by others, which is why the Year 9 option choice matters more than its presentation suggests.

Several schools serving Umm Suqeim run A Level sciences, and medicine, engineering and dentistry applications from this part of Dubai typically need Chemistry plus one other science. Check the specific school's entry rule for a double-award student before accepting Co-ordinated Sciences as a neutral choice.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma sciences, Years 12-13

DP sciences carry an Internal Assessment worth 20% alongside Paper 1 at 36% and Paper 2 at 44% in the current guides. The written-practical demand is heavier than at IGCSE and the Internal Assessment rewards exactly the skills the IGCSE practical component tests, which makes IGCSE practical technique a genuine investment rather than a hurdle.

International Baccalaureate schools account for 7% of Dubai private-school enrolment, with several close to Umm Suqeim along the coast and in Al Sufouh. A student moving from IGCSE into DP sciences will find the Internal Assessment familiar in shape if their alternative-to-practical technique was taught properly.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the science specifications an Umm Suqeim family is likely to be dealing with. Confirm the code with the school before buying anything, because the paper structures differ in ways the revision guides on sale locally do not make obvious.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 Core and Extended; Pearson 4BI1

The highest content volume of the three. Marks are lost to command words rather than knowledge: 'describe' wants the sequence, 'explain' wants the mechanism, 'suggest' wants an inference from unfamiliar data. Transport in plants, enzymes and genetics are the reliable trouble spots.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 Core and Extended; Pearson 4CH1

The most procedural science and therefore the most improvable in a short block. Moles calculations, electrolysis products and half-equations, rates graphs and organic reaction conditions account for most avoidable losses, and each responds to drilled practice with mark-scheme marking.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 Core and Extended; Pearson 4PH1

Fewest facts, hardest reasoning. Students lose marks by writing the conclusion without the chain of reasoning that earns it, and by mishandling units and prefixes under pressure. Electricity circuits, moments and thermal physics are the usual casualties.

Co-ordinated Sciences, double award

Cambridge 0654 Core and Extended

All three sciences with reduced content, awarded as two grades. Same three-component shape as the separate sciences with longer theory papers covering all three disciplines. Suits a loaded timetable; check post-16 entry rules before treating it as equivalent to separate sciences.

Combined Science, single award

Cambridge 0653

One grade covering all three sciences with the least content. Appropriate for a student whose strengths lie elsewhere and who needs a science qualification rather than a science route. It closes most A Level science doors, which should be stated plainly rather than discovered later.

Double Award Science

Pearson 4SD0

Pearson's double-award route, examined across several papers covering the three disciplines on the 9-1 scale. Practical skills are assessed within the written papers rather than in a separate practical component, which changes how revision should be organised.

Practical and investigative skills

Cambridge Paper 5 practical test or Paper 6 alternative to practical

Worth 20% of a Cambridge science grade. Assessed on variables, repeats, table construction with units, graph conventions, sources of error and conclusions supported by the data. All of it is written, which is why it can be taught without a laboratory.

Mathematical skills in science

All science specifications

Rearranging equations, standard form, significant figures, percentage change, gradients and areas under graphs. A disproportionate share of lost science marks is arithmetic rather than science, and it is usually fixed faster in a science session than in a maths one.

Scientific writing and command words

All science specifications

The single largest source of avoidable loss across all three sciences. Command words map to answer shapes, and mark schemes frequently require a specific named term rather than a correct paraphrase. Teachable in weeks and almost never taught deliberately.

Additional Mathematics alongside science

Cambridge 0606; Pearson 4PM1

Taken by students heading for A Level sciences or engineering. Worth mentioning on a science page because a physics student struggling with algebraic rearrangement is often better served by three sessions here than by more physics content.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Science tuition splits naturally into three jobs, and they belong in different parts of the week. All three are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly teaching session in one science

A midweek hour on content and reasoning in a single science, best placed on an evening with no fixture and ideally for a student home before 4:30pm. The tutor works from the specification code and from the student's own marked work, teaching the topic and then immediately testing it against exam-style questions.

  • One science, one tutor, same slot weekly
  • Specification code confirmed before the first lesson
  • Topic taught, then tested against real question wording
  • Short feedback naming the paper and the mark missed

Practical-skills block on the written components

Two to four sessions specifically on the alternative-to-practical paper or on the practical-skills questions inside Pearson's written papers. Worked entirely through past-paper responses: variables, repeats, tables, graphs, errors and conclusions. This is the highest return per hour available in IGCSE science and it needs no laboratory.

  • Targets the 20% component most students never revise
  • Entirely written work, marked against the official scheme
  • Covers table headings, units, graph conventions and error sources
  • Can be taken once and repeated nearer the series

Weekend session across two sciences

A longer weekend slot covering two sciences with the same tutor where the overlap allows - typically Chemistry and Physics for the mathematical content, or Biology and Chemistry for the organic and biochemical crossover. Better suited to extended work than a tired weekday evening after an Al Barsha commute.

  • Morning slots when concentration is actually available
  • Shared mathematical and practical technique across both sciences
  • Useful for students whose weekdays are taken by fixtures
  • Avoids the cost and fragmentation of two separate tutors

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Suqeim

01

Which science marks need a laboratory and which need an evening

An IGCSE science tutor in Umm Suqeim cannot give your child bench time, and should say so in the first conversation. What the school provides - equipment, supervision, the experience of actually doing an experiment badly and seeing why - is not replaceable. What the school frequently does not provide, because there is no time in a crowded scheme of work, is deliberate instruction in how practical work is written up for marks. That gap is where a tutor is most useful, and it is the opposite of what families expect.

The arithmetic makes the case. In Cambridge IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics the multiple-choice paper carries 30%, the theory paper carries 50% and the practical component carries 20%. The practical component is either Paper 5, a practical test, or Paper 6, the alternative-to-practical paper, and in both cases the marks are awarded for written responses. Pearson's International GCSE sciences take a different route, assessing practical skills within the written papers rather than separately, which means the same written technique matters and there is no separate practical paper to revise.

So of the whole qualification, the portion that genuinely requires a laboratory is the hands-on experience that informs the writing - and even students who have done every practical in the scheme routinely lose those marks, because nobody showed them that 'repeat the experiment' earns a mark only when paired with a stated reason. Everything else is reading, reasoning and writing: command words, chains of explanation, calculations, graph interpretation, and the discipline of answering the question asked.

The practical conclusion for a family in Umm Suqeim is reassuring and slightly deflating. Your child's science grade is decided largely in the evenings, by work that happens on paper. The school is doing the part a tutor cannot do. The part the school has least room for - deliberate, slow, mark-scheme-level attention to how an answer is written - is exactly what one hour a week over live video is good for.

02

Three sciences, double award or single: the choice behind the timetable

The science route is usually chosen on an option form in Year 9, and usually framed as a matter of interest and workload. It is also a decision about what will be available at 16 and 18, and that half of it is rarely explained at the time. The table below sets out the routes with their real consequences, so a parent in Umm Suqeim can have the conversation with the school before the form goes in rather than after.

The practical difference between the routes is content volume against doors kept open. Three separate sciences is the heaviest load and the most conventional route into A Level sciences and into medicine, engineering and dentistry applications. Co-ordinated Sciences as a double award reduces content substantially and produces two grades, which suits a student carrying ten subjects or one whose strengths are elsewhere; whether it is accepted for A Level science entry varies between schools, so ask the specific school. Combined Science as a single award is lighter still and closes most A Level science routes.

Tiering sits on top of this. Cambridge tiers these specifications into Core and Extended, with Core papers graded C to G and Extended papers graded A* to E, and the entry is made by the school to the board's deadline. A student on a Core entry cannot be awarded a top grade regardless of performance or tuition, which is worth knowing in Year 10 rather than in February of Year 11.

Where tuition changes this decision rather than following it: a student who is capable of three sciences but is currently weak in one is sometimes pushed towards a double award on evidence that a term of focused work would have changed. That is the one case where buying tuition in Year 9 or early Year 10 has a structural rather than a marginal return, because it keeps a route open rather than improving a grade inside a route already chosen.

Where the marks sit: component structure by board

You cannot plan science revision without knowing what each paper is worth, and most families never see the numbers. The table below gives them for the specifications common around Umm Suqeim. Read it once and the priorities reorder themselves immediately: a student spending most of their revision time on multiple-choice practice is optimising 30% of the grade while the theory paper at 50% and the practical component at 20% go untouched.

The theory paper deserves most of the attention, and not because it is the largest. It is the paper where the marks are awarded for extended written answers, which means it is the paper where technique compounds. A student who learns how a six-mark explanation is structured gains marks on every subsequent question of that type, in all three sciences, for the rest of the course. A student who memorises more content gains marks only on the questions that happen to ask about what they memorised.

The practical component is the most neglected 20% in the whole British-curriculum system. Students assume it is easy because the science content is familiar, then lose marks on independent and dependent variables, on why a result was repeated, on table headings that need units in the header rather than beside each value, on axis choices and best-fit lines, and on conclusions that overstate what the data shows. None of these are hard. All of them are specific, and almost none of them are revised.

For Pearson's International GCSE sciences the structure differs: practical skills are assessed inside the written papers, so there is no separate practical component to schedule. The written technique is the same, but the revision plan has to be built differently, which is another reason to confirm the specification code before any tutor starts teaching.

The alternative-to-practical paper, taught without a bench

  • Variables named precisely: independent, dependent, controlled
  • Repeats justified by purpose, not by the word 'accuracy'
  • Table headings carry the quantity and the unit; the body does not
  • Axes use most of the grid; a line of best fit, not a dot-to-dot
  • A named source of error, never 'human error'
  • A conclusion the data supports, with its limits stated

This is the section worth reading twice if your child sits a Cambridge science. The alternative-to-practical paper, or the practical test where a school enters students for it, is worth a fifth of the grade and consists almost entirely of transferable written skills. A tutor working over video can teach every one of them using past-paper questions and the official mark scheme.

What the paper rewards, concretely. Identifying the independent, dependent and controlled variables in an unfamiliar experiment. Explaining why a measurement was repeated and what is done with the repeats. Constructing a results table with the quantity and its unit in the column heading, consistent significant figures and no units repeated in the body. Choosing axes that use most of the grid, plotting accurately, and drawing a line of best fit rather than joining points. Identifying anomalous results and saying what to do about them. Naming a specific source of error rather than writing 'human error'. Stating a conclusion that the data actually supports, and saying where it does not.

Each of those is a rule with a mark attached, and each is checkable. A student who can be handed an unfamiliar method and reliably produce those elements will score well on this paper regardless of whether they happened to do that particular experiment in school. A student who did the experiment and writes 'we repeated it to be accurate' will lose the mark, because the scheme wants the reason - to identify anomalies, or to calculate a mean - and 'to be accurate' is not it.

The practical argument for doing this work in the evening with a tutor rather than in school is time. A scheme of work has to cover the content, and practical write-up technique gets taught in passing when a practical happens to be on. An hour spent deliberately on ten past-paper practical questions, marked against the scheme and corrected, typically returns more marks than an hour of content revision at any point in Year 11.

05

Topic by topic: where science marks actually disappear in Years 10 and 11

  • Chemistry: moles phrased backwards, unbalanced half-equations, conditions as lists
  • Physics: conclusions without the chain of reasoning; prefix conversion errors
  • Biology: sequenced explanations written as unordered paragraphs
  • All three: command words, which cost more marks than any single topic
  • All three: arithmetic and rearrangement, often better fixed in a science session than a maths one

The losses are consistent enough to predict. In Chemistry, moles calculations go wrong because students learn one formula triangle and meet a question phrased the other way round; electrolysis loses marks because half-equations are written without balancing charge; organic chemistry loses marks because reaction conditions are learned as a list rather than as a reason; and rates questions lose marks because gradients are described rather than calculated.

In Physics the pattern is reasoning rather than recall. A student knows that increasing resistance decreases current, writes the conclusion, and loses two of three marks because the chain - voltage constant, resistance up, therefore current down by the relationship - was never written down. Units and prefixes cost marks under pressure, particularly milli and kilo conversions inside a multi-step calculation. Moments, thermal physics and circuit analysis with two resistors are the usual casualties.

In Biology the volume of content hides a technique problem. Transport in plants, enzyme action, inheritance diagrams and homeostasis all require sequenced explanations, and the mark scheme awards each step. Students who know the biology write a paragraph that contains three of the five steps in no particular order and score three. Students who have been taught to write in steps score five with the same knowledge. Genetics questions additionally lose marks to careless Punnett squares and to answers that give a ratio without naming the phenotypes.

Across all three sciences the largest single avoidable loss is command words. 'State' wants a fact with no explanation. 'Describe' wants what happens. 'Explain' wants why. 'Suggest' wants a reasoned inference about something unfamiliar. 'Compare' wants both sides in each sentence. 'Calculate' wants working shown. A correct answer written in the wrong shape earns nothing, and this is diagnosable from any marked paper in about twenty minutes.

06

Fitting science into the evening after a 3:15pm gate

A plan that assumes five clear evenings will be abandoned by October. Build it around three. The gates nearest Umm Suqeim release secondary year groups between roughly 2:50pm and 3:30pm, the beach road and Al Wasl Road absorb all of it at once, and a child is home between about 3:30pm and 4:25pm depending on which section of Umm Suqeim and which gate. Food and changing take until about 4:30pm. Concentration is genuinely available from roughly 4:45pm to 6:30pm and declining after that.

Inside that window, different science tasks need different amounts of a student. Learning new content and working through a hard calculation need the front of the window. Past-paper practical questions need moderate energy and benefit from being done in short batches. Marking yesterday's answers against the mark scheme, flashcard recall and reading back a corrected explanation can be done at the tired end, and are the right things to put there.

Then subtract the fixtures. A sports commitment in Al Quoz or Al Barsha removes that evening entirely, not partially, because of the double journey. Arabic and Islamic Education homework are real and non-negotiable, since both subjects are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA's guidance stating those requirements must be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. A week with three usable science evenings is a normal week, not a failure.

The table below is a worked version for a Year 11 student taking three separate sciences. It assumes one tutored session, two independent evenings and a weekend morning, which is a realistic rather than aspirational load - and it puts the practical-skills work in the slot where it belongs, because those questions reward precision rather than energy.

What science tuition costs, and why three sciences is rarely three tutors

Start at the top of the market and work down, because the top is where the assumption that more money buys more marks is strongest. Premium named or examiner-led tutors in Dubai publish AED 500-650 and upwards, with BartyED at AED 650. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists sit at AED 200-450 and upwards, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's guidance putting specialists at AED 200-450 or more. A qualified subject tutor working online runs AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. In-home one-to-one with travel included runs AED 180-500, Bestimate quoting AED 180-350. At the budget end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52.

For science specifically, the band that matters is the middle one, and the reason is the practical component. A tutor at AED 150-300 who can mark an alternative-to-practical answer against the official scheme will recover more marks per hour than a tutor at AED 650 teaching content the student largely knows. The premium bands are worth paying for a short diagnostic or for a genuinely rare specification, not for the weekly hour where most of the work gets done.

Monthly, the market shows AED 240-600 at the budget end for a weekly hour, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, with advertised packages at AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Multiply any of those by three for three sciences and the number stops being sensible, which brings us to the practical point.

Three sciences rarely needs three tutors. Two of the three largest sources of lost marks - command words and practical write-up technique - are common across all three sciences, and the third, mathematical handling, is shared between Chemistry and Physics. One tutor working on those three things in a single science usually lifts the other two without touching them. Where separate specialists are genuinely justified is at the top end, where a student aiming at a 9 in all three needs content depth in each. For everyone else, one well-chosen tutor and a parent who understands the component weightings is a better purchase than three weekly sessions. All figures above are other providers' published rates read in October 2026, quoted as market context rather than as an IB Gram price list.

Starting from Umm Suqeim, and the honest limits of science tuition

  • Send the sciences, the codes, the tier and the last marked paper
  • Free full-length trial lesson worked on that paper
  • Weekly slot from 4:45pm Gulf Standard Time; weekend mornings for full papers
  • Laboratory experience stays with the school, and we say so
  • One tutor across two sciences where the overlap genuinely allows it

Send four things: which sciences, which specification codes, which tier if Cambridge, and the most recent marked science paper. We confirm the codes, match a tutor who teaches those specifications, and you take a full-length trial lesson at no cost worked through that paper. Sessions then run weekly in Gulf Standard Time, placed against your gate's release time, usually 4:45pm or 5:00pm. Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar timing and weekend mornings are available for extended work.

What tuition cannot do, stated plainly. It cannot provide laboratory experience; the school does that and should. It cannot make up for content never learned in Year 9 in the four weeks before a series - at that point the honest service is to protect the marks that are still reachable. It cannot change a tier entry, which belongs to the school and the board's deadline. And it cannot fix a situation where all three sciences are weak alongside three other subjects, because that is a load or wellbeing problem and more sessions make it worse.

What it does well is narrow and valuable: it teaches the written technique that carries the practical component, it fixes command-word discipline across all three sciences at once, it marks a student's own work against the official scheme until the student can predict the marks, and it tells you honestly which of the three sciences is actually costing the grade. Those four things are available in one hour a week and they are the reason most families see movement within a term rather than a year.

The fixed limits apply here as everywhere on this site. No home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. No claimed approval, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB, because IB Gram holds none. No reproduction or supply of specifications, past papers or mark schemes - we link the official sources and work from your school's own copies. No coursework written or completed. No grade promises, and no statistics about our own outcomes without the sample, date and method that would make them meaningful.

Where we tutor

Umm Suqeim and the gates its science students travel to

These notes describe release times and journeys, because for a science student the question is how much of the evening survives the commute - and that determines whether a session is for teaching or only for marking.

Umm Suqeim 1

Nearest the Al Wasl Road junctions, so the inland run is quick and the beach-road run is slow at release. Students here are usually home soonest in the area and can sit down to work by about 4:30pm.

Umm Suqeim 2

The middle strip with gates on both sides and the heaviest cross-traffic between 3:00pm and 3:30pm. A ten-minute drive takes twenty-five at release time, which is a quarter of the usable evening gone before anything starts.

Umm Suqeim 3

Towards Al Sufouh and the Burj Al Arab end. Longer run out to Sheikh Zayed Road, so students with activities inland are generally not free before 5:15pm and are better suited to a marking-focused session than a teaching one.

Al Safa

Inland across Al Wasl Road with fast access to Sheikh Zayed Road, sharing gates with Umm Suqeim. Science students here often have the most usable evening in the cluster, which makes them the best candidates for a full teaching session midweek.

Jumeirah 2 and 3

The strip towards town feeding many of the same schools. Identical release pattern and identical evening arithmetic, which is why a session time that works here works there and recommendations travel well between the two.

Al Sufouh

Large campuses towards Knowledge Park and Media City. Students commuting back to Umm Suqeim from these gates lose the most time on the return leg, and their realistic start is 5:00pm or later.

Al Barsha

Inland beyond Sheikh Zayed Road with a dense school cluster. The longest commute in this set, pushing a science session towards 5:15pm and making weekend mornings genuinely more productive than midweek evenings for practical-skills work.

Al Quoz

Where many sports academies and activity centres sit. Relevant because a Tuesday fixture here removes Tuesday from the week entirely, and planning science revision around three usable evenings works better than pretending there are five.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Suqeim

Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Jumeirah

The nearest gates, releasing secondary year groups between roughly 2:50pm and 3:30pm. Science option structures differ between these schools, so two children on the same street can be sitting completely different science routes. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; no affiliation is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the science codes and tier

Get the specification code for each science from the school in writing, and the tier if it is a Cambridge entry. Cambridge and Pearson structure their science assessment differently, and a family revising for a practical paper that their board does not set is a common and entirely avoidable waste.

  2. 02

    Send one marked science paper

A marked mock with the marks visible shows whether losses are content, command words, calculation or practical technique. Those four need different plans and the grade looks the same in each case, so this single document shortens the diagnosis by weeks.

  3. 03

Take the free trial on the practical questions

Ask the trial lesson to work through the practical-skills questions on your child's paper. It is the fastest way to see whether a tutor marks to the scheme or teaches to the topic, and it covers the component most likely to be untouched.

  4. 04

Place the session at the front of the window

Put the tutored hour on an evening with no fixture, starting 4:45pm or 5:00pm depending on which gate your child leaves. Teaching needs the good part of the evening; marking and review can go late, and should.

  5. 05

Recount the losses each half term

Every six to eight weeks, categorise the lost marks on a fresh paper again. If practical-component losses have dropped and command-word losses have not, the focus changes. If nothing has moved after a full block, change tutor or stop - and we will say which.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The practical component is taught, not written off

A fifth of a Cambridge science grade sits in written practical skills that most revision plans never touch. We treat it as a teachable block with specific rules rather than as something that needs a laboratory, because that is how it is actually marked.

Command words across all three sciences at once

The largest avoidable loss in IGCSE science is the same in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Fixing it in one subject lifts the other two, which is why one well-chosen tutor frequently outperforms three weekly sessions.

The specification is confirmed before teaching

Cambridge sets a separate practical component; Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Teaching the wrong structure is competent work aimed at the wrong target, and it is the commonest failure in this market.

Sessions placed where concentration exists

After a 3:15pm gate and the beach-road crossing, the usable window is roughly 4:45pm to 6:30pm. We put teaching at the front of it, marking at the tired end, and extended papers on a weekend morning, rather than booking a generic evening hour.

Rates quoted with their sources

Every AED figure on this page is another provider's published rate with the provider named and the reading date given. For science the useful conclusion is that the middle band buys the marks, and the premium bands rarely do.

Limits named before you pay

We cannot supply bench time, change a tier entry, or repair three years of missing content in four weeks. Saying so is how the rest of the page earns any trust at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Suqeim: your questions answered

Can my child really improve an IGCSE science grade without extra laboratory time?+

Yes, because the marks are written. In Cambridge IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics the multiple-choice paper carries 30%, the theory paper 50% and the practical component 20%, and the practical component awards marks for written responses about variables, repeats, tables, graphs, errors and conclusions. Pearson's International GCSE sciences assess practical skills inside the written papers instead. Bench experience informs that writing and belongs to the school, but the marks themselves are recovered on paper. Deliberate work on practical write-up technique is usually the highest return per hour available in IGCSE science.

Which science component do students in Dubai most often leave unrevised?+

The practical component, which in Cambridge sciences is worth 20% of the grade. Students assume it is easy because the underlying science is familiar, then lose marks on precise things: naming the independent and controlled variables, justifying repeats by purpose rather than by the word accuracy, putting the unit in a table heading instead of beside each value, using most of the grid when choosing axes, drawing a line of best fit rather than joining points, and naming a specific source of error rather than writing human error. Each has a mark attached and each is learnable in a session or two.

Should my child take three separate sciences or Co-ordinated Sciences?+

It depends on where they are heading, and the decision is usually made on timetable arithmetic in Year 9 rather than on that. Three separate sciences is the heaviest load and the conventional route into A Level sciences and into medicine, engineering and dentistry applications. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 reduces content and produces two grades, which suits a loaded timetable - but whether it is accepted for A Level science entry varies between schools, so ask the specific school before the option form goes in. Combined Science as a single award is lighter again and closes most A Level science routes.

Does one tutor cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or do we need three?+

One tutor covers two comfortably in most cases and three only at the top end. The reason is that the biggest sources of lost marks are shared: command-word discipline applies identically across all three sciences, practical write-up technique is the same paper skill in each, and mathematical rearrangement is shared between Chemistry and Physics. Fixing those in one science usually lifts the others without separate sessions. Where three specialists are genuinely justified is a student aiming at the top grade in all three and needing content depth in each. For everyone else, three weekly sessions is more cost than benefit.

When in the evening should a science session be scheduled in Umm Suqeim?+

Put the teaching session at 4:45pm or 5:00pm depending on which gate your child leaves. Secondary release around Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Al Sufouh runs roughly from 2:50pm to 3:30pm, the beach road and Al Wasl Road take all of it at once, and a child is home between about 3:30pm and 4:25pm. Food and changing take until roughly 4:30pm, and real concentration is available from about 4:45pm until 6:30pm. Save marking and review for the tired end of the evening and keep full timed papers for a weekend morning.

My child knows the science but writes poor answers. What is going wrong?+

Almost certainly command words. 'State' wants a fact with no explanation, 'describe' wants what happens, 'explain' wants why, 'suggest' wants a reasoned inference about unfamiliar material, 'compare' wants both sides in each sentence, and 'calculate' wants the working shown. A correct answer in the wrong shape earns nothing, and a student who writes a good paragraph containing three of five required steps in no order scores three. This is diagnosable from any marked paper in about twenty minutes and is fixable in a few weeks, which makes it the single best-value thing to work on.

How do we revise for a practical paper if the school has not done the experiment?+

You revise the rules rather than the experiment, because the paper is designed to present unfamiliar methods. A student who can reliably identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables in any described experiment, justify repeats, build a correctly headed table, plot and draw a best-fit line, spot anomalies, name a specific error source and state a conclusion the data supports will score well whether or not they have met that particular practical. Working through ten past-paper practical questions against the official mark scheme teaches those rules faster than doing three more experiments would.

Does the tier entry affect how we should plan science tuition?+

Substantially. Cambridge science specifications are tiered, with Core papers graded C to G and Extended papers graded A* to E, and the entry is made by the school to the board's deadline on the basis of internal performance. A student on a Core entry cannot be awarded a top grade whatever the tuition. So the useful conversation, in Year 10 rather than February of Year 11, is which tier your child is heading for in each science and what would change it. A child on the tier boundary has far more to gain from a term of work than one comfortably inside either tier.

Which science is usually the quickest to improve?+

Chemistry, because it is the most procedural. Moles calculations, electrolysis half-equations, rates gradients and organic reaction conditions are rule-governed, and a student who drills them with a tutor marking to the mark scheme tends to see movement within a half term. Physics takes longer because the losses are in reasoning that has to be written out rather than in facts. Biology takes longest because the content volume is highest, although the technique fix - writing sequenced explanations that match the mark scheme steps - often produces a quick partial gain before the content work is finished.

What should we spend on science tuition for one child in Year 11?+

The mid-market online band of AED 150-300 an hour is where science tuition belongs, because the skill that recovers the most marks is marking an answer against the official scheme rather than teaching content the student mostly knows. Published Dubai figures put specialists at AED 200-450 and upwards with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium named tutors at AED 500-650 with BartyED at AED 650. Monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 600-1,200 mid-market. The premium bands are worth a short diagnostic, not the weekly hour where most of the work happens.

How does the Arabic and Islamic Education requirement affect a science revision plan?+

It removes time that most plans assume is free. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's guidance states the requirements must be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Those subjects set homework, and it is not optional. A Year 11 student taking three sciences plus the mandatory subjects has fewer free evenings than a revision timetable suggests, so plan around three usable science evenings a week rather than five.

Can a science tutor help with the maths inside physics and chemistry?+

Yes, and it is often the better place to fix it. Rearranging equations, standard form, significant figures, percentage change, gradients and areas under graphs account for a disproportionate share of lost science marks, and a student who meets them inside a physics question learns them in the context they will be tested in. Three sessions on algebraic rearrangement inside a physics session frequently return more than the same time in a general maths session, because the student stops treating the formula as a triangle to memorise and starts treating it as a relationship to manipulate.

Is it too late to start science tuition eight weeks before the June series?+

Eight weeks is enough to change technique and to recover the highest-mark topics, and it is not enough to learn content never taught. What works in that window: practical-skills questions worked against the mark scheme, command-word discipline, the two or three heaviest topics in each science by mark allocation, and timed papers in the final three weeks. What does not work is a sweep through the whole specification. If the content was genuinely never learned, the honest plan is to protect the marks still reachable rather than to attempt everything, and we will say that rather than sell a rescue.

How will we know the science tuition is working before results come out?+

By recounting categories of lost marks on a fresh marked paper every six to eight weeks rather than by asking whether lessons feel useful. Separate the losses into content never learned, command word misread, practical technique, calculation error and ran out of time, and track whether the targeted category has shrunk. Grades move in steps and lag technique by a term, so a category count is the more honest early signal. If the targeted category has not moved after a full block, the sensible responses are a change of focus, a change of tutor, or stopping.

Do you provide past papers and mark schemes for IGCSE science?+

No, and no provider should. Specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright material, and reproducing or distributing them is infringement. We reference them, link the official Cambridge and Pearson sources, and work from the papers your school has issued to your child - which are the right ones anyway, because they match the exact specification and tier your child sits. A provider offering a library of downloadable board material is offering something they are not entitled to distribute.

The science grade is decided on paper, in the evening

If your child is sitting IGCSE science from a school near Umm Suqeim, the school is doing the part that needs a laboratory and the evening is where the rest of the grade is won. Send the specification codes, the tier and one marked paper, and ask the free trial lesson to work through the practical-skills questions on it. That single hour will tell you whether a tutor marks to the scheme or teaches to the topic, which is the whole difference. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, placed where concentration actually exists.
